- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:12I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and let's jump straight into
- 0:14today's Quote of the Day. Today's quote comes from Colin
- 0:18Kaepernick, a former NFL quarterback for the San
- 0:22Francisco 49ers Super Bowl finalist and one of the most
- 0:27recognizable figures in the history of American sports
- 0:30activism. A man who has faced more
- 0:34pressure on the field and off it than most people will ever
- 0:40counter in an entire lifetime. He once said pressure comes from
- 0:50a lack of preparation. Interesting.
- 0:55Now that's the first idea. Hold on to that, because by the
- 1:00end of today's episode, we're going to turn it completely
- 1:04around. At face value, Kaepernick's
- 1:08quote is about as direct as wisdom gets.
- 1:11Pressure isn't random, and it isn't bad luck.
- 1:15It isn't something that simply arrives from outside and
- 1:18overwhelms you. It is, at least in part, a
- 1:23signal, a gap made obvious, the distance between where your
- 1:28preparation ends and where the moment demands you to be.
- 1:33Think about situations in your life that have felt
- 1:36overwhelming, the deadline that sent you into a panic, the
- 1:41conversation you dreaded, the performance that kept you up at
- 1:45night. In almost every case, at the
- 1:48root of the pressure was some version of the same thing.
- 1:52Not enough time spent preparing, not enough reps taken in
- 1:57practice, not enough quiet work done before the intense moment
- 2:02arrived. Kaepernick lived this truth at
- 2:06the highest level of professional sport as a
- 2:09quarterback breeding a defense in real time with 80,000 people
- 2:14watching and 300 LB men moving toward him.
- 2:20That is pressure at its most literal form, and his answer to
- 2:24it was always the same, he said. Sometimes when things are going
- 2:30really well, I feel like I've already seen things like I'm
- 2:35watching a rerun because I've studied this defense and I know
- 2:40what comes next. Preparation doesn't eliminate
- 2:44the moment, It makes the moment feel familiar.
- 2:49And familiar is the opposite of pressure.
- 2:51So that's the first truth. Most pressure is a preparation
- 2:56problem in disguise. But here's where the story takes
- 3:00a turn. Because there's a second kind of
- 3:03pressure, one that no amount of preparation can prevent.
- 3:08The kind that doesn't come from being unprepared.
- 3:12The kind that comes from being in the middle of becoming
- 3:15something. The pressure of growth, the
- 3:20discomfort of the hard season, the weight of a challenge that
- 3:24is actively making you better, even when it doesn't feel that
- 3:28way. And for that kind of pressure,
- 3:32an unknown author left us with this quote.
- 3:36What feels like pressure today is often preparation in
- 3:41disguise. Read that alongside Kaepernick's
- 3:45quote, and something extraordinary happens.
- 3:49The two ideas complete each other.
- 3:51Kaepernick tells us that pressure reveals where
- 3:54preparation is missing, and the unknown author tells us that
- 3:58sometimes the pressure itself is the preparation, the difficulty,
- 4:05the resistance, the discomfort that is quietly building
- 4:09something in you that cannot be built any other way.
- 4:13I've been training for a new job for the past two weeks,
- 4:17something totally new and different from what I've done in
- 4:19the past. The training has been intense.
- 4:23Everyday new information, practice and then homework with
- 4:26lots of reading and quizzes to complete.
- 4:29Definitely information overload. And at the end, we had a final
- 4:34exam as well as an on the job test to determine our ability to
- 4:39use the new skills safely. It definitely felt like
- 4:43pressure, but that pressure is the preparation so that we don't
- 4:49feel it when we're actually working on the jaw because now
- 4:53we're prepared. So here's the question first,
- 4:58where is pressure showing up in your life right now that is
- 5:01pointing directly at a gap in your preparation?
- 5:05What are you being called to prepare for more thoroughly?
- 5:09And 2nd, where is pressure showing up?
- 5:12That isn't a gap at all, but growth in progress.
- 5:18What difficult season are you currently in the middle of that
- 5:22might not be breaking you down, but quietly building you up?
- 5:27Because both are true. Sometimes pressure comes from a
- 5:30lack of preparation, and sometimes what feels like
- 5:35pressure today is preparation in disguise.
- 5:41That's it for today. I'm Anna Mcgeburn, signing off
- 5:44for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 5:49Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
