- 0:08Speaker 1: bringing you the Folkstone and Hive Sports Show. On today's show,
- 0:18Speaker 1: we have local football, we have junior hockey where the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Optimists had two teams in the national finals. We've got
- 0:26Speaker 1: some running news, running runners and runners have been out all.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Over the globe. I'll tell you about that later.
- 0:31Speaker 1: And bringing up to date with the wheelchair basketball scene.
- 0:42Speaker 1: And we've got a special interview with Danielle Black from
- 0:45Speaker 1: the Folkston the Netball League. She's going to tell us
- 0:48Speaker 1: all about the local netball scene and they've got a
- 0:52Speaker 1: tournament coming up on Saturday. But on this beautiful Thursday lunchtime,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and he's just looking good as well. You know, I
- 1:06Speaker 1: check the weather forecast and I'll tell you about that
- 1:08Speaker 1: a bit later as well. But we're going to get
- 1:11Speaker 1: you in the mood with a summer song and this
- 1:12Speaker 1: will take you back. This is the Beach Boys and
- 1:15Speaker 1: California Girls. Yeah, what a brilliant summer song. On this
- 1:52Speaker 1: lovely Thursday lunchtime. Some light two you step outside and
- 1:57Speaker 1: that's freezing. No, you enjoy the Sunshine's going to be
- 2:01Speaker 1: a cracking easter, I reckon.
- 2:03Speaker 2: So it's just to put you in the mood right now.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Now, I was hoping to get Danielle Black from the
- 2:09Speaker 1: Folks to the Netplele League into the studio today, but
- 2:12Speaker 1: circumstances changed, so we met up at the Three Hills
- 2:15Speaker 1: where I recorded the following interview. Now, we went up
- 2:18Speaker 1: with Three Hills and we kind of wanted to try
- 2:20Speaker 1: and find a nice sort of quiet spot. So they've
- 2:22Speaker 1: got like a glass conservatory balcony out there overlooking a
- 2:27Speaker 1: overlooking at the cricket pitch and it looked looked lovely
- 2:30Speaker 1: and hope it was a tad hat in there. So anyway,
- 2:33Speaker 1: we've managed to find a door to open, and I
- 2:36Speaker 1: think so it sounds a little bit echoey, but I
- 2:39Speaker 1: think we did pick up a tractor or two in
- 2:42Speaker 1: the background doing his job. So anyway, let's have a
- 2:44Speaker 1: little listen to myself and Danielle chatting. I'm joined now
- 2:48Speaker 1: by Danielle Black and we're going to chat all about netble.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Hello, Danielle, how are you.
- 2:52Speaker 3: I'm good? Thank you. It's a lovely day today.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Yeah, it's lovely sitting up here and he's like a
- 2:58Speaker 1: glasshouse today and in the greenhouse. So daniel before we
- 3:01Speaker 1: go on to nepball. Tell us a bit about yourself.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Did you like sport at school? Did you you know,
- 3:06Speaker 1: get round in the bye shids and every flag?
- 3:08Speaker 3: Or did you.
- 3:11Speaker 2: And did you play netball at school?
- 3:12Speaker 4: Interestingly enough, yeah, played netball since primary school and then
- 3:16Speaker 4: went on to do it in secondary school. After I
- 3:19Speaker 4: left secondary school, I decided to take it up at
- 3:22Speaker 4: the Ashford Netball League in Stanhope. Played there for twelve years,
- 3:27Speaker 4: and then I decided to because I live in Folkston,
- 3:30Speaker 4: decided to make folks in my main team and then
- 3:33Speaker 4: I mainly stay here and play games, and then I
- 3:36Speaker 4: umpire in Dover.
- 3:37Speaker 1: LL do you so, Well, we're here today really to
- 3:40Speaker 1: talk about the folks in netball league, but there's lots
- 3:43Speaker 1: of other things that go along with it. So first
- 3:46Speaker 1: of all, tell us a little bit about the league itself.
- 3:49Speaker 4: So our games we play every week, usually not in
- 3:52Speaker 4: half term, and we play them on Wednesday evenings, and
- 3:55Speaker 4: we tend to have two different divisions.
- 3:58Speaker 3: We've got a Division two and the Division one and.
- 4:02Speaker 4: We have about ten teams in our league at the moment.
- 4:05Speaker 4: We play on Wednesday evenings. Games start at quarter to
- 4:09Speaker 4: seven and then we have our second games at eight
- 4:11Speaker 4: o'clock as well, so.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You can get through the whole evening with all these teams.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Yep.
- 4:18Speaker 3: I mean they're scheduled ahead of time.
- 4:20Speaker 4: We have someone that schedules them along with the umpires.
- 4:24Speaker 4: When we start playing Netbort on a Wednesday evening, it
- 4:27Speaker 4: tends to sort of rotate. We play the teams twice
- 4:32Speaker 4: in our season and then that we get the results
- 4:34Speaker 4: at the end of the season.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Right, okay, So and what is your actual role in
- 4:38Speaker 1: the folks of Nepal League.
- 4:40Speaker 4: So I have recently joined the committee and I just
- 4:44Speaker 4: deal with the social media side of things. So I'm
- 4:47Speaker 4: the one that you'll kind of see on our Facebook
- 4:48Speaker 4: page posting results and dealing with any inquiries that way.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Oh so you're posting results, I must I must have
- 4:55Speaker 1: a little chat about results because I've been following the
- 4:57Speaker 1: results for a few years now. But there has been
- 5:00Speaker 1: two amazing results in recent times which I've never seen before.
- 5:04Speaker 1: There was two draws. One was twenty nine ALL and
- 5:07Speaker 1: one was thirty nine ALL. Now that is really unheard of.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Was you involved in any of those?
- 5:12Speaker 3: Yeah? Actually they were both, Mike.
- 5:16Speaker 4: So this year my team which I'm part of Tigers
- 5:19Speaker 4: has moved from Division two up to Division one and
- 5:23Speaker 4: our first game of the season we played a new
- 5:26Speaker 4: team called Merston and they were a tough team, but
- 5:29Speaker 4: we ended up with the thirty nine to all, which
- 5:33Speaker 4: as a shooter, obviously you or anyone wants to win
- 5:35Speaker 4: on the whole team, but yeah, I wish I could
- 5:38Speaker 4: just got that one more goal. And then the following
- 5:40Speaker 4: week straight after that, we played Scorpions. Yeah it was
- 5:46Speaker 4: Scorpions that we played and then we ended up twenty
- 5:49Speaker 4: nine or and even we couldn't believe ourselves.
- 5:51Speaker 1: So that is amazing. Yeah, I mean the game itself.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Let's say, you know what sort of age group is
- 5:57Speaker 1: playing now? Are they mums or they are there many
- 6:01Speaker 1: youngsters coming through?
- 6:02Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 6:02Speaker 4: Th we have two main youth teams that play in
- 6:06Speaker 4: our league, which are the Scorpions, and we've got Stingrays
- 6:11Speaker 4: as well, which are one of the newer teams and
- 6:13Speaker 4: their secondary school age sort of from age thirteen to fifteen,
- 6:20Speaker 4: and they are coached by another Danielle. And we've also
- 6:24Speaker 4: got teams that Rachel coaches and Emily coaches. Emily coaches
- 6:29Speaker 4: are slightly younger age group. I believe sort of eleven
- 6:31Speaker 4: and twelve, and I hope to because I believe there's
- 6:35Speaker 4: a waiting list for year fives and six is hopefully
- 6:38Speaker 4: sometime in the near future.
- 6:40Speaker 2: All right, so there is a lot. This amazing is
- 6:43Speaker 2: to me.
- 6:43Speaker 1: It's going I think he's going under the radar, all
- 6:46Speaker 1: this youth and it's so good to hear because I
- 6:50Speaker 1: don't really think NT bulls played much in schools now,
- 6:53Speaker 1: is it not?
- 6:53Speaker 3: As far as I'm aware, I don't.
- 6:55Speaker 4: I personally don't think it's played as much as I remember.
- 6:58Speaker 4: I think it's occasionally brought in maybe for half a term,
- 7:02Speaker 4: which is definitely not enough time to get a good
- 7:05Speaker 4: grasp of the sport and you know, find.
- 7:07Speaker 3: The real love for it.
- 7:08Speaker 4: And as coaches, we speak between ourselves and we kind
- 7:12Speaker 4: of say it's a bit of a dying sport without
- 7:14Speaker 4: the coaches.
- 7:14Speaker 3: So yeah, it's important to keep it going.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Right and talk about coaches.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And if you like umpires, I mean, is there a
- 7:22Speaker 1: structure available where someone who is, if you like, coming
- 7:26Speaker 1: to the twilight end of their career, but once it's
- 7:28Speaker 1: stay involved in the game, can they go onto coaching
- 7:31Speaker 1: quite easily or umpiring?
- 7:34Speaker 4: The coaching courses are quite hard to come by, but
- 7:37Speaker 4: you can go through the England Netball website and you
- 7:40Speaker 4: can get notifications for when they come up. So at
- 7:44Speaker 4: the moment, I'm taking my Level one coaching course and
- 7:48Speaker 4: it's about one hundred and sixty pounds, which can you
- 7:50Speaker 4: can fund yourself. You can also do umpiring courses. They're
- 7:55Speaker 4: very reasonably priced on the same website. They're about sixty
- 7:58Speaker 4: pounds and then you pay an additional fee to have
- 8:00Speaker 4: your practical exam.
- 8:02Speaker 3: But it's a really good way.
- 8:04Speaker 4: I find now that I sometimes I'd never thought i'd
- 8:06Speaker 4: say it that I enjoy umpiring more than I do playing. Yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 4: it's you find it kind of renews your love for
- 8:12Speaker 4: netball in a different way.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah, right, So I mean to raise the money, I mean,
- 8:18Speaker 1: do you do the clubs or in England Netball without
- 8:21Speaker 1: any allowances, or I mean do you do a bit
- 8:23Speaker 1: of fundraising or have you got sponsors.
- 8:26Speaker 4: So in particular, we tend to raise the funds ourselves
- 8:31Speaker 4: through tournaments and other means. We might ask for grants
- 8:35Speaker 4: from local businesses. So like this this weekend, we're obviously
- 8:41Speaker 4: doing our tournament and we'll do a raffle, so that
- 8:44Speaker 4: would be an additional way to raise money. We ask
- 8:47Speaker 4: the teams or any businesses that might be able to
- 8:49Speaker 4: donate any raffle prizes.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Right, so you said the magic word of tournament, So
- 8:54Speaker 1: tell us what's coming up, happening, all happening in this Saturday,
- 8:57Speaker 1: I understand, So tell us all about that.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Yep.
- 8:59Speaker 4: So we start around nine point thirty on Saturday, so
- 9:02Speaker 4: you can coming along and watch even if you're interested
- 9:05Speaker 4: in getting back into netball at any point. Finish around
- 9:08Speaker 4: about half three. But it's a super shot and we've
- 9:12Speaker 4: got mixed teams as well, so that means that we've
- 9:15Speaker 4: got up to three men on the teams, which is
- 9:18Speaker 4: going to be good fun. And they can only play
- 9:21Speaker 4: sort of goal shooter, center or goalkeeper. And the super
- 9:25Speaker 4: shot is there's an additional line in the circle which
- 9:29Speaker 4: is further out, and anyone that's the shooter knows that
- 9:31Speaker 4: it's difficult, but if you get a shot from that line,
- 9:34Speaker 4: you can get two points instead of one.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Oh I see, Just so that's changing the rules make
- 9:38Speaker 1: it a little bit tough, especially for the shooters. Yeah,
- 9:40Speaker 1: you've been a shooter and all about are Yeah, yeah,
- 9:43Speaker 1: that's interesting. Actually you touched on Did I hear that right?
- 9:46Speaker 1: You said there's many involved, it's a mixed tournament. But
- 9:50Speaker 1: whose idea was there? Is there a common thing in
- 9:52Speaker 1: sort of tournament netball.
- 9:54Speaker 3: It doesn't happen very often.
- 9:55Speaker 4: I have been a part of tournaments for more so
- 9:57Speaker 4: in Ashford where they have look to include men, and
- 10:01Speaker 4: actually they've gone above and beyond and more dresses before.
- 10:04Speaker 3: I'm not sure they're going to be doing that this Saturday.
- 10:06Speaker 4: But my husband's playing this Saturday for our team and
- 10:10Speaker 4: we've we've put him through his places and he's come
- 10:13Speaker 4: out saying how he's got a new found appreciation for
- 10:17Speaker 4: how hard it is, especially as a center.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Yeah. But yeah, they are playing, and I think it's
- 10:23Speaker 3: going to be good fun.
- 10:24Speaker 1: And the men just are they mainly if you're like
- 10:27Speaker 1: the husbands or boyfriends that have been sort of coursed
- 10:30Speaker 1: into trying it this weeping.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Yeah, pretty much.
- 10:34Speaker 4: And I mean I've we've done a few practices and
- 10:38Speaker 4: a few of the husbands have actually been very good,
- 10:41Speaker 4: and I think they're quite sporty. And my husband, I
- 10:44Speaker 4: felt like I had to drag him to come to it.
- 10:46Speaker 4: He was sort of moaning and growing him. But by
- 10:48Speaker 4: the end he said, I didn't actually want.
- 10:50Speaker 3: To come off the court.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Oh really, so yeah, and he comes along regularly to
- 10:53Speaker 4: support me on our game side.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Excellent. That's a great idea.
- 10:56Speaker 1: So all right, I've got a little quote here that says,
- 11:00Speaker 1: back to nipple it's something that I wondered if you're
- 11:05Speaker 1: nipplele a good thought about about sort of coaching for
- 11:09Speaker 1: people that might want to come back into the game.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Yeah, so back to netbe is something that we have
- 11:14Speaker 4: actually run before as a league on mainly some days,
- 11:18Speaker 4: I think it was previously. It doesn't happen at the
- 11:22Speaker 4: moment now, but I myself, as I've mentioned, I'm doing coaching,
- 11:26Speaker 4: so it's something that I would like to look at
- 11:29Speaker 4: doing in the future for those people. And that's sort
- 11:32Speaker 4: of people that want to have not played Debel for
- 11:35Speaker 4: a long time. I just want to get out and
- 11:37Speaker 4: get a bit of fitness. I myself do netbele for
- 11:40Speaker 4: my mental health. So you know, you come along and
- 11:43Speaker 4: meet new people. Obviously, if you want to find out
- 11:45Speaker 4: more about that or express an interest, that would be
- 11:47Speaker 4: really good.
- 11:48Speaker 3: So we would ask that you contact us for our
- 11:50Speaker 3: Facebook page.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 11:51Speaker 1: So okay, I think we've covered most things Daniel, is
- 11:54Speaker 1: there anything else.
- 11:55Speaker 2: You think we've forgotten?
- 11:56Speaker 1: I don't want you to go away and think, oh
- 11:57Speaker 1: I should have said that, you know, I think we've
- 11:59Speaker 1: covered most of it.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think it's good to sort of
- 12:03Speaker 4: spread the word about as many leagues as possible. Obviously
- 12:06Speaker 4: I've mentioned Ashford quite a bit. That's in Stanop. We've
- 12:10Speaker 4: also got Dover, the Dover Netball League, which is currently
- 12:15Speaker 4: being held at So the summer season starts again mid
- 12:20Speaker 4: May and it's been held at the St.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Edmund's Catholic School in Dover.
- 12:25Speaker 4: The team players is already filled for this season, but
- 12:27Speaker 4: we do look for floaters regularly, and there is an
- 12:30Speaker 4: email address that you can contact, which is Dover Netball
- 12:34Speaker 4: League at gmail dot com and that's the register as
- 12:37Speaker 4: a floater for the season.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Okay, so before we go any further, can you just
- 12:41Speaker 1: explain what a floater is.
- 12:43Speaker 4: So, a floater is someone that comes along with no
- 12:45Speaker 4: commitment to any specific team. You can come along and
- 12:49Speaker 4: you play for teams that might need the positions. They'll
- 12:52Speaker 4: post on sort of a WhatsApp group or Facebook to
- 12:55Speaker 4: say what players they need for that particular.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Week, and you just come along meet new people, play
- 13:00Speaker 3: with no pressure.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Really okay, excellent? So right, well, I mean it is
- 13:05Speaker 2: before we go. Then is there any hallos or any
- 13:08Speaker 2: thank yous you want to add?
- 13:09Speaker 1: Someone might be listening and thinking, oh I know that, lady.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Just thank you to all the committee, especially for this
- 13:16Speaker 4: weekend in the tournament. It's been you know, I don't
- 13:19Speaker 4: think sometimes it's appreciated how much work goes on behind
- 13:21Speaker 4: closed doors. So Natalie and Ashley for putting together all
- 13:26Speaker 4: the events, anyone that's going to be helping on the day,
- 13:29Speaker 4: and as well she's always here helping.
- 13:31Speaker 3: So yeah, everyone really excellent.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Okay, So Daniel, thanks, So let's just wrap it up now.
- 13:38Speaker 1: So let's just say again how can people get in
- 13:41Speaker 1: touch with the Netball League?
- 13:42Speaker 2: Or do that first? How can people get in touch?
- 13:46Speaker 4: So you can contact us through the folks to Netball
- 13:49Speaker 4: League Facebook, So if you.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Just type into the search bar folks to.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Netball League, it will come up and you can message
- 13:56Speaker 4: us on there if you want to join or just
- 13:58Speaker 4: be a bit nosy about what's going on and you'll
- 14:00Speaker 4: see my name on there, so you can always message me.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Right, And the last thing then has remind us where
- 14:06Speaker 1: and when this is the tournament is I just want
- 14:08Speaker 1: to make the point that it is booked up. I
- 14:11Speaker 1: don't understand, but you'd welcome people to come along and
- 14:14Speaker 1: watch them, perhaps make a few inquiries if they're interested.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Absolutely, So it's been held at the Three Hills in
- 14:19Speaker 4: Focuston and again it starts at nine o'clock in the
- 14:22Speaker 4: morning and goes on throughout the day until about three o'clock.
- 14:26Speaker 3: But yeah, come along.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Most of us are all friendly, so you can just
- 14:29Speaker 4: come and speak to any one of us if you're interested.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Right, excellent, Daniel. I'll tell you what. Thanks for taking
- 14:34Speaker 2: the time today.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Is I've learned a lot more about network just by
- 14:38Speaker 1: talking to you. And you know, I think i'll come along.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I want to see these men in accent.
- 14:43Speaker 3: It will be a good laugh.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, Daniel, thanks very much. So there you go.
- 14:47Speaker 1: There was me and Daniel levin a chat and if
- 14:49Speaker 1: you could do the tractors in the background, they were
- 14:51Speaker 1: just dying to cut the grass, I think it was.
- 14:53Speaker 1: But that was a great interviewer and it's nice to
- 14:55Speaker 1: promote a sport that, if you like, it doesn't get
- 14:57Speaker 1: a lot of coverage. They got too fantastic courts down
- 15:01Speaker 1: at the Three Hills, and if you remember a couple
- 15:03Speaker 1: of years ago, they were totally renovated, spend a lot
- 15:05Speaker 1: of money on them and they are now reaping the benefits.
- 15:09Speaker 1: And it's good to hear that daniel was coaching and
- 15:11Speaker 1: looking after some youngsters coming through so that the sport,
- 15:15Speaker 1: you know, just continues to flourish. Do you know what
- 15:17Speaker 1: it's not on the Olympic sport? Can you think you
- 15:20Speaker 1: know that some of the random sports that are in
- 15:22Speaker 1: the Olympics now, you know, break dancing and I don't know,
- 15:26Speaker 1: there's other things, but netball's been around a long time,
- 15:28Speaker 1: and it's such a shame that it's not made the
- 15:31Speaker 1: Olympics because Olympics just promotes sport throughout the world. And
- 15:36Speaker 1: I think if he was shown on the telly at
- 15:39Speaker 1: a world class level that I'm sure a lot of
- 15:41Speaker 1: youngsters would want to jump on the bandwagon and join in.
- 15:44Speaker 1: So good luck to you, Danielle. And as I said,
- 15:46Speaker 1: I shall try and pop down on Saturday and have
- 15:49Speaker 1: a look at these many dresses. Okay, a bit of
- 15:51Speaker 1: music time now, So about this one. This is a belter.
- 15:54Speaker 1: This is Broon Jovi, and it's my life.
- 16:04Speaker 2: I've seen a song for the brook In Hide.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Well, I need to call me out there as though
- 16:17Speaker 1: I didn't bring you stop that suddenly, but bon Jovi
- 16:20Speaker 1: there and it's my life. And I'll tell you what
- 16:22Speaker 1: I say this every time go on to YouTube, put
- 16:24Speaker 1: bon Jovi flash Mob in there, and there's a couple
- 16:28Speaker 1: of clips of this. I thought, I don't know if
- 16:30Speaker 1: it s in Russia or Czechoslovakia. There's about one hundred
- 16:33Speaker 1: musicians all belting out this song all at the same time.
- 16:36Speaker 1: It's like, you know, fifty guitarist, fifty drummers, a couple
- 16:40Speaker 1: of hundred vocalists.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Is and turn it up loud.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Okay, so let's go do a bit sport now, bous right,
- 16:49Speaker 1: Well if you start with football, well, a new era
- 16:52Speaker 1: for jay Sauders at Folks in the Victor didn't start
- 16:54Speaker 1: too well at all as they lost a home to bottom.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Of the table.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Are all already relegated bousand PITSI by two goals, Daniel.
- 17:02Speaker 1: If anything, this result showed the manager just what he's
- 17:05Speaker 1: up against their going forward on to next season. So
- 17:08Speaker 1: more from this on Saturday with eighty dwalks between ten
- 17:11Speaker 1: and eleven right here on Radio Focus. Then he was
- 17:13Speaker 1: at the game and he will give us his inside information.
- 17:18Speaker 1: The next game is tomorrow, actually good Friday, away to
- 17:21Speaker 1: biller Ricky who are second in the table, just behind
- 17:24Speaker 1: Dartford and it really is getting close up there. Then
- 17:26Speaker 1: on Easter Monday it's a home match against Lewis. Now
- 17:31Speaker 1: last Saturday I've lost three one away to broad Bridge
- 17:34Speaker 1: Heath and tomorrow with a one pm kickoff, have a
- 17:37Speaker 1: massive task now as we know, I have already relegated. However,
- 17:41Speaker 1: they face Ramsgate at the Riachfields and if Ramsgate win,
- 17:45Speaker 1: it means they've won the league and gained promotion to
- 17:47Speaker 1: the Ishmian Premier Division. And I'll tell you what, they do,
- 17:51Speaker 1: get a good following, and I reckon there'd be two
- 17:54Speaker 1: or three coaches coming over from Ramsgate, So I mean,
- 17:56Speaker 1: it wouldn't surprise me if there's six or seven hundred
- 17:59Speaker 1: people there, and I'm sure there'll be a few neutrals
- 18:02Speaker 1: as well that want to.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Just go along and see the outcome.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Anyway, news from the hythe camp is that the manager
- 18:09Speaker 1: of the seas of this season, and Nick Davis, has
- 18:12Speaker 1: left the ground by a mutual consent and a former
- 18:17Speaker 1: guest of the show, Martin Chandler, is taken over. He's
- 18:21Speaker 1: going to manage. They've got three games left and what
- 18:24Speaker 1: a task he's got. He's got He's got to face
- 18:27Speaker 1: Ramsgate on Friday and then on a Monday, Easter Monday,
- 18:32Speaker 1: they have a local derby up the twenty against Ashford United.
- 18:36Speaker 2: So good luck to your network, Martin.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Now in the NRG Kent County Premier League, New Romney
- 18:42Speaker 1: beat Metro Gas four three, keeping them top, and Hawkings
- 18:46Speaker 1: beat Gurananak by five goals to one, pushing them up
- 18:49Speaker 1: to fourth place. Well, it's the long awaited derby match
- 18:52Speaker 1: between New Romney and Hawkings on Tuesday evening's played at Selinge,
- 18:57Speaker 1: which New Romney won five neh, I didn't think it
- 18:59Speaker 1: would be I thought it might be a bit closer
- 19:01Speaker 1: than that.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Now.
- 19:02Speaker 1: The goals were shared out between Josh Hastings, James Everett,
- 19:06Speaker 1: Dan Binder, Billy Somerville and Ethan Page, with Man of
- 19:09Speaker 1: the match going to Harry Carr. On Saturday, Hawkins you're
- 19:13Speaker 1: at home to second for bottom Borden Village and New
- 19:16Speaker 1: Romney are also at home again, this time against the
- 19:19Speaker 1: fleet Down United who are in sixth place.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Now the folks in the Victor Ladies.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Team, they traveled away to play Sitting Born at the
- 19:26Speaker 1: weekend in the Divisional Cup semi final and they beat
- 19:29Speaker 1: them six to nil and they now faced that this
- 19:32Speaker 1: is interesting. Actually it should be a good fixture to
- 19:33Speaker 1: go along and watch. They now face a Lid Ladies
- 19:36Speaker 1: in the final at Mayston's Gallaha Stadium on Thursday the
- 19:40Speaker 1: fifteenth and May with a seven thirty kickoff. So, folks
- 19:44Speaker 1: in the Victor Ladies they've won the league, can they
- 19:46Speaker 1: actually do the double? Well, we're keeping eye on that,
- 19:49Speaker 1: that's for sure. And where as soon as we find
- 19:51Speaker 1: out the score and we will let you know. But
- 19:55Speaker 1: it's been a really good first season for the Ladies
- 19:58Speaker 1: and we did have the two coaching staff come in
- 20:01Speaker 1: early on in the year and I think, you know what,
- 20:04Speaker 1: I think we might get them back in. Just give
- 20:06Speaker 1: us a rundown of how the season went. Okay, we've
- 20:09Speaker 1: got a track now from nineteen ninety eight. This is
- 20:11Speaker 1: a new Radicals and you give what you give. Paul
- 20:45Speaker 1: a cold there. Oh, I love this song. I haven't
- 20:53Speaker 1: heard it for a while nineteen ninety six and you
- 20:58Speaker 1: know what, I was listening really close lead to the
- 21:00Speaker 1: lyrics of that song has got some great lyrics, and
- 21:02Speaker 1: I'm not sure about these ones. It says, I'll watch
- 21:05Speaker 1: all the children, you pay all the bills. Well, I
- 21:09Speaker 1: do like that bit, but I do like the next bit.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I'll go wash the dishes, you go grab a beer. Yeah,
- 21:16Speaker 1: that is a great line. Whoever thought that out you
- 21:19Speaker 1: got my vote, I'll tell you right. A bit of
- 21:21Speaker 1: a hockey news now, well it's junior hockey to be precise,
- 21:25Speaker 1: because at the weekend, two Junior Optimist teams that made
- 21:29Speaker 1: the trip to Nottingham Hockey Center to play in the
- 21:32Speaker 1: national finals. The under fourteen boys beat Calser Leamington two
- 21:36Speaker 1: to one in a close game. The Ops went one
- 21:39Speaker 1: in up but CULSA equalized. However, in the second half
- 21:42Speaker 1: the Ops hit the net once more. Final score two
- 21:46Speaker 1: to one to the Optimists, thus regaining the trophy for
- 21:48Speaker 1: the second year running. Now for seven of the boys,
- 21:51Speaker 1: it was their second and national final medal. As they
- 21:55Speaker 1: move these boys now, they were thirteen last year and
- 21:58Speaker 1: they won a medal. They're fourteen, so the next jump
- 22:02Speaker 1: up is there'll be the youngest. There'd be sort of
- 22:05Speaker 1: fourteen fifteen year olds in the under sixteen teams, but
- 22:09Speaker 1: what an experience of that aga two national finals. Now
- 22:12Speaker 1: the girls under eighteen teams. Unfortunately we're beaten three to
- 22:16Speaker 1: one in their game against Old Georgians despite being one
- 22:19Speaker 1: let up their downfaward, conceding three short corners from which
- 22:23Speaker 1: the Old Georgians scored three times. But let's put this
- 22:27Speaker 1: in perspective. This is two ops junior teams in the
- 22:30Speaker 1: finals of a national, not a regional, a national cup,
- 22:34Speaker 1: producing one winner for the second time and one runner up.
- 22:38Speaker 1: So this just shows you how far the sport of
- 22:40Speaker 1: hockey has progressed in our hometown of Folks Then over
- 22:43Speaker 1: the years, and how good the future is looking. So
- 22:46Speaker 1: a massive well done to the players, spectators, coaches and
- 22:50Speaker 1: everybody involved who'd done the club and the town proud.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Well done.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Okay, so we've got to be a wheelchair basketball news.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Well this is really exciting, this is really hot in
- 23:00Speaker 1: this league. The Folks On Arrow's wheelchair basketball season is
- 23:03Speaker 1: heading for an exciting end. As we said, the Arrows
- 23:07Speaker 1: have two games left, both away this Saturday against the
- 23:10Speaker 1: London Titans and the last game in a way trip
- 23:13Speaker 1: to Chichester to face the Southern Sharks. The league tables
- 23:17Speaker 1: ahead of this weekend's games read as follows. The Arrows
- 23:20Speaker 1: are top they've played ten, they've got twenty points, and
- 23:24Speaker 1: the Sharks are second. They've played ten, they've got eighteen points,
- 23:28Speaker 1: and both teams are playing this Saturday.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Now.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I won't go into all the permutations because in this
- 23:34Speaker 1: league's two points for a wing, but you still get
- 23:36Speaker 1: a point if you lose, so it could all be
- 23:38Speaker 1: down to the last game of the season when the
- 23:41Speaker 1: Arrows play the Sharks. So come on, New Arrows, you
- 23:45Speaker 1: can do it. And it was so good to have
- 23:47Speaker 1: Ben and Becky Potter and from the Arrows in the
- 23:49Speaker 1: studio recently. They explained so much about the game of
- 23:52Speaker 1: wheelchair basketball, and I've been following the progress for a
- 23:54Speaker 1: couple of seasons now and it really is exciting. Okay,
- 23:58Speaker 1: telling more music now. This is Charles and Eddie from
- 24:01Speaker 1: nineteen ninety two. Would a Lie to You Baby? Charles
- 24:21Speaker 1: and Eddie would a Lie to You?
- 24:28Speaker 2: Oh tell you God.
- 24:28Speaker 1: They've got some great tracks in the playlist today. I'm
- 24:30Speaker 1: loving this hour, okay, but we've still got a lot
- 24:32Speaker 1: to get through, so it's time for some running news now.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Last Sunday I was on the mic at the Kent
- 24:38Speaker 1: Spring Half and four marathon organized by Nice Work and Supporting.
- 24:42Speaker 1: They were raising money for the Ashford and Tentedon Samaritans.
- 24:46Speaker 1: There were one hundred and seventy eight in the marathon
- 24:48Speaker 1: and four hundred and thirty five in the half, making
- 24:51Speaker 1: a total of six hundred and thirteen runners. The first
- 24:54Speaker 1: running home in the marathon was a Nazredine Harun from
- 24:57Speaker 1: the Folks and Running and Athletics Club and he was
- 24:59Speaker 1: a minutes clear of the second place runner, also from
- 25:03Speaker 1: the Folkston Club. Well in the Fall marathon we had
- 25:06Speaker 1: Adam Ward, Matt Harris and Jordan Bray and Martin Salmon
- 25:10Speaker 1: and j So o'collen. Jace O'Callahan Sorry Jays successfully completed
- 25:15Speaker 1: the half.
- 25:16Speaker 2: From South Kent Harriers.
- 25:18Speaker 1: It was girl power time as Marie Watson crossed the
- 25:21Speaker 1: line in the marathon winning her Female Vett fifty five
- 25:24Speaker 1: age category and in the half Margaret Connolly won the
- 25:27Speaker 1: Female Vett sixty five age group.
- 25:30Speaker 2: So well done, ladies.
- 25:32Speaker 1: So folks and runners were out and about recently, well
- 25:35Speaker 1: they've been everywhere. In the Paris Marathon, Ben McGhee, Carrie
- 25:40Speaker 1: Thomas and Beth Ferno all got PBS and a special
- 25:44Speaker 1: mention goes to Carrie who knocked a whop in thirty
- 25:47Speaker 1: minutes of her previous PB time. Barefoot runner, Yes you
- 25:51Speaker 1: heard that right, Barefoot runner Darren Philpott completed the Hilly
- 25:55Speaker 1: I Beetha Marathon. Meanwhile, a bit closer to home in
- 25:58Speaker 1: Newport in Wales, Darren Crewe and Gary Brazier run a
- 26:02Speaker 1: half marathon, whilst Jenny Heathfield run the full twenty six
- 26:05Speaker 1: point two, joined by Marie Brazier and Vicky Scott, who
- 26:08Speaker 1: both managed to peebe times. At the Canterbury Riverside ten
- 26:12Speaker 1: k Carla Lander and Harry Wall had good runs but
- 26:16Speaker 1: as we'd mentioned before last week, up and coming guy
- 26:19Speaker 1: Slingsby took part in his first senior race as it
- 26:23Speaker 1: was his fifteenth birthday. Once you fourteen, sorry, once you
- 26:27Speaker 1: hit fifteen. When he was fourteen he had to stop
- 26:29Speaker 1: actually running the Folkston Redna Park Junior Park Run and
- 26:33Speaker 1: so he's now classed as a senior. He finished first
- 26:36Speaker 1: in his age category and eighth overall, so watch out
- 26:39Speaker 1: in the future for this talented athlete. Remember the name
- 26:43Speaker 1: guy Slingsby. Meanwhile, in lanzar Rossi, former guest of the
- 26:47Speaker 1: show Louisa Id She found a charity five k evn,
- 26:51Speaker 1: finishing second lady and sixth overall, and local runners found
- 26:56Speaker 1: park runs at the following venues. Madina in the Iowa,
- 27:00Speaker 1: It's great Lines in Medway, Keswick in Cumbria, Upfield and
- 27:04Speaker 1: East Sussex, Yarborough in Lincolnshire and in Kent, the usual
- 27:09Speaker 1: suspects of Ashford, Canterbury, which to Bulldover and of course Folkston.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Now tomorrow I'm on the mike. It's good Friday and
- 27:16Speaker 1: it's the forty first stage in of the Folkston ten Now.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Unfortunately this race is sold out as entries are closed,
- 27:23Speaker 1: so there's no entries on the day either, but please
- 27:25Speaker 1: go along and watch. It's going to be a nice day.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Actually it starts at ten o'clock at the Hive Green,
- 27:31Speaker 1: but you can follow the race along the seafront promenade
- 27:34Speaker 1: all the way from Hive to Folkstone and back. The
- 27:37Speaker 1: weather looks good is tomorrow is twelve degrees sunny and
- 27:40Speaker 1: a gentle breeze which is nice for the runners. In fact,
- 27:43Speaker 1: it looks good tomorrow Saturday and Sunday, but a bit
- 27:46Speaker 1: showery on Monday.
- 27:48Speaker 2: So that's not too bad is it? For an easter?
- 27:50Speaker 2: Sometimes it's freezing in it? Okay?
- 27:53Speaker 1: But music now Scout for Girls Famous from nineteen it's
- 27:57Speaker 1: not up there, but it's from nineteen ninety something.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Simply read and Sunriots. Okay.
- 28:21Speaker 1: So we've got a bit of a guest update for you. Well,
- 28:25Speaker 1: I'm doing this now because in a couple of weeks time,
- 28:28Speaker 1: I'm flying off somewhere nice and sunny for three weeks.
- 28:31Speaker 1: So I'm trying to cram as much in as i
- 28:33Speaker 1: can on the shows now. Next Thursday we will be
- 28:36Speaker 1: joined by Sarah Green from the Sports Trust. And Sarah
- 28:39Speaker 1: has been on the show several times.
- 28:41Speaker 2: She's great.
- 28:42Speaker 1: She does a lot of work and she's actively involved
- 28:45Speaker 1: in all the schools in shepwey the aising with the
- 28:47Speaker 1: teachers and offering ideas for sport within the school. She
- 28:50Speaker 1: goes into school, she's got some ideas. She was great
- 28:53Speaker 1: during COVID, got the kids doing all sorts of exercises
- 28:56Speaker 1: and really looking forward to catching up with Sarah next.
- 29:01Speaker 1: But on Saturday, the twenty sixth, it's a massive morning
- 29:03Speaker 1: of sport here on Radio Folkston between ten and eleven
- 29:06Speaker 1: we've got Ady Dawk's show. We'll be joined by a
- 29:10Speaker 1: young lady called Ellis Stewart. Now Elis was one of
- 29:13Speaker 1: my guests last year talking about her very first ever
- 29:16Speaker 1: marathon in London. Well, she's recently completed the London Landmarks half,
- 29:21Speaker 1: so she's going to come in and tell us about that.
- 29:24Speaker 2: But she has.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Another string to her boat. She's currently studying a university
- 29:29Speaker 1: I'm not sure which won the university in Canterbury as
- 29:32Speaker 1: a physiotherapist and she's a place and she's got a
- 29:34Speaker 1: placement at Whitstable Town Football Club and she will be
- 29:38Speaker 1: joining Whitstable Town as part of the team when they
- 29:42Speaker 1: play at Wembley Stadium in the final of the FA
- 29:45Speaker 1: VARs on Sunday May the eleventh. Now, if you didn't
- 29:48Speaker 1: know that whitstaball have gone all the way through to
- 29:52Speaker 1: Wembley to the pinnacle of football in this country. It's
- 29:56Speaker 1: a competition called the FA VARs. There's also a game
- 29:59Speaker 1: on the same day at Wembley Stadium called the FA Trophy.
- 30:02Speaker 1: And in fact she will have a link there with
- 30:05Speaker 1: Addwks because Ad and Charlie from Seasiders Radio are hoping
- 30:09Speaker 1: to get up to Wembley for the second year running
- 30:12Speaker 1: and to commentate on both the games and so we
- 30:16Speaker 1: can hear them back here in Folkston. So really looking
- 30:19Speaker 1: forward to that one. That would be really interesting morning.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Then between eleven and one we're still talking about Saturday,
- 30:25Speaker 1: the twenty six I should be conducting a two hour
- 30:28Speaker 1: London Marathon special. I hope to play out three interviews
- 30:31Speaker 1: from three runners who've never run a marathon before. Their
- 30:35Speaker 1: first marathon is going to be London and they're raising
- 30:38Speaker 1: money for a charity. Now, the three in question a
- 30:41Speaker 1: Curly Morgan who's running for Asthma and Lung uk Den
- 30:45Speaker 1: Kelly is running for Royal British Legion and Ellie Curran
- 30:49Speaker 1: is running for Young Lives Versus Cancer. So you can
- 30:52Speaker 1: see what a cracking couple of hours that's going to be.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Also in the show, I hope to have two possibly
- 30:57Speaker 1: three experienced marathon runners who'll be sharing their stories, what
- 31:02Speaker 1: it's like to run the first marathon and do they
- 31:04Speaker 1: get any easier and just I mean, I'm hoping these
- 31:08Speaker 1: guests can make it. I won't say the name is
- 31:09Speaker 1: Just yet I've got to confirm, but they've run marathons
- 31:13Speaker 1: all over Europe, you know, and so it's got a
- 31:16Speaker 1: wealth of experience.
- 31:17Speaker 2: So I'm looking forward to that one. And so there
- 31:20Speaker 2: we go.
- 31:20Speaker 1: So we'll have basically on Saturday, the twenty sixth, we
- 31:23Speaker 1: will have three hours of sport, highlighting local athletes. Now,
- 31:28Speaker 1: the last song I think is going to be the
- 31:29Speaker 1: last song. I'm not quite sure are the way is going?
- 31:32Speaker 1: But this is another Beach Boys song. Start with the
- 31:34Speaker 1: Beach Boys. In with the Beach Boys. As it is summer,
- 31:37Speaker 1: the sun's out. So ever, listens to this one. When
- 31:40Speaker 1: was the last time you heard this? Surfing USA?
- 31:44Speaker 5: If everybody had enough across the USA, then everybody be.
- 31:51Speaker 3: Sir, like California.
- 31:56Speaker 6: You think we're in their bad those.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Two bushy bushy.
