- 0:00Happy Monday.
- 0:01A couple days ago, I found myself sitting on the sofa, tissue box nearby, feeling pretty powerless.
- 0:09I really wanted to help my daughter through something that she was facing, but I really didn't know how.
- 0:14And I think that instinct is pretty normal when you care deeply about someone, whether you're a mom or not.
- 0:21I know for me, my instinct in those moments is to fix it, to, you know, find the answer or just somehow make the situation better.
- 0:33And as I sat there not knowing what to do, a Facebook notification popped up on my phone.
- 0:40A memory had come up.
- 0:41And in that memory was a story about a hummingbird during a forest fire.
- 0:47She was flying back and forth, carrying tiny drops of water in her beak from a nearby river, trying to put it out.
- 0:54And of course, it wasn't enough.
- 0:57There was no way that bird was going to stop a fire like that.
- 1:00But she kept going anyway.
- 1:02And there was a part of the story that really landed for me in that moment.
- 1:07A jaguar asked the hummingbird what she was doing.
- 1:10And after she explained that she was carrying water back and forth, the jaguar laughed at her and said,"Are you crazy?
- 1:17Do you really think that you can put out that big fire on your own with your very small beak?" And that was when she explained that the forest was her home and she cared about it.
- 1:28And she went on to say,"I know I can't put out the fire, but I must do my part." And in the story, something bigger eventually steps in.
- 1:38The spirit of the forest saw the heart of the hummingbird and brought a huge rainstorm.
- 1:44So in the end, the fire was extinguished, but not because the hummingbird could do it alone, but because she was never really meant to.
- 1:53And I have to tell you, I really appreciated the message of that story in that moment, that maybe not everything is mine to fix.
- 2:03Not everything is mine to solve, even the things I care deeply about.
- 2:10Sometimes my role is just to show up, to listen, to be steady, even when it feels like it's not enough.
- 2:19And maybe that is the challenge, to keep showing up, to keep the faith, to trust that our part can matter even when we can't see how it could possibly be enough.
- 2:30So if you're in a moment like that right now where you wish you had the answers or that you could make something better for someone you care about, maybe your job isn't to put out the fire.
- 2:42Maybe it's just to bring your drop of water and to trust that the rest isn't yours to carry alone.
