- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to Christian Parent Crazy World, the podcast that tackles
- 0:09Speaker 1: tough topics to help you be a godly parent in
- 0:12Speaker 1: an ungodly world. I am your host, Katherine Segers, and
- 0:17Speaker 1: in today's episode, we are going to tackle a very
- 0:19Speaker 1: honest and vulnerable question.
- 0:22Speaker 2: How can we teach our.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Kids to study the Bible when we don't feel confident
- 0:27Speaker 1: studying it ourselves? Yeah, you know, as parents, We want
- 0:31Speaker 1: our kids to know God's Word. We want them to
- 0:33Speaker 1: be able to turn to Scripture when they're struggling and
- 0:36Speaker 1: making decisions. But what if we really don't know how
- 0:40Speaker 1: to study the Bible ourselves? Maybe you spent years listening
- 0:43Speaker 1: to sermons, going to Bible studies, and reading your Bible,
- 0:47Speaker 1: but no one ever really taught you how to study
- 0:50Speaker 1: Scripture for yourself. And now you want your kids to
- 0:53Speaker 1: know God's Word, not just hear it in church, but
- 0:56Speaker 1: actually know how to open the Bible and discover truth
- 0:59Speaker 1: for themselves. But where do you even begin? Do you
- 1:03Speaker 1: have to be a Bible expert first? Well, today my
- 1:06Speaker 1: guest is going to give us a simple, practical way
- 1:10Speaker 1: to slow down, dig into Scripture, and learn how to
- 1:14Speaker 1: study God's Word. And then we can help our kids
- 1:17Speaker 1: do the same. That's the plan for this episode of
- 1:20Speaker 1: Christian Parent Crazy World. So, moms and dads, why is
- 1:32Speaker 1: it that so many of us have been in church
- 1:35Speaker 1: for much, if not all of our lives, and yet
- 1:38Speaker 1: we rarely hear someone actually teach us how to study
- 1:43Speaker 1: the Bible? Like, why is that? You know, we're told
- 1:48Speaker 1: this book is the foundation of our faith, and we're
- 1:50Speaker 1: encouraged to read it and to memorize it and to
- 1:52Speaker 1: meditate on it, to build our lives around it. But somehow,
- 1:56Speaker 1: we can spend years in Christian circles reading without ever
- 2:00Speaker 1: really learning the basic skills for digging into scripture and
- 2:05Speaker 1: understanding what we're reading. You know, it's kind of like
- 2:09Speaker 1: being handed a map and being told this will guide
- 2:12Speaker 1: you where you need to go, but no one ever
- 2:14Speaker 1: really shows you how to read the map.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I think that this may be one of the most
- 2:20Speaker 1: important skills we are failing to teach our kids. Maybe
- 2:23Speaker 1: we never learned it ourselves to not only know what
- 2:27Speaker 1: the Bible says, but how to open it, to explore it,
- 2:31Speaker 1: and to discover what God is saying to us through
- 2:34Speaker 1: his word. That is where today's guest comes in. Angie
- 2:38Speaker 1: Bauman is a Bible teacher, and she is the founder
- 2:42Speaker 1: of SteadyOn Ministries. She created this method that I think
- 2:46Speaker 1: personally is brilliant. It's called the Step-by-Step Bible Study Method.
- 2:50Speaker 1: It's a very simple approach to help us understand the
- 2:54Speaker 1: Word of God. And Angie is passionate about helping parents
- 2:58Speaker 1: give their kids practical tools to explore God's Word for themselves.
- 3:04Speaker 1: So how do we actually study the Bible and then
- 3:06Speaker 1: teach our kids to do the same? Yeah, that's what
- 3:09Speaker 1: we're going to talk about today. So with that said,
- 3:11Speaker 1: I will take you to my conversation. with Angie Bauman. Angie,
- 3:16Speaker 1: welcome to Christian Parent Crazy World. I am so excited
- 3:19Speaker 1: to have this conversation with you today.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Katherine, I can't wait to dig in. Thank you for
- 3:23Speaker 2: having me.
- 3:25Speaker 1: This is so awesome. I cannot wait for you to
- 3:28Speaker 1: share with my audience because I've been enjoying your step-by-step method.
- 3:32Speaker 2: It makes me so happy.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It's been producing just these wonderful conversations with God and
- 3:38Speaker 1: the Lord's just unpacking so much for me. But before
- 3:40Speaker 1: we get into all of that, why don't you just
- 3:43Speaker 1: tell us a little bit about yourself, tell us about
- 3:45Speaker 1: Study on Ministries and what led you to create the
- 3:49Speaker 1: step-by-step Bible study method.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Absolutely. So I am Angie Bauman, and I live in
- 3:55Speaker 2: Southern Illinois, and I've been married to Matt for 28 years.
- 3:59Speaker 2: And we have two kiddos. Alex is our older. He
- 4:02Speaker 2: is 22 and is in graduate school right now and
- 4:06Speaker 2: coaches men's basketball at the university level. And then my
- 4:11Speaker 2: younger son, Josh, is 16, almost 17, and he's a
- 4:14Speaker 2: junior in high school. And we're actually, I'm on the
- 4:17Speaker 2: road right now. I'm in a hotel room, but we're
- 4:20Speaker 2: making this work because he's actually, he's a huge golfer.
- 4:23Speaker 2: And we are in Bloomington, Illinois right now for the
- 4:26Speaker 2: Illinois High School Association State Golf Tournament. He's made it
- 4:30Speaker 2: to the state level. So we're super proud of Josh
- 4:32Speaker 2: and all that he's doing in golf. And Study on
- 4:35Speaker 2: Ministries is about nine years old. I've been in ministry
- 4:39Speaker 2: almost all my adult life. And the Lord called me
- 4:42Speaker 2: about nine years ago to start Steady On. Steady On
- 4:46Speaker 2: is anchored in Psalm 40 verse 2, which says, He
- 4:48Speaker 2: set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as
- 4:51Speaker 2: I walked along. And it is a ministry that is
- 4:54Speaker 2: dedicated to creating content to help people get in and
- 4:58Speaker 2: stay in their Bibles. And we do that from a
- 5:00Speaker 2: lot of different ways. We have a podcast and we
- 5:02Speaker 2: write Bible studies. We have an online community and we
- 5:04Speaker 2: do in-person events and But this step-by-step method that we're
- 5:07Speaker 2: going to talk about is just the heartbeat of all
- 5:09Speaker 2: of it.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Ah, I love that.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I love that.
- 5:12Speaker 1: So why do you think that so many Christians, especially
- 5:15Speaker 1: moms and women, feel a little insecure about studying the
- 5:19Speaker 1: Bible for themselves?
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I think a couple of things, Catherine. I think
- 5:23Speaker 2: that's just such a beautiful place to start. I think
- 5:26Speaker 2: part of it is because we lack mentors. I think
- 5:31Speaker 2: a lot of us lack mentors sometimes. I think we're
- 5:33Speaker 2: lonely and hungry for Christian mentorship and connection. I think
- 5:39Speaker 2: that's a variety of reasons. I think there's a lot
- 5:41Speaker 2: of distraction and there's a lot of busyness. And I
- 5:45Speaker 2: think older women are not reaching down to younger women,
- 5:49Speaker 2: but also younger women are not reaching up to older
- 5:51Speaker 2: women to really spend time in listening to someone who
- 5:57Speaker 2: has been journeying with Jesus longer than us and studying
- 5:59Speaker 2: the Bible longer than us and just to take the
- 6:01Speaker 2: time to help help teach us that. I think that's
- 6:05Speaker 2: part of it. I also think doing anything new is
- 6:08Speaker 2: just kind of vulnerable. And we tend to resist that,
- 6:11Speaker 2: you know? I mean, I don't know why we're quicker
- 6:15Speaker 2: to give ourselves grace. Like if we want to learn
- 6:17Speaker 2: an instrument or a language, or we want to advance
- 6:20Speaker 2: our cooking skills or something like that, like we do
- 6:22Speaker 2: some research and we we watch YouTube videos, or we
- 6:25Speaker 2: get a teacher, or we find a class or something,
- 6:29Speaker 2: and we figure out, we're like, okay. But even going
- 6:32Speaker 2: that first time, especially if you're trying to do something
- 6:34Speaker 2: on your own, it's just that vulnerable feeling of, I
- 6:36Speaker 2: don't want to look stupid. Everybody's already going to know
- 6:38Speaker 2: more than me, all those kind of feelings that come.
- 6:41Speaker 2: And somehow we bring that into our relationship with the
- 6:44Speaker 2: Lord too, and our relationship with Bible study. I should
- 6:46Speaker 2: probably already know this, or If I go to Bible
- 6:49Speaker 2: study and ask a question, they're going to be like,
- 6:51Speaker 2: I can't.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Believe you don't know that.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And you know, all the things. So I think that's,
- 6:55Speaker 2: there's probably more reasons, but I see, those are the
- 6:58Speaker 2: things that I see most often and hear most often.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Oh, that breaks my heart too, to think.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Of something. And I get it. We, we don't want
- 7:09Speaker 1: to look insecure. We don't want to, to look stupid.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I can remember. Oh, you just, you just brought to mind, um,
- 7:17Speaker 1: an encounter I had early on. It was years ago.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I was in a Sunday school class and there was
- 7:24Speaker 1: this young woman who was a beautiful young woman. Her
- 7:28Speaker 1: name was Tracy and she was in the class and
- 7:31Speaker 1: she never really spoke much. And honestly, this is kind
- 7:34Speaker 1: of my wheelhouse. I went to, you know, I've got,
- 7:36Speaker 1: you know, I went to a school that I minored
- 7:39Speaker 1: in Bible and I love conversations. And then I went
- 7:41Speaker 1: on to graduate school where at some graduate level, theology
- 7:44Speaker 1: classes and then Christian apologetics I started studying in graduate school.
- 7:48Speaker 1: And so I love this and I love to converse,
- 7:51Speaker 1: but not everybody feels comfortable with that. Like my husband
- 7:54Speaker 1: on the other end of the spectrum, he's like, please don't.
- 7:57Speaker 1: He's not really into all of those deep, heavy, meaty
- 8:00Speaker 1: conversations all the time and sometimes may feel some of
- 8:02Speaker 1: that insecurity. So there we are in this class. Tracy
- 8:05Speaker 1: rarely spoke up. And She started to say something one day.
- 8:11Speaker 1: And so we're all tuning in. Tracy never really speaks.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And she stumbled over words. And then she tried to
- 8:19Speaker 1: speak again. And she stumbled. And she tried to speak again.
- 8:22Speaker 1: It was like three times. And we were trying to
- 8:23Speaker 1: get enough out of her just to try to help
- 8:25Speaker 1: her along. And then it just got so quiet. And
- 8:29Speaker 1: she just looked at us and she said, I'm not
- 8:32Speaker 1: like you, all of you. I don't understand all the
- 8:38Speaker 1: things you're talking about. all the time. And I don't,
- 8:41Speaker 1: I can't make my words come out right. And I'm like,
- 8:45Speaker 1: my heart broke. And I think maybe a lot of
- 8:48Speaker 1: women in the audience feel that way when it comes
- 8:51Speaker 1: to some of these, they don't know the terminology. Like
- 8:53Speaker 1: just before the episode, you and I've studied a lot
- 8:56Speaker 1: and we're talking about terms that they may not know.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Another instance, I can remember I was in a women's
- 9:00Speaker 1: Bible study. One of the women in the Bible study
- 9:03Speaker 1: literally was an editor at Thomas Nelson, and it edited
- 9:07Speaker 1: my Bible, like the Life Application Bible. Like, we were
- 9:11Speaker 1: all trying to keep up with her. But we're like,
- 9:13Speaker 1: we would bandy about Bible references and just, well, you know,
- 9:17Speaker 1: Romans 8, 28, and, you know, John 14, 6, and all.
- 9:22Speaker 1: And this one woman came up to me afterwards, and
- 9:25Speaker 1: she's like, can I get together with you sometime and
- 9:28Speaker 1: have coffee? Because I don't know what you're talking about.
- 9:31Speaker 1: So what you said about the older women... is so
- 9:35Speaker 1: important because we need to slow down. Yeah. We need
- 9:38Speaker 1: to slow down so that women can feel like there's
- 9:42Speaker 1: an on-ramp. And those, like the Tracys of the world, wow,
- 9:47Speaker 1: did she ever teach me something that not everybody is
- 9:54Speaker 1: approaching it the same way. And there are those insecurities
- 9:57Speaker 1: out there. And you know what? I am positive. a
- 10:01Speaker 1: hundred percent positive that Tracy had things that we could
- 10:05Speaker 1: all learn from her perspective and her coming to the
- 10:09Speaker 1: scripture with her fresh eyes and that she, you know,
- 10:12Speaker 1: she felt that insecurity. So thank you for leaning into that.
- 10:17Speaker 1: And just, I'm personally convicted by that, that we need
- 10:21Speaker 1: to make sure that everybody's got an on-ramp and mamas
- 10:26Speaker 1: out there, women out there, and the husbands too, if
- 10:30Speaker 1: you feel insecure in this, you've got something very important
- 10:33Speaker 1: and powerful to offer from your fresh perspective of the
- 10:37Speaker 1: word that we need.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I think that's one of the reasons that the Lord
- 10:42Speaker 2: invited me to create a method because I think there's
- 10:44Speaker 2: some safety in the method. And once you're comfortable in
- 10:47Speaker 2: doing a method, you have just like maybe a little
- 10:50Speaker 2: bit of a safety net to where you aren't so
- 10:53Speaker 2: overwhelmed by the Bible's a big book, you know? And yeah.
- 10:58Speaker 2: And so I think that's one of the things that
- 11:01Speaker 2: helps us if we just have something like that to follow.
- 11:04Speaker 2: But one of the things that I try really hard
- 11:07Speaker 2: with the method is to do, it's about independent Bible studies.
- 11:11Speaker 2: So You don't have really very many answers that someone
- 11:14Speaker 2: else has found. It's a way to go into the
- 11:16Speaker 2: Bible and find answers that the Holy Spirit or find
- 11:20Speaker 2: discoveries that the Holy Spirit is bringing to you. Because
- 11:22Speaker 2: I always say pastors and Bible teachers are wonderful. Wonderful.
- 11:27Speaker 2: I'm so grateful for them. They have taught me so
- 11:29Speaker 2: much about the Bible and about Jesus. But pastors and
- 11:32Speaker 2: Bible teachers have a limitation because they can go into
- 11:35Speaker 2: the scripture and they can tell us what the Holy
- 11:37Speaker 2: Spirit said to them when they studied. but they cannot
- 11:40Speaker 2: tell us what the Holy Spirit says to us when
- 11:43Speaker 2: we study, right? And that's why it's so important for
- 11:46Speaker 2: us to have the skills to go into the word
- 11:48Speaker 2: on our own. And if you don't mind me telling
- 11:50Speaker 2: a story when you were talking about intimidation. So, and
- 11:53Speaker 2: when I was probably, I was early married. So I
- 11:55Speaker 2: was going to say I was in my early twenties
- 11:57Speaker 2: and I was invited for the very first time to
- 11:59Speaker 2: a precept class. And I was in precept, shout out
- 12:01Speaker 2: to precept. I was a precept student and then a
- 12:03Speaker 2: teacher for years and years and years. And the very
- 12:06Speaker 2: first class that I went to, we were going to
- 12:07Speaker 2: study Joshua. And I knew that, that you had to
- 12:11Speaker 2: take colored pencils and stuff and mark up the book
- 12:14Speaker 2: of the Bible that we were in. But I didn't
- 12:16Speaker 2: know they would give it to you on the first day.
- 12:19Speaker 2: And so I didn't want to look stupid. And so
- 12:21Speaker 2: I began to type out on my word processor at
- 12:25Speaker 2: the time, dating myself, my word processor, I began to
- 12:29Speaker 2: type out the book of Joshua. So I would have
- 12:32Speaker 2: what I needed on the first day of class. And
- 12:34Speaker 2: I would not look behind from the other ladies. And
- 12:38Speaker 2: I got it through, I got through like, you know,
- 12:39Speaker 2: eight chapters or something. I'm like, I'm never going to
- 12:41Speaker 2: get all this done. And so I went to class,
- 12:44Speaker 2: of course, they hand you all the things that you need,
- 12:47Speaker 2: but I didn't know that. But I just say that
- 12:49Speaker 2: because I think that's why I have a heart. for
- 12:51Speaker 2: the women that are kind of like, I just don't
- 12:54Speaker 2: know if I can do this, or I don't know
- 12:56Speaker 2: if I'll be accepted there or whatever. I'm like, you
- 12:59Speaker 2: do it, honey. You just keep taking one step at
- 13:02Speaker 2: a time because day after day after day, the Lord
- 13:05Speaker 2: will begin to teach you. And down the road, you'll
- 13:08Speaker 2: have a wealth of knowledge. And nothing replaces the time
- 13:12Speaker 2: that we will give him to teach us little things
- 13:16Speaker 2: at a time, right?
- 13:17Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah, so we can learn from what
- 13:20Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit teaches other people, but man, there's nothing
- 13:24Speaker 1: like when the Holy Spirit teaches you something that you
- 13:27Speaker 1: need for that season of your life. That's one of
- 13:30Speaker 1: the reasons I love Tuesdays so much because we teach,
- 13:32Speaker 1: I teach online and everybody that's done the step-by-step verse
- 13:35Speaker 1: of the week in the study on community that wants
- 13:37Speaker 1: to comes in and we study the step-by-step verse. And
- 13:41Speaker 1: it's so wonderful to have all these different boxes filled
- 13:43Speaker 1: with faces that have studied the verse and none of
- 13:47Speaker 1: us are, receiving exactly the same thing, right? So as
- 13:50Speaker 1: we go through the steps and we begin to share,
- 13:52Speaker 1: what did you find? Or what did you find?
- 13:54Speaker 2: And we find, you know, and then pop up here
- 13:56Speaker 2: and pop up here. And we're all like, we all
- 13:58Speaker 2: learned so much when we studied it. But then we
- 14:00Speaker 2: also learned so much by seeing how God is speaking
- 14:02Speaker 2: to us individually as well.
- 14:04Speaker 1: I love that. Before we actually get into the method, though,
- 14:07Speaker 1: I'm very curious. Why do you think it is that.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I've been in church all of my life. I've been to,
- 14:15Speaker 1: you know, undergraduate and graduate school. And yet there is very,
- 14:19Speaker 1: very little teaching on how to study scripture. They just
- 14:25Speaker 1: launch into actually studying scripture, but not really helping people
- 14:29Speaker 1: learn that on-ramp. How do we... This book is thousands
- 14:33Speaker 1: of years old, you know, and we... Why do you
- 14:37Speaker 1: think it is? I liken it to, I homeschool my kids,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and whether your kids are in public school or private
- 14:42Speaker 1: school or homeschool, they're learning trigonometry and advanced math and
- 14:47Speaker 1: calculus and physics, and yet... Many of them, if you're
- 14:51Speaker 1: not careful, can get out into the world with really
- 14:53Speaker 1: not knowing how to budget well. And the important things
- 14:58Speaker 1: to do with numbers are the things that we do
- 15:00Speaker 1: every day, like comparison shopping and understanding about interest rates
- 15:04Speaker 1: and compound interest and these things that actually affect my
- 15:07Speaker 1: life on a day-to-day basis and affect my bank account.
- 15:11Speaker 1: We do a very poor job of teaching, but we
- 15:15Speaker 1: understand maybe some of these advanced subjects. I think sometimes
- 15:18Speaker 1: that's the way it is in the church. It's like
- 15:20Speaker 1: we're teaching these advanced lessons, you know, from these sections
- 15:24Speaker 1: of scripture that maybe people can unpack, but just understanding
- 15:28Speaker 1: how to actually approach the scripture and have a very
- 15:31Speaker 1: simple method that we can apply. Why do you think
- 15:34Speaker 1: that seems to get overlooked?
- 15:45Speaker 2: I think it does get overlooked. And I have some
- 15:48Speaker 2: of the same questions, quite honestly, Catherine. I have wondered
- 15:52Speaker 2: that myself. I do know when both of my boys
- 15:54Speaker 2: were learning to drive, I figured out really quickly that
- 15:58Speaker 2: I am a good driver, but I'm not a good
- 16:00Speaker 2: driving teacher, right? And so I think just because you
- 16:03Speaker 2: have the skill doesn't mean that you have the skill
- 16:06Speaker 2: to teach the skill. And I think there are probably
- 16:10Speaker 2: people who are called to teach the Bible maybe that aren't,
- 16:13Speaker 2: or teaching how to study the Bible, like you're saying,
- 16:15Speaker 2: that maybe aren't. Or I also find that sometimes it's
- 16:20Speaker 2: very hard in the church to, and I want to
- 16:24Speaker 2: be careful here, I'm so supportive of pastors and churchers
- 16:27Speaker 2: and Bible studies and all that, but sometimes people in
- 16:30Speaker 2: the church are a little bit suspicious or, what is
- 16:35Speaker 2: the word that I want to say leery, maybe leery
- 16:38Speaker 2: of someone other than the pastor or those upper administration
- 16:41Speaker 2: people teaching the Bible. And a lot of times those
- 16:44Speaker 2: people who are, their job is to go to the
- 16:47Speaker 2: scriptures and tell us what the Holy Spirit is saying
- 16:50Speaker 2: to them and teaching us about that aren't the same
- 16:53Speaker 2: people who are teaching us how to study for ourselves.
- 16:57Speaker 2: It's a hypothesis, but yes, one that I'm holding and watching.
- 17:02Speaker 1: I think it's a good question, and I definitely think
- 17:05Speaker 1: we need more people in the body that are teaching
- 17:08Speaker 1: the method. I think we have whetted the appetite of
- 17:10Speaker 1: our audience enough. Like, what is this method?
- 17:14Speaker 2: I love it, yes.
- 17:15Speaker 1: So let's get into this. Why don't you break it down?
- 17:18Speaker 1: You have a really simple five-step method, and what I
- 17:21Speaker 1: love about it, I have been studying the Bible for
- 17:24Speaker 1: as long as I can remember. nearly a half a century,
- 17:27Speaker 1: because I started studying at a pretty young age, of
- 17:30Speaker 1: studying the Bible. And so I think it applies to
- 17:33Speaker 1: people who are very advanced, but it also is going
- 17:36Speaker 1: to apply to the person who just showed up, just
- 17:38Speaker 1: got baptized, green as they can come, don't know about
- 17:43Speaker 1: all the, you know, the different Bible references and stories
- 17:46Speaker 1: that that those have been with the faith longer would
- 17:49Speaker 1: know it applies to everyone. So how do we do
- 17:52Speaker 1: this five step method?
- 17:54Speaker 2: I love it. Yes. I'm so glad that you said
- 17:56Speaker 2: that I do. I don't know everyone who's using the
- 17:58Speaker 2: method for sure, but I do know that there's a
- 18:00Speaker 2: young girl who's six years old who's doing it with
- 18:03Speaker 2: her mom. And I do know there's a woman in
- 18:05Speaker 2: her mid eighties that's doing it in a different class.
- 18:07Speaker 2: And so, And lots of people in between are enjoying it.
- 18:10Speaker 1: So yeah.
- 18:11Speaker 2: So first thing we do is we choose a verse
- 18:13Speaker 2: of scripture. And a lot of times people are like, okay,
- 18:15Speaker 2: how do I choose the verse of scripture? You have
- 18:17Speaker 2: verses of scripture, a verse of the day on your app.
- 18:19Speaker 2: You have a devotional lying around. You have something, right?
- 18:22Speaker 2: You choose a verse of scripture. And then we focus
- 18:25Speaker 2: on one word in that verse of scripture to find
- 18:27Speaker 2: life application. And so step one is to choose the
- 18:30Speaker 2: word in our verse of scripture. We look at the
- 18:32Speaker 2: definition and the synonyms and antonyms just to begin to
- 18:35Speaker 2: get a better understanding of what this word in English means.
- 18:39Speaker 2: That's step one. Step two is called investigate, and we
- 18:42Speaker 2: divide that up into four parts. And part one is
- 18:45Speaker 2: to compare the word in other translations. I don't know
- 18:48Speaker 2: how old I was when I understood the Bible wasn't
- 18:51Speaker 2: written in English, but I was a.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Little bit older.
- 18:54Speaker 2: So the Bible was largely written in Hebrew in the
- 18:58Speaker 2: Old Testament and Greek in the New. And so we
- 19:00Speaker 2: go into those original words. And I always say I
- 19:03Speaker 2: love this part so much where we compare translations. I'm sorry,
- 19:08Speaker 2: we do that first. because the Bible, as you were saying,
- 19:11Speaker 2: somebody was editing your Bible, right? And so the Bible
- 19:15Speaker 2: translation teams that happen, they go into the original language,
- 19:19Speaker 2: Hebrew and Greek primarily, and then they tell us what
- 19:22Speaker 2: they see in there based on what they understand about
- 19:25Speaker 2: that original language. I actually go to a bilingual church
- 19:28Speaker 2: right now, and I teach about every six weeks or so,
- 19:30Speaker 2: and we have this group of interpreters that work with
- 19:33Speaker 2: me so that the Spanish-speaking people in our church can
- 19:36Speaker 2: understand what I'm saying. And I've learned over time that
- 19:38Speaker 2: The way that one of them will listen to me
- 19:40Speaker 2: say something in English and then say it in Spanish
- 19:43Speaker 2: isn't the same way another one will listen to me
- 19:45Speaker 2: say it in English and then say it in Spanish.
- 19:46Speaker 2: And that's the same with our translation. So part one
- 19:49Speaker 2: of that is... to go into the other translations and
- 19:52Speaker 2: see what they say there. And then part two is
- 19:55Speaker 2: to research the original word. And I always say that
- 19:58Speaker 2: the original word may not mean something different than you
- 20:01Speaker 2: think it means, but it almost always means something more.
- 20:05Speaker 2: And I love that part of going into that original
- 20:07Speaker 2: language because there's such depth and beauty and poetry and
- 20:12Speaker 2: symbolism as you research that original word. And then part
- 20:15Speaker 2: three is to read some commentary. And if you download
- 20:21Speaker 2: this kit and you get the masterclass videos, we use
- 20:24Speaker 2: three apps on our phone for simplicity. And the commentator
- 20:28Speaker 2: that I send, the app that I use for that
- 20:30Speaker 2: is called the Enduring Word Commentary. And I really like
- 20:32Speaker 2: it a lot because it's very lay-friendly English. but also
- 20:35Speaker 2: he brings in some other commentators. And so it's not
- 20:39Speaker 2: just one voice too. So if you're new to Bible commentary,
- 20:41Speaker 2: that part can be kind of intimidating, but we work
- 20:44Speaker 2: really hard to break that down for you so you
- 20:45Speaker 2: know where to go. And then part four is to
- 20:48Speaker 2: rewrite the verse in our own words. And so that's
- 20:51Speaker 2: step one to choose our word and look at that definition, synonyms, antonyms.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Step two, investigate, which is kind of the academic part
- 20:58Speaker 2: of it. Like what's going on around this? That's what
- 21:00Speaker 2: the commentary helps us do. What does the original word
- 21:03Speaker 2: tell us? all that kind of good stuff, which is
- 21:05Speaker 2: super fun. I love to use this example, if I
- 21:09Speaker 2: can just pause right here. Psalm 34, 5 is a
- 21:12Speaker 2: really beautiful verse of scripture that says, those who look
- 21:15Speaker 2: to him are radiant. Their faces will never be covered
- 21:18Speaker 2: with shame. And I teach on that verse with some
- 21:20Speaker 2: frequency because the word radiant in Hebrew means to sparkle.
- 21:24Speaker 2: And we talk about it so much. That's just one
- 21:26Speaker 2: of those things that you learn as you go through there.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Those who look to him, their faces will sparkle. And
- 21:31Speaker 2: that as you dig a little bit deeper, the Hebrew
- 21:33Speaker 2: word talks about the sun bouncing off the sheen of
- 21:38Speaker 2: a running river or running brook or something like that,
- 21:41Speaker 2: like that sparkle on the water as it's moving past
- 21:43Speaker 2: and the sun dancing off of it. And I just
- 21:46Speaker 2: love that, right? That's the kind of stuff that I
- 21:47Speaker 2: did not know until I started digging deeper into some
- 21:50Speaker 2: words and in some verses. And so I always think, yes,
- 21:53Speaker 2: Those who look to the Lord will sparkle like that.
- 21:56Speaker 2: So anyway, that's step one and step two. And then
- 21:58Speaker 2: step three, we talk about the characteristics of God. And
- 22:01Speaker 2: we use prompts from scripture, like things like the fruit
- 22:04Speaker 2: of the spirit in Galatians 5, things to think on
- 22:07Speaker 2: in Philippians 4, some of the words that are used
- 22:11Speaker 2: to describe God in the Psalms, like refuge and strong tower.
- 22:16Speaker 2: And we just talk about what are we learning about
- 22:19Speaker 2: God's character as we're studying and And then step four
- 22:22Speaker 2: is called to identify the lie of the enemy. And
- 22:24Speaker 2: scripture tells us that the enemy is the father of
- 22:26Speaker 2: lies and he works in half truths. And so often
- 22:31Speaker 2: the enemy's lie has something to do with our fear.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Be afraid, right? Be afraid that this doesn't apply to
- 22:38Speaker 2: you anymore because of what you did. Or be afraid
- 22:42Speaker 2: that God is good, but actually in this circumstance, he's
- 22:45Speaker 2: not going to show up for you, right? And what
- 22:47Speaker 2: might the enemy be whispering to us that's making what
- 22:49Speaker 2: we're studying studying either hard to believe or hard to
- 22:52Speaker 2: live out. And that's the step of the study that
- 22:57Speaker 2: usually gets the most curiosity maybe, or people will say,
- 23:02Speaker 2: I've never thought about this part before when I studied
- 23:05Speaker 2: the Bible. Like what might the enemy be saying to me?
- 23:08Speaker 2: What might the enemy be trying to whisper to me
- 23:11Speaker 2: that encourages me to align with a half-truth and not believe?
- 23:16Speaker 2: That God is who he says he is in all
- 23:17Speaker 2: of this. And then when we get to step five,
- 23:19Speaker 2: we're simply just making note of a key takeaway. We
- 23:23Speaker 2: call step five, so what? So what are we going
- 23:25Speaker 2: to do with all this, right? So we're making note
- 23:27Speaker 2: of a key takeaway, a nugget of truth that we
- 23:29Speaker 2: want to remember and take with us as we move forward.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Yeah. I love this. I think it's so awesome. I
- 23:35Speaker 1: love what you said about radiant too.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Isn't that great? I love that too.
- 23:39Speaker 1: It is because where we moved here in Tennessee, we're
- 23:42Speaker 1: not far from a lake and we're driving past it
- 23:44Speaker 1: all the time. And I see the light dancing on
- 23:47Speaker 1: the lake. And that's what I love about this method.
- 23:49Speaker 1: So you study that word and the next time you're
- 23:51Speaker 1: driving by the lake, you see that light dancing on it,
- 23:53Speaker 1: which we drive by it a lot.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Yes.
- 23:56Speaker 1: And suddenly your mind goes back to the word, to
- 23:59Speaker 1: the word, to the word. To the word.
- 24:00Speaker 2: It calls you back to the word. And a heart
- 24:03Speaker 2: that might be somewhat sad or discouraged or something, you
- 24:07Speaker 2: see the light shining off that water and you think,
- 24:10Speaker 2: that's what happens when I look to the Lord. Yes.
- 24:12Speaker 1: That's what happens.
- 24:13Speaker 2: That happens inside me and it happens on my face, right?
- 24:17Speaker 2: And it happens to be the way also that people
- 24:19Speaker 2: will see Jesus in me.
- 24:21Speaker 1: And Yes.
- 24:22Speaker 2: So that's a beautiful example, Catherine, of just how when
- 24:25Speaker 2: we study these words and when we study these scriptures, especially,
- 24:29Speaker 2: I don't do very many things fast. Obviously, I don't
- 24:33Speaker 2: study the word of God fast, one word at a time.
- 24:36Speaker 2: But as you study and sit with these scriptures, they
- 24:39Speaker 2: do really make an imprint on your heart. And God
- 24:41Speaker 2: will call them back to mind to you as you
- 24:44Speaker 2: learn them. Mm-hmm.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Yeah, throughout the day. That's what I'm seeing happening with
- 24:48Speaker 1: this is like throughout the day, that word keeps coming back.
- 24:51Speaker 1: That word keeps coming back. And I've done a lot
- 24:54Speaker 1: of Bible studies, and they're wonderful. But sometimes you get
- 24:59Speaker 1: to the end of the Bible study, you're like, it
- 25:01Speaker 1: doesn't really sit with you and come back to you
- 25:03Speaker 1: all day long. This, like, it just keeps feeding me
- 25:06Speaker 1: all day long. It's like you feast on it in
- 25:08Speaker 1: the morning, and then it It comes back, you know,
- 25:11Speaker 1: a few minutes later and throughout the day. And then
- 25:13Speaker 1: you're driving by the lake and you see the radiance
- 25:15Speaker 1: of it. So I didn't tell you I was going
- 25:17Speaker 1: to do this, but I really want to do this.
- 25:18Speaker 1: I think this will be super fun. I took a
- 25:21Speaker 1: verse and did your method with it. And I want
- 25:25Speaker 1: to walk through it with you.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Okay. I would love this.
- 25:27Speaker 1: I'm so excited. Yes.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Teach me.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Tell me what you learned. I can't wait.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Hey friends, it's Katherine here. If you're trying to be

- 26:34Speaker 1: Christian parenting may be crazy, but you don't have to
- 26:37Speaker 1: do it alone. So I'm imagining this was what happens
- 26:43Speaker 1: in your Bible studies that do this, but okay. So
- 26:46Speaker 1: I was praying about what word to use and on
- 26:50Speaker 1: your website, you already mentioned your theme verse from Psalm 40.
- 26:54Speaker 2: 40 verse two. Yes. Yeah.
- 26:56Speaker 1: That portion of scripture from Psalm 40. It's deeply personal
- 27:00Speaker 1: to me too.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Oh, amen.
- 27:04Speaker 1: I've talked about it on my show before. I struggled
- 27:06Speaker 1: with anxiety and depression for many years. And that was
- 27:09Speaker 1: a portion of scripture that I clung to like a
- 27:13Speaker 1: life raft when God was helping to heal and deliver
- 27:18Speaker 1: me from a lot of deep wounds that fed that
- 27:22Speaker 1: depression and anxiety for so many years, 17 years. you know, psychiatrists, psychologists,
- 27:28Speaker 1: they all wanted to do the medical route. And then,
- 27:30Speaker 1: you know, there were, there were deep spirit, a deep
- 27:33Speaker 1: spiritual work that God wanted to do in my life.
- 27:36Speaker 1: And this portion of scripture. So I'm going to read
- 27:38Speaker 1: the portion of scripture. I'm just going to read a
- 27:39Speaker 1: couple of verses.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Here, and then we're going to dig into it. Okay.
- 27:43Speaker 1: So Psalm 40, this is, I want, I want to
- 27:45Speaker 1: read one through three. I waited patiently for the Lord.
- 27:49Speaker 1: He turned to me and heard my cry. It lifted
- 27:52Speaker 1: me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud
- 27:54Speaker 1: and mire. He set my feet on a rock and
- 27:58Speaker 1: gave me a firm place to stand. He put a
- 28:01Speaker 1: new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to
- 28:04Speaker 1: our God. Many will see and fear and put their
- 28:08Speaker 1: trust in the Lord. I love that. And so on
- 28:12Speaker 1: your website, you've got Psalm 40 verse 2. Your whole
- 28:15Speaker 1: theme for your whole ministry is out of here. And
- 28:19Speaker 1: you have the NLT version.
- 28:20Speaker 2: It's NLT because it uses steadied. Yes, exactly. He set
- 28:23Speaker 2: my feet on solid rock and steadied me as I
- 28:26Speaker 2: walked along. Yeah, that's from the NLT, which is one
- 28:28Speaker 2: of those things about comparing translations.
- 28:30Speaker 1: I know.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I love it.
- 28:32Speaker 1: So the word I picked out of this, I was
- 28:36Speaker 1: praying about it, and I just kept coming back to
- 28:38Speaker 1: the word rock.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Rock. What does that mean? I'm so excited. I can
- 28:43Speaker 2: hardly hold it in. I'm sorry.
- 28:45Speaker 1: I'm like, I've got chills all over.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Okay, I'll be quiet.
- 28:49Speaker 1: No, no, this is awesome.
- 28:50Speaker 2: I'm excited too.
- 28:51Speaker 1: So like I said, in the NIV, it was he
- 28:54Speaker 1: lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the
- 28:56Speaker 1: mud and mire. He set my feet on a rock
- 28:59Speaker 1: and gave me a firm place to stand. The NLT,
- 29:02Speaker 1: the New Living Translation, which is on your website, he
- 29:05Speaker 1: lifted me out of the pit of despair. I love that.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Out of the mud and mire, he set my feet
- 29:12Speaker 1: on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Love both of those versions. They give us such a
- 29:21Speaker 1: wonderful representation of what God can and will do. Because
- 29:26Speaker 1: I did feel, I felt hopeless. I felt despair. And
- 29:30Speaker 1: I was constantly slipping and I wanted something to stand on, right?
- 29:34Speaker 1: So I went and looked up the word, what is
- 29:37Speaker 1: a rock? Merriam-Webster says it's a rock. a large, massive
- 29:40Speaker 1: stone forming a cliff, promontory, or peak. It's a foundation
- 29:46Speaker 1: or a support. But I love this definition. It gets
- 29:50Speaker 1: to a refuge. A refuge.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Synonyms.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Synonyms, stone, boulder, cliff, mainstay, stalwart, tower of strength. It's
- 30:03Speaker 1: giving some of those antonyms. Soft, liquid, fragile. And the
- 30:09Speaker 1: verse itself gives us some antonyms. It's contrasted with the
- 30:12Speaker 1: mud and mire.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Mirey pit, yes, right.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Mirey clay. And that's exactly what I felt like. I
- 30:18Speaker 1: was constantly wet and I was slipping. I was slipping
- 30:21Speaker 1: all the time. So those antonyms and synonyms are very important.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Very helpful there. And I looked at other versions. I
- 30:29Speaker 1: looked at the NIV, ESV, KJV, NKJV, New King James Version,
- 30:35Speaker 1: and they all used rock. But the NLT, which you have,
- 30:37Speaker 1: which is the theme of your ministry, calls it solid ground.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Solid ground.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Solid ground. And that's what you're looking for. You're looking
- 30:44Speaker 1: for some solid ground when you're constantly slipping and you
- 30:49Speaker 1: don't have any hope. So I went, one of the
- 30:52Speaker 1: websites I've always enjoyed using is BibleHub.com. And I went to,
- 30:56Speaker 1: because everything's kind of at your fingertip there. Check it out.
- 31:00Speaker 1: You can click on very quickly and find the, of course,
- 31:04Speaker 1: this is Old Testament, so it's Hebrew. I went to
- 31:06Speaker 1: find the original Hebrew word. And that word is Sela, S-E-L-A, Sela.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Strong's Hebrew. It's the reference is five, five, five, three. They,
- 31:17Speaker 1: they reference, they put numbers on all of the words
- 31:20Speaker 1: so you can identify them. And once you click on them,
- 31:23Speaker 1: they'll show you everything.
- 31:24Speaker 2: All kinds of things. Yes. And I'll just say, if
- 31:26Speaker 2: you're like, I don't know how to do that. If
- 31:28Speaker 2: you get the, my free resource, it shows you how.
- 31:31Speaker 2: So I just plug that right now because yes, don't get,
- 31:33Speaker 2: don't get discouraged. If you are like, I don't know
- 31:35Speaker 2: what she's talking about. Yes.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Yes. They will help you find all of that. And
- 31:41Speaker 1: so I just click on that. So what is Sela?
- 31:45Speaker 1: Do you know if I'm pronouncing it Sela?
- 31:47Speaker 2: I don't. I don't. But also, yes, we have fun
- 31:53Speaker 2: with that because we're like, I don't know exactly. And
- 31:54Speaker 2: then we'll look it up because there's lots of places
- 31:56Speaker 2: that'll read it to you.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Yeah. You can just Google it and they'll read it
- 32:00Speaker 1: to you. So it's a craggy rock, literally or figuratively.
- 32:04Speaker 1: And then it says a fortress. Okay. So that's what
- 32:08Speaker 1: I love because you just said, So when you say
- 32:12Speaker 1: you go back to the original word, it doesn't mean
- 32:14Speaker 1: something different, but it almost always means something more.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Yes. And I know what a rock is.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. But a fortress.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Yes. But you look there and you're like, it's a fortress.
- 32:25Speaker 2: You set your feet on a fortress.
- 32:27Speaker 1: That's not the same thing as a rock or even
- 32:30Speaker 1: just solid ground. Because, OK, I was thinking about this.
- 32:33Speaker 1: If I have a bear chasing me. like and a
- 32:35Speaker 1: bear is chasing me yes a rock might be nice
- 32:38Speaker 1: yes i could stand on it i'm not gonna slip
- 32:41Speaker 1: while the bear attacks me right right but it's not
- 32:45Speaker 1: just a solid ground or just a rock yeah it's
- 32:48Speaker 1: a fortress now a fortress is something different so i
- 32:51Speaker 1: looked up that word a fortress is a fortified place
- 32:53Speaker 1: it's a stronghold it's a large and permanent fortification so
- 32:59Speaker 1: and it's um It says a strong building or group
- 33:02Speaker 1: of buildings that is heavily protected and get this designed
- 33:06Speaker 1: to defend against enemy attacks.
- 33:10Speaker 2: So I know if I'm running.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Away from a bear, I don't just want the rock
- 33:15Speaker 1: or the solid ground. What the original word is referring
- 33:19Speaker 1: to here is a fortress. That is what he's going
- 33:24Speaker 1: to provide for us. He is going to defend us
- 33:27Speaker 1: from the enemy.
- 33:28Speaker 2: From our enemy. Yeah.
- 33:30Speaker 1: I never knew that about this verse that I've known
- 33:33Speaker 1: for so long and clung to as the Lord did
- 33:36Speaker 1: provide a fortress. But think about that. What are your
- 33:39Speaker 1: thoughts on that, Angie?
- 33:41Speaker 2: It's just gorgeous. I have done this verse before, but
- 33:44Speaker 2: not with that word. And I'm learning something new because
- 33:46Speaker 2: you did that word, which just makes me so happy.
- 33:48Speaker 2: But when you think about even in your own situation
- 33:51Speaker 2: of anxiety and depression and These verses came into my
- 33:56Speaker 2: life after a very serious car accident and I was
- 33:59Speaker 2: in months and months of rehab. And so I was
- 34:02Speaker 2: in a place of brokenness, different than you, but a
- 34:04Speaker 2: place of brokenness, right? But in both of our situations
- 34:07Speaker 2: of brokenness, we are vulnerable to the enemy. We're vulnerable
- 34:11Speaker 2: to the enemy. But he says, no, I will lift
- 34:13Speaker 2: you from that place and I will put you on
- 34:15Speaker 2: solid ground, which is a protection place. From the bear, yes,
- 34:18Speaker 2: but from the lion, right? In 1 Peter 5, you know,
- 34:22Speaker 2: looking for someone to devour in her vulnerability. And he says, no, no, no, no, no.
- 34:27Speaker 2: And so, yeah, I love how you've done this because
- 34:29Speaker 2: you're already beginning to see and to demonstrate how you're like,
- 34:32Speaker 2: wait a second, this verse was important to me and
- 34:36Speaker 2: it is important to me, but the Lord is taking
- 34:38Speaker 2: me to a place where his promises are like so intimate.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Like I see you in that place. And I will
- 34:45Speaker 2: pick you up and put you on a place of
- 34:48Speaker 2: protection from that which threatens to take you down. I
- 34:53Speaker 2: love it.
- 34:54Speaker 1: I love it.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:55Speaker 1: I love it. Because this verse that I've always loved,
- 34:59Speaker 1: that actually it's a verse I pray over my daughter
- 35:02Speaker 1: who struggled and my oldest has gone through a bit
- 35:05Speaker 1: of a, she went through an agnostic season and She's
- 35:09Speaker 1: now believing God. And this is one of the verses
- 35:11Speaker 1: that I put in my prodigal bundle of verses to
- 35:15Speaker 1: pray over children who are struggling in their faith. We
- 35:17Speaker 1: pray this over my daughter every day because this is
- 35:20Speaker 1: my prayers that God would put her in this place.
- 35:24Speaker 1: And so I pray it every day. But now this
- 35:26Speaker 1: verse has become so much richer. I'm going to read that.
- 35:29Speaker 1: We're going to finish out this process really quickly.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:32Speaker 1: So the commentary on it, God, it's talking about, this
- 35:37Speaker 1: is a psalm of David. God did not merely remove
- 35:41Speaker 1: David from danger. He established him in a place of safety.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Exactly what we were talking about when I really got
- 35:49Speaker 1: into this definition of the word rock. It's not just
- 35:52Speaker 1: a rock, solid ground. It's a fortress. So he delivered
- 35:56Speaker 1: him into a place of safety throughout scripture. The Lord said,
- 36:01Speaker 1: is the rock and refuge of his people. Christ is
- 36:05Speaker 1: the sure foundation and cornerstone upon whom believers stand. So
- 36:10Speaker 1: not only is he delivering us to a fortress, he is.
- 36:15Speaker 2: He is the fortress.
- 36:17Speaker 1: He is the fortress.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Yes. I place you firmly back in my protection. Yes.
- 36:22Speaker 1: You're here. You are over there and you're mine. Yes.
- 36:27Speaker 1: And I am taking you out of that pit. of despair,
- 36:32Speaker 1: and I'm putting you in. I am the refuge and
- 36:36Speaker 1: the fortress, which tells us about his character, right? We
- 36:40Speaker 1: lean in that the other step, we lean into his character.
- 36:43Speaker 1: What is that telling me about my God? He is strong.
- 36:46Speaker 1: He is able. He's a deliverer. He has a plan.
- 36:50Speaker 1: He has a plan. I don't know what the plan is,
- 36:52Speaker 1: but he has a plan to take me from there
- 36:54Speaker 1: and to put me here. So I did my version.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Of the verse, I said, God took me from a
- 37:00Speaker 1: place where I was constantly sinking and losing my footing
- 37:05Speaker 1: on some slippery clay to a place where I'm stable
- 37:09Speaker 1: and secure on solid ground, completely protected in God from
- 37:16Speaker 1: the enemy.
- 37:17Speaker 2: So that's beautiful.
- 37:19Speaker 1: That's my personal version of what the Lord and he did.
- 37:22Speaker 1: He did all of that. So step four, what is
- 37:26Speaker 1: the lie of the enemy? Well, I can remember that
- 37:28Speaker 1: lie so well. Things are never going to change. They
- 37:31Speaker 1: are never going to get better. You will be in
- 37:33Speaker 1: this pit forever. Right.
- 37:35Speaker 2: But Joshua 1, 5, we can cover that with scripture, right?
- 37:38Speaker 2: Who says, I will never leave you nor forsake you
- 37:39Speaker 2: or something, right? Like it's so good to like be
- 37:41Speaker 2: able to say what actually is true because I am
- 37:44Speaker 2: tempted to believe this. And so what do I pull?
- 37:46Speaker 2: I mean, just the verse, that's kind of the enemy's lies,
- 37:49Speaker 2: like the antonym of the verse we're studying almost when
- 37:51Speaker 2: you go back to that, right? But the truth is, no,
- 37:54Speaker 2: God has placed me in the protection of himself and
- 37:57Speaker 2: I'm not in any danger when God himself is my protection.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. And I can remember having walked through all of this.
- 38:06Speaker 1: And if there's anyone in the listening audience who's really struggling,
- 38:09Speaker 1: you feel like you're in a pit and you are
- 38:12Speaker 1: hopeless and you think there's no way out. I just
- 38:18Speaker 1: want to tell you, God has a plan. He has
- 38:21Speaker 1: a plan. It requires some courage on your part. You
- 38:25Speaker 1: don't have to do anything other than just trust in
- 38:28Speaker 1: him and obey what he tells you to do. What
- 38:31Speaker 1: he tells you to do is, is necessary for your
- 38:34Speaker 1: deliverance and your healing. He will lead you. He will
- 38:38Speaker 1: bring you out of that pit. Just trust and obey.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Trust and obey.
- 38:42Speaker 1: What the Lord leads you to do. The final step
- 38:45Speaker 1: you have, what are your key takeaways? And my key
- 38:48Speaker 1: takeaways from this verse now are that there will be
- 38:51Speaker 1: times in life when we feel lost, when we may
- 38:54Speaker 1: feel hopeless, when we feel distraught or in despair. And
- 38:58Speaker 1: the enemy will try to convince us.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Yes.
- 39:02Speaker 1: That we will be there forever.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Yes.
- 39:05Speaker 1: But God has a plan to deliver us from that
- 39:07Speaker 1: pit and put us in a fortress that is him himself.
- 39:11Speaker 1: He is the fortress. And he will protect us. He
- 39:15Speaker 1: will protect me from what once ailed me. That was
- 39:19Speaker 1: my key takeaway. I love that.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Yeah. And for those who are struggling, this is a
- 39:25Speaker 2: process of we are lifted from the pit and placed
- 39:29Speaker 2: on the fortress or in the fortress, the care of
- 39:32Speaker 2: the fortress, as often as we call on the Lord.
- 39:35Speaker 2: So if we're really in a difficult season, it can
- 39:38Speaker 2: be moment by moment that this is happening. And then
- 39:41Speaker 2: as we get stronger and we see him more and
- 39:43Speaker 2: we trust his faithfulness more, then we will realize that
- 39:46Speaker 2: that season of struggle is somewhat distant or it's lesser,
- 39:50Speaker 2: and it's more in our past than it was. But
- 39:54Speaker 2: this is a process that the more you study the
- 39:56Speaker 2: Bible and the more you connect with the faithful promises
- 40:00Speaker 2: of a loving God, you will be able to say, Lord,
- 40:03Speaker 2: in this moment of despair or in this moment of
- 40:06Speaker 2: discouragement or in this moment of sadness, oh, it makes
- 40:09Speaker 2: me cry, I trust you. And that alone is how
- 40:13Speaker 2: we move from the pit to the fortress. I trust you.
- 40:18Speaker 2: I believe you.
- 40:28Speaker 1: That is so good. Leaning into his character. And that's
- 40:34Speaker 1: what the enemy will always have as doubt, right? He
- 40:38Speaker 1: wants us to doubt. He wants us to doubt who
- 40:40Speaker 1: our God is and what he has done and will
- 40:44Speaker 1: do on our behalf.
- 40:46Speaker 2: That's what he started with Eve. Is it not in
- 40:48Speaker 2: the garden? He's not really sharing with you everything you need.
- 40:52Speaker 2: You need this wisdom too, right? You better try to
- 40:57Speaker 2: take care of yourself a little bit because he's not
- 40:59Speaker 2: completely trustworthy to be the one to take care of you.
- 41:01Speaker 2: It's the same song, different verse. I know.
- 41:04Speaker 1: He's been singing that song forever.
- 41:06Speaker 2: And he doesn't get tired. No. And we have to
- 41:10Speaker 2: have knowledge and we get that knowledge. We can say
- 41:13Speaker 2: when that voice comes back into our head, into our heart,
- 41:16Speaker 2: we can say, wait a second, I know what this is.
- 41:18Speaker 2: The voice of the Lord doesn't talk to me like this.
- 41:20Speaker 2: The voice of the Lord isn't shaming. The voice of
- 41:22Speaker 2: the Lord isn't mean. And so no, in the name
- 41:25Speaker 2: of Jesus, I call upon the God that is faithful.
- 41:28Speaker 2: In the name of the Jesus, I call upon the
- 41:30Speaker 2: God that is faithful. Jesus died so that I can
- 41:34Speaker 2: live in freedom from this. And I choose freedom today.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Yes.
- 41:38Speaker 2: Amen.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Amen. And we can respond as Jesus did. As Jesus
- 41:43Speaker 1: did when he said, it is written.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Yes. Yes.
- 41:45Speaker 1: It is written.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Yes. That he will live.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Put my feet on a rock, which is him himself.
- 41:57Speaker 1: And he is the fortress. So this enables me to
- 41:59Speaker 1: respond with passion and, To the enemy when he comes,
- 42:06Speaker 1: just as Jesus did to say, no, this is what the, oh,
- 42:09Speaker 1: and by the way, here's the Hebrew word. And this
- 42:13Speaker 1: is what it means. It's Stella. It means that he
- 42:17Speaker 1: has become my fortress and he is going to protect
- 42:20Speaker 1: me from you. And this is what he has said.
- 42:22Speaker 1: It is written.
- 42:23Speaker 2: I love it.
- 42:23Speaker 1: I love it.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:25Speaker 1: So for the mom who may feel overwhelmed with all
- 42:29Speaker 1: her motherhood responsibility, and she's like, I can't think, I
- 42:32Speaker 1: can't do one more thing. Let me just first add
- 42:35Speaker 1: that this might've taken me 15, 20 minutes to do
- 42:40Speaker 1: this because it's like, once you show where all of
- 42:43Speaker 1: these resources is, it doesn't take that long. It really doesn't.
- 42:47Speaker 2: Our aim is to make it simple and repeatable. We've
- 42:50Speaker 2: tried very hard to get this into a process that
- 42:53Speaker 2: it can't, I mean, if you want to sit with
- 42:54Speaker 2: it an hour and chase rabbits and go down, you know,
- 42:56Speaker 2: and read more stuff, you sure can, but you can
- 42:59Speaker 2: get the kind of, Revelation that Catherine is talking about
- 43:02Speaker 2: right here in a few minutes, really.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Right. The kind of revelation that just continues to feed
- 43:09Speaker 1: you like all day. I can't tell you how much
- 43:10Speaker 1: I've feasted on that idea of the rock. And I
- 43:14Speaker 1: did this several days ago, and I just keep feasting
- 43:17Speaker 1: on the rock. What does that mean, God, that you
- 43:19Speaker 1: are my fortress? And you just keep feeding on it.
- 43:21Speaker 1: But the cool thing about it, too, is you go
- 43:22Speaker 1: back to the same verse and just pick a different
- 43:25Speaker 1: word now.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Pick a different word. Yes, exactly.
- 43:28Speaker 1: I love that. So when we're heavy or broken and overwhelmed,
- 43:32Speaker 1: the Bible, really, it becomes our comfort in those moments.
- 43:37Speaker 1: And I know that There are those in the listening
- 43:40Speaker 1: audience that may feel a little intimidated, but talk a
- 43:44Speaker 1: little bit about how your method then becomes our comfort.
- 43:49Speaker 1: It's not Everest. We're just taking the next step. It's
- 43:53Speaker 1: not that steep. It's really quite easy and refreshing, isn't it?
- 43:58Speaker 2: It is. It's comfort and it's nourishment. And I just
- 44:00Speaker 2: want to encourage the mom too that it's for you.
- 44:04Speaker 2: What Catherine has learned by studying this verse that's so
- 44:07Speaker 2: personal to her is for Catherine, but it's also for
- 44:09Speaker 2: her other people, right? There's a different lightness and a
- 44:12Speaker 2: different patience and a different kindness that we have for
- 44:15Speaker 2: the people that are closest to us when we are
- 44:17Speaker 2: connected with these promises of God. And so I encourage
- 44:21Speaker 2: you to do it for yourself, but I also encourage
- 44:23Speaker 2: you to do it for your people. And I do
- 44:25Speaker 2: just want to say, if you download, it's free. If
- 44:29Speaker 2: you download the starter kit that I know Catherine's going
- 44:31Speaker 2: to put in the show notes here, it has. two
- 44:34Speaker 2: videos that take about 20 minutes to watch that teach
- 44:37Speaker 2: you how to put these apps on your phone. The
- 44:39Speaker 2: three apps that we're talking about to get started. It
- 44:41Speaker 2: has a blank study sheet. It has all the steps
- 44:43Speaker 2: on another sheet. It also has a study guide that
- 44:46Speaker 2: has suggested verses. If you don't know where to start,
- 44:48Speaker 2: the study guide goes along with the understand your Bible
- 44:51Speaker 2: podcast that uses the verses that are in the study guide.
- 44:54Speaker 2: So you can pick the, verse of the week, and
- 44:57Speaker 2: then listen in if you want to on what I
- 45:00Speaker 2: learned as I was studying the verse. Or you can start,
- 45:03Speaker 2: like I said earlier, with your devotion. It has a
- 45:05Speaker 2: verse of scripture in it, the verse of the day.
- 45:08Speaker 2: You can use a Bible study, like Catherine was saying,
- 45:11Speaker 2: that probably has some anchor verses in there that you
- 45:13Speaker 2: just want to go dig deeper. Maybe if you're regularly
- 45:16Speaker 2: in church, you want to take the passage of scripture
- 45:19Speaker 2: that your pastor used on Sunday and pick one of
- 45:21Speaker 2: those verses and go a little deeper into what they
- 45:23Speaker 2: said and So you have the, probably you have what
- 45:27Speaker 2: you need and you don't have to buy anything and
- 45:30Speaker 2: you don't have to go anywhere and you can just start.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Ah, that's awesome. I wanted to talk in our few
- 45:37Speaker 1: remaining moments, how to apply this with our kids. For
- 45:40Speaker 1: those of us who still have children in the home
- 45:42Speaker 1: that we're doing active Bible studies with. So my three
- 45:46Speaker 1: older kids, I've got two that I've empty nested recently.
- 45:48Speaker 1: I miss them very much.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Yes.
- 45:51Speaker 1: But, um, so, and then I've got one who's 16
- 45:54Speaker 1: and she's doing her own Bible study. And by the way,
- 45:56Speaker 1: I'm very excited to share this method with all of
- 45:58Speaker 1: them to encourage them to go and do it on
- 46:00Speaker 1: their own. I even have visions of my son being an, um,
- 46:04Speaker 1: he's majoring in biblical studies at MCU, like just doing this,
- 46:08Speaker 1: how cool would it be that you're in your Bible class?
- 46:10Speaker 1: And oh, by the way, I studied that verse this morning.
- 46:12Speaker 1: And this word means that, you know, Selah means rock,
- 46:16Speaker 1: you know, I'm like, well, that can't hurt. You know,
- 46:18Speaker 1: it's just a wonderful way to go about studying. And
- 46:21Speaker 1: I think it really adds a lot of depth and
- 46:23Speaker 1: richness and vocabulary to you in your future studies as well.
- 46:28Speaker 1: Who knows, some of our kids may be going into
- 46:30Speaker 1: biblical studies like my son is. But I do have
- 46:33Speaker 1: two younger ones. I have a nine and 11 year old.
- 46:35Speaker 1: So I was thinking, hey, they could pick a verse
- 46:39Speaker 1: or we could get to a verse and we could
- 46:41Speaker 1: trade off. Okay, Weston today, why don't you pick one
- 46:44Speaker 1: word that jumps out to you in this and kind
- 46:46Speaker 1: of just go through the process with them. And let's like, let's.
- 46:50Speaker 1: Show them. This is such a great, see, that's what
- 46:52Speaker 1: I love. I'm so excited to do this with them
- 46:54Speaker 1: because I can say, okay, here we're going to dig in.
- 46:57Speaker 1: This was the verse that you guys chose and here's
- 47:01Speaker 1: the word that Weston wants to look into today. And
- 47:04Speaker 1: so we're going to really dig in. What is that
- 47:07Speaker 1: Greek word? What does it mean? What lie could be
- 47:09Speaker 1: attached to this? And going through all the steps with
- 47:11Speaker 1: him and then either take the same verse the next
- 47:14Speaker 1: day and let my daughter pick a word.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 47:17Speaker 1: And we can go through it that way. But this
- 47:19Speaker 1: seems so user-friendly that I could really use this with
- 47:23Speaker 1: my kids, can't I?
- 47:24Speaker 2: Absolutely. Yeah. So if you go to my website under
- 47:27Speaker 2: the free resources tab, you can find the step-by-step starter kit.
- 47:30Speaker 2: That's what we've been talking about. But there's also a
- 47:32Speaker 2: family kit, which includes everything in the starter kit, but
- 47:35Speaker 2: it also adds a study sheet for kiddos. And then
- 47:38Speaker 2: it has a planning sheet as well. So if you'd
- 47:40Speaker 2: like to study the verse ahead of time, maybe use
- 47:42Speaker 2: it in your homeschool curriculum or for family devotion, something
- 47:45Speaker 2: like that, and you want a little head start on
- 47:47Speaker 2: the kiddos, you can do it that way as well.
- 47:49Speaker 2: But yes, absolutely. It works. It's been used. This method
- 47:52Speaker 2: has been used in curriculum for Christian schools, in homeschool co-ops.
- 47:56Speaker 2: It's actually being used. I'm very honored. It's being used
- 47:58Speaker 2: in a juvenile detention center in Albuquerque, New Mexico by
- 48:01Speaker 2: someone who loves the method. And she goes in and
- 48:03Speaker 2: she teaches those who are incarcerated, the teenagers there. And so, yeah,
- 48:08Speaker 2: it's very effective for younger people as well.
- 48:11Speaker 1: You know, I'm currently doing community Bible study. We're studying
- 48:15Speaker 1: the book of Acts with a group of ladies. And
- 48:18Speaker 1: the cool thing about that Bible study, I really like
- 48:20Speaker 1: it because it's not overwhelming. It probably the whole week
- 48:24Speaker 1: takes maybe, I don't know, hour or an hour and
- 48:27Speaker 1: a half that you divide up into your days. But
- 48:30Speaker 1: that leaves a lot of extra time. So I can
- 48:32Speaker 1: go in with the other Bible study I'm already doing
- 48:34Speaker 1: and OK, I'm going to dig into this verse and
- 48:39Speaker 1: this word in this verse and do that to really
- 48:42Speaker 1: bring a lot of richness and depth to the other
- 48:45Speaker 1: Bible study I'm already doing. Or you could do it
- 48:47Speaker 1: all on its own just by itself, you know. And
- 48:51Speaker 1: I am very excited to try that with the kids
- 48:53Speaker 1: because I want them to learn how to dig into
- 48:56Speaker 1: the word. Yes.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Let us teach our kids how to study the word. Yeah. Right.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Get a taste and see that the Lord is good
- 49:03Speaker 1: and help them to understand how this very rich method,
- 49:07Speaker 1: I think, really gets deep in there and can provide
- 49:11Speaker 1: a source of just comfort and nutrition, spiritual nutrition, that is,
- 49:16Speaker 1: all day long.
- 49:17Speaker 2: So that's awesome.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Any final thoughts you have? that you'd like to share
- 49:21Speaker 1: with us? Anything we missed that we didn't get to cover?
- 49:24Speaker 1: Anything you.
- 49:26Speaker 2: I don't know what I expected today, but I did
- 49:29Speaker 2: not expect to have this much fun studying with you,
- 49:31Speaker 2: which is just, it just was super, it was just
- 49:34Speaker 2: a blast. So whoever's listening, this was just organic and
- 49:38Speaker 2: true and fun. And this is the kind of joy,
- 49:41Speaker 2: it's truthfully the kind of joy that comes when we
- 49:44Speaker 2: open the Word and have the tools to study it
- 49:47Speaker 2: and give God the space to speak truth, His truth
- 49:51Speaker 2: over our life and circumstances. It brings the kind of
- 49:55Speaker 2: this joy and peace that we've had today as we've studied.
- 49:59Speaker 2: So Catherine, thank you for studying with me. This was
- 50:01Speaker 2: really fun.
- 50:02Speaker 1: It was. I can just imagine groups of men and
- 50:05Speaker 1: women doing this, you know, in small groups, just getting together,
- 50:09Speaker 1: picking a verse, going. And everybody comes back, like you said,
- 50:12Speaker 1: with your groups. Just I studied this word. This is
- 50:15Speaker 1: what the Lord showed me here. And just. Doing exactly
- 50:19Speaker 1: what we've done today. I think we just kind of
- 50:21Speaker 1: fleshed it out for everybody. We did.
- 50:23Speaker 2: This is it. This is what happens. I know.
- 50:25Speaker 1: That's why I was so excited. I always tell people
- 50:27Speaker 1: I'm excited to talk to you today because obviously you
- 50:30Speaker 1: have to say that to your guests. You don't want
- 50:31Speaker 1: to be like, well, glad you're here. You know, I've always, I,
- 50:36Speaker 1: of course, I don't have people on my show that
- 50:37Speaker 1: I don't want, you know, I'm not excited to talk
- 50:39Speaker 1: to you, but I was super excited to talk to
- 50:42Speaker 1: you because I've really been enjoying doing this so much.
- 50:46Speaker 2: I mean, it is an honor. It really is. I'm honored.
- 50:50Speaker 2: And it's just, it's, it makes me so happy to
- 50:52Speaker 2: know that something that was already really meaningful has taken
- 50:54Speaker 2: on even new meaning and depth.
- 50:56Speaker 1: It really has. I see myself just incorporating this into
- 51:00Speaker 1: my personal Bible study this time. Just going forward from
- 51:04Speaker 1: now and just really sinking my teeth into these original
- 51:08Speaker 1: words and meanings. And that was one of the biggest
- 51:11Speaker 1: takeaways for me because I loved what you said. I
- 51:13Speaker 1: had already listened to you talk about the method and
- 51:17Speaker 1: you'd said that that original word, it doesn't mean something different,
- 51:20Speaker 1: but it almost always means something more.
- 51:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 51:22Speaker 1: And that is exactly what I found when I went
- 51:25Speaker 1: back to that root word. And that has been feeding me.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Yay.
- 51:30Speaker 1: So yay. And before the show, we talked about some
- 51:33Speaker 1: other things that, hey, we got to get back together.
- 51:35Speaker 1: We've just had too much fun. Yes. We're going to
- 51:37Speaker 1: have to get back together sometime and find another topic
- 51:40Speaker 1: to talk about because this was awesome. Thank you.
- 51:42Speaker 2: I would love that.
- 51:43Speaker 1: One more time, tell our listeners where to go to
- 51:45Speaker 1: find out all about you and your ministry and the
- 51:48Speaker 1: step-by-step method.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Yeah, just the website. Yeah, the website is livestedyon.com, livestedyon.com.

- 51:57Speaker 2: that interests you. You can find the tab for the
- 51:59Speaker 2: Bible studies, but also make sure those free resources if
- 52:02Speaker 2: that's where, that's just the best place to start. Awesome.
- 52:05Speaker 1: Thank you so much for joining us today, Angie. I
- 52:08Speaker 1: can't wait for our next conversation, whatever it will be.
- 52:10Speaker 2: I'm for it. Thank you, Catherine.
- 52:13Speaker 1: I think you could hear how excited I was to
- 52:15Speaker 1: really dig into the Word with Angie. That was an
- 52:19Speaker 1: absolute blast. If I had to rate all of my
- 52:23Speaker 1: podcasts for fun level, the funnest I've had in a
- 52:27Speaker 1: podcast episode, I think this might. Definitely top five, if
- 52:30Speaker 1: not really close to the top. Thank you. I'm so
- 52:33Speaker 1: grateful for Angie joining me today. I hope that that
- 52:38Speaker 1: fun that we had in studying the Word of God is...
- 52:42Speaker 1: really transformative for you, that you can have that much
- 52:45Speaker 1: fun too, studying the Word of God and sharing with
- 52:49Speaker 1: your family, with your husband, with your wife, with your kids,
- 52:53Speaker 1: what God has taught you. That is what we're here
- 52:55Speaker 1: to do today, is to learn how to dig into
- 52:58Speaker 1: the Word and have these kinds of encounters with the Word,
- 53:02Speaker 1: transforming us and changing us into His likeness, helping us
- 53:07Speaker 1: to know who God is and make Him known to
- 53:11Speaker 1: I think Angie's method is brilliant, and I'm so excited
- 53:14Speaker 1: to be using it myself and with my kids. I
- 53:16Speaker 1: know this sounds like, I'm sorry, I don't want this
- 53:19Speaker 1: to sound like a commercial. She did not pay to
- 53:21Speaker 1: come on the show. I just love it that much.
- 53:24Speaker 2: So I hope.
- 53:24Speaker 1: You enjoyed the conversation we had as much as I did.
- 53:29Speaker 1: And as always, remember, God gave you your kids, your
- 53:33Speaker 1: specific kids for a reason. That's because you hold the
- 53:37Speaker 1: key to unlocking who God created them to be. We'll
- 53:41Speaker 1: see you next time. Christian Parent Crazy World is a
