- 0:28Of. Good evening everyone and happy
- 0:36Tuesday. I'm excited to bring you another
- 0:38episode tonight of the Dog Tag Diva podcast.
- 0:42I've got my beautiful, wonderful Co host with me tonight, Lauren,
- 0:46and I've got Rachel Farmer with us this evening as well.
- 0:50And we are closing out May, which is one of the Mental
- 0:54Health Awareness Month. And what better night to have on
- 0:58Rachel. And we're going to be.
- 1:00We're talking about yoga and health and Wellness and how to
- 1:03take care of ourselves. Welcome to the show, Rachel.
- 1:07Awesome. Thank you so much for having me.
- 1:08This is such an honor to be here getting to share a little bit
- 1:10about my story and just answer some questions, hopefully share
- 1:14some light. Absolutely.
- 1:17And that you're you're friends with Lauren.
- 1:18So how tell everybody about how you guys know each other and how
- 1:20you got dragged into this? She got dragged in.
- 1:24No, she willingly came because she loves me.
- 1:26Yes, I did. I was so grateful to meet
- 1:28Lauren. I think it's been a year, like a
- 1:31little. Bit over a year and a half
- 1:32because April. Oh my God, two years.
- 1:35Has it already been 2? Wow, time flat and I'm old as
- 1:39shit now but. I know I met you when you just
- 1:42had one kid and now you got 2 so time.
- 1:45Isn't. Yeah.
- 1:47So Lauren and I connected through Arbonne, which is a
- 1:49health and Wellness company that we both work with.
- 1:51And we met at a leadership retreat and we just connected,
- 1:54clicked, and really the rest has been history.
- 1:58Yeah, I mean truly. And now you're in.
- 2:00Both of you bitches are in Florida and I'm stuck up north
- 2:06for now. For now.
- 2:09So yeah, no, Rachel's a total. I will say this like to to
- 2:13preface, but like total inspiration.
- 2:15So when I met her, I was like, who is this woman that went by
- 2:20herself to Bali like I was not me, the one that like
- 2:24volunteered for deployment that intimidates the crap out of me.
- 2:28I'm like she went like we had battle buddies.
- 2:30Kristen. Yes, we did like we even though
- 2:34I deployed not knowing anybody, right, like I met them as I
- 2:36went, I met except for back you. That was for you, right?
- 2:39Like this girl just like took flight and rolled out with not a
- 2:46damn thing but a bag and and I. Was like.
- 2:49That I said that is terrifying. Like, oh, it's like God bless.
- 2:53Like it was so moving and inspirational.
- 2:56And to hear her calling, I'm so I'm so excited to hear like
- 3:00rehear everything and her new vision now and 'cause she's
- 3:04branching out. So I'm super excited to have her
- 3:06here. That's so sweet, Thank you.
- 3:08Yeah. So tell us a little bit more
- 3:10about yourself, Rachel and your background and how you got
- 3:12involved in all the things. Yes.
- 3:14So I am currently living in Florida, but I'm actually
- 3:18originally from Maryland, but I've been in Florida for a
- 3:20while. So I went to University of Miami
- 3:22and then I went to Nova Southeastern where I actually
- 3:25studied to become a physician assistant.
- 3:27So I have a medical background, but around I want to say it's
- 3:31actually been two years since I have not practiced.
- 3:33I got really burnt out working in medicine.
- 3:36It just wasn't giving me the lifestyle that was sustainable
- 3:39for I love my patients, I love the actual role and
- 3:42responsibility of what I did as a dermatology PA, but it was
- 3:46just taking more than it was giving to me and I knew that
- 3:49something had to change. I already had this love for
- 3:52health and Wellness through Arbonne, which is again the
- 3:54company that connected Lauren and I.
- 3:56So I knew that I had this passion with wanting to help
- 3:58people. I knew I loved health and
- 4:00Wellness and I knew personally myself, I loved yoga, especially
- 4:04being up in Maryland. I was working as APA up there.
- 4:06It was so cold, I was so stressed and hot yoga was my go
- 4:10to. So I found myself just going to
- 4:13hot yoga all the time. And then when it was time for me
- 4:16to leave my job and I didn't know what I wanted to do next, I
- 4:20had this, you know, bucket list on my phone.
- 4:22And one of the things was to do a yoga retreat in Bali.
- 4:25I then pivoted and I figured, why go do a retreat when I could
- 4:29do a training and actually get a skill and get to learn a little
- 4:32bit more? So last February, I went to Bali
- 4:35to study yoga. And I didn't go really with the
- 4:38hopes of even becoming a teacher.
- 4:40I just knew that yoga helped me. I didn't know what I wanted to
- 4:43do. And I loved yoga and was just
- 4:45hoping that the pieces would fall into place.
- 4:47And they pretty much have. So I've been teaching for about
- 4:50a year now. So I have my own business,
- 4:52Rachel Farmer Wellness. I do everything, yoga, basically
- 4:55everything besides work at a studio.
- 4:57So I do a lot of markets, corporate events, bachelorettes,
- 5:00birthday parties, privates, all the different things.
- 5:02And I am now getting more into health coaching.
- 5:05I completed the health coaching program through Institute of
- 5:08Integrative Nutrition IIN, and I'm going through my board
- 5:11certification now. So it's been really fulfilling
- 5:13to kind of branch out from away from that medical side and get
- 5:17to help people a little bit more holistically.
- 5:20Yeah, you know, and Lauren and I have talked about this on the
- 5:22show in the past too, about just the state of Healthcare is just
- 5:27it's not good. And there are so many of us who
- 5:31are feeling stressed, burnt out, overwhelmed, over stimulated.
- 5:36So you know we. Under appreciated.
- 5:38Under appreciate you all understaffed.
- 5:41All the things, yeah, it's so real.
- 5:43And, you know, one of the things that I really struggled with was
- 5:46I saw a new patient every 15 minutes.
- 5:49I couldn't do a whole lot in 15 minutes.
- 5:51You know, I could do the skin check.
- 5:52I could provide the education. I could.
- 5:54But I really feel like we need to have longer, more thorough
- 5:57conversations with people because you don't go to the
- 5:59doctors to get healthy. You get healthy outside of the
- 6:02doctor's office by the way that you eat.
- 6:05By the time you're in the doctor's office, something's
- 6:07gone too wrong. So I really love helping people
- 6:10prevent, you know, getting. Yeah.
- 6:13And it's really just kind of a telling statement to where we
- 6:18kind of are as a society, right? Like, we've got a whole TV show
- 6:21dedicated to people who just kind of overeat and they're just
- 6:24morbidly obese and they're, you know, kind of living off the
- 6:29system. And, and, you know, from a
- 6:32psychological standpoint, a lot of them are, you know, feeding
- 6:34their feelings because they've been sexually abused or
- 6:37something. And a lot of them are
- 6:39uneducated. And like you said, by the time
- 6:41they get to that point, like it's too late.
- 6:43We need to be doing the preventative stuff.
- 6:45And it just feels like a factory anymore.
- 6:47We're just not doing what, Like, I in my big gripe as a nurse
- 6:51right now is I feel like I'm in front of the computer so much.
- 6:53I'm not with my patients and I'm just feeling so far removed.
- 6:58I feel like we're tasters. Right.
- 7:00Like I'm doing a task and I'm not doing the things that I want
- 7:04to do to actually nurture and take care of my patient.
- 7:07Right. Yeah, 100%.
- 7:08I felt like I was looking at the iPad, spending more time
- 7:11charting than I was actually, you know, providing that
- 7:13education. And like he said, the state of
- 7:15the US, like we are overfed but undernourished.
- 7:18And we're so you don't get to build a report like I don't know
- 7:21about you guys. We all have doctors like let's
- 7:23be you get sick, you go to a doctor.
- 7:25I don't know what you guys, but I don't there's no rapport, no
- 7:29connection. I don't trust you because you
- 7:32barely know me and I barely know you.
- 7:34But Rachel LED us in one. We went to another a leadership
- 7:38retreat together and Rachel LED us in a mindful meditation.
- 7:42And in that 30 minute span of her chatting with us and then
- 7:45leading us and then the after, afterwards, it was still more
- 7:49time building a I'd already obviously a friendship with
- 7:52Rachel, but like you felt a different connection by just
- 7:56like little holistic things added into your daily life, you
- 7:59build a better rapport with the practitioner who is
- 8:02practitioning you, who is actually helping, helping you
- 8:05and, and wanting you to, to to, God forbid, be healthy, you
- 8:11know? So that's my tangent.
- 8:12I'm sorry it's off. Topic So how was Bali that
- 8:16sounds? Amazing.
- 8:18I mean, so cliche, but life changing of course.
- 8:21It was obviously a big leap of faith.
- 8:24I had never really solo travelled like that before.
- 8:27I had never been to Asia. And I remember getting to the
- 8:30airport thinking to myself, why did I sign up for five weeks?
- 8:33Like why couldn't I even just do like the three weeks of the
- 8:35training? I was like, why did I decide to
- 8:37be so brave and do this five weeks?
- 8:39But by the end of the five weeks I was like, wow, I definitely
- 8:42could have stayed longer. So I loved it.
- 8:44I think it's such a special place over there.
- 8:46There's this very spiritual energy and people are just so
- 8:49connected with their land and their culture.
- 8:52One of my favorite things is just walking down the street.
- 8:54They would always put out little offerings throughout the day.
- 8:57So they would put out little flowers and cookies and incense.
- 9:00And it was just such a reminder that they just appreciate the
- 9:03world around them and realize that they're more than just one
- 9:06person. Like there's just a big
- 9:07community mindset over there. It's not individualistic.
- 9:12So even just outside of the yoga teacher training, I felt like I
- 9:15was just able to learn so much from being in that environment
- 9:18and talking to the people over there.
- 9:19So if you ever get the chance to head on over to Bali, I would
- 9:22highly recommend. Bucket list it, Chris.
- 9:26Yeah, absolutely, for sure. I agree.
- 9:29I mean, it kind of sounds like you had your own little version
- 9:31of like eat, pray, love A. 100% it was my eat, pray, love.
- 9:35I was going over there confused, not knowing where I wanted to
- 9:38live, not knowing what I wanted to do for work.
- 9:40And I really feel like I left with just a lot of sense of
- 9:44clarity. And I feel like it just
- 9:45connected me back to myself. And after being in school,
- 9:48especially for so long, and being in a position where I was
- 9:51constantly falling rules and following protocols, it was nice
- 9:54to just kind of reconnect with myself because I had lost that.
- 9:58Yeah, I think that's huge. Like when's the last time any of
- 10:01us weren't like, I mean, right now Rachel, Rachel's on the
- 10:03path. But like, think about it.
- 10:05And in 20/20/25, what? When are we listening to
- 10:09ourselves? What are we pouring into
- 10:10ourselves? Like this whole self-care is not
- 10:13selfish and and you can't pour for an empty cup.
- 10:15Like, yeah, freaking preach. We know this, but nobody is
- 10:19helping us to do those things. And we're so overworked and
- 10:22overran and and all of us. It's not just moms and not just
- 10:25women, and it's literate the gamut.
- 10:28Because welcome to 2025, where burnt bread is how we live.
- 10:32OK like that is. That's so true.
- 10:35Burnt bread is how we live. Wow.
- 10:39Y'all I've had, I've had a few days.
- 10:40OK? I can hear the baby screaming in
- 10:42the background. Sophia's going to be bumping up
- 10:44here soon talking about her. Aunties are on here and I'm just
- 10:48like getting by with Pixie dust prayers at this point.
- 10:50So we're going to do this for as long as we can until I get
- 10:54interrupted. Oh.
- 10:55You crack me up, Pixie. I have so many questions though,
- 10:58and I and and Rachel, I had sent you those questions and Kristen,
- 11:01if you want to like hit the ground because I'm going to
- 11:03interject with like my own jam. Now I'm still on Bali.
- 11:08I'm still like, what? I'm still like, what an amazing
- 11:11experience that must have been like, I think you know, and just
- 11:14take like you recognize that this isn't serving me.
- 11:18I'm walking away from this and I'm going to walk down this
- 11:21path. No water, no matter what it cost
- 11:23me. But my mental health is worth
- 11:25more than all this other stuff behind me.
- 11:28So I'm really, I just, I'm really taking it like I don't
- 11:31want, I don't want this to come off the wrong way, but I think
- 11:33that sounds really amazing that you recognize in yourself this
- 11:36is what you need to do to take care of yourself.
- 11:38Because this American Society right now, we're everybody's
- 11:41just in a big damn hurry to get to the next thing.
- 11:44We are not taking not only we're not taking care of ourselves
- 11:47individual, we are not taking care of each other as a
- 11:49community. And I think that's just, it's
- 11:52terrible. And we need to be, we need to be
- 11:55doing that is looking out for each other, helping each other,
- 11:58support each other because we can't.
- 11:59No one person can do it by themselves.
- 12:01And that's one of the, I think I, the community Rachel has, has
- 12:06created the community we have with Arbonne is, is and the
- 12:11community we have in the military, Chris is very niche,
- 12:15right? And I feel like your niche will
- 12:19look out for you. But God forbid we're walking
- 12:21through Target and you go to try to interject to help somebody
- 12:25with something. Even if they drop something
- 12:27behind them, their whatever their credit card, their phone,
- 12:30you go give it to them. Like 95% of the time people get
- 12:33mad that you intruded on their everyday life.
- 12:36You can't even look out for people anymore.
- 12:37It's it's rare that people are like, Oh my God, thank you.
- 12:40We're like, it takes a village to raise a kid, right?
- 12:43And nobody wants to interject in the kids.
- 12:45Even if they think they're being stolen, they'll just stare and
- 12:48like gawk and film it and then post it on YouTube later.
- 12:52And but nobody wants to help us with our mental health.
- 12:55That's creating this crisis. Yeah, it's so interesting.
- 12:59That's why I love what you're doing because I feel like this
- 13:02goes beyond mindful meditation and yoga.
- 13:04It's combining the two. It's recognizing the things that
- 13:07you recognize, teaching others to recognize those things in
- 13:10themselves and you're pouring into them.
- 13:13But you're still able to stop and pour back into yourself so
- 13:16you can give your clients the best version of you, which is
- 13:19just, I'm tired as hell. I don't have an any to do that,
- 13:23but I am like blown away at your capabilities to do that.
- 13:28And I and I don't want to say I envy it because that's such a
- 13:30bad word, but like I get some give me a word, I'm fried.
- 13:34I'm like. You're over simulated.
- 13:37I'm so over simulated, but I, I, I love that you can do that
- 13:42because some of us, most people can't.
- 13:45We have a deep appreciation for the the light that she's
- 13:48cultivating and. She you.
- 13:50Know and she wants to help others just like we got into
- 13:53nursing because we wanted to help others.
- 13:54But healthcare has morphed into something that I don't know what
- 13:59it is, not what I what I first got into and the struggle is
- 14:02real. And what we're going to take a
- 14:04break and we're going to come back and talk more about health
- 14:08and Wellness and self-care. And we're back and before the
- 17:23break we were talking with Rachel about her health and
- 17:27Wellness in her yoga journey and she went to Bali to for some
- 17:31training, which was amazing, I'm sure.
- 17:34And So what? Is there a specific type of yoga
- 17:38that you are trained in? Practice All of the above.
- 17:43Yes, so we were really trained on hatha yoga and vinyasa yoga,
- 17:48and we learned a little bit of Ashtanga in the last week, but
- 17:51that's completely separate. So I primarily teach and
- 17:54personally take vinyasa yoga. Vinyasa is all about moving with
- 17:58your breath, so each movement is paired with breath, so you're
- 18:01either inhaling or exhaling. And I particularly love this
- 18:05form of movement because it's very fluid.
- 18:08I feel like when we move, it's a lot easier for us to get out of
- 18:11our mind and into our body. We're concentrating on moving
- 18:14our body and moving our breath. It doesn't give our monkey mind
- 18:17a whole lot of time to think about that To Do List.
- 18:19I love that phrase. I don't mean to cut you off.
- 18:22I took one of Rachel's classes I virtually because obviously I
- 18:25can't bebop to Florida whenever I want, but I didn't virtually
- 18:29and it on a Monday. She offers them on Mondays and
- 18:32you can book them throughout Rachel.
- 18:33You can plug yourself in in a minute, but like she used that
- 18:36term and it threw me off for a hot minute at the beginning.
- 18:39I'm like a what? And all of a sudden it all made
- 18:41sense because I'm like, Oh my God, my brain is a circus and
- 18:44there are monkeys kind of running it.
- 18:46And I know that's not like, but that's how I that's how I
- 18:49associate it now. Sure, I too, I've got them up
- 18:52there too. I think we all do.
- 18:54We live in on this fast-paced society and it is so much easier
- 18:57for us to speed up and keep sprinting than it is to slow
- 19:01down. And that's another reason I love
- 19:03vinyasa, because you can't speed it up or you can slow it down.
- 19:06So I like to do a little bit more of a slow flow.
- 19:08I don't do it more on like a super fast pace or power.
- 19:11I really try to keep it authentic to yoga and talk about
- 19:15the mind connection, the spirit connection and not so much view
- 19:18it as a workout. So I would say Vinyasa is pretty
- 19:21much my go to. Yeah, I agree.
- 19:24I am inconsistently done yoga over the last like probably 10
- 19:29to 15 years and I know that it's your practice is best when you
- 19:35are staying consistent with it. Consistency definitely does help
- 19:41but I think any time that you show up on the mat you're doing
- 19:44yourself a service and I really love the 10 minute rule.
- 19:47I apply this to any form of movement or just honestly like
- 19:51anything that I don't really want to do I give myself 10
- 19:54minutes and I say cuz I think the hardest part is starting
- 19:57whenever people show up to the mat I'm like Congrats you made
- 19:59it to the mat. That's the hardest part.
- 20:01So I like the 10 minute rule, so I give myself permission to
- 20:05leave something after 10 minutes.
- 20:07So for. Example, don't really do this in
- 20:09yoga so much because I don't really feel a lot of resistance
- 20:11showing up to the mat. But for a typical workout, for
- 20:14example, where I know that I'm going to be sweating, I know
- 20:16it's going to be really hard. I say just show up for 10
- 20:18minutes and if you're still hating it, go ahead and leave.
- 20:21And I think I've only left a workout once or twice ever since
- 20:24I started doing this like five years ago.
- 20:26Because truly, once you start going and move your body, it's
- 20:30so much easier to start. So that's kind of my sense on
- 20:33consistency. Just about 10 minutes and 10
- 20:35minutes, even if you stop, is better than 0.
- 20:38Yeah, I think people don't realize how great yoga is for
- 20:43your body because I know I think I want to say was at least 10
- 20:47years ago and maybe a little bit more than that.
- 20:48They were actually training like NFL players and elite athletes
- 20:53and yoga because they were what they were finding.
- 20:56The more flexible you are, the faster you are, which is what a
- 20:59lot of athletes want. And the more flexible you are,
- 21:01the less injuries that you get as well.
- 21:04So I know my aging brain and body is telling me like, OK, get
- 21:07back into yoga, woman. I.
- 21:12Know I need to get back into it for sure, but there's so many
- 21:16health benefits to doing yoga, not just the mental piece of it,
- 21:20but the physical piece of it as well.
- 21:21It just the you know, the the flexibility and the joint motion
- 21:26and it's really good for women and you can start at any age.
- 21:29I know they're even doing it for kids with like ADD like in the
- 21:32schools and stuff. So there's so many health
- 21:35benefits to doing yoga. I don't think the three of us
- 21:38could probably say it here enough for everybody listening.
- 21:40To me, yeah, fine. You, you bring that up because I
- 21:43actually reached out to Rachel last week, I think, or my days
- 21:46are blurred. But I was like, hey, can you
- 21:48please put a yoga thing together for Soph?
- 21:50Because she needs like a, she really wants to do yoga.
- 21:52And I'm like, why would I pay somebody on YouTube when I have
- 21:57Rachel who I trust to be with my daughter to do a class to help
- 22:00her wind down. And then you know, the mindful
- 22:02meditation part Cuz so it's like she thinks she knows everything
- 22:05cuz she's a 5 year old going on 25, you know, So she's like, I'm
- 22:10like, OK, that's what I do. It's so cute.
- 22:14I love that. Yeah.
- 22:15I think yoga truly is for anyone and everyone, especially kids.
- 22:18It's so great for them to start young.
- 22:20I've taught a few kids classes and I love to incorporate animal
- 22:23themes. I think that really taught them
- 22:25in and it just helps them to remember, you know, like coming
- 22:29to a starfish pose or you know, like something like an elephant
- 22:32raising your hand. So drawing on that.
- 22:35But I've also done some cherry yoga for people that are older.
- 22:39So, you know, it would be great for everyone.
- 22:42And like you said, there's a lot of different aspects to being
- 22:45like physically fit and it's great if you can lift a bunch of
- 22:48weight, but what if you can't tie your shoes?
- 22:51That's like the mobility and the flexibility portion.
- 22:53And that's where yoga really comes in.
- 22:55Yes, you can absolutely build strength with yoga.
- 22:57Doing those Chaturangas, I can now do push ups and that's from
- 23:00the yoga there. But I think even more important
- 23:04is being able to bend down, not being in pain.
- 23:06That's a really big working through the body.
- 23:09I mean, even myself, I find I'm only 28, but I feel like I get
- 23:14stiff after a day or two. So they say like if you don't
- 23:17use it, you lose it. So just stay in.
- 23:19And another thing is it doesn't always have to be that intense.
- 23:22I love to remind people that you don't need to be doing the
- 23:25headstand or doing the craziest pose to get benefits.
- 23:28Like they say that yoga is not about touching your toes.
- 23:30It's about what you learn on the way down.
- 23:33And I think that's a really beautiful way to describe it and
- 23:35remind it because yes, you're touching your toes and getting
- 23:37that benefit, but it's also how are you talking to yourself when
- 23:40you're doing that? Are you speaking to yourself
- 23:42kindly? Are you saying like, oh, like
- 23:44this was so much easier five years ago?
- 23:46It's like that type of thing that makes yoga different than
- 23:49versus is just stretching. So you would think that.
- 23:52So in in in your opinion then consistency is totally better
- 23:57and Trump's intensity of it. For sure, yeah.
- 24:00I think with most things, yeah. Because, you know, if you go,
- 24:03let's say, to your local studio, you get like the unlimited two
- 24:06weeks and, you know, you go as much as you can and then you
- 24:09never go again. That's not really helping you
- 24:11longevity wise. So I think consistency, you
- 24:14can't see because I'm blocking the camera, but I actually have
- 24:16my yoga mat rolled out behind me on the ground just as a reminder
- 24:19manager for myself to just step on the map.
- 24:21Doesn't have to be long. Maybe it's just a little
- 24:23forward, fold a child's pose, but just doing something a
- 24:27little bit. It's like anything like when
- 24:28you're working your business, when you're trying to make
- 24:30progress training for a marathon.
- 24:31I think consistency always wins. I think, I mean, I agree with
- 24:35you 100% of the consistency. It's just interesting when you
- 24:38bring it up in terms of this topic, right?
- 24:40Because everyone thinks go big, go home.
- 24:42Yeah. And that's that's rarely
- 24:45actually always the case. And when you're getting started,
- 24:48at least for sure, I will say that you really it it struck A
- 24:53chord when you were like, but can you tie your shoes?
- 24:57Because Chris and I mean Rachel, you saw a different breed.
- 25:00We we know Chris, did I see you forever?
- 25:03She's done kids, she's done everything.
- 25:04And like, you know, bedside nurse for you know, I'm not
- 25:08going to say your age first time.
- 25:11So, but like, and then me from the, you know, ERICU and then
- 25:15pack you like, you know, many patients we've had that can't
- 25:19even put their shoes on without like an assisted device.
- 25:22And it's like that, like we're getting these patients heavy.
- 25:26And by heavy, I mean physically heavy and also chronically
- 25:29heavy. And it's, it's like, where was
- 25:32the preventive medicine? There isn't any, let's be
- 25:34honest, right? And I feel like what you're
- 25:37doing, I know some people won't say it's preventive medicine,
- 25:41but it's preventive for sure #1 and it's preventive healthcare.
- 25:45Yes, I agree. And it pisses me off that people
- 25:48don't utilize holistic approaches more and that
- 25:51insurance companies, I don't know if that was a word.
- 25:54I just like insurance companies. There we go like Foo Foo it.
- 26:00Like why do I have to pay more for a chiropractor or for yoga
- 26:03instructor or for needling? Like I get dry needling for my
- 26:07entry on deployment. I go get PT and dry needling and
- 26:10STEM all the time. Why is that not covered?
- 26:14I mean, thank God I go to the VA, but there's people that
- 26:15that's not the case. Yeah, it's backwards.
- 26:18It's backwards for sure. And I think it comes down to the
- 26:21greedy people at the top wanting to make a profit.
- 26:23Unfortunately, they don't make a lot of money off healthy people,
- 26:26but I, yeah, I think that's really where I try to come into
- 26:31play. And I try to always share
- 26:32throughout my yoga practice or the classes that I teach, not
- 26:35only, you know, what we're doing on the mat now, but how you can
- 26:38then translate this to off of the mat.
- 26:40So talking about like how if we're working really hard
- 26:42through our lower body, remember to relax the upper body.
- 26:45And talking about how if you're working really hard at work,
- 26:48remember, keep relaxing that upper body.
- 26:50Don't let the creep up. So I think that there's just
- 26:54such a huge opportunity where people need to learn more about
- 26:57this. What?
- 26:59Would be in your. Oh, go ahead, Chris.
- 27:01Bring it like bringing an awareness to your body and where
- 27:03you are, like, you know, in relationship to the environment
- 27:06around you. And it's kind of like, you know,
- 27:08in the military, like, you know, and we create that muscle
- 27:11memory, like how you practice, it's how you're going to
- 27:13perform. And, you know, I kind of made,
- 27:15you know, I kind of make it made a joke out of it.
- 27:17Like when I was getting ready to deploy, they keep putting me in
- 27:20these, you know, up armored vehicles and flipping the damn
- 27:23things over. And, you know, I was in the
- 27:26vehicle with all the gear on and and they've I they stopped us
- 27:29upside down and the lumbar pad to the Polper vest got stuck
- 27:34behind the seat that I was sitting in.
- 27:37So when I unclicked like the harness, I was actually dangling
- 27:42like a turtle because even though the straps were released,
- 27:45I was stuck. But it was just luck that I
- 27:48have, you know, am flexible enough that I was able to bend
- 27:51myself in half and put my feet on the roof of this thing and
- 27:54kind of like pop my booty out to get myself down and out.
- 27:59But like simple things like that, you know, in reality, like
- 28:05I wound up getting in a car accident several years after
- 28:07that. And it was just sheer, you know,
- 28:10because I'm flexible and my brain like muscle memory just
- 28:13kind of knew what to do from the rollover and the, the
- 28:16flexibility. Like I got like sprained my
- 28:19whole body head to toe, but I had no major injuries.
- 28:22Like we have people, you know, you could trip and fall over
- 28:24your shoelaces because they're on tight or going up and down
- 28:27steps. And so maintaining that mobility
- 28:30and that, like your awareness of your body is really important as
- 28:34we age from, you know, little kids all the way on up.
- 28:37I mean, how's your stability? Absolutely.
- 28:40Yeah. So Rachel, what would be like
- 28:43your go to self-care recommendation then?
- 28:47So I think nature is super important.
- 28:49So I think that we forget that we are nature and we get so
- 28:53disconnected from it because we spend our time inside and not
- 28:57enough time outside. So go to self-care definitely
- 29:00involves fresh air and then breathing, of course, that's
- 29:03such a big part of yoga, but so often we tend to breathe really
- 29:07fast and very shallow. So I would say getting out into
- 29:11nature if possible, taking deep breaths.
- 29:14If you're able to do some yoga, that's obviously one of my
- 29:17favorite self-care and making it a little ritual for yourself.
- 29:20I find it's really fun to add a little bit of essential oils,
- 29:23maybe light a nice soy non-toxic candle and just doing something
- 29:26that calms you down and feels good.
- 29:29Something that feels simple enough that you could repeat it.
- 29:32I think sometimes we think of self-care and we go overboard
- 29:35and it's really great that one time, but it's not sustainable.
- 29:38We're not able to do these elaborate things.
- 29:40So sometimes the best self-care is just taking a break, stepping
- 29:44outside, taking a nice like deep good morning stress, big inhale
- 29:48and then exhale. Really like releasing and
- 29:50telling yourself that you're releasing is just so simple, but
- 29:54it really can make a big difference.
- 29:58Yeah, I don't have people think it's like I got to go to the
- 30:03gym. Like you said, you have so much
- 30:04stuff that isn't sustainable, not that the gym is not.
- 30:07The gym is sustainable if you're doing it within reason, right?
- 30:09Like, but you're right. And then when life happens and
- 30:12throws A curveball at you and jacks up your schedule.
- 30:16Yeah. You forget that you can go back
- 30:18to little things like going in bare feet outside to ground
- 30:20yourself and stretch. I mean, I don't get the morning
- 30:22sun the way you guys do, but the choice I made has not been to go
- 30:27to Florida yet. It's coming, but when it does, I
- 30:29will have that ability. Yes, exactly.
- 30:33Just little things like that and like that's one of the other
- 30:35reasons I love yoga and find it so accessible because you don't
- 30:38even need a mat, you just need a space to put body.
- 30:41You don't need to drive to a gym, you don't need this
- 30:44equipment, you don't need anything fancy.
- 30:46That's why I try to offer the online yoga to make it
- 30:48accessible to people. Hopefully soon I'll have some
- 30:51YouTube videos so that it's on demand.
- 30:53We don't need to wait for time, but I think that's one of the
- 30:56reasons I really love yoga, because there's not so many
- 30:59barriers to accessing it. So what would be, how do I word
- 31:04this? Actually, I'm gonna pull from
- 31:06the questions that I had. So what's your yoga style then?
- 31:10In three words. So I would say welcoming for the
- 31:14first word because I really want everyone to feel welcome.
- 31:17I don't really have like a niche of the type of, you know,
- 31:20students that I cater towards. So very welcoming.
- 31:23I accept anybody that's showing up on their mat.
- 31:26I'd say empowering because I want you to not be disappointed
- 31:29at your body or judging your body.
- 31:31I want you to approach it with a sense of gratitude for your body
- 31:35and realize how strong and capable you are.
- 31:37So when you leave the time on your mat, you feel good, you
- 31:40feel empowered that you can do hard things.
- 31:42And then I would say adaptive. I mean, I've only been teaching
- 31:45for about a year, so things are still changing.
- 31:48I'm learning my style. So I don't really have, I mean,
- 31:51I definitely do have a style, but nothing that's 100% concrete
- 31:55that I wouldn't be willing to change.
- 31:57So I would say like adaptive or flexible because the more that I
- 32:01learn and grow in my own practice and in my own life, I'm
- 32:04able to then better my teaching. I love it.
- 32:08That's awesome. Yeah, and the empower, like
- 32:10Kristen, I'm always talking about how not enough women and
- 32:14Rachel, we've had this discussion.
- 32:16Not enough women empower each other.
- 32:18We're bringing each other down. And you've seen my
- 32:20conversations, Rachel. I'm always trying to lift
- 32:22someone's crown. Because what does it benefit to
- 32:25tear down another freaking human?
- 32:27Being I want abundance. I do not.
- 32:29Understand that like if you're a total a hole and you come at me,
- 32:32I'm going to probably match your energy.
- 32:34I'm just going to be real, but I'm not going to tear you down
- 32:38and I'm not going to definitely not do it for shits and giggles.
- 32:42Yeah. I don't get.
- 32:44It that there's enough for everyone.
- 32:46We can all have enough success, enough money, friends, fame,
- 32:49power, calmness, you know, whatever you're after, there's
- 32:53enough for all of us. And there's never a need to
- 32:56criticize your neighbor to compare.
- 32:58I love to tell people, stay within the four corners of your
- 33:00mat. It doesn't matter if Susie's
- 33:02next to you doing the headstand. It doesn't take away from your
- 33:05practice. You don't.
- 33:06Stay in your lane. Exactly.
- 33:07Stay in your lane, stay on your mat.
- 33:10Yeah, I was never a fan of the headstand.
- 33:12I'd never like, felt comfortable doing it.
- 33:14I I never liked the way my head felt and my neck felt and
- 33:18something that that's. All over.
- 33:21But that's one of them that I'm like.
- 33:23And that's OK. There's so many yogis and
- 33:25amazing yoga teachers that I look up to.
- 33:28They don't do headstands. Doesn't make you any more.
- 33:30It doesn't make you any less. Again, yoga's really not about
- 33:33the poses. I think that's a really big
- 33:35misconception. That was something I wanted to
- 33:38talk to you about, a misconception.
- 33:39OK all. Right.
- 33:40So it's about coming back to yourself.
- 33:42And traditionally the yoga poses were really used to kind of move
- 33:47around energy. So that way you could get out of
- 33:49your mind and into your body to prepare for shavasana and then
- 33:53that meditation. Because the whole point of yoga
- 33:56is enlighten, enlightenment and coming back to yourself and
- 33:59really knowing yourself. So the yoga poses that we do are
- 34:02then really in preparation for you then to steal your mind.
- 34:06Because if I were to say, all right, guys like let's meditate
- 34:09now, I know our monkey minds would be all over the place.
- 34:12Versus if we do a yoga flow for 60 minutes and we move around
- 34:15that energy, we find some stillness.
- 34:17By the time we come to Shavasana and we do that meditation, it's
- 34:20probably going to be easier for you to find some stillness in
- 34:23your mind. It may not be perfect, It
- 34:25doesn't need to be perfect, but in theory and an application it
- 34:28does tend to be easier. I will say I I mean, Chris, can
- 34:32you I don't have I'm not on the right link today.
- 34:34Chris, can you plug in her her Instagram handle for Rachel
- 34:39Wellness, Rachel, Rachel, Rachel Wellness, Rachel farmer
- 34:43Wellness. What one of those words
- 34:46together, but she Rachel, can you or Rachel might be able to
- 34:49type in. I can't type in anything on the
- 34:50link I'm on. Don't.
- 34:52Worry, don't sweat it, we're going to go to a quick
- 34:54commercial break and we're going to talk more about health and
- 34:56Wellness and. Yoga sounds good.
- 38:05Me. Are we dead?
- 38:07And in the chat, I have posted Rachel, Rachel's Instagram,
- 38:11Rachel Farmer Wellness on Instagram and her website
- 38:14rachelfarmerwellness.com. If you want any further
- 38:18information or support from Miss Rachel, I'm I'm in.
- 38:22I want. Emails and I love, love getting
- 38:28I know we talked about when you first started doing them and I'm
- 38:31hoping you're not feeling a composter syndrome doing them
- 38:34now, but like I looked for it so much.
- 38:36I was super pregnant when she started coming out with them and
- 38:38I was like, I just need a freaking shining light for the
- 38:40love of God. And because I was in so much
- 38:43pain pregnant and so large and like, and when you started
- 38:49coming out them, I was like, Oh my God, this is so nice to read
- 38:51because it's not any, it's no, there's no stress in it.
- 38:56It's not like crap you're seeing on the news.
- 38:58It's nothing to do with work. It's a, you can even read on the
- 39:01toilet away from your children if you have it, you know what I
- 39:03mean? And it's like a nice group cause
- 39:04your, your husbands and men are always on the toilet doing
- 39:07something. So like, what's up?
- 39:08What else do? So like it's, it's, I love your,
- 39:13I know they're more than monthly.
- 39:14At least I feel like they're more than.
- 39:15Monthly. Yeah, they're bi.
- 39:16Weekly I try to get. That I feel like I'm getting
- 39:18them more than that. It's awesome.
- 39:21So she has a subscription to that.
- 39:22I highly recommend you guys if you want a little sunlight in
- 39:26your e-mail box and not spam. Thank you.
- 39:29Yeah, just bi weekly and I share what classes I have coming up.
- 39:32I try to do a mantra. Usually 2 mantras is bi weekly.
- 39:36So mantra for like 2 weeks. I share some different health
- 39:39tips, maybe something about the moon, horoscopes, just providing
- 39:42some value. So they're not a very long read.
- 39:45But if you go to my website and you're just on it for more than
- 39:47two seconds, a little pop up box will come up and ask if you want
- 39:50to subscribe. So you can do that and would
- 39:53definitely love to have you on that.
- 39:54That's awesome. 2 questions I want to pick your brain at
- 39:57because we went to break right before that when my mind was
- 40:00going to hell in a handbasket. I wanted to ask if you can
- 40:05visualize monkeys. They're scrambling the eggs.
- 40:07OK, this is your this is your brain.
- 40:10This is your brain on drugs. But I don't take any drugs.
- 40:15So you brought up making mistakes like the mat is kind of
- 40:18like a judgement free zone. Feel empowered.
- 40:21I remember the first time I saw you do yoga on a mat, you were
- 40:23on your patio in Florida and your your caption was about
- 40:27like, it's OK to make mistakes and fall and slip.
- 40:30And I always felt so insecure going to yoga classes 'cause I'm
- 40:35like, I'm going to lose my balance.
- 40:36I have to do certain things modified.
- 40:37We've discussed this. I have certain things I can't do
- 40:39because I have an injury. And then when I was pregnant, at
- 40:43hello, when I was pregnant, she flipped.
- 40:47That's my daughter. She flipped like part of my
- 40:49muscle. And like, so we discussed all
- 40:52that. When I saw you slip on the mat
- 40:54and like fall and then post it, I was like Oh my God like.
- 40:59She's just like us. Like I can't tell you it makes
- 41:02you fat. Someone just said hello.
- 41:04Hello young lady. Professionals mess up.
- 41:08And the fact that it's OK to be human because humans mess up you
- 41:13made it so relatable isn't even the right word.
- 41:18You it just people need to see that.
- 41:21It was normal, that's all. Yeah, it was like, Oh my God,
- 41:24I'm not doing it wrong. For sure.
- 41:26And it's the least like when I took your class, it was the
- 41:28least judge mental class. I and I love yoga and when I can
- 41:31I go to a class, but I can't be consistent.
- 41:33I got a baby on the boob and somebody else trying to climb in
- 41:36my uterus and so sorry. Is this like it?
- 41:41Just makes me laugh every time you say baby's on the boom.
- 41:45Baby's on the boom. I know, my favorite saying of
- 41:46yours. I'm so real.
- 41:50But like I've never felt less judged, more empowered and more
- 41:55capable. So if anyone is looking for
- 41:57someone like you're not physically there holding my
- 41:59hand. And that would be weird during
- 42:01yoga if you were right. But like if anybody is looking
- 42:03for everything you've ever not realized you needed, but
- 42:09actually did need in a in a coach, whether it's yoga,
- 42:14mindfulness, even health, I like you feel.
- 42:17I feel like you're the person because you are the least judge
- 42:19mental person I know. And if you were still in
- 42:21healthcare, you would be the provider I wanted.
- 42:24Thank you. So I just have to say that.
- 42:26So like making mistakes, you make human look good, so don't
- 42:30stop. And my second question has
- 42:33evaded me, so let's keep it moving.
- 42:35Oh, I was going to ask, what's your favorite yoga pose, Rachel?
- 42:39Oh, that's a really hard one. I'd probably say Warrior 2.
- 42:43I really like that one. So that's where you have a
- 42:44really deep bend in the front knee, micro bend in the back
- 42:47knee. Your arms are stretching in
- 42:48equal opposite directions. You're gazing through that third
- 42:51middle finger. I feel like I just feel very
- 42:53strong in it and it's a pose that makes me feel balanced.
- 42:56I feel like it's working on cool, poor stability.
- 42:59It's not super fancy, there's not a ton of moving parts, but
- 43:02it's just a good staple that it feels good.
- 43:05I think that it makes other people feel good.
- 43:07I can kind of feel that energy when people are in that strong
- 43:10warrior pose. And one of my favorite mantras
- 43:13is I can do hard things, and I feel like it just into that a
- 43:16lot. I love that, Chris.
- 43:18I feel like we've said that and didn't realize we're probably
- 43:20doing our own little affirmation in that, like, yeah, and.
- 43:24People don't realize, you know, that warrior pose, like all the
- 43:27warrior poses like you, like if you look at it just a quick
- 43:30glance, you're like, oh, yeah, I could do that.
- 43:31And then trying to get into it and out of it, like like I've
- 43:34been in that post and just kind of like completely lost my
- 43:37balance. For sure, yeah, it's a great
- 43:39pose to build on. Started to play around and I
- 43:42lost my focus. Yeah, exactly.
- 43:45It's one of the your monkey brain.
- 43:47Yeah. It looks, you know, it looks
- 43:49fairly simple. And I feel like sometimes people
- 43:51view yoga and they're, you know, they think it looks simple, but
- 43:54when you're actually doing it, it's very humbling because you
- 43:57don't realize how much course ability is needed, especially
- 44:00when it comes to balancing poses.
- 44:02People are always embarrassed that they can't balance.
- 44:04And I have to ask them. I'm like, well, are you a
- 44:06Flamingo? Do you balance on one leg every
- 44:09day? No, you don't.
- 44:10So why would this be something that you're good at?
- 44:12You know, it's something like anything.
- 44:13It just takes practice. So why would you expect yourself
- 44:16to show up on the mat and be able to make these crazy shapes
- 44:20if you don't make these crazy shapes in day-to-day life?
- 44:22Like it's not necessarily supposed to be easy.
- 44:25Right, but you can do hard things.
- 44:27Agree with me, get it, get on the mat and just maintain the
- 44:30focus and that course ability. We use it in so many things and
- 44:36I'm Full disclosure, I fell off my paddle board this weekend.
- 44:40Is that what the puzzles got? Yeah, I just fell off the pad.
- 44:44I don't. I must have just lost focus.
- 44:46I wasn't paying attention and I just my husband's like, how did
- 44:49you fall off? I'm like, honestly, I don't even
- 44:51know. Like they were jet skis were
- 44:53coming around and the boats creating like little swells,
- 44:56like nothing major. And I just must not have been
- 44:59like adjusting paying attention core and just fell over.
- 45:03Lost my favorite freaking hat too.
- 45:05I'm. Oh no.
- 45:08But yeah, like I, you need that core for so many things and you
- 45:13need to quiet the mind. And that's the whole point of
- 45:16being out on the water is to quiet your mind.
- 45:18And clearly the monkeys were out of control, even out of the
- 45:21water. I will say yoga really does help
- 45:24with core. Like even PT pushes it right.
- 45:27Like my husband, bless his freaking heart, he needs to do
- 45:31way more core because even just his posture, he's got cervical
- 45:33and spinal stenosis and radiculopathy.
- 45:36I'm just putting out HIPAA. Like it ain't no one business.
- 45:41But like PT is like, you've got to engage your core.
- 45:45I'm like, you should do yoga with me.
- 45:47He he was like, OK, I'll stand behind you.
- 45:49And I'm like. That's not Halloween.
- 45:52Yeah. That's not like close, but not
- 45:55quite. I'm like, no.
- 45:57You just go to a class. I'll watch the kids.
- 45:59Thank you. OK, so give us yoga in a
- 46:02sentence, Rachel. So I actually, I have this
- 46:06quote, I don't want to mess it up, so I'm going to read it.
- 46:08So it says yoga is the journey of the self through the self to
- 46:12the self. And it's from the Bhagavad Gita,
- 46:15which is a ancient yogic text. And it's essentially touching on
- 46:20all the parts of yoga. So journey of the self through
- 46:24the self and to the self. So like I had mentioned, yoga is
- 46:27all about coming to the self and we do that through the physical
- 46:30body. So that's when we're moving
- 46:32through the self, but then there's that mental component of
- 46:35the self and then the spiritual and yoga actually means union of
- 46:38body, mind and soul. So I feel like that sentence
- 46:43about it being a journey is just a really great description of
- 46:45that because it's so much more than the physical poses.
- 46:48And I feel like if there's one thing I want to stress to the
- 46:50listeners today, it's not about the asana, that's the physical
- 46:53pose. It's about how you talk to
- 46:55yourself, how you show up on the mat, how you then carry that
- 46:59energy off of the mat. Like it's so much more than just
- 47:01holding your body in those positions because holding your
- 47:04in position, that can just be a stretch.
- 47:06That can be just be strength training, but it's really about
- 47:08the intention that you use behind it and the way that
- 47:11you're talking to yourself. Again, I think that's a really
- 47:13big one. Especially as women, we tend to
- 47:16criticize ourselves. We always want to take
- 47:18accountability and find how we can do better.
- 47:20But just working on accepting. I try to tell my students, you
- 47:23know, we don't need to label it good or bad.
- 47:25Doesn't need to be better or worse.
- 47:27It can just, it can just be. So I really again journey of the
- 47:31self through the self to the self.
- 47:34I love that. Yeah.
- 47:36Love it. It's like, deeper than what?
- 47:39Yeah. Yeah, it's a it's a lot deeper.
- 47:41Yeah, it's a lot deeper. Rabbit hole for a long time.
- 47:45So we were, we talked about how yoga is good for the the body
- 47:48and and spiritual and and just blending heart, body, mind,
- 47:53heart, soul. But yoga is also good for our
- 47:56sleep too, right? Yes, definitely.
- 48:00So I think one of the big things with yoga, especially coming
- 48:03back to the breath, is the nervous system regulation.
- 48:06We've talked a lot about how in our fast-paced society we're
- 48:09just disconnected from ourselves.
- 48:11So one of the big things is just bringing that awareness back to
- 48:15the body. And then once we have that
- 48:16awareness, knowing that maybe we're breathing a little bit
- 48:19fast, we're breathing a little bit shallow, when we're able to
- 48:21then tap into that parasympathetic or that rest and
- 48:24digest nervous system, it just calms everything down and it
- 48:28kind of recalibrates our body to do that.
- 48:30Our body needs to do, which then in turn is going to help our
- 48:33sleep. Because so much of the time, I
- 48:35don't know about you guys, but I'm assuming we're kind of
- 48:37razzled and frazzled and we're going all over the place.
- 48:40So when we're able to tap into that vagus nerve, that's the big
- 48:43nerve that we're using when we're working through those long
- 48:46extended exhales, that's really the key.
- 48:49That's going to help us to just maintain homeostasis in our
- 48:52body, kind of reset that circadian rhythm, and then help
- 48:55us to be able to sleep more soundly and stay asleep.
- 49:00OK so I'm going to play sleep into stress because people that
- 49:03are real stressed have trouble falling asleep right?
- 49:06And if y'all haven't picked up in the 45 minutes we've been
- 49:08together. OK hello So what is one thing
- 49:13that you would do? Like what do you or what do you
- 49:16do? Maybe not even recommend your
- 49:18clients, but either way, either or when?
- 49:20How do you ground yourself during those stressful times?
- 49:23Overwhelming over stimulated times?
- 49:25So I feel like it's a little bit cliche, but truly coming back to
- 49:29your breath because for example, if we're in the car, I'm down in
- 49:32South Florida where the drivers are terrifying.
- 49:35So I can't, you know, get into my child's pose and move my body
- 49:38when I'm in the car. But I always have access to my
- 49:41breath. So that's something that I love
- 49:43to come back to. Even when I was in clinic seeing
- 49:45patients and really stress, the breath is something that I would
- 49:48always come back to. And I really love sharing the
- 49:50478 breathing. So that's where you inhale for
- 49:53four, you hold for seven, and then you exhale for 8.
- 49:57So what you're doing is essentially doubling that
- 49:59exhale. And when we allow our exhales to
- 50:02be longer than the inhale, we're directly communicating with our
- 50:05body through our breath to turn on that rest and digest nervous
- 50:09system. It's activating that vagus
- 50:11nerve, which is the largest nerve, and that really helps to
- 50:13settle you down. If breathing isn't your thing,
- 50:16you can try humming, you can try whistling.
- 50:18These are all things that vibrate the nerve.
- 50:21But I really love breathing because just bringing awareness
- 50:23to the breath is going to translate in so, so many
- 50:26different scenarios. And maybe you're in a meeting,
- 50:28you can't really whistle or hum, but no one's going to notice if
- 50:31you're doing this breathing. It's something that's so
- 50:33inconspicuous, it's so silent, it's so sneaky, but it really
- 50:37isn't active. How do we not let our face know
- 50:40what we're doing? I've struggled with this my
- 50:42entire life. So if you guys know me, you know
- 50:45this is true. So my daughter's picked up like
- 50:50I'll be like, and I'm trying to breathe like I can't get into
- 50:54the yoga rat. I've got me and you have to have
- 50:55like a one-on-one, but like I'm trying to deep breathe so I
- 50:58don't get ghetto fab on her ass. And I'm like, and she's like,
- 51:03oh, you're frustrated. I'm sorry, mom.
- 51:05And I'm like, how do I not show you I'm frustrate?
- 51:07You're 5 like it's not your job to wear my frustration.
- 51:10I'm just overstimulated because we're doing all the things, you
- 51:13know? And how do you recommend people
- 51:15in a meeting, especially healthcare workers, when they're
- 51:17like, when they just want to knockout administrators because
- 51:20they don't get it, You know, what's your recommendation?
- 51:24So it's hard. That's something that I struggle
- 51:26with too. I'm also a very facially
- 51:28expressive person. I think, you know, we're not
- 51:31always able to create breaks for ourself.
- 51:34But if you can even, I mean, I wasn't really able to use the
- 51:37restroom at my old job and have time for that.
- 51:40Even if you just need to like turn into a corner like in
- 51:43between patients and just like breathe it that way so no one
- 51:46can see you. I don't think it's necessarily a
- 51:49bad thing in situations. You know, it's obviously
- 51:52depending on the context, like in a meeting, not the best, but
- 51:55it's OK to show your emotions and let other people know and
- 51:58just, you know, let them know like this is something I'm
- 52:00working with. It has nothing to do with you
- 52:02and establishing that boundary. And then just to also try to
- 52:06like contain things, I really like using kind of like a
- 52:10visualization of like a golden orb or some type of light around
- 52:14you that is kind of blocking out anything that you don't want.
- 52:18So I like to in that kind of envision it or imagine it as
- 52:22it's penetrable, meaning that you can still give and receive.
- 52:25You don't want to have this hard wall where you're blocking
- 52:28yourself out from, you know, human interaction, but you get
- 52:32to be selective kind of like as the gatekeeper.
- 52:34So if, you know, someone says something that you don't like,
- 52:36you know, the orb just deflects it, not even, you know, letting
- 52:39this come into my consciousness, I'm not going to hold on to this
- 52:42energy, this thought and just kind of imagining this kind of
- 52:45like imaginary shield. It kind of sound, it sounds a
- 52:48little silly, but it can be really helpful knowing that you
- 52:51have this boundary that's protecting your energy from
- 52:54someone else's because that's super important in healthcare
- 52:57especially. Yeah, because we.
- 52:58Pick up other things we end up carrying.
- 53:00So much that's not hers. So just realizing you.
- 53:04Know just. Even if it's in your mind, this
- 53:06just like thin veil, it can be light, it can be like, you know,
- 53:09the texture, gauze material, whatever, that just, it
- 53:12separates you just creating this defined boundary just kind of as
- 53:16a way in the mind to make it a little bit more concrete that
- 53:19you don't have to absorb everything.
- 53:21Because I think that especially as women healthcare workers, we
- 53:24want to take it all in and we want to fix it.
- 53:26But knowing that. Yeah, exactly.
- 53:29But kind of having that protective layer is something
- 53:32that I've taught some people to do and have had some good
- 53:34feedback with that. So I would love for you.
- 53:38To discuss, I don't know, I don't think you got I don't know
- 53:41what Anyway, I digress. I want you to told you scrambled
- 53:47eggs. I want you to tell the viewers
- 53:51everything you offer in your business, essentially including
- 53:54like I know you do group like leading groups in like
- 53:59corporations. So like or like girls night you
- 54:02could like you would host like a retreat for like all your
- 54:05girlfriends or whatever. So please discuss.
- 54:09I like the sound of that. That's why I wanted to.
- 54:12Bring it up. Yeah, so I do.
- 54:14All things health and Wellness so.
- 54:16Specifically in regards to yoga, I don't have a studio, so I
- 54:20either come to you at a location of your choice.
- 54:23So I do a lot of corporate yogas where I'll go into businesses.
- 54:26So if you work at a business, you can always ask your employer
- 54:30if they're open to having me come in and teach a yoga class
- 54:33or even a corporate health workshop.
- 54:35That's something that I've started to now do where I come
- 54:38in and provide tangible tips that are more than just stress
- 54:42less, eat better, move more. Like what does that even mean?
- 54:45So that's something that if you're working in a job, you can
- 54:48ask your employer to bring me in.
- 54:50I do group classes at different markets online.
- 54:54I do it in person. So I do birthday parties,
- 54:57bachelorettes, just partnering with different organizations.
- 55:03I'm looking to get into the international retreat space so
- 55:06coming January 2025 I will be hosting a retreat in Columbia.
- 55:10262026 Yes, sorry. 20/26/25 yes, for January 2026.
- 55:17So I'm really excited about that.
- 55:19So that will be the part of my kind of retreat adventure.
- 55:22But we're going to be planning some more retreats, hopefully
- 55:26international and domestic with some smaller scale, maybe some
- 55:29weekends where I incorporate some other practitioners,
- 55:32whether that's sound healing, meditation, massage therapy,
- 55:36just making it really holistic on different modalities.
- 55:39So that's pretty much everything yoga I do, privates, personal, I
- 55:44love to really create something for you.
- 55:47So if you're interested in sharing what you're looking for
- 55:50from the class, any particular injuries, I'm really good about
- 55:53working with that when it comes to more individual.
- 55:55And then with health coaching, I really like to bridge the gap
- 55:58between whatever you were told in your doctor's office to life.
- 56:02Because maybe you went to the doctor's and you got this
- 56:04diagnosis of let's say you know, like high blood pressure and you
- 56:09don't even know what that means. You don't know how to make it
- 56:12better or you don't understand really anything about the
- 56:15condition and how you got there. So my goal as a health coach is
- 56:18to, number one, help you understand your diagnosis #2
- 56:21help you realize that you are not your diagnosis and #3
- 56:25implement lifestyle changes to maybe even reverse that
- 56:28diagnosis. Obviously, I'm working through
- 56:31my health coaching credentials, so I can't provide any
- 56:33medication management or any diagnosis.
- 56:36I won't be using my PA license. But I'll be able to help you
- 56:39work through different goals of with your nutrition, with
- 56:43movement, with sleep, and really troubleshoot things.
- 56:45Because for example, I find that, you know, we go to the
- 56:48doctor, they say, are you eating well?
- 56:50You say yes, and then you get this diagnosis.
- 56:53And maybe you thought you were eating well, but you don't know
- 56:55how to read nutrition labels. Maybe the grocery store is too
- 56:58far away, so you have to order in bulk and your kids want
- 57:01something different. So these type of problems, I'm
- 57:03able to really work through them with you and help you to get to
- 57:07your goal in either yoga and in health coaching.
- 57:10I really love the philosophy that I am not the sage on the
- 57:14stage. I'm the guide on the side.
- 57:16Like I truly believe that it's you doing the work.
- 57:18You have the answers within you and I want to empower you to
- 57:22feel good because at the end of the day, like it's your life,
- 57:25it's your body. But I want to be there to
- 57:27support you, hold you accountable, and give you the
- 57:29tools and the resources that maybe we weren't accessible to
- 57:32you before. And I do think it's so
- 57:34important. How many?
- 57:35Times have have as a layperson and and and we've all seen it
- 57:39right left the doctor's office urgent care ER what have you and
- 57:43been like don't know what they just told me all the time all
- 57:47the time even. With my patients seeing them in
- 57:5015 minutes, I would give them a handout and they I'm sure they
- 57:53had no idea they'd walk out and not know.
- 57:54It's just not enough time and it takes a while for us to really
- 57:58understand things. And then we have to think about
- 58:01the questions that we have. So we're not going to understand
- 58:03things right off the bat and have all our questions.
- 58:05It takes some time. It takes the trial, the error.
- 58:08So I think that health coaches really fill in this unique gap
- 58:11and working through things and really troubleshooting.
- 58:14And I think I feel like we're. Like healthcare's become an
- 58:18assembly line, especially like surgery centers, urgent cares.
- 58:21You pass through, let's be efficient.
- 58:24But efficiency has turned into tasking and inhumane.
- 58:28Not inhumane, but like, heartless, not connected care.
- 58:31Yeah, it's not. You're thinking the humanity out
- 58:33of healthcare. Right, we're right.
- 58:36So. Yeah, I agree.
- 58:38And I think one of the other things that I.
- 58:40Really try to harp on is bio individuality.
- 58:42I know that there's so much information out there.
- 58:45We all have access attached to EPT Google, but information
- 58:49overload and what they say works for one person may not work for
- 58:52the other. My favorite example of this is
- 58:54nuts. Nuts are great because they've
- 58:56got a lot of fats in them. They've got vitamins, murals,
- 58:58fiber, all the things. But to the other person, they're
- 59:01allergic. Nuts can literally kill them.
- 59:03So when you're working with me as a health coach, I can help
- 59:06you distinguish what's actually right for you versus what the
- 59:09Internet says is right for everyone.
- 59:13Well, we've. Got about 45 seconds here.
- 59:16Left Rachel thank you so much for coming on tonight we're so
- 59:19happy to have you talking about thank you so much thank you for
