- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Prayer and the spirit that I felt was in it, and ask that you would all continue to pray.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Um I'd like to look at the gospel according to Luke chapter 22.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Certainly um what's recorded here was recorded in Matthew and Mark as well.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: We may look at some of those uh accounts, but Luke chapter 22 is where I would like to focus this morning because of some of the things Luke included that touch me deeply, and I trust will touch you, and that we'll feel um together that the Lord is in the matter.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Luke chapter 22 starts with now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Now that's not the same day that's coming.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: This is telling us, the first verse, that this is coming, and there's some things that happened here I don't want to talk about, but this is sometime before, and it says the devil had entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, to betray the Lord.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: And then verse seven came the day of unleavened bread.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: So verse seven says, Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the Passover must be killed.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: So now we've moved however many days later.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: I think it's two days between these two verses, but that's not the point this morning.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Verse 7 says, Then came the day of unleavened bread when the Passover must be killed.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: If you go back and study in the Old Testament, which you know we've done a little, Brother Owen and I have studied some of the Passover, you'll find that the Passover was the first day of a seven-day feast of unleavened bread.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Which is why the first verse says, Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nine, which is called the Passover.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: They're the same event, they have significance that maybe we'll draw out this morning between the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which was seven days long.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: He says, Then came the day of unleavened bread when the Passover must be killed.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: So this is the first day of this seven-day feast.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And now I'll probably read through till I stop reading, verse eight.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And he, this is Jesus Christ, he said to Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the Passover that we may eat.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: And he said unto them, Behold, when ye enter into the city, there shall be a man meet you, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Follow him into the house where he entereth in.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: And ye say unto and ye shall say unto the good man of the house, The master saith unto thee, Where is the guest chamber where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples?
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: And he shall show you a large upper room furnished, there make ready.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: And they went and they found as he had said unto them, and they made ready the Passover.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: And when the hour was come, he sat down and the twelve apostles with him, and he said unto them, With desire, I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Now there is more to read, but we'll wait for now.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: So as we've uh laid out this context, he tells John and Peter to go into the city, and they're gonna find the place where he'll have this Passover.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Now the Passover was to be eaten by all of Israel.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: The Passover was an ordinance given to the children of Israel specifically for a remembrance of a great deliverance Israel had been given by God.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Now it was the night that the children of Israel were led out of Egypt.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Well, the next morning they left Egypt.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: If you recall, it's because the final plague that was placed on Egypt when Israel were in bondage and slavery to the Egyptians, the final pass, the final plague was the death of the firstborn of all in Egypt.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: It was really the death of the firstborn of everyone.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: It would have been the Israelites too, except for this certain thing that God told them to do.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: That was to kill a lamb, take the blood from that lamb, and to uh like spread it on the doorpost and the linter of the door of the home that they would be inside of and eat of that same lamb whose blood was over the door.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: So there's multiple parts to that.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: The important phrase that God gives them that carries throughout Scripture and right to us today is God saying, When I see the blood, I will pass over thee and not suffer the destroyer to come into thy house.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Or in other words, no one in that home, the firstborn of that home, would not die at this pronounced death of all the firstborn, because of the blood that the Lord sees.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: That's why it was called the Passover, because he passed over those that he saw the blood, and death did not come.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: But they ate of that lamb as well.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: They had to eat of that lamb in that home.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: The only people that ate of it were under that blood.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: It was also the first day of this feast of unleavened bread.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: And on that they had to eat bread that had no leaven in it, there were no rising properties in the bread.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: And it would be the first of seven days where they would eat only unleavened bread for that whole seven days.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: So that's the feast of unleavened bread.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: But that one first ever Passover was different than anyone that would come after.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Because that was really happening.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: The first Passover, death was reigning throughout the land, and the only ones that did not suffer that plague of death were under the blood.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: After that, every Passover they had was a remembrance.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: There was no destroyer coming that time.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: There was no death happening around them.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: I don't even read where they painted the blood on the doors anymore.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: That was that one time, but after that, there was the same feast of the Passover Lamb, the same keeping of this feast of unleavened bread for seven days.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: And we'll go and read.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Well, actually, we'll go and read that later because I want to wait until we read the next few verses in Luke.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: But that's what he's going to eat.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Understand, the Lord is going to eat, starting with this feast that had been kept for thousands of years, of a day of remembrance, of a great deliverance, natural deliverance that Israel had when God saw the blood of this lamb that was killed, that was slain, and passed over them.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: That is the point of the Passover up until this time.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: But the Lord makes some distinction here.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: And he says, with desire, I've desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: And we're going to find a transition that this Passover will do because this night will be a night of transition in the history of this world.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Something will happen that never happened before and will never need and won't happen again.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: He says, before I suffer.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: He wants to eat this Passover with them.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Now, the important thing we should take, first of all, out of this is while the Passover was for all of Israel, it was always partaking of, the Israelites ate the Passover in their homes with their families.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: You know, the Day of Atonement was also a great picture of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: It was a really important day in Israel's religious calendar, the Day of Atonement, when the goat that would be slain and the blood of that taken into the holiest of all, once per year, only once by the high priest.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: That was a very special day.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: That day pointed to Jesus Christ.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: That day was a day that they would gather all together in one place, like a big congregation of all of Israel.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: And certainly it was the day of atonement, the blood that was shed.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: And of course, the beautiful picture of the scapegoat where the sins of all of Israel would be placed in their sight, in their viewing by the high priest, on the head of this other goat that was taken away never to return.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Beautiful picture of Jesus Christ, right?
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: For all to have in one big congregation.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: That's important because Jesus Christ died for all of his people.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: His blood was shed equally for every one of his people.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Nobody that was chosen by God before the world began has more or less claim to the blood of Jesus Christ.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: We have equality in the death of Jesus Christ.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: No one will have a low seat in heaven.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Because we will all be one in heaven because we're one in Jesus Christ.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: That's what the Day of Atonement is a great picture of, because they all partook of that at one time, all together.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: The Passover was for every one of Israel, but it was very individualized, right?
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Because each household that first night had to slay a lamb.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Each household had to paint the blood on their door.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Each family ate that Passover together in their home, and then the remembrance of it for years after, all the centuries and millennia after, was always done in a home by a family.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: It's always a small group.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: It was never supposed to be more people than could partake of that lamb.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: And it really wasn't supposed to be too few either, because if your family was just a really small family, you would get your neighbors and bring them in so that you would fill the house and eat all of the lamb.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: If there was anything left over, you couldn't eat.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: There was no leftovers for the Passover lamb.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: It was supposed to be exactly sufficient for the people eating it, but it was always very intimate, very particular.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: And of course, it's a picture of the deliverance of the whole nation of Israel, but it's brought down to the particular people.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Each one eating the Passover, remembering what was done for them.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Jesus wanted to eat this Passover.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: And he said, I was with desire, I want to eat it with you.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: And he was talking to his disciples, his apostles.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: He had other disciples.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Sometimes we use the phrase, the word disciples, and the scriptures do, so we don't misuse it.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: These disciples, these disciples, these twelve, right?
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: But he had other disciples.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: It wasn't down to just twelve.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: For instance, where's Mary?
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Or the other Mary?
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Or um there's uh other disciples that we know by name, Cleophys.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Umes that walked with uh on the road to Emmaus after his uh resurrection, that he's named.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: There's other disciples.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: There was around 120, I think, around this time and the time at uh uh right before the day of Pentecost, which we'll read in a second.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: But when we say disciples, do we always like define that word?
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: What does that mean?
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Well, disciple means a learner, um, one that's following the discipline of the teacher.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: And we always use the word discipline nowadays as if it means only like harsh, like chastisement or punishment.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: That's not what discipline means.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Um, it can mean that.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: You know, if my children are not doing right, I need to discipline them.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: But see, the root of that is to teach.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: And there's in colleges, for instance, you might be studying a certain discipline.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: That's your that's what you're learning.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: You're a learner of that discipline, right?
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: That that area.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Well, these disciples were the ones that were learners of Jesus Christ.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: He's the master and the teacher.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: There are other disciples.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Um we read back earlier, and I'm not going to turn to all these places, but you can read back earlier where there were disciples that were following him, that it said that at a certain teaching, they said, This is a hard saying.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: Who can hear it?
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And it says many of his disciples walked away from him and followed him no more.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: And that particular teaching, by the way, happened to be when he said that, unless you eat of my flesh and drink of my blood, he started to teach about an eating and drinking of his flesh and his blood.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: They weren't getting it, and he wasn't simplifying it on purpose.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Now, Jesus was not trying to be tricky or exclusive in any way, but the Lord doesn't act like we do like that.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: But the Lord is laying out a hard teaching of him, and these disciples were like, I can't, I don't, I don't, I can't understand this.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: And they just walked away.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: And Peter says, he didn't say, No, we understand.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: That's important.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: He did not say, No, Lord, we we're with you.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: We understand what you're saying.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: I I submit to you that they did not understand him any better than the ones that walked away at that point.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: But what Peter said, they all echoed, To whom shall we go?
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: Thou hast the words of eternal life.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: So, in other words, what Peter was saying was, Lord, we don't understand either, but we know there's no one else to go to but you.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: We're going to stay and learn of you.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: We're going to follow you though we don't understand it all.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: We know where to go.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: We know who to go to.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: And that's the difference.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: That's the difference sometimes between these disciples and other disciples was refusing to leave the following of the Lord.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: The commitment that they had made to their Lord.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: Um, there was a young ruler who wanted to know of the Lord.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: He wanted to learn of the Lord, and he came to the Lord, and when the Lord taught a lesson to him, he walked away sorrowing.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: And the lesson that came out of that for his other disciples was it's it's hard.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: It's hard to enter into the kingdom.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: It takes commitment and diligence and sacrificing of things.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: Ultimately, Jesus would say this if any man would follow me and be my disciple, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: There's steps in that.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: Denying self first, taking up your cross has a sacrificial implication.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: It's sacrificing all that would hinder you from following the Lord and then following the Lord.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Now following the Lord, I don't do that as much as I ought, I admit, and nobody's perfect, but it does at least require that I let him make the rules.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: I don't decide what is right in his church.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: He's the head.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: So what we find here is not all the disciples, but it's these twelve.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Why these twelve at this time?
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: It's significant.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: It doesn't call them the twelve disciples here.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: It does in other places refer to these twelve as disciples, but here he says his twelve apostles.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: Notice that it says in verse 14, his twelve apostles.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: He's not excluding Mary here.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: He's not excluding Martha.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: He's not excluding Lazarus.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: This isn't a male-only thing.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: That's not what's going on here.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Lazarus isn't here.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Cleopathus isn't here.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: There's other male disciples that aren't here.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: It's these 12 apostles.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Why is that?
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: It's because what is about to happen this night is not any old Passover service.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: Could have been more disciples eating this Passover with the Lord.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: And he's not saying he didn't desire to have this supper with anyone else but them.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: He was saying there's something special happening here, and he needs them to get this because of what it will mean in the future.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: And what that is is what we have when the apostles are given something special by the Lord.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: It is part of the foundation of his church.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: The Lord was building his church throughout his three and a half year ministry, starting with his baptism in Jordan.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: You know, people ask, why was the Lord baptized?
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: It's important for us to know what baptism is and what it isn't before we can answer that question.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Because certainly, if baptism is something that's required to put away sin or wash away your sins in a real, real way, the Lord didn't need to be baptized.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: The Lord had no sin.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: But if baptism is a declaration of a truth, which for Jesus it was a declaration of a truth that isn't really true for any of anyone else ever.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: And it was declared when he came up out of the water, and the voice of God came down, and the Spirit of God came down in the form of a dove, and the voice of God said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I'm well pleased.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: That was a declaration of a truth.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: And when he was baptized, he told John, who was hesitant to baptize him, it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: So he was a righteous act of being baptized.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: Coming out of the water, it declared the truth of who he is.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: Now, none of our baptisms declare that same exact thing, but it does in many ways mirror it.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Because when you're baptized and the truth you're declaring is the truth, when you're baptized, God is well pleased in that act because it's an act of obedience to him.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: Now, this subsermon this morning is not about baptism, but it must be referred to because what baptism does is it preaches in action a truth that you believe, and that's why you're submitting to it.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: And that truth is, we believe Scripture teaches that the truth is that you were in Jesus Christ when he died, that you were placed in him before the world began.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: That you were in him when he died, so his death was your death.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: And that when he rose from the grave, you rose from the grave.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: In a legal way, representative way, you rose from the dead.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: So your baptism doesn't make that happen, but your baptism represents it, it declares it, it preaches it in action that you're saying, I believe Jesus died and rose again for me.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: That's what it means.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: But it's the beginning of his ministry, the beginning building block, as it were, of his church.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: It's something he placed in his church.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: Then he called these 12 apostles.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: And it's interesting that he called them specifically and no one else.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: All the other disciples that followed him, he would say things like, Come follow me.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: Like he would say to the masses, take up your cross and follow me.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: Don't get me wrong.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: He calls in the heart of every one of his people to follow him, but he called these twelve for a specific purpose.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: And that purpose was to build his church here on this earth.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: And he told them, he said, when he um, well, he asked Peter, whom say ye that I am?
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: And Peter said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: And Jesus said, Blessed art thou, Simon and Barjon, for flesh and blood hath not revealed this unto thee, this truth, this fact that he's the Christ, the Son of God.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: He says, But my Father which is in heaven.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: And he says, And I say unto thee, Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: My friends, he wasn't saying that his church is built on Peter.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: We just don't find that anywhere, and I could spend the time, but don't have it, to prove that Peter did not think that's the truth.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: Peter would reiterate over and over that it's built on the foundation of Christ, that Christ is the stone that the builders rejected, and that it's become the head of the corner.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Peter mentions that because Peter knows he's not the stone that it's built on.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: It's built on Christ.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: But why did Christ say, upon this rock I'll build my church?
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: He's saying on the foundation of the truth of Jesus Christ revealed by God.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: No, there is no other way to enter the church except you believe that Jesus is the Christ, and God tell revealed that to you, not any flesh and blood.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: It is very personal, it's very individual.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: I love to see a whole family come all at one time and join the church, but you know it has to be each individual heart that's declaring this truth, and not we don't just come in mass, right?
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: Each and every one.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Because God loved you before the world began.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: He loved you as an individual.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: He didn't love you as a group of people.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Oh, he loved all his people.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: He loves you equally all.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: But it's very personal the way he chose his people before the world began.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: He tells us that in a picture in Romans, it talks about Jacob have I loved and Esau have I hated.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: He he names them particularly that the purpose of God according to election might stand, it says.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: And what's that what that means is so you would learn the lesson of what election is.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: Election is personal, election is individual.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: Election is the love of God directed, laser focused on his child, you and you.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: It's not a net fishing type thing where he just says, I'll get a bunch of people.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: He loved each one.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: So when we join the church, the church is built on this principle that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, being revealed by God directly to a heart he loved and has that He has quickened.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: You know, when you're born again, that's also not something that's done in mass.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: That's not done broadcast out and just um wherever it lands.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: That's the power of God directed laser focused to the heart he loves.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: He says live.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: The picture of it is found in Ezekiel chapter 16, where it says, there's a baby cast out in the field to the loathing of its person is polluted in its own blood.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: He says, When I pass by thee, I said live.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: It's not a field of dead babies that's pictured, it's an individual, right?
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: So when God loved you before the world began, he loved you.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: When Jesus died on the cross, though, he shed his blood for many.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: And Mark's account says it that way, which is shed for many.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: He died, he shed his blood for you.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: When you're born again, he comes directly to you and makes you alive in him.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: You see the personalness of this.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: So when people join the church and are baptized, that is individual and personal, each one answering their own conscience.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: It's the answer of a good conscience toward God, and it's each individual person.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: He called these apostles individually, and he set them up as the foundation of his church.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: And here is this last night of his earthly ministry.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: This will be when he, after this, he will go and suffer.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: After this, he will go and fulfill what the Passover was really pointing to.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Not looking back to the deliverance naturally of Israel, but looking to the true deliverance of every one of God's people when he would die on the cross for each and every one of their sins.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: The blood of this Passover, Jesus Christ, of this man, this blood, would be painted as it were, in a figurative sense, on the door and lintel of your hearts when you're born again of the Spirit.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: But in the legal sense, his blood was applied to you then when he died on the cross for you.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: His blood was shed for you.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: And when God sees that blood of Jesus Christ, there's no death that will pass over you.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: Death will pass over you.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: The punishment and wrath of God against sin will pass over you.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: Jesus is the Passover.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Means go and eat it with these disciples at this time because He's going to change, He's going to establish in the church with these apostles something that should be passed down to even us today.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: We don't eat of the Passover anymore.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: Notice he says here that I will not eat anymore of this Passover, he goes, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: When's it going to be fulfilled when he dies on the cross as the Passover?
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: The real true sacrifice for our sins.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: It's fulfilled.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: There's no more Passover dinner, supper observance.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: But then, and I want to get back before we close to the upper room furnished and prepared, but I may not.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: But then verse 17, it says he took the cup.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: The cup, I don't have time for this, but in the Passover, there's multiple observances of this particular cup.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: If we can study it out, maybe spend time some other day on it, but there's cups throughout the dinner.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: They have significance, they had meaning in the Passover.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: But he takes this cup of wine, this cup of fermented actual wine.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: It was not unfermented grape juice.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Don't need to really prove that out.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: They had no way to keep grape juice that wouldn't spoil or turn to wine.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: There was no refrigeration back then.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: So the idea that it wasn't wine just is not, it doesn't hold up.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: It was wine.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: He took the cup and he gave thanks.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: And he said, Take this, divide it amongst yourselves, for I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God shall come.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: This is different.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: He doesn't say he'll never have it again.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: Like the Passover, it says, I'm not going to eat of this, it'll be fulfilled.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: Here he's saying, I'm not going to drink of this again after tonight until I do drink it.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: And another place it says, till I take it with you in the kingdom.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: Then it says he took bread and gave thanks and broke it.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: Now what bread did he take?
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: How do we know?
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Well, it's the feast of unleavened bread.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: They weren't allowed to have any leaven for seven days in all their coasts.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Like, and we read in Deuteronomy chapter 16, it'll tell you, no leaven anywhere.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: This was unleavened bread.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: When it says he took bread, we know what kind of bread it was.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: It had to be unleavened bread.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: But he's going to take it and it's going to mean something.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: He says, Take this, took the bread, he gave thanks and break it and gave it unto them, saying, This is my body which was given for you, which is given for you.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: This do in remembrance of me.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: Now there's a lot to, as they say, unpack in that phrase, but the thing I want to mention most is this phrase of this do in remembrance of me.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: It echoes Deuteronomy chapter 16 about the Passover.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: And I won't read all of it, but in chapter 16 on Deuteronomy, when he tells them to observe the month of Abib and keep the Passover unto the Lord thy God, because it was in that month that they came out of Egypt.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: He says, Thou shalt therefore sacrifice the Passover unto the Lord thy God.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: It says, in the place which your Lord shall choose to place his name there, thou shalt eat no leavened bread with it, seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread therewith.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: For thou camest forth from the land of Egypt in haste, that thou may remember the day when thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt all the days of thy life.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: And there shall be no leavened bread seen with thee in all thy hosts seven days.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: So the reason I go and read that is when they were eating the Passover, it was not a new real event.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: They weren't leaving Egypt in haste, right?
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: Eating the Passover every year after that first one was a remembrance of the deliverance.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: And it says that.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: See, that's what an ordinance really is.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: We think we have two ordinances in the church.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: We have a lot of traditions in the church.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: We have some that are biblical.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: The traditions delivered to us by the apostles are that we sing, making melody in our hearts, that we sing praises to God, that we do it as a church body and not some set of the church that is separate or distinct.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: These are the singers, and the rest of us are the listeners.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: No, we all sing together because that's passed down to us from the apostles.
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: We see it in Acts.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: We see it even this night with Jesus and his disciples.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: We pray.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: That's a tradition.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: It is a tradition.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: It's passed down to us from the apostles, though.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: It roots all the way back to Jesus praying with his apostles.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: And we preach the gospel by the Spirit anointing and blessing us to do so from the Word of God, preaching the doctrines that the apostles delivered unto us.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: Basically, that's the traditions passed down from the apostles.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: That's it, right?
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: That's the nutshell, that's what the church is.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: In Acts chapter 2, it says that Peter preached to them on that day, and when they heard that, they were pricked in their hearts.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: It's Acts chapter 2, verse 37.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: And they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do?
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: And Peter said unto them, Repent, be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: For the promise is unto you and unto your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: Now that's where it gets particular.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: The promise is to all that the Lord calls.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Who the Lord puts it in their heart.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: But then there's something for them to do.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: And the first step was to be baptized.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: But it's not the last step.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: That's the first thing Jesus did in building his church.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: Here's the last thing he did this night with his apostles.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: When he took from an old remembrance and he made a new remembrance.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: He said, Take this bread, this is in remembrance of me.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: This is the memorial you'll do.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: But that means it's not what it's not the bread, it's not bread in our minds.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: By the way, it is still bread and always will be, because it's not something that happens to the bread.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: It's something that has happened to you.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: The bread doesn't become his body, but he says, This is my body which is broken for you.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: That's what we're to think about.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: That's what we're to remember.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: And these that joined the church that day, how do we know we joined, they joined in the church?
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: They were baptized.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: And then verse 41, they that were gladly received his word were baptized.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: And the same day that there were added unto them the church, 3,000 souls, 3,000 human lives.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: The word soul sometimes means that part of you that's like born again of God.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: And sometimes the word soul means the person, right?
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: And I don't have time to prove that, but you just read about the eight souls that were saved by water.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: It was all of their life that was saved by water.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: People joined the church.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: That's what this means.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: They joined with them.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: They said, we're gonna follow him, and we're gonna start with the thing he commanded us to do, be baptized.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: And we're going to then continue steadfastly.
- 37:33SPEAKER_00: What did they continue?
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: Verse 42, they continue steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: The word fellowship there actually is the same word as communion.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: In four places in the scripture it's translated communion.
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: The word communion, it means fellowship.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: It means walking together agreed in what?
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: The apostles' doctrine.
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: The apostles were the foundation of the church that Jesus built.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: Ephesians chapter 1, it says, and you are built upon the foundation of the apostles, Jesus Christ being the chief cornerstone.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: So I laid out all of that to say this.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: This night before he was betrayed, he didn't take this lesson and give it on the Sermon of the Mount to the multitude.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: Why not?
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: Is it because it was not supposed to be ever seen by the multitude?
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: No.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: That's not one.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: It's because it's an intimate relationship thing that's about proclaiming a truth that's very individual, but is meant to be observed in the church.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: There is a lot of truths of God that are meant to be broadcast, that's meant to be broadcast to everybody.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: But there's an intimate relationship with the Lord that died for you, that he intended for it to be remembered inside the house, like the Passover was inside the house, among the family of those that follow closely with the Lord in obedience to his doctrines.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: That's why our communion, our fellowship dinner, our Lord's Supper, communion together is done by those that have joined in the church, the primitive Baptist church.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: There's so many of God's children that he died for.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: Every one of his children he died for equally.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Every one of his children, he you're going to be equal seats in heaven.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: Every one of his children, he broke his body for them.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: But this supper is meant to be someone who says, I believe that was for me, and I'm in communion or fellowship with those of like faith, like belief.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: That's why it's done in the house.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: It was done by the apostles because they're the foundation of the church.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: It was done in remembrance of him, but it is meant to be partaking of individually by each of us.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: As we go forward into that service, it's so important that while we do it all together, that it's very personal and individual.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: Each one of you that is partaking of the bread hears in your spirit, in your heart, Jesus said, This is my body which was broken for you.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: This is my blood which is shed.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: That's what Luke's account says, and one of the reasons I picked his, Luke's account says, which is shed for you.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: Um that it's it's personal, it's individual, it's intimate, and that's why it's done within the church congregation.
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: Um, there's many disciples of the Lord that aren't in the church, but I would proclaim this loudly, like Peter did on the day of Pentecost, that if you feel yourself to be a disciple and you want to be a follower of Jesus, what should we do?
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: He said, repent and be baptized, be added to the church.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: So and then continue steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: It says, and the breaking of bread, which I maintain is talking about this suffer, this service, the the Lord's Supper, and in prayer.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: That's the that's the church.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: That's what we're called to do.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: It's what we should do as disciples.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: When his disciples here that night went out, they went out after he rose from the grave.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: He told them at the end of Matthew's account to go and baptize in his name.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: He says, teaching them all to observe whatsoever I have commanded you.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: And that includes this ordinance he placed inside the church.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: Again, much more could be said, but we want to close this at this moment.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: Um, we'll have a song.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: If there's any that wish to join the church, you have that opportunity, and um, and then we'll take a break so that we can prepare for the Lord's Supper.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: Do you have a number?
- 42:33unknown: 231.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: We'd like to stand number two hundred and thirty-one.
