Transcript
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Good morning and welcome to Ag Squawk AM.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Jed Sidwell here, live from Joliet, Illinois, once again, back in the saddle at the home office.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: We saw an overnight rally in grains last night.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Packer margins still continue to be in the red.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: We're going to talk about what's been happening to the price of crude oil.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: We'll get to all of that here in a bit.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Quoting the livestock market and where it closed yesterday, I moved live cattle and feeder cattle back a contract to hit the ones with the most volume.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Live cattle were at$1.80 higher at$2.23.98.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Feeders were at$3.38.65 up a buck and 43 cents.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Lean Hogs, however, downed a$85.70, down a dollar fifty-eight.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Well, on to our weather discussion for today.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: It has been a hot, dry, miserable mess across the plains, and that is going to continue for week two, unfortunately.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Man, it has just been a scorcher into southern Kansas and places like that.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Back home in Colorado.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: We got up there to 108 one day, and that is not going to see some relief for a little while.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: However, opposite effect in the Corn Belt, the biggest Corn Belt rain of the summer is about to start.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: A critical rainfall event commences today and lasts through Saturday with two plus inches of rain targeting eastern South Dakota, southern Minnesota, northeastern Iowa, southern Wisconsin, and northern Illinois, here where I'm at.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: So be prepared and look out for those storms.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: This is much needed, hopefully, to replenish kind of some of the soils after this heat that we've seen.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: But hey, we have this slide up.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: That's a pretty positive slide to see.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: We saw an overnight rally in the grain space here recently.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Overnight corn, September contract, quoting it live here with their quotes from plus 500.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: It's at four and a half bucks right now.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Soybeans are at 1175.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Chicago wheats is at 679.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Kansas City wheat, I know I don't quote it very often.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Is it 745 and a quarter?
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Hey, it's good to see.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: We saw a slight correction early this morning, but man, all of them are up in the green.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Great to see.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna guess it's because of some of this action that we've been seeing in crude oils and energies.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: We'll get to that here in a bit.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: But first I want to talk about Packer Margins.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Let's go ahead and pop this slide up from MP Agrolytics.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Packer margins improved to this week for the first time in a year.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: It's better than a year ago.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: But even though it's an improvement, it's still$62 in the black or$62 in the red, excuse me, per head, which is better than the four-week average, which is negative$127.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And we sometimes forget, like we are the producer, and that's awesome that we've had this bull run for a while, but it's come at the cost of the packer.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: And now there's always rumors that you know the packers making more money than what they let on, and they can make more money from processed products and the pork and chicken side of things, so they're fine.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: But man, there has to be someone to buy our product, and they can only take this beating for so long, so we have to pay attention to it.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: It's maybe, I know we've seen the correction in the board recently, but it's maybe a positive thing to see that the Packer might be making a bit more money.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Oil prices move higher as Iran threatens response to the latest U.S.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: strikes.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: This comes from CNBC.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Trade the news, it doesn't matter what news outlet you look at, it's probably going to be the headline.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: $92 for Brent crude last night.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: It kind of came down just a bit this morning.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: In the kind of the politics discussion of it all, Iran says that we'll punish the aggressor today after a heavy wave of U.S.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: strikes yesterday, and it is causing some pretty insane jumps in the energy side of things.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: If you just look at the last 48 hours in crude oil, incredibly volatile, huge jumps up and jumps down.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: And when that happens, there's an effect on grain, there's an effect on cattle, there's an effect on stocks.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Every market gets affected by oil because a rising tide affects all ships, and that's kind of our saying here at Ag Bull Trading.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: So make sure and pay attention to those outside markets and pay attention to the news.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: But hey, if you need more news, hop on over to our friends that trade the news.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: They sponsor the show.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: They're an Ag Squawk service.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: If you're sitting at your desk and you're like, man, today I really need to know if some headline is going to come out, and I want to know the second it comes out.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Trade the news, plays in the background of your computer, gives you a ding and a notification.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Someone talks in your ear right when there's a tweet or breaking news headlines of any kind that affect the markets.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: They're a heck of a sponsor.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Trade the news.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Well, that's all we have for you today on the economic calendar, export sales, PCE price index, jobless claims, GDP all come out at 7.30 a little bit after I'm talking right now.
