- 0:00Would you live in a house? Raise a family there?
- 0:04Even if you knew that a horrific crime had taken place within its
- 0:08walls, could you overcome the negative energy or let it
- 0:13consume you? One family had to answer these
- 0:16questions as what appeared to be their dream home became a living
- 0:22nightmare. This is the infamously haunting
- 0:25story of The Amityville Horror of Long Island, New York, also
- 0:31known as the Lutz family case, and you most certainly will not
- 0:37want to watch this video. In a dark room
- 0:53the years 1975, George Lutz taps an anxious finger on his
- 0:59steering wheel as he eyed the windows of the house ahead of
- 1:03him. His wife, Kathy, smiled as they
- 1:07slowly pulled into the driveway. The two are hoping to find a new
- 1:11home for them and their three children and have seemingly
- 1:15stumbled upon the perfect house for the perfect price.
- 1:19As they speak with the realtor, they are amazed at the sheer
- 1:23size and beauty of the home. It had many rooms, ornate
- 1:28woodwork, a boathouse, and access to water.
- 1:33It was truly a massive property, especially compared to what they
- 1:38had been used to. However, towards the end of the
- 1:41tour, the real estate agent would inform them that a year
- 1:45prior the home had been the site of multiple grisly murders and
- 1:51famous ones locally at that the De Feo family.
- 1:56The home, of course, had been cleaned and remodeled without
- 2:00being told. No one would even know that
- 2:02anything had ever occurred there.
- 2:04Or so they thought. So after a brief discussion
- 2:08among themselves, the Lutz were sold based on the sheer beauty
- 2:13and low price. So they decided to make an offer
- 2:17on the home, and their offer was quickly accepted.
- 2:22They purchased what they thought was their dream come true, a
- 2:26fresh start for their large family granting everyone the
- 2:30room they would need to grow and live.
- 2:34After closing the deal and securing the keys, the family
- 2:38would begin to move in the weeks to come.
- 2:41During the move the family thought to have the house
- 2:44blessed and the priest who would carry this out was a man named
- 2:49Father Ray. As he carried furniture into the
- 2:52house. George motioned for Ray to come
- 2:55on in, so there to do a specific job and not wanting to interfere
- 3:01with the moving efforts, Father Ray went about his business and
- 3:06began to bless the house, moving from room to room, praying and
- 3:12sprinkling droplets of holy water upon the walls.
- 3:17In an hour or so, Father Ray was finished and stepped out of the
- 3:22house. However, upon making eye contact
- 3:26with George, he had a very concerned look on his face.
- 3:31George attempted to pay him for taking the time to come out and
- 3:35help them, but Father Ray declined.
- 3:38Before the priest left, he said that he felt something strange
- 3:43in one of the upstairs bedrooms, a dark, menacing presence.
- 3:49He hoped the blessing would help, but was concerned if
- 3:52anyone was going to be specifically staying in that
- 3:56room. George would reassure Father Ray
- 3:59by telling him that they weren't planning on using that bedroom
- 4:02for anything other than sewing. Ray would reply with good just
- 4:08as long as no one sleeps in there.
- 4:11Weirded out by the interaction, but assuming the father was just
- 4:15a bit superstitious with his Catholic beliefs, George would
- 4:19finish up moving the family in and they would all enjoy dinner
- 4:24together and their new home for the first time.
- 4:28They all seemingly were in love, but those wonderful butterflies
- 4:32floating in their stomachs would soon turn to ravenous locusts.
- 4:38Shortly after the Lutz's moved into their new home, they would
- 4:42begin to experience small, odd happenings.
- 4:47These events would include feeling spots of intense cold
- 4:52randomly throughout various areas of the house, as well as
- 4:56seeing shadowy figures out of the corner of their eyes.
- 5:01But as they would rush to see whatever it was, the apparition
- 5:06would quickly vanish, and these figures would seemingly
- 5:10contribute to the omnipresent feeling of being watched by
- 5:16invisible eyes. As the family continued to live
- 5:20in the house, drip by drip, a sense of unease began to fill
- 5:26the air. The phenomenon would continue
- 5:30and soon the family would begin to be jolted awake in the night,
- 5:34typically around 3:30 AM. Loud banging noises as if a gun
- 5:40had been fired inside the house or within very close proximity
- 5:44to their ears, violently shattering any peaceful sleep
- 5:49they may have been having. However, upon waking up fully
- 5:54panicked, there was nothing out of place, no one in the house
- 6:00that wasn't supposed to be there, and all the doors and
- 6:04windows were closed and locked. The culmination of the strange
- 6:10activity would only continue to escalate.
- 6:13One morning the family woke up to a startling sight.
- 6:17A bizarre black slime like substance was oozing from the
- 6:22key holes of their home and a trail of this mystery liquid was
- 6:28leading from room to room, never having seen anything like it.
- 6:33George, who was very adept in construction, was confused to
- 6:37say the least, unsure of what else to do, and with the day
- 6:42looming to start, they would slowly just all clean it up as
- 6:48days turned to several weeks. Since the Lutz family had moved
- 6:52into the Amityville home, the loud noises that would wake them
- 6:56during the night would only continue to get worse and would
- 7:01soon also be accompanied by footsteps and banging throughout
- 7:05the house at all hours of the day and night.
- 7:10During one episode, George had woke out of a sound sleep
- 7:14randomly and was unable to go back to bed.
- 7:18As he made his way to the kitchen for a drink, he heard
- 7:21what sounded like music blasting from the basement.
- 7:26He knew there wasn't a stereo or radio present down there with
- 7:31the hair on the back of his neck standing on end.
- 7:34He would slowly descend the stairs, but upon his foot,
- 7:39leaving the last step and landing on the basement floor,
- 7:44the music would cease. Despite what he had heard just
- 7:49minutes prior. There was no sign of anything or
- 7:54anyone. This event was particularly
- 7:57unnerving because George was not Privy to superstitious or
- 8:02strange things. He didn't believe in ghosts or
- 8:06anything of the sort, but even with these convictions, he
- 8:11failed to come to terms with what he had just experienced.
- 8:16In the coming days, the family began to notice more unsettling
- 8:20manifestations within their home.
- 8:24It's the middle of December now, and the sewing room, the same
- 8:28room that Father Ray had felt uncomfortable, had slowly but
- 8:33surely began to be infested with flies.
- 8:37This was bizarre to say the least.
- 8:40Although not impossible, it is very rare for flies to infest a
- 8:45particular area, especially in the middle of winter.
- 8:50At first they thought perhaps the house being older, maybe it
- 8:54was something they weren't used to experiencing.
- 8:57But despite their best efforts to rid themselves of the
- 9:00insects, they could never fully get rid of the infestation.
- 9:05Day in and day out, maggots and flies seemingly materialized Out
- 9:12of nowhere, the Lutz family soon found themselves changing in
- 9:17various ways. George began to seclude himself
- 9:21from his family and developed a strange obsession with the
- 9:24fireplace. Constantly complaining that he
- 9:28was cold, he chopped and stockpiled as much wood as he
- 9:32possibly could, but no matter how many logs he piled on the
- 9:36flames of the fire, the fire never seemed to manage to warm
- 9:42him. Kathy too began to change and
- 9:45experience her own events, and her experiences happened when
- 9:50she was often alone and vulnerable.
- 9:54She would feel the ice cold touch of unseen hands, and at
- 9:59one point the hands even braided her hair.
- 10:04These events were too eventually witnessed by George.
- 10:08One night, as the winter moon hung above them, the couple
- 10:12slept. Cathy then suddenly woke up with
- 10:17the gasp. However, upon turning to his
- 10:21wife to ask her what was wrong, George saw staring back at him
- 10:26as he awakened the face of an old woman instead of the face of
- 10:32his wife. The shock quickly turned to
- 10:35terror as the couple attempted to figure out just what had
- 10:39happened to Kathy, with her at a loss for words as she gazed into
- 10:44the mirror with her husband just as quick as it had came.
- 10:48The Mirage would dissipate hours later, revealing Kathy's
- 10:53youthful face once again. The Lutzes by this time knew
- 10:58that they had been dealing with something paranormal, although
- 11:02they were surprised to be thinking that George, especially
- 11:07at first, not wanting to involve anyone else with whatever
- 11:10presence that was in the house, they tried blessing the home
- 11:14themselves. Kathy, who had always been
- 11:18religious, was the one who attempted the blessing.
- 11:22She moved from room to room, opening up the windows and
- 11:26blessing each space. Things seem to be going well
- 11:31until suddenly one of the windows slammed upon one of
- 11:34their children's hands. This was no ordinary injury,
- 11:39however. The boy's hands were horribly
- 11:42bruised and pounded flat. George would later describe them
- 11:46as flat as a pancake and that he immediately knew that they had
- 11:51to get him to the hospital. Panic set in as the family
- 11:55geared up to rush to the hospital, but as they all
- 11:58approached the front door, their son's hands were somehow now
- 12:02completely normal. This was bizarre for George
- 12:06Cathy, as well as the other children to witness to say the
- 12:11least. But it was just as shocking to
- 12:14their son as well. None of them could figure out
- 12:17what had just taken place. It was as if the house didn't
- 12:21want them to leave. Another shift began to take
- 12:26place among the family. Following this experience.
- 12:30Tension within the home became so thick that you could cut it
- 12:34with a knife. George and Kathy began to fight,
- 12:38and we're now barely talking. The children, too, would begin
- 12:42to act more aggressively towards one another as well as their
- 12:46parents, leading to escalating punishments.
- 12:50And throughout this time, the youngest child, Missy, developed
- 12:55a relationship with an imaginary friend that she named Jody.
- 13:01Jody lived in her bedroom and would reveal herself in the form
- 13:05of a large pig with glowing blood red eyes.
- 13:10Thinking this description to be strange, and also thinking that
- 13:15it was just their daughter's imagination, George and Kathy
- 13:18wrote Missy's new friend off. But at one point the couple
- 13:23would pass by Missy's bedroom and upon listening in, they
- 13:27would hear their daughter talking to someone or something
- 13:30in her room. But whatever it was was
- 13:34answering her back in a deep toned voice, weirded out, they
- 13:40opened the door to the girls room.
- 13:42Within they would find their daughter talking to something
- 13:46outside her window together. The Lutzes would see two large
- 13:51red eyes staring at them from outside.
- 13:55Terrified, they began to snatch their daughter up in an effort
- 13:58to get her to safety, but Missy would attempt to calm them down.
- 14:03She told them that it was only Jody, and she wanted to know.
- 14:08If she could come into the house, Missy would continue to
- 14:12have strange interactions with the entity known as Jody.
- 14:18The family became more and more convinced that something was
- 14:21horrendously wrong. As they recalled when they had
- 14:25initially toured the house, the realtor had shuffled in
- 14:29discomfort. She said she wasn't sure if she
- 14:32should have told them before or after she had showed them the
- 14:35house. The couple, raising their
- 14:38eyebrows, asked her what she meant.
- 14:41She then told them that this house was where the De Feo
- 14:44murders had taken place. The couple remembered a year
- 14:48prior when the newspaper's headlines had described the
- 14:52gruesome murders of an entire family and all at the hands of
- 14:57their 23 year old son, Ronald Defeo, Junior.
- 15:01With a rival in his hands, he crept into each room and shot
- 15:07his parents and all of his siblings in their beds while
- 15:11they slept. All victims were found face
- 15:15down, each one ever having woken up during the slaughter of the
- 15:21other. During the trial, Ronald claimed
- 15:24that voices told him to kill his family, but that he had no
- 15:29recollection of the murders ever taking place.
- 15:34He was ultimately convicted and given multiple life sentences in
- 15:38prison. Concerned for their children,
- 15:42George and Kathy had asked them if they would be comfortable
- 15:45living in a place where such tragedy had occurred.
- 15:49The children nodded and the deal was made, and in order to put
- 15:53themselves more at ease, they had called Father Ray to bless
- 15:57the house. Remembering the strange look and
- 16:01words of Father Ray, George decided to give him a call.
- 16:06During that conversation, Father Ray would reveal that during his
- 16:10blessing, he had entered what was now known as the Sewing room
- 16:15upstairs, and here he was shaken to his core.
- 16:20He had heard a dark, evil voice which told him to get out.
- 16:28Unsure of what to make of this, George took the father's words
- 16:31to heart this time and tried to figure out some kind of
- 16:35solution. That night, George laid down
- 16:39next to his wife, staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep.
- 16:45He pondered the fact that everyone else slept on their
- 16:48stomachs except for him. They all slept face down, just
- 16:54as the Defeos had. As he laid there, he began
- 16:59listening to the massive storm that was raging outside, when
- 17:04suddenly there was a bright burst of lightning that lit up
- 17:08the entire bedroom. Temporarily blinding George.
- 17:13He called out to Kathy and reached for her, but Kathy was
- 17:17not by his side. Once regaining his sight, George
- 17:22now saw that his wife was levitating and floating towards
- 17:26the ceiling. He then began to hear loud bangs
- 17:30emanating throughout the house, coupled by the screams of his
- 17:35children. Their beds were lifting up and
- 17:39slamming on the floor by themselves, panicking to wake
- 17:44his wife up. George screamed her name and as
- 17:48she came back to consciousness, she slowly descended back to the
- 17:53floor. At the moment, unable to fully
- 17:57absorb the situation, George alerted Kathy and the two began
- 18:01to rush towards their kids. As they darted out of the
- 18:05bedroom, they witnessed yet another odd situation.
- 18:10Their dog was walking backwards in circles while vomiting as
- 18:18they ran down the hall. Lightning would flash and
- 18:21Thunder would roll as heavy rain pelted the windows of their
- 18:27home. Upon running towards their kids,
- 18:31they then gathered the children and their dog and rushed
- 18:35everyone to the living room downstairs.
- 18:38As the storm raged outside, they contemplated what they should do
- 18:43next, as monstrous bangs and growls could be heard coming
- 18:49from upstairs. Together as a family, they would
- 18:53weather this hellish, stormy night the following morning.
- 19:00Unsure of their plans, but knowing that they cannot stay in
- 19:03their home, the Lutzes fled upon their departure.
- 19:09They had only managed to live within the home for exactly 29
- 19:14days, and despite the entire family witnessing the storm,
- 19:20there was no record that had ever existed.
- 19:23No weather reports, no forecasts, nothing.
- 19:30Trying to make sense of the horror that plagued their
- 19:32family. George and Kathy, upon an
- 19:35acquaintance's recommendation, would contact world renowned
- 19:39paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in just a few
- 19:45days. The Warrens would enter the home
- 19:47for an investigation. As soon as Lorraine crossed the
- 19:51threshold of the door, she immediately began to sense a
- 19:55heavy sadness, a depression that permeated the entire house like
- 20:01a fog as the couple did their initial walkthrough upon
- 20:06entering the basement. Ed described feeling a powerful,
- 20:11inhuman presence. He said it felt like standing
- 20:15beneath a waterfall, the sensation of having something
- 20:18heavy bearing down upon your shoulders and soul.
- 20:24After the initial investigation, the Warrens compiled a team of
- 20:28psychics to assist them. Among them was a woman named
- 20:33Mary Pastorella, and Mary considered herself to be a time
- 20:38Walker, a person capable of visualizing and experiencing the
- 20:43past of a location. During her walkthrough, Mary
- 20:48began reciting the Lord's Prayer.
- 20:51As she made her way up the stairs step by step, she would
- 20:56witness a group of figures saying the prayer backwards.
- 21:02This sight concerned and deeply disturbed her.
- 21:07After completing the investigation, Lorraine stated
- 21:10that whatever is here, and my estimation most definitely is of
- 21:16a negative nature. It has nothing to do with anyone
- 21:20who had once walked the earth in human form.
- 21:24It comes right from the bowels of the earth.
- 21:29The Warrens told the Lutzes that they felt that their house could
- 21:32only be saved through a cleansing performed by an
- 21:36ordained priest, and an experienced one at that.
- 21:41However, the Lutzes were uncomfortable with this, saying
- 21:45that they felt like they'd be risking their lives, and how
- 21:49could they be asked to do that for a house?
- 21:53Instead, they decided not to pursue the cleansing.
- 21:57They would cut their losses and return the property at a massive
- 22:01loss to the bank. They chose this route instead of
- 22:05putting themselves or their children in any further danger.
- 22:11Although the Lutz is no longer owned or lived in the house,
- 22:15this would be far from the end of their story.
- 22:19Years later, a book and movie adaptation would popularize
- 22:22their story along with the allegations of it all being a
- 22:26hoax. However, this seems unlikely,
- 22:30especially since George and Kathy lost not only their life
- 22:34savings, but the majority of their credibility due to the
- 22:38story. They would continue to maintain
- 22:42the validity of their experiences for the rest of
- 22:45their lives, George once stated in a 2002 interview.
- 22:51It's my prayer that everyone in this room never go through such
- 22:55a thing. But if you know someone that
- 22:57does, the hardest thing for people is the loss of being able
- 23:02to communicate with anyone else about it, not being able to find
- 23:07anyone that can intelligently help.
- 23:11It's not talked about, it's not understood, and when it happens
- 23:15to you, you become a burden to everyone else.
- 23:21Alongside losing their credibility and life savings on
- 23:25the House, they had also left every item within the house and
- 23:29on the property. This included a boat, furniture,
- 23:34additional vehicles, everything. They had only departed with the
- 23:39clothes on their backs. So was this story true or false,
- 23:45hoax or reality? That conclusion is ultimately up
- 23:51to you to decide. George and Kathy would divorce
- 23:55in the 1980s, but remained good friends until the very end.
- 24:01Kathy would pass on August 17th of 2004 and George on May 8th of
- 24:082006. Their children, from what I saw,
- 24:13are all still with us. Some lead more private lives,
- 24:17while others are more so in the public eye with their
- 24:21professions. The agent that initially sought
- 24:25the Lutz is out following their departure from the Amityville
- 24:28house ended up essentially tricking George and Kathy into
- 24:33signing away their rights to their story, so they had no say
- 24:37in the book that was written or the movies that followed.
- 24:42They also didn't profit from them whatsoever, even though
- 24:46their story, their experience and their names were all used.
- 24:52The house known as 112 Ocean Ave. still exists, but it has
- 24:58been renovated and the address changed to discourage sightseers
- 25:03from visiting it. The quarter round windows have
- 25:06been removed and the house today looks considerably different
- 25:11from its depiction in the films. The local residents and
- 25:16authorities in Amityville, NY are unhappy with the attention
- 25:21that The Amityville Horror brings to the town, intend to
- 25:25decline requests to discuss it publicly.
- 25:29And who can blame them? Ultimately, the Lutz's family's
- 25:34paranormal experiences paint an all too familiar and terrifying
- 25:39story. One of horror, terror, and
- 25:43confusion. Like a family landing on a
- 25:46spider's web, once the house has you, it never wants to let you
- 25:52go. Luckily for them, however, they
- 25:56did ultimately escape from the demon that was lurking and
- 26:02waiting to consume them all. Thank you guys so much for
- 26:07watching this new video. Please give it lots of love for
