Speaker 1: Chapter nineteen, Pinocchio is robbed of his gold pieces, and
• 0:06
Speaker 1: in punishment his sentence to four months in prison. If
• 0:12
Speaker 1: the marionette had been told to wait a day instead
• 0:15
Speaker 1: of twenty minutes, the time could not have seemed longer
• 0:18
Speaker 1: to him. He walked impatiently to and fro, and finally
• 0:24
Speaker 1: turned his nose toward the field of wonders. As he
• 0:28
Speaker 1: walked with hurried steps, his heart beat with an excited
• 0:32
Speaker 1: tic tac, just as if it were a wall clock,
• 0:36
Speaker 1: and his busy brain kept thinking, what if instead of
• 0:42
Speaker 1: a thousand, I should find two thousand, or instead of
• 0:46
Speaker 1: two thousand, I should find five thousand or one hundred thousand.
• 0:52
Speaker 1: I'll build myself a beautiful palace with a thousand stables
• 0:56
Speaker 1: filled with thousand wooden horses to play with, a cellar
• 1:02
Speaker 1: overflowing with lemonade and ice cream soda, and a library
• 1:06
Speaker 1: of candies and fruits and cakes and cookies. Thus amusing
• 1:12
Speaker 1: himself with fancies, he came to the field. There he
• 1:15
Speaker 1: stopped to see if, by chance a vine filled with
• 1:18
Speaker 1: gold coins was in sight, but he saw nothing. He
• 1:23
Speaker 1: took a few steps forward, and still nothing. He stepped
• 1:28
Speaker 1: onto the field. He went up to the place where
• 1:32
Speaker 1: he had dug the hole and buried the gold pieces.
• 1:35
Speaker 1: Again nothing. Pinocchiovi became very thoughtful, and forgetting his good
• 1:42
Speaker 1: manners altogether. He pulled a hand out of his pocket
• 1:46
Speaker 1: and gave his head a thorough scratching. As he did so,
• 1:51
Speaker 1: he heard a heart he burst of laughter close to his head.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: He turned sharply, and there just above him, on the
• 1:58
Speaker 1: branch of a tree sat a long, large parrot, busily
• 2:02
Speaker 1: preening his feathers. What are you laughing at, Pinocchio asked peevishly.
• 2:10
Speaker 1: I'm laughing because in preening my feathers I tickled myself
• 2:14
Speaker 1: under the wings. The marionette did not answer. He walked
• 2:20
Speaker 1: to the brook, filled his shoe with water, and once
• 2:23
Speaker 1: more sprinkled the ground, which covered the gold pieces. Again,
• 2:28
Speaker 1: another burst of laughter, even more impertinent than the first,
• 2:32
Speaker 1: was heard in a quiet field. Well, cried the marionette
• 2:39
Speaker 1: angrily this time. May I know, mister parrot, what amuses you? So?
• 2:47
Speaker 1: I'm laughing at those simpletons who believe everything they hear,
• 2:51
Speaker 1: and who allow themselves to be caught so easily in
• 2:54
Speaker 1: the trap set for them. Do you perhaps mean me?
• 3:02
Speaker 1: I certainly do mean, you, poor Pinocchio, You are such
• 3:06
Speaker 1: a little silly as to believe that gold can be
• 3:09
Speaker 1: sown in a field, just like beans and squash. I
• 3:14
Speaker 1: too believe that once, and today I'm very sorry for it. Today,
• 3:18
Speaker 1: but too late I have reached the conclusion that in
• 3:23
Speaker 1: order to come by money honestly, one must work and
• 3:27
Speaker 1: know how to earn it with hand or brain. I
• 3:31
Speaker 1: don't know what you're talking about, said the marionette, who
• 3:33
Speaker 1: was beginning to tremble with fear. Too bad, I'll explain
• 3:38
Speaker 1: myself better, said the parrot. While you are away in
• 3:41
Speaker 1: the city. The fox and the cat returned here in
• 3:45
Speaker 1: a great hurry. They took the four gold pieces which
• 3:48
Speaker 1: you had buried, and ran away as fast as the wind.
• 3:52
Speaker 1: If you can catch them, you're a brave one. Pinocchio's
• 3:57
Speaker 1: mouth opened wide. He would not believed the parrot's words,
• 4:01
Speaker 1: and began to dig furiously at the earth. He dug,
• 4:06
Speaker 1: and he dug it till the hole was as big
• 4:08
Speaker 1: as himself, but no money was there. Every benny was gone.
• 4:16
Speaker 1: In desperation, he ran to the city and went straight
• 4:19
Speaker 1: to the courthouse to report the robbery to the magistrate.
• 4:23
Speaker 1: The judge was a monkey, a large gorilla, venerable with age.
• 4:28
Speaker 1: A flowing white beard covered his chest, and he wore
• 4:31
Speaker 1: gold rimmed spectacles from which the glasses had dropped out.
• 4:35
Speaker 1: The reason for wearing these, he said, was that his
• 4:37
Speaker 1: eyes had been weakened by the work of many years. Pinocchio,
• 4:43
Speaker 1: standing before him, told his pitiful tale word by word.
• 4:47
Speaker 1: He gave the names and descriptions of the robbers, and
• 4:50
Speaker 1: baked for justice. The judge listened to him with great patience.
• 4:56
Speaker 1: A kind look shone in his eyes. He became very
• 4:59
Speaker 1: much interested to the stray. He felt moved. He almost wept.
• 5:04
Speaker 1: When the marionette had no more to say, the judge
• 5:07
Speaker 1: put out his hand and rang a bell. At the sound,
• 5:11
Speaker 1: two large mastiffs appeared, wearing Carboneer's uniforms. Then the magistrate,
• 5:17
Speaker 1: pointing to Pinocchio, said, in a solemn voice, this poor
• 5:22
Speaker 1: simpleton has been robbed of four gold pieces. Take him therefore,
• 5:27
Speaker 1: and throw him in prison. The marionette, on hearing this
• 5:32
Speaker 1: sentence passed on him, was thoroughly stunned. He tried to protest,
• 5:37
Speaker 1: but the two officers clapped their paws on his mouth
• 5:41
Speaker 1: and puzzled him away to jail. There he had to
• 5:45
Speaker 1: remain four long, weary months, and if it not been
• 5:50
Speaker 1: for a very lucky chance, he probably would have to
• 5:53
Speaker 1: stay there longer. For my dear child, it is you
• 5:56
Speaker 1: must know that it happened just as the young emperor
• 5:59
Speaker 1: who ruled over the city of simple Simons and gain
• 6:02
Speaker 1: to victory over his enemy. In celebration thereof, he ordered illuminations,
• 6:08
Speaker 1: fireworks shows of all kinds, and best of all, the
• 6:11
Speaker 1: opening of all prison doors. If the others go, I
• 6:17
Speaker 1: go too, said Pinocchio to the jailer, and not you,
• 6:22
Speaker 1: answered the jailer, you are one of those. I beg
• 6:27
Speaker 1: your pardon, interrupted Pinocchio. I do am a thief. In
• 6:32
Speaker 1: that case, you are free to go, said the jailer.
• 6:34
Speaker 1: Taking off his cap, he bowed low. He opened the
• 6:36
Speaker 1: door the prison, and Pinocchio ran out and away, with
• 6:41
Speaker 1: never a look backward. End of Chapter nineteen.
