- 0:04Speaker 1: Vine by Andrew Murray. This Liebervok's recording is in the

- 0:16Speaker 1: Greater love hath no man than this that a man
- 0:19Speaker 1: laid down his life for his friends. John fifteen thirteen.
- 0:25Speaker 1: In the three following verses, our Lord speaks of his
- 0:27Speaker 1: relation to his disciples under a new aspect, that of friendship.
- 0:33Speaker 1: He points us to the love in which it, on
- 0:35Speaker 1: his side, has its origin verse thirteen, to the obedience
- 0:40Speaker 1: on our part by which it is maintained verse fourteen,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and then to the holy intimacy to which it leads
- 0:47Speaker 1: verse fifteen. Our relation to Christ is one of love.
- 0:52Speaker 1: In speaking of this previously, he showed us what his
- 0:55Speaker 1: love was, in its heavenly glory, the same love which
- 1:00Speaker 1: the Father had loved him. Here we have it, in
- 1:03Speaker 1: its earthly manifestation, lay down his life for us. Greater
- 1:10Speaker 1: love hath no man than this, that a man laid
- 1:13Speaker 1: down his life for his friends. Christ does, indeed, long
- 1:18Speaker 1: to have us know that the secret root and strength
- 1:21Speaker 1: of all he is and does for us as divine
- 1:25Speaker 1: is love. As we learn to believe this, we shall
- 1:29Speaker 1: feel that here is something which we not only need
- 1:33Speaker 1: to think and know about, but a living power, a
- 1:37Speaker 1: divine life, which we need to receive within us. Christ
- 1:41Speaker 1: and his Love are inseparable. They are identical. God is
- 1:46Speaker 1: love and Christ is love. God and Christ and the
- 1:50Speaker 1: Divine Love can only be known by having them, by
- 1:54Speaker 1: their life and power working within us. This is eternal
- 1:58Speaker 1: life that they know, Oh thee. There is no knowing God,
- 2:03Speaker 1: but having the life, the life working in us alone
- 2:07Speaker 1: gives us the knowledge and even so the love. If
- 2:10Speaker 1: we know it, we shall drink of its living stream.
- 2:14Speaker 1: We must have it shed forth by the Holy Spirit
- 2:17Speaker 1: in us. Greater love hath no man than this, that
- 2:22Speaker 1: a man give his life for his friends. The life
- 2:26Speaker 1: is the most precious thing a man has. The life
- 2:29Speaker 1: is all he is, The life is himself. This is
- 2:33Speaker 1: the highest measure of love. When a man gives his life,
- 2:38Speaker 1: he holds nothing back. He gives all he has and
- 2:42Speaker 1: is it is this our Lord Jesus wants to make
- 2:45Speaker 1: clearer to us concerning his mystery of the Vine. With
- 2:49Speaker 1: all he has, he has placed himself at our disposal.
- 2:54Speaker 1: He wants us to count him our very own. He
- 2:58Speaker 1: wants to be wholly our possession, that we may be
- 3:01Speaker 1: wholly his possession. He gave his life for us in death,
- 3:06Speaker 1: not merely as a passing act that, when accomplished, was
- 3:10Speaker 1: done with no but as making himself ours for eternity,
- 3:16Speaker 1: life for life. He gave his life for us to possess,
- 3:20Speaker 1: that we might give our life for him to possess.
- 3:23Speaker 1: This is what is taught by the parable of the
- 3:26Speaker 1: vine and the branch, in their wonderful identification, in their
- 3:30Speaker 1: perfect union. It is as we know something of this,
- 3:34Speaker 1: not by reason or imagination, but deep down in the
- 3:38Speaker 1: heart and life, that we shall begin to see what
- 3:42Speaker 1: ought to be our life as branches of the heavenly vine.
- 3:46Speaker 1: He gave himself to death. He lost himself that we
- 3:50Speaker 1: might find life in him. This is the true Vine,
- 3:55Speaker 1: who only lives to live in us. This is the
- 3:58Speaker 1: beginning and the root of that holy friendship to which
- 4:02Speaker 1: Christ invites us. Great is the mystery of Godliness. Let
- 4:07Speaker 1: us confess our ignorance and unbelief. Let us cease from
- 4:11Speaker 1: our own understanding and our own efforts to master it.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Let us wait for the Holy Spirit, who dwells within us,
- 4:18Speaker 1: to reveal it. Let us trust his infinite love, which
- 4:22Speaker 1: gave its life for us, to take possession, and rejoice
- 4:27Speaker 1: in making us holy its own, his life for his friends.
- 4:32Speaker 1: How wonderful the lessons of the vine giving its very
- 4:36Speaker 1: life to its branches, and Jesus gave his life for
- 4:39Speaker 1: his friends, and that love gives itself to them and
- 4:43Speaker 1: in them, my heavenly vine. O teach me how holy
- 4:48Speaker 1: thou longest to live in me? End of Chapter twenty
