- 0:25Hello, friends, it's Sean. Here it is the 24th of December.
- 0:31Yes, it's Christmas Eve. Oh, I hope that this is a very
- 0:36special time of year for you, and I hope that today is not too
- 0:40mad as you prepare for the celebration and festivities of
- 0:44the day to come. Or maybe your Christmas looks a
- 0:47bit different this year and you're celebrating on a
- 0:49different day, in which case today might be a bit more
- 0:51relaxed for you. But wherever it is, whatever it
- 0:54is, however it is, Merry Christmas Eve, friends, so
- 0:58lovely that you have brought me into your day so that you and I
- 1:02can sit down, pause for a moment, and hear God's word
- 1:06about this incredible story. And we are going to pick up
- 1:09today where we left off yesterday with Mary just
- 1:13arriving at her cousin Elizabeth's home as Mary gets
- 1:18her mind around this incredible thing that's happening and her
- 1:22cousin Elizabeth has her baby John.
- 1:25So let's hear the next part of the story as we read together
- 1:29the second half verses 46 to 80 of John chapter 1.
- 1:44Mary responded, Oh how my soul praises the Lord, how my spirit
- 1:52rejoices in God my Saviour. For he took notice of his lowly
- 1:57servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me
- 2:02blessed. For the mighty One is holy, and
- 2:07He has done great things for me. He shows mercy from generation
- 2:13to generation to all who fear Him.
- 2:17His mighty arm has done tremendous things.
- 2:21He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.
- 2:24He has brought down Princess from their Thrones and exalted
- 2:28the humble. He has filled the hungry with
- 2:31good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.
- 2:36He has helped His servant Israel and remembered to be merciful,
- 2:41for He made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his
- 2:47children forever. Mary stayed with Elizabeth about
- 2:513 months and then went back to her own home.
- 2:56When it was time for Elizabeth's baby to be born, she gave birth
- 2:59to a son, and when her neighbours and relatives heard
- 3:03how the Lord had been very merciful to her, everyone
- 3:07rejoiced with her. When the baby was eight days
- 3:10old, they all came for the circumcision ceremony.
- 3:14They wanted to name him Zechariah after his father, but
- 3:18Elizabeth said no, his name is John.
- 3:23What? They exclaimed.
- 3:26There is no one in all your family by that name.
- 3:30So they used gestures to ask the baby's father what he wanted to
- 3:33name him. He motioned for a writing tablet
- 3:37and to everyone's surprise, he wrote his name is John.
- 3:44Instantly Zechariah could speak again and he began praising God
- 3:50or fell upon the whole neighbourhood and the news of
- 3:53what had happened spread throughout the Judean Hills.
- 3:56Everyone who heard about it reflected on these events and
- 4:00asked, what will this child turn out to be?
- 4:05For the hand of the Lord was surely upon him in a special
- 4:08way. Then his father Zechariah was
- 4:11filled with the Holy Spirit and gave this prophecy.
- 4:15Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has visited
- 4:20and redeemed His people. He has sent us a mighty Saviour
- 4:25from the royal line of His servant David, just as He
- 4:29promised through His holy prophets long ago.
- 4:33Now we will be saved from our enemies and from all who hate
- 4:37us. He has been merciful to our
- 4:40ancestors by remembering His sacred covenant, the covenant He
- 4:45swore with an oath to our ancestor Abraham.
- 4:49We have been rescued from our enemies so we can serve God
- 4:54without fear in holiness and righteousness for as long as we
- 4:58live. And you, my little son, will be
- 5:02called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare
- 5:07the way for the Lord. You will tell his people how to
- 5:11find salvation through forgiveness of their sins.
- 5:15Because of God's tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is
- 5:20about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in
- 5:24darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the
- 5:29path of peace. John grew up and became strong
- 5:35in spirit, and he lived in the wilderness until he began his
- 5:40public ministry to Israel. Oh Father, this is your plan,
- 5:54long organised and long anticipated.
- 5:59Your prophets wrote about this and shared your plans, but we
- 6:04didn't understand. And through all those years, you
- 6:09put things in place so that you could send your son Jesus to be
- 6:14born to live a perfect life and to die and be raised from death
- 6:21so that he could be the first resurrected.
- 6:24That deposit that made the way for all of us to come to you.
- 6:30Oh, we thank you, Father, for this story.
- 6:32We thank you for sending Jesus, and we just praise you for your
- 6:38goodness and mercy to us, your children.
- 6:42And so today, this fervent expectation and anticipation
- 6:46grows in us for the coming celebration tomorrow of what
- 6:51you've done. So we pray all of this in the
- 6:54incredible saving name of Jesus, Amen.
