- 0:03Speaker 1: It's e FT Live the spring training tour engineered by
- 0:08Speaker 1: fast and All. Check out fastball dot com for more information.
- 0:11Speaker 1: They're on the calendar. So are the Cleveland Guardians, Royals
- 0:15Speaker 1: Camp done, Guardians Camp now A's Camp tomorrow, Dodgers Friday,
- 0:20Speaker 1: Saturday and Sunday shows. Don't forget it will be live,
- 0:22Speaker 1: Mariners Camp, Rangers Camp. Also, AJ, you have double duty tonight,
- 0:28Speaker 1: a doubleheader, and you might be able to swing a
- 0:31Speaker 1: cocktail while you're doing that double header. First, a little
- 0:34Speaker 1: look at Guardians Camp this morning, bright and early, getting
- 0:38Speaker 1: those stretches in, AJ, did you like this part of
- 0:42Speaker 1: the job.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I love this part of the job.
- 0:46Speaker 3: The only problem with the guardian is.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Not sure if we can hear it? Yeah? Can you
- 0:51Speaker 2: not hear me?
- 0:53Speaker 4: I got you now, we got you now.
- 0:56Speaker 2: You know.
- 0:56Speaker 3: I did not like stretching because you never see a
- 0:59Speaker 3: cheat a switch before it's an antelope. So no, but
- 1:03Speaker 3: it was a good We had this conversation with a
- 1:05Speaker 3: couple of the fasten All people that actually are in
- 1:07Speaker 3: camp today with us. They asked me the same question,
- 1:10Speaker 3: did you like the stretching? And you know what the
- 1:11Speaker 3: stretching was for, It's changed now it used to be
- 1:14Speaker 3: what'd you do last night?
- 1:16Speaker 2: What was your fun?
- 1:17Speaker 3: What'd you do after practice?
- 1:18Speaker 2: Did you nap?
- 1:19Speaker 5: In?
- 1:19Speaker 3: All that stuff? Now these guys are too serious and
- 1:22Speaker 3: they're all like, no one's laughing. They're all just like
- 1:24Speaker 3: perfect high knees. We got to do the high knees.
- 1:27Speaker 3: We've got to do the butt kickers, you know, we
- 1:29Speaker 3: got to do all that stuff. We used to be
- 1:30Speaker 3: just a free for all. Now they have whistles and
- 1:33Speaker 3: all that. It's it's crazy now.
- 1:35Speaker 5: High wash, it's eyewash. You're not out there. If you're
- 1:38Speaker 5: going out there to prepare, you're cooked. Those dudes have been.
- 1:42Speaker 5: They have a sweat going before they get out there.
- 1:44Speaker 5: If they're strolling out like Jimmy Rollins style where it's
- 1:47Speaker 5: like he gets his uniform on at like three point
- 1:49Speaker 5: fifty nine and he's out there by four, you're cooked. Like,
- 1:53Speaker 5: that's not how That's not how it rolls.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Jimmy Rollinds catching strays for just being able to hop
- 1:59Speaker 1: field and do thing.
- 2:01Speaker 5: Oh he know, he was. He was the latest on
- 2:04Speaker 5: time person ever. He would Jimmy, you're listening. You know
- 2:08Speaker 5: exactly what I'm talking about. You were like Superman somehow
- 2:10Speaker 5: you came into the field, but never a panic in
- 2:13Speaker 5: the world.
- 2:14Speaker 2: This is is good.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Ready to go like you were, you were all ready,
- 2:17Speaker 5: it was. It was crazy. Never seen anything like it.
- 2:20Speaker 5: Always ready to get there on the field.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Oh boy. So Spencer swelling back and.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Hurston Waldrip both going under the knife and they don't
- 2:36Speaker 1: even know obviously when they'll be back. And they didn't
- 2:39Speaker 1: even confirm a timetable for now. Here's Mark Bowman, he said,
- 2:43Speaker 1: surgery for removing loose bodies. They Spencer today, Waldrip on Monday,
- 2:51Speaker 1: and the Braves are not providing a timeline. Walt Weis,
- 2:53Speaker 1: their manager, said he hopes both will be able to
- 2:55Speaker 1: pitch again this year. It's not just those two who
- 2:57Speaker 1: both should have been part of the rotation. Aldo Lopez
- 3:01Speaker 1: is a high injury risk just based on what's gone
- 3:03Speaker 1: on with him lately. Grant Holmes had injuries lately. Chrissale
- 3:07Speaker 1: has been their most durable guy. This is not good.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Who if you talk to a Red Sox fan, they'll
- 3:13Speaker 5: be like, Chrisale durable?
- 3:16Speaker 2: What?
- 3:16Speaker 5: But he won the sy young as a Brave. So
- 3:19Speaker 5: there's that.
- 3:21Speaker 2: That's tough.
- 3:22Speaker 5: It's tough, and it's not We went through it a
- 3:25Speaker 5: little bit yesterday. Fortunately it's bone spurs or bone chips.
- 3:31Speaker 5: I just hope they find out what is causing those
- 3:34Speaker 5: bone chips, because you don't just randomly go around like
- 3:38Speaker 5: creating bone chips in your body like something is causing that.
- 3:42Speaker 5: It's your body reacting to something. Hopefully they can figure
- 3:46Speaker 5: that out.
- 3:50Speaker 1: There's a lot going on with the player's side of
- 3:55Speaker 1: the situation here that runs all of baseball. Right you
- 3:58Speaker 1: have Major League Baseball Commissioner Manfred and all the people
- 4:02Speaker 1: blow him other side because someone said the other day, oh,
- 4:05Speaker 1: he's just the executive director.
- 4:06Speaker 4: No, that is the leader of the Players Association.
- 4:10Speaker 1: So the player's side that makes up our sport and
- 4:12Speaker 1: represents all of the players, that's the Players Association, the union,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and that is Tony Clark, who is now out. So
- 4:20Speaker 1: we'll start there and then we'll get to the succession plan.
- 4:23Speaker 1: So this broke yesterday. We had Ken and Evan Drelick
- 4:26Speaker 1: all over the story first saying Tony Clark's resigning, then
- 4:29Speaker 1: step two was passing, and Don Benetta putting out from
- 4:33Speaker 1: ESPN that Clark resigned after an internal investigation revealed he
- 4:38Speaker 1: had an inappropriate relationship with his sister in law who
- 4:41Speaker 1: had been hired by the union in twenty twenty three.
- 4:45Speaker 4: That's a Jerry Springer shit right theocratz.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Yeah, it's not what you're looking for from the leader.
- 4:53Speaker 5: And I want to reiterate what you said, like the
- 4:55Speaker 5: leader of the union, he is Rob Manford. As much
- 4:58Speaker 5: as you say Rob Manfred, you know he can be
- 5:00Speaker 5: the puppet for the owners. Okay, that's fine, you can
- 5:03Speaker 5: say whatever you think. Like, this is a huge thing
- 5:05Speaker 5: that the Players Association has to figure out. And people say, well,
- 5:10Speaker 5: people make mistakes, Well, it's when you're a public figure,
- 5:15Speaker 5: like they have to deal with that right now, and
- 5:16Speaker 5: it's a big thing.
- 5:19Speaker 4: It is a huge thing.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Aj and he is still under investigation by the FEDS
- 5:24Speaker 1: for if he did anything shady money wise. So there's
- 5:28Speaker 1: stuff going on there and we don't know the resolution
- 5:31Speaker 1: of that yet.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I think it's still ongoing.
- 5:33Speaker 1: So and to my knowledge, that's why there was a
- 5:37Speaker 1: group that was internally making sure everything was okay to
- 5:40Speaker 1: represent the player side. And with that, they're doing their
- 5:43Speaker 1: homework and they're like, wait a second, what is this
- 5:46Speaker 1: communication that's going on here? Then they speak to Tony,
- 5:50Speaker 1: they notify the players and the committee there, and then
- 5:54Speaker 1: the players call Tony on.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Monday and they're like, what's the deal.
- 5:58Speaker 1: It sounds like they essentially said, your toast, do you
- 6:01Speaker 1: want to announce it yourself or not? And then by
- 6:03Speaker 1: Tuesday morning we find out before his first meeting that's
- 6:06Speaker 1: set in camp and he meets with all thirty teams,
- 6:09Speaker 1: he's out.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Yeah, listen, this is just terrible situation. Honestly, I don't
- 6:17Speaker 3: know enough about this, but from reading this, there has
- 6:20Speaker 3: to be more to this, I feel like than what
- 6:22Speaker 3: we've gotten so far, and I'm sure Kenondrek and everyone
- 6:25Speaker 3: else is digging for it a little bit. This seems
- 6:29Speaker 3: like the.
- 6:32Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:32Speaker 3: I don't even want to get into this because this
- 6:34Speaker 3: just sucks for so many And I hate to get
- 6:36Speaker 3: into people's personal life because you don't know what anyone's
- 6:38Speaker 3: doing on a personal level unless you're living their life.
- 6:41Speaker 3: So listen, whatever Tony did, this seems like the way
- 6:45Speaker 3: for them just to get him to resign with a
- 6:49Speaker 3: little bit of dignity if there's more, which I obviously
- 6:51Speaker 3: hope there's not. But this just sucks, man. I don't
- 6:55Speaker 3: even I hate even talking about this.
- 6:57Speaker 2: It just sucks.
- 6:57Speaker 3: This whole thing sucks.
- 7:00Speaker 2: All right.
- 7:00Speaker 5: We got the Warby Parkers. I got the Raiders, but
- 7:04Speaker 5: one thing I upgraded to polarized. Sorry about it.
- 7:09Speaker 6: Yeah, these are good not only for wearing, but also
- 7:12Speaker 6: out in the sun. When I become that baseball coach
- 7:14Speaker 6: I always want to be with my kids. I got
- 7:15Speaker 6: the Hatchers. They're darker, a little bit wider for my face.
- 7:19Speaker 6: They fit perfect, They're comfortable. It's an easy process to
- 7:23Speaker 6: order these really really cool glasses.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I am a diehard Warby Parker fan. I do have
- 7:28Speaker 1: prescription glasses and I wear Warby Parker every day for
- 7:32Speaker 1: many years.
- 7:32Speaker 4: I'm excited about this one. Give it a shot.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Warby Parker gives you quality and better looking prescription I
- 7:37Speaker 1: wear at a fraction of the going price.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Our listeners get.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Fifteen percent off plus free shipping when they buy two
- 7:43Speaker 1: or more pairs of prescription glasses at Warbyparker dot com
- 7:46Speaker 1: slash foul. That's fifteen percent off. When you buy two
- 7:49Speaker 1: pairs of glasses at wa Rby Parker dot com slash foul.
- 7:55Speaker 1: After you purchase, they will ask you where you heard
- 7:56Speaker 1: about them. Please support our show and tell them foul
- 7:59Speaker 1: territories So what's next for the union. Players have been
- 8:03Speaker 1: meeting fast and furiously.
- 8:05Speaker 4: They had a meeting yesterday, which is Tuesday.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Bomb Nightingale said Bruce Meyer, who was kind of the
- 8:11Speaker 1: number two there and he's the union's lead negotiator, is
- 8:13Speaker 1: still going to be in that spot even if he
- 8:15Speaker 1: also becomes the interim executive director. So that was one
- 8:19Speaker 1: bit of news from Bob, and there's been a lot more.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Evan and Ken.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Came out with an article saying intriguing candidates emerge as
- 8:26Speaker 1: MLBPA debate successor for ousted leader Tony Clark. Names they
- 8:31Speaker 1: mentioned in there included Matt Nusbaum, who's part of the
- 8:35Speaker 1: general council or I think is the lead general counsel there.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Don Fair who used.
- 8:40Speaker 1: To work with the MLBPA back in the day and
- 8:42Speaker 1: then he went to the NHL side.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Daniel Murphy is on that picture.
- 8:45Speaker 1: He used to be part of the PA mix there.
- 8:50Speaker 1: And Andrew Miller is part of the mix currently. We've
- 8:53Speaker 1: had him on the show. So there's some names, there
- 8:55Speaker 1: could be others. It sounds like there's some dissension to
- 8:59Speaker 1: where some guys want to just get this roll in,
- 9:02Speaker 1: keep the train on the tracks. Go with the guy
- 9:04Speaker 1: who's already there and let him go. He's going to
- 9:06Speaker 1: be a part of the mix regardless. Others are like, hey,
- 9:09Speaker 1: let's take some time, let's make sure we get this right.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Let's make sure we maybe talk to other candidates. You
- 9:16Speaker 1: can speak to this, Kratz, because you've been part of
- 9:18Speaker 1: the union. You got to get a lot of people
- 9:20Speaker 1: on the same page. And they're a little busy right
- 9:22Speaker 1: now with spring training, so there's a lot going on.
- 9:25Speaker 5: I mean, it's better now than during the season. Like,
- 9:28Speaker 5: you don't want guys to have to worry about this
- 9:29Speaker 5: during the season. But when you're part of the subcommittee,
- 9:31Speaker 5: when you're part of the executive committee as a player,
- 9:35Speaker 5: you're representing the twelve hundred some odd players that are
- 9:42Speaker 5: saying yay, you're nay to certain things. And I would agree.
- 9:45Speaker 5: I would sit on the side of, hey, let's take
- 9:48Speaker 5: some time. Let let's not need to name somebody the
- 9:51Speaker 5: next forty eight hours. Nothing's going to happen. Nobody's attacking
- 9:55Speaker 5: your city, nobody's attacking the union. No, but like this
- 9:58Speaker 5: isn't like maybe baseball time to strike because Tony's out there,
- 10:02Speaker 5: executive directors out No, there is such a structure built,
- 10:07Speaker 5: such a game plan already built. Tony was really like
- 10:12Speaker 5: the rallying cry guy. He was a guy that sat
- 10:14Speaker 5: through the strike of ninety four and so he was
- 10:17Speaker 5: him along with some of the other over player player
- 10:21Speaker 5: reps or not player reps, but representatives from the players Association.
- 10:26Speaker 2: They saw it.
- 10:27Speaker 5: They saw that, and it's supposed to be there to
- 10:30Speaker 5: remind guys, hey, you know what, we need to stay unified.
- 10:34Speaker 5: That's where they need to find somebody. That's who they
- 10:38Speaker 5: need to find. They need to find somebody who's not
- 10:40Speaker 5: trying to politic their way into this role. They need
- 10:43Speaker 5: to try to find somebody who has the best intentions,
- 10:47Speaker 5: not somebody that's looking to get a major salary bump
- 10:50Speaker 5: because they're getting this role. And I don't think that
- 10:53Speaker 5: decision should be taken lightly. I think the next executive
- 10:56Speaker 5: director needs to be somebody who was respected on both sides,
- 11:01Speaker 5: respected by Major League Baseball, respected by the players, and
- 11:06Speaker 5: respected in the avenue. That this is all going to
- 11:09Speaker 5: be negotiated in lawyers like legal representatives, because there's a
- 11:15Speaker 5: lot of there's a lot of things that go on
- 11:18Speaker 5: that players may know what's going on, but when you
- 11:21Speaker 5: have people that went to school for this stuff that
- 11:24Speaker 5: are professionals in this realm. Sometimes I'm little against the
- 11:29Speaker 5: player being in this role. The executive director doesn't necessarily
- 11:34Speaker 5: negotiate this CBA. He's in there, he's part of it.
- 11:39Speaker 5: But just like Rob Manfred doesn't negotiate the CBA, there's
- 11:44Speaker 5: other people that are doing the negotiations, so those people
- 11:47Speaker 5: are still in place. To me, this needs to be
- 11:49Speaker 5: something that they didn't need to take time and they
- 11:52Speaker 5: need to get it right because they need to make
- 11:55Speaker 5: sure the union is still continue or continues to stay
- 12:00Speaker 5: galvanized as one unit and not factions of big time superstars,
- 12:07Speaker 5: mediocre players, Latin players, you know, Japanese players, players from
- 12:15Speaker 5: the South, players from the North. Like they have to
- 12:17Speaker 5: be one group and that's the best way that the
- 12:21Speaker 5: Players Association works.
- 12:23Speaker 4: I'll use a comp here too.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Aj Bud Seeleague was the commissioner for a long time
- 12:27Speaker 1: in Major League Baseball. He owned a team, He owned
- 12:29Speaker 1: the Brewers, right, and the commissioner is the person that
- 12:32Speaker 1: leads the charge with the owners. Right, they vote on
- 12:35Speaker 1: what they want to do, then commissioner plays that out.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Now it's Manford for a while he didn't own a team.
- 12:42Speaker 1: He was a lawyer and on the fight for a
- 12:44Speaker 1: long time. Then they bring him up to be the
- 12:45Speaker 1: next guy. So playing to Kratz's point, it could be
- 12:48Speaker 1: a former player. Doesn't have to be a former player.
- 12:52Speaker 3: No, it need to just be the best, like Eric said,
- 12:54Speaker 3: the best person for the job that can can encompass
- 12:56Speaker 3: all players, right, And I think there's no need to rush.
- 13:00Speaker 3: But this is a bargaining year, so you got to
- 13:02Speaker 3: put a little bit of maybe a fast forward on it,
- 13:04Speaker 3: but not a rush. Maybe you know, like when you
- 13:06Speaker 3: hit your your remote and it goes like one time
- 13:08Speaker 3: two times, may maybe put it one and a half
- 13:10Speaker 3: time instead of the four times, or it just zooms
- 13:12Speaker 3: through your show you have on your DVR. Right, so
- 13:16Speaker 3: there is a little bit of a rush. I don't
- 13:18Speaker 3: think that because of where they're at and they're bargaining
- 13:20Speaker 3: and they have they still have most of the team.
- 13:25Speaker 3: I think when we look back on it now, they
- 13:28Speaker 3: had Don Fear, then they had Michael Wiener who was
- 13:31Speaker 3: the successor for Don Fear. He obviously got sick, passed away,
- 13:36Speaker 3: horrible story. Then they hit the rush button. I feel like,
- 13:40Speaker 3: who can we get in well Tony Clark was there,
- 13:42Speaker 3: he was a player. He knows us, right. Boom, let's
- 13:44Speaker 3: all right, Yeah, let's so Tony Clark in there. Okay,
- 13:47Speaker 3: Tony Clark takes over. You can make the argument how
- 13:51Speaker 3: it went good or bad.
- 13:52Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 13:52Speaker 3: That's not for me to argue. But now you have
- 13:55Speaker 3: a situation here where you got to get it right
- 13:57Speaker 3: because it's a bargaining year, because there's going to be
- 13:59Speaker 3: so much on the table, with the salary cap stuff,
- 14:03Speaker 3: with the international draft stuff, with all the TV rights.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Everything we've been talking about, we're going to talk about
- 14:10Speaker 3: for the next ten months. You got to get this
- 14:12Speaker 3: one right, guys. You just have to get this one right.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Whether it's a player, a lawyer, somebody off the street
- 14:19Speaker 3: that we don't even know about.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Please please please. As a I.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Guess we're not members of the union anymore crowds because
- 14:26Speaker 3: we don't play anymore. But as a former member of
- 14:29Speaker 3: this union and someone who's pension and insurance relies on this,
- 14:32Speaker 3: please guys, just please get it right.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Yeah. I couldn't agree more.
- 14:38Speaker 5: I think it's important that they continue to stay unified.
- 14:42Speaker 5: I think it's important that they take their time. I'm
- 14:45Speaker 5: not saying take months to do this. I'm saying take
- 14:48Speaker 5: a week or two rather than a day or two.
- 14:50Speaker 5: I think the fast forward button is understood and agreed upon,
- 14:55Speaker 5: but I think there's also a sense that it is
- 15:00Speaker 5: bigger than you. And if you have somebody that has
- 15:02Speaker 5: an agenda that wants to take this job, I don't
- 15:05Speaker 5: think that's and I don't think that's the type of
- 15:07Speaker 5: leader that the union wants. So you know, I think
- 15:10Speaker 5: that subcommittee will hear from people, hear from names, and
- 15:15Speaker 5: hopefully they make the best choice.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I tried to make as many phone calls as possible.
- 15:20Speaker 1: I'm no Ken Rosenthal, not reporting on any story, but
- 15:22Speaker 1: the one consensus that I did get was that this
- 15:26Speaker 1: is a good thing.
- 15:27Speaker 4: For all sides. Not the actual story.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And the implications of what came out of what Tony
- 15:33Speaker 1: you know, was doing. But it was time because it
- 15:37Speaker 1: felt like there was a lot of distractions off the field,
- 15:39Speaker 1: and clearly we're learning about some of them, but it
- 15:42Speaker 1: felt like people were that was permeating, right. There was
- 15:45Speaker 1: a lot going on, and you want someone who's super
- 15:47Speaker 1: focused and who's almost like a nerd about this stuff,
- 15:50Speaker 1: and it's all they do, They eat sleep and breathe
- 15:51Speaker 1: it and you can call them in any time in
- 15:53Speaker 1: there around, right, Isn't that often how the best gms
- 15:56Speaker 1: are The commissioner It is a twenty four to seven job,
- 15:59Speaker 1: and it seemed to me like people felt as if
- 16:02Speaker 1: there were distractions going on here. So they're like, we
- 16:04Speaker 1: need someone who is strong, who is focused, who I
- 16:07Speaker 1: can reach at any time, and who's going to get
- 16:09Speaker 1: along well as best as possible.
- 16:11Speaker 4: With MLB.
- 16:12Speaker 1: You're going to have your battles. But from a fan perspective,
- 16:15Speaker 1: that's where I'm coming in here. I want games to
- 16:17Speaker 1: be played, you want things to keep rolling in, you
- 16:19Speaker 1: want things to get better.
- 16:20Speaker 4: One of the things that I thought was.
- 16:21Speaker 1: The best part of the last agreement between both sides
- 16:25Speaker 1: was to get a little lot of reaction going on,
- 16:26Speaker 1: so you can't just tank. NBA is going through a
- 16:29Speaker 1: massive tanking issue right now, and I think MLB has
- 16:32Speaker 1: done MLB and the players have done things to be
- 16:34Speaker 1: able to make that better. We've seen a lot of
- 16:36Speaker 1: rule changes that I think continue to improve the game.
- 16:38Speaker 1: So you want someone that's just going to be able
- 16:39Speaker 1: to speak the language, and I think that there was
- 16:43Speaker 1: a lot cleaned up just now as far as the
- 16:46Speaker 1: streamlining all of this, Yes, they have to get a
- 16:48Speaker 1: leader back in place. But if you're waiting on someone
- 16:52Speaker 1: to make a final call and that person is busy
- 16:55Speaker 1: with a million things going on that are off the
- 16:57Speaker 1: field issues, right, You've got a federal investigation, You've got
- 17:00Speaker 1: the sister in law situation going on here, which recovered
- 17:04Speaker 1: earlier in the show, that's not good.
- 17:06Speaker 4: You're busy, and you're busy for the wrong reasons. It's true.
- 17:10Speaker 1: We say whatever we want on this show, AJ and
- 17:12Speaker 1: that part is true. I say, I got told this
- 17:14Speaker 1: by multiple people that are in different worlds, right, some
- 17:17Speaker 1: more on the MLB side, some more on the player side,
- 17:18Speaker 1: and they were like, I'll tell you this. I think
- 17:20Speaker 1: everybody would agree. It's going to be a good thing.
- 17:22Speaker 1: It'll help get someone who's in there, who's focused.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll see.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Let's hope. That's all we can do is hope Scott.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Shake it up.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Engineered by Fastenall where industry meets innovation for more info
- 17:41Speaker 1: fastenall dot Com. Okay, so let's talk about MLB umpires
- 17:45Speaker 1: that can now request real time feedback on ball strike
- 17:48Speaker 1: calls during the upcoming season, and that includes the postseason
- 17:52Speaker 1: as well. They'll be able to practice this in spring training.
- 17:56Speaker 1: So here's the deal, because there actually has been some confusion.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I have heard some people that know the game that
- 18:02Speaker 1: think that an umpire can look at a pitch and
- 18:04Speaker 1: be like, oops, I don't know if I got that one,
- 18:07Speaker 1: and they can ask and then it's almost like an
- 18:09Speaker 1: umpire's challenge. Nope, that's not what this is. This is
- 18:13Speaker 1: real time feedback in between innings. So in between innings
- 18:16Speaker 1: and you gotta break, the umpire can go on his
- 18:19Speaker 1: little walkie talkie and be like, psh, hey on that
- 18:22Speaker 1: two to two to Judge and I wrung them up?
- 18:26Speaker 4: Was I wrong?
- 18:26Speaker 1: And they'd be like, yep, you were wrong. As usual,
- 18:30Speaker 1: Judge's zone is actually not that large. Okay, great, thank you.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I'll make sure I try and make that better next
- 18:38Speaker 1: time around. And also if he gives me shit next
- 18:40Speaker 1: a B then I'll just take it. But that's really
- 18:43Speaker 1: what's going to happen is you can ask every half
- 18:45Speaker 1: inning to look back at any pitches. Now you communicate
- 18:48Speaker 1: that you're not going to actually see it, but they'll
- 18:50Speaker 1: just tell you like, oh, on that too too, Yeah
- 18:52Speaker 1: you were wrong that one missed on the ABS challenge system, so.
- 18:55Speaker 4: It doesn't affect anything in game.
- 18:57Speaker 1: It's more to help you, I think, evolve aj during
- 19:00Speaker 1: the game when you're calling it.
- 19:01Speaker 4: As an umpire.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I like this, And instead of a player having
- 19:06Speaker 3: a run back to the iPad and say told you
- 19:09Speaker 3: that pictures a strike last at bat, umpires can actually
- 19:12Speaker 3: ask and then they might imagine this God and Eric apologize, Man,
- 19:16Speaker 3: I missed that call. I apologize you should have challenged it,
- 19:19Speaker 3: and yeah, I know we still wrung me up, crapy umpire.
- 19:24Speaker 3: So I like this. I think it keeps everyone accountable
- 19:27Speaker 3: and it helps umpires learn on the fly. I'm all
- 19:29Speaker 3: for this, making the game better, making umpires better, and
- 19:32Speaker 3: just making everybody happy.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Is it?
- 19:36Speaker 5: I never I never figured it out. Is it an
- 19:38Speaker 5: actual communication system or is it where they can talk
- 19:43Speaker 5: to them or do they because they said they'll make
- 19:46Speaker 5: a signal about a call and then they'll tell them,
- 19:49Speaker 5: so it's not a direct umpire talking to somebody.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Is it somebody talking to the umpire.
- 19:54Speaker 1: I can clarify all of this for you because I
- 19:56Speaker 1: did a lot of nerdy work since I was hearing
- 19:58Speaker 1: things that were so you can't do this during the game.
- 20:04Speaker 4: This has to happen in a half inning.
- 20:06Speaker 1: What you can do is you can do a quick
- 20:08Speaker 1: alert like hey, I'm go don't want to check that
- 20:10Speaker 1: pitch back. You can do that during the actual play
- 20:13Speaker 1: during games, right when we're in play. That could cause
- 20:16Speaker 1: a problem, and it was mentioned in this article which
- 20:19Speaker 1: included Evan Dryk and some others from the Athletic I
- 20:21Speaker 1: think Mitch Bannon on there our new host on Bluebird Territory.
- 20:25Speaker 4: But imagine if you're doing that and you're like, hey.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Bank that I want to bring that up during the
- 20:30Speaker 1: half inning and see if it was a ball or strike.
- 20:32Speaker 1: What if someone hears you and they're like, wait, so
- 20:34Speaker 1: you weren't confident about that pitch. So they did mention
- 20:37Speaker 1: that in the article because they're not going to tell
- 20:38Speaker 1: you that until the half inning.
- 20:39Speaker 4: What it does is it could speed up the process.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Let's say they wanted to look at three pitches during
- 20:44Speaker 1: that half inning, or have the person they're communicating with
- 20:47Speaker 1: right the operator, so.
- 20:49Speaker 4: Kratz, the operator's not going to talk to them.
- 20:51Speaker 1: They would call for this and be like, hey, it's
- 20:54Speaker 1: the middle of the fourth I think I messed one
- 20:56Speaker 1: or two up. In the top of the fourth. I
- 20:57Speaker 1: just want to get clarification, make sure I was right.
- 21:00Speaker 1: How did I do boop? They talk, they tell them,
- 21:03Speaker 1: so that's the process.
- 21:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, it's in between the half innings. My
- 21:09Speaker 5: thought was when I read it they were or how
- 21:13Speaker 5: it was. How I read it was, it was a signal,
- 21:16Speaker 5: you know. So it'll be fun for me to watch
- 21:19Speaker 5: different umpires and be like, oh, if he if he
- 21:22Speaker 5: grabs a side of his mask, that's the signal. He
- 21:24Speaker 5: wants them to check that pitch. And then at the
- 21:26Speaker 5: half inning they'll they'll give him the result of what
- 21:29Speaker 5: that pitch was. Because I love watching different intricacies Brian
- 21:33Speaker 5: and Nora. After every pitch he shifts his he shifts
- 21:37Speaker 5: his chest protector and he does something with his chest
- 21:41Speaker 5: protector every single time. You know, Vic Carrapozzo doesn't move
- 21:45Speaker 5: at all until it's time for strike three. He's the
- 21:48Speaker 5: one who's actually in that picture there. So I love
- 21:51Speaker 5: watching that kind of stuff. But I want to see
- 21:52Speaker 5: a little tick, like if they go check because.
- 21:56Speaker 4: Now they're not doing that. It's tech.
- 21:58Speaker 1: It's tech, so they'll be attack so they'll hit the teck,
- 22:03Speaker 1: but you'll look for them to like hit their belt
- 22:05Speaker 1: buckle and be like.
- 22:08Speaker 4: And get that.
- 22:08Speaker 2: That's what I mean.
- 22:09Speaker 1: It's it's not going to be like a sign. It's
- 22:12Speaker 1: not going to be a sign for that someone's watching
- 22:14Speaker 1: them on there. It'll be some button that they hit
- 22:16Speaker 1: and they want them to review.
- 22:20Speaker 2: And I want to see.
- 22:20Speaker 4: But is going to be subtle?
- 22:22Speaker 1: So if you're catching, I mean, are you going to
- 22:25Speaker 1: see the umpire trying to subtly just oh.
- 22:28Speaker 5: I'm not as I'm catching, I'm saying the bench will
- 22:30Speaker 5: see it.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Like, yeah, that's true.
- 22:32Speaker 2: There's there's an umpire. There's an umpire that doesn't use
- 22:35Speaker 2: the clicker. He has. He has hair bands on his
- 22:38Speaker 2: hand and.
- 22:39Speaker 5: He pulls them, pulls them to the one finger when
- 22:42Speaker 5: it's two strikes, when it's when it's three balls on
- 22:45Speaker 5: the other f on the other hand, that's how he
- 22:48Speaker 5: does the that's how he does his ball cat like.
- 22:50Speaker 2: All that kind of stuff is interesting to me.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I think this will cause more fights and injections. Why
- 22:57Speaker 1: because a JA this gives the umpire ammo. They didn't
- 23:01Speaker 1: have any ammo. And credit to MLBNPA right, who both agreed,
- 23:05Speaker 1: we're doing all of these things, but we're not really
- 23:07Speaker 1: giving the umpires as much access during a game, we
- 23:10Speaker 1: get to run, like you, guys both said, to the
- 23:13Speaker 1: dugout and check the tablets and see who was right
- 23:16Speaker 1: and wrong. And we've seen sometimes guys get tossed after
- 23:19Speaker 1: as they're screaming at the umpire, they talk to them
- 23:21Speaker 1: the next day. B umpire has a little revenge now too.
- 23:24Speaker 1: If he gets he gets a little shit from the player.
- 23:27Speaker 1: He could be like, okay, okay, I see you that
- 23:30Speaker 1: half inning he checks and he's like, nope, I was right.
- 23:32Speaker 1: And I don't know if an umpire is going to
- 23:34Speaker 1: bring that up, but he's certainly going to have the
- 23:36Speaker 1: amo if someone says something to him, be like did
- 23:38Speaker 1: you check that pitch?
- 23:39Speaker 4: Did you check that three two where you felt like
- 23:41Speaker 4: you had ball four? I got you, bro.
- 23:44Speaker 3: I dis agree, scout, because now there is no arguing
- 23:48Speaker 3: anymore because you know what the argument is. Cap your
- 23:50Speaker 3: helmet if you don't like to call, and we'll challenge
- 23:52Speaker 3: you and we'll see you right there. So I don't
- 23:53Speaker 3: think it's going to lead any more rejections. I just
- 23:55Speaker 3: think it's another tool to help the umpires improve. And
- 23:58Speaker 3: I'm here when umpires.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Get better, do you think that a catcher might be like, hey,
- 24:05Speaker 1: next half inning, you should just check a few of
- 24:07Speaker 1: your pitches.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Well, that might get somebody objective, but again there will
- 24:11Speaker 3: say challenge it if you don't like it.
- 24:15Speaker 5: That's the thing. Like they're they're not checking the egregious ones.
- 24:20Speaker 5: The catchers are going to go They're gonna challenge the
- 24:23Speaker 5: egregious ones. This is where this is where the money's
- 24:26Speaker 5: gonna be made. That fifty to fifty ball. And when
- 24:29Speaker 5: I say a fifty to fifty ball, it truly means
- 24:32Speaker 5: that umpires call that pitch fifty percent of the time
- 24:36Speaker 5: of ball fifty percent of the time a strike.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Who was right?
- 24:41Speaker 5: Because now there's it's black and white. Now there's no
- 24:46Speaker 5: gray area. It is you were either right or you
- 24:49Speaker 5: were wrong. And you can see the progression on the
- 24:51Speaker 5: screen for the podcast, we have a we have a
- 24:54Speaker 5: progression of what umpires zones look like throughout how they've
- 24:59Speaker 5: changed since two thousand and seven to twenty five and
- 25:02Speaker 5: twenty five. To me, it's interesting because there's different times
- 25:06Speaker 5: when they've kind of implemented different like objectives. Hey, our
- 25:11Speaker 5: objective starting twenty twenty five, which teams found out in
- 25:16Speaker 5: spring training I think it was, or maybe in the
- 25:18Speaker 5: winter meetings I forget was, Hey, we're going to call
- 25:21Speaker 5: the tighter zone. We're going to call the actual zone.
- 25:24Speaker 5: It shows over an entire year, it kind of shrunk
- 25:27Speaker 5: on the sides a little bit. Back in two thousand,
- 25:31Speaker 5: I think it was fourteen or fifteen, they said, hey,
- 25:34Speaker 5: we're going to make an onus about not making the
- 25:37Speaker 5: zones so.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Wide and more top to bottom.
- 25:41Speaker 5: Ironically, you know, the four seam fastball was really starting
- 25:44Speaker 5: to get some life pun intended, but it was something
- 25:48Speaker 5: that it shows umpires overall can make adjustments and players
- 25:53Speaker 5: can make adjustments too. But it's such a cool graphic
- 25:56Speaker 5: that we just showed.
- 25:59Speaker 4: There it is again.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yeah, two thousand and seven was kind of brutal compared
- 26:03Speaker 1: to what it looks like now in twenty twenty five.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Look at that chunky amiba in two thousand and seven.
- 26:09Speaker 4: Ah, and now how different strike.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Zones a differently. It looks you'll be called differently though,
- 26:15Speaker 3: so you can say people are like, oh, they sucked
- 26:17Speaker 3: in two thousand and seven, but that was the strike
- 26:20Speaker 3: zone that we were given. Players make adjustments. Talk to
- 26:22Speaker 3: any player, they'll adjust to what's being called, right, and
- 26:25Speaker 3: it's gotten tighter because we've gotten better technology. And over
- 26:28Speaker 3: the years the technology has gotten better and better, and
- 26:30Speaker 3: so have the umpires and so have the hitters. So yeah,
- 26:33Speaker 3: it's a natural evolution of what happens with technology and
- 26:37Speaker 3: players and us.
- 26:40Speaker 1: And we can do a separate segment on this, but
- 26:42Speaker 1: just to clarify for people, we're not losing the strike
- 26:45Speaker 1: zone box.
- 26:45Speaker 4: On the games that have them.
- 26:47Speaker 1: There will be a delay though they'll have a I
- 26:49Speaker 1: think it's a nine second delay to put the game
- 26:52Speaker 1: broadcast out. That they have some separation there so the
- 26:55Speaker 1: players can't be sitting there and who knows is that,
- 26:58Speaker 1: I guess aj so that they don't have some system
- 27:01Speaker 1: where someone's seeing it in real time and trying to
- 27:03Speaker 1: tell someone to challenge it, even though you have to
- 27:06Speaker 1: do an instant challenge, but so that someone doesn't like
- 27:08Speaker 1: like this and this is oh because they saw the
- 27:10Speaker 1: sign from someone.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Yes take.
- 27:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it's I also watched the Triple A
- 27:20Speaker 5: game where the guy hesitated too long. He took one
- 27:24Speaker 5: step across the plate and he was like, oh, it
- 27:27Speaker 5: looked like he forgot that they had another challenge left
- 27:30Speaker 5: because it was in It was in extra innings and
- 27:34Speaker 5: he tapped on it and the umpire was like, nope, sorry,
- 27:38Speaker 5: and there had already been like six challenges at that
- 27:41Speaker 5: point in the game, so the umpire was having a
- 27:44Speaker 5: pretty tough day. M hmm.
- 27:47Speaker 1: I just want to conclude by saying that many people
- 27:51Speaker 1: are underrating how fun this is going to be. You know,
- 27:53Speaker 1: we put stuff out there about this and sometimes it
- 27:56Speaker 1: gets loved, but it doesn't get as many like views
- 27:58Speaker 1: and clicks as I think because I don't know if
- 28:00Speaker 1: people realize how fun this is going to be. The
- 28:02Speaker 1: pitch clock ended up being a big success for most
- 28:04Speaker 1: people that wanted to speat the game up. This is
- 28:06Speaker 1: going to add a wrinkle inside the game that I
- 28:09Speaker 1: think is going to be super fun, especially for the
- 28:12Speaker 1: in game experience. If you're a fan and you think
- 28:14Speaker 1: you got it or you're just pissed about a call,
- 28:16Speaker 1: and then the place is going to go freaking crazy,
- 28:19Speaker 1: just like I mean, AJ you're a big football fan
- 28:21Speaker 1: where somebody, you know, where the coach throws the red
- 28:24Speaker 1: flag and fans freak out.
- 28:26Speaker 4: They're like challenge that.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll see, We'll see. I can't wait to see
- 28:32Speaker 3: it in action, though. I'm excited to see this.
- 28:34Speaker 5: I'm glad it's by the players and not by and
- 28:37Speaker 5: not by the coaches or some replay guy. I honestly,
- 28:41Speaker 5: when they first came out replaced, I thought it should
- 28:44Speaker 5: be the players and then you have more more challenges,
- 28:48Speaker 5: but the players should challenge it.
- 28:49Speaker 2: I would. I would love to see it because there's
- 28:52Speaker 2: so many dudes who are like, oh, check that. Check
- 28:54Speaker 2: we kept it.
- 28:55Speaker 5: We kept We kept a stat the one year, how
- 28:58Speaker 5: many times one person I won't say his name said
- 29:01Speaker 5: check that and he was wrong? And it was it
- 29:04Speaker 5: got like six or seven all of a sudden, you'd
- 29:06Speaker 5: all of a sudden be like, hey, you're not allowed
- 29:08Speaker 5: to challenge. If he challenges something, you're not allowed to challenge.
- 29:11Speaker 5: And I think the same thing is going to happen
- 29:12Speaker 5: with the strike zone.
- 29:16Speaker 4: It's gonna be fun.
- 29:17Speaker 1: We'll keep talking about We'll keep asking players about it too.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Thanks to Fastenall for sponsoring the segment Industrial Supplies Innovative Solutions.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Want to learn more, check out Fastenall dot com for
- 29:28Speaker 1: more information. Bet'mjam Futures al Cy Young. Hi, these are
- 29:40Speaker 1: the trends. So we went over this the other day,
- 29:42Speaker 1: but now we've got the trends report, So I like
- 29:45Speaker 1: to point this out. Like yesterday the surprise topic was
- 29:48Speaker 1: Roman Anthony getting a ton of love on MVP based
- 29:51Speaker 1: on the what plus two thousand odds that he's running.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Highest ticket percentage for al Cy Young is Garrett Crochet
- 30:00Speaker 1: point two percent, so that means he's getting six point
- 30:04Speaker 1: two percent of the picks. As far as handles where
- 30:07Speaker 1: the money is going on the picks, thirteen point three
- 30:10Speaker 1: percent to Kyle Bradish, who is the biggest liability liability
- 30:16Speaker 1: meaning if Bradish wins, bet MGM takes the biggest hit.
- 30:20Speaker 1: And the odds leader, of course is Trek Scoogle at
- 30:22Speaker 1: plus three hundred. Your thoughts here, I.
- 30:25Speaker 5: Mean, I love the plus four thousand that I'm getting
- 30:28Speaker 5: for Bradish.
- 30:29Speaker 2: I do really like that.
- 30:30Speaker 5: I think there are a couple names ahead of there
- 30:34Speaker 5: that if you're not going the Crochet Scooble route, which
- 30:37Speaker 5: are respectively Crochet's four hundred plus four hundred and then
- 30:42Speaker 5: Schoobles at plus three hundred. It's like you're getting some
- 30:46Speaker 5: nice numbers on that. Like that is that shows you
- 30:49Speaker 5: how wide open this could be? And is Scoobale going
- 30:52Speaker 5: to be the third ever three consecutive Cy Young Award winner.
- 30:57Speaker 2: That's tough to do.
- 30:58Speaker 5: Only twice has it ever been done, and he do
- 31:00Speaker 5: it for the third time. To me the name on
- 31:03Speaker 5: the list that really brings me the most value. And
- 31:06Speaker 5: also this could be his year because of based on
- 31:10Speaker 5: you know who else is on his pitching staff, Hunter Brown.
- 31:14Speaker 5: If you're paying me thirteen hundred plus thirteen hundred for
- 31:18Speaker 5: Hunter Brown, I'm gonna put something on that because I
- 31:21Speaker 5: feel like his next step, his next step in maturation.
- 31:25Speaker 5: Obviously he's got to stay healthy as anybody on this list,
- 31:28Speaker 5: but it's gonna be Can he be that ace? Can
- 31:32Speaker 5: he be that ace now that Framber's gone? Can he say, Okay,
- 31:35Speaker 5: I'm taking the next step, because if he does, he's
- 31:39Speaker 5: gonna best all these guys.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I like it interesting to me that these trends when
- 31:44Speaker 1: you see Bradish getting a lot of love right now,
- 31:46Speaker 1: will they fully let him eat in his first season
- 31:48Speaker 1: back from hope injury, first full season back from injury
- 31:51Speaker 1: he came back last year. Of course, whether you're watching
- 31:53Speaker 1: the action on the field, court, ice, whatever it is,
- 31:56Speaker 1: there is in any sport odds boost token for you
- 31:59Speaker 1: to score a big or payout go to betmgam dot
- 32:02Speaker 1: com or the betmgm app to go check.
- 32:04Speaker 4: That out and apply that boost.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Gambling problem or concerned, there's help called one ade hundred
- 32:08Speaker 1: Gambler
