Transcript
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: Welcome to Haunted Ozark Theater, H O T, your Hot Horror Podcast, and we're back.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: It is time to talk about what I'm calling the benefits of horror movies.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: But of course, we got to get into this day in horror history.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: What do you got, Paul?
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Well, if you're listening to this, it is August 21st.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: And there are a couple of birthdays that I want to shout out.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: First and foremost, my firstborn, my oldest son, is his birthday.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: Congratulations.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: Happy birthday.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: So he's 24 years old.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: So I wanted to shout him out.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: The other one is on August 21st, and this is timely.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Um Hayden Panteri.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: And she passed away.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: And she just passed away earlier this week.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: So I wanted to shout her out because I loved her as Kirby.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Well, that's that's exactly what I was where I was going is you know, to horror fans, um, she is our Kirby from four and six.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: And I think she was a very important addition to part six because, of course, six is the one that didn't have Sydney, and you needed somebody or something to fill that void.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and Kirby stepped up and did that, and I think did a really good job in that movie.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Um, but he missed.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just really sad story.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: I don't think the all the details are out yet, but um, super young, 30.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: I think she would have been 36.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Turn in 36, yeah.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: So to pass away at 35, you know, uh too young, man.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: Way too young, way too talented.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: Just you know, brought a lot of joy to a lot of people.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: Um, but in horror, you know, she was a big, big member of the Scream family.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: I also remember her from Remember the Titans, very little, and of course, Heroes.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she was an incredibly important part of Heroes.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: But anyway, just a sad thing, and I just want to shout her out.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: I've been seeing a lot of tributes to her online and stuff, but uh so happy birthday, happy heavenly birthday, Hayden Fanteri.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: So um, let's talk about rewatches.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: You want to go first?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: You want me to go first?
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: You go first.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: I so I've been on a kick, and I'll tell you right now, I'm I'm kind of hit a brick wall with my rewatches, and so what I've been doing is finding horror that I just wouldn't venture off to most.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So the one I want to talk about today, speaking of screen, was directed by Wes Craven.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, and here's a little side note about Wes Craven.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: I thought this was hilarious.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: I was watching a little uh interview, and it had Skeet Olvridge and Jaden McKennedy, and they were doing some kind of convention.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And Skeet said that Wes Craven told him when he was filming Scream that he was a nudist in the 70s.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And I thought that was the funniest thing ever.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: But the movie I want to talk about that he directed is Deadly Blessings 1981.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Don't know if you've ever seen a fun horror movie.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I have seen it.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I'm in, I don't know, Weird Face where like um uh religious war is kind of my thing right now.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: But this one is about the it's like an Amish like religion, the Hittites.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it stars a very young Sharon Stones in this.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it's very atmospheric.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And I just I from what I read, this is like his first supernatural breakout horror.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, one of them.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: I would say so.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: I would say so.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: But man, it I really dug this movie.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: I just thought the tone of it, the look of it, the acting, it's a and I didn't know nothing about it.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you did, but I don't think we've talked about it.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think we have talked about it.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: When we did our uh episode about like 80s horror, and when we did our episode about religious horror, I was on the verge of bringing it into both of those conversations.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: I don't remember why I chose to not at the time, but um no, I'm a big fan of Deadly Blessings.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: Um I'm I'm maybe it was the horror hidden gems episode too.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: But anyway, um it's yeah, it's a fantastic movie.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, do yourself a favor and watch it.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: Since you brought up the religious horror, have you heard that um Ken Russell's The Devils is being released to the theaters?
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Ooh, really this October.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: This October.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you'll have to see that.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: So another maybe one of the finest religious horror movies ever made, The Devils.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Um, but it was infamously uh edited and censored upon release.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: Big time.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: This big time.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: This is the Ken Russell director's cut.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: Uncut.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: It's not only is it uncut, it's rated NC17.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Bro, that oh is it gonna be in our console?
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: I haven't seen which theaters yet, but it's gonna be in the theaters um, I think like October 17th or something like that.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think it's like a one-night only thing, so we're gonna have to make it happen somehow.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: You know, yeah, it's this is this is big.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: That's good news for horror fans.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, let me real quick talk about two non-horror movies that I re-watched or watched.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: Um, I went and saw the new Spider-Man in the theater with my kids, nerd, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: I heard it's great.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: That's all I'll say about that, because this is a horror podcast.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: And the other non-horror movie I watched, it just happened to be on.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: Which how often are things just on anymore?
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: You know, like on Roku, they do have that live TV section, which I never ever go on, but for whatever reason, I went on it the other day and it was just starting Fanboys.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Well, I love fanboys.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: If you're a Star Wars fan, you need to watch Fanboys if you haven't seen it.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Very young uh Seth Rogan's on that movie as the Truckee.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Hilarious.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: Great, great movie.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: Um, I went to, I told you this, but I don't think I've mentioned on the podcast.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: I went to one of those screen unseen at the local theater where you buy a ticket and you don't know what you're gonna see.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, but I knew that it was gonna be a horror movie because they do tell you like the rating and the genre before you go.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: And I saw ice cream man, Eli Roth.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And brother, I can't.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: I think you're the only person who's talked positive about this movie.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've seen a lot of bad things, so I'm gonna have to personally watch you know, 99% of the movies that we both love get ragged on, so it probably is great.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: Well, here's what I would say is if you know and love Eli Roth, yeah, you're getting exactly what you signed up for.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: And I thought it was funny, and I thought it was quirky, and of course it was unrated, gory.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Just have the carnage candy.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: That's all I care about with his okay.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Then yeah, you got me right there.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: He he made it on his own dime so that he could release it totally unrated without the MPAA, and it is a bloodbath, it's an absolutely absolute bloodbath.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Is there uh is the killer cool?
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Because you know that's my main thing, really.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: If you got that cool killer, it can be a pretty crappy movie, and I'm still invested in it.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, all I will say is there's not just one killer.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: That's all I'm gonna say.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: Uh it's it is totally worth seeing.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: Anyone who says otherwise uh is a buffoon.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Where they're just they're just they're too uptight.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Well uh speaking of ice cream, did you see that oh um the original ice cream man?
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: They're making a sequel.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: I sent that to you.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: Yes, you did see when I did watch Clint Howard.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Yes, and he was talking about um surprise cameos and everything, so yeah, that's gonna be cool.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: That's gonna be cool.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: So, what was your your rewatch?
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: You didn't name anything horror, Paul.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm I'm not done yet.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: Uh I watched Mars Attacks, which is adjacent, I would say.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: That's the cheesiest movie ever, dude.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: But it's hilarious and awesome.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: And it's like, did you watch anything horror?
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: I'm starting to walk.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: I'm not done.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Okay, I got just every movie that's not horror.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: I'm naming everything I watched.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: So two that are real horror.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: I watched Founders Day.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Have you seen that?
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: What's it about?
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: It is kind of like a scream ripoff.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: It came out like three three years ago.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: It reminded me actually of Eli Ross's.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Did it start on a bridge?
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Yep, I have seen it.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: It's on Humbloop.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: What'd you think of it?
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: It's down right down the middle of the road.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: I thought it was a big clone of an Eli Roth movie.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: To me, it was like if you made Scream and Thanksgiving and kind of put them together.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: Uh I know what you did last summer.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: It didn't.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: I'm not going to say it was bad, but it did not hold my attention.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: I felt it's forgettable.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: I found myself kind of my mind was kind of wandering as I was watching it.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: Um, and then the last one is, and I watched this with the whole clan.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: Uh, my son actually picked this one.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: I'm taking a Deborah Logan.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: That's a good one.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Good possession, really good one.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: What did they think?
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: I I know what you think.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: What is your they all loved it?
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: Um, especially the ones who aren't really horror kids, like my youngest son and my wife.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: They're not, you know, really in love with horror like the rest of us, but um, they thought it was just a good story, you know, a good and it starts it, it I like that it's it's kind of blair witchy, but it's in a sense it is, isn't it?
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: But it it really um starts off like it's scary, but in a non-horror way, because it's about Alzheimer's essentially, right?
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: And that's the road you think it's going down, that's the road you think it's going down, and then it really turns, and it's it's really good, really, really good.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna put up that movie, and I want you to tell me which one you like better.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: That movie or the autopsy of Jane Doe.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Because both of those were sleeper hits for me because I didn't know nothing about either one, and I remember watching them both with family, and both we were like, wow, these were really solid flicks.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Now, Jane Doe, that's when it's the father and the son.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they yeah, yeah.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: That made it extra creepy, I think.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because the father and the son are like in it together.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: That supernatural aspect you get in it, yeah.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so though those are all my watches or rewatches.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Thanks for telling us all the non-horror ones, Paul.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: That was awesome.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Well, it's been a while since we I watched Seinfeld too.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Do you want me to tell you about all the episodes?
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Let's hear it.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: All right, let's get down to the nitty-gritty here, Goof Paul.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: All right, we're gonna talk about the benefits of being a horror fan, psychological and things like that.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: And I mentioned in the last episode what prompted this is we had a DM from a listener who said that I love this story, he has a hard time finding common ground with his son, and then they started listening to our podcast, and then they started watching the movies that we talked about together and kind of connecting over these horror movies.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: I love it, and freaking awesome.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: Basically, he just wanted to thank us and tell us to keep doing what we're doing, and that just got me thinking more about something that we have skated around a bunch of times, which is you know, horror bringing people together, horror being good for you.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: You know, it's not all bad like some people want you to believe.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: Oh man, and and in fact, there's a lot of positives that come out of it.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: I'd say it's worse watching the news nowadays than it is a horror movie.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: But I wanted to, you know, we say it's it's good, but I really wanted to dive into why it's good.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Okay, or recently.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that's what I want to talk about.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: And I did some good research, but you go ahead and start.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: We're we're to begin.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: You know, my first memories of being like with my friends, I could or my sister, I guess I should start with my sister, and really getting into whore and just sitting with her and that camaraderie and that feeling you get and being scared, but in a fun way.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: It's almost like a roller coaster when you're a kid, Paul.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: And those ups and downs, and I can't I don't know how it it bonded us in a certain way.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: And me and my sister never really got along, and we still don't to this day.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: I love my sister, but the one thing we can always do is get together and talk about horror movies and go, did you and we we're on two different uh spectrums, and I'll be like, That's a piece of crap, and she's like, No, that's the greatest horror movie ever.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: So it's fun that way, but uh I mean, I always tell you Friday the 13th, 3 is my favorite just of all time.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: It's one of the first one, but I never mentioned my big sister was there watching it with me.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: And when I got scared, oh god, this is maybe I shouldn't say this.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: But when big strong Cody was five years old and he got scared, sis, can I sleep in your bed tonight?
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: You know, I was I was like, I don't know, it scared me, but I would always I'd have to have more and come back for it.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, it just bond us in a I don't know.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: No, that's fantastic psychological way.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: Because like you said, even though you may be don't get along great these days, you will always have that bond.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: We will always, yeah, and always cherish that too.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, in a certain she just being able to look over my little shoulders when I was the little guy and knowing my big sister was there.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: I could have went watched any movie with her.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I don't think I ever told her thank you.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Like, hey, just just you being there and I'm knowing I'm okay because you're no one else.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: We were, you know, like you're saying.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: My sister was my baby sister, mom was off working, who knows where my dad was.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, she was she made everything okay.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: Wow, that's great, man.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: I like hearing that.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: And I love that you likened it to a roller coaster.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: That's a really good analogy.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Like the whole point of roller coasters is to take us to that edge so that we can look the danger in the face, but never really be truly endangered.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Endangered, but yeah.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: And you learn these coping skills or these coping mechanisms.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: And that's exactly what horror does.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: I I have some even scientific articles to back that up.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: But nobody pickets roller coasters for being, you know, but that's what they do with horror movies.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: They're all it's all I don't know.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: That's that's that's the great mystery, is like is that just a scapegoat?
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: It is the that's I think that's exactly right.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: Horror is like the ultimate scapegoat, and but really, if it's accomplishing the exact same thing as a roller coaster, then these same people who are out here protesting horror movies, they should go be protesting roller coasters.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, agreed 100%, dude.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Well, I found this.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: Uh I think I mentioned this, I know I mentioned this to you.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: I may have mentioned this on the podcast, or I may not have.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: But I came across this article on MSN.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: I couldn't find an author for the article, so it could be like an AI thing, but it was so I'm just giving credit to MSN for it.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: But it's called Horrors 2026 Boom.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: And it's basically talking about when future us look back at 2026, we're gonna recognize 2026 as a turning point.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you you mentioned that again for horror.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: So here's a here's a little article or a little blurb from the article that I think lends itself well to this topic.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: By juxtaposing timeless classics with contemporary breakthroughs, um these new horror, these new horror films thrive on reinvention without losing their roots.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: They highlight shifts towards narrative, sophistication, cross-genre experimentation, and indie innovation while reaffirming the cultural weight of long-standing franchises.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: This synthesis offers fans and newcomers alike a roadmap through horror's evolving landscape from literary gothic origins to cutting-edge, interactive, and cinematic experience experiences.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: The result is a cultural moment where horror dominates conversations across entertainment formats.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: That's very true.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: And I would have likened too, I would say about 30 years ago, scream.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: We're going through this whole thing, and that's what everyone was saying that scream's changing, and we're going through this next level.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: Because let's face it, horror was dead for a while, dude.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, big time.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: We hit rock bottom for for a good minute, and then scream comes along, it puts new blood, it's got the young new faces, and it, I mean, it kickstarted the industry, brother.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: I agree, and that's what we're getting now with this young early to mid-90s was was the dark years for sure.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: And Scream definitely rescued it.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: But what's different, I think, about this year, and it is exactly 30 years, 96 to 26.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Um, what I think is different about this, though, is it kind of like how this last sentence says it's dominating the conversation across entertainment formats.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: Um, it's also garnering critical praise like never before.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: We had Sinners and Weapons both win Academy Awards last year.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: And we have, you know, early talk of obsession being on the Academy's radar.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: She needs to win something, brother.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: So that's where I think uh it is like '96, but maybe even taking it to the next level.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: Because now we're getting critical acclaim.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: Which that didn't happen at that time, not to my memory, anyway.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: You know, it would I don't think Nev Campbell was getting any Oscar Nazis.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Probably not.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: But man, um, yeah, what a great time to be a horror fan.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: What a great time to be discovering horror for the first time if if you're new to it.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: And these could like, I went and watched Obsession, and it was kind of a cultural thing.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: I know if you felt it too.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: I didn't know nothing about this movie, but everyone, there was a buzz about it.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: Dude, you gotta check it out.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: You what don't wait, you gotta watch this one in theater, Cody.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: And I just from hey Layla, she's 17, she's my daughter.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: You want to go check this movie out?
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, dad, I've heard a lot about it, and it was fantastic.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, really good.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Um, my wife actually said to me not too long ago, like, everyone's saying how good this movie is, maybe I should watch it.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: And she is not a horror person at all.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: And so me and her watched it when it came on Peacock, and she really enjoyed it.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: And I was reminded why it was so good.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: Uh, I I think I had forgotten how good it actually was, but I do remember the atmosphere of the theater, and yeah, there was a buzz, there was also uh a wide gap of you know, young boys and girls, all the way up to older men and women, and they were all equally there for it.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: And what does that say about and it's a horror?
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: You want to know the last time I remember filming something like this?
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: You the last movie I can remember everyone was talking, but you gotta go watch it was The Dark Knight.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, and I just even my dad, when he was my stepfather, he never went to the theaters and he went and watched that one, and that's when I was like, This is a big movie.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: I gotcha, yeah.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: But I just and I'm so happy it is a horror movie, yeah.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: You know, yes, yes, it's an it's like a a can't miss event, like you said, culturally, uh people are gonna be like, Where were you that summer when Obsession came out, or where were you that summer when Dark Knight came out?
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be a touchstone that people will always remember and always point to and come back to, and but this time around it's horror.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I love it, and that's fantastic.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: It is, yeah, that's fantastic.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Well, and even like the stories you told about it was almost your father in in a weird way making it toughening it up even as a little guy.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: But hey, we're starting alien tonight, and or the exorcist, was it the exorcist?
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: The one that he made me watch multiple times.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: It was American World.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, American World.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: But hey, where did we finish last night?
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: We're gonna pick up next night, and we're gonna get through this together.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: So and you came out of that tougher, uh, for sure that you know for sure, and that's a great segue to my next few points here.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm calling this psychological benefits, but here's just four bullet points uh that I found doing some research.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: Um point number one horror movies strengthen emotional resilience.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: As facing fictional threats helps people manage fear and uncertainty, making real life stressors feel more manageable.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: I totally agree with that, Paul.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: That's kind of what we were just talking about with the roller coaster.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: But this is I think this is known.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: This is something that is known, but people don't give credit where credit is due.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: Uh the next The point is watching horror movies triggers the fight or flight response.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: This heightened state can sharpen focus and attention to detail, improving cognitive function and problem-solving skills.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: So it takes you to kind of almost like a higher plane of awareness when you're watching these movies.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Is that that fear sense kicking in?
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: You think?
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: And heightening that sense?
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: I would think so.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: And you know, what's one of the favorite arguments that horror film fans like to have?
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: Well, why'd she go right when she could have gone left?
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: And and that's I think that's kind of what this is talking about is like you automatically think, what would I do if I found myself You put yourself in that in the shoes of that.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: And then you have to start thinking creatively and quickly.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: And I think that's psychological why we attach to these characters.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Because you are becoming an absolutely good point.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: It's a good exercise.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: Uh point number three on this is viewing horror films with others, and this is something you talk about quite a bit, with others can foster a sense of camaraderie and shared experience.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: Enhancing social bonds through collective reactions like gasps, laughter, or screams.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: The controlled exposure to feel excuse me, the controlled exposure to fear can also reduce feelings of loneliness as viewers feel empowered and connected to the narrative of other viewers.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: I love that, dude.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: That's deep.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: That's some well, that's kind of what you just mentioned with your sister.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: That's something that you've talked about when we went to the horror con.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: You know, I felt it with those people.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: I don't, you know, I go out like I went to Target last night.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: It's a barrage of teenage college girls.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: I didn't feel connected to any of them.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Well, that's probably a good thing.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: But yeah, when I walked into that, and I hate being in crowds, but there was just something I felt like I was at home with my freaks.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Not in a bad way, but I just I felt like I could be me, and it was a weight off my shoulders.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: I can't describe Paul.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: No, I totally know what you're saying, and I'm sure all of our, you know, true blue horror fans that are listening know exactly what you're saying too.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: But I just thought that was interesting.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: The camaraderie, you know, I think that's kind of a given, but reducing feelings of loneliness, even when you're watching it alone, you feel less alone because it connects you to this greater community that exists outside your door, you know.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: That was I thought that was neat.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: Uh and the last point is horror movies are more than just entertainment, they can enhance mental resilience, provide emotional catharsis, improve cognitive skills, and foster social and personal growth, making them a surprisingly beneficial genre when enjoyed in moderation.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: That's and with awareness of individual tolerance levels.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: It's funny you brought that up because it was I I still remember this.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: In my, I guess, warp mine.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: I can remember being 13 in the movie.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: I had to watch, it was like a rite of passage to me.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: And I set this up in my head, man, if you're gonna be a man, you've got to watch it, you've got to watch it alone, and you gotta get through it.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: And that was The Exorcist.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because that again, my older sister's like, it's the scariest movie ever.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: And that growing up, that movie was, and it still is considered the top.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: I would I would say so.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: But I can remember going through that movie and wanting to quit when I was 13.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I was like, I it made me feel uneasy, but when I got done with it, it was cathartic.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my you made it, Cody.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you've made it through this.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Now we can watch anything, right?
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it was I don't um game changer.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: You gotta get it under your belt, and then once it's under your belt, like you said, now I can I can tackle anything, you know.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: And that's again part of building that resilience that they're talking about here, the mental resilience they call it.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Um I will say I do take issue with the enjoyed in moderation part of the sentence.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: Well, it said when enjoyed in moderation.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: Okay, we're not moderation, no, we do not enjoy it in moderation, we enjoy it in excess.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: And but it's fall they follow that with the sense with this sentence, an awareness of individual tolerance levels.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: And I think it depends on each individual, exactly.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: I think that is what's important.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: If if you have the tolerance level built up, as we do, as we do, then um you can wear watch this stuff day daily, day in and day out, and it doesn't mess with you.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: But if you it's really therapeutic, if you don't have the individual tolerance for it, we're gonna get burnt up real quick, then you shouldn't do it.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think you know, the old saying know thyself is very important across the thing, though, just yeah, exactly.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: But but in this sense, it's important for if if you're if you're not up for it, it's gonna it's gonna hurt you.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: And you know, you can't watch too much of this stuff if it's gonna, yeah, if it's gonna ruin you or ruin you for others.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: But I'm sure you're like me.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Uh I don't do it, just I am looking forward to it.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: I'm oh what am I gonna get to if the day where I go, golly, I've gotta watch a horror movie, it's the day I'm probably done with this podcast.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, oh yeah.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: No, I mean when I I think I've said this before, but when I know my wife has to work, like she's gonna work tonight, then I'm already thinking about which horror movie am I gonna watch.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely, not which movie, which horror movie.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: And there's nothing better.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: Like, I look forward to so much.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Are like when we go to the theater to watch something, for one, we're watching something we've never seen together and just that bonding, and wow, this was great! And I cannot wait to watch in a violent nature too with you.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: I have been waiting so long.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: Comes out in December, and brother, yeah, we're I just know we're gonna have a blast.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, it's gonna be good, it's gonna be great.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: Um, the last thing is it talked about um a catharsis, and we've all been in situations where we were angry or upset or whatever, and you put on a horror movie, it makes you feel better.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Not worse.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: It makes you feel better, yeah.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: Almost like metal.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: Well, exactly like that.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: You know, I think I've said before horror is the is the heavy metal of movies, and heavy metal is the horror of music.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: Yes, sir.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, uh it it makes me feel better when I'm I remember I was in a really bad mood for one reason or another.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: And I had been putting off watching Terrifier for the first time.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: I don't remember why I had been putting it off, but I had been putting it off.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: And I was I was really mad about something, and I had had to go out and run an errand or something.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: And I remember I was at the gas station putting gas in my truck, and I was just fuming.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, I was so mad, and I don't even remember what I was mad about.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: But I went home and I was like, what am I gonna want?
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna watch something.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna grab the remote and I'm gonna find something to water.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Like I was pissed off, and I put on uh I'm finally gonna watch this terrifier movie, see what it's all about.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: And if you've seen Terrifier, that movie should propel you further down that road, right?
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: But man, as soon as it was over, I just felt so much better, so much more chilly.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: What do you think that is?
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: It's I mean, I think it's how we're made up.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Well, did you release that energy in with art?
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: I think that's yeah, exactly.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, all you did want to go out and chainsaw chainsaw girl an app after that, but the anger you had you put into oh, he got her or this and maybe and and it dissipates through the screen, through the character, through the actions that are happening on the screen, even though they're not real uh actions.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: And I think that that's important.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: And I tried to look up a statistic.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: Uh I tried to look up just a key phrase does horror save lives?
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Yes, I'll tell you that right now.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: And I well, I know that it does in a sense, like we're talking about, as far as um, you know, if I'm feeling really low and a horror movie makes me feel a hundred times better, then maybe it prevents me from harming myself or something like that.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: But I was thinking on the other end of the spectrum, like uh, like you said, you didn't make you want to go out on the chainsaw somebody in half.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: But I'm wondering if there are people out there who, you know, man, I really wonder what it would be like to saw somebody in half.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: But instead of actually going to do it to that character, they see it on screen and they're like, oh, okay, well, that's now I don't have to do it.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: Just do it, yeah.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: Well, I guarantee you that happens, dude.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: There's people like that.
- 31:16SPEAKER_02: Well, and I just logically, I I have to agree.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, I guarantee you.
- 31:22SPEAKER_02: But when I tried to find any kind of research to back that up, I I didn't find anything.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: I did find a lot of stuff talking about you know mental health.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: Instead of you know harming yourself or even killing yourself, uh, you know, you can kind of step back from the edge after watching a horror movie.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it's it's no different than these kids who play these video games.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: When I'm watching Michael, Jason, any I'm living through them.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: And I know that may sound warp, but if I'm angry or something, I'm releasing that with them.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: And exactly.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: It I yeah, I don't want to go out and kill people, but we all get angry.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: And man, he gave a tur on that one, and he got Michael got that guy on the enome, and it's like, hey, okay, I'm I'm feeling a little bit better.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: About my life's a little, I didn't get my head cut off like that, fool.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: I I'm doing okay.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: I think when you can take something that's bothering you and you can place it on something else, and then that something else can carry it away for you.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: Now it's not on your plate anymore.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: I think that's huge.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: I'm a big believer in that.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: I am too.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: And I I think, you know, it's probably more important or more beneficial to people like us who maybe I mean, I can't speak for you, but I'm not the most mentally healthy person on the planet.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: I'm I don't think that's such a thing, is it in this day and age?
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: Maybe not.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: If someone tells you they are, they're probably lying to you.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: We're all screwed up one way or another.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: But I mean, I I have had struggles with mental health in the past.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Here not.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: And I love it.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: And I feel like without horror, I'd be way, way worse off.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: It's a medication in one way or another, right?
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: I use it's therapy.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: And I use mine with uh lifting.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: And there's certain days I'm like, man, if I was Leatherface and I was out here living, because I've got this big shop and now I've got all my horror mask in there, and I can kind of man, what would Leatherface is doing shoulders?
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: He's got to lift up a human.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: I've got to have the and it's kind of warped, but that's all I think.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: And man, when you lift day after day, you've got to reinvent the wheel to to kind of get you going.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: So I'll put myself in their shoes in that sense, and it helps, man.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: I'm telling you.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you don't want uh it makes it fun, I guess.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: It it gets it'll get stale.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've been lifting for 20 years now, so right.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: Anything that can give me the edge, and and all my favorite killers are superhuman shrinks, so right.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: Um, so I found this article.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: It's actually a uh a book.
- 33:59SPEAKER_02: These are excerpts from a book.
- 34:00unknown: A book, yeah.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: I read it in a book.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: It's and I just thought this was really fantastic stuff.
- 34:08SPEAKER_02: Um, this author's name is Colton Scrivener.
- 34:11SPEAKER_02: And he's not smart.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: He wrote it, he does sound smart.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: He wrote a book called Morbidly Curious.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: A scientist explains why we can't look away.
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: Is that that's the name of the book.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: Here's a couple of uh uh blurbs from from his book.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: Yes, excerpts.
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: Look at the big brain on you.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: Scrivener and and Templeton with the big brain.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: I don't know about that.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: Uh okay, so the first evidence we have of writing includes horrible demons and monstru monstrous beasts, Scrivener says, describing the 4,000-year-old Babylonian tablets engraved with the Epic of Gilgamesh.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: So the Epic of Gilgamesh, according to Colton Scrivener, is the earliest example of human writing, and it's a tale of horrible demons and monstrous beasts.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: And Hugh says, I would say features of horror stories are as old as language itself.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: That's fairly fascinating.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: He says, Aristotle spoke about how weird it is that we're set up to evade and to avoid dangerous, disgusting, harmful, horrible things, yet we feel magnetized to be in spaces where we're in touch with disgusting, horrible, noxious, and horror horrifying things.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: So true, you know, kind of going back to this fight or flight response, like it's programmed in us, you know, to either fight it or run away from it.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: But we chase it.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we seek it, don't we?
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: We seek it out, you know, and that's that's just something in us.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: That's something in us, and that's that's pretty neat to think about.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: But um, I've never, yeah, kind of like you know, we said the the very first special effects in Hollywood were in a horror movie, you know.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: This guy is saying the very first story that was ever written down was a horror story.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean, one of the oldest stories, what Beowulf?
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the poem.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's got Grindel, it's got the beast, the monster that Beowulf's got to fight, and that's some.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: Tears his arm off, and it's very brutal.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: It's it explains the arm off very graphically and vividly.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: Um we love it though.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: We've all like you said a long time ago, we've all men, I'm sure in caves, uh, thousands of years ago, we're telling horror stories about one way or another to scare the kiddos.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, and you learn lessons from it, and you develop survival skills.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: And that's what look at obsession.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: That's a lesson, isn't it?
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: Oh, big time, big time.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: Um, so he says it's adaptive for every for any animal, including humans, to understand and learn about the dangers around them, and so that is a function that horror movies serve.
- 37:05SPEAKER_02: It helps us to it exposes us to the dangers around us, and it helps us to understand them, learn about them, and then adapt to them is what he's saying.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: And that's that's huge.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: That is, I mean, that's a really big thing that we all need to go through.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: And and some people don't, and you can tell those people there's stuff.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, oh yeah, you know what I mean.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: We've all met people like that, right?
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: So then he he um he categorizes people who enjoy horror, who people who seek out this thrill.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: He categories categorizes them into three different categories.
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: And I'm gonna tell you what they are, okay.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: The first category he calls adrenaline junkies.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: He says we're driven by the physical feeling of suspense, and people report feeling quote unquote more alive when they're scared.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: So, yeah.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: Um same, yeah, same effect as the roller coaster, the haunted house, watching the scary movie.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: The second type of person he calls the white knuckler.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: They tend to dislike the stress that horror films provoke.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: They don't necessarily enjoy the feeling of fear, but they do enjoy the feeling of conquering their fear.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: I like that.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: They feel the process has helped them to learn something important about themselves.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: So that's kind of what we discussed a little bit earlier, and kind of like what you were saying when you made yourself watch The Exorcist.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: You know, you you didn't love it in the moment, no, but when you were done, you had this feeling of completion, and you like I could get through anything, yeah.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: So in that moment, you know, you'd be one of these white knucklers.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: The third, and this is the one that I think I identify with, he calls the third group dark copers.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: Explain this.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: Um, they see it as a way of just dealing with real life.
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: They report that watching horror films to explore how violent the world is, for instance, and to remind themselves of how safe their own own lives are in comparison.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, some even see the on-screen action as a way of managing their anxiety or depression.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: I could definitely see you gravitating towards that one.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, not a bad that's awesome though, that you have that.
- 39:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: That is so cool.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: I like that one.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: I'm definitely the more the white-knuckled one.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm a dark coper, 100%.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: But um kind of like you're saying, like, well, thank god I didn't get my head chopped off.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: Like you said that just a minute ago, and that's kind of what he's saying.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: Like, uh, remind your he they remind themselves how safe they are in their own life.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: Not so bad after all.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: It's not so bad, is it?
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: It's not quite as bad as you might think it is.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: But um, neat little book.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: Uh Colden Scrivener, morbidly curious is the name of the book.
- 40:11SPEAKER_02: Sounds like a good read.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, check it out.
- 40:14SPEAKER_02: Um, he did a little study um to kind of wrap up the book, and he said to further give proof to the adaptive value of his thesis, uh, he did a uh a survey or a not an experiment, but he he basically talked to horror fans um during COVID-19.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: And then he also talked to non-horror fans, and this is what he said.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: He found that fans of horror showed greater resilience at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- 40:57SPEAKER_02: They were more likely to agree with the statement I have been taking the news about the pandemic in stride.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: Or I believe in my ability to get through these difficult times.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: That's us.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 100%.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 100%.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: He said that those were the answers of horror fans.
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: The non-horror fans could not say those same things about themselves.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: And sissies.
- 41:28SPEAKER_02: I you and I didn't know each other back then, but I didn't I never once got worried.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: You know, we're not knocking anyone who knows.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: No, no, so let's get that straight.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not at all.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Um I'm not a particularly anxious person.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: I'm not a person who's easily scared.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: But I like I said, I do have some mental health struggles that I have to deal with.
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: So uh I'm saying that when I didn't fret or worry or get rattled or I didn't miss a day of work, I didn't that's both of dude.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: I didn't it didn't cross it it it didn't affect me one way, right?
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: And and I'm not saying that I'm some you know rock who's unmovable, unshakeable.
- 42:24SPEAKER_02: What I'm saying is, and to this guy's point, is maybe horror made me this way.
- 42:30SPEAKER_00: That foundation was built off the backs of these horror movies to make you more sturdier in these tougher times than reality.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: And that right there in itself is unbelievable.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: If you really think about it, your mind was just shaped around.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Well, I made it through Alien, I made it through a werewolf, I made it.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: Hey, what's COVID?
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: Well, it's COVID, dude.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: It ain't gonna touch me.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's dude, that's awesome.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: No, you're right, you're absolutely right.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: Going back to the beginning of this conversation, you talked about my dad, you know, making you little man making me okay.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: You didn't make it through tonight, we're gonna try again tomorrow.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: Like that changed you forever, whether you like it or not, it changed you personally and everything.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: Honestly, and I I didn't have this thought during COVID, but now that we're talking about it in retrospect, yeah, I'm you know, if uh American Werewolf in London didn't take me down, then COVID COVID-19 is not gonna take me down.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: Exactly, man.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: You know, and um that was the the prevailing attitude of horror fans was it's not that big a deal.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: But we've been through worse, yeah.
- 43:38SPEAKER_02: But the people who aren't necessarily horror fans, some of them really struggled.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: So wake up, people, and start watching your horror daily, daily, and you will make it do anything.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: Oh no, it's made my life better.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: That's all I'm gonna say.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean my life better.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: I am a more well adjusted person.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Because of horror movies.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: And I again, know thyself.
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: That may not be true for you, and it's certainly not true across the board.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: But for me, for you, it's 100% true.
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: And a lot of people out there, it very it's true.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, the horror is like you said, it's only getting bigger and bigger now.
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: And I when I talk to people who aren't into horror, that's usually my gateway or my way to try to hook them.
- 44:29SPEAKER_02: Is um you say you don't like it, but have you really given it a fair shake?
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: And if they say no, I haven't really, then I just encourage them just do yourself a favor and just give it an honest to goodness try.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: Because I'm betting that you're gonna find a lot of benefits that you weren't aware of.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: Right now, if you give it an honest to goodness try and you're still like, it's not for me, totally fine.
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: 100% totally fine.
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: Go watch the things that that do make you feel good.
- 45:06SPEAKER_02: But I I think a lot of people sleep on it and they shouldn't.
- 45:10SPEAKER_00: That's the thing about horde too, is there's so many different niches for people.
- 45:13SPEAKER_00: If you well, oh, that was just too bloody.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: We can find me a horror movie that matches your personality.
- 45:18SPEAKER_00: I'm about a hundred percent guaranteed on it.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, there's there's tons of very scary movies that have almost no blood in them.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no gore.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: Because I've got buddies who absolutely despise some of the horror movies that are my top shelf ones, but they go, Man, this one is right up my alley.
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: You know, oh there you go, man.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you do like core, you just don't know it.
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:41SPEAKER_02: My wife, she says she doesn't like horror.
- 45:46SPEAKER_00: But she loved obsession.
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: She did.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: What I have found, you know, being married to my wife for as long as I have, and having all these different conversations and having watched all these movies together, um, what I have found is if it's not real or couldn't be real, it does nothing for her.
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: If I wa if I show her a movie where it's just like vampires and werewolves, she not into it.
- 46:13SPEAKER_02: She's like, this is boring.
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: And she into possession.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: Um not so much, not so much.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: But if it's if it could really happen to you.
- 46:24SPEAKER_02: Silence of the lamps.
- 46:25SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 46:26SPEAKER_02: Gotcha.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: If it's like a serial killer kind of a thing, and like she is glued to it.
- 46:34SPEAKER_02: So seven, I bet she would love.
- 46:36SPEAKER_02: She loves seven, she loves Dexter.
- 46:39SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, she loves, you know, um, things like that where it's like this is scary because this could happen when you step out your door to it.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: And it probably has happened, right?
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: So it's just everyone's got a different niche, like you're saying.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, that is what makes it great.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: It is what makes it great.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: Because it'd be boring if everyone loved the exact same thing.
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 47:01SPEAKER_02: And you know, if you were raised on the splatter films of the 80s, then yeah, there's nothing better.
- 47:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's nothing better than a good bloodbath, you know.
- 47:15SPEAKER_02: But that's not all horror is not at all.
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: Way more out there, way more out there, and that's the fun of it.
- 47:21SPEAKER_00: I like to venture out to the unknown and test the waters, and maybe I don't like it, maybe they but then again, you know, maybe I shall find something.
- 47:29SPEAKER_00: Holy moly, I went my whole life thinking these were gonna be horrible, this genre, and I'm acting, I'm digging it, man.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the fun part.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: Well, like you said, with you know, obsession.
- 47:39SPEAKER_02: If I just told you the premise, like, um, do you want to watch a horror movie about a guy who wishes this girl would love him?
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'd go, man, it kind of sounds cheesy and boring to me, not really up my alley, but farther from the truth.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's yeah, it's a blast.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: That doesn't sound scary.
- 47:57SPEAKER_02: Appealing to me at all in the sense.
- 47:59SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 48:00SPEAKER_02: But what a what a great movie it was because people are always trying new things, people are always turning over new stones and seeing what's underneath.
- 48:09SPEAKER_02: And um you never, like you said, you never know what is gonna appeal to you until you expose yourself to it.
- 48:16SPEAKER_00: Uh the one thing I note, I'm I've watched comedy with big groups.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: I've watched don't tell anyone I ever told you this, or I'll beat you.
- 48:24SPEAKER_00: I've watched Twilight with a big group of people.
- 48:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and there's just something about having a room full of people watch a horror movie, you dim the lights to it, the atmosphere, it's electric.
- 48:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can't describe it the oh and the oh and that and everyone doing it, and then when the lights come back on and we can breathe.
- 48:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, we all made it through this together.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 48:48SPEAKER_00: There, it's I can't describe it, Paul, but it's magnetic.
- 48:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:52SPEAKER_02: And you know, I I told the story about me and my buddy back in California went and saw Cabinet in the Woods, and his girlfriend didn't get it because she's not, she didn't have like the foundational knowledge of and all the tropes that were stuck.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 49:09SPEAKER_02: But I could call her up right now, like if I had her number, I could call her up right now, and I could say, remember that time we went and saw Cabinet in the Woods, and we would instantly have this rapport and this conversation and this common ground.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: And so, like, like you said, when you go through something together, you're bonded, and there's just no way around it, you know, and it's so cool.
- 49:28SPEAKER_02: And this can happen through other genres, you know, you can go see uh the latest Marvel movie with your buddy, and then you guys are always gonna have you know that in common.
- 49:42SPEAKER_02: But when you take the psychological components that we just broke down and then apply them to these situations, I think the bond is maybe a little stronger.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, and that's because what's horror, it's usually death related.
- 49:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know what I mean in the grieving process and get through hard times, yeah.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, I wanna, we're almost out of time here, but I want to shout out a couple of uh YouTube channels that I've been watching.
- 50:11SPEAKER_02: I want to meet too.
- 50:12SPEAKER_02: You go ahead.
- 50:13SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 50:13SPEAKER_02: So when you and I started this podcast, the whole crux of this was I asked you if you had any good podcasts, horror podcasts that you could recommend, and you didn't really have any.
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: And you asked me the same question, and I didn't really have any.
- 50:28SPEAKER_02: And we talked about what we liked and didn't like about the ones that were out there, and that ultimately led us to the decision to make this podcast and make it, you know, the way it is.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think one day, hopefully sooner rather than later, we will be a podcast that uh streams video to YouTube.
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: Um, and there are a lot of people already doing that.
- 50:59SPEAKER_02: Not to interrupt you, does Donamantas do that, Paul?
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: Not every episode, but they do a little bit of a lot of people.
- 51:05SPEAKER_02: But they do uh for certain episodes, I believe that they do.
- 51:09SPEAKER_02: And I want to get in touch with Sam and see if he'll let us come up there and try it out.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: Okay, try our podcast out live on camera, and then we can stream it to YouTube just as a trial run, see see if we like it, see what the response is.
- 51:26SPEAKER_02: But I've found a lot of people who not only are doing this on YouTube, but they're doing it kind of our way, the way that we have said, like, let's stay on topic, let's not bash.
- 51:39SPEAKER_02: Be more positive than negative.
- 51:40SPEAKER_02: That's my main rule always.
- 51:42SPEAKER_02: And I have found two that do this really well, and I just want to shout them out.
- 51:46SPEAKER_02: Um, there's one guy, his you his YouTube channel is called The Horror Geek, and he has different um like he'll have one episode where he's doing A, and then he'll have another episode where he's doing B.
- 52:02SPEAKER_02: But one of his segments, I guess you might want to call it, is called Sick Flicks.
- 52:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, cool.
- 52:08SPEAKER_02: And so he talks about, usually from the 80s, kind of lesser-known, like really gross out, over-the-top special effects kind of gross movies.
- 52:21SPEAKER_02: And and he's got a really good sense of humor, and he just kind of walks you through the movie and it's called Horror Geek.
- 52:29SPEAKER_02: His channel is called Horror Geek.
- 52:31SPEAKER_00: I'll check that out.
- 52:31SPEAKER_02: But my favorite segment or whatever you want to call it the sick flick sick flicks, check that out.
- 52:37SPEAKER_02: It's really, really good.
- 52:39SPEAKER_02: And um, then I just discovered this other one uh last week, and I've been watching it pretty regularly since I've discovered it.
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: It's called Night Nerves.
- 52:47SPEAKER_02: Night Nerves.
- 52:49SPEAKER_02: Nerves, yeah.
- 52:50SPEAKER_02: Okay, like uh my nerves are fried from watching too much horror movie.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: But he breaks down uh, you know, just basically his favorites, but he just does a really good job, you know, just bringing his insight to it, um, very knowledgeable, uh and just easy to listen to, fun to listen to.
- 53:11SPEAKER_02: So these are two um podcasters, for lack of a better term, who I just felt some camaraderie with when I watch them because I feel like they kind of you can tell they love horror, yeah.
- 53:25SPEAKER_02: Right and and they're going for they're they're trying to do the thing that we're trying to do, which is you know, we're not punching down, we're we're building up the people who are making these films.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: That's it, yeah.
- 53:38SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 53:39SPEAKER_02: So check those two uh YouTube channels out Night Nerves and the Horror Geek.
- 53:45SPEAKER_00: Mine is dead meat.
- 53:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 53:48SPEAKER_00: And it's he does kill counts.
- 53:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:50SPEAKER_00: And I mean, I'm I love watching, and he usually does everything that's newer.
- 53:56SPEAKER_00: As long as it comes out on Blu-ray, he's he's done it.
- 53:59SPEAKER_00: So he gets pretty in-depth about all the movies too.
- 54:03SPEAKER_00: And he'll bash them.
- 54:04SPEAKER_00: That's the only thing I don't like about it.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: He'll go if it's a bad like movie, he he knocks it sometimes, and I I'm not crazy about that, but I love all the the insight you get from watching him.
- 54:14SPEAKER_02: I will say Dead Meat is yeah, one of my one of the channels that I definitely subscribe to and watch frequently.
- 54:20SPEAKER_02: Um, he he will tell you straight up if he doesn't like it.
- 54:24SPEAKER_02: He will even say things along the lines of like, when is this movie gonna be over?
- 54:31SPEAKER_00: And I thought I'm like, man, I love this movie.
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: And he does curse quite a bit on his channel.
- 54:38SPEAKER_02: So that is something to just keep in mind if you're learning about dead meat from us and you're going to go check it out.
- 54:46SPEAKER_02: Um, but they're they're probably the biggest in the game as far as horror content on YouTube goes.
- 54:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, they were off small.
- 54:55SPEAKER_02: He started off just like we did.
- 54:57SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 54:58SPEAKER_02: But I mean, he's big enough that he had Corey.
- 55:01SPEAKER_02: They had a cameo in Scream 4.
- 55:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: Or Scream Four, not four.
- 55:06SPEAKER_02: Was it not four?
- 55:07SPEAKER_02: No, four or five.
- 55:09SPEAKER_02: It was one of those two.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: I thought it was four.
- 55:12SPEAKER_00: We'll have to agree to disagree.
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 55:14SPEAKER_00: Well, he had a can of yeah, he did.
- 55:16SPEAKER_02: He had a cameo on in screen, yeah.
- 55:18SPEAKER_02: You know, because his that's how big his podcast is.
- 55:22SPEAKER_02: And um, yeah, he's he's he's very funny.
- 55:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh him and his wife do a podcast, I think.
- 55:28SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: They do, yeah.
- 55:30SPEAKER_02: Uh so yeah.
- 55:32SPEAKER_02: Good, good uh recommendations, check them out.
- 55:35SPEAKER_00: I want to one more shout out, please, before we leave.
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you guys have to go to your local spirit Halloween.
- 55:42SPEAKER_00: I've been three times now, and Paul hasn't started working there yet, I don't think.
- 55:45SPEAKER_00: But each time I went, I've spent over a hundred bucks on new masks, and the people are always great, they're helpful, and the atmosphere has always been so fun.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: I plan on going again this weekend because I've heard you all have the grabber pack mask that comes with the three treatables.
- 56:01SPEAKER_00: And I've got to get that one.
- 56:02SPEAKER_00: So that's what I'm looking forward to getting.
- 56:03SPEAKER_02: You can take it apart and wear it in any configuration.
- 56:05SPEAKER_00: You guys are getting all my money.
- 56:07SPEAKER_02: They have some great masks this year.
- 56:09SPEAKER_02: I did have my first day of work uh last Monday, and I had a blast, and I'm looking forward to going back this weekend.
- 56:16SPEAKER_02: And uh yeah, they have a really good selection of new masks this week.
- 56:20SPEAKER_02: They really do.
- 56:20SPEAKER_02: And I have last year I waited till the end of the season before they got any of my money, and this year I've already spent money.
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I've already spent money there.
- 56:29SPEAKER_02: Um, so next episode coming to you in a week.
- 56:33SPEAKER_02: Um, I asked you what you want to talk about, and one of the things that you brought up.
- 56:38SPEAKER_02: You did send me a list, and one of the things on that list was um international horror.
- 56:43SPEAKER_02: And I want to take that idea and zoom in even more.
- 56:49SPEAKER_02: I want to talk about Asian horror.
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, brother.
- 56:52SPEAKER_00: Woo, we're gonna be getting that's gonna get nasty people.
- 56:55SPEAKER_00: Civilization got some dark horror, man.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: When you talk about specifically, I would say Japanese cinema and Korean cinema.
