Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard, to dig
- 0:41Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:44Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:48Speaker 1: we're talking about this week's full episode subject Kendrick Lamar,
- 0:52Speaker 1: and we're rewinding back to our Grand Parsons episode, previewing
- 0:55Speaker 1: our upcoming story on Brian Wilson, and we get into
- 0:58Speaker 1: your voicemails, tech dms, and as always a whole lot
- 1:02Speaker 1: of rosie. This is the podcast for the musically obsessed.
- 1:05Speaker 1: The outsider is the independent thinkers who know that the
- 1:08Speaker 1: best history is the history that gets buried. Disgraceland is
- 1:11Speaker 1: where I tell the stories they didn't want told, the
- 1:13Speaker 1: kind you'll end up telling someone else. All Right, this goes,
- 1:17Speaker 1: Let's get into it. Compton, the setting for this week's
- 1:33Speaker 1: full episode of Disgraceland on Kendrick Lamar, located south of
- 1:38Speaker 1: downtown LA Is regarded by its residents as a tight
- 1:42Speaker 1: knit community, but for music fans Compton Compton gives an
- 1:46Speaker 1: outsized impression, one that I would say is actually mythic.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And that's because Compton, from the nineteen eighties on has
- 1:55Speaker 1: given us some of the most exciting music and culture
- 2:00Speaker 1: up NWA's Straight Out of Compton was a view into
- 2:03Speaker 1: a world that captivated those of us who were out
- 2:06Speaker 1: in the middle of nowhere America. Drugs, beatdowns, crooked cops,
- 2:11Speaker 1: drive by shootings, What the hell was this place? Now?
- 2:16Speaker 1: I'm certain that as a kid, the first time I
- 2:18Speaker 1: even heard the name Compton it was on that record,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and I'm pretty sure it was like that for a
- 2:25Speaker 1: lot of people at my age who weren't from Los Angeles. Now,
- 2:28Speaker 1: imagine being born into that world as Kendrick Lamar was,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and taking all of that influence as your birthright and
- 2:38Speaker 1: using it to turn yourself into one of the biggest
- 2:40Speaker 1: and most influential modern musical artists on the planet. It's
- 2:44Speaker 1: pretty impressive, and no other modern musician has taken Compton
- 2:49Speaker 1: as far as Kendrick Lamar has I said, modern musicians,
- 2:53Speaker 1: so slow your role. I know you're gonna come at
- 2:55Speaker 1: me with your NWA Doctor Dre ice Cube takes. But
- 2:58Speaker 1: again I said, modern modern muse position. What Doctor Dre
- 3:01Speaker 1: did in the nineties was incredible, super impressive. Yes, groundbreaking, sure,
- 3:06Speaker 1: but that was then and this is now. But you know,
- 3:10Speaker 1: for people like me, and I suspect people like you,
- 3:13Speaker 1: that history is more interesting. So let's look at what
- 3:18Speaker 1: Compton and the greater self central region of Los Angeles
- 3:21Speaker 1: has given us for great music, shall we. I already
- 3:25Speaker 1: mentioned the shot heard around the world, NWA's Straight Out
- 3:28Speaker 1: of Compton from nineteen eighty eight. It's indisputably one of
- 3:33Speaker 1: the greatest hip hop albums ever, certainly one of the
- 3:37Speaker 1: most consequential, and it's book ended on the front side
- 3:41Speaker 1: by Easy Ease nineteen eighty seven single Easy Does It
- 3:44Speaker 1: and on the backside by Doctor Dre's solo debut The Chronic,
- 3:48Speaker 1: which comes a little bit later in nineteen ninety two.
- 3:51Speaker 1: A great record that is also born of this world
- 3:54Speaker 1: that doesn't get enough mentioned in my view, is Easy
- 3:58Speaker 1: and Dre's bandmate Ice Cube in his sophomore effort, The Predator,
- 4:03Speaker 1: also from nineteen ninety two. Now rewind back before Easy
- 4:08Speaker 1: and to Seth Central Los Angeles, not Compton exactly, but
- 4:12Speaker 1: pretty much the same neighborhood, same area of LA and
- 4:15Speaker 1: we get ice T's nineteen eighty seven debut, Rhyme Pays
- 4:20Speaker 1: with its gangster rap genre defining track six in the Morning.
- 4:25Speaker 1: All four of these records, Rhyme Pays by ice T,
- 4:28Speaker 1: Easy's so first solo album straight out of Compton, Doctor
- 4:34Speaker 1: Dre's Chronic The Predator by Ice Cube. That's five records. Actually,
- 4:38Speaker 1: all five of these records. They stand up to the
- 4:41Speaker 1: scrutiny of time. Nearly forty years later. Kendrick Lamar was
- 4:46Speaker 1: in diapers when this music was released, and his second
- 4:49Speaker 1: album twenty fifteen's To Pimp a Butterfly It deserves to
- 4:52Speaker 1: be on this list, as does kendricks fall in contemporary
- 4:56Speaker 1: Nipsey Hustles, Mailbox Money. These albums more than their great
- 5:01Speaker 1: music and influence on culture. To me anyway, they're mile
- 5:06Speaker 1: markers that point us toward just some of the wildest
- 5:10Speaker 1: true crime stories from music history. It's crazy. The murder
- 5:16Speaker 1: of Nipsey Hustle, the survival of Kendrick Lamar, the true
- 5:20Speaker 1: story behind Ice T's actual life of crime that no
- 5:23Speaker 1: one seems to really talk about except me. I don't
- 5:26Speaker 1: know why. And then, of course the strange death of
- 5:29Speaker 1: Easy Easy. Eas official cause of death was from HIV AIDS. However,
- 5:36Speaker 1: in twenty fifteen, his son Young Easy claimed that his
- 5:41Speaker 1: father Eric Wright ak Easy got sick after an incident
- 5:47Speaker 1: with Suge Knight in the recording studio, which okay, And
- 5:51Speaker 1: then there are these comments from Suge Knight on Jimmy
- 5:55Speaker 1: Kimmel Live from two thousand and three.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I'll come check you out right. Why do prove this?
- 6:02Speaker 3: Oh it's not Oh no, that's just because.
- 6:06Speaker 2: While this is a new thing, right, See, if somebody
- 6:11Speaker 2: gonna do somebody. See technology is so high, right right,
- 6:15Speaker 2: So if you shoot somebody, you go to Jill Fever.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So the kids, you don't want to go to Joe Fever.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:20Speaker 2: So they got this new thing out that people sell
- 6:22Speaker 2: them all the time. They got this stuff to call.
- 6:24Speaker 2: They get blood from somebody with.
- 6:26Speaker 1: AIDS, Yeah, they shoot you with it.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Oh that's death Easy there, you know what I mean?
- 6:33Speaker 1: Yeah? Wait, a light in the moon in the exclusive
- 6:39Speaker 1: section of this episode that's coming up is that and
- 6:42Speaker 1: I are going to dive into the merits behind whatever
- 6:46Speaker 1: the fuck it is that sug Knight is talking about
- 6:50Speaker 1: here and Young Easy's claim that sug Knight had his
- 6:55Speaker 1: father killed via this horrific method that Shulg himself is
- 7:01Speaker 1: describing on national television. Now, I've heard these rumors before.
- 7:08Speaker 1: They came up briefly in the Easy episode that we did.
- 7:12Speaker 1: It's something that I've never fully wanted to dive into
- 7:16Speaker 1: until now because I just I got comped in on
- 7:18Speaker 1: my brain. So we're gonna dig into this. Like I
- 7:20Speaker 1: said in the exclusive section of this after party, me
- 7:22Speaker 1: and Zath, we're gonna bring it to you. We're gonna
- 7:25Speaker 1: talk about whether or not we think there's enough here
- 7:26Speaker 1: for to warrant its own episode of Disgraceland. But you know,
- 7:31Speaker 1: if it is or if it isn't, you're gonna get
- 7:33Speaker 1: more information and to hear it though. You're gonna become

- 8:08Speaker 1: back in just a minute with your voicemails, texts, dms
- 8:11Speaker 1: and more. All right, all right, all right, we are
- 8:38Speaker 1: back speaking of all right, all right, all right. Has
- 8:40Speaker 1: anybody read Matthew McConaughey's book. I have not heard. It's great.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I heard it's really inspiring, and I want to read it.
- 8:47Speaker 1: New True Detective note news as well. Nick Cage supposedly involved.
- 8:52Speaker 1: All right, getting way off track. Listen this week True
- 8:55Speaker 1: Detective Aside, Matthew McConaughey aside. All right, all right, all right,
- 9:01Speaker 1: Kendrick Lamar in your feed right now. Check that story
- 9:04Speaker 1: out if you have not heard it. Coming up next
- 9:06Speaker 1: in the feed, we are rewinding to Gram Parsons, Our
- 9:10Speaker 1: Gram Parsons story. I put my heart and my soul
- 9:13Speaker 1: into everything I write for you guys. But it's hard
- 9:17Speaker 1: for me to think of another episode where I lay
- 9:22Speaker 1: bear my own emotions as heavily as I did in
- 9:28Speaker 1: this Graham Parsons episode and Graham's I sort of use
- 9:32Speaker 1: Grams dealings with grief as a proxy for my own
- 9:36Speaker 1: at the time and what I was going through. I
- 9:38Speaker 1: remember distinctly writing that episode and just how helpful it
- 9:44Speaker 1: was to have Graham Parsons, the spirit of Gram Parsons
- 9:48Speaker 1: and his music with me during that really really rough summer.
- 9:52Speaker 1: So that is coming out next in our feed. That'll
- 9:55Speaker 1: be hitting up next after this episode, and then we're
- 9:58Speaker 1: doing something a little bit different. We're gonna We're gonna
- 10:01Speaker 1: sneak in Beach Boys Part one Beach Boys Part two
- 10:05Speaker 1: in the coming days after Graham Parsons, because we have
- 10:08Speaker 1: a new episode on Brian Wilson, who you know passed
- 10:11Speaker 1: away a couple of months ago, and I decided, Hey,
- 10:13Speaker 1: I want to do a Brian Wilson episode. So I
- 10:15Speaker 1: got in there. I wrote this Brian Wilson episode. It's
- 10:17Speaker 1: essentially part three of our Beach Boys story. It's a
- 10:21Speaker 1: man Brian Wilson. This was This was tough. This was
- 10:24Speaker 1: a tough one to write because so much has been said, written,
- 10:29Speaker 1: uh put on film about Brian Wilson and Brian Wilson
- 10:34Speaker 1: one of the rare artists who is a couple of things.
- 10:37Speaker 1: His autobiography is incredible, It's really really great. He's totally
- 10:42Speaker 1: hard on the sleeve. He tells his story in a
- 10:45Speaker 1: way that only he can, so that makes it hard
- 10:47Speaker 1: for somebody like me to come in and write, write
- 10:50Speaker 1: the story, or tell a unique story, or come in
- 10:53Speaker 1: with a unique point of view. But then also the
- 10:56Speaker 1: rare thing is Brian Wilson. I'm like most musicians who
- 10:58Speaker 1: have biopics. The bio pick on Brian Wilson's actually really good.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I think anyways, love and Mercy, and that just makes
- 11:05Speaker 1: it again, it makes it difficult when when the stories
- 11:08Speaker 1: that are out there are really good and they cover
- 11:09Speaker 1: a lot of the most interesting stuff and there's not
- 11:12Speaker 1: a lot, a lot, not a lot left in the
- 11:13Speaker 1: cracks for us to mine out, makes it really difficult
- 11:17Speaker 1: to tell these stories in a unique way. But I think,
- 11:21Speaker 1: you know, I think, I hope, I hope we did
- 11:22Speaker 1: a good job. I really kind of leaned into the
- 11:25Speaker 1: spirit of Brian Wilson here and I did not. We
- 11:29Speaker 1: just Zeth and I and the rest of us at
- 11:30Speaker 1: Double eleve Us. We didn't intend to have the Kendrick
- 11:33Speaker 1: episode and the Brian Wilson episode hanging on the same theme.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Zeth wrote the Kendrick episode, I wrote the Brian Wilson one.
- 11:40Speaker 1: But but mercy is part of the thematically, is part
- 11:44Speaker 1: of the same thing here with both episodes, So I
- 11:47Speaker 1: just worked out that way. But whatever doesn't really matter.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I like when we're hanging on a theme, and I
- 11:53Speaker 1: hope you dig this episode that's coming up next Tuesday.
- 11:55Speaker 1: It's our next new episode, just Gray SAand on Brian
- 11:58Speaker 1: Wilson of the Beach Boys. Question of the week for
- 12:02Speaker 1: next week when you're listening to that Brian Wilson episode,
- 12:04Speaker 1: it's going to be which figure for music history is
- 12:07Speaker 1: the best example of a tortured genius. Is it Brian Wilson.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Is it someone like Kurt Cobain or sly Stone who
- 12:15Speaker 1: also recently departed, Marvin Gay, or maybe it's someone new
- 12:19Speaker 1: like young Blood. I don't know. There's a lot of
- 12:20Speaker 1: examples to pull from here, and perhaps to help organize
- 12:23Speaker 1: your thinking, give me recommendations, maybe on subjects that I
- 12:27Speaker 1: haven't covered yet, we haven't covered yet in Disgrace, and
- 12:29Speaker 1: that you might want to hear us cover. Okay, so
- 12:32Speaker 1: when you're listening to Brian Wilson for obvious reasons, the
- 12:35Speaker 1: question is going to be what is the best example
- 12:38Speaker 1: from music history of a tortured genius? Six one seven
- 12:42Speaker 1: nine six six six three eight voicemail and text to
- 12:46Speaker 1: let me know right now? Though you know where I
- 12:48Speaker 1: am at. I am in the phone booth, the one
- 12:50Speaker 1: across the hall. I am hanging on the telephone. We're answering.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Last week's question of the Week spawned from our Kendrick episode,
- 12:56Speaker 1: which artists demonstrated, uh, the greatest act of mercy. Kind
- 13:01Speaker 1: of an esoteric question for us to ask, but I
- 13:03Speaker 1: don't know. We went there and let's check in with
- 13:08Speaker 1: Cynthia in the five.
- 13:10Speaker 4: To one zero, Hey, Jake, Cynthia calling from California. And
- 13:16Speaker 4: musician with the most with mercy was Joan jet I
- 13:21Speaker 4: went to go see her in the late nineties, first
- 13:24Speaker 4: time I ever got to see her. I've been a
- 13:26Speaker 4: fan since I was seven years old, and I had
- 13:30Speaker 4: a full blown panic attack like third song and I
- 13:35Speaker 4: didn't know what was happening. My head was totally spinning out,
- 13:39Speaker 4: and as they were oaking me out because I was
- 13:41Speaker 4: in the very front, I was complaining that I've been
- 13:44Speaker 4: wanting to see her since I was seven. So I
- 13:47Speaker 4: had to spend the rest of the time in the
- 13:48Speaker 4: medic tent, probably about I don't know, thirty minutes. There
- 13:51Speaker 4: was a short set afterwards. A friend of mine had
- 13:55Speaker 4: gotten to some people backstage, and when she was doing
- 13:59Speaker 4: our autograph signing at the end, she had to go
- 14:04Speaker 4: behind the desk where she was and asked if I
- 14:07Speaker 4: wanted to take a picture. I said yes, I was
- 14:10Speaker 4: still kind of groggy it, and you know, she put
- 14:13Speaker 4: her arm around my shoulder and she would just look
- 14:15Speaker 4: at me and she's like, are you okay? And I
- 14:18Speaker 4: said yeah. She gave me a little squeeze on the
- 14:20Speaker 4: arm and then we took the picture and it was
- 14:24Speaker 4: so awesome. She was so cool, just a really cool,
- 14:27Speaker 4: genuine person. So that was my story. I hope that
- 14:32Speaker 4: as well.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Take care, Cynthia. This is an incredible story, and I
- 14:36Speaker 1: thank you for sharing it with us. I love the
- 14:38Speaker 1: personal stories, and I always liked jone Jet, but I've
- 14:42Speaker 1: never met her. I don't know much about her history
- 14:44Speaker 1: other than you know, just the sort of top level
- 14:46Speaker 1: Wikipedia stuff what everybody knows. And it's just it warmed
- 14:50Speaker 1: my heart to hear you tell that story and for
- 14:52Speaker 1: me to learn that Jone Jet is just a great person.
- 14:56Speaker 1: It sounds like super cool. Love it. By the way,
- 15:00Speaker 1: you got a great friend there who went and hooked
- 15:02Speaker 1: that all up where you went backstage, sought out Joan Jet,
- 15:06Speaker 1: got you to connect with her. That's no easy thing
- 15:08Speaker 1: to do. All right, let's check you in with the
- 15:10Speaker 1: seven two four same question here seven two four rights
- 15:14Speaker 1: in hey. As for the topic of next week, it's
- 15:16Speaker 1: hard not to think of the most merciful artist and
- 15:19Speaker 1: not think of the appellation queen herself, Dolly Parton. That
- 15:23Speaker 1: woman through her park, her reading program, helping wildlife, LBGTQ
- 15:28Speaker 1: plus support and more. Make whatever jokes you want about
- 15:32Speaker 1: the woman's chest, but behind is an absolute heart of gold.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I wasn't gonna say anything about Dolly Parton's chest. I've
- 15:42Speaker 1: never said anything about Dolly Parton's chest to you, guys,
- 15:46Speaker 1: or anyone else that I know of. I hear you,
- 15:48Speaker 1: Dolly Parton is the shit. She's amazing and we should
- 15:51Speaker 1: all celebrate Dolly Parton, and she's a great candidate for
- 15:54Speaker 1: incredible acts of mercy for music history. Eight one six
- 15:58Speaker 1: right saying, hey, Jake Chain from the eight one six,
- 16:01Speaker 1: My text is in regards both to artists showing mercy
- 16:05Speaker 1: and first concerts. My son's first concert at age three
- 16:09Speaker 1: was Cross Canadian Ragweed and if you haven't heard of them,
- 16:12Speaker 1: there are music royalty in the Red Dirt Scene. And
- 16:15Speaker 1: not only was the show amazing, when Cody walked out
- 16:17Speaker 1: to start the show, he saw my wife standing there
- 16:19Speaker 1: front row with a baby and a carrier on her chest,
- 16:22Speaker 1: and made the security go get three more barricade fences
- 16:25Speaker 1: and box us in on the remaining three sides, so
- 16:28Speaker 1: we had our own little corral of front row space
- 16:31Speaker 1: so nobody could bump or spilled beer on the baby.
- 16:33Speaker 1: True class acts. Look into CCR and the Red Dirt Scene.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Guys who had the opportunity to blow up but chose
- 16:39Speaker 1: not to sell out love that eight one six. I
- 16:43Speaker 1: will certainly check that out, and I must have made
- 16:46Speaker 1: you guys feel pretty badass, pretty special. Let's hear from
- 16:50Speaker 1: Arman in Calgary.
- 16:52Speaker 5: Hey, this is Armand and the Boy three five eight seven.
- 16:55Speaker 5: I just wanted to find out if you knew about
- 16:58Speaker 5: Lenny appearing on stage with Frankie Goes to Hollywood on
- 17:03Speaker 5: German TV. If you've not seen it, you need to watch.
- 17:06Speaker 2: It once again.
- 17:07Speaker 5: Armand in the four three five h seven, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Love the show. Listen every week faithfully.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Arman from Calgary. This is exactly why I love this gig.
- 17:21Speaker 1: I have never once in my life heard of lem
- 17:24Speaker 1: Me performing with Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and I'm so
- 17:29Speaker 1: happy for it. I'm so excited. I'm going to watch.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I hope everybody else watches, and I hope we come
- 17:34Speaker 1: back next week we talk about it. Six one seven
- 17:36Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight. I want everybody's
- 17:39Speaker 1: take on Lemm Fromoterhead collaborating with Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Okay,
- 17:45Speaker 1: and don't bring up Dolly Parton's chest when you give
- 17:47Speaker 1: me your Lemmy takes regarding Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Okay. Now,
- 17:52Speaker 1: let's do a couple of emails, because I've been neglecting
- 17:55Speaker 1: the emails lately, not on purpose, it just happens. Claire
- 18:00Speaker 1: Bifford or Buyford. I'm not sure how to pronounce her
- 18:02Speaker 1: last name right, saying Hey, greetings from beautiful Cornwall, England.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I'm a longtime listener of Disgrace Sland and Hollywood Land
- 18:10Speaker 1: and loved the interaction between Jake and Zeff and the
- 18:12Speaker 1: new rap parties. She goes on to say, can I
- 18:14Speaker 1: recommend a Western read The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt.
- 18:18Speaker 1: I'm not especially a Western fan, but this book blew
- 18:20Speaker 1: me away. It is set during the gold Rush and
- 18:22Speaker 1: as some of the true life grit that is often
- 18:24Speaker 1: missing from stories and films of that period. Yes, Claire,
- 18:28Speaker 1: this is exactly what I'm looking for. Claire goesana say,
- 18:31Speaker 1: the book has been made into a film with some
- 18:33Speaker 1: big names in it, but I haven't watched it as
- 18:35Speaker 1: it won't match my imagination which was set alive by
- 18:38Speaker 1: the pros. I loved your episode about the Cramps, which
- 18:41Speaker 1: explained how the hell they were on the same bill
- 18:42Speaker 1: as the Police. For my brother and I saw them
- 18:44Speaker 1: at our school's leisure center back in the day. It
- 18:46Speaker 1: was round about the time the Police released their first album,
- 18:49Speaker 1: probably before you were born. My brother Simon followed the
- 18:52Speaker 1: Cramps round a few more of their gigs in the
- 18:53Speaker 1: UK and bumped into Brian Gregory and the bar on
- 18:56Speaker 1: one occasion, and he bumped a cigarette off Brian. That's
- 18:58Speaker 1: Brian Gregory from the Cramps, hoping for an exotically flavored one,
- 19:02Speaker 1: but it turned out to be a good old fashioned
- 19:04Speaker 1: Lambert and Butler. Claire email us every week. I love
- 19:08Speaker 1: your writing. This is great. Claire goes on to say,
- 19:10Speaker 1: favorite band, Thin Lizzie, favorite mail artist, Bowie, favorite female artists,
- 19:14Speaker 1: Gladys Night, top three albums, Diamond Dogs, Bowie, Course Stone Tuble, Pilots.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Didn't see that coming, Claire, Fisherman's Blues by the water Boys.
- 19:22Speaker 1: That makes sense. Really love your work. Rock a Rolla, Claire, Claire,
- 19:26Speaker 1: you even spelled out RockA Rolla correct. Write us back anytime,
- 19:31Speaker 1: damn hanging out with the Cramps. Recommending great westerns. Claire,
- 19:37Speaker 1: you're the best. I'm gonna read The Sisters Brothers by
- 19:39Speaker 1: Patrick DeWitt. I'm looking forward to it. I got one
- 19:41Speaker 1: book coming. I'm waiting, I'm waiting. I'm in this. I
- 19:44Speaker 1: hate I hate this, this like period where the book's
- 19:48Speaker 1: not finished, the last book, the new book's not here,
- 19:51Speaker 1: Like what am I going to do? I need to
- 19:53Speaker 1: be reading something always Right now, I'm going to read
- 19:56Speaker 1: this email from John McNeely aka Johnny Vinyl, who writes, Hey, hey, Jake,
- 20:00Speaker 1: your Motorhead Lemmy episode was awesome. You had so much
- 20:04Speaker 1: detail in there. What a cool story about you meeting
- 20:06Speaker 1: him back in the nineties. I can't say I met him,
- 20:07Speaker 1: but when I lived in LA in the early two thousands,
- 20:09Speaker 1: I saw him a few times at the Rainbow Room
- 20:11Speaker 1: playing the One Armed Bandit and one of those times
- 20:14Speaker 1: I got a head nod. One of my favorite rock
- 20:16Speaker 1: docs is aptly titled Lemmy that I own on DVD
- 20:19Speaker 1: and I've watched a few times. And to think he
- 20:20Speaker 1: lived in a small, rent controlled apartment is so rock
- 20:23Speaker 1: and roll, Like Ozzie. They just don't make them like
- 20:26Speaker 1: that anymore. And we were lucky to be alive at
- 20:27Speaker 1: the same time as those legends, John mcnealely, John, You're
- 20:30Speaker 1: absolutely right, complete legend, and we are lucky to have
- 20:34Speaker 1: breathed the same air the same time in place as
- 20:37Speaker 1: these dudes. Pretty pretty awesome. Disgrace sampod at gmail dot com.
- 20:44Speaker 1: You guys want to send me an email six one
- 20:45Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six sixty three eight. You want
- 20:47Speaker 1: to hit me up on voicemail or leave me a
- 20:49Speaker 1: text at Disgrace Sampod on the socials. I'm going to
- 20:52Speaker 1: take a quick break. I'll be back in a flash.
- 21:08Speaker 1: All right, Welcome back to the Disgraceland after party. Listen.
- 21:11Speaker 1: You might be one of those people who's just sitting around,
- 21:14Speaker 1: You're going through your business, and you're like, look, I'm
- 21:16Speaker 1: just so sick of these podcasts that I'm listening to.
- 21:19Speaker 1: I got I got like four or five podcasts that
- 21:23Speaker 1: I'm that I'm subscribed to that I'm following. I'm really
- 21:26Speaker 1: in on like two of them. The others they just
- 21:30Speaker 1: kind of build up in my feed and I don't
- 21:31Speaker 1: really check in on them enough to really justify having
- 21:35Speaker 1: them still be subscribed to. And you know I'm not
- 21:39Speaker 1: I'm never gonna listen to so so you know, I know,
- 21:41Speaker 1: I know, you know, there's only so much time, But
- 21:43Speaker 1: I just want to tell you something you need. If
- 21:45Speaker 1: you need to swap one out and swap a new
- 21:48Speaker 1: podcast in, I would highly recommend it. Podcasts called Hollywood
- 21:53Speaker 1: Land by Yours Truly and here Me and the Me
- 21:56Speaker 1: and the fine folks at Double Elvis. We put this
- 21:58Speaker 1: together before you. We created this massive art chive of
- 22:00Speaker 1: Hollywood and true crime stories, and you can get an
- 22:03Speaker 1: You can get an archive episode every week plus a
- 22:05Speaker 1: new episode helmed by none other than the great Zeth Lundy,
- 22:10Speaker 1: where Zeth will bring you through that week's subject in
- 22:13Speaker 1: an engaging and compelling way. I'm in there as well,
- 22:18Speaker 1: talking to Zesth giving you our recommendations, talking about whatever
- 22:21Speaker 1: that week's subject is. This week's subject was Lindsay Lohan.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Now we do this bit where I've got to do
- 22:27Speaker 1: music recommendations based on the Hollywood Lands subject and Matt
- 22:32Speaker 1: once you give the fine people a taste of Hollywood Land.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Jake, what music recks inspired by Lindsay Lohan do you
- 22:40Speaker 3: have for us today?
- 22:41Speaker 1: This was this was a weird way into music recommendations.
- 22:45Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie Lindsay Lohan to the Canyons to
- 22:48Speaker 1: the Canyon soundtrack. Not a lot of great stuff on there,
- 22:51Speaker 1: but a great band, the Dumb Dumb Girls from the
- 22:53Speaker 1: late aughts. Yep, you're nodding along, you remember the dumb
- 22:56Speaker 1: Dumb Girls. Dumb dumb Girls. I could just recommend them
- 22:59Speaker 1: and that would be fine. However, I'm gonna recommend an
- 23:02Speaker 1: entryway song for You guys. Smith's cover the Dumb Dumb
- 23:07Speaker 1: Girl's cover of There's a Light That Never Goes Out
- 23:10Speaker 1: by the Smith's incredible Smith song and their version is amazing,
- 23:14Speaker 1: and it's cool to hear this song from a female perspective.
- 23:17Speaker 1: It's from a EP they put out in twenty eleven
- 23:20Speaker 1: called He Gets Me High Dumb Dumb Girls, There's a
- 23:23Speaker 1: Light That Never Goes Out Lindsay Lohan. I thought Lindsay.
- 23:27Speaker 1: I could go Lindsay Buckingham. I could go buckingham Nicks
- 23:31Speaker 1: because they're all in the news lately, but that no,
- 23:33Speaker 1: I'm not doing that. I thought low hand Han Hancock,
- 23:39Speaker 1: Herbie Hancock. Okay. A lot of people, if they're gonna,
- 23:44Speaker 1: if they're gonna recommend Herbie Hancock album, they're gonna recommend Headhunters,
- 23:48Speaker 1: and they should because it's a fantastic album, amazing. However,
- 23:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna recommend the album that my father once pulled
- 23:55Speaker 1: out of a stack of records in my living room
- 23:57Speaker 1: about fifteen years ago and gave me a look like
- 24:00Speaker 1: what the fuck is wrong with you? And that is
- 24:02Speaker 1: the Herbie Hancock album nineteen sixty nine. Fat Albert Rotunda. Okay,
- 24:08Speaker 1: I love that album.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Yes, and your dad hates it because I brought it
- 24:12Speaker 3: up to your dad once because I was it your dad.
- 24:14Speaker 1: It's gotta be he has a special loathing for it.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Yes, because I mentioned I was thinking of doing the
- 24:21Speaker 3: sound design for an episode along the lines of that,
- 24:23Speaker 3: and I mentioned to him and he was.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Like, guys, subscribe to hollywood Land wherever you get your podcasts,
- 24:31Speaker 1: get more content from Double Elvis on the rag, and
- 24:33Speaker 1: if you become an all access member here in Disgraceland,
- 24:36Speaker 1: you're gonna get those hollywood Land episodes add free as well.
- 24:40Speaker 1: All Right, so listen, you know what time it is.
- 24:45Speaker 1: It's that time. It's time for the sixty second Sports
- 24:47Speaker 1: rant and under thirty seconds, once again sponsored by the
- 24:50Speaker 1: fine folks at five Hour Energy in their new Confetti
- 24:53Speaker 1: Craze flavor. It tastes just like birthday cake with a
- 24:56Speaker 1: vanilla and buttery flavor to let you be unapologetically x
- 25:00Speaker 1: and unstoppably energize. Head to your local retailer www. Dot
- 25:04Speaker 1: five hour Energy dot com or Amazon to order yours today. Okay, Matt,
- 25:09Speaker 1: give me the buzzer beater. There was a time when
- 25:12Speaker 1: I was younger and I would listen to sports talk
- 25:14Speaker 1: radio in Boston and I would hear these dudes speaking,
- 25:18Speaker 1: and I would listen to their ridiculous old guide takes
- 25:22Speaker 1: and feel so self satisfied with my youthful perspective, my
- 25:27Speaker 1: whatever modern point of view on whatever the hell it
- 25:30Speaker 1: was that they were talking about their disdain for baseball's
- 25:34Speaker 1: saber metrics, and I was just like, whatever, man, whatever
- 25:37Speaker 1: helps Red Sox win. I don't care care what you
- 25:39Speaker 1: do to win, just win. Or how they couldn't deal
- 25:42Speaker 1: with Randy Moss's diva attitude, and I'd just be like,
- 25:45Speaker 1: who cares? Have you seen what that dude is doing
- 25:48Speaker 1: on the field with Tom Brady. Whatever gets us to
- 25:50Speaker 1: another Super Bowl. Whatever the argument was, I found myself
- 25:54Speaker 1: disagreeing with the old guide take. Fast forward to now
- 26:00Speaker 1: and I am filled with old guy takes. My son
- 26:04Speaker 1: is playing flag football. He's on the Raiders, So I
- 26:07Speaker 1: decided to go on YouTube and show him some clips
- 26:09Speaker 1: from Raider football in the seventies and eighties. And my
- 26:12Speaker 1: son is seventy years old. By the way, as soon
- 26:15Speaker 1: as the highlights start defensive highlights, that's all I'm showing them.
- 26:18Speaker 1: As soon as they start footage, of Jack Tatum, Howie Long,
- 26:23Speaker 1: Ted Hendricks just wrecking people on the hard astro turf,
- 26:28Speaker 1: pulling him down horse collar and dudes, almost every single
- 26:31Speaker 1: hit was head to head contact, just violent and literally
- 26:35Speaker 1: from the jump, every single hit, every single highlight. My
- 26:38Speaker 1: son starts going, that's illegal. That's illegal, Dad, you can't
- 26:41Speaker 1: do that. And I'm laughing because he's not wrong, because now, yes,
- 26:46Speaker 1: all those hits are illegal, but then they were all legal,
- 26:50Speaker 1: every single one of them. And of course, sadly, today
- 26:55Speaker 1: this type of physical play in the NFL, it won't
- 26:58Speaker 1: just get the rest to pull their flags, it'll get
- 27:00Speaker 1: the offending players thrown out of the game, suspended in
- 27:03Speaker 1: some cases. Now, of course, being a proud member of
- 27:07Speaker 1: Generation X, I love this style of football and I
- 27:10Speaker 1: missed this style of football, and this was going to
- 27:13Speaker 1: be the topic of my rent today. But then I thought, damn, man,
- 27:15Speaker 1: what an old guy take. I'm the old guy, so
- 27:18Speaker 1: I'm not gonna do it. I'm not gonna complain about
- 27:21Speaker 1: how things were better back in the day, because, man,
- 27:22Speaker 1: Oman Dow, I detest being that guy. Yet here I
- 27:25Speaker 1: am that guy, all right, Matt, how'd I do? Two
- 27:30Speaker 1: minutes and eighteen seconds, Jake, damn man, I think I
- 27:34Speaker 1: gotta get. I gotta get how we long to put
- 27:37Speaker 1: me into some training regimen here to get up to
- 27:41Speaker 1: snuff and get in under thirty seconds? All right? That
- 27:45Speaker 1: was the sports transponsor by five hour Energies. New confetti, craze, flavor,
- 27:49Speaker 1: unleash your party vibes, and as much caffeine as your
- 27:52Speaker 1: favorite twelve ounce fancy coffee, but with zero sugar and
- 27:55Speaker 1: zero crash, available in stores on Amazon or www dot
- 27:59Speaker 1: five our energy dot com. All right, speaking of football,
- 28:03Speaker 1: you know who once played football, not for the Raiders
- 28:05Speaker 1: but for the Rams, sug Knight. And then the upcoming
- 28:08Speaker 1: exclusive section of this here after Party coming up in seconds,
- 28:13Speaker 1: we will be looking into the insane story about Sugar
- 28:16Speaker 1: Knight allegedly injecting Easy with HIV AIDS. Once again, here's
- 28:22Speaker 1: Sugar giving his best o j Simpson. If I did
- 28:25Speaker 1: it to Jimmy Kimmel.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Technology is so high, right, right, So if you shoot somebody,
- 28:32Speaker 2: you go to jail fever. So the kids, you don't
- 28:33Speaker 2: want to go to Joel fever. Right. So they got
- 28:35Speaker 2: this new thing out that people sell them all the time.
- 28:37Speaker 2: They got this stuff to call, they get blood from
- 28:40Speaker 2: somebody with AIDS. Yeah, they shoot you with it.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Oh that death?
- 28:46Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 28:48Speaker 1: Yeah? Wild. All right, we're gonna get into this as
- 28:55Speaker 1: well as comments from Easy east Son on this subject
- 28:59Speaker 1: as well come up momentarily. But like I said earlier,
