- 0:12Hello friends, Sean here. Thank you for tapping on play
- 0:16and welcoming me into your day. Happy Monday to you.
- 0:21I hope that the week ahead is looking like a good one because
- 0:23you and I have got a bit of territory to cover friend.
- 0:26We are going to be tackling the chapters of the 40s.
- 0:32Isaiah is middle-aged and we are working through chapters 41 to
- 0:3644. This, friends, you'll remember,
- 0:39is Isaiah speaking to the people of Israel after they have left
- 0:44their promised land and they are destitute and in exile in far
- 0:49away Babylon with the rising threat of Persia heading their
- 0:54way. Well, heading the way of the
- 0:55Babylonians who would eventually free them to go home.
- 0:58But we are not up to that yet. So you will hear of God's power.
- 1:03You will hear of a Saviour coming.
- 1:05You will hear of a seed. There are so many references to
- 1:10Jesus in Isaiah, which is why it's one of the the Old
- 1:13Testament books that is so often quoted in the New Testament
- 1:16because it just speaks forward into the time when Jesus would
- 1:21complete his ministry and be the game changer that God planned
- 1:25all along. Isaiah is a cool book, so we are
- 1:30going to continue reading and today we read Isaiah 41 which
- 1:33speaks about God being in control of the political events,
- 1:37the natural events and the historical events of that time.
- 1:42So this is Isaiah speaking words of comfort about the power of
- 1:45God to these people who feel like they are lost in the big
- 1:58story of the world and history. Which I don't know about you,
- 2:03but I sometimes feel a bit like that too.
- 2:05Lost in a much bigger story. So let us hear these words
- 2:10written to us. Wherever you are in Isaiah
- 2:13chapter 41, listen in silence before me.
- 2:19You lands beyond the sea. Bring your strongest arguments.
- 2:24Come now and speak. The court is ready for your
- 2:26case. Who has stirred up this king
- 2:29from the East, rightly calling him to God's service?
- 2:33Who gives this man victory over many nations and permits him to
- 2:36trample their kings under foot. With his sword he reduces armies
- 2:42to dust with his bow. He scatters them like chaff
- 2:46before the wind. He chases them away and goes on
- 2:49safely, though he is walking over unfamiliar ground.
- 2:54Who has such mighty deeds, summoning each new generation
- 2:58from the beginning of time. It is I, the Lord, the 1st and
- 3:04the last. I alone am he the lands beyond
- 3:10the sea watch in fear. Remote lands tremble and
- 3:14mobilize for war. The idol makers encourage one
- 3:18another, saying to each other be strong.
- 3:21The Carver encourages the Goldsmith, and the moulder helps
- 3:25at the anvil. Good, they say, it's coming
- 3:28along fine. Carefully they join the parts
- 3:31together, then fasten the thing in place so it won't fall over.
- 3:36But As for you, Israel, my servant Jacob, my chosen 1,
- 3:41descended from Abraham. My friend.
- 3:44I have called you back from the ends of the earth, saying you
- 3:48are my servant. For I have chosen you and will
- 3:52not throw you away. Don't be afraid, for I am with
- 3:56you. Don't be discouraged, for I am
- 4:00your God. I will strengthen you and help
- 4:03you. I will hold you up with my
- 4:06victorious right hand. See all your enemies lie there
- 4:11confused and humiliated. Anyone who opposes you will die
- 4:17and come to nothing. You will look in vain for those
- 4:21who tried to conquer you. Those who attack you will come
- 4:25to nothing. For I hold you by your right
- 4:28hand. I, the Lord your God.
- 4:31And I say to you, don't be afraid.
- 4:35I am here to help you, though you are a lowly worm.
- 4:39O Jacob, don't be afraid, people of Israel, for I will help you.
- 4:45I am the Lord, your Redeemer. I am the Holy One of Israel.
- 4:51You will be a new threshing instrument with many sharp
- 4:55teeth. You will tear your enemies
- 4:58apart, making chaff of mountains.
- 5:02You will toss them into the air, and the wind will blow them all
- 5:05away. A whirlwind will scatter them.
- 5:09Then you will rejoice in the Lord.
- 5:12You will glory in the Holy One of Israel, when the poor and
- 5:16needy search for water, and there is none, and their tongues
- 5:20are parched from thirst, then I, the Lord will answer them.
- 5:25I, the God of Israel, will never abandoned them.
- 5:30I will open up rivers for them and the high plateaus.
- 5:33I will give them fountains of water in the valleys.
- 5:37I will fill the desert with pools of water.
- 5:41Rivers fed by springs will flow across the parched ground.
- 5:46I will plant trees and the barren desert, cedar, Acacia,
- 5:50Myrtle, olives, Cypress, fir and pine.
- 5:55I'm doing this so all who see this miracle will understand
- 5:59what it means, that it is the Lord who has done this, the Holy
- 6:03One of Israel who created it. Present the case for your idols,
- 6:09says the Lord. Let them show what they can do,
- 6:13says the king of Israel. Let them try to tell us what
- 6:16happened long ago, so that we may consider the evidence.
- 6:20Or let them tell us what the future holds, so we can know
- 6:24what's going to happen. Yes, tell us what will occur in
- 6:27the days ahead. Then we will know you are gods.
- 6:31In fact, do anything good or bad, Do something that will
- 6:35amaze and frighten us. But no, you are less than
- 6:39nothing and can do nothing at all.
- 6:42Those who choose you pollute themselves.
- 6:46But I have stirred up a leader who will approach from the
- 6:49north, from the east. He will call on my name.
- 6:53I will give him victory over kings and Princess.
- 6:57He will trample them as a Potter treads on clay.
- 7:01Who told you from the beginning what would happen?
- 7:04Who predicted this? Making you admit that he was
- 7:07right. No one said a word.
- 7:11I was the 1st to tell Zion. Look, help is on the way.
- 7:17I will send Jerusalem a messenger with good news.
- 7:21Not one of your idols told you this.
- 7:24Not one gave any answer when I asked.
- 7:27See, they are all foolish, worthless things, and your idols
- 7:33are as empty as the wind. You make a convincing point,
- 7:47Lord, that you are bigger and greater and fundamentally more
- 7:53alive than any other would be. God help us place you above
- 8:00every other voice in our life and all these other empty,
- 8:04worthless, and dead idols that we find ourselves chasing after.
- 8:11May they submit to you. May we shift our hearts, unplug
- 8:17them from the temptations that seem to scream so loudly, and we
- 8:22just recommit ourselves to you, the Eternal God, the Creator,
- 8:27the only One who holds the future and the past in His
- 8:31hands. We love you, our Father, and we
- 8:36thank you for giving us Jesus and for loving us when you have
- 8:41no reason to except that you choose us.
- 8:46You call us your children, and you welcome us with your open
- 8:50arms. Thank you and we pray.
- 8:54All of this in the name of Jesus.
- 8:57Amen.
