- Canon Stogner: Welcome back to another episode of the Saturday Slate. It is Labor Day. We are here on Monday live with co-host Andrew Wright and our weekly guest here recapping week one of college football, Will Morris. Will, it's nice to have you. we got a lot to talk about. I think for week one, I wasn't really expecting a lot of good games, but it turned out to be an incredible week one, especially, you know, being before we get into conference play. And I think week one showed us that really anybody could win it this year. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: although the quality of opponents a lot of the top teams play wasn't very that that good. But a lot of teams looked like they could potentially win it. but kind of like how we started last episode, let's go ahead and we're gonna start with South Carolina because we're obviously South Carolina fans and most of our listeners are South Carolina fans, so We're gonna start with South Carolina. they ended up beating Kent State fifty seven to nothing. in a very hot, hot day. It was the hottest game at Willie B. I'm sure everybody's seen it, so I'm just not trying to beat a dead horse. But I thought they looked really good. to be honest with you, it kinda started off and I was tell I was telling my buddy Avery, I was like, if they can't block Kent State, it's gonna be a long year. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: And that those first two drives, I was like, boy. But Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: it ended up I mean, they rushed for over two hundred yards, or maybe three hundred yards, excuse me. or they had two hundred and eighty rushing yards, so almost three hundred, but they really dominated Kent State and it was so good to see Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: like them not being a close game against a team that's not in their conference in the game they should have won. they did cover the spread. I thought Lenoris looked really good. under Kendall Browse. He looked confident he knew where to go with the ball. and he was just he wasn't shaky back there. He wasn't looking to run the whole time. and I thought the way that they used Nick Harbor and just getting the ball to him immediately instead Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: of trying these deep balls to use the speed, they just gave the ball to him and let his speed take over from there. I thought that was something we haven't seen yet with any of the previous offensive coordinators. And it looked really good. and then their defense obviously pitched a shutout. I didn't think Kent State's quarterback was that bad either. I mean, he was getting Andrew Wright: Mm-mm. Canon Stogner: the ball out quick. they only had one sack. They had seven or eight hurries, QB hurries, but they only he only gave up one sack. but the defense was really I mean, they did what we I think we all kind of thought they would do or should do playing in a team like that. but I think my biggest thing that I enjoyed seeing was I've always told people I'd rather have a running back that is just kind of that bruiser that's just going to lower his head and get three or four yards because once you get into the second half, you start to wear teams down with that running game. And those three or four yards turn into six, seven, eight yards a carry. And they did exactly that. I mean, they averaged nine yards a play. and I saw someone post on Twitter, all seven of the running backs on the roster weigh over two hundred pounds. And I think having that is massive because you got they have a bunch of different backs. They all are like the same running back style. they just lower their head, lower their shoulder and fall forward. And I think that's the type of running back South Carolina needs. So that's what they had two years ago with Rocket Sanders. And I mean that's the best year they've had in several years. So what'd you think? Andrew Wright: Just for me, kind of something you said, like just so good to see them play that level of football against a non-conference opponent team that they're really supposed to beat up on in week one. Haven't seen that really since Georgia State in 2021. So just really, really nice to kind of see that get that out of the way. Like you said, lovely they did with Harbor. I saw a guy like you on Twitter file plays into their drives. Like, Hey, it is a good idea to get the ball out in space to the six five track star. Like maybe that is something we should have seen in the past. And then just the offense was incredible. All the metrics numbers surpassed the Tennessee game in 2022. And I know that it's an inferior opponent against Kent State, but they haven't done that. So just very, very good to see that. Suthers look really good. The running game was my biggest takeaway. You average seven yards to carry and run for the year most yards in two years. Like you said, almost 300. Very, very encouraging. So I'm kind of very looking forward to seeing kind of what, that blossoms not so much next week against another inferior opponent, but kind of when that CC play begins in a couple of weeks. Will Morris: Yeah, I mean similar similar takeaways. I mean, it's obviously there's it's hard to poke holes in the performance from South Carolina. I the defense suffocated, the offense scored. After that first drive, they basically scored a touchdown. What was it, like the next eight drives or whatever it was? Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Will Morris: I think the biggest thing for a South Carolina fan, I think there's two things. One is when you're watching an SEC team play inferior competition, really what you want to watch is you want to watch the lines of scrimmage. Can my offensive line actually dominate their defensive line and vice versa. And I think they did that. I know the first drive was a little bit shaky, but I think once they figured that out, they look good. The second thing was I think the wide receiver room really surprised me. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Will Morris: especially given the injuries to Sellers and the kid that transferred in from Oklahoma. Like I thought the Canon Stogner: Gibson. Gibson, yeah. Will Morris: wide I mean, I didn't know obviously you have Harbour, you got Mazio Bennett, but like Maisio Bennett kinda fell off last year. He had a good freshman year. So I was really, really pleased with the depth that the wide receiver room showed. what was the Donovan Murph? He showed Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Will Morris: up. I mean, he looked Canon Stogner: Yeah. Will Morris: good. he's a what a true sophomore, I think. Yeah, yeah. So he looked really Canon Stogner: Yeah, he's supposed to be a freshman though. He gra graduated early. Will Morris: good. so I think the the wide receiver room and and I think the lines of scrimmage, I think that was the the two biggest things that I took away. I think the defense did what we were hoping they did and even s you know, even exceeded expectation. I mean they didn't they didn't get the ball across the forty and maybe one time. But for a long time in the game, they I mean they just couldn't move the ball. They maybe get one first Andrew Wright: Thank Will Morris: down, maybe two, but they just they couldn't string together first down. So yeah, overall couldn't be more pleased. Canon Stogner: Yeah, I th the one thing my favorite thing that I enjoyed seeing was coming from Mike Shula, and you know, Satterfield, Bobo, all these previous offense Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: coordinators they had, it was very cool to see that like they would just call they would have a formation that they would send out for the first play of a drive. And then out of that formation, they were obviously well prepared and all the credit is to Kill Kendall Braz for this, but they were well prepared and I mean they would snap the ball a couple of times before the play clock even got to thirty seconds. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: And I feel like we're used to seeing like them snapping the ball with two or three seconds left every play. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Canon Stogner: and I don't think their offense is not built for that, especially with a guy like Lenores who can you know, puts the defense on their heels and sets them back. so yeah, I mean it was very pleased. It's hard to take away from that. they do have Towson this week, so I think it should be another one of those games. But after that, I don't want to look ahead, but that Mississippi State game's massive because Camaro Andrew Wright: Massive. Canon Stogner: Kamario Taylor is a baller. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: but we're focused on Talison right now, and I don't want to re-overact, Andrew Wright: That's right. Canon Stogner: but South Carolina looks like they're gonna win national championship. but I'm not I'm I don't I'm not gonna overreact. Will Morris: Yeah, don't do that. Canon Stogner: No, I'm playing. my last my last takeaway on South Carolina was I was interested to see I've seen a bunch of depth charts and you know, Shed Surratt ended up not starting. He was the best tackle last year by far, best offense lineman by far last year. He ended up not starting. He did play a good bit. But my biggest surprise was Darius Gray started at left tackle. And the reason I say that is once Jacarius Peake comes back, and it looks like he may even come back this week, I'd be surprised if he does just 'cause it is against Towson. He'll definitely be back from Mississippi State. I'll call that now. But I was surprised to see Gray start at left tackle because once Jacarius Peak does come back, he will be at left tackle. So are they going to put Darius Gray on the opposite end and right tackle? Or are they going to move him to guard? I know Beamer did say he could start at any position for them right now. but I think giving getting him the snaps to the position he's going to play whenever Peak comes back is important. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: because I mean I never played offens line. I I'm a hundred and sixty pounds. I was a hundred and twenty pounds soaking wet when I was playing. But I mean, it's different footwork. I mean, it's opposite footwork of what you're doing on the left side than it is the right side. So that would be interesting to see. all right, enough of South Carolina. Go ahead. Will Morris: I was well, I was gonna say one one more thing on that is you know, I talked about how the lines look good. Arguably our two best football players, obviously Dylan Stewart and then Jacarius Peake, they didn't play and the lines still look good. So I think you take Canon Stogner: Yeah. Yeah. Will Morris: that as even more of a positive. because again, that's not just like the two best like offensive defense line. They might just be our two best football players, period. And they weren't playing and we still look good. So I thought, you know, pleased with that, obviously. Canon Stogner: Yeah, yeah. A hundred percent. It was it was funny. I know we we always joke about Jake Bentley's first career snap. It was he ran a read option, he handed it he handed it off and like carried out the fate and tripped over his own feet in his first Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: game. Julian Walker's first play of his career, Kent State threw like a screen pass or something and he hit the quarterback like three seconds after he released Andrew Wright: Yes, so late. Canon Stogner: it and got a penalty. So I was like, right, well, that's great teach tape for him. Like, cause he's probably gonna hear about it. I Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: mean, it was a little bit of a soft call. I they're playing football, he pushed them, but it was late. so you can't do that in those, you can't do that in the SEC game. So I Andrew Wright: Nuh-uh. Canon Stogner: was kind of glad he got out that got that out the way. all right, well, let's go ahead and jump into the biggest game of the weekend. I think a lot of us expected it. I did say here on this podcast that and I am talking about the LSU Clemson game. I did say here on this podcast that I would not be surprised if it's a close game as long as Clemson can steal the momentum early. And on the second play of the game, they get an interception. And honestly, I'll be honest with you, when I saw this interception, I'm like, no. This Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: this could be bad. this Clemson team's back. They had a down year last year and they're back. Boy did I have a roller coaster of emotions on them. and I'm not Like you can argue the obvious that LSU's obviously loaded. It was their first game of the season. They have all these expectations and hype because of Lane Kiffin, but they did not look like a team that was distracted by anything going on. And honestly, I Andrew Wright: Mm-mm. No. Canon Stogner: think you could you you could like see it in like in per or you could really see it that they had obviously not cared as much about the NFL thing as the fans and like Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: people in the media have. They I mean Lank Iffen was making jokes about it. I mean, they were just laughing about everything and dominated. Clearly didn't need them in this game. Andrew Wright: Uh-uh. Canon Stogner: so they ended up winning what the final score was 51 to 10. Andrew Wright: 15-1 to 10, yeah. Canon Stogner: And Clemson scored like two minutes left with the rushing touchdown against the backups. but one thing I keep seeing is Clemson fans are saying, Yeah, it's hard to compete against a fifty million dollar roster. Well, breaking news to you, you're either gonna compete and do the same thing. Or you're gonna stay with what you have been doing and you're gonna have another bad year because whether you like it or not, the transfer portal is what it is now in college football. And you can either adapt and use it like every other team is, or you can complain about it and be in your feelings about all these other teams being more expensive than you. And you can go show I mean, that was the most obvious game of a team using a transfer portal versus a team that's not Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: using a transfer portal. But I mean, I think it it's way outside of that. Clemson looked awful. They looked very underprepared. Their defense was awful. Did y'all see the video? Or it happened during the game. It was like right after LSU had like the pick six, and then Clemson goes three and out. And they showed the defensive coordinator for Clemson, Tom Allen. He's like trying to call a play and he's literally shaking. It's it's one of the funniest clips I've seen. Cause I mean, like he he genuinely looked like he was rattled. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: And I think that was a good visual for what the whole team was going through. But I've told a lot, I mean, obviously my wife and her family's Clemson fans, I told him, I said, as bad as that game was last night, it really doesn't matter. Cause we saw how bad the ACC was this week. I mean, obviously we have Miami, Louisville look really good. We'll see SMU tonight and Virginia looked very good last week, but they really have a pretty easy schedule outside of Miami. this year. So I'd say if they can just get to the ACC championship and maybe sneak one out against Miami. I mean, you're right back there in the playoff. But they do have a long way to go. They have a lot of people that have to step up and get more comfortable playing college football. but that was my takeaway. What do you have, Will? Will Morris: Yeah, I mean this was this was a splattering to use to use Josh Pate language. it was it was as bad as it could get. I mean I like seriously if you try to imagine worst case scenario if you're a Clemson fan, you go to bed Saturday night and you have a nightmare that night. You just wake up you just woke up and you just replayed that nightmare in real life. I mean they got outgained by five hundred yards on offense. They were one for thirteen on third down. They didn't have a rushing yard, they didn't have a positive rushing yard until the last drive. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Will Morris: so I mean this was this was as bad as it can go. And I I hear what you're saying about the ACC. and I think there are there there's kind of two ways that this could go. Me and me and Andrew are talking about this off the air. one way that this could go if you're a Clemson fan is LSU just is one of the best three teams in the country. Their defense is suffocating, their offense, Sam Levitt, they're just rocking and rolling. That could be kind of one way, and if that's the case, then you actually have a chance to still go maybe go make a run at the ACC championship. Get to Charlotte. The other way this goes is this LSU just kinda is what we thought they are. Like, right, top ten, top fifteen team, but they're not like in the echelon of Ohio State, what what we thought was Oregon and and Notre Dame. We'll we'll talk about that a little later. But they're but they're not at the top. And if that's the case and you're a Clemson fan, then you you start looking at that schedule. You got Miami, you have to go two Cal in a couple weeks. I mean, it's hard to start chalking up games where you look and you say, I feel comfortable counting that as a win. so we'll see. Again it's week one. it did go as bad as possible. So we we still have a lot to learn about every team, but if you're a Clemson fan, you have to be really, really uncomfortable looking at looking at the rest of the schedule, I think. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Andrew. Andrew Wright: My biggest thing, kind of guess, biggest takeaway for them is kind of my concern I had about them before the season started. I don't think they have a quarterback. I don't think they have a quarterback. And I know that's a very tough ask for Brazina's first career start on the road to be at LSU at night. That's a very tough place to go play, but he looked pitiful. And Canon Stogner: Uh-huh. Andrew Wright: me and Will, something else we were talking about, I thought it was insane that we saw Tate Riddle come in right in the first half and everybody was like, all right, like Brazina had his chance. He's done for the night. They will get him out of there. Like don't embarrass yourself anymore. I thought it was like almost coaching malpractice. They put him back in the game. I just, don't understand that thinking like just, just get him out of there. Let's take play the second half. The game's over. Just let your kid play the game. Kind of see what he's got. And then you can kind of go back to the drawing board next week before you play Georgia Southern, but that they don't have a quarterback. Like you're gonna, you're gonna have to have one and like a lot of season left and they'll have, they have their get right game next week. And that'll be a good chance for both of those guys, one of them to kind of step up and take the reins. But as long as that team doesn't have a quarterback, they're not gonna win anything. It doesn't matter how bad the ACC is, how low we view that, they're not gonna win anything without a quarterback. So they have to get that figured out quickly. Canon Stogner: Yeah, and listen, I could go on a tangent about Clemson and I might do it. I'm going to actually. There they're I mean, I'm just going if you look at her TikToks about Clemson, our comment section, and just hearing from a lot of people, I see a l I get a lot of Clemson stuff like on my feed and stuff, Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: on social media. All of them talk about how good their wide receiver core is. all of them talk about how good their defense is going to be under their defensive coordinator. They brought in Tom Allen. Last year, his first year was with Clemson. He came from Penn State. He was one of the top DCs in the country. They brought in Garrett Riley two years ago. One of the he was probably the top OC in the country. So they have Dabo Sweeney, who's a Hall of Famer, one of the best coaches in college football. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: And they have two coordinators, and this is last year. And they go seven and five. Okay, so this year they fired. Garrett Riley. They still obviously have Tom Allen at DC. They bring in Chad Morris. That was the worst offense I've ever seen. They Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: had no plan. They barely ran the ball at all in the first half, which I was shocked about. I don't care if the scores 10 to 3, 17 to 3, whatever the score was. The pass game was obviously not working. And that defensive Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: line and the linebackers and Blake Baker were feeding. I mean, they were Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: hot. There was nothing they could do wrong and they were fooling the crap out of Vasina. I thought it was coaching malpractice to put Vizina in that position. I mean, they immediately went to the passing game and were like, Let's see Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Canon Stogner: what you can do. And he obviously couldn't do much. So I think they shot their confidence. I mean, you he's been the QB one since spring practice of last year Andrew Wright: you Canon Stogner: and you bench him in the first half. So Andrew Wright: Yeah, crazy. Canon Stogner: I mean, there was a lot to say, but I tried to tell people I was like, they lost their top tackle, Blake Miller. They lost two or three offensive linemen. And all I've heard from these people are they are they're young and like their offensive line is very young and they looked young. They looked really bad. The offensive line was terrible. and my but my biggest question was. the defense looked awful. I mean, Sam Levitt was running all over them. They were mocking them. He wasn't sliding at all, which I do think Sam Levitt's gonna get hurt if he doesn't start Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: sliding. Because he was getting hit a couple of times, but I mean he was running wide open. He was carrying the ball like a loaf of bread a couple of times. That could cause Clemson or LSU, but yeah, I mean they dominated Clemson. And I think all you hear about with LSU is When you hear Lane Kiffin and you hear Charlie Weiss, all you think about is their offense, how good Lane Kiffin's offense is. But we sat on here, and I know all three of us know it, but we sat on here, we were like, their defense is really good, and they showed it. I think a lot of people Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: if they weren't already, they're very like scared of LSU now. I mean, they're gonna come Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: in and dominate most of the SEC at least. I do kind of want to get into a back to Dabo. he had he's had a lot of things to say about the transfer portal, and I think he's kind of starting to take back on it. But I'm gonna read some of his quotes that he's said since 2022. So these quotes go all the way all the way back to 2022 and as fresh as 2025. in 20 May 2024, he said, most of the guys in the portal aren't good enough to play for us. and he said that last year. He said, Most of the guys in the portal aren't good enough to play for us. That's just the reality of it. you think he's taken back on that quote now? Andrew Wright: Yeah, I hope for his sake. Will Morris: I would hope so. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Will Morris: I would hope so. Canon Stogner: I a hundred percent. in twenty twenty two he said, My transfer portal is right there in the locker room. So he's claiming that his guys on his team are what he needs. He fully believes in his scouting department and the guys that he's recruited out of high school, and he doesn't need to go to the transfer portal. And then another quote that he said, I have plenty, but the last one he's that I'm going to read, he said, We're not going to build our roster on transfers. And he's pretty much saying he's got he's built a culture at Clemson. He's obviously been successful the past previous years. but like I said at the beginning of the podcast, I mean, you have to change your strategy because you're not I mean, if you play like that all year, you're maybe even looking at a new job in next year Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: because the transfer portal is the new that's the new college football. And if you're not gonna adapt to it, then you're you're just gonna look terrible. Play it. I mean, what do you You have any thoughts on the transfer portal? Andrew Wright: I mean he can stick to that. He can stick with, we got our transfer portal here and we're not going to use it. That's fine if he wants to go seven and five every year, six and six. It's like, Canon Stogner: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Andrew Wright: I more power to him to like, don't change your mindset. Please don't. For us as soccer fans, please don't change your mindset. Please keep doing what you're doing. We love it. But yeah, I mean, he's got to change at some point if he wants to keep winning and wants to stay there. And they've started using it a little more than they have in the past, but it's not. Last year will help I believe was one of their best defensive players and they did get him out of the portal So that was good for them last year, but like they're gonna have to he's gonna have to change that or he's gonna be looking for a new job Will Morris: Yeah. I'll I'll I'll get into that during our biggest takeaways, the three biggest winners, three biggest losers. this whole conversation is part of that. But what I will say is I think one of the biggest takeaways for me from the game was just the caliber of athlete just did not seem to be the same from one team to another. LSU looked fast. Like Canon Stogner: yeah. Will Morris: way it looked like Clemson was running in slow motion. And it was at every level. It was on the line. It was a the mid part of the defense of linebackers, what weeks was running everywhere, the secondary I mean it just looked like Even even the like even the two best receivers for for Clemson, more I mean they just the the secondary just looked like they were suffocating him. And I don't Canon Stogner: Mm-hmm. Will Morris: know if that was more a result of the quarterback just couldn't get it to him and they were getting open and we just couldn't tell. But yeah, I just think LSU just looked very, very athletic. Like, you know, coming into the season, I think you think Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, and Notre Dame. Like that those are kind of your four like talent wise, you know, and I know that that seems stupid now, but at least for me, that's what I was, you know, coming into the season looking, dude. And LSU look like they ought to be right up in there. I mean, they look like Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Will Morris: they ought to be in that conversation. Maybe, maybe, you know, even up there with like Texas. So we'll see. It's it's early. Canon Stogner: Yeah, I can't I can't believe Charlie Weiss doesn't have a head coaching job yet. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: How has somebody not in college football not said, All right, well, let's get this Charlie Weiss guy away from Lane Kiffin? Because Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: Lane Kiffin doesn't even call plays anymore. He just they were saying on during the game that he just has his headset on and he listens to the play call. And if he doesn't like it or wants to do something out of that, he'll say something. But Charlie Weiss calls all the plays. And I mean you kinda we can talk about Ole Miss later, but I mean Ole Miss in the first half didn't look like a Charlie Weiss offense. Andrew Wright: Mm-mm. Canon Stogner: second half they obviously turned it up, but it was interesting. A n last thing about Clemson, I was listening to Game Day the morning of the game Saturday, and Dabo one of the things Dabo said was, I've seen my team practice, like I know what we've got. They just got to go out there and do it now. And then he also said, We're more experienced than any years we have been in the past. And I was like and I was kind of thinking, I'm like, Are you? 'Cause your quarterback is not experienced. You had nine guys drafted last year. Your starting defensive tackle. Vic Burley, he's suspended 'cause he got arrested. So are you more experienced or are you just trying Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: to come up with things to Will Morris: I would have thought last year he could have said that, but certainly not this year. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Yeah, Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: I was I was genuinely shocked. I thought maybe like they used a quote from last year, but no. No, they didn't. and then this is another little thing and I the game got so hard to watch. Of course I did watch all of it. but the game got so hard to watch, I started looking out for this little thing. And with one minute and twenty seconds left in the third quarter, LSU's backup QB was in and he scrambled. And Sammy Brown had a tackle. And the reason I'm saying all of this is I started watching midway through the second quarter. Sammy Brown is their starting linebacker who a lot of people he's a former five star. A lot of people thought he was gonna take over the defense. He's gonna be the captain and they lost a lot of players last year. He's the he's the guy this year. And he did not have a grass day on his jersey or on his pants until a minute twenty left in the third quarter when he had a like a three yard or three yard gain by the quarterback. And I I was just watching cause I was like, how is your how is your guy playing on real grass where I mean the grass is gonna stain your pants, especially when you're wearing white pants and he doesn't have a stain. Will Morris: Yeah, right. Canon Stogner: And it rained and Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: they also had 350 rushing yards during this moment. And so I'm like, how? 'Cause I mean, if you look up the other side, Whit Weeks all over the field, like you said. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: I mean, he was dominating. He had probably ten tackles. I haven't looked at the box score, but he had probably ten tackles. And I mean, he was he looked like a filthy mess. So, I mean, that's your starting linebacker, and it looked like he wa he just came into the game whenever he tackled Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: that quarterback. so it was interesting. It was a blowout by LSU, but let's move on to the Michigan Western Michigan game. Andrew, I know you had a lot to say about this. I don't know if your status has changed since the Andrew Wright: Yeah, it's changed a little bit. Shout out to the big team. think they got it right. So it has changed a little bit. Canon Stogner: okay. Will Morris: Go ahead, go ahead and walk us through that, dude. People need to hear Andrew Wright: Yeah. Just so like I guess... Canon Stogner: Yeah. So wait, so what one second. So Michigan did win thirteen to twelve. If you missed it, I don't know if you how you did, but if you missed it, they were losing twelve to seven. They got the ball left with what like 40 seconds left? Andrew Wright: 35, yeah, 35 seconds. Canon Stogner: 35 seconds left. Western Michigan has not scored a touchdown all game. Playing at Michigan, Kyle Whittingham's first game as head coach, and they throw a Hail Mary through the back of the end zone, time runs out. I turn the game off. I text all of y'all and I'm like, I can't believe Michigan just lost that game or whatever I just said. And then next thing you know, I go back and look at the group chat five minutes later and y'all were talking about Michigan's Hail Mary. And Andrew Wright: Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Canon Stogner: I'm like, what? And then I looked at my friend Avery and I'm like, he's like, dude, I can't believe Michigan lost that game. And I was like, well, Avery? I was like, I I Andrew Wright: Ha ha! Canon Stogner: don't know if they did. And so we go back and watch it. We turn the Clemson game off and we go back and watch it. And they get a Hail Mary and I'm sitting there thinking, How in the world do they find time on the clock? And then we get into the big question. So Andrew, go ahead. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Yes, like for everybody in the moment whether it's whoever you were with who you're watching with Twitter everybody in the moment is Like Western Michigan just got robbed because it was clear as day at least in the beginning clear as day like replays There are zeros on the clock when that ball got touched and so everybody is freaking out like that's the biggest Like they got screwed like that's the biggest one in college football history like those those kids never get a chance to do that again And then you kind of wait post game like what does everybody go say? You listen to Kyle Whittingham and he swore he actually thought there was one second left. And then you hear Western Michigan's coach like, yeah, our people are already in contact with the league, kind of trying to figure this out. And then you see the Big Ten statement, you start seeing more stuff on social media and it does appear, unfortunately enough, that they did get it right. The play, the first Hail Mary that was incomplete, something I was telling Will on TV. The TV clock went like had nine seconds on it when that play started and rather than there being a full second from nine to eight, it did just go immediately to eight. So it was a matter of tenths and thousands of seconds that we were talking about here that we can't see on TV. If it was like an NBA clock, that would be so much better rather than just the zero nine. Cause there are, I mean, the nine tenths of a second between there. So it does like the big 10 got it right. For Michigan, you can never be in that spot against that team to have to do that. your home field for Western Michigan you can't give up a Hail Mary like you can't do that I was shocked there was only four players in the end zone because they didn't really bring like a all-out blitz like some teams just kind of started doing in recent years withheld those Hail Mary attempts they just rushed three or four so I was kind of stunned that there were not any more than four guys in the back of the or in the end zone when that happened but yeah at the beginning stance was gonna be NCAA screwed Western Michigan Michigan's a bunch of frauds they cheated they portanoised a scumbag But now it's kind of going back to, okay, people actually did this, like they looked into it. They gave a very, very thorough explanation that we do not get from anybody in college football these days. The Big Ten did an incredible job of being very transparent with their even like, not even just visual, their audio and kind of how they walk through the whole process and what they determined was saying the guy established himself out of bounds and then jumped and touched the ball with one second left. So they did a very good job clearing that up and explaining it. Just felt awful for Western Michigan. Like those kids, like we said, those kids will never have a chance to beat a top 20 team again at their home stadium. Michigan, awful performance, just disastrous, terrible. You score a touchdown in your first drive of the game and then it takes you that long again. But yeah, Big 10 got it right, unfortunately. Good for them, happy for them. Heartbroken for Western Michigan. Will Morris: Yeah, I think I think if you're if you are just a fan of football in general, unless you're a Michigan fan, you just you just have to be heartbroken for those kids. Because like like we said, those the players, the coaches, the fans, they're probably not going to have a chance to beat their flagship program like that in their home stadium ever again. It might happen, but it's probably not in our lifetimes. So your heart just breaks for Western Michigan. It does seem, now that I've heard that me and Dude talked talked off the off the air here, and it does seem like they got it right. They were transparent about it. but as far as takeaways from Michigan, it was a disaster. Michigan only rushed for a hundred and six yards. That cannot happen if you fancy yourself Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Will Morris: as one of the like the hard-nosed guys, right? You wouldn't got a guy in Kyle Woodingham where they've had some of the top rushing offenses in the country since he's been there Canon Stogner: Mm-hmm. Will Morris: at Utah. So you go get a guy like that, you just can't rush for a hundred yards against a team from the Mac. Granted, they are one of the top teams in the Mac. I think they won it last year. They're one Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Will Morris: of the odds favorites to win it this year, but that just cannot happen. You cannot rush for only a hundred yards, especially with it being Michigan. Right? Michigan is one of those teams where you're just Canon Stogner: Mm-hmm. Will Morris: expected to be able to run the ball against basically anybody. and they didn't they did lose three turnovers, but again, it just shouldn't matter because it's Western Michigan, right? Even with the turnovers, you should be able to handle an opponent like that. And they didn't. So, if you're Michigan and you're looking forward to this week, I know y'all get into that the second episode, but you got Oklahoma coming in. I'm not sure that they're gonna be able to get the ball across the fifty this week, so we'll see. Canon Stogner: I'm not so sure they can get a first down. But I I will say, I mean, I kind of thought about like March Madness in college basketball. When Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: when you get to March Madness, anything can happen. And a lot of I a lot of times you can overlook a an opponent like that because it is Western Michigan when you have Oklahoma next the week after. But I look at it kind of like March Madness. I mean, if you're playing a a team in that a conference like that and you win by a buzzer beater, you're not gonna say, like Since we only beat by a buzzer beater, Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: like we gotta be we gotta look out for our next opponent in the tournament. it doesn't really matter. I mean, a win's a win. They're still gonna be ranked. a lot of people are Andrew Wright: Hmm. Canon Stogner: just gonna look at the wins and losses at the end of the year. And I mean, that's that's that is a big win for Obviously, they probably didn't expect it to go like that, but it is a big win for I thought storm of the field was a little classless, a little dirty. Andrew Wright: Yeah, Will Morris: Yeah, that that's ridiculous. Yes, it is. You cannot have Andrew Wright: it was was no it was embarrassens what it was it was it was embarrassing Canon Stogner: Well, what were yeah, what were your thoughts on Bryce Underwood? I you talked about the Russian game, but what were your thoughts on Bryce Underwood? Will Morris: Yeah, this I Andrew Wright: Willie, go ahead. Will Morris: mean, disappointing, I think. I mean he comes in and he's all world coming out of high school. You know, everybody everybody they they obviously start I think they started him for the season opener last year, right? He started all Canon Stogner: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Will Morris: he started every game, Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Will Morris: yeah. So he's I mean he's supposed to be, you know, the who's who of of that class. And he does look like he has all the arm talent in the world. He just can't i i honestly I'm not okay, this is this is gonna be disrespectful to Bryce Underwood and I do not mean it that way. But D D J Uyangalet Right, his arm talent and like if you just look at him physically, you're like, There's a quarterback, right? He moves well, he can even run for it a little bit. but he just could never hit the receivers. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Will Morris: and Underwood's starting to like he's not that bad, but he's certainly he has not met expectations at all yet. So Canon Stogner: Yeah. What would you who would you rather have? Him or DJ Lagway? Will Morris: that's a b that's a better that's a better comparison. That's who I should have given it to. I think I'd rather have underwood. Andrew Wright: DJ, I'll take DJ Lag Will Morris: Really? Canon Stogner: All right. Andrew Wright: with. know I texted you about Bryce Underwood during the game. I have no confidence in that guy, none. Canon Stogner: Yeah, I I mean he is he's a grown man. He's in or he's only a sophomore in college, but I think he's gonna get his feelings hurt Saturday. I really I really I Andrew Wright: I feel very strongly about that, Canon Stogner: really do. all right, well since we're talking about DJ Lagway, let's get into the Baylor and Auburn game. I think it was kind of what we expected. I mean, it was a close game. it came down to literally the last play of the game also on a two point conversion Baylor score to tie the game. well, they were one short. If they kick an extra point, they go to overtime. They elect to go for two, which I thought was the right call. Andrew, I know you're an aggressive guy. You probably thought so as well. And I I Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Yeah, I loved it. Yeah, I loved it. Canon Stogner: didn't think the play call was that bad. I mean, I just thought it was defense was better than the or the linebacker, whoever the guy was that made the tackle, just made the better play than the tight end Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: that caught the ball. but it was a great game. A little disappointed in Bayern Brown. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: so he went 26 for 35. He Did throw for 260. He had three interceptions. and he was also, he had 21 carries, which was nine more than their second running, than their leading running back. So we had 21 carries for 27 yards. so I don't know if it was just like his first game, jitters, or you know, just coming from USF, the competition's a lot better and he hasn't even played the SEC yet. I don't know if he was, I don't know what was going on, but he's gotta play better than that. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: when conference play opens and Will Morris: Well they didn't they they beat Florida last year, didn't they? Canon Stogner: Auburn or USF? USF, yeah. USF Will Morris: No, USF. Yeah, yeah. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: USF started out like three and They were ranked, I think. Yeah, they were they were really good. I think my they had a big game versus Miami. I might be mistaken, but I want to say game day may have gone to that game because I think USF was three and It was a big game for them in Miami. Andrew Wright: They got their doors blown off, but yeah, they had a big one going in. Canon Stogner: Yeah, they got pants on national television. But yeah, so I mean they were it right there last year. But let's talk about DJ Lagway. He completed fifty percent of his passes, twenty seven fifty four. He threw for three thirty three. and I thought he looked pretty good. Only scoring sixteen points was probably a letdown for him. And I mean he threw three passes and ten yards, or he ran three times for ten yards. but I thought he looked Much more comfortable playing with Baylor. And I heard Kirk Herbstreet say, like, on game day, that he thinks DJ Lagway's gonna have a big year. He said, because Florida's one of the hardest places you can play quarterback for. You obviously just fired your head coach Billy Napier last year with him. and he said, I think he's gonna have a lot better year. He's home, he's playing at his hometown, and I thought he looked okay. So Baylor could be a team that could go, what, seven and five, eight and four this year? Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: So it was it was a very good game. I mean it was kind of a snooze fest, but the ending turned out to be pretty good. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: all right. I would say probably the second the best game of the weekend or before last night. let's go into Oregon and Boise State. So Oregon won this game, was thirty-four twenty-seven. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Oregon won this game. I don't think it was really just as much about Oregon. I think Boise State looked really good. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: The running back is really good. I think you kind of just overlook Boise State because they they're coming off years with Ashton Genty, who was a Heisman finalist. But they ran the ball all over Oregon. I wish they would have thrown the ball a little bit more towards the end. I think they were relying too heavily on the run towards the end. but I mean they look really good. I don't think this game's gonna hurt them at all in the playoff if they were to have a good rest of the year. And I really didn't think Oregon looked that bad. I think their defense obviously wished they performed better, but Dante Moore looked really good. Their receiving core looked really good. Jordan Davison looked really good at running back. What were your thoughts? Andrew Wright: That was one of those thanks. I did definitely the best game of Saturday up until last night I'm kind of was flipping back and forth throughout the day kind of between that one in the Baylor Auburn games like didn't really get a full feel for how the game went and just kind of looking at score I was thinking okay pretty evenly match yardage. You see will be pretty even it was not organ had 500 yards compared to Boise's 275 so if you just look down the page at that you would think organ dominated the game and I really don't don't even know what that Means for either side for the final score like I don't know if you should be more concerned as the Oregon fan that you just almost doubled that team's yardage total and only won by a touchdown or if you're a Boise fan you look said man we got out game by 225 yards and we hung with the number two team in the country It's like just very very exciting game. Dante Moore played excellent 380 yards three touchdowns. He looked really good Maddox Madsen. He played. Okay, he had three touchdowns. We played. Okay 15 to 29. That'll have to be a little bit better But yeah, like you said, overall that game will not hurt Boise in the slightest. They look very, good and they are a true G6 threat. Canon Stogner: Absolutely. Will Morris: Yeah. Yeah, I was I was impressed with Boise. again I'm right I'm right there with you do I you know, watching the game, I was thinking like, golly, they they do look very evenly matched, which from an Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Will Morris: Oregon's you know point of view, that's disappointing. You definitely don't you definitely don't want that to be the case. it's still early season, but you got a you got a pretty experienced team up there in Oregon and obviously high sky high expectations. but they did out game them by two hundred and twenty yards. It does look like Boise State now is definitely one of the best group of six teams. They were my pick to get in the playoff. so so yeah. So we'll see what happens. again it's early, but I think I would honestly I'd come out feeling pretty good if I was either Boise State or Oregon. Canon Stogner: Yeah, it was it was probably it was my second favorite game of the weekend. but let's go ahead and run it talk about our or my favorite game of the weekend. It happened on last night, Sunday. Let's talk about Ole Miss and Louisville. So this game was an absolute this is probably a classic that you'll see in ten years on like YouTube, like top ten games of the century, something like that. Very good. I thought the quarterback play was awesome. I think Jeff Brahms And his son or brother, whoever is it is it a son or brother, Mike Braum? Will Morris: I thought it was his brother, but I'm not sure. Canon Stogner: It yeah, Andrew Wright: I yeah. Canon Stogner: I I think they're one of the top coaches. I mean, Isaac Brown had a very quiet night. He had sixteen carries for thirty-six yards. that's two yards a carry almost. but they scored thirty-eight points. And I think as a Louisville fan, yeah, you lose on a walk-off field goal, but you look at Lincoln Conholes, who came from Ohio State and he threw for three hundred and seven yards, two touchdowns, and he missed two wide open receivers for a touchdown, too. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: I thought they played really good. I didn't think their defense was that bad. I mean, they gave up forty-one points, but they were on a lot of explosive plays. and then you look at Ole Miss, started off quiet. Trinidad kinda was a little shaky and rusty the first half, but he came out that second half and mean he looked like the quarterback he did last year. He looked like our number one QB in the country or SEC, whichever one we had. I thought he looked really good. Deuce Anderson is an electric receiver. He reminds me a lot of Jamison Williams whenever he was at Alabama. And very good game. I mean, Trinidad only threw three interceptions last year. He did throw one last night, but it's more of a good play by the defender, laying out for it and, you know, trapping the ball while he falls on it. So very good game. Pete Golding is a defensive guy. Defense probably not happy about giving up 38 points. but they did get the win. What were your thoughts on that, Will? Will Morris: Yeah, I kind of have two big takeaways. One one for both Olmus and and Louisville. my biggest takeaway for Olmus, and you've already touched on it, is Trinidad Chambulis looks like the best quarterback in the country. I mean, his his ability to stand in the pocket and feel where guys are and move so that way he can either take off or make a throw, I think is unmatched. he did it several times where there was just one time I was watching, there was a corner blitz, and you're not supposed to be able to see that. It was from his blind side, corner blitz. And he saw it immediately. Took off, rolled to his right, and then hit a guy at the sideline for like a fifteen yard gain. Like if you're like n I would say probably ninety percent of the quarterbacks do not see that, and they either get hurried and have to throw it away or they just take a set. But he saw it and rolled out. So anyway, so I No, no, I don't think so. Canon Stogner: And you and you can't y you can't coach that either. Not really. Yeah. Will Morris: You either have or you don't. So that was kind of my big takeaway for Ole Miss. Like you said, Pete Golden there, he's a defensive guy. a little disappointing, I guess, if you're if you're Ole Miss there because I think they thought that they were tamed enough and brought in enough through the portal that they would actually have a defense that could match up with basically anybody. now for Louisville, and I was high on Louisville coming into this season, so I thought they were going to be the team that played Miami in the AC championship. And I think for me, honestly, I would be extremely pleased if I was Louisville. I think he Canon Stogner: Yeah. Will Morris: just played with one of the best teams in the country. I think that I I was I was I heard on the the the announcers said the stat and I thought this was this is kind of eye opening, but they've had eight losses in their last two years. So they've had nine wins, four losses in each year. Seven of those seven of those eight losses those last two years have come by one possession or less. So very easily could have been a ten win team or more the last two years. obviously looking to take that next step this year. They have a huge game with SMU in a couple of weeks, that is gonna have massive implications for who we think is going to play Miami in the A C C championship. So I would be a little disappointed if I was Ole Miss on the defensive side. I'd feel very comfortable w with where my offense is. And if you're an Ole Miss fan, you gotta think Pete Golden's probably gonna figure the defensive out. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Will Morris: So if I was either Ole Miss or Louisville, I'd I'd I'd honestly I would be pleased with with the way both of those teams play. Canon Stogner: I mean, yeah, I I thought other than the two or three plays last night where they had a guy wide open, I thought the defense, I mean, it's very fixable. I mean, I think a lot of it was just missed tackles or bad angles that they were doing. I don't think it was more like the scheme or guys not being prepared. Other than those two or three plays. I just thought it was more tackling and stuff. But you know, it's your first game. You're playing a very good opponent. That's use that's what's that's what's gonna happen. But they do have a big game in two weeks against LSU, so they cannot make those same mistakes. Because if they do, they will get blown out. But I I hate to keep harping on them, but you look at Louisville, they play a SEC team and they lose by three on a walk off field goal. And then Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: and they Louisville's going through the portal against a top SEC team. And then you compare a another SEC team in Clemson playing a top SEC team and they get blown out. So I think That shows you where you are as a Clemson team and a fan of how far back you are now that you were the previous years. but anyways, I'm done with Clemson for right now. Andrew, go ahead. Andrew Wright: So yeah didn't get to watch much of this one kind of came back Caught the very end my biggest thing just from the very end of the game and kind of looking back after some stats was Lincoln Kehoe's man I mean this guy hasn't started a game since a bowl game against Missouri in 2023 and I vaguely remember watching that game against Missouri and he was terrible and now he was a freshman which and that's there's a lot of time between 2023 and right now But he was a freshman in that game. He looked awful and man. He was impressive last night and that was Canon Stogner: He's not scared either. Andrew Wright: No, and that was like we talked about we did our ACC stuff That was my biggest concern and Isaac Brown was my most important non QB in the country this year Because I didn't trust Lincoln Keyholtz. Don't know what he has hasn't started since that year man. He looked good and Isaac Brown left hurt as he'd like bad night Like you said only 36 yards kind of a little bit of an injury I think they said on the broadcast that kind of kept him out of most of the second half But man if he can come back healthy and Lincoln Keyholtz keeps playing like this. I will view them so much differently that I did go into the season because he was a very big concern for me and he looked very impressive against what's supposed to be one of the better defenses in the SEC. So that was definitely my biggest takeaway is how good he looked and how good that team can be if he continues that with a very good and healthy Isaac Brown. Will Morris: And I'll even say this for for Louisville's defense, I wouldn't even obviously you gave up forty one points, so it's hard to be like excited if you're a Louisville fan, but there were several times that I I think honestly it was just that Trinidad Tambless is so good. There were several times where a normal quarterback probably takes a loss or just throws it away where he turns it into a ten or fifteen yard gain, either by hitting somebody that's rolling the other way or he just runs for it. So I didn't even think Louisville's defense looked that bad. I think they Canon Stogner: Yeah. Will Morris: just ran into the best quarterback in the country, at least Canon Stogner: Yeah. Will Morris: through week one. Canon Stogner: Did he look bigger last night to y'all, Trinidad? Andrew Wright: From what I saw Dan, yeah, I thought he looked a little bit bigger. Canon Stogner: I I I don't I just from last year watched him, I thought he was more of a like a shorter, dynamic guy that Andrew Wright: Correct. Canon Stogner: could run. He looked like he was I mean, he was full out there. He's a big dude. Andrew Wright: You look a grown man, Mm-hmm. He is. Canon Stogner: he's but yeah, he's good. He's got the legs, he's got the arm, and like you said, he knows how to escape from pressure and get out of trouble and just make the right play. so yeah, that was good to watch him. I do want to talk about an SEC stat real quick. so SEC did go 16-0 this week. They only played two power four games, or maybe yeah, three power four games, sorry. Three of the 16 were powerful games. But I did the calculations last night, and out of the 15 games, this is before the Louisville Ole Miss game, out of the 15 games that SEC had played, they as a conference, they averaged 49 points a game, almost 50, and They gave up less than a touchdown as a conference. They gave up six point nine points a game. So that number is forty-nine to six. And that is before the old miss game. But they completely dominated the Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: the weekend. but let's talk about the Big Ten. I know Rutgers lost, I don't know what the complete record was as a conference for them, but Ohio State looked good. Michigan obviously snuck away. Penn State looked really good. Andrew, you might be right about that. You might be heading in the right direction. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: what were your thoughts on Penn State? Andrew Wright: Just really good kind of what we what I hope to see out of them. I really like Rocco good first game for Matt Campbell and somebody on the Brandon Walker show earlier called in early in the week and kind of said that Marshall over Penn State was their big upset prediction and Brandon Walker's like that's not even crazy to say that anymore because of all the stuff we've seen in recent years. And so they they had every reason with the brand new team and a brand new coach and not kind of mesh together yet to go out there and kind of stumble a little bit against the Marshall team coming in that has pulled off some big upsets in recent years like. The Notre Dame games years ago they went in there and won, but they didn't. They look very good. Rocco Beck was really good. So yeah, very, very confident about kind of where I stand on Penn State. And that was very encouraging to kind of see them go out there and dominate handle business like that. And their first game with Rocco and Matt Campbell. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Well, what was your biggest takeaway from the Big Ten? Will Morris: Yeah, I thought it was a very weak show and and and we'll get into I'll get into this more whenever we do our three biggest winners and losers. but I mean you look up and down, I mean you had, you know, the top three I think then won. you got Oregon, Ohio State, and Indiana. really out of those three, the only one that you should really feel good about is Ohio State. I know Oregon we d still don't feel terrible about that 'cause it was Boise State, but Indiana actually got out gained in their game. It was three hundred and sixty seven total yards to three hundred and sixty five, like They only had a few more first downs than them. So actually they got out gained on first downs as well. I'm looking at it now. So nineteen North Texas first downs versus eighteen for Indiana. I've so I think that that final score is very deceiving. I'm sure Signetti's gonna pick apart everything that he possibly can. I mean, he's not gonna be happy even if even if they had like a South Carolina type showing. But yeah, I thought I thought top to bottom, very, very disappointed for the Big Ten. And I'll I'll get into that a little bit more later. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Yeah, no, I agree. And I mean I saw I didn't watch much of that game, but I thought it was gonna be a blowout just because North Texas did lose their head coach and Messenger going to er yeah. What what is? Yeah, Mester Maker, sorry, Andrew Wright: Master Maker. Yeah, we... Canon Stogner: going to Oklahoma State. Andrew did text me about Mesti Maker. I was very high on him in the Big Twelve this year. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Yeah. Canon Stogner: didn't play great. Didn't play great. so yeah, Andrew Wright: No, he did not. No. Canon Stogner: I could be eating my words, but I do think caught a lot of flack about this, but my sneaky game to watch this week was the East Carolina and Alabama game. Andrew Wright: Hahaha Canon Stogner: And I knew very quickly I was dead wrong about it. I never Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: said East Carolina would upset him. I just said watch out for this game because it could be a lot closer than people think. It's a noon game. Keelan Russell first start ever. And I think Alabama's probably happy of the way Keelan Russell looked. I mean, he c he could run and he looked very good throwing the ball. Ryan Coleman Williams looked pretty good other than his one or two drops that he had. So I mean I think Alabama's pleased. but it's you can't it's hard to say anything about the games this past weekend because you know it does not matter. It has no implications. But yeah. all right, so let's get into our final segment. We're going to do our three biggest winners and our three biggest losers. How do you all wanna do this? Y'all wanna go one at a time or all three? Will Morris: I have both my b my winners and my losers are paired up. So if we wanna just do like you know, we can do our our winner and loser together and then second winner, loser and third winner and loser. Andrew Wright: That's fine. I'll do what I want to do. Canon Stogner: Go ahead, Will. Take it away then, Will. Take it away. Will Morris: Alright, to my so my biggest winner, well my my number one winner, my number one loser is the SC SEC in the Big Ten. So you already kind of covered this, but the SEC look like they have like ten or twelve teams that can make the playoffs. Now, obviously they're playing inferior competition, and I understand that, but it does not happen every year. And I I'm sure there's some, you know, some statistician could go figure this out. But it does not happen where you finish with an average score of 49 to 6, even against inferior competition. So I went and looked at the FPI, and this is updated after the weekend, and I was talking with Du about this, and I just thought this was crazy. So the SEC has 12 of the top 30 teams, seven of the top 15. Okay, compare that to the Big Ten, nine of the top 30, 5 of the top 15. But here's where it gets crazy to me. So Oklahoma is the 11th best team in the country, sixth best in the SEC, and they're projected to go 7.7 and 4 and 4. So they are the 11th best team in the country, and they might go s they might have seven to eight wins just because they're in the SEC. And then you go to the Big Ten, their tenth best team is ranked 45 in the FBI. That would be the second worst team in the SEC. There's only one team worse than that in the SEC, and that's Arkansas. They're the 60th best team. But yeah, I mean, if you're the Big Ten and you're trying to compare yourself to the SEC, you're you're you're trying to brag about how top heavy your conference is. And I think that faltered this week to some degree. Indiana got outgained. Oregon had a tester against Boise State. So if you think like our best Andrew Wright: Thanks. Will Morris: three are just so much better than the SEC's best three, I think that that argument starts to have some holes in it. And then the death of the SEC just showed up as well. so yeah, so I think the biggest winner for me was the SEC. Again, I know it's week one, but you cannot have a stronger showing than that. the biggest loser I think was the Big Ten, where even teams like Michigan and Michigan State were just faltering. Penn State looked good. Southern Cal looked good. Obviously Ohio State looked good. But other than that, Iowa looked good. But yeah, there was just there's some holes in the Big Ten. Andrew Wright: you Will Morris: and their depth and even their top end performers. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Andrew? Andrew Wright: So yeah, my biggest winner loser paired together as well biggest winner of the weekend for me was LSU biggest loser was Clemson and kind of we've already covered basically all that just really but like I said last week when we were doing our kind of our preview We really didn't know what to expect from either side in this game And that's why we were so like unsure of what we were thought what happened like me you talked about Canyon we were Almost more surprised at LSU blew Clemson out than we would have been if Clemson would have kind of hung around and pulled off an upset just because we were so unsure of what would happen and what those teams actually look like And then you go out and they play 60 minutes of football and we kind of see, okay, this is exactly what these teams look like. And yeah, LSU was far and away the biggest winner of the weekend for me. And then Clustle was the biggest loser far and away for me as well. Canon Stogner: Yeah. my biggest winner from this past weekend, it feels like forever ago when they played. my biggest winner was Miami. They looked exactly the part. Malachi Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Tony, I I told Avery the other day, I said, I think I'd rather have Malachi Tony than Jeremiah Smith on my team. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: They're two completely different receivers, but Malik Itoni might be in the best system ever for him. The way they get the ball to him and The amount of times that he made a D one defensive back look stupid. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: You there's there's probably a a highlight tape on YouTube of just from the Stanford game of like a top ten place from Alec I Tony just making somebody just look absolutely foolish. I Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: mean, there were people like making full on like to the ground tackles on Joe Blade in the grass because of how bad he made them look. I mean, he was all over the place. Darian Mensah looked very good. I mean, I know it was against Stanford, but it was a Friday night game in Stanford and it was his first start with the new team. I mean, you kind of expect a little bit of I guess shakiness or not comfortable being out there or being rusty in the first game, but it was not that. but I Andrew Wright: Uh-uh. Canon Stogner: do think their offensive line has to get a little bit better. Mark Fletcher did not do anything at all, hardly. so gonna be an interesting season for them. I do think they'll dominate the ACC, but I thought Malik Itoni and Miami and Darian Mensah was my biggest winner of the weekend. I'll go ahead and jump into my second biggest winner. It was Lincoln from Louisville. Is Kyle Holtz or Keen Holtz? Andrew Wright: I think I think it's keen holds but I could be I mean I have no idea you could Canon Stogner: Yeah. Andrew Wright: they could play three straight weeks and three now so could say it three different ways so there's really Canon Stogner: Yeah. Will Morris: Yeah, yeah. yeah. Canon Stogner: I mean I watched the full game last night and I still don't even know which one they said. but yeah, I was Andrew Wright: Yeah, just call him Lincoln. Canon Stogner: Lincoln looked really good. he threw the ball a lot better. He completed like I think sixty or seventy percent of his passes. He did miss a couple open guys, like we said, but their offensive line is very good. They have one of the most expensive offenselines in the country. that whole unit. And he could run the ball. I did not know he could run like he was. And Andrew Wright: Mm-mm. Canon Stogner: he was not s scared to get down. I mean, he was trying to run through people on Ole Miss's defense. So very pleased with him, although they lost. I think he looked really good in his first like start. So really good. Who was your second biggest winner, Will? Will Morris: Yeah, so this is this is kind of interesting, but they're paired together. So I think the biggest winner would be the group of six. And then the biggest loser, because the group of six had kind of a strong showing, at least at the top, I think the biggest loser would be Western Michigan. So I think if you're the group of six and you're trying to think, okay, who are we like who out of us is gonna actually get that playoff spot? Right, you got Boise State, I think you got Memphis now, you got UNLV, Toledo's put on a good showing. so I think overall I think the the group of six had a strong showing there. obviously because of that, if you're Western Michigan, if you could have actually gotten that win there, that puts you in a really, really strong spot heading into selection Sunday whenever that comes, but because that ended up being a loss, obviously that puts you at a at a severe disadvantage, right? Just like you and L V, like they gotta run the table now. Boise State, I think actually they possibly could lose another game, depending on who it's to. Probably not, but it depends on how the rest of the group of six shakes out. But yeah, I thought I thought overall, I think the top end of the group of six had some really strong showings and it seems like they might actually have a team that can maybe compete with some of the rest of of the top end of college football. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Andrew. Andrew Wright: So yeah, my second, we've kind of covered my second, third biggest winners. Boise and the SEC were my second, third biggest winners. Boise just a really good showing on the road in a really tough environment, kind of proved themselves. And then like we said with the SEC, undefeated weekend, first time since 1997 that they've gone through week one undefeated. So yeah, very, very impressive for them and kind of helping themselves with the argument of kind of the big 10 SEC argument that'll keep going on throughout the entire season. So yeah, Boise and SEC, two and three biggest winners for me. Canon Stogner: Yeah, I didn't have a third biggest winner. I didn't think there was anything else to really take away from this weekend. but I mean, I if I had to say, I would say probably the SEC, obviously just dominating. But my three biggest losers was number one was Washington. Washington really that was really a one score game yesterday. They scored late. and Demon Williams played pretty dang good. And they only beat Washington State by fourteen points at home. in Washington State, I don't think they'll win many games this year. and then I s did see a couple of clips about their head coach. It's his first year as the head coach, and he looked Andrew Wright: He's a jerk. Canon Stogner: yeah, he looked like an absolute moron out there. so I was pretty I thought my Washington was my biggest loser. My second biggest loser was Clemson, obviously embarrassing. And then my third biggest loser, although they won, was Michigan. Just of how it had to happen, how bad they looked at home, and that's probably the last thing they wanted to see going into Oklahoma. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: so that was my three biggest losers. All right, well, that wraps up our week one Saturday slate recap. We appreciate Will so much for coming in. He'll be back here with us next week to probably recap week two. we have a lot better slate this weekend and Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: expecting some pretty good games. and we're also going to talk about our spread picks on Thursday's episode. Andrew, let's not spoil anything right now, but I think we had a I had a pretty poor showing. Andrew Wright: I mean, under $500. Canon Stogner: Yeah, poor sewing. and I will be bad. I Andrew Wright: Yeah, a lot of Will Morris: Picking the s it's picking the spread though. So it's you know it's Andrew Wright: season left. Yeah, a lot Canon Stogner: Yeah, yeah. Andrew Wright: of season left. Canon Stogner: I'll be better. I'll be better. I y I'll make that known now. but yeah, so that wraps up this episode. make sure you like, subscribe, comment, call into the number if you need to, and we'll see you guys on Thursday.
