2:18
Speaker 3: the show. The man from the Charleston Convention of iSER Bureau,
2:22
Speaker 3: Tim Brady, Good morning, sir, how are you.
2:24
Speaker 6: I'm great, Dave. You know, I think, like a lot
2:26
Speaker 6: of people, still trying to process John Cena's heel turn
2:29
Speaker 6: and elimination Chamber Saturday night. But beyond that, man, I'm great.
2:34
Speaker 3: You know, I don't I don't watch a lot of
2:37
Speaker 3: wrestling these days. I haven't watched it in years. However,
2:41
Speaker 3: I did see a lot of feed and of course
2:43
Speaker 3: we have the show my man Hollywood. Jeff Petty does
2:45
Speaker 3: his podcast here and that seemed to be all of
2:48
Speaker 3: the all the rage was was the John Cena heel
2:51
Speaker 3: turn on the pay per view I guess Saturday night,
2:54
Speaker 3: is that right? Yeah?
2:54
Speaker 6: Saturday night, at the end of Elimination Chamber, he went,
2:58
Speaker 6: he went heel and attacked Cody Rhodes. You know, It's
3:00
Speaker 6: a big deal because in the wrestling world, nobody ever
3:03
Speaker 6: thought John Cena would turn heel. You know, he's holds
3:06
Speaker 6: the record for most make a wishes granted, like he's.
3:09
Speaker 3: A he's a hero in that community.
3:11
Speaker 6: His whole vibe has been hustle, loyalty, respect, and so
3:15
Speaker 6: the heel turn was it caught a lot of people
3:17
Speaker 6: off guard.
3:17
Speaker 3: It was a shocking moment.
3:18
Speaker 6: And uh yeah, still, as I said, I'm still trying
3:21
Speaker 6: to process it.
3:22
Speaker 3: Care if you have Matt Sutton plenty to talk about.
3:24
Speaker 6: I'm sure the texts have gone and Adam, well, you
3:29
Speaker 6: just you just basically it's like you were reading through
3:31
Speaker 6: the text threat on my phone between the three of
3:34
Speaker 6: us all weekend long.
3:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, anyway, I want to get into this a little bit,
3:37
Speaker 3: but we're here to talk now, and I want to
3:39
Speaker 3: get in this a little bit later on with the mayor.
3:41
Speaker 3: But it was another weekend him here in the capital
3:44
Speaker 3: city with a ton of things going on. I mean,
3:46
Speaker 3: and I know I'll leave something out, but you had
3:48
Speaker 3: the Celtic Calling event which wrapped up yesterday. Saturday night
3:52
Speaker 3: was the festival fundraiser. There was a huge wrestling event
3:55
Speaker 3: and not kind of wrestling. You're talking about actual, actual, actual,
4:00
Speaker 3: actual wrestling youth. The wrestling event, the Winter Blues Farmers
4:03
Speaker 3: Farmer's Market was at the Kybleseum Convention Center. Saturday night,
4:07
Speaker 3: capacity gathering at Embversity Embassy Suites for the Marshall University
4:11
Speaker 3: Court Back Club at Charleston's Beach Party. I was there
4:13
Speaker 3: for that. I'm sure we left something off, but man,
4:18
Speaker 3: my point is there's a whole lot of stuff going
4:20
Speaker 3: on in the capital city this past weekend.
4:22
Speaker 6: Yeah, and I go back to a conversation that we
4:24
Speaker 6: had the last time I was here, Dave, and I
4:26
Speaker 6: think we see the model, and the model works, and
4:29
Speaker 6: it is when we combine all of these things were
4:32
Speaker 6: all better. You know, the West Virginia Youth Wrestling Association
4:36
Speaker 6: state championships that you mentioned on Saturday, I think, you know,
4:42
Speaker 6: certainly brought a lot of people to town. We know that,
4:44
Speaker 6: for a fact, you couldn't shoehorn another person into a
4:46
Speaker 6: hotel room in Charleston this weekend. And I think that
4:50
Speaker 6: trickles down and it it people go to see the
4:54
Speaker 6: Celtic Calling festivities while they're in town, they go out
4:56
Speaker 6: to eat, and they realize there's something cool happening in
4:58
Speaker 6: downtown Charleston. So you know, the model of combining events
5:02
Speaker 6: and having these robust weekends make it a more attractive
5:06
Speaker 6: city for locals and visitors.
5:08
Speaker 3: And again, I think it's interesting and that you did
5:11
Speaker 3: talk about that the last time you were here, that
5:12
Speaker 3: people say, well, you know, there's all these different activities
5:15
Speaker 3: going on, but they don't There was a school of thought,
5:17
Speaker 3: I guess at one time that okay, just one activity
5:20
Speaker 3: at a time, but that's not necessarily the case because again,
5:24
Speaker 3: you take the wrestling event for example, people aren't going
5:28
Speaker 3: to be there the entire time these sporting events. Their
5:31
Speaker 3: kid may have their activity at two o'clock in the afternoon,
5:34
Speaker 3: then they don't have to be back until like one
5:36
Speaker 3: o'clock the next day or whatever. So that's a lot
5:39
Speaker 3: of downtime to go to the restaurants and go to
5:41
Speaker 3: the bars, or go to the Celtic Calling event or
5:44
Speaker 3: all these other events that were going on as well.
5:46
Speaker 6: Yeah. I happened to be downtown when the Celtic Calling
5:48
Speaker 6: parade went down Capitol Street and I saw a lot
5:50
Speaker 6: of people in very clearly wrestling gear. You know, they're
5:55
Speaker 6: not the gear, but you know, like sweatshirts, wrestling mom sweatshirt. Right,
5:58
Speaker 6: So we saw people that had come in for wrestling
6:03
Speaker 6: taking part in in those activities, and it just makes
6:05
Speaker 6: the city a more exciting, more vibrant place. Vibrant is
6:09
Speaker 6: the word I'm looking for there.
6:10
Speaker 3: Talking to Tim Brady again from the Charleston CVB, but
6:12
Speaker 3: Dave Allen show in five Adyline brought to you in
6:14
Speaker 3: part by Bridge Valley. Their Win Academy can provide free
6:17
Speaker 3: college credit in nursing and advanced manufacturing to students while
6:20
Speaker 3: they're still in high school. Visitbridge Valley dot edu slash
6:23
Speaker 3: Win Academy for more information. All Right, the main reason
6:26
Speaker 3: I want to have you here, though, announcement was made
6:28
Speaker 3: that TBT is coming back.
6:30
Speaker 6: Yep, TBT returning to Charleston July eighteenth to the twenty
6:33
Speaker 6: third and maybe longer. There's an interesting ticket model this
6:37
Speaker 6: year that we can talk about. But yeah, I remember
6:42
Speaker 6: very clearly talking about TBT when it was here in
6:45
Speaker 6: twenty one and twenty two and saying I think the
6:48
Speaker 6: model is let's host it for a couple of years,
6:52
Speaker 6: let the regional go somewhere else, and then bring it
6:55
Speaker 6: back and generate that enthusiasm, and we saw that in
6:58
Speaker 6: practice this week because we got a lot of really
7:01
Speaker 6: positive response that TBT was coming back in twenty twenty five,
7:05
Speaker 6: In twenty three, it was in Wheeling, in twenty four,
7:07
Speaker 6: it was in Pittsburgh. They're coming back to Charleston. They
7:10
Speaker 6: want to be in Charleston. They sell a lot of
7:13
Speaker 6: tickets in Charleston, so we're excited to bring them back
7:16
Speaker 6: in July. And there's an incentivized ticket model where you
7:19
Speaker 6: could theoretically see the entire tournament play out in Charleston
7:23
Speaker 6: if ticket sales are strong. After you get through the
7:26
Speaker 6: regional for the next round, they look at the top
7:29
Speaker 6: four selling sites ticket sales sites, and then host that
7:32
Speaker 6: next round there. So there is a model where if
7:35
Speaker 6: Best Virginia continues to win and ticket sales are strong,
7:40
Speaker 6: the entire tournament up to and including the championship game
7:43
Speaker 6: could be played at the Charleston Coliseum. So that's exciting
7:46
Speaker 6: as well.
7:47
Speaker 3: Indeed, it is, and it's amazing Tim to me how
7:51
Speaker 3: popular that this thing is. But when you have teams.
7:54
Speaker 3: You mentioned Best Virginia and you have heard that when
7:56
Speaker 3: you have these teams that people remember the names because
8:00
Speaker 3: not that far removed from their playing days for me,
8:02
Speaker 3: a couple of years for most of them. You know,
8:03
Speaker 3: people here are gonna love it. They are, and it's funny.
8:06
Speaker 3: I had this conversation with Tony Curriedy last week. It's
8:10
Speaker 3: also about the name on the front of the jersey, right,
8:12
Speaker 3: Like some of the players will change. Some of the
8:14
Speaker 3: guys that you recognize will be back. John Flowers still involved,
8:18
Speaker 3: some of the other guys that came through the program
8:20
Speaker 3: that people recognize or are obviously still involved. But it's
8:23
Speaker 3: also it's at a time of year where there is
8:25
Speaker 3: no other basketball being played. There's really no collegiate sports.
8:29
Speaker 3: So if you are a WVU or and I have
8:31
Speaker 3: to say Marshall the Herd, that team has not been
8:34
Speaker 3: officially announced yet, although we do anticipate that they'll be
8:37
Speaker 3: in it, but they've not been announced yet. You know,
8:41
Speaker 3: people who are passionate about college sports, this is the
8:45
Speaker 3: time of year where there's nothing else to sort of
8:47
Speaker 3: feed that jones. So people buy in and get excited
8:51
Speaker 3: because there is nothing else right at that period of
8:54
Speaker 3: time to sort of.
8:55
Speaker 6: Scratch that itch. So that's exciting. And I will say,
9:00
Speaker 6: and I can just preface this, there will likely be
9:04
Speaker 6: a third team with West Virginia Ties participating in the
9:09
Speaker 6: Charleston Regional in July, so keep your eyes and ears
9:13
Speaker 6: open for more information about that as it comes available.
9:16
Speaker 6: And the bikes are on their way back to USA.
9:19
Speaker 6: Cite that Yeah, USA Cycling. The second of our five
9:22
Speaker 6: year contract returns May nineteenth to the twenty sixth, and
9:25
Speaker 6: I have to say a big thank you to Spilman
9:28
Speaker 6: Thomas Battle are presenting sponsor this year. They've signed on
9:31
Speaker 6: to be our local presenting sponsor for the next four years.
9:34
Speaker 6: So certainly want to say a big thank you to
9:37
Speaker 6: Mike Basil and the team at Spilman Thomas Battle for
9:41
Speaker 6: signing on. But we're really excited and this year, Dave,
9:44
Speaker 6: another really cool thing that I'm excited about with the
9:47
Speaker 6: USA Cycling Pro Road Nationals is the addition of Paracycling,
9:51
Speaker 6: bringing a whole new classification of athletes of different abilities
9:56
Speaker 6: to Charleston to compete for their national championships as well.
10:00
Speaker 6: So we'll see paracycling in the city of Charleston, and
10:04
Speaker 6: I'm excited to bring the athletes here and give them
10:06
Speaker 6: a great experience, and I'm excited for our community to
10:09
Speaker 6: be exposed to these pair of athletes and what their
10:12
Speaker 6: abilities really are. It's going to be really exciting and
10:15
Speaker 6: it's going to be a lot of fun.
10:16
Speaker 3: And last year, I mean, this thing was so big
10:19
Speaker 3: and you knew, I don't know, when you and the
10:21
Speaker 3: mayor and others announced this, you thought it was going
10:23
Speaker 3: to be big. But I think it even surprised you
10:26
Speaker 3: folks by how big and how the city really embrace
10:29
Speaker 3: not just the city, but the entire Canal Valley in
10:32
Speaker 3: this part of West Virginia really embraced the entire event.
10:34
Speaker 6: And that's the word Dave, and I've used it a
10:36
Speaker 6: lot over the course of the last year, and that
10:38
Speaker 6: is embraced. The community really embraced this race at a
10:43
Speaker 6: level that we didn't anticipate. We knew it was going
10:45
Speaker 6: to be big, we did not anticipate, as you said,
10:47
Speaker 6: how big it was going to be. And that just
10:50
Speaker 6: really fueled me to really put the work in and
10:53
Speaker 6: be excited about twenty twenty five and beyond, because the
10:56
Speaker 6: enthusiasm in this community was contagious that week. And I've
11:00
Speaker 6: told people this multiple times that race last year, that
11:04
Speaker 6: event last year was the most rewarding project that I've
11:07
Speaker 6: ever worked on in my professional career. To see the
11:09
Speaker 6: community come out and embrace those racers and the athletes
11:13
Speaker 6: and the races themselves was just it was It was
11:17
Speaker 6: really satisfying and I can't wait to grow on that.
11:22
Speaker 2: UH.
11:23
Speaker 5: This year, I.
11:23
Speaker 6: Will say that, you know, we're going to start some
11:25
Speaker 6: some pretty robust and extensive volunteer recruitment over the course
11:30
Speaker 6: of the next couple of weeks. We're already recruiting, but
11:33
Speaker 6: we're going to launch a campaign to recruit volunteers. We
11:35
Speaker 6: need we need more volunteers this year. So what hope
11:38
Speaker 6: are we talking about for a volunteers I would I
11:41
Speaker 6: would like to have between two hundred and two hundred
11:43
Speaker 6: and fifty volunteers signed up for the week.
11:44
Speaker 3: And what exactly do those volunteers do?
11:46
Speaker 6: You know, a lot of what they do is just
11:49
Speaker 6: crowd and traffic control, serving as race course martials, race marshals.
11:53
Speaker 6: You know, certainly there's police presidence at the major intersections.
11:57
Speaker 7: UH.
11:57
Speaker 6: And I have to say thank you the Charleston Police
11:59
Speaker 6: Department that this is a heavy lift. In all the
12:01
Speaker 6: city departments, streets, parking, public works, everybody pitches in. It's
12:06
Speaker 6: an amazing team effort. But the volunteers, you know, they
12:10
Speaker 6: keep people off the road, they keep cars off of
12:12
Speaker 6: the off of the course. They're really important. The volunteers
12:16
Speaker 6: are critical to the success of the race. It's it's
12:21
Speaker 6: not a lot of hard work. It can be some
12:23
Speaker 6: long hours, but uh, it's also really fun and fulfilling work.
12:28
Speaker 3: And won't be along TOI we'll be talking about regatta.
12:30
Speaker 3: We should see some announcements. I would think, come it
12:32
Speaker 3: up soon. I'll get into that with the mayor a
12:33
Speaker 3: little bit. With those announcements.
12:34
Speaker 6: Yeah, I would imagine you'll see we're got to entertainment
12:36
Speaker 6: announcements coming soon. We've and there's a lot of other
12:39
Speaker 6: things coming up this summer. Dave that in June there's
12:41
Speaker 6: an event called the Great Race that I'm love to
12:43
Speaker 6: come back and talk about as it gets a little
12:45
Speaker 6: bit closer. But the Great Races. Think about the Cannonball
12:49
Speaker 6: Run and this notion of cars racing from city to city, right,
12:54
Speaker 6: it's antique cars that the travelist circuit across the country
12:58
Speaker 6: and they race from city to and I say race
13:01
Speaker 6: in the sense that they all drive from city to
13:04
Speaker 6: city in their timed It's not like they're racing on
13:06
Speaker 6: our highways. But it's a timed it's a time to
13:09
Speaker 6: vent and they go from city to city, and I
13:11
Speaker 6: think they're in Frankfort, Kentucky the night before they come here,
13:14
Speaker 6: and they'll be here on a Thursday in Charleston. We're
13:16
Speaker 6: going to close down the boulevard that night and do
13:18
Speaker 6: some music at Hadad and welcome these racers to town.
13:22
Speaker 6: And then they leave out the next morning and go
13:24
Speaker 6: to their next destination. But that'll be cool. That's in June.
13:26
Speaker 6: Happy to come back and talk about that. A ton
13:28
Speaker 6: of stuff coming up this summer, Dave, and it's super exciting,
13:32
Speaker 6: and I'm leaving off two or three things that I
13:34
Speaker 6: don't want to tip my hat on, but summer is
13:37
Speaker 6: going to be a lot of fun in the city
13:38
Speaker 6: of Charlestown.
13:39
Speaker 3: Jex says, Remember growing up, no gen xer ever thought
13:43
Speaker 3: hul Cogan would turn also then he went in woo.
13:47
Speaker 5: You know.
13:48
Speaker 6: There's a quote about hull Cogan that I can't share
13:50
Speaker 6: on this radio program from the Iron Chic, but I
13:53
Speaker 6: will say that I saw a lot of that sentiment
13:56
Speaker 6: over the weekend regarding seen as he'll turn in. When
14:00
Speaker 6: Hogan joined the nWo is the third member. I think
14:03
Speaker 6: it shocked a lot of people, and a lot of
14:05
Speaker 6: people were shocked Saturday night. I love that I just
14:07
Speaker 6: spent ten minutes talk to me about all of this
14:09
Speaker 6: great stuff coming up at the City of Charleston, and
14:11
Speaker 6: the passionate wrestling community still wants to talk about seeing
14:15
Speaker 6: as heel turn.
14:16
Speaker 3: Well, guess what I have another text about wrestle. Let's
14:18
Speaker 3: do it. We'll do this. I'll let you go. I'd
14:20
Speaker 3: like to know what the CEO of the CVB means
14:23
Speaker 3: by actual wrestling? Was Travis Scott in Charleston or was
14:26
Speaker 3: he at an actual wrestling event in Toronto? I'll give
14:29
Speaker 3: you one guess, because that one came to me personally.
14:31
Speaker 3: Who that's from.
14:31
Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess what I meant was amateur Olympic style wrestling,
14:38
Speaker 6: you know the kind that Kurt Angle did before he
14:40
Speaker 6: joined the WWE.
14:43
Speaker 3: I think you know.
14:43
Speaker 6: The Travis Scott part of this is one of the
14:46
Speaker 6: most fascinating things. I was reading this morning that he's
14:48
Speaker 6: actually been training at one of the WWE Legends wrestling schools.
14:53
Speaker 6: He's going to actually get in the ring. But I didn't.
14:57
Speaker 6: I guess actual wrestling was the wrong word. Olympic style
15:01
Speaker 6: wrestling is is really Just remember that famous the slap
15:05
Speaker 6: heerd around the world that doctor d David Schultz did
15:08
Speaker 6: to John Stossel on twenty twenty in nineteen eighty five.
15:11
Speaker 6: Just remember that it's real to me, damn it.
15:16
Speaker 3: Tim Brady for the Charleston cv B, always pleasure having
15:18

20:51
Speaker 3: my opinion. It was a horrible look for our country.
20:55
Speaker 3: And I'm not necessarily talking about the contents of what was,

21:22
Speaker 3: I mean, Ronald Reagan didn't do that, Nixon, the Bushes, Obama, Biden, Clinton, Ford, Carter.
21:26
Speaker 3: None of the presidents during my lifetime behaved that way
21:32
Speaker 3: that I'm aware of it, That did any presidents prior
21:34
Speaker 3: to my birth. It was embarrassing. And again I'm not
21:37
Speaker 3: necessarily talking about what the president said, but the way
21:42
Speaker 3: and the manner and the setting of where it was said,
21:46
Speaker 3: and for the vice president to chime in as well.
21:52
Speaker 3: I mean, this is this is where we are now.
21:55
Speaker 3: Shouldn't be surprised though. I mean Donald Trump thrives on
21:58
Speaker 3: drama and controversy. He he did that well before he
22:01
Speaker 3: ever entered the political arena, so no reason to think
22:03
Speaker 3: he would change once he got into the oval office.
22:09
Speaker 3: Now he's twice in the over office. I mean, I
22:12
Speaker 3: got nothing here, even Mark or Rubio. If you saw
22:16
Speaker 3: Mark or Rubio on George Deephanopolis's show yesterday. He seemed
22:21
Speaker 3: on yesterday's show to support what the President and VP
22:25
Speaker 3: did on Friday. But if you go back and watch
22:27
Speaker 3: the tape of what happened in real time on Friday.
22:30
Speaker 3: I think even Secretary of State Rubio seemed embarrassed by
22:33
Speaker 3: the whole thing. But that's neither here nor there. Now
22:38
Speaker 3: the legislature, who seemed to be a little bit more
22:41
Speaker 3: concerned with social issues the surprise of no one, than
22:44
Speaker 3: they are actually getting stuff done that benefits everyday West Virginians.
22:49
Speaker 3: Ranked choice voting seems to be on some people's minds
22:52
Speaker 3: right now. And the editor's note, my man TJ. Meadows
22:55
Speaker 3: dropped a really good commentary on the whole ranked choice
22:58
Speaker 3: voting thing over the weekends, so we have that now.
23:00
Speaker 3: We're still talking about gender issues that may be tackled
23:03
Speaker 3: today which impact absolutely no one, not an issue here
23:06
Speaker 3: in West Virginia. Everyone points to the one case out
23:09
Speaker 3: of Harrison County I think it was, But go ahead
23:12
Speaker 3: and try to find another one. I mean, I'll wait

23:17
Speaker 3: courtroom about this on Friday and her foster care system.
23:20
Speaker 3: We have kids staying in hotels and apparently at campsites.
23:24
Speaker 3: But go ahead, legislature, just just focus on the stupid crap.
23:28
Speaker 3: It's Monday, and I'm not even starting off on a
23:31
Speaker 3: positive note. I do want to get this news item
23:35
Speaker 3: out there. And the investigation continues, and we reported on
23:38
Speaker 3: this yesterday. A body was discovered near the mount in
23:41
Speaker 3: South Charleston yesterday that according to the South Charleston Police Department.
23:44
Speaker 3: No word this morning on whether foul play is expected
23:48
Speaker 3: or not. South Charleston Police continuing the investigation. I mean,
23:51
Speaker 3: I've got some texts and then we'll bring the mayor

23:59

Speaker 3: do want to get into this though, because we have
25:15
Speaker 3: a guest, whether it's Austin Smith who is with the
25:18
Speaker 3: Charleston Fire Department. Austin, good morning, Welcome to the show,
25:20
Speaker 3: Good morning sir, thanks for being here so tomorrow is
25:24
Speaker 3: the seventy sixth, that's correct anniversary of the world with
25:27
Speaker 3: fire in Charleston. Mayor I'll start, I'll start with you.
25:32
Speaker 3: A tragic day in the history of the capital city.
25:35
Speaker 11: It is, and we remember the Wolwarth fire and are
25:40
Speaker 11: lost and injured firefighters every year. Captain Austin Smith, who's
25:45
Speaker 11: here with me today, can talk a little bit more
25:47
Speaker 11: about it. But many folks remember that day in Charleston,
25:51
Speaker 11: and I have learned a lot from our firefighters and
25:55
Speaker 11: listening and learning to them what happened on that day,
25:58
Speaker 11: how many firefighters we lost. It was a tragic, tragic event.
26:04
Speaker 11: But as we continued to talk every year during in
26:07
Speaker 11: and around this sad anniversary, the importance of investing in
26:13
Speaker 11: our first responders, their safety and their training to be sure.
26:18
Speaker 11: But it was it was a terrible day in the
26:20
Speaker 11: city of Charleston.
26:21
Speaker 3: Captain, Yeah, it definitely was.
26:23
Speaker 4: It's a it's something you have to remember, and we
26:25
Speaker 4: wouldn't don't like to think back on tragedies, but they
26:29
Speaker 4: really do need to be remembered on a regular basis
26:32
Speaker 4: so that we can learn from them. You know that
26:34
Speaker 4: that morning, at four am in the morning, it was
26:36
Speaker 4: a typical response for the guys, and they responded from
26:39
Speaker 4: Elizabeth Street. They responded there because a police officer noticed
26:42
Speaker 4: some white smoke. Typical job, No big deal, you know.
26:45
Speaker 4: They rolled up there, no big deal to them. They
26:47
Speaker 4: went into the first floor, sent a crude the basement
26:50
Speaker 4: and then all of a sudden tragedy collapse that happened.
26:52
Speaker 4: The first four collapse down the basement, trapping seven firefighters,
26:56
Speaker 4: eventually killing two more through their critical injuries and injuring fifteen.
27:00
Speaker 4: So a split second and their whole lives changed. And
27:04
Speaker 4: like the mayor said, it's so important that we always
27:07
Speaker 4: remember the importance of our training. And thankfully we have
27:11
Speaker 4: a mayor and city council that really puts, you know,
27:13
Speaker 4: firefire safety in their first responder safety at a forefront,
27:16
Speaker 4: providing with us with the tools and the resources we
27:18
Speaker 4: need to keep our training up so that we can
27:21
Speaker 4: keep on doing a safe job.
27:22
Speaker 3: And if any good captain comes out of a tragedy,
27:27
Speaker 3: and you hate to say something good came out, but
27:29
Speaker 3: you touched on training. And there have been people and
27:33
Speaker 3: I've got a lot of friends that are in the
27:34
Speaker 3: fire fighting game, so it's not a game. But you
27:36
Speaker 3: know what I mean, And in the first responders that
27:39
Speaker 3: have looked to that across the country as the war
27:43
Speaker 3: to fire and they have used it as a training mechanism.
27:47
Speaker 4: Sure, so that a lot of that is as understanding
27:49
Speaker 4: your surroundings and understanding building construction. When you roll up
27:53
Speaker 4: to the scene. The firefighters who arrived there, they thought
27:55
Speaker 4: it was just a typical fire, you know, a small
27:57
Speaker 4: light smoke fire, no big deal. But ubknowes to themselves
28:02
Speaker 4: the fire had been raging in the basin for a
28:04
Speaker 4: long time and that smoke has just been whisping out.
28:06
Speaker 4: So the fact of getting in doing building inspections, knowing
28:10
Speaker 4: pre plans of the buildings in our territory, having that
28:13
Speaker 4: constant training and expecting the unexpected and being prepared for it,
28:17
Speaker 4: and then also the resources to back you up. That
28:20
Speaker 4: whole entire company was stuck, and thankfully there was a
28:24
Speaker 4: whole city of firefighters willing to come and help and
28:27
Speaker 4: do the rescue and they could. So having that massive
28:30
Speaker 4: resources that a city this size needs is really invaluable.
28:34
Speaker 3: Again, we're talking for the first part of the segment
28:36
Speaker 3: today about the anniversary of the World War of Fire,
28:38
Speaker 3: which is tomorrow, and Mayor. I know that you've become
28:42
Speaker 3: somewhat of a historian, as many other people have been studying,
28:45
Speaker 3: studying this dark piece of Charleston's history.
28:49
Speaker 11: You know, it was interesting. I've only been there for
28:52
Speaker 11: six years, but last year and the year before we
28:54
Speaker 11: actually had relatives of the fallen firefighters there with us
29:00
Speaker 11: and to talk about their family's legacy. That's something that we,
29:06
Speaker 11: as Austin says, we need to continue to do. These
29:08
Speaker 11: were public servants. And so let me say something about
29:11
Speaker 11: public servants in a time in which folks are kind
29:14
Speaker 11: of thumbing their nose, let me say that, not only
29:18
Speaker 11: are the folks that Austin's talking about are firefighters, are
29:22
Speaker 11: ems responders, they're public servants. So are the folks who
29:25
Speaker 11: are going out and demoing these buildings for us as well,
29:28
Speaker 11: in our building department and our inspectors. They are also
29:30
Speaker 11: public servants. You don't think about somebody from the building
29:33
Speaker 11: department being a part of our safety team, By golly,
29:37
Speaker 11: they are. They're going out there to make sure that
29:40
Speaker 11: these structures that our guys and gals are going into
29:43
Speaker 11: in the middle of the night are safe, and if
29:46
Speaker 11: they're not, they're notified. You know, I don't like to
29:50
Speaker 11: tear buildings down, but in the six years I've been here,
29:53
Speaker 11: we've done over six hundred and twenty structures. I don't
29:58
Speaker 11: like to do it, but they're coming down if they're
30:00
Speaker 11: not safe, and we should not expect our firefighters to
30:03
Speaker 11: go into these buildings that are coming down because a
30:08
Speaker 11: lack of repair or maintenance. And so I'm really proud
30:11
Speaker 11: not only of our CFD, but also also our Building
30:15
Speaker 11: Department as well. And you'll hear in our budget tonight
30:18
Speaker 11: we're going to keep up our monies to get those
30:20
Speaker 11: buildings down because they appreciate it as much as I do.
30:24
Speaker 11: We're not going to put our first responders in unnecessary harms.
30:28
Speaker 12: Way.
30:29
Speaker 3: Talking again with Charleston me or Amy Schuler Goodwin and
30:32

30:47
Speaker 3: Captain Smith, before we let you go on the training
30:50
Speaker 3: that is conducted by the fire departments here. How much
30:54
Speaker 3: of that do you draw upon and how much of
30:56
Speaker 3: the young firefighters that are coming in, how much do
30:59
Speaker 3: you part the history and the story of the woold
31:02
Speaker 3: word fire when you are talking to perspective of firefighters.
31:07
Speaker 4: So all of our new recruits come by and we
31:10
Speaker 4: take them by the plaque that's out of the worst
31:12
Speaker 4: building and we tell them the story, give them a history,
31:15
Speaker 4: a lesson of what happened, what's the worst case scenario,
31:18
Speaker 4: and then how vital it is to prepare for the
31:21
Speaker 4: worst case scenario. And then the Charles's Fire Department is
31:23
Speaker 4: excellent in training. We take pride in our training of
31:27
Speaker 4: the members on the fire department, so it's constantly on
31:29
Speaker 4: the forefront. Is every day is training in the Charles
31:32
Speaker 4: The Fire Department. We do training every day three sixty five.
31:35
Speaker 4: We work twenty four hour shifts, so we have plenty
31:37
Speaker 4: of time to fit in a training scenario in our day.
31:41
Speaker 4: And our training department is is the top notch about it.
31:44
Speaker 4: So we really try to keep training on the forefront
31:47
Speaker 4: and then always remind ourselves we don't want to think
31:50
Speaker 4: about too much because you don't want to slow your
31:53
Speaker 4: response or make you question what you're doing, but you
31:55
Speaker 4: need to have in the back of your mind of
31:57
Speaker 4: the worst case thing that could happen, and then prepare diligently.
32:00
Speaker 3: All right, Captain Smith, I appreciate you taking time out
32:03
Speaker 3: of your schedule to be here. We're gonna cut you
32:05

34:48

35:11
Speaker 11: I'm not gonna I'm not going to divulge too much,
35:13
Speaker 11: but I have gifts for a couple of our council
35:16
Speaker 11: members who did not miss a day at USA Cycling.
35:20
Speaker 11: And so if you went to any of the events,
35:22
Speaker 11: if you missed him last year, please go this year
35:24
Speaker 11: because it's the most exciting thing. And I know Tim
35:29
Speaker 11: had talked about one of the most rewarding things. It's
35:30
Speaker 11: one of the most exciting. I mean where God is exciting. Absolutely.
35:34
Speaker 11: I didn't expect. None of us knew anything about it.
35:37
Speaker 11: We were like, this is going to be great.
35:39
Speaker 3: Going fast.
35:39
Speaker 11: Yeah, we've seen video of other cities.
35:41
Speaker 3: This is amazing.
35:42
Speaker 11: I talked to mayors from other cities.
35:44
Speaker 4: AU posted this, this will be cool.
35:46
Speaker 11: I didn't know. I didn't know. So bringing more cow
35:50
Speaker 11: bell this year, literally and figuratively.
35:53
Speaker 5: Uh.
35:53
Speaker 11: And so I have a couple of gifts to give
35:55
Speaker 11: to some of our council members who really were so
35:57
Speaker 11: supportive and showed up every single day to help with
36:01
Speaker 11: USA Cycling and be the biggest cheerleaders on the front lines.
36:04
Speaker 11: But you know, listening to Tim this morning on my
36:06
Speaker 11: drive in, there's so many things he said or you
36:10
Speaker 11: were talking about. You know, it was the Celtic Calling,
36:11
Speaker 11: and we had wrestling and we were talking about Marshall
36:14
Speaker 11: University's Quarterback club and gosh, you wiz, we had so
36:17
Speaker 11: many people in town and you know, one of the
36:19
Speaker 11: biggest problems we have there's nowhere to stay and the
36:22
Speaker 11: restaurant lines are too long. Man, that's music to my ears.
36:26
Speaker 11: It's music to my ears. But it's not just that.
36:29
Speaker 11: Let me you know, when people say, oh, there's there's
36:31
Speaker 11: too many things. You don't want to have something on
36:33
Speaker 11: this weekend because there's the Celtic Calling, which I took
36:36
Speaker 11: my son who was home for the home for the weekend,
36:38
Speaker 11: down to the Celtic Calling. Yes you do. And here's
36:42
Speaker 11: why Tim called it being vibrant. Right, Well, this is
36:45
Speaker 11: what Longwood's international the world's leading travel and tourism research
36:50
Speaker 11: firm says that the number one travel motivator why you
36:55
Speaker 11: and your bride are going to go somewhere is yeah,
36:57
Speaker 11: probably for a concert. Right, you'll go downtown for a concert,
37:00
Speaker 11: but you're not just doing that most of the time.
37:02
Speaker 11: You'll go get supper first, or there'll there'll be some
37:07
Speaker 11: new art art display that's up at the Clay Center.
37:11
Speaker 11: You'll do several things before you head back home. Lots
37:15
Speaker 11: of things to see and do. Is the number one
37:18
Speaker 11: travel motivator. Most people, when they're thinking, well, let's go downtown,
37:22
Speaker 11: what they're going to say is what's going on? What
37:25
Speaker 11: else is happening when we're there at this conference or
37:29
Speaker 11: when we go see a show. So it's always the
37:31
Speaker 11: number one travel motivator. So when people call our events
37:34
Speaker 11: office and they say, you know, hey, what's going on
37:36
Speaker 11: in Charleston. We don't want to have this when other
37:39
Speaker 11: things are going on, we always say, you know, what
37:42
Speaker 11: hang on, Let's let's.
37:44
Speaker 3: See about that.
37:44
Speaker 11: Because if folks are out and you can pull a
37:46
Speaker 11: big crowd, you know, there's synergy, there's there's that opportunity
37:52
Speaker 11: to get folks to come to your event. And again,
37:55
Speaker 11: as as Tim said, this is our gear up mode.
37:58
Speaker 11: We're you know, we're going to turn around and the
38:01
Speaker 11: girls' basketball tournaments coming in, and the boys' basketball tournament's
38:04
Speaker 11: coming in, and then and then we're literally off to
38:07
Speaker 11: the races. I know you talked about the Great Race
38:08
Speaker 11: coming in and USA Cycling and all there is to
38:11
Speaker 11: see and do in Charleston. It's going to be packed.
38:14
Speaker 11: But it is our time that we start stretching because
38:18
Speaker 11: we work all the time. If you feel like there's
38:21
Speaker 11: nothing to do in the city of Charleston, please call

38:54
Speaker 3: presenting your budget.
38:56
Speaker 2: Yeah.
38:56
Speaker 11: I am working with our Director of Finance, Andy Wood,
38:59
Speaker 11: who's just absolutely amazing. We are so incredibly fortunate in
39:02
Speaker 11: the City of Charleston to have him on our team.
39:05
Speaker 11: I'm going to be presenting one hundred and thirteen and
39:07
Speaker 11: some change million dollar budget, and it's what it has
39:12
Speaker 11: in there is our priorities. It's safety and health and
39:16
Speaker 11: wellness and infrastructure. And two to take a to take
39:21
Speaker 11: a page from Tim Brady's talking points, A vibrant city,
39:25
Speaker 11: investing in our infrastructure, investing in our employees, uh, investing
39:31
Speaker 11: in the roads that you travel on. Listen. It is
39:35
Speaker 11: no secret that we had a very difficult winter, Dave.
39:40
Speaker 11: And I can't imagine that there aren't people that are,
39:44
Speaker 11: because I know they are in my office calling in, Hey,
39:47
Speaker 11: there's a pothole here, there's a I need you to
39:50
Speaker 11: pave this road. Absolutely, we are going to, yet again
39:54
Speaker 11: for the sixth year in a row, keep up that
39:59
Speaker 11: pay budget at over three million dollars, and for good reason,
40:03
Speaker 11: because the roads this year took a beating and while
40:07
Speaker 11: we really feel like we're trying to get ahead and
40:09
Speaker 11: are paving, when you have a season like that, insulting
40:12
Speaker 11: and scraping, uh, you're gonna have a lot of potholes
40:14
Speaker 11: and we're trying to get there as fast as we
40:16
Speaker 11: can with cold patching. Some roads will just need that,
40:21
Speaker 11: but some roads will need to be completely uh paved
40:25
Speaker 11: this year. And so we have a schedule, we have
40:28
Speaker 11: a system that we work on. But you know what,
40:31
Speaker 11: as I always say, three oh four three four eight
40:33
Speaker 11: eight one seven four, call me, uh if there is
40:37
Speaker 11: a challenge with the road or something you want us
40:39
Speaker 11: to investigate, if we don't already know about it, and
40:41
Speaker 11: chances are we probably do, Dave doesn't matter, Still call
40:44
Speaker 11: me and let us know because we do keep a
40:46
Speaker 11: running list of that. But what you'll see also in
40:49
Speaker 11: the budget, does you know no taxes or fee increase
40:51
Speaker 11: proposal and uh maintaining all of our critical city city
40:57
Speaker 11: services as well, and something that I started just a
41:01
Speaker 11: couple of years ago, getting our wages of our employees
41:06
Speaker 11: who make the least up to that fifteen dollar mark.
41:09
Speaker 11: I am extremely proud for the third year in a
41:11
Speaker 11: row we've made that jump to get them there again.
41:15
Speaker 3: With Charleston may Or Amy Shulver good one. Speaking of potholes, Yeah,
41:18
Speaker 3: can the mayor Polae says a textra Can the mayor
41:20
Speaker 3: please have can od Turnpike addressed? Driving it and dodging
41:24
Speaker 3: the multiple potholes is like skiing a slalom course.
41:28
Speaker 11: As always with any road condition that you see out
41:31
Speaker 11: there that you want me to address and send her
41:33
Speaker 11: our public works group please three four eight eight one
41:36
Speaker 11: seven four, and especially if you have a specific if
41:40
Speaker 11: you can give me a little bit more detail, a
41:42
Speaker 11: little bit more guidance, that would be wonderful in city
41:44
Speaker 11: and you know in city roads too. Let me go
41:47
Speaker 11: ahead and be clear. But let me also say in
41:49
Speaker 11: that same breath, Dave, nothing would frustrate me more or
41:53
Speaker 11: any of our residents when they call about a road
41:55
Speaker 11: and say there's a pothole. I hope you don't hear
41:59
Speaker 11: from our folks, Well, that's a city road. We may
42:01
Speaker 11: tell you, we may inform you that is a city
42:03
Speaker 11: road or a state road. Excuse me, a state road,
42:05
Speaker 11: not a city road. It's a state road. But if
42:08
Speaker 11: it is in the city limits, let me know about it.
42:10
Speaker 11: Of course, we've got a great relationship with the Department
42:13
Speaker 11: of Highways in the state of West Virginia, and we
42:15
Speaker 11: certainly want to take that information because if it's in
42:18
Speaker 11: our thirty three square miles and it impacts you, we
42:20
Speaker 11: should at least know about it.
42:22
Speaker 3: Texas, please ask the mayor about the status of the
42:24
Speaker 3: mccorkil Avenue rebuild project in Kanas City. The roadwork looks
42:28
Speaker 3: like it's been completed, but portions of the sidewalk remained unfinished.
42:33
Speaker 11: Thank you so much. As we work with the State
42:35
Speaker 11: of West Virginia on that project, because that is a
42:38
Speaker 11: State of West Virginia project, I understand I think maybe
42:42
Speaker 11: from the language in that text, Dave, that there is
42:45
Speaker 11: some frustration. I think that Council Members Robinson and Council
42:50
Speaker 11: Member King also share in Councilwoman Burka share your concern
42:54
Speaker 11: about that as well as we continue to work with
42:56
Speaker 11: them to share our concerns. Because I I don't disagree
43:00
Speaker 11: with you. I think there are some improvements that need
43:03
Speaker 11: to be made with that state project.
43:05
Speaker 3: Texas, Dave, please ask me a good one if she
43:07
Speaker 3: has any knowledge of the schedule for painting the Washington
43:10
Speaker 3: Street bridge. If not, would she checked with the doh
43:13
Speaker 3: as to the schedule. Yeah, I do.

45:49
Speaker 3: putting a multiplex theater and to an extent, a video
45:52
Speaker 3: game arcade and roller rink within the sports complex?
45:56
Speaker 11: Yeah, it is so interesting. Not a roller rink. But
45:58
Speaker 11: actually we're working with an investment or from West Virginia
46:01
Speaker 11: actually on that movie theater because nothing would please us
46:04
Speaker 11: more than to get a theater back in that area Texas.
46:08
Speaker 3: Does the mayor have any word about the town center
46:10
Speaker 3: shutting its doors this summer?
46:12
Speaker 11: No, I don't, but I will say that we have
46:16
Speaker 11: been working hand in glove with a whole group, which
46:19
Speaker 11: seems like that's the answer that I have given you
46:22
Speaker 11: over the past couple of times. But oh, by the way,
46:25
Speaker 11: something that began in the seventies that has seen its
46:29
Speaker 11: demise at least in the past fifteen years. It takes
46:33
Speaker 11: more than just a couple of years to turn it around.
46:36
Speaker 11: So we've been working with the Hall Group and their
46:39
Speaker 11: entities to see what we can do to move forward.
46:42
Speaker 11: It's thirteen acres Dave that we want back in developable hands.
46:49
Speaker 11: And if it's going to be the Hall Group, great,
46:51
Speaker 11: If it's not, then what do we need to do
46:53
Speaker 11: with with that space?
46:56
Speaker 2: Is there?
46:56
Speaker 3: And I don't want to shut the gun here. Is
46:59
Speaker 3: there a possi stability that we could see a time
47:01
Speaker 3: when maybe the whole group doesn't own the town Center?
47:03
Speaker 11: Well, I mean I think that you know, I certainly
47:05
Speaker 11: don't have a crystal ball or a magic wand because
47:08
Speaker 11: if I did, it would be full and actually I'm
47:11
Speaker 11: not sure that it even would be a mall. I'm
47:13
Speaker 11: not sure that that is the model in which it
47:16
Speaker 11: is right now. Let's just be clear, won't be in
47:19
Speaker 11: the future. And by the way, that's okay. We want
47:22
Speaker 11: it to change. Downtown malls are not where it's at anymore.
47:28
Speaker 11: It is mixed use. And so as we have investigated
47:32
Speaker 11: for years and continue to look at what is the
47:36
Speaker 11: best and highest use for that property. Certainly having a
47:43
Speaker 11: mall that is not filled is not it. It's in
47:47
Speaker 11: the center of the city, and oh, by the way,
47:49
Speaker 11: it's connected to some of our most critical assets. But
47:52
Speaker 11: let me be clear about this. We're not sitting on
47:54
Speaker 11: our hands. We're not just twiddling our thumbs. We are
47:58
Speaker 11: working with them and others to see what is the
48:02
Speaker 11: best and highest use for that property and how do
48:05
Speaker 11: we move forward. Because folks, it's not going to be
48:07
Speaker 11: a mall and one entity is not going to save it.
48:11
Speaker 11: Bringing in a Dave and Busters is not going to
48:13
Speaker 11: save a property. That's not my opinion. That is simply
48:18
Speaker 11: a fact. It is a multi faceted investment approach and
48:22
Speaker 11: development approach, and that's the direction that we're going in.
48:26
Speaker 3: About to add about to double the city's population over
48:29
Speaker 3: the next couple of weeks. With the girls and boys
48:31
Speaker 3: State tournament now come in to.
48:33
Speaker 11: Town next week, it's gonna be great. Lots of things
48:35
Speaker 11: to celebrate, for sure, and lots of folks that are in.
48:39
Speaker 11: I have some friends who are coming in. Their daughter's
48:41
Speaker 11: playing and they're coming in and the first thing they
48:44
Speaker 11: said was, Hey, you've got a lot of James Beard
48:47
Speaker 11: chefs in town.
48:48
Speaker 3: Don't you tell me where?
48:49
Speaker 11: They literally said again, ready, Dave goes back to my point,
48:52
Speaker 11: lots of things to see and do. Yeah, they're going
48:54
Speaker 11: to be there for their daughter, but they're not going
48:56
Speaker 11: to be there the entire time. And so let me also,
49:00
Speaker 11: while I'm thinking about it, give a shout out to
49:02
Speaker 11: chef Chase Collier. One week ago. He's with restaurant A Brewsy.
49:08
Speaker 11: He'll be considered for the twenty twenty five James Beard Awards.
49:12
Speaker 11: So you know, as we celebrate Chef Paul, we have
49:15
Speaker 11: another chef here in the city of Charleston. We need
49:17
Speaker 11: to be celebrating as well.
49:19
Speaker 3: Texas has any municipal budget proposed under the current administration
49:23
Speaker 3: ever been smaller than the year before, It might be
49:27
Speaker 3: time for doge r right, that's what Textra said.
49:31
Speaker 11: That not mean that's right, that's right. Yeah, sure, I
49:33
Speaker 11: will say this. We are extremely responsible with our funds.
49:36
Speaker 11: And let me just go ahead and say this. When
49:40
Speaker 11: I got here, our Rainy Day fund was less than
49:43
Speaker 11: three million dollars. It is now at seventeen and a half.
49:48
Speaker 11: So we are responsible and we are fiscally conservative with
49:51
Speaker 11: our budgets. I can promise you that.
49:53
Speaker 3: Tex says, the town Center will probably become a mixed
49:56
Speaker 3: use with six to seven figure condos that West Virginians
49:59
Speaker 3: can't afford. I don't know about that, but I will
50:02
Speaker 3: say when I had Taro Ellis on a couple of
50:03
Speaker 3: weeks ago, my buddy Rich the Reeltor was on last week.
50:06
Speaker 3: There is a housing shortage, desperate, a desperate housing shortage.
50:10
Speaker 3: And I don't know about you know, six to seven figures,
50:12
Speaker 3: but there is a housing shortage well all over the canal.
50:14
Speaker 11: Out I worked out somebody that I work out with
50:16
Speaker 11: in the mornings. He put his house on the market
50:20
Speaker 11: two weeks ago, a three bedroom home here in the
50:25
Speaker 11: city of Charleston, three hundred and whatever you put in
50:28
Speaker 11: on the market for. He got a heck of a
50:31
Speaker 11: lot more and one showing one day. It's already in contract.
50:36
Speaker 11: And so to be sure, there is a housing housing shortage, all.
50:40
Speaker 3: Right, Tex says, what about a casino in Charleston. I
50:43
Speaker 3: remember reading about that a couple of years ago.
50:45
Speaker 11: Yeah, I think there is certainly a push for that.
50:49
Speaker 11: There's been not only a push for that, but there's
50:51
Speaker 11: also been a push for riverboat gaming as well. As
50:55
Speaker 11: the elk and the canal. We meet right here at
50:58
Speaker 11: the confluence of both of those things. But I'm not
51:01
Speaker 11: a gamer. I like shoes too much to spend on gambling, TJ.
51:05
Speaker 11: So that's what I what I that's what I do, TJ.
51:08
Speaker 11: I like to spend my money on. And oh, by
51:11
Speaker 11: the way, college tuition.
51:12
Speaker 3: And give me give me about thirty seconds and then
51:16
Speaker 3: we'll let you go on. When when can we expect
51:18
Speaker 3: some Regatta announcements to come?
51:20
Speaker 11: Thank you so much, so we're very excited. This year
51:23
Speaker 11: is kind of weird how the days fall, but we
51:26
Speaker 11: already have in contract to performers, and so we're very
51:29
Speaker 11: excited to make those announcements in the next couple of weeks.
51:33
Speaker 11: Let me before I turn it over to TJ and
51:35
Speaker 11: get out of your hair. I promised that I would
51:37
Speaker 11: do this this morning on the air. I think his
51:39
Speaker 11: family is listening. Mister Julian Sackman turns one hundred and
51:43
Speaker 11: two today, one hundred and two, So I wanted to
51:46
Speaker 11: make sure that I give a big birthday shout out.
51:48
Speaker 11: How lucky of a man and a life well lived,
51:51
Speaker 11: and he's given so much to so many as a
51:53
Speaker 11: public servant, serving in our military and a lifelong resident
51:57
Speaker 11: in the city of Charleston.
51:58
Speaker 3: Happy and believe to be the oldest living Marshall graduate.
52:01
Speaker 13: Oh is that right?
52:02
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I've heard that at a martial event. Mayor.
52:05
Speaker 3: I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot. TJ. Quickly,

Speaker 7: on Jinge Haapman's death. We'll talk ranked choice voting.
52:22
Speaker 3: I'm for it. I gave you a little shout out
