- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Yukon football coaches show. Yukon takes on
- 0:03Speaker 1: Duke and they'll play at three thirty Eastern time at
- 0:08Speaker 1: the Rent, plenty of time to tailgate and get into
- 0:11Speaker 1: that statement. It's going to be almost like a night game, coach,
- 0:14Speaker 1: because you know how dark it gets here now with
- 0:17Speaker 1: the daylight savings thing going on. I mean the lights
- 0:20Speaker 1: are going to be on in the first quarter. I
- 0:21Speaker 1: think that's going to be a little different.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a I looked it up four to thirty five.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Right now, they're saying a sunset and I like it
- 0:31Speaker 3: when the lights are on. I like that night game feel.
- 0:34Speaker 3: I think it makes it more dramatic, more fun. So
- 0:38Speaker 3: you're not going to get any complaints out of me
- 0:40Speaker 3: about having a three thirty kickoff time.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I like that time for our football team.
- 0:45Speaker 1: We're going to talk about Duke here in just a moment,
- 0:47Speaker 1: but I want to get to your defensive guys, because
- 0:51Speaker 1: over the last few weeks we've been talking about turnovers takeaways.
- 0:55Speaker 1: For a while, Yukon didn't have many, but now things
- 0:58Speaker 1: are happening. You got three interceptions by Cam Chadwick in
- 1:02Speaker 1: that game and granted the UAB quarterbacks kind of under
- 1:07Speaker 1: pressure put the ball up there and Husky's able to
- 1:10Speaker 1: take advantage of it. But turnovers, takeaways by defenses, boy,
- 1:14Speaker 1: that that really puts a lot of juice in the stadium.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Well yeah, I mean, you know when you can, when
- 1:20Speaker 3: you can get a takeaway, as you know, it really
- 1:23Speaker 3: affects the football game. And the other thing that you know,
- 1:26Speaker 3: we focus a lot on is just negative plays. And
- 1:30Speaker 3: we've talked a lot, I think you and I about
- 1:31Speaker 3: the explosive plays that we've given up, but we've failed
- 1:34Speaker 3: to ignore the fact that you know, we're number two
- 1:37Speaker 3: in the country in sacks with thirty three. You know,
- 1:40Speaker 3: when you get a sack on a drive, their offensive
- 1:45Speaker 3: scoring percentage drops dramatically. We're tenth in the country and
- 1:48Speaker 3: tackles for loss. When you get a negative play on
- 1:53Speaker 3: a defensive series, that the percentage of their chance to
- 1:57Speaker 3: score goes way down. And so you know, those are
- 2:00Speaker 3: things that we have to continue to emphasize. And then
- 2:03Speaker 3: the takeaway it goes without saying. You know, you get
- 2:06Speaker 3: the ball back for your offense. You know, you steal
- 2:07Speaker 3: an opportunity for them to score against you, and you
- 2:10Speaker 3: give your offense a chance so.
- 2:13Speaker 2: We focus hard on it without talking about it a lot.
- 2:15Speaker 3: You know, we just go out and we just work
- 2:17Speaker 3: hard and we feel like if we're all in position
- 2:21Speaker 3: and doing our job, that we're going to have some
- 2:23Speaker 3: opportunities to get the ball.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Yeah, special teams. Jackson Harper ripped off an Iice thirty
- 2:29Speaker 1: seven yard hunt return. That's another thing that you know
- 2:32Speaker 1: in today's game, on all levels pro college, you don't
- 2:36Speaker 1: see as much of that as we used to. Why
- 2:39Speaker 1: do you think that is that we're not seeing? I know,
- 2:42Speaker 1: the kickoff thing in the NFL is way different now,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and yeah, I just don't see as much of that
- 2:47Speaker 1: because the kickers in college are kicking it through the
- 2:49Speaker 1: back of the end zone obviously, but you know the
- 2:52Speaker 1: kick game, once in a while you get something like
- 2:54Speaker 1: Harper with that run back and that really put Yukon
- 2:57Speaker 1: in great field position.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I think that you know you said it about the kickoffs,
- 3:02Speaker 3: is you got these kickers with these enormous legs that
- 3:05Speaker 3: are putting it through the back of the end zone.
- 3:07Speaker 3: You know, so there's just not as many return opportunities
- 3:10Speaker 3: and kickoffs, and then the punt game. The way that
- 3:14Speaker 3: the rules are set up in college football, where you
- 3:16Speaker 3: can have guys down the field before the ball is kicked,
- 3:19Speaker 3: is much different in the NFL. In the NFL, you
- 3:21Speaker 3: cannot get down the field unless you are in an
- 3:23Speaker 3: eligible position for the balls kick, So you get guys
- 3:28Speaker 3: down the field closer to the returners more often, and
- 3:31Speaker 3: then the rollout punts.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I think affected as well.
- 3:34Speaker 3: You know, there's less predictability and where the punt is
- 3:37Speaker 3: going to go. So when you get an opportunity like
- 3:40Speaker 3: we have the other day, where you know, the guy
- 3:42Speaker 3: maybe out kicks his coverage it a little bit, or
- 3:44Speaker 3: he doesn't, you know, get enough a hang time, you
- 3:46Speaker 3: have to be ready to capitalize. And our guys did
- 3:49Speaker 3: a really nice job of blocking it up and Jackson
- 3:52Speaker 3: did a nice job of getting what he could get.
- 3:54Speaker 3: But I just think there's it appears to me that
- 3:58Speaker 3: there's factors that have limited opportunities for teams all throughout
- 4:02Speaker 3: college football to get the big returns like we used
- 4:04Speaker 3: to see.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yeah, and that that's an exciting part of the game
- 4:07Speaker 1: for sure. You mentioned in the press conference tuesday about
- 4:10Speaker 1: the third down percentage you count twenty second in the
- 4:13Speaker 1: country against the opposition in this game coming up, Duke
- 4:17Speaker 1: We're going to talk about them because they are they
- 4:20Speaker 1: are kind of electric on the offensive side of things.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Is third down going to be really really key in
- 4:26Speaker 1: this game. We talk about it every week, but it
- 4:28Speaker 1: seems like it's going to be a huge down this week.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, we actually were twenty second. We dropped
- 4:33Speaker 3: a few spots because we didn't We weren't great on
- 4:36Speaker 3: third and fourth down against UAB. It's going to be
- 4:39Speaker 3: critical against a team like Duke, you know, who's so
- 4:42Speaker 3: explosive on offense is number one. You have to get
- 4:45Speaker 3: him in a third and you know, predictable situation where
- 4:48Speaker 3: you can predict with not one hundred percent certainly, but
- 4:51Speaker 3: hopefully with some certainty that they're going to throw the ball.
- 4:54Speaker 3: And then you got to you got to try to
- 4:56Speaker 3: pressure this quarterback, which is really difficult because he's just
- 4:58Speaker 3: an outstanding player. He's great in the pocket and he
- 5:01Speaker 3: has really great vision and accuracy and the rush doesn't
- 5:04Speaker 3: seem to affect him a lot.
- 5:05Speaker 2: We got to make plays down the field.
- 5:07Speaker 3: So getting off the field on third down and not
- 5:10Speaker 3: letting them sustain drives is important every single week that
- 5:12Speaker 3: you play, and this is the week we're playing, so
- 5:16Speaker 3: it's ultra important this week.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, this duke team. They're five and three, but they've
- 5:21Speaker 1: got three road wins, that to me is always impressive.
- 5:24Speaker 1: And they just beat Clemson in a wild game. They've
- 5:28Speaker 1: wanted cal They're just you know, five and three. To me,
- 5:32Speaker 1: they seem better than that. The record seems like it
- 5:35Speaker 1: should be better when you look at them first. First
- 5:38Speaker 1: things first, Darien mens Of their quarterback, came from Tulane,
- 5:42Speaker 1: where he was outstanding twenty two touchdowns, six interceptions. This
- 5:45Speaker 1: year he's even better twenty one touchdowns, two interceptions. I mean,
- 5:49Speaker 1: he's Joe Finnano. Like this guy. What's the thing about
- 5:53Speaker 1: him when you first look at him and you say,
- 5:55Speaker 1: oh boy, well what are we going to do with this?
- 5:58Speaker 3: Well, when they got him in the offseason and I
- 6:01Speaker 3: knew we played him, I was like, come on now,
- 6:04Speaker 3: you know because I walked with Tulane last year and
- 6:06Speaker 3: he was special. And I think he's got incredible vision.
- 6:11Speaker 3: I think he's got a great release. I think he's
- 6:14Speaker 3: a tremendous decision maker. I think he's got great pocket awareness.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I think he can make every throw on the field.
- 6:21Speaker 3: If he needs to run, he can. But he's really
- 6:23Speaker 3: great at extending plays and then getting the ball down
- 6:26Speaker 3: the field. He's got outstanding offensive line in front of him,
- 6:30Speaker 3: really good backs, tight ends, and certainly those wide receivers
- 6:33Speaker 3: are dynamic players.
- 6:35Speaker 2: We'll get the.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Wide receivers in just a moment. Quick time out Jim
- 6:38Speaker 1: Morrow with us. The Yukon Football Coaches Show continues on
- 6:41Speaker 1: the Lear Field at a moment
