- 0:00Salaam alaikum, and welcome back to another episode on.
- 0:02The aftermath of podcast, are you of the mentality of get rich
- 0:06or die? Trying, you have excess money
- 0:08sitting in your bank. What are you doing with your
- 0:10money? This Ramadan?
- 0:11Are you generous? Let's, let's see what today?
- 0:13We can discuss it. Sean lava.
- 0:14Surprisingly, my co-host has disappeared.
- 0:17And I'm not sure if I have a new co-host today.
- 0:19Neal awesome. So, how are you doing?
- 0:30Umm, Salama welcome viewers to after Isha the new version
- 0:35hamdulillah next to us. Thanks.
- 1:18Advantage of this blessed month. Of course, it only comes around.
- 1:20Literally once a year and this is the time where As we know
- 1:24from our last week's episode where we need to be trying to
- 1:27prosper spiritually. But today, shall we are talking
- 1:30about prospering in a different sense.
- 1:31Prospering through a cost-of-living crisis which of
- 1:34course is the title of our dear chefs, newest book which you can
- 1:38find online and line Chef me, that's right.
- 1:40For those of you who are in the UK, it's available at House of
- 1:43Baja Bookshop and the rest of the world, Amazon, I sent a
- 1:46satchel. So of course, we want to kind of
- 1:49get into this discussion, I'd you know, of course you as many
- 1:52of us will know our When a little bit of you every day and
- 1:56doing the charity stuff, can you tell us a bit about that?
- 1:59It's kind of kick us off. Yes, you're so we're on every
- 2:02night for at the first 15 days with the charity, the whole per
- 2:05pill. Yeah, of course.
- 2:06June in. Subscribe and and give as much
- 2:09as you possibly can. It's the charity that we set up
- 2:12to look at sustainable projects to look at the ethos behind the
- 2:16quote, give a man a fish, you feed him for the day.
- 2:20If you've teach him to fish, you'll feed them for life.
- 2:24Taking it one step further, we want to be able to build
- 2:27factories of fishing rods. So, the whole Community can
- 2:30fish, it's about looking at sustained sustainability.
- 2:33It's about helping widows to set up their business.
- 2:36It's about getting off ins into education, but before that
- 2:39you've got to build the schools. Yeah.
- 2:41Yeah. So is thinking that step further
- 2:44about lifting people up out of poverty in a sustainable way so
- 2:49they can provide for themselves. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 2:51Beautiful. Kind of angle and to be honest,
- 2:54Chef, with context of your book and with context of shahru,
- 2:58Ramadan being the month of giving, a lot of us will talk
- 3:01about wealth and the redistribution of wealth.
- 3:05And perhaps the same light is charity and can maybe maybe
- 3:09conflating the two. I know this is a big theme in
- 3:11the book and in your recent discussions, how would you
- 3:14define the two and do they play intertwined role with each
- 3:17other? I sent some Elohim and Elohim.
- 3:20So the Islamic economic system is reliable, On redistribution
- 3:25of wealth and it calls upon charitable services to be able
- 3:30to fund the types of phenomenal projects that Neil in the whole
- 3:34appeal, are trying to do and many other Islamic charitable
- 3:37services but the fundamental principle of is actually
- 3:40redistribution of wealth. And these two things are not the
- 3:44same. Charity is a donation.
- 3:48So, there is a project that needs to be built, whatever it
- 3:53may be, you're building a New Masjid, you're building the
- 3:55factories that you're talking about.
- 3:57There's been a terrible natural disaster in Turkey.
- 4:00For example, we need to be able to donate in that moment to
- 4:04support those projects that's charitable services but that's
- 4:08different to redistribution of wealth which says that you earn
- 4:13a certain amount. There is a proportion of your
- 4:16wealth. It actually belongs to another
- 4:18person. And that's the difference
- 4:20between the two, right? And Charlotte as we develop the
- 4:22conversation will try to To dig deeper into that and how we can
- 4:27actually think about when we are supposed to do redistribution of
- 4:29wealth. And when we supposed to do
- 4:31charitable Services, okay? Let's go.
- 4:34Great thing for provoking already.
- 4:36Yeah, definitely really opens, you know, handle, I've been
- 4:40honored to read the book and it really does open your eyes to
- 4:43the concepts. And, you know, you've taken your
- 4:47taken quotes from the Holy Quran from a hard Eve.
- 4:50And really, you know, once you read the book, you get a sense
- 4:53of Of purpose about yes, giving the one-off donation or sponsor,
- 4:57an orphan. But what is my duties to my
- 5:00brothers and sisters around us? What about building an Islamic
- 5:03community that are not poor? You know, people how people are
- 5:07struggling and people on our doorstep of struggling.
- 5:11Ooh, but do we take the time to think about the neighbors, close
- 5:14to us? Or are we concentrating on the
- 5:15neighbors? Four-wheeler?
- 5:17I feel. This is a fundamental debate in
- 5:19charitable Services. We've got poverty next door to
- 5:23us, But we've got a humanitarian crisis, for example, in Yemen.
- 5:27Yeah. Do we give to the neighbor that
- 5:29is near or the name of that is far?
- 5:31Yeah, these are discussions that we really need to Wrangle within
- 5:34our community and child and my follow-up book which is due at
- 5:37the end of the year. I'll go into more depth on this
- 5:39grip. Hold that thought.
- 5:40Thanks Charlotte, you know. Shocking if I can ask, you know
- 5:43I know I know Neil very well thing happened.
- 5:46I've seen the work that he does realize the impact that himself
- 5:49and the hope of hitting other Islamic Charities, that they do
- 5:51amazing work. And as Muslims, we can always
- 5:54Like rely on them to help us gifts to those in need.
- 5:58But very interestingly when I think about Distributing wealth
- 6:02equally, how is it fundamental and essential and different from
- 6:07charity itself because for me my mind right now is like saying
- 6:10that both the same thing about the same thing.
- 6:12But ultimately I think the compare not a from exactly
- 6:15they're not, they're not. So as we defined earlier on, we
- 6:18said, charity is a donation, it could be a one-off, it could be
- 6:21a monthly subscription. You say that there's an offer.
- 6:24And we give 10 pounds, we give 50 pounds a month.
- 6:26These are blessed acts and they do support So Many people around
- 6:30the world, but it's not the same as redistribution of wealth.
- 6:33As you know, no matter how many charitable one off donations.
- 6:36We give, we will not lift people out of poverty.
- 6:39Mmm, around the world that will still remain because of
- 6:44inflation because there is a system in place that makes
- 6:49certain people richer and richer and we'll keep a certain amount
- 6:52of people down. So giving that Person here, 50
- 6:54pounds in a month is not going to lift them out of poverty.
- 6:58Fundamental redistribution of wealth.
- 7:00Does that now the Quran and Hadith speak about this okay,
- 7:04I'll explain it in three very simple statements.
- 7:07The first is from the Holy Quran.
- 7:09In Surah, Al hashr, chapter number 59 of the Quran verse
- 7:13number 7. Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala says
- 7:16the following bismillahi r-rahmani.
- 7:18R-rahim Kayla you're gonna do lot and banal Agony.
- 7:22I mean, come wealth. He's not supposed to circulate
- 7:27amongst the rich. Hmm.
- 7:30Wealth is not permitted in Islam to circulate amongst one class
- 7:34of people fundamental. I of the Quran, secondly, in
- 7:38saheeh passage idea our fourth Imam, zein al-abideen, sort of
- 7:41what a lot of sediment in at number. 30 says o Allah teach
- 7:48me, excellent, redistribution of wealth.
- 7:52So, there is a statement that there Is a specific issue of
- 7:55redistribution of wealth. So now we ask again how
- 7:58essential emotions are exactly. One of those are his words
- 8:00Allah, teach me, excellent redistribution of wealth, that's
- 8:05in sahifa. Hmm.
- 8:06And as you know, she felt so here's our JD is marked about.
- 8:08You know, it is certain that the from the imams bless it Tom.
- 8:12So the ISS wealth cannot remain amongst one class, right?
- 8:16Hadith says teach me distribution.
- 8:19Okay, so what is that distribution will come to that
- 8:21in a minute? But again, talking about the
- 8:23essential G of it in Islam, redistribution of wealth is not
- 8:28perfunctory. It is not something that is done
- 8:31as an afterthought or as a sticker over a wound or gaping
- 8:35wound. That doesn't really help
- 8:38Ayatollah. Shaheed Muhammad, Husain
- 8:41beheshti in his works on Islamic economy.
- 8:45Explains it in this way. He says, in your circulatory
- 8:50systems blood is supposed to be pumped around the entirety of
- 8:55your body to the right proportion.
- 8:57That your organs need it, right? So you've got the brain, you've
- 9:00got the heart. You've got the liver.
- 9:02Whatever is required the blood pumps?
- 9:04Accordingly. What happens if there's a
- 9:07certain blockage to one of your organs or to effect an effect on
- 9:13the whole body fails? Yeah he says if you understand
- 9:17that blood is supposed to be distributed proportionately to
- 9:20every organ as per its needs. It's the same as wealth in
- 9:25society, my son, if there is a blockage to one Community to one
- 9:30area in the city, if this city has more wealth in this area and
- 9:36has less Chelsea has this much. But you know the ends.
- 9:42Yeah, strength, them, for example, I mean, I used to live
- 9:44in a stressful, grew up in these places because, you know, you it
- 9:48has less. There is a fundamental problem
- 9:50and the same way, the body will not be able to sustain In itself
- 9:54because there's an ill distribution of blood.
- 9:57In the society, there will be ill distribution and they will
- 10:00be Poverty of the cry. It creates an imbalance
- 10:02showcasing about you. That's how fundamental
- 10:05redistribution of wealth. Is that is supposed to be
- 10:07proportionate to the needs of civilization needs of society.
- 10:12So as Imam sajjad early, so I said teach me, excellent
- 10:15distribution, this is what this goes into inshallah, you know,
- 10:19it's obviously a huge thing and the theme throughout Shyamalan
- 10:22is give give give and I Neil, of course you shall I.
- 10:25You've got so much experience in on that side of seeing how
- 10:28Charities work on the Forefront and also behind the scenes.
- 10:33But, you know, for a lot of people, I know you've done a lot
- 10:35of work with those who lack a home unfortunately, within our
- 10:38local communities. And Chef, of course, your book
- 10:41focuses on that cost of living crisis, they're going to be
- 10:44people who are watching this I presume who may be struggling.
- 10:47Now struggling is a relative term struggle.
- 10:49For one, is prospering for someone else, living
- 10:53comfortably. For someone else.
- 10:54I've never seen it though. It looks interesting.
- 10:56Yeah, you know it's an incredible thing to think about
- 10:59when you put it that way, that's why we're of course, like shook
- 11:02her and gratefulness is something the such a big thing
- 11:04is definitely, but what advice would you have to someone who's
- 11:08right now, really feeling the brunt of that cost of living
- 11:11crisis, and at the same time, they've got the knee and they
- 11:14want to give something. This is these are the days to
- 11:17give, you know, we're in the days of were thought to be
- 11:19beside. You just love Allah.
- 11:20A right now and we're approaching without their mom
- 11:23hasn't Course shot at a minimum. And then, what would you say to
- 11:26people who've got that thing but have don't have the capability
- 11:29to give sure. I mean, first of all, most
- 11:32giving us in so many ways, sometimes we just think it's
- 11:35Financial, but given with these two hands that you have one have
- 11:39wherever you given your time, so maybe you could approach a
- 11:44charitable organization, maybe you're a supermarket and you're
- 11:47going along along the High Street and you see a homeless
- 11:50person, mmm, from my humble experience.
- 11:54And that homeless person may not want the food.
- 11:57Yeah. When you sit down and spend a
- 11:59bit of time with them and talk to them and treat them like a
- 12:01human being, because that's what they are.
- 12:04That's fallen on bad times that conversation can make their day.
- 12:07So yeah, you may have a couple of pounds to give them.
- 12:10It may be a few Pence to give them, whatever is in your remit
- 12:15time, is the biggest thing to give whether you are contact a
- 12:19local charity organization and say, look, I work in my
- 12:23professional field. As an administrator or whatever
- 12:26your field is, there's always a need for you two to work.
- 12:30There's always some way for you to fit in and you can make that
- 12:34near in trauma done in this beautiful month, to kind of put
- 12:37yourself out there. I'm going to dedicate an hour a
- 12:41week, towards a local calls, a local charity, and it could be
- 12:44anything. Why not even just knock on the
- 12:47door of your neighbor? Mmm, who may be struggling?
- 12:51You know, we've got elderly people in our communities and
- 12:55they could they might not be Muslim, they may not be from our
- 12:58faith but they are human beings there from the One race which is
- 13:01the human race. Mmm, you know and I'll give you
- 13:04a very humble example that I'm not trying to boast or take ego.
- 13:08I often knock on my neighbor's door, Carol help over shopping
- 13:12and mow her lawn for like Carol. Hi Carol.
- 13:14But they got a cow because she's you know in a 70s and yeah you
- 13:18know bit of icing something you can give to her.
- 13:21Yeah, but we don't do money is about changing your mindset.
- 13:29It's about looking at what you can do, what can you take from
- 13:32this holy month? Mmm, it's not about, just about
- 13:35the fasting and the separation from water.
- 13:39It's more than that, it's about the reflection of self is about
- 13:43having conversations with God, but if you don't come out of
- 13:46this month, as a changed person, then what are you putting into
- 13:49it? Mmm.
- 13:51Deep once the shaft when Neil mentioned that this is not just
- 13:56about. For example, the money.
- 13:57Yeah. Is that what you mean when you
- 14:00say also alongside the monetary redistribution of wealth?
- 14:03Can wealth mean other than just monetary as welcoming.
- 14:05Our wealth is is whatever is given from the heart.
- 14:08It's the smile that you give to. That person is to see.
- 14:12Actually, when we say redistribution from the Islamic
- 14:14perspective, we means the cart, the cart means purify, yeah,
- 14:17whatever you give or whatever you have to purify by giving it.
- 14:21It a portion of it away. So, Carter learn 10 shuttle to
- 14:26purify your enemies to give away.
- 14:28Give it away a little bit. Same with wealth.
- 14:31But Neil's point is, is a wonderful way for me to
- 14:34emphasize the difference between redistribution of wealth and
- 14:38charity. Right?
- 14:40Neal mentioned the homeless person if that person is
- 14:43homeless and you give that person 10 pounds or 50 pounds,
- 14:46are you going to the local Tesco's and you buy them a meal
- 14:49that's charity? Does it live there?
- 14:51Lift them out of wealth apology. No, doesn't redistribution of
- 14:55wealth. Genuine redistribution lift them
- 14:59out of poverty, but as not not done through Charities.
- 15:01So, of course, like know, for example, works with a charity,
- 15:04that focuses on microfinance a long-term sustainability in the
- 15:07Islamic economic system. No, it's not.
- 15:09It's done through West Baton model.
- 15:11Yeah. So beta model is a centralized
- 15:13system that sees the problems of a society and says that these
- 15:17are the sins that are being done because because of this poverty
- 15:22because of this issue and it fundamentally invests in people
- 15:26and breaks the chains that are upon them in order to lift them
- 15:30out. That's the Islamic economic
- 15:32system that we're trying to get to with respect in my humble
- 15:36opinion, our Islamic and Shiite Islamic charitable
- 15:42organizations. The vast majority of them follow
- 15:45a western model, mmm, which is simply to give charity to give
- 15:49donations Not saying that's wrong.
- 15:52In fact, that's brilliant. It's phenomenal is so much but
- 15:55akka and reward in it but it's not redistribution of wealth,
- 15:58right? Yeah.
- 15:59It's not fundamentally saying part of your wealth belongs to
- 16:05the homeless person. It's saying oh he's homeless.
- 16:08I'm going to give him ten pounds as a one-off.
- 16:11Whereas if you see that that wealth is in your pocket, isn't
- 16:14yours, it's actually a LA's and he is an equal partner in it.
- 16:20It completely changes the game and that's the redistribution of
- 16:23wealth. Islam calls for which in
- 16:26childhood. The book goes into a lot of
- 16:27detail we can talk about, but if people understand this principle
- 16:30and actually grasp it, that's when they start to look inwards
- 16:34and say, am I going to redistribute my wealth?
- 16:38My property. My might what belongs to me or
- 16:42am I going to give a one-off donation to support someone in
- 16:44shahe mardan? Yeah, people do need one off
- 16:47donations. There are events where people
- 16:49need it. You need it.
- 16:50Investments into projects, like the Hope appeals and many others
- 16:53but don't conflate it with redistribution of wealth.
- 16:56It's not the same Jack. Let's say I earn hypothetically
- 17:0010,000 pounds a month, Masha Allah I've tried real cost of
- 17:02doing well, bro. Half weather is yes.
- 17:21After all expenses being paid. Yes, at the end of the year.
- 17:24Let's just continue unless you have paid off my whole.
- 17:26Yes but everything. Everything that have left over
- 17:28is it technically still, not mine?
- 17:30If I paid my sister caught on homes, does it really have to go
- 17:33to bait them on? I said, so here.
- 17:35Now we go into the the actual practical model of the system
- 17:40redistribution of wealth in Islam.
- 17:42Inserted baccarat Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala has a verse
- 17:45of the Quran where he says. Bismillahi r-rahmani.
- 17:47R-rahim. Yes I don't like her mother.
- 17:49You Unfair Coon, they ask you all to sort of lot what should
- 17:53they spend? Not?
- 17:54How much should they spend? What should they spend?
- 17:56Because Muslims, as you said don't just give wealth they give
- 18:00time. They give food stuffs.
- 18:03They give horses. They give weapons at the time of
- 18:05the Prophet. What should we spend the
- 18:07artists? It'll look cool.
- 18:08Tell them Yara Saleh Al a for their Surplus whatever is
- 18:14Surplus to their requirements. That is what they should spend
- 18:18on the Islamic courts. Is like Neil has Illustrated.
- 18:23Okay? So this is where we go into the
- 18:25system. So let's take the figures that
- 18:27you were talking about five thousand and three thousand.
- 18:29Let's give our fire. Yeah.
- 18:30No, I'm happy with that. I respected that you suddenly
- 18:33pocketed 5,000 a month somewhere.
- 18:36I'm cool with it, right? I'm cool with it.
- 18:38So that's our dog. We have the sent me, Mom.
- 18:44Yeah. So you earn 5000 which for some
- 18:48people, they will be doing. Yeah.
- 18:49Yeah. Yeah, Masha Allah, your expenses
- 18:52are 3000. Let's Define expenses.
- 18:55You have your rent or your mortgage, you have your bills.
- 18:58You want to save up for the yarra.
- 19:00Someone wants to save up a marriage.
- 19:02Someone who wants to go on holiday all of these things
- 19:06which are legitimate. Expenses are counted within
- 19:09that. So you counted as 3, right?
- 19:11Yeah. 5000 - 3000 simply 2000 leftover axis.
- 19:15That excess that Aqua is Surplus.
- 19:21It doesn't belong to you anymore. hmm, you Imagine a
- 19:28belongs to you and that you can do what you want with it.
- 19:31Our new pair of kicks. I buy some shoes.
- 19:33I want to go out to a bagging restaurant.
- 19:36I'll go out to The Shard. It's not spending on the Dunya.
- 19:38You start spending on things that you don't need looking for
- 19:41a reason to select for a reason. Spend on things that you don't
- 19:43need that fight. Now, it is an expense comes up.
- 19:47Yeah, no problem. It's an expense.
- 19:49So now you have to pay 500 lb to change all four tires as an
- 19:53expense, it's not from the Surplus.
- 19:55So now another Three pounds is taken off.
- 19:58It's no longer 2,000-pound left 1500 pound of end of the month.
- 20:01Whatever it could be 50 pounds. At the end of the month, you
- 20:04could be 10,000 pounds. At the end of the day, figure
- 20:05isn't important following. The prescriptions of Islam is
- 20:09important. So now this Surplus figure that
- 20:12is no longer. Your requirement is the right of
- 20:15someone else. Now, you might say that's a bit
- 20:18heavy where you getting that from.
- 20:20As I said, the verses I laugh for your Surplus belongs to
- 20:25someone else. Now you want?
- 20:27Who said this? Not drop a logic.
- 20:29Amir al-mu'minin, are you gonna be about it?
- 20:31So I'm sorry about Allah who said I'm who are they in
- 20:34natural? Beloved is quoted as saying
- 20:37whatever is Surplus to your knees, you are nothing more than
- 20:42a treasurer for it for someone else belongs to someone else.
- 20:49Now this is where we go deeper into the definition of charity
- 20:52and redistribution of wealth. When I give a donation to
- 20:55someone, Basically I'm doing them the favor right?
- 20:59Neal project needs 50 Quid. I give 50 Quid to it.
- 21:02That's be doing a favor to that person.
- 21:06When I'm a treasurer for someone else.
- 21:08It's not a donation. It belongs to you Satan.
- 21:10Can you see the difference? Not getting 15 years?
- 21:12Quit as a donation, 50 intricate belongs to you.
- 21:15That's why I said you're a shareholder in my wealth.
- 21:18Mmm, the Islamic term for this is a mustache teen, mr.
- 21:23Heck is someone who is all right over your right?
- 21:26Chuck Wright has a right over your wealth.
- 21:29Five categories of people in the piranha and was the heck
- 21:32according to the quranic went to Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala.
- 21:35You know what those are try and guess what you want to guess the
- 21:38orphans no parents. Number one, the record of our
- 21:43family members, your near family members are most the heck over
- 21:46your wealth. So let's say I have 1,500 lb
- 21:48left over in the month. The first people have a right
- 21:51over is my family matter what Y is and orphans sure.
- 21:54I thought there's so many That's that's part of the
- 21:59redistribution but from zakat, sadqa homes and so on and so
- 22:04forth. We're talking about your
- 22:05personal wealthy and the first people that have rights over it.
- 22:08Mmm. Because orphans, even though
- 22:12they don't have parents, or one parent has died, they still have
- 22:15family members. Sure.
- 22:16Imagine you're an orphan in my family, so you do get my wealth.
- 22:19Yeah. Alma doesn't need to make
- 22:21orphans, as a separate category because you're you are in a
- 22:24family. You have a right over your
- 22:29uncle's wealth, you understand. So the first group of category
- 22:32of people are must-have Jean are that are Cordoba.
- 22:36And then after that Allah, subhanahu wa'ta'ala mentions in
- 22:39the Quran, the misaki, those people who are at home, they
- 22:45cannot find work. They cannot go out of their home
- 22:48to find work because for whatever reason, there are two
- 22:51elderly to go out there disabled differently-abled they can't go
- 22:54out. Yeah, and then Those who are
- 22:59Travelers. Yeah.
- 23:01What do you mean by Russian? Those people who are webinars
- 23:04Tennille, those people who are migrants economic migrants,
- 23:08those people who are Asylum, Seekers refugees in.
- 23:11The first country people have a right over that £1500 monologue.
- 23:15Now, as an example in our say, Nia in Leeds bubble, L.
- 23:20Shout out to bubble and we have a Christian Romanian, migrant
- 23:25community that came to Live very close to the house.
- 23:28A Nia 30 families, they didn't have blankets, they didn't have
- 23:32pillows, we raise money for them.
- 23:35Yeah. Now do we raise it as donation
- 23:38you can do that. Yeah but actually the
- 23:40fundamental is because they're what mr.
- 23:42Beale they've been stuck Travelers on their way.
- 23:45Yeah, actually there, mr. Heck from my wealth, they were
- 23:47right over my worth. Okay, third category, fourth
- 23:51category of people Allah says in Surah Allah, the ayaat those
- 23:54people who are sorry ill, they asked You for help, okay, and
- 23:58the fifth category is mutter Muharram, those people were
- 24:01denied help that blocked from help from others.
- 24:05They can't come and say I need help because there's something
- 24:08stopping them. Let's say right now, there's a
- 24:11sister in the community, she has a husband who was a bully?
- 24:15She can't go out to people. She her husband going to beat
- 24:17her up if she asks for help. Yeah, you need to spot that
- 24:20person and know that they're in a situation and give to them.
- 24:23They were right from your wealth.
- 24:25Five categories. This is read.
- 24:26Distribution of wealth. Why they have a right over your
- 24:30wealth. Neal tell me what's that?
- 24:32Famous Hadith. Someone can go into your pocket
- 24:35and take money from you. Yeah, I know you can a person, a
- 24:41brother. Yeah, brother is the one who can
- 24:44put his hand into your pocket and take from.
- 24:46Yeah, Miss Miller. Specifically, the time of the
- 25:07month. This is why I've heard the time
- 25:11of the Imam, Zaman. Time of mom is a month, it will
- 25:14be such a situation where you could put your hand in your
- 25:16brother's pocket and they will not feel or care and we are
- 25:19trying to establish that system for the amount of content.
- 25:22But is that what I'm trying to say is that meant to be a
- 25:23Timeless thing and it's not no it's what I mean.
- 25:26If you look at the time of the Prophet salallahu alihi Worley,
- 25:28his time was like that. Yeah.
- 25:31If you go back into the Quran, Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala
- 25:34mentions in Surah, Taha. Sure that the Mahajan and the
- 25:38Ants are They used to give to each other.
- 25:41Why locanda be him, huh? Salsa.
- 25:43Even though the other was in poverty, even though both of
- 25:48them was were in Desperate poverty, the other would give
- 25:51and the other would take from them.
- 25:52Yeah. And you imagine a world like
- 25:54that, that's but that's the model.
- 25:56Now, again, I've just been humbly critical here of the
- 25:59wonderful work that's being done out there by a charitable
- 26:01models. We have based our system, mmm,
- 26:05on charity. And we think there were supposed
- 26:08to give charity We all, but by priority was supposed to
- 26:12redistribute wealth, right? I would like our communities,
- 26:15our ulema, our thinkers, our presidents communities to set up
- 26:22an Islamic model of redistribution of wealth, as
- 26:25vigorously or more vigorously than they have charitable
- 26:28services. That they're doing.
- 26:29Because if you were to redistribute the wealth you
- 26:31wouldn't need charitable Services.
- 26:33It's true. Hmm.
- 26:35Do you know this this this whole talk about giving weather Three
- 26:39distributional through its Surplus charity donation.
- 26:44You've obviously much a lot of you've had a journey of the life
- 26:47and I've seen so many things. You've met so many different
- 26:50types of people as, as we're moving forward.
- 26:53In the years, the focus on not being broke or the taboo of
- 26:58being broke is is evidently there in pop culture, music One,
- 27:02social media, the money mindedness.
- 27:05You know what was I listening to yesterday the base success on
- 27:08money. Hey.
- 27:11Something yesterday, it was crazy.
- 27:12It was something like you could wear a pair of Yeezys and how
- 27:15the system would make something in demand or lobsters.
- 27:20I saw this crazy video say about Lobster Lobster Lobster seen as
- 27:24a high-end luxury, food scene, the same video, obviously this
- 27:27weekend previously. It was considered to be as
- 27:29ordinary because workers were given it then, because it all
- 27:32goes stale, very quickly. Sorry, I've got no, no, because
- 27:36lobsters was go stale very quickly.
- 27:38It It to be sent from coastal areas Inland.
- 27:42Yeah, it needs to be eaten quickly.
- 27:44It was considered as a delicacy. Yes.
- 27:46And it became an expensive item, but overnight is Switched as a
- 27:49commodity because it was treated as an, I was a diamond ring,
- 27:52they just killed two workers, five times a week because it's
- 27:59high in protein is high and Supply, but because it's
- 28:02shortened demand from outside of the country is treated as a
- 28:04high-end commodity. No one actually likes to eat.
- 28:07Lobsters, is the kit the theory, right?
- 28:09Because it's seen as short, in Supply internationally, can't
- 28:14fly lobsters and you can import that kind of thing, it's got to
- 28:17be you see, for example you go to a high-end restaurant and
- 28:19take out the fish, doesn't the tire.
- 28:21That's right. So you peel them alive.
- 28:23I said so what happens is whether it's shoes or whether
- 28:26its food or whatever it is the populace right now will think
- 28:30that a commodity is expensive or worthy artificially made?
- 28:34I said, based on the perception that were given and what's been
- 28:37given to us now, Long-winded question.
- 28:40What I'm trying to say is, are we to money-minded?
- 28:43Do we are, we too superficial? We'll look at what the worth is
- 28:46on a menu or online when we're trying to buy something rather
- 28:50than look at the value of it to us in our Dunya and arkla.
- 28:54Yeah, what were fed all this? Like you rightly said, yeah,
- 28:57we're fed on this in terms of media that's pumped into us, our
- 29:01surroundings, our environment people that we are around us.
- 29:05Someone wearing a nice pair of shoes and someone wearing a nice
- 29:08jacket. And that then becomes into the
- 29:11mainstream, you know, the got our phones, but social media.
- 29:15Yeah, you know, these reels even the title, the word real makes
- 29:19it sound like it's real and it's happening this thing that's
- 29:22behind me, you know, so you're the lucky turn this off, not the
- 29:27actual that after Maghrib logos amazing but what is being
- 29:30displayed on the towel Live Vision it tells lies your vision
- 29:36is feeding you. There's people that have been
- 29:38watching this on Soap operas for 40, 50 years.
- 29:42Looking at their dreary lives on the screen, and comparing that
- 29:46to themselves. It plays something in the mind.
- 29:48You'll dropping bars, man. I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
- 29:52I won't spit. All right.
- 29:53Now, you know, what's really funny about this stuff about the
- 29:57artificial nature of it, we're actually giving to people who
- 30:00are truly, truly despicable, yeah, right?
- 30:02I'll just give you an example of Tommy Hilfiger.
- 30:04Yeah. He famously said that, if I'd
- 30:07known black people were gonna wear my clothes, my brand, I
- 30:10wouldn't have sold it exactly. I made that for me, the people
- 30:14and black people were going with.
- 30:15I don't believe there's such a thing as black and white people
- 30:17will just shades of skin tone, but I'm really the point I make
- 30:22is that when you have these sorts of people, and we're going
- 30:25out and buying these labels and the Versace brand, as an
- 30:28example, a person who is flagrantly homosexual and
- 30:32corrupt, we're going after these products that as you said with
- 30:37the ez-zor lobsters, the whole thing has been created by a
- 30:41brand. Advertise to us in such a way.
- 30:43That is emotionally enticing. Yeah.
- 30:46And we imagine that we need these things.
- 30:49Not saying that we don't have nice things.
- 30:51Good quality things by things were by for yourself.
- 30:54Not because you're, you're chasing chasing.
- 30:58The, you know what? These guys are said that.
- 30:59There's some things, I genuinely can't get my head around, like,
- 31:03every few months, a new pair of Air, Jordans will come out or
- 31:06like a new iPhone. IPhone 14 pro 14, proplast 14.
- 31:10This bubba, I don't understand Every 12 months.
- 31:14Sorry I pushed you they advertise?
- 31:15Yeah. Do we do.
- 31:17We really need these things will my life improve is it worth me
- 31:21spending eight hundred pounds or dollars on a new phone
- 31:24everything? These are the questions that you
- 31:25need to ask yourself. Yeah.
- 31:26What's the need? You know, if you watch get
- 31:29reform has a trainers in your, in your closet.
- 31:32If you've got a Wardrobe full of clothes, do you really need
- 31:36another item of clothes? And then this is the point
- 31:39anything above your needs, which is Plus your son is not supposed
- 31:43to be a donation and we're oh, I 1,500-pound in my account. 50
- 31:47pounds goes tonight in shock. Amazon's donation appeal, if
- 31:50it's above your need, it belongs to someone else.
- 31:53It's not yours and inject. That's, you know, because
- 31:56someone might turn around and they might put themselves in a
- 31:59position where they think. I at the moment.
- 32:00Have, for example, two thousand dollars or pounds Surplus on
- 32:03month. What I'm here for to them?
- 32:04Yeah. Therefore, for example, to have
- 32:11a higher, Higher end, this wall that lets say I'm a better car.
- 32:15Yeah, so my monthly expenses are higher so to the point where
- 32:18their monthly Surplus is minimized.
- 32:20So what I deemed to be an expense is only an expense
- 32:23because in the initial place, I bought a luxury item which has a
- 32:26high maintenance fastens, just what I mean, it's a Snowball
- 32:28Effect is the snow. Not only have you spent more of
- 32:31the Surplus which wasn't yours in the first place.
- 32:33You're not spending more to maintain it.
- 32:35Yeah everything is higher the the the tires are more in
- 32:39currency. Actual experience is like shoes.
- 32:42A Home of choosing a mansion. Yeah, you've actually you don't
- 32:44need three rooms in your house. Don't buy, six by six, bedroom
- 32:48house is really simple. If you've got this amount of
- 32:51food, eat to your need, don't eat so much that you're greedy.
- 32:55The next man can't eat, it's difficult.
- 32:58If you increase your living, if you're living increases
- 33:01increase, your given Alpha like that or to the same polite, same
- 33:05amount. True.
- 33:05Yeah. Increase your given, the more
- 33:08you have, the more you can give so work hard and the more Give
- 33:12the more you can have I'll try to write with.
- 33:15We've got poets everywhere, wash all, but it does go back to your
- 33:18point earlier in terms of the need, we've got to really think
- 33:20about a need and what we're buying into there was a time 10
- 33:24years ago, that everybody was wearing erect.
- 33:26Jackets. Yeah.
- 33:28But nobody knew the meaning behind why it became so popular.
- 33:31So in the hip-hop culture that some are you doing it?
- 33:34Why would he do it? So arrest jackets, had a very
- 33:38big deep inside pocket if you ever had one and it it was done
- 33:43by American culture by gangs, because he used to hide their
- 33:47pistols in that. Yeah, we see the youth now
- 33:50walking around with their trousers halfway down there.
- 33:53The, the buttocks hanging out, right?
- 33:56Yeah. Why do they do that?
- 33:57Why do they buy into that culture?
- 33:59Because it becomes the thing to do is popular but they don't
- 34:02realize where that comes from prison culture, even like the
- 34:05spudding I'm going to share it was sudden, I'm not gonna motion
- 34:07on the table. I mean, spy, the in his well,
- 34:09why do we do that? Mmm, you know, listen, Think
- 34:13before you act, think twice and then act, once do some research
- 34:17into why you are buying into Brands why you're buying into
- 34:21culture and is it beneficial to you?
- 34:24Do your knowledge? Okay, so no, I mean, in the last
- 34:26portion of the discussion, I think it'd be nice to focus on
- 34:30now and the urgency of giving now, or re thinking at the bare
- 34:35minimum reshaping our mentality for this coming few weeks left,
- 34:39we have ensure on a mobile. Yeah.
- 34:41So say it. If you don't mind I'll put you
- 34:43on the spot. You know I like you know I know
- 34:45you're not gonna do that why we gotta do this now and how does
- 34:48that link to my spirituality? Because I'm trying to just do my
- 34:51fast but he must a long time. Have my afar and then start my
- 34:55next day. My mind is blank.
- 34:56Why does it really? Yeah.
- 34:58How do you put me on the spot? Dangerous there's a link between
- 35:01the two because of llamas on you mean yeah I mean what if there
- 35:06is someone out there talking about the here and now just
- 35:09forget it - lets listen let's step outside.
- 35:12Although that's appreciate we are Ramadan and there's more
- 35:14reward in it. But whenever wherever we are at
- 35:17any stage in our life, whatever month, wherever they of the
- 35:19week, if we see someone that needs something we need to give
- 35:23ultimately if I get rewards, forget as long as I get gender
- 35:26as a human being, although we have to keep those in mind as a
- 35:29human being, we should give to the Here and Now ultimately,
- 35:32because imagine you are in that position and I was doing a live
- 35:36show with the Neil knows, from last year, for the hope of
- 35:38young. I remember and you measure the
- 35:40point. The I remember today.
- 35:42A during a different recording. I'm going to go into that by the
- 35:45emotion on there and we were talking about food, we can you
- 35:50know, fast during this holy month and mentally know we're
- 35:54going to be comfortable at home. There's gonna be a fire on the
- 35:56table, but there are those fasting without a floor true.
- 36:00So if we ask ourselves these questions or if we Ponder and
- 36:05reflect on the reality of the world, first of all on the side,
- 36:08why Charities important and a links Bank back to the For point
- 36:12that if you copy of put a cross-check on it which is the
- 36:14redistribution of wealth. If I could have a far country as
- 36:17a Muslim as another Muslim out there he doesn't have thought
- 36:20after his first definitely something is wrong in society.
- 36:23Yeah, something is. Sometimes those Muslims are
- 36:24actually in our own Community. You're sitting next to the
- 36:27middle Hussein ear and because they have not got a voice.
- 36:32You would never know they're shy because I don't want to come
- 36:35exactly. They don't have authority
- 36:37either. Yeah, yeah, they will come to
- 36:39the mosque, just to eat. Yeah.
- 36:41It will come to them. Mosque.
- 36:43Sometimes in our in our mashed is we go there and we're feeding
- 36:46people already have food we live in this in this like age of
- 36:50expectation. Yeah.
- 36:51Well people are offended if you don't invite them over for a far
- 36:55or if you don't volunteer to pay at a restaurant and you don't
- 36:57take to Palau and she see what I mean.
- 36:59But at the end of the day, we have to understand that we are
- 37:02living in a cost-of-living crisis Beyond, people aren't
- 37:05always prepared to put three fingers on the table for each
- 37:08meal and stuff like that. When you go out it's not always
- 37:11capable for a lot of He won. Sometimes we have to be
- 37:13conscious of that and we have to, we have to adapt in the
- 37:16situation. Yeah.
- 37:18The expectations are as artificial as the brand that
- 37:23we're buying into. Yeah, because it's all the fee.
- 37:27So, you know, some cultures are known for their generosity,
- 37:30where it's like, everybody fights to be able to pay the
- 37:33bill and, you know, the one who doesn't is kind of an
- 37:37embarrassment for them, but Shuffle mode on, you know, it's
- 37:40supposed to teach you that. That there are people who are
- 37:43struggling out there. You don't see there anything but
- 37:46their face, but you don't know what's happening inside their
- 37:48bodies and you are supposed to experience for those 12 hours of
- 37:53the faster, 14 hours of the fourth, whatever what they're
- 37:56genuinely going through every day.
- 37:58And if you can't change your behavior after genuinely feeling
- 38:02what another person is going through, I don't know what else
- 38:04is going to change your behavior, true.
- 38:06If you're still acting the same at the end of your hunger
- 38:10knowing that you've got Comfort when you know, This person next
- 38:13to you is going to continue to go hungry again.
- 38:15Tonight. There's nothing is going to
- 38:17shake you out of that you've missed the point of fasting.
- 38:20True. Yeah, definitely.
- 38:22You know, knowing we were going to discuss this on the podcast
- 38:24today. I wasn't sure when I can ask
- 38:26this question or it may come out a bit rude but seeming that
- 38:30you're a scholar and we are, we learn from you never shot.
- 38:34Everyone listening is the source source of to us.
- 38:37Why are the people of n? Not teaching us this.
- 38:40Why is it my first time hearing this?
- 38:42From Chef, John from Lubbock, from my entire 30, odd years of
- 38:45being on this Earth. No one's ever told me or told me
- 38:48the concept of distribution of wealth.
- 38:50Only charity. Why are we hearing it just now?
- 38:53Are they hiding it from us? The only focus on homes, they
- 38:56talked to us about homes and charity, not this, not even
- 39:00zakat. Sometimes they don't touch on
- 39:01soccer. I'll be very honest.
- 39:04Okay, I believe humbly, we have fallen into What?
- 39:13I term as the donor agency, lead charitable model of services,
- 39:26donor agency, lead Services. What I mean by that is that the
- 39:32donors may Allah bless these wonderful generous donors, they
- 39:37have to be appealed to. And so, you need to put
- 39:41something on the The screen that makes them want to give.
- 39:46What do you do? You have to show them a picture
- 39:48of a your Timur? She has one shoe.
- 39:51She's living in poverty. You have to make the image and
- 39:55the sound in the background of the advert appealing
- 39:58emotionally, such that, the donor wants to give and the
- 40:02agency is trying to raise the money.
- 40:05So it has to be able to Present the case of the edema in order
- 40:12to make the donor, want to be able to pay that 10 pound a
- 40:15month subscription to help her. So the charitable services are
- 40:20being led by the emotional needs of the donor and the emotional
- 40:26manipulation of the agency. Okay, this is in International
- 40:31Development, Theory, called donor agency, LED charitable
- 40:36Services, everybody with me, okay?
- 40:39Muslim and she charitable Services.
- 40:43Mimics this problem. And so what happens is it
- 40:48prejudices? It puts this method at the
- 40:52Forefront of trying to raise money.
- 40:54When you go to a Gala dinner, the show you the video, it's
- 40:58three minutes long. It's showing you how they've
- 41:00given them money to this family in it and happy.
- 41:03And before this Islam has a different model of economic
- 41:09theory, which is rooted in liberating, liberating people
- 41:14from sin. Liberating people from shirk
- 41:17liberating, people from poverty and that informs that part of
- 41:21the economy informs the way in which we're supposed to
- 41:25redistribute wealth. Which informs the charitable
- 41:28services to answer your question.
- 41:30Very succinctly. We have focused on the last
- 41:34point of the Islamic economic system, just on charity and only
- 41:38on three or More popular types of Charity.
- 41:41Yeah, orphans widows education, building mosques nothing else.
- 41:48Even though the Quran has 20 Avenues of charitable Services,
- 41:53we have focused on four and we focus on a donor Aid agency, LED
- 41:59model. But these are the four that we
- 42:00can emotionally relationally, emotionally relate to them, but
- 42:03not because that's what the Quran tells us, right?
- 42:06So what we need to do and I'll be completely Frank.
- 42:08We need to rip apart the system, rip it up, not saying that we
- 42:12stop the good work. I'm saying you rip the system
- 42:15apart the aid, agencies need to come together that I Lamar need
