Transcript
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Netflix's Naria trailer, magic or a big mistake?
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, it's Gilbert K here.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to my channel.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Netflix brought back Narnia, and somehow the biggest battle is already happening in the comments.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: We're supposed to enter a magical world instead of enter a group chat where nobody has slept.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Some fans are excited, some think the new look feels wrong.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm sitting here thinking, can we at least let the lion finish loading before we declare childhood emergency?
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: This is Gilbert K.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Take.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Today we're talking about Greta Gerwig's Narnia, the magician's nephew, and whether this new adventure can capture the magic people remember.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Because bringing back Narnia is a big job.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: You're adapting a book, you're also dealing with somebody's childhood, their favorite movie, and the cousin, Orios' 17 Reasons You're Wrong.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: That cousin has already made a spreadsheet.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: First, a quick clarification: the magician's nephew take us back to Narnia's beginnings.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: This is an origin story based on C.S.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Lewis' book rather than another version of the same wardrobe adventure.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Hollywood loves an origin story, everybody needs one now.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: The hero, the villain, the sidekick.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Eventually, we're getting the wardrobe before the hinges.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Before it held coats, it held secrets.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Coming soon, three hours, bring a carpenter.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: But the spectacular beginning gives the film something interesting to work with.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: The creation of a magical world.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: And that's a lovely idea.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: We spend so many big movies watching somebody blow a word up.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Seeing one come to life could be a welcome change.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: A new word, great.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Does it have affordable parking?
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Can I get a family doctor there?
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Forget the magic ring.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Show me the rental agreement.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: The look and the argument.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: The early online discussion is split.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Some viewers like the bold colors and fantasy imagery.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Others say that style doesn't match the Narnia they imagined.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Those are examples of reactions, by the way.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: We haven't taken a global vote, the internet can make six angry people around like a royal commission.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: And I understand the concern.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: When a story matters to you, its atmosphere matters too.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: You can change the furniture and still make a place feel like home.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: But if I walk into my childhood home and everything looks like a nightclub, I'm going to have questions.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Why is the kitchen glowing purple?
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Why does the fridge have a fog machine?
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And why is grandma selling VIP wristbands?
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: At the same time, bright colors don't automatically mean a movie has lost its heart.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: This is fantasy.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: I'm willing to accept a word that looks different from my Tuesday afternoon.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: My Tuesday afternoon has laundry and a password reset.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Give me something else.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: My concern is whether the beauty will connect to the story.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Will those big images help us feel wonder, fear, and excitement?
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Or will I spend the whole movie admiring the background while forgetting why anyone is there?
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Because I can admire background on my laptop, it comes free with the computer.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: I want characters I care about.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: If the kids are in danger, I want to feel it.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: If they discover something amazing, I want the discovery to land.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: The special effects can invite me into Narnia.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: The story has to give me a reason to stay.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Greta Gerwig and the expectations.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Greta Gerwig wrote and directed this adaptation, and coming from Barbie, she brings a lot of intention with her, which is helpful until everyone decides you're personally responsible for their happiness.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Imagine getting the job offer.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Congratulations, Greta.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: You get to create a magical universe.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Wonderful.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Also, millions of people already have a version in their heads.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And all those versions are different.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: That isn't a directing assignment, that's Thanksgiving dinner with a film budget.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Here's where I stand.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: I want a filmmaker to bring ideas.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Also, I want those ideas to serve the story people fell in love with.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: A fresh approach should help us discover something.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: It shouldn't feel like somebody changed everything because they found a new button in the editing software.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: But we need the full movie to judge that properly.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: A trailer introduces the pitch, it doesn't show us every performance, every quiet moment, or how the whole thing holds together.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: You wouldn't judge a restaurant by watching someone carry a plate past the window.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Although, if that plate costs$40 and contains one carrot, I do deserve the right to ask questions.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: The cast and the music.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: The cast includes Danny Craig, Emma McKee, Carrie Mulligan, and Meryl Streep, alongside newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: That's quite a lineup.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: If I'm one of the young actors, I'm trying to remember my lines while realizing my co-workers have enough awards to require their own moving truck.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Meryl Streep voices Aslan, but AP reports that Aslan doesn't speak in this first trailer.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: So I'm saving any judgment of the voice performance until there's actually performance to hear.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Imagine reviewing a singer before they open their mouth.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Terrible high notes, sir.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: That's the sound check.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: The trailer uses Led Zepson's stairway to heaven.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: AP reports that Gerwig met with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page to secure permission.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: That's a serious music meeting.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: My music.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Negotiations usually involve turning down the volume because the neighbor is banging on the wall.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Some viewers have questioned the song choice.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Fair enough.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Trailer music shapes what we expect, but a rock song and an ad don't tell us how every scene in the finished film will sound.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, every action movie would be two hours of one dramatic drum and somebody whispering the release date.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Netflix sends us to the theater.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Here's the other big part of the story.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Netflix confirms a theatrical release on February 12, 2027, before the film arrives on Netflix on April 2nd.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: So yes, a Netflix film is asking us to leave the house first.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: That's a big request from a company that knows I'm already in slippers.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Are you still watching?
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Wonderful.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Now put on pants.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: You've changed Netflix.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: But for an adventure built around a magical word, I can see the appeal of the big screen.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: There's something lovely about discovering that word with an audience.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: The shared gasp, the laughter, that moment when everybody gets quiet.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And the person next to you opening a bag of candy like they're demolished a shed.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Sir, the lion has created a universe in less time than it's taken you to find a gummy bear.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: My take.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: So magic or a big mistake.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: My take is that the idea gives me a reason to be interested.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Narnia's beginning is a strong starting point, and I'm open to a different visual approach.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: My question is whether all that spectacle will carry on an emotional story.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I want wonder.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: I want characters with something to lose.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: I want the film to remember that a huge world can still contain small human moments.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Give me a reason to care, and I'll follow you through a portal.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Without that, I'm just watching an expensive screensaver with a lion.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And I already have a cat who walks across my laptop, very immersive, terrible reviews.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: For the longtime fans, I understand protecting something you love.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: For the curious newcomers, I understand wanting something fresh.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Both groups deserve a good movie.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: We'll find out what Gerwig delivers when we can see the whole thing.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: For now, there's enough here for a proper conversation.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: And apparently enough for several arguments before breakfast.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Does this new Narnia feel magical to you?
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Or does the style take you out of it?
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Tell me what specifically works or doesn't work.
