- 0:01Speaker 1: My nipples have never been harder because I'm still thinking
- 0:06Speaker 1: about Avatar.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yeah, Last Airbender girl.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Okay, But before we get into it, let's do a
- 0:13Speaker 1: little because we really jumped into it last week.
- 0:15Speaker 2: So how about we how about we catch up? Blue blah?
- 0:17Speaker 2: How do we say? Hi? I don't know if I do.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I have anything to talk about that isn't Avatar, Aang,
- 0:22Speaker 2: the Last Airbender or Spiderman Brand New Day. I don't know.
- 0:25Speaker 2: How are you, fran I'm doing okay, I'm busy, I'm
- 0:29Speaker 2: st what are you busy with? Let's do a little plug.
- 0:32Speaker 2: So let's do a little plug for the virgins. Listen, virgins.
- 0:35Speaker 2: If you are in New York City on August twenty eighth,
- 0:37Speaker 2: twenty ninth, or thirtieth, you should hike up a day
- 0:41Speaker 2: trip to Fire Island to visit Doll Invasion, the fabulous
- 0:45Speaker 2: annual fundraiser for the nonprofit my sister organization, Queer Art.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Dall Invasion is a kind of like historic event that
- 0:56Speaker 2: galvanizes a record number of trans people to descend on
- 0:59Speaker 2: the island, and obviously a lot of gay guys too.
- 1:04Speaker 2: It's a very mixy party, the guys and dolls. They
- 1:06Speaker 2: love to party together. And also no Shade. The guys
- 1:10Speaker 2: know that it's kind of the best party on the island.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Like sorry, like hiking, no shade, like Baffo Festival is
- 1:16Speaker 2: nopening anymore, and like I love Pines Party, but that
- 1:19Speaker 2: is like not my demographic, like all love to the
- 1:20Speaker 2: girls that love it. I have not been. I was
- 1:23Speaker 2: going to go for the first time this year, but
- 1:24Speaker 2: I think next year will be my first Pines party. However,
- 1:28Speaker 2: doll Invasion Bibes, I don't even know if you know
- 1:31Speaker 2: this yet, Rose, we're programming fifty eight hours of music.
- 1:37Speaker 2: That's crazy, fifty eight hours. I'm only responsible for like
- 1:40Speaker 2: two of those, right, No, you're responsible for like six
- 1:43Speaker 2: or seven. Wells, Okay, they're different, different slots across the weekend,
- 1:47Speaker 2: so you'll be graz and so, just so that the
- 1:50Speaker 2: virgins understand the concept, if you're not familiar with Fire Island,
- 1:53Speaker 2: there's this thing called Tea, which is a sometimes daily
- 1:58Speaker 2: happy hour that the girls go to because there's basically
- 2:01Speaker 2: one bar on the island and one club on the
- 2:03Speaker 2: island in the Pines that is, which is where this
- 2:07Speaker 2: side of the resort town where the party takes place
- 2:11Speaker 2: and there is something called low T, Middle T, and
- 2:15Speaker 2: High T. Technically the pool party is separate from middle T,
- 2:18Speaker 2: but I think middle T is like all the same
- 2:20Speaker 2: as long as it's in the pool and doll Invasion
- 2:23Speaker 2: will be taking over all three t's simultaneously all weekend,
- 2:30Speaker 2: and so as with Low TI, you know, high T
- 2:34Speaker 2: is more like the unz DJ like club vibes. Middle
- 2:38Speaker 2: teas out. That's where you g out. Well, I mean
- 2:41Speaker 2: not me, I'm not ging out. The place where one
- 2:44Speaker 2: g's out. Well, the place that I've seen someone g out,
- 2:47Speaker 2: unfortunately is middle T, which is the daytime pool party vibes,
- 2:52Speaker 2: and then Low T is the primary cocktail hour. This
- 2:56Speaker 2: is where gay guys go to get twenty four dollars
- 2:58Speaker 2: vodka soda, vodka sodas. It's extremely crowded. And the idea
- 3:03Speaker 2: that like Teresa is gonna be playing fucking transgender dungeon
- 3:09Speaker 2: Corps at Low TI is gonna be It's gonna be cool,
- 3:13Speaker 2: Like I'm not gonna lie like it's this This weekend
- 3:16Speaker 2: will be a grand experiment, and there will be lots
- 3:19Speaker 2: of things from this year that like will inform next year. However,
- 3:23Speaker 2: one thing we have guaranteed is that it's going to
- 3:26Speaker 2: be fucking bomb because thousands of I mean over the weekend,
- 3:31Speaker 2: over a thousand people come through just for Doll Doll Invasion,
- 3:34Speaker 2: and every year our crowd doubles, so like this year
- 3:37Speaker 2: it could be two thousand. Who knows.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And if you are in New York City this weekend,
- 3:44Speaker 1: the weekend of August fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, seventh through ninth,
- 3:51Speaker 1: there is a Doll Invasion sort of pre key fundraiser
- 3:57Speaker 1: called dolls Wick and that I am DJing at. This
- 4:02Speaker 1: is my month of gigs and if you would like
- 4:05Speaker 1: to come, you know, support Doll Invasion, have a little
- 4:10Speaker 1: daytime dance party at a really cute Bushwick backyard, you
- 4:13Speaker 1: should come through. If anyone's interested, dms and we'll send
- 4:19Speaker 1: you the link to RSVP.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yes, and all of this you can find on at
- 4:24Speaker 2: doll Invasion on Instagram. The doll Swick party that roses
- 4:28Speaker 2: DJing is from one to seven pm, but there's also
- 4:31Speaker 2: an evening portion if you can't make it, at Ginger's
- 4:34Speaker 2: Bar called Dykes and Dolls from seven to seven pm
- 4:38Speaker 2: to one am. So I'm going to be raging literally
- 4:41Speaker 2: for twelve hours. How are you doing that magic, because
- 4:46Speaker 2: I'm not doing that.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I will be there for my set. Well, I can't
- 4:52Speaker 1: really speak outside of that.
- 4:53Speaker 2: You're going to stay till seven and then, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 2: don't put words in my maney I'm going to be
- 4:58Speaker 2: I'm going to be caravanning a bunch of us in
- 5:00Speaker 2: an Uber Excel over to Gingers and whoever wants to
- 5:03Speaker 2: come will come.
- 5:05Speaker 1: But as I said, this is my month of gigs.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I'm djaying three parties this month. I've already done one.
- 5:11Speaker 2: What's the oh? What was the So this weekend.
- 5:14Speaker 1: I was I did the closing set. I suppose I
- 5:18Speaker 1: was the headliner at Holmes's About to Bust Comedy Festival.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Holmes is a comedian who's on that show over Compensating
- 5:28Speaker 1: with Benito Skinner and Mary Beth Barone, okay, and she
- 5:32Speaker 1: started a sort of alternative comedy festival, like centered around
- 5:37Speaker 1: queers and fems. I was kind of just calling it
- 5:41Speaker 1: a lesbian comedy festival because that was very much what
- 5:43Speaker 1: it was giving. And I went on after Mary Beth
- 5:47Speaker 1: Barone's closing set this weekend at the Chocolate Factory in Bushwick,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and you know, I pulled out my lesbian bait remixes
- 5:59Speaker 1: like I did. I had a four non blonde moment
- 6:03Speaker 1: that the girls really went crazy for.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Okay, how much muna did you play? I didn't not
- 6:08Speaker 2: play any muna. Okay, I mean it's not it's not
- 6:11Speaker 2: really a giving club. Well, I guess like some of
- 6:13Speaker 2: the music is unzi unci, but you don't want to
- 6:15Speaker 2: be too on the nose, you know.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Well, you know, this was actually one of the few
- 6:19Speaker 1: instances where I was told in advance what kind of
- 6:23Speaker 1: music to play?
- 6:24Speaker 2: Oh love that I breathe. I don't. Okay, what were
- 6:28Speaker 2: you told?
- 6:28Speaker 1: Well, I was told, you know, to keep it more
- 6:31Speaker 1: like like remixes, but of stuff people could like sing
- 6:36Speaker 1: along to. They didn't really wants.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Club vibes, so sure, I mean okay, And it was
- 6:47Speaker 2: funny day time. It was funny because at daytime it
- 6:50Speaker 2: was I I think, I'm you've never actually heard like
- 6:54Speaker 2: a real like like I've only ever heard mid morning
- 6:58Speaker 2: DJ set, So I think you have categorized me as
- 7:00Speaker 2: a daytime DJ. But no, I have not categorized you.
- 7:03Speaker 2: I'm saying you are good at that. Okay, thank you.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I'm saying I've seen I do think I excel at
- 7:08Speaker 1: sort of a one am set.
- 7:10Speaker 2: I love to hear that. Maybe that'll inform where I
- 7:13Speaker 2: slap you for it all Invasion. Yeah, I don't want
- 7:16Speaker 2: to play during the day Diva. I don't want to.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I don't want to be the opening DJ when no
- 7:20Speaker 2: one's there. Well, well, we'll talk about it, but it's
- 7:23Speaker 2: it's only it's because you're a quote unquote staff DJ.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yes, I know the staff DJs have to I'm not
- 7:29Speaker 1: expecting to have the headlining set, nor do I want it.
- 7:32Speaker 1: But I will say sometimes I you know, I play
- 7:34Speaker 1: an early set and people are like, why do I
- 7:36Speaker 1: suddenly feel like it's six am?
- 7:38Speaker 2: I love? I mean, girl, she can do it all.
- 7:41Speaker 2: That's the thing. I am every woman. It's all in me.
- 7:45Speaker 2: You know you know who else is every woman? G Right, No, Katara?
- 7:51Speaker 2: Is there anything I was gonna say? Katara? Okay, I
- 7:54Speaker 2: don't think we need to discuss this at length. But
- 7:56Speaker 2: like for the Virgins, avatar Ang, The Last Airbender is
- 8:01Speaker 2: in a animated sequel coming out thirteen years after the
- 8:04Speaker 2: original animated series. As I've said before in the show
- 8:07Speaker 2: on Paramount Plus. On Paramount Plus, as I said before
- 8:11Speaker 2: in the show, like one of my favorite series of
- 8:13Speaker 2: all time, which would be what is the name of
- 8:16Speaker 2: that series? The original Avatar The Last Airbender, a Nickelodeon original.
- 8:22Speaker 2: People often refer to it as an anime. It's technically
- 8:25Speaker 2: not an anime. It's an anime inspired animation, and I
- 8:31Speaker 2: I so. And also, I've recently complained about the live action,
- 8:34Speaker 2: which is soulless and disgusting. I to me because I
- 8:41Speaker 2: watched the live action. Unfortunately, this film, Avatar Aang The
- 8:48Speaker 2: Last Airbender. The animated film was so satiating. It was
- 8:54Speaker 2: such a relief, like a bomb. It gave some any
- 9:00Speaker 2: of these characters justice, but was almost never really that serious.
- 9:05Speaker 2: The stakes to me felt so low, like I don't know,
- 9:09Speaker 2: I thought they got pretty high at the end. Yeah.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Well, okay, let's give a brief a brief synopsis for
- 9:14Speaker 1: the virgins who haven't watched. So the film takes place
- 9:17Speaker 1: thirteen years after the end of the animated series. For
- 9:21Speaker 1: anyone who has watched the Legend of Korra after Avatar,
- 9:24Speaker 1: they kind of know where all of the characters end up.
- 9:29Speaker 1: But here we're seeing them post the building of Republic City.
- 9:34Speaker 2: You know, they.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Are trying to undo all of the harm done in
- 9:39Speaker 1: the Hundred Years War. But Avatar Aang, who is now
- 9:43Speaker 1: in his early twenties, is having a hard time because
- 9:47Speaker 1: he's seeing all of his friends and compatriots, you know,
- 9:51Speaker 1: getting to rebuild their lives, getting to rebuild their kingdoms.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And Aang is still the only remaining Airbender, and that
- 10:02Speaker 1: is where he starts the film. We find out there's
- 10:04Speaker 1: this group called the Denied who are hunting down a
- 10:09Speaker 1: staff that belonged to an ancient Avatar that they believe
- 10:14Speaker 1: will give non benders bending powers. And so Aang and
- 10:20Speaker 1: the Avatar Gang, the Gang Gang, all back, they are
- 10:24Speaker 1: known colloquially, reunite to save the world again.
- 10:29Speaker 2: And me and they're all hot. They're all so hot.
- 10:33Speaker 2: And just to clarify what I said earlier when I
- 10:36Speaker 2: said the stakes didn't feel very high, I meant the
- 10:40Speaker 2: stakes as a viewer, like as a viewer who might
- 10:44Speaker 2: have watched the action, the live action, and I was
- 10:49Speaker 2: craving a cannon narrative resolution like this film Avatarang did
- 10:56Speaker 2: not to me like I was watching it, and I
- 11:00Speaker 2: was like, oh, I actually I don't need this film. Actually,
- 11:02Speaker 2: for some reason, I didn't feel like this I needed
- 11:04Speaker 2: this film to accomplish anything for me, Like I didn't
- 11:07Speaker 2: need it to create some sort of canon, narrative, canon relief.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I sort of get what you mean, because there was
- 11:14Speaker 2: a point in the movie where I was like, oh, right,
- 11:17Speaker 2: there has to be a conflict because this is a film,
- 11:20Speaker 2: there needs to be plot. For the first like twenty
- 11:23Speaker 2: minutes of the movie, I was like, I would be
- 11:24Speaker 2: totally okay if we were just hanging out with our besties.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Speak yes, same and girl. They are so fucking hot,
- 11:33Speaker 2: all four of them, literally so fucking.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Bang right, So by four you're saying Soka, Aang, Katara,
- 11:40Speaker 1: and Zuko are ye, you're saying tof isn't hot?
- 11:44Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I mean tof isn't hot? She's not hot?
- 11:46Speaker 1: But wait, I would introduce a fifth person who's so hot,
- 11:50Speaker 1: and that would be Soga always by Dave Bautista, who
- 11:55Speaker 1: is the main spoiler antagonist.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Of the film. He he the way Okay.
- 12:02Speaker 1: First of all, First of all, everyone in this movie
- 12:05Speaker 1: wants to fuck each other.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Second of all, and so distra.
- 12:09Speaker 1: There are two couples who are definitely fucking so Zuko
- 12:14Speaker 1: and Soca for sure.
- 12:16Speaker 2: They It is like I know that.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I have like fandom Yawie brain Rot. But the amount
- 12:22Speaker 1: of moments in this film where they where they make
- 12:26Speaker 1: it explicit that those two were into each other. I mean,
- 12:30Speaker 1: first of all said like Zuko's like he's attractive. I'm
- 12:34Speaker 1: like yes, and and Soka says something about Zuko's cheekbones.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Girl when he gets turned into an old man. Yeah,
- 12:44Speaker 2: I'm just kind of like it almost like just fuck already.
- 12:47Speaker 2: This this film really was vying for fan service. I
- 12:50Speaker 2: think it really accomplished that, Like they even they even
- 12:54Speaker 2: like they you know, they have the cabbage man, Cabbage Man,
- 12:59Speaker 2: there's a little cab sort of about Zutara. Did they
- 13:03Speaker 2: get back to bossing saying yeah, there was no bossing
- 13:08Speaker 2: saying reference was there? There was no bossing, say unfortunately, but
- 13:11Speaker 2: you would think there would be given the level of
- 13:12Speaker 2: fan service. I yeah, I has there been speculation in
- 13:18Speaker 2: the fandom that Zuko is bisexual? I think that's been
- 13:21Speaker 2: like a thing, right or are they just saying that
- 13:23Speaker 2: because he's like moody, he's like the moody character and
- 13:26Speaker 2: there I think because he's like moody. I love that
- 13:29Speaker 2: Stephen Yuen played him. That was like really satisfying to me. Okay.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Some of the other voice acting though, like the bitch
- 13:35Speaker 1: who played Katara sorry to call her a bitch. Wow,
- 13:38Speaker 1: I thought she gave such a horrible rotted performance. I
- 13:44Speaker 1: was not I that did not match up to Katara's animation.
- 13:49Speaker 1: And Katara is such an incredible character and for some
- 13:52Speaker 1: reason the voice really made me like disengage from her
- 13:56Speaker 1: in this film. I also thought for how below the
- 14:00Speaker 1: Qatar is by the fandom, and I feel like so
- 14:02Speaker 1: much of the like Avatar content that I see is
- 14:07Speaker 1: like super cut of every amazing Qatara fight. Like she
- 14:12Speaker 1: had some moments in this film, but she did not
- 14:15Speaker 1: have like a really sickening water bending SmackDown moment, which
- 14:21Speaker 1: was a little disappointing.
- 14:23Speaker 2: That's true, especially given that I thought the action set
- 14:26Speaker 2: pieces in this film were amazing incredible, all the I
- 14:30Speaker 2: mean all the air bending stuff, like when when Toga
- 14:35Speaker 2: is teaching Aang how to airbend the tornadoo the tornadoes,
- 14:39Speaker 2: or like when Aang is going up the mountain the
- 14:42Speaker 2: mountain piece. The animation in this film was stunning, and
- 14:47Speaker 2: the whole time I was watching it, I just kept thinking,
- 14:49Speaker 2: why was this not released in theaters? I would have
- 14:52Speaker 2: loved to see this in a movie theater. I completely agree.
- 14:56Speaker 2: I thought it was it was owed so much more.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I kind of wish there was more sit into its release.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I felt like the release was so unsung. I had
- 15:04Speaker 2: to hear about it from Cherry who was like, I
- 15:06Speaker 2: liked it, and I was like, wait, what, I didn't
- 15:07Speaker 2: even know this movie was coming out. I want to
- 15:13Speaker 2: go back to like, how fucking hot except for toave
- 15:19Speaker 2: aang was how fucking hot all these characters were except
- 15:22Speaker 2: for to who never forget is a cop canonically is
- 15:26Speaker 2: a cop? Sorry? And also like, uh, I know that,
- 15:29Speaker 2: like eventually she like learns to not be like a
- 15:31Speaker 2: kind of punitive little bit, but she's so horrible and
- 15:35Speaker 2: grading in the first her first couple of episodes when
- 15:38Speaker 2: she's trying to teach Avatar. I'm trying to found her
- 15:42Speaker 2: grading on. She's annoying as fuck. I think she's cool
- 15:46Speaker 2: as fuck, but yeah, I think her characterization in the
- 15:49Speaker 2: beginning is really tough and and and she does kind
- 15:52Speaker 2: of in the in the world of the original series,
- 15:54Speaker 2: she does kind of one of those lesson of like, oh,
- 15:56Speaker 2: you do need to actually be nice in order to
- 15:59Speaker 2: have reallylationships. But Anyways, going back to the schometer, I
- 16:05Speaker 2: know it broke, watching broke, okay, and look the virgins.
- 16:10Speaker 2: I know you're tired of Rose and I sitting on
- 16:13Speaker 2: our asses and being like oh yeah, oh yeah, so
- 16:17Speaker 2: my god. I know it's like it's like any any.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Transphobe ever listened to this podcast, they would have like
- 16:24Speaker 1: all the ammunition they needed to say that trans women
- 16:26Speaker 1: are just like disgusting predators virgins.
- 16:29Speaker 2: I know that you think that we are pervs, because
- 16:32Speaker 2: we are. I know that you have one of the
- 16:34Speaker 2: pillars of this podcast. Yeah, perversity, perversity. I know that
- 16:38Speaker 2: you think that we're this like lascivious. Is that even
- 16:41Speaker 2: the right word? Yes, fucking disgusting, little like losers, like
- 16:46Speaker 2: lusting after everything. I must clarify that what Avatar Aang
- 16:53Speaker 2: did for me in this film is so far and
- 16:57Speaker 2: beyond any sort of thirst I felt for an animated
- 17:01Speaker 2: character in a very long time, Like so he was
- 17:04Speaker 2: your number one in the movie, oh ten thousand percent,
- 17:09Speaker 2: no contest, but like Avatar and was the hottest in
- 17:13Speaker 2: this film. However, obviously you must give props to all
- 17:17Speaker 2: the other characters who are rocking bundles. It's like sixty
- 17:21Speaker 2: inch human units. Okay, Taga Qatar and Zuko had the
- 17:25Speaker 2: most beautiful hair, so stunning. I also have to say
- 17:31Speaker 2: that Sokka his opening scene when his hair just automatically
- 17:37Speaker 2: flops and he has a gorgeous boy band number one
- 17:43Speaker 2: was coming. Oh my god, he was the hottest to
- 17:45Speaker 2: me in this movie. Yes, so hot he had me.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I was a brick house watching this film. Jesus a
- 17:55Speaker 2: brick house. But girl, no, I really cannot understate how
- 18:02Speaker 2: fucking bricked up I was this movie. It was categorically
- 18:07Speaker 2: so it was on another level. You think you've heard
- 18:10Speaker 2: us talk about being person born, this was on another
- 18:12Speaker 2: level for me. This movie was porn But yeah, and
- 18:14Speaker 2: I don't think it's our fault. I think it's not.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Our movie was engineered to be pornography. This, I say,
- 18:20Speaker 2: was zero irony. We I know we often speak and hyperbole.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I know we were prone to exaggeration and hyperbole before
- 18:26Speaker 2: ever in our lives. Yeah, but girl, girl, this movie
- 18:31Speaker 2: obviously played into the fan service, and one of those
- 18:35Speaker 2: tenants was understanding, Okay, you had crushes on some of
- 18:39Speaker 2: these characters when you were a kid, so now they're
- 18:41Speaker 2: all grown up, we are going to pump up the
- 18:45Speaker 2: volume and ensure that you are aroused during We're going
- 18:49Speaker 2: to pump up the muscles. They were all so.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Jacked, so jacked, jacked, and the women were jacked.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Qatara's arms, Oh my god, and like hold me down.
- 19:00Speaker 2: And I know you were talking about zuku Wan Saka,
- 19:02Speaker 2: but like the vibe that Aang had with Toga, the
- 19:07Speaker 2: sun girl stuff going on, I was so I was
- 19:13Speaker 2: want Toga wanted that av a tussy, have a tussy.
- 19:18Speaker 2: They knew, they knew. He wanted to know where those
- 19:21Speaker 2: arrows ended up. Okay, he wanted to where are those
- 19:23Speaker 2: arrows pointing to be? He wanted to come bend. That's
- 19:26Speaker 2: what he wanted to do, is come water would would
- 19:29Speaker 2: Qatar be able to bend? Come?
- 19:32Speaker 1: I'm sure cum has water in it, right, Okay. There
- 19:35Speaker 1: was another part of this movie that pissed me off,
- 19:38Speaker 1: which was when they're fighting like towards the end and
- 19:41Speaker 1: they're surrounded and Katar goes, oh no, I'm out of water,
- 19:46Speaker 1: when canonically we know Katara we learned this in the
- 19:51Speaker 1: original series that Katara can pull water molecules out of
- 19:54Speaker 1: the air.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Out of anything. The only way that would happen is
- 19:58Speaker 2: if she was in like a completely dry vacuum. You
- 20:02Speaker 2: know what wouldn't which she couldn't be alive in Well,
- 20:06Speaker 2: I think that there there's a I think there was
- 20:08Speaker 2: maybe a moment in this series where they're like in
- 20:11Speaker 2: some sort of a volcanic sort of environment where there's
- 20:14Speaker 2: no moisture in the air or something like like that
- 20:16Speaker 2: just create an excuse Qatar like sorry, it felt like
- 20:19Speaker 2: they didn't give her as much to do. I thought
- 20:21Speaker 2: she kind of got nerved a little bit, just because
- 20:24Speaker 2: because she looks awesome. But as an as a love
- 20:27Speaker 2: interest to Aang, there's something also that makes that character.
- 20:31Speaker 2: It weakens that character a little bit because to me,
- 20:33Speaker 2: obviously you root for Aang and Qatar to get to
- 20:36Speaker 2: get together in the series. You do, I did? I
- 20:39Speaker 2: personally don't know, but I think that I think an
- 20:42Speaker 2: average viewer does.
- 20:43Speaker 1: But no, I think an average viewer wanted Katara to
- 20:45Speaker 1: end up with Zuko.
- 20:46Speaker 2: It makes it would make so much more sense. They
- 20:49Speaker 2: have the better they have, the better storyline. But also
- 20:52Speaker 2: say that child in the series.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Like well, I really felt like this film. As nice
- 20:59Speaker 1: as it was to see the gang get back together,
- 21:03Speaker 1: I did think that this movie focused more on Aang
- 21:07Speaker 1: than the animated series.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I like which which was like it was just
- 21:13Speaker 2: a slightly different oh yeah vibe because the original series,
- 21:18Speaker 2: like it was, it was much more balanced than this
- 21:21Speaker 2: really was Aang's story, which I which I get and
- 21:24Speaker 2: appreciate because I guess I did like Aang was always
- 21:28Speaker 2: kind of the least interesting character to me in the
- 21:31Speaker 2: original series. What Yeah, well, okay, I guess I I
- 21:38Speaker 2: I could see it. I could agree with a version
- 21:41Speaker 2: of that because I do think that the classic kind
- 21:45Speaker 2: of Joseph Campbell esque chosen One heroes journey that Aang
- 21:51Speaker 2: is archetyping is like boring, It's very trodden.
- 21:56Speaker 1: But I'm also he was a child and he was not,
- 21:58Speaker 1: so there was no there was nothing I could do
- 22:00Speaker 1: with it.
- 22:00Speaker 2: But's characterization I disagree, though, be on the rest of it,
- 22:03Speaker 2: because Ang's characterization, I think is fabulous. I think he's
- 22:06Speaker 2: so joyous and.
- 22:08Speaker 1: I'm not saying he's a bad character. I just think
- 22:10Speaker 1: everyone else in the show was more interesting to me.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Well, but not except for Toff. You would would you
- 22:16Speaker 2: say Top is more or less interesting? Taf is actually
- 22:18Speaker 2: much more complex. Yeah, I liked Tof is a character
- 22:22Speaker 2: I didn't necessarily enjoy her, but I found her a
- 22:25Speaker 2: more rich character. Let's rank them right now, Let's rank
- 22:29Speaker 2: them right now? Okay? Number one for me Katara Yeah,
- 22:35Speaker 2: but but and followed up swiftly. But second, who could
- 22:42Speaker 2: sometimes be first Zuko? Yeah, then Uncle Iro, then Uncle
- 22:48Speaker 2: Iro for are we saying kids only? Let's do kids only? Okay?
- 22:52Speaker 2: Then sok than Tof, than Suki than Ang. Who the
- 22:57Speaker 2: fuck is Suki? Suki is the Kyoshi warrior who Soka
- 23:01Speaker 2: has a thing with. Oh, right, and she is.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I always thought it was weird that she wasn't in
- 23:06Speaker 1: this movie because she is part of the gang.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just but I don't remember how her narrative
- 23:12Speaker 2: ties up, and that I don't remember how her story
- 23:14Speaker 2: I need to I need to rewatch the fil I'm
- 23:16Speaker 2: going to actually probably rewatch the third season and then
- 23:19Speaker 2: rewatch this film, Like that's how much I enjoyed the
- 23:22Speaker 2: action set pieces. But I think my ranking would probably
- 23:27Speaker 2: be I would probably say Zuko first, then Aang, then
- 23:36Speaker 2: then Katara, then Sokka vent TOF. I know, that's like
- 23:41Speaker 2: so wrong. I think that Sokka is like obviously the
- 23:45Speaker 2: reason that the series is such a hard comedy, but
- 23:48Speaker 2: he is also such a man in the series, in
- 23:51Speaker 2: the original series that that sometimes like would annoy me,
- 23:56Speaker 2: I you know, and also you know how much I
- 23:58Speaker 2: love a broody Judy, like I love a kind of
- 24:01Speaker 2: like Zuko to me was like, oh, he just like
- 24:04Speaker 2: outranks all of these girls. Okay, Well if we put
- 24:06Speaker 2: Azula in the mix, where would she go? Okay? I mean,
- 24:11Speaker 2: a fucking Azula for sure would rank below Zuko, and
- 24:17Speaker 2: Aang I think would rank third. I think would be
- 24:19Speaker 2: above Katara, would be above Sokka, and tof Yeah, I
- 24:23Speaker 2: mean one of my all time favorite villains. Her writing
- 24:26Speaker 2: that fucking lizard. Whatever the fuck that can smell anything
- 24:31Speaker 2: anywhere on the planet if it tracks it. I can't
- 24:34Speaker 2: even remember the fucking that's.
- 24:35Speaker 1: A different character. What wait, that's a different bitch with
- 24:38Speaker 1: black hair.
- 24:39Speaker 2: No, who is that? I forget what her name is.
- 24:42Speaker 2: She's a bounty hunter. I thought that was a Zula. No,
- 24:47Speaker 2: I'm looking it up right now. Her name the mo
- 24:51Speaker 2: it is Azula. Ty Lee also writes the Lizard, But
- 24:54Speaker 2: Azula does write the lizard. Are you sure?
- 24:57Speaker 1: Because I thought I think you're talking about the other
- 24:59Speaker 1: bounty hunter who who rides the giant.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Lizard Azula riding lizard the mongoose Lizards can be Yeah, yeah,
- 25:07Speaker 2: she does ride the lizard. Hush. I think I'm sorry
- 25:11Speaker 2: I'm referring to AI Overview, but I'm fact checking on
- 25:14Speaker 2: Avatar Wiki and it does say that the Mongoose Lizards
- 25:19Speaker 2: are written by the three of them. Oh, I don't
- 25:22Speaker 2: remember that. I also, my brain is also kind of
- 25:26Speaker 2: being like, no, it was a separate bitch. But anyways,
- 25:29Speaker 2: we'll look it up and get back to you, virgins.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I have to say we have a heart out today,
- 25:34Speaker 2: and so we must discuss Spider Man.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Yes, can you, as they sang in the Wiz, can
- 25:41Speaker 1: you hear a brand New Day?
- 25:44Speaker 2: I can? And well, I don't know if I can.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Actually, we're now going to talk about Spider Man Brand
- 25:50Speaker 1: New Day aka Jean Gray Film zero.
- 25:56Speaker 2: This is Jane Gray Film zero. It's it's not a
- 25:58Speaker 2: Spider Man movie.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Okay, some way, So I will say I will preface
- 26:03Speaker 1: by saying I'm not a huge fan of the Tom
- 26:07Speaker 1: Holland Spider Man movies. I don't really like him. I
- 26:12Speaker 1: don't really like his version of Peter Parker. I just
- 26:15Speaker 1: find him very one note and whiny. I did think
- 26:20Speaker 1: this film complicated his character a little in a way
- 26:23Speaker 1: that I did appreciate. But I'm just kind of setting
- 26:26Speaker 1: up that that's what I was coming into this too.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I also, you know, came in kind of no. Everyone
- 26:34Speaker 1: has been speculating that Sadie Sink was playing Jean Gray
- 26:37Speaker 1: for literally years now.
- 26:39Speaker 2: It's spoiled for anybody that wants to watch this film.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I mean, it was spoiled by Steve Lacy on the
- 26:43Speaker 1: Red carpet days before the movie came out, which was
- 26:45Speaker 1: so funny. Of course a gate of course, a gig
- 26:47Speaker 1: guy did it.
- 26:48Speaker 2: By the way, spoilers, spoilers, spoilers, boilers, it's impossible to
- 26:51Speaker 2: talk about this film without revealing the spoilers. But like,
- 26:54Speaker 2: I liked that it wasn't treated necessarily as like a
- 26:57Speaker 2: I mean, it was kind of treated as a huge
- 26:59Speaker 2: reveal in the film, not but like the it's not
- 27:02Speaker 2: like a huge reveal where you don't find out until
- 27:04Speaker 2: the very end. You do find out like kind of
- 27:07Speaker 2: almost midway through the movie. So a very like TLDR
- 27:13Speaker 2: overview of what happens in the film. So you know,
- 27:16Speaker 2: we're coming off we can we actually back up? I
- 27:19Speaker 2: can we back up slightly? And just because like I
- 27:22Speaker 2: do think the MCU is extremely complicated for the virgins,
- 27:25Speaker 2: can you actually describe the Tom Han films leading up
- 27:29Speaker 2: to this and then the film, like just like of
- 27:32Speaker 2: the there are three films that came before this.
- 27:34Speaker 1: And uh yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna talk about where
- 27:38Speaker 1: Peter Parker is coming from when this film starts.
- 27:41Speaker 2: I'm projecting how confusing I find these.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Songs so so so Tom Holland Spider Man started his
- 27:50Speaker 1: time in the MCU really is kind of like a
- 27:53Speaker 1: side piece to Tony Stark. Like we started the Spider Man,
- 27:58Speaker 1: this Spider Man franchise differently than any of the others.
- 28:01Speaker 1: You know, Spider Man is very classically a street level hero.
- 28:06Speaker 1: He stops local crime, and in the movies he started
- 28:10Speaker 1: out as Tony Starks protege. So he was really in
- 28:13Speaker 1: the more kind of cosmic side of the MCU from
- 28:17Speaker 1: the beginning, and what those films really have been doing
- 28:20Speaker 1: are contracting his story and making them smaller. So in
- 28:23Speaker 1: the last film, Spider Man really like became part of
- 28:26Speaker 1: this you know, multi versal saga, and we brought in
- 28:30Speaker 1: Spider Man from other universes, but that film ended with
- 28:35Speaker 1: everyone in the Marvel Cinematic universe forgetting that Peter Parker
- 28:40Speaker 1: is Spider Man and that he existed at all. So
- 28:45Speaker 1: Spider Man, he was at his lowest, fat, nasty, and broke.
- 28:48Speaker 1: He came on this bitch mad as hell. So the
- 28:51Speaker 1: film starts, he is, you know, living in total isolation.
- 28:56Speaker 1: He has this little AI that he made himself, which
- 28:59Speaker 1: is vote by Naomi Watts.
- 29:03Speaker 2: I don't know if you knew that. Oh I didn't
- 29:05Speaker 2: know that. Yeah, and isn't Evie was previously Iron Man's helping.
- 29:12Speaker 1: This is a new This is a new AI who
- 29:16Speaker 1: he has built himself. So he is now you know,
- 29:20Speaker 1: he's he's now sort of the Spider Man that like
- 29:23Speaker 1: people know more classically from the comics. You know, he's
- 29:26Speaker 1: he's stopping local crime, he's working with the police chief.
- 29:30Speaker 1: He's your friendly neighborhood Spider Man. But he What happens
- 29:36Speaker 1: in this film is his hormones start going out of
- 29:40Speaker 1: control because of his isolation. His spider hormones are taking
- 29:45Speaker 1: over and he has to start taking hormone blockers.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Well, he invents a hormone blocker Yeah, he's sort of
- 29:53Speaker 2: the first Spider trans Well, there's a there's a forgive Me.
- 29:57Speaker 2: There's like a blocker patch, isn't there. Yeah, so he
- 30:01Speaker 2: basically invents like a high tech hormone blocker patch he does,
- 30:04Speaker 2: which does have you know, less funny trans coded implications
- 30:10Speaker 2: for the MCU, because actually I could build on that. Well,
- 30:13Speaker 2: let's talk about it in a second. I actually, okay,
- 30:15Speaker 2: there are some funny things in there. Yeah.
- 30:17Speaker 1: So the film, So the antagonist in the film is
- 30:24Speaker 1: a fake out. So we have this, you know, telepathic
- 30:28Speaker 1: villain who is mind controlling people seemingly to get into
- 30:34Speaker 1: Damage Control, which is this government agency that has sprung
- 30:37Speaker 1: up to deal with enhanced humans or people with superpowers,
- 30:45Speaker 1: and this telepathic villain is trying to get something from them.
- 30:51Speaker 1: We find out that this villain is in fact Jean Gray,
- 30:55Speaker 1: making her first appearance in this version of the See You.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Even though we know that in Avengers Doomsday we will
- 31:03Speaker 1: be getting the Fox X Men involved somehow, but in
- 31:08Speaker 1: this universe that we're in, Jean Gray is that we
- 31:12Speaker 1: know of the first actual mutant and there are some
- 31:16Speaker 1: interesting theories about how that might play out that I
- 31:19Speaker 1: think we can get into a little bit later, but
- 31:23Speaker 1: really this is a film that is about being trans.
- 31:28Speaker 2: I would agree, I would I would agree, And it's
- 31:31Speaker 2: a very actually nuanced depiction against the medicalization of transits,
- 31:36Speaker 2: I would say. But before actually we go into that,
- 31:38Speaker 2: I do you I kind of part of me wants
- 31:42Speaker 2: to end on the trans stuff, which seems more interesting,
- 31:44Speaker 2: and I want to like get out like MCU. I
- 31:47Speaker 2: want to get out, like what do I mean for
- 31:49Speaker 2: a little bit, what do we love about the MCU stuff?
- 31:52Speaker 2: And what do we not like about the film?
- 31:54Speaker 1: Okay, so I really liked the depiction of Jean Gray.
- 31:59Speaker 1: She was so fucking good. She was sickening, she was
- 32:02Speaker 1: very sickening. She had some banger lines. So as when
- 32:07Speaker 1: the film starts, we're seeing her just as a telepath,
- 32:10Speaker 1: which I thought was very interesting, and I was kind
- 32:12Speaker 1: of wondering through the whole film, Okay, how are we
- 32:15Speaker 1: going to introduce her other powers? And this actually kind
- 32:20Speaker 1: of becomes a Jean Gray origin story. So as it
- 32:23Speaker 1: turns out Damage Control is evil. They kidnap her, they're
- 32:27Speaker 1: going to experiment on her, and she figures out that
- 32:30Speaker 1: the sister she's been searching for the whole movie was
- 32:34Speaker 1: killed by them in their clutches, and that is what
- 32:36Speaker 1: makes her powers evolve. We see these brain scans and
- 32:40Speaker 1: her brain starts lighting up very pink, which for comic
- 32:44Speaker 1: readers is very gratifying because Jean's powers have always been
- 32:48Speaker 1: pink in the comics. I was a little annoyed that
- 32:53Speaker 1: they made her actual powers look very much like Invisible
- 32:56Speaker 1: Woman's and Fantastic four. I would have liked to see
- 32:59Speaker 1: that pink tinge carry through a note for Kevin Faige
- 33:04Speaker 1: going going forward in the whatever the Mutant saga is
- 33:08Speaker 1: going to be an x men. I also really liked
- 33:11Speaker 1: that Jane didn't give a fuck and was potentially killing people,
- 33:16Speaker 1: which a lot of people online seem to be mad about.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Well, she kills that guy that gets hits by he
- 33:21Speaker 2: that guy get gets hit by a car, and I
- 33:23Speaker 2: think that's the one the one killed that I actually was.
- 33:26Speaker 2: I thought that was a kind of stunning kind of
- 33:30Speaker 2: kill in that it was really shocking, But people that
- 33:33Speaker 2: was kind of almost a throwaway in my opinion.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Yeah, people are very much hand ringing on Twitter over
- 33:38Speaker 1: Gene being Morley Gray. I will raise you the fact
- 33:43Speaker 1: that Jean Gray has literally always in the in the
- 33:46Speaker 1: comics has literally destroyed planets.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Yes, like literally, are you kidding me? She's turning evil
- 33:52Speaker 2: every other franchise.
- 33:53Speaker 1: And then also, I think a more important point to
- 33:57Speaker 1: bring up is that none of these people are real.
- 34:00Speaker 2: They're not real. They're not real. Is good?
- 34:03Speaker 1: So you in these I'm coming on Twitter to say,
- 34:06Speaker 1: oh my god, how can you support Gene when she
- 34:08Speaker 1: killed these people like murders bad? How about you go
- 34:13Speaker 1: back to tenth grade and remember that fiction isn't real,
- 34:20Speaker 1: that these are stories, and stories are what so powerful?
- 34:24Speaker 2: So powerful? I'm gonna say it. Actually, Uh, these films
- 34:28Speaker 2: are really meant to be kind of for all audiences.
- 34:31Speaker 2: They are Pg. Thirteen, but they they are meant to
- 34:33Speaker 2: be for children, parents' families. And because of that, they
- 34:37Speaker 2: can't really go there the way I don't know a
- 34:41Speaker 2: Spider Man two really goes there where like Spider Man two,
- 34:45Speaker 2: Toby Maguire with Doctor Octavius, that's like such a horror,
- 34:50Speaker 2: you know, like that that he's so scary, and when
- 34:53Speaker 2: his tentacles come alive and they're like mass murdering, it's
- 34:56Speaker 2: like such a heightening of the stakes of what this
- 34:59Speaker 2: villain is doing. And I do. I know that Jean
- 35:03Speaker 2: Gray is not the villain, but I do kind of
- 35:06Speaker 2: wish her deadliness was better conveyed. I thought that that
- 35:11Speaker 2: when one of those patrons gets hit by a car
- 35:15Speaker 2: because of her, it was such a throwaway because it
- 35:18Speaker 2: was essentially the only person we saw her kill. And
- 35:21Speaker 2: I kind of wanted her deadliness to be underscored because
- 35:26Speaker 2: canonically she is deadly, like I wanted the film to
- 35:31Speaker 2: go there with her.
- 35:32Speaker 1: And I did really appreciate the take on a young
- 35:37Speaker 1: Jean Gray because in the comics, like Jean Gray's origin
- 35:41Speaker 1: story is incredibly traumatic. You know, she first discovers her
- 35:45Speaker 1: powers when her best friend is killed and Jean goes
- 35:49Speaker 1: into her mind and experiences her death alongside her, which
- 35:54Speaker 1: really fucks her up. And I do agree with you.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I think she could have had to hire a body count.
- 36:00Speaker 1: People would probably be even more annoying online had she
- 36:04Speaker 1: sorry and to any of those people. Another thing I'll
- 36:09Speaker 1: say is we need Gene to be out of control
- 36:14Speaker 1: to necessitate the founding of the X Men. We need
- 36:18Speaker 1: to see an out of control mutant to understand that
- 36:22Speaker 1: Professor x Will need to start a school for gifted
- 36:26Speaker 1: youngsters to teach mutants how to harness their powers. I
- 36:31Speaker 1: think my biggest question after watching this movie is, how
- 36:35Speaker 1: is the MCU If mutants are going to be existing
- 36:41Speaker 1: alongside heroes like Spider Man in this previously established Marvel
- 36:46Speaker 1: cinematic universe, how are the x How are we going
- 36:50Speaker 1: to make it make sense that humans love heroes like
- 36:55Speaker 1: Spider Man Man but hate mutants. Always worked in the
- 37:01Speaker 1: comics because you know, they're separate books, they're separate runs,
- 37:06Speaker 1: even though the heroes intersect a lot more in the
- 37:09Speaker 1: comics than they do in film. So I'm very interested in,
- 37:14Speaker 1: like how they are going to recnonize the mutants. Like
- 37:20Speaker 1: I saw one theory that like maybe Jeane got her
- 37:23Speaker 1: powers in Thanos's Snap and that's how people are going
- 37:27Speaker 1: to start mutating because of all the cosmic energy. But
- 37:31Speaker 1: it will be very I'm just very interested to see
- 37:35Speaker 1: how they're going to in a world in which superheroes,
- 37:40Speaker 1: the Avengers, Wakanda, etc. Already exist, How all these new
- 37:45Speaker 1: people with powers cropping up are going to become an
- 37:49Speaker 1: enemy of humanity because that is the core of every
- 37:53Speaker 1: X Men story. You need to have it to make
- 37:56Speaker 1: them work on film.
- 37:58Speaker 2: I have to part of what I caught from this
- 38:03Speaker 2: film is that they're actually creating an inextricable alignment between
- 38:09Speaker 2: Spider Man's like special powers and the mutant race, and
- 38:15Speaker 2: that in actuality, maybe mutants have existed all along. Maybe
- 38:20Speaker 2: even Spider Man is a mutant, especially since this film
- 38:23Speaker 2: specifically makes the choice to do away with the technological
- 38:28Speaker 2: bits and bobs that make this version of Spider Man
- 38:31Speaker 2: Spider Man and say no, actually it is his DNA.
- 38:35Speaker 2: He does have come shooting out of his wrists like
- 38:38Speaker 2: the original iteration of the films. I have so much
- 38:43Speaker 2: say about actually the X Men of it all. I
- 38:45Speaker 2: kind of want to dig into it, but I'm sorry,
- 38:47Speaker 2: I'm just going to be annoying and really really really
- 38:49Speaker 2: virgin out for anybody that has no clue what we're
- 38:55Speaker 2: talking about right now, because I personally am really confused
- 38:59Speaker 2: by these films, and I'm gonna tap you in probably
- 39:01Speaker 2: real quick. Rose, Yes please, But Spider Man one, two,
- 39:05Speaker 2: and three, Toby Maguire owned by Sony Fabulous Movies. I mean,
- 39:10Speaker 2: everyone hates the third one. I actually really love a
- 39:13Speaker 2: lot of the third one. I think it hell, it
- 39:16Speaker 2: just didn't be cut compared to the first two difficult. Whatever.
- 39:19Speaker 2: The series gets a reboot with Mark Webb starring Andrew
- 39:24Speaker 2: Garfield The Amazing Spider Man, The Amazing Spider Man two.
- 39:27Speaker 2: I love that Andrew that version of Spider Man. It's
- 39:31Speaker 2: a much more comedic Spider Man. I've never seen those.
- 39:35Speaker 2: They're fabulous. He's so fucking funny. He's also kind of
- 39:39Speaker 2: the most Spidery. I would say he's the most acrobatic.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Toby Maguire's Spider Man has the superpowers come shoots out
- 39:48Speaker 2: of his wrist because he is part spider Andrew Garfield
- 39:51Speaker 2: spider Man all tech, so he is just a genius
- 39:54Speaker 2: who fabricates and develops all of these different designs.
- 39:58Speaker 1: But I think that's also true to Spider Man's comic
- 40:01Speaker 1: book origins. I do actually think the come shooting out
- 40:04Speaker 1: of the Risks was a movie and menche.
- 40:06Speaker 2: It was, I believe, or maybe there's like another iteration
- 40:09Speaker 2: in the comics where in a different universe, but the
- 40:11Speaker 2: original original Spider Man is all tech. So well, he
- 40:15Speaker 2: has superpowers, but like the the webs are technical, right,
- 40:19Speaker 2: are technological? Right? Forgive me? Forgive me right? The super
- 40:22Speaker 2: strength Tom Holland era is this reboot incorporates Spider Man
- 40:29Speaker 2: into the MCU. So after spider Man two, it was
- 40:32Speaker 2: kind of a bit of a critical flop. They didn't
- 40:35Speaker 2: want to make a third amazing Spider Man movie with
- 40:37Speaker 2: Andrew Garfield, and so Sony was kind of like, where
- 40:40Speaker 2: do we go from here? I guess we have to
- 40:42Speaker 2: enter a deal with Marvel and finally let Spider Man
- 40:45Speaker 2: be a part of the Marvel cinematic universe. Then we
- 40:48Speaker 2: get Tom Holland's movies one, two, and three, and the
- 40:53Speaker 2: deliciousness of the last movie multiverse connections, bringing in the
- 40:58Speaker 2: other Spider Man's If you haven't seen that film No
- 41:01Speaker 2: Way Home, it's so good. But I think what I
- 41:03Speaker 2: would love for you to explain, Rose is as Spider
- 41:07Speaker 2: Man has been incorporated into the MCU. As you summarized earlier,
- 41:10Speaker 2: you know Tony Starks in these movies, Doctor Strangers, in
- 41:13Speaker 2: these movies, the movies are become kind of inextricable from
- 41:16Speaker 2: the other films and the cinematic universe. What is going
- 41:19Speaker 2: on with X Men? I think I've made you summarize
- 41:22Speaker 2: it before, but what's going on with X Men? And
- 41:23Speaker 2: what is the significance of X Men finally entering the MCU.
- 41:27Speaker 1: So X menu is has been owned by Fox. The
- 41:33Speaker 1: original X Men films from the early two thousands, which
- 41:37Speaker 1: many credit as the beginning of the modern superhero movie genre,
- 41:42Speaker 1: were all twentieth Century Fox films, and all of the
- 41:46Speaker 1: X Men films since then have been the same recent
- 41:49Speaker 1: In recent years, twentieth Century Fox was absorbed by Disney,
- 41:54Speaker 1: meaning that the Mutants could now be in them like before,
- 42:01Speaker 1: we had to do things like you know, Wanda Maximov
- 42:06Speaker 1: is a mutant, is a daughter of Magneto, but in
- 42:10Speaker 1: the MCU films because they were not allowed to use
- 42:13Speaker 1: that canon, she was you know, re canonized as someone
- 42:18Speaker 1: whose powers came from the cosmic energy of the Infinity Stones.
- 42:22Speaker 1: And also you know, she's the Scarlet Witch.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 42:25Speaker 1: What this means is that a new era of X
- 42:29Speaker 1: Men films are coming into the MCU, and what it's
- 42:32Speaker 1: looking like is the X Men will be taking place
- 42:36Speaker 1: of the Avengers as the thing that the greater MCU
- 42:40Speaker 1: sort of revolves around, you know, instead of the Avengers
- 42:44Speaker 1: movies being the place where all of the heroes come together.
- 42:48Speaker 1: What people are speculating is that the future of the
- 42:50Speaker 1: MCU will now hinge around the x Men. So I
- 42:55Speaker 1: think what they're doing here is what the MCU used
- 42:59Speaker 1: to do, which is seeding these characters who will eventually
- 43:02Speaker 1: become kind of the wheel spokes around which the story's turn.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Seeding them as minor characters, are supporting characters in other
- 43:11Speaker 1: films and building them up through other appearances. So it's
- 43:15Speaker 1: been it's been thought that Sadie Sink will possibly next
- 43:21Speaker 1: appear in not Avengers Doomsday, which comes out this year,
- 43:24Speaker 1: but the next Avengers film, Secret Wars, which comes out
- 43:28Speaker 1: next year.
- 43:28Speaker 2: I believe.
- 43:31Speaker 1: It does make sense for Jean Gray to be the
- 43:34Speaker 1: beginning of this new era of X Men. Jean Gray
- 43:36Speaker 1: is one of the original five X Men, so that's
- 43:40Speaker 1: Beast Jean Gray, Storm, Cyclops, and Angel.
- 43:45Speaker 2: I believe.
- 43:48Speaker 1: We have some rumored casting for who could be playing
- 43:53Speaker 1: some of these roles.
- 43:54Speaker 2: It's ben talked about this before.
- 43:56Speaker 1: So samaraw Weaving last weekend was confirmed casting as Emma Frost.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Absolutely genius, She's so perfect to play Emma Frost. The
- 44:07Speaker 1: rumored casting that we have now is Charles Milton is Beast,
- 44:10Speaker 1: Cooper Hoffman as Psyclops, Jamee Lawson, who was in Sinners
- 44:17Speaker 1: as Storm, Kaylee Spaney as Rogue Indian Avaret from Obsession
- 44:22Speaker 1: as Mystique, which I don't know how I feel about, so.
- 44:25Speaker 2: That's just rumored.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Adam Rumer, Yeah, Adam Driver is mister Sinister, which would
- 44:30Speaker 1: be pretty sickonding and Bill Scarsgard as Professor X. Again,
- 44:34Speaker 1: these are all rumors except for Samorrow Weaving. She and
- 44:38Speaker 1: Sadie Sink as Jean Gray are the only confirmed X
- 44:41Speaker 1: Men characters we have now looking forward to the future
- 44:45Speaker 1: of the MCU, so I think there's a lot of
- 44:49Speaker 1: question marks about how this is going to work, Like,
- 44:54Speaker 1: are we going to see a very traditional X Men
- 44:56Speaker 1: origin story. It's kind of looking that way, since we're
- 45:00Speaker 1: getting like a young, almost teenage Gene who is very
- 45:04Speaker 1: much at the infancy of her powers. And also like
- 45:06Speaker 1: we just don't know about x We don't know about
- 45:09Speaker 1: mutants in this universe yet except for little clues we've
- 45:12Speaker 1: gotten through things like Miss Marvel. So we are at
- 45:17Speaker 1: the infancy of this new era of X Men. I'm
- 45:19Speaker 1: very excited for it because I'm fucking sick of the Avengers.
- 45:23Speaker 1: It's time for real men. It's time for real Men
- 45:27Speaker 1: aka Mystique to step in and take over the mcu.
- 45:32Speaker 1: I'm so excited about the dawn of a new X
- 45:35Speaker 1: Men era. So does that sort of answer some at
- 45:38Speaker 1: least some of your questions.
- 45:39Speaker 2: It does, And I want to say, let me, I'll
- 45:42Speaker 2: get my complaints out of the way and then we
- 45:43Speaker 2: can end on like more fun stuff. But like, I
- 45:47Speaker 2: do not love that I just to everything that you
- 45:53Speaker 2: just summarize for the Virgins Virgins, I'd be curious to
- 45:56Speaker 2: know whether you knew all of that already or if
- 45:58Speaker 2: you're like just going into this totally cold. I am
- 46:01Speaker 2: annoyed that I have to go into the I can't
- 46:03Speaker 2: really go into these movies without watching several YouTube recaps,
- 46:07Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Like I do have to
- 46:09Speaker 2: jog my memory on what different universes like Spider Man
- 46:13Speaker 2: went into, what the relative movies are like Black Widow, Punisher, Hulk,
- 46:19Speaker 2: et cetera. Like I spider Man isn't always has been
- 46:22Speaker 2: my favorite superhero. I would. I actually am pretty sure
- 46:26Speaker 2: every single Spider Man movie has like made me cry,
- 46:29Speaker 2: Like this film made me cry twice? It did, yes twice?
- 46:34Speaker 2: Did I wait was one of them? During the ant
- 46:37Speaker 2: May Jean Gray scene? Yes? Because I was cackling with laughter.
- 46:42Speaker 2: During that because stupid it was. I thought it was
- 46:45Speaker 2: so beautiful. I'm sorry, but that's like not because I
- 46:49Speaker 2: think it's like the best filmmaking ever. I think it's
- 46:51Speaker 2: actually really corny and like kind of like it's like
- 46:54Speaker 2: right there on the table, it's way too obvious. But
- 46:56Speaker 2: I thought it was stupid because this because these cares
- 47:00Speaker 2: mean nothing to each other, This moment has no emotional weight.
- 47:04Speaker 2: But but but somebody, but you could you could say
- 47:06Speaker 2: the same thing of Jean Gray's involvement in this film
- 47:08Speaker 2: at all, Like, yes, Jean Gray is unambiguously cool, She's
- 47:12Speaker 2: fucking awesome. I would also say that Sadie Singh's performance
- 47:15Speaker 2: is the best performance in this movie. I think Tom
- 47:17Speaker 2: Holland is a close second. He was also great in
- 47:19Speaker 2: this film. But like, did that really justify the fact
- 47:23Speaker 2: that a third of this movie was Jean Gray's movie?
- 47:26Speaker 2: Like it literally was Sorry, Like.
- 47:28Speaker 1: No, I agree, you know, I do think that's a
- 47:32Speaker 1: very it is a very comic book way to tell
- 47:35Speaker 1: a story.
- 47:36Speaker 2: But that's what this is. Now.
- 47:37Speaker 1: I get what you mean, But it just felt crazy
- 47:40Speaker 1: to me that the emotional turning point of the film,
- 47:44Speaker 1: the thing that convinces Jean Gray to not kill you know,
- 47:50Speaker 1: millions of people is essentially an imagined conversation in someone's
- 47:58Speaker 1: mind with a woman she's never met and has no
- 48:01Speaker 1: emotional ties to that that's just bad writing to me.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I to be I'll be honest, and I'm
- 48:10Speaker 2: just gonna say it. I feel that way about every
- 48:13Speaker 2: single intermovie relationship, Like when when every single hero crossover
- 48:18Speaker 2: relationship across these movies, like I'm always like I'm sorry,
- 48:21Speaker 2: like Iron Man in Spider Man's relationship that never touched
- 48:25Speaker 2: me emotionally, like I didn't really care about their relationship,
- 48:29Speaker 2: didn't touch you sexually? I yes, a little bit. I
- 48:33Speaker 2: am someone who I'm trying to not be a spoils
- 48:36Speaker 2: for about the MCU. When you watch these films, you
- 48:39Speaker 2: do have to watch them as a lover of comics,
- 48:42Speaker 2: and as a lover of comics, you must give your
- 48:45Speaker 2: give way to the fact that all these crossovers and
- 48:49Speaker 2: all of the kind of the episodic nature of these movies,
- 48:52Speaker 2: as yes, this is just a chapter in a multi
- 48:55Speaker 2: cinematic kind of like story, and you have to see
- 48:58Speaker 2: all of them in order to enjoy way the full picture.
- 49:01Speaker 2: I give myself way to that. I'm not complaining about that.
- 49:03Speaker 2: I kind of see the movies as they are. But
- 49:06Speaker 2: because Spider Man is my favorite film, I really miss
- 49:09Speaker 2: what the vintage Spider Man's feel like because watching all
- 49:12Speaker 2: this Spider Man, the Tom Holland Spider Man specifically, I
- 49:15Speaker 2: love these films. However, I go into these movies and
- 49:19Speaker 2: I have to decide how I'm going to enjoy the movie.
- 49:22Speaker 2: Am I going to enjoy it as a blockbuster? Am
- 49:24Speaker 2: I going to enjoy it as a fan of Spider Man?
- 49:26Speaker 2: Am I going to enjoy it as an MCU fanatic,
- 49:29Speaker 2: which is a separate thing. Am I going to enjoy
- 49:31Speaker 2: it as a critic? I think I have to always
- 49:34Speaker 2: reconcile with that instead of just simply enjoying the movie.
- 49:37Speaker 2: And I do actually think that even though I didn't
- 49:39Speaker 2: dislike this film, as I said, it made me cry twice,
- 49:42Speaker 2: this movie, to me, was primarily set up like this.
- 49:46Speaker 2: It did it didn't. They kept saying this was the
- 49:48Speaker 2: quote unquote reset because Spider Man's memory is a race.
- 49:51Speaker 2: It did not feel like a reset to me at all.
- 49:53Speaker 2: It actually felt like a day new Mount, like they
- 49:55Speaker 2: were taking old Yeller out to the back to shoot
- 49:58Speaker 2: him in the thing. I also felt like that I
- 50:01Speaker 2: really thought he was gonna end with him dying. It
- 50:03Speaker 2: felt like they were like teeing up old Boy to
- 50:08Speaker 2: be to retire. But but I don't think that's what
- 50:12Speaker 2: they're doing that. I think that's what it felt like.
- 50:14Speaker 2: I don't think that was the intent, because I think
- 50:16Speaker 2: the MC really sees Spider Man as the beating heart
- 50:20Speaker 2: of Marvel. Like Spider Man and the micro nature of
- 50:24Speaker 2: who he is as a superhero and what he means
- 50:27Speaker 2: in the context of all these other heroes above. His
- 50:30Speaker 2: pay grade to me is like so critical to like
- 50:35Speaker 2: the ethos of Marvel and how Spider Man is implicated
- 50:41Speaker 2: into the universe. And so I've never cared about Spider
- 50:45Speaker 2: Man like that. I know. I think you're kind of
- 50:49Speaker 2: like an outlier on that. I think Spider Man is
- 50:50Speaker 2: most people's favorite. Sorry, I just his powers aren't cool
- 50:54Speaker 2: to me, and he's a guy, So I just, I
- 50:56Speaker 2: so just, I'm just He's always been my favorite out
- 50:59Speaker 2: of end Marvel or DC superhero anything.
- 51:02Speaker 1: But I think what you're saying is very true, and
- 51:04Speaker 1: I actually would love to hear in the comments from
- 51:07Speaker 1: anyone who does see this film if you do end
- 51:10Speaker 1: up seeing this movie with no context, please let us
- 51:14Speaker 1: know what that experience is like, because I agree, like
- 51:17Speaker 1: you do have to show up with a lot of
- 51:19Speaker 1: prior knowledge to these movies, and not everyone has the time.
- 51:24Speaker 2: And so like it's like with Jean Gray, who is
- 51:27Speaker 2: like unambiguously perfect in this film, it's like so exciting,
- 51:32Speaker 2: but for the last third of the film to really
- 51:35Speaker 2: be Jean Gray's story, I don't know if that if
- 51:39Speaker 2: the balance was really struck for me, I don't know
- 51:41Speaker 2: if that was really justified in this film as a
- 51:44Speaker 2: Spider Man film, because Jean Gray isn't the villain. Like
- 51:47Speaker 2: in Spider Man two, doc oc gets like a really
- 51:51Speaker 2: robust character portrait that I think is so delicious and juicy,
- 51:55Speaker 2: and you could argue that Jean Gray is getting a
- 51:57Speaker 2: version of the same thing, but I just there's no
- 52:00Speaker 2: comparison because Jean Gray isn't the villain. She will have
- 52:04Speaker 2: a life outside of this film and a long, long
- 52:07Speaker 2: road ahead of us as our character develops, And so
- 52:10Speaker 2: I'm just kind of like, oh, it didn't feel like
- 52:12Speaker 2: a Spider Man movie to me. It just felt like
- 52:15Speaker 2: an issue of a comic book that I picked up
- 52:17Speaker 2: and that is also fine. I can accept it as that, but.
- 52:21Speaker 1: But you know what else it is. It's trans allegory.
- 52:24Speaker 1: Everyone only have three minutes to discuss it.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Can I say, Spider Man is taking hormone blockers. Let
- 52:31Speaker 2: me let me, let me, let me paint out the
- 52:33Speaker 2: trans algray, let me make it make sense and take
- 52:35Speaker 2: it very seriously. I was listening to some fucking nerd
- 52:38Speaker 2: podcast that was like, it's about choosing the right ssriyes.
- 52:41Speaker 2: I was like, shut out yourself, shut up. They literally
- 52:45Speaker 2: said hormones. The if Spider Man is taking these hormone
- 52:50Speaker 2: blockers and the growth of his hormone which is not
- 52:53Speaker 2: related to puberty because he's in his thirties, but it's
- 52:56Speaker 2: kind of a Spider Hero puberty. The growth of his
- 53:00Speaker 2: hormones is something that he doesn't want to embrace because
- 53:03Speaker 2: he sees it as monstrous. But that monstrosity, that specialness,
- 53:07Speaker 2: is meant to be akin to the mutant race, to
- 53:11Speaker 2: a race of mutants that has been ostracized from society.
- 53:13Speaker 2: But he himself passes as a hero. He himself is
- 53:17Speaker 2: kind of has already been accepted by society. He doesn't
- 53:20Speaker 2: want to be rejected. On the basis of his imminent monstrosity. Ultimately,
- 53:26Speaker 2: he decides that he doesn't need the hormone blocker, which
- 53:30Speaker 2: means Spider Man is a non medically transitioning treny like
- 53:37Speaker 2: Spider Man realizes that instead of inhibiting the facial hair
- 53:43Speaker 2: and the muscles that are coming through, She says, Oh,
- 53:46Speaker 2: I can be afraid of it. I can run away
- 53:48Speaker 2: from it, or I can embrace it. I can be
- 53:51Speaker 2: in control of it. I can manicure it. I can
- 53:53Speaker 2: embrace it, learn to work with it, and accept the
- 53:57Speaker 2: totality of her identity. And she says famously, I am both.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Remember yeah, girl, When she said I am both, I
- 54:07Speaker 2: was like, girl, I know what this movie's about.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Okay, Like, but I thought I thought, actually, like you said, Jean,
- 54:16Speaker 1: I know, we only have two minutes left, but you're
- 54:19Speaker 1: maybe we'll we'll discuss more of this later. But I
- 54:22Speaker 1: actually think Jean Gray's story in the final third of
- 54:26Speaker 1: this movie does parallel really nicely with Spider Man's journey.
- 54:30Speaker 2: So well perfect.
- 54:31Speaker 1: I like, you know when Jean Like, she has such
- 54:34Speaker 1: a banger of a line when she says to the
- 54:36Speaker 1: guy from Severance, the only hands that will wield this
- 54:39Speaker 1: power are mine, Like it is very much about like
- 54:43Speaker 1: not letting what society has deemed an acceptable way for
- 54:47Speaker 1: your body to be to stop you from having the
- 54:51Speaker 1: body that you want to And like, yes, I'm conflating
- 54:55Speaker 1: body with superpowers, but like those are the same thing.
- 54:59Speaker 2: And the stories trans allegory in that too.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Yeah, so Jean Gray and Spider Man are a tea
- 55:05Speaker 1: for tea couple, or at least they're tea for tea friends.
- 55:08Speaker 1: They should come to doll Invasion for sure. Virgins, do
- 55:11Speaker 1: you care about X Men?
- 55:12Speaker 2: Because if you do, like we could do a whole
- 55:13Speaker 2: other episode just talking about this. We've rose and I
- 55:17Speaker 2: have discussed a bonus episode on X Men. Get in
- 55:21Speaker 2: the comments and let us know if you actually care
- 55:22Speaker 2: about this or we should just save it for our
- 55:24Speaker 2: own group chat. But we unfortunately have a heart out today.
- 55:28Speaker 2: I honestly could have talked about Spider Man for another
- 55:30Speaker 2: fifteen twenty minutes, but I think it's good that we.
- 55:32Speaker 1: Can't because we did just do a whole We did
- 55:35Speaker 1: just do a whole episode on one movie, so I
- 55:37Speaker 1: think it's fine to keep this discussion a little shorter.
- 55:40Speaker 2: I like the whole movie episodes. But I will just
- 55:42Speaker 2: say like, I don't think even though I love Spider Man,
- 55:45Speaker 2: I don't think Marvel is important. I don't like care
- 55:47Speaker 2: I don't like talking about it that much.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Now this is something to tweet about and chat for
- 55:52Speaker 1: a little bit on a podcast. We don't need to
- 55:54Speaker 1: do an intense.
- 55:55Speaker 2: Deep dive, but I would. I could do a deep
- 55:57Speaker 2: dive on X Men.
- 55:58Speaker 1: So yes, let us know what you thought of Spider Man, Brand,
- 56:03Speaker 1: New Day, Avatar, and The Last Airbender. What made you
