- 0:07Kansas City Royals traveled to California to face the Angels at Anaheim Stadium for a Wednesday night game on September 17, 1986.
- 0:15The Royals were the defending world champions, having defeated the Cardinals in 1985.
- 0:20They were now managed by Mike Ferraro, who had taken over from Dick Hauser midway through the season.
- 0:24The team was struggling in 1985, entering this game 16 games out in the American League West that was led by the high-flying California Angels.
- 0:32California was 23 games over 500 and had a solid nine-game lead down the stretch under manager Gene Mock.
- 0:38This audio recording is from the Angels Radio broadcast featuring announcers Al Conan and Ron Fairley.
- 0:44Alright Ron, thank you very much. We go to the ballgame with the Angels trying to reduce that magic number to nine.
- 0:5419 games left to play, including tonight, and this evening it's Don Sutton going against the Kansas City Royals.
- 0:58Beating it off Willie Wilson, who had such a marvelous game last night, he went three for five.
- 1:02And Lonnie Smith on deck had four hits. But the Angels pulled it out nonetheless.
- 1:07And the first pitch of the game is flung on and pulled forward first, right there at the bag is Rich, and he steps on the bag for the out.
- 1:14So Wilson first ball swinging as he did last night, but this time he grounds out.
- 1:19And the center fielder back to the dugout with his average down-of-pick from the 271 mark with which he began the game.
- 1:24So that will bring up Lonnie Smith, who with his four hits last night lifted his average to 293, and he is hot right now.
- 1:32He's hit an 11th straight, during which he's hit 511. Sutton with that slow wind-up delivers, and his fastball is inside, 1-0.
- 1:41So Smith, about as hot as he's been all year long, in fact his average of 293 at a seasonal high.
- 1:48Sutton right back to him, and there's a line drive, it well to center field, Pettis going back on the ball, still going back on the track.
- 1:53He makes it over the shoulder catch.
- 1:59So Lonnie Smith hits it well, but not well enough. Two down, and the opening hitting in Rudy Law will be stepping in.
- 2:06The former Dodger, former Chicago White Sox, now laboring with the Royals hitting 257.
- 2:13The Angels with Bobby Gritz at first base again tonight.
- 2:17Molly Joyner improving with that shoulder, but not yet ready to start. Gus Paladar at second.
- 2:21Dick Schofield, the shortstop, and Doug the Sensei at third.
- 2:25Sutton clanks it up, and the first one to Rudy Law is swung on and driven to right center field.
- 2:29George Hendrick on his horse, he's there, and makes the catch, and it's an easy 1-2-3 inning for Don Sutton.
- 2:35No runs, no hits, no errors. Nobody left on base, and after a half an inning here at the stadium, it's the Royals nothing and the Angels coming up.
- 2:43Okay, and again Don Sutton for the Angels, pitching for the Angels. Danny Jackson for the Royals.
- 2:49Danny Jackson's 10-10, Sutton a nice record this season, 14-9. Another game starting up just about the same time as ours, the White Sox at Seattle.
- 2:57Floyd Bannister pitching for Chicago, he's 9-11. Mark Langston, 12-11 for Seattle.
- 3:03And a game that started just a little while ago, and they're still scoreless in the bottom of the second, is the San Francisco-San Diego game.
- 3:11Let's start up about a half an hour ago.
- 3:13The light of blue is 9-10, pitching for the Giants. Ed Vosberg, who has no record at all this season, 0-0 on the mound for the Padres.
- 3:23We might mention that California has some 18 games left to play, including this one.
- 3:31Actually the Angels have played only 143, so it would be 19.
- 3:35However, there's one game that they won't play unless it's necessary, and that is a game at Cleveland.
- 3:40So for all practical purposes, 18 games left in the season for the Angels.
- 3:44Eleven of them at home, including tonight's action with Kansas City. Another one with KC on Thursday.
- 3:51Then there are three with Chicago on the 19th, the 20th, and the 21st.
- 3:55Three with Cleveland at home, the 22nd, the 23rd, the 24th.
- 3:59Then the Angels have three with Texas on the 26th, 27th, and 28th.
- 4:04Then a little bit of a road trip for seven games. They go to Kansas City for three games on the 29th and the 30th, and October 1st.
- 4:12And then finally, winding up the season, four games at Texas where the Angels are playing Texas Rangers on October 2nd, October 3rd, October 4th, and October 5th.
- 4:23And should the division race really narrow up, and of course they may very well, especially with those four games at Texas,
- 4:30and should the Angels falter in the meanwhile in Texas and do some good work, they will complete that one game at Cleveland.
- 4:37Bottom of the first inning, no scores. We begin and Gary Pettis takes the first pitch from Danny Jackson and grounds it to second base.
- 4:46Frank White right there to field and throws him out. So just like that, one away.
- 4:50So Jackson ready in a hurry and gets Pettis quite quickly, and Dick Schofield will come up now, hitting.251.
- 4:57Danny Jackson 10-10 on the year, an ERA of 3.49, trying to become only the second Kansas City starter with a winning record this year.
- 5:06The other Mark Gubbezow is 10-6. And it's really not the way it figured when the season began.
- 5:12They had Brett Saberhagen, the Cy Young Award winner, Tyler Leibrand, a big winner last year too.
- 5:18There's a fastball to Schofield for Sykes on one. But the starting rotation this year has been inconsistent to say the least for the Royals.
- 5:25The strike one to Schofield is just inside, one ball, one strike. Danny Jackson though has had his good moment.
- 5:31Though he has 0-1 against the Angels, his defeat was a memorable one because he threw a five-hitter at the Angels, which was his best performance of the year.
- 5:39The 1-1 pitch is a chopper toward first. Sykeser is there. He weighs off Jackson and beats Schofield to the bag. So quickly two up and two down.
- 5:47And that will bring up Downing, who was one of the key architects of last night's victory.
- 5:51He had a base hit in that seventh inning to help the Angels come from behind. And he has been doing it all year long for the Royals.
- 5:58He's the Angels' leading hitter against Kansas City, hitting.367.
- 6:02So two out, nobody on, bottom of the first, no score. Danny Jackson, waiting for Downing.
- 6:08And Bryan settles in. The left-hander staring down at his catcher, Jim Sunberg. Now he cranks it up.
- 6:15And the first pitch to Bryan is on the inside corner called a strike.
- 6:18It's Kevin Sykeser at first base tonight, Frank White at second, Buddy Biancolano at the short stop, Jamie Quirk at third.
- 6:25Strike one has popped up, foul ground, first base side. Sykeser coming down and over, and he makes the catch.
- 6:31And the side retires. So like Don Sutton, Danny Jackson disposes of the first three batters he faces and does it in a hurry.
- 6:38No runs, no hits, no errors. Nobody left, and we'll go to the second. Angels nothing, Royals nothing.
- 6:44Now the Angels are on a little bit of a roll, a mini-roll if you will. They have one, two, and a roll, seven out of their last ten.
- 6:50And the last one at the hands, they have at the expense of the Royals, if they can start this three-game series.
- 6:56They started it on Tuesday, and this is the second of the three that we're in tonight.
- 7:00Bob Boone's two-out single driving and pinch runner Devon White in the eighth inning on Tuesday, and that gave the Angels a 6-5 victory, just eating that one out over Kansas City.
- 7:09The victory reducing, as you heard, the Angels' Magic number 10 for clinching their first American League West title since 1982.
- 7:16Now despite Texas' 10-6 triumph over Oakland, California maintained its nine-game lead over the second-place Rangers, going into Wednesday action.
- 7:24Now Texas has, of course, won again, so that now is a gap to 8-1 half.
- 7:29In this game on Tuesday, Kansas City had tied the score in the eighth on Bo Jackson's two-run homer.
- 7:35Loser in the game was Dan Quisenberry. He's two and seven on the year. He retired the first two batters in the eighth before pinch hitter Wally Joyner beat out an infield single just out of Quisenberry's reach.
- 7:45White ran for Joyner, stole second before Boone lined an RBI single to right. Right fielder Jackson's throw to the plate was wide.
- 7:52Gary Lucas was the winner in this one. He's 4-0 on the season. Pitched a scoreless ninth inning, he was awarded the victory for that effort.
- 7:59Donnie Moore, who had yielded Jackson's homer on his first pitch, was the pitcher of record during the California rally, but he was deemed by the officials ineffective, so Gary Lucas got that victory, and of course that is their privilege.
- 8:13Boy, that first inning went by in a hurry, right? Have you seen it hitting this year? It went faster than that. We didn't even get a chance to spot the defenses in there.
- 8:21No, I tell you what, you have a bunch of guys down there in that batter's box this evening that are going after that first pitch, and that also tells you one other thing, that both sides know that the guy that's on the mound is going to throw strikes, and so you might as well go up there and go hacking.
- 8:34Of course Sutton, through the course of the year, has been working under basically a 100-pitch limit, and the Royals going up there swinging in a hurry, they actually play into his hands, because that means he gets the job done on fewer pitches.
- 8:48Here's Jamie Quirk, to lead things off of the Royals, no score in the second. Sutton delivers, and the first pitch is swung on and fouled away. Quirk is in there for George Brett. Brett started last night for the first time since August 29th, battling a sore shoulder, and obviously it's still a problem because he's not in there this evening.
- 9:07Quirk with a 2.18 average, five homers, 20 runs batted in, but that's a bit deceiving because lately he's been swinging very well. Sutton right back to him, and the strike one is fisted foul for the base way, and it bounces in front of the aim to dug out and back into the seat.
- 9:23Boy, you didn't get much of a hack at that one.
- 9:25I tell you what, that was a weak pop-up. Unless you hit a few of them. He still hasn't come close to my record yet.
- 9:35What's your record?
- 9:36I hit one back to the pitcher one night. Well, I'll tell you about that in a second.
- 9:39Here's a strike two from Sutton, and it's just outside one of two.
- 9:42You don't have to have that egg-popping contest. How soft you can pop the egg back and forth.
- 9:47So it doesn't break.
- 9:48That's probably as hard as I hit it back to the pitcher. It's just barely had enough on it to carry to the mound.
- 9:56Thanks to whether Quirk is outside two of two.
- 9:59And you had the full cut, right?
- 10:01I had a full cut. I came back to the dugout and Drysdale sat down next to me and he says, Ron, that might be the cuniest hit I've ever seen in my life.
- 10:12Two of two, the count to Jamie Quirk. Sutton delivers, and it dribbles slowly up the first base line.
- 10:16Sutton's down to get it. He quickly whips it to Gritz covering in time.
- 10:21That was a tough play because as the ball went up the line, Sutton came down to get it.
- 10:27Gritz started to go for it, and then when he realized Don was going to make the play, he had to retreat to get into position to take the throw.
- 10:34But the play goes into book three to one, and that'll bring up Frank White, who's hitting 266.
- 10:50There's the first one to White, and it's a curveball low. I want to know.
- 10:53He started to spot that angel defense for you in the first inning, did not do it completely, and would like to do that now.
- 11:01Here's the 1-0 from Sutton, and White hits a high pop fly over short, shadow left, Schofield backpedaling, and he'll make the catch on the grass.
- 11:10So two down and Kevin Seitz are coming up.
- 11:12We mentioned in the interview that Bobby Gritz had first, Palinord second, Schofield is short, stop and Descente third.
- 11:18In the outfield is Brian Downing and last, Gary Pettis in center, and George Hendrick in right.
- 11:23Bob Boone catching, and it's Don Sutton on the mound, the winner of four consecutive decisions, although he did not figure in his last out at Chicago.
- 11:33And he is perhaps pitching his best baseball of the year right now.
- 11:37His ERA certainly at its low point of the season at 3.77, and he's given up just one earned run in his last 23 and a third innings of work.
- 11:46Boy, he's been doing well.
- 11:47His first one to Seitz is a curve ball that's just high, 1-0.
- 11:51We saw Seitz for the first time last night.
- 11:53He went 0-4, but he displayed an outstanding swing, certainly impressed some of the angels.
- 11:59In particular, Moose Fiebeling, the angel hitting instructor.
- 12:02The 1-0 pitch.
- 12:03There's a breaking ball in there for a strike, 1-1.
- 12:05Moose was saying that he looks to be very fundamentally sound and figures he's going to be a good hitter.
- 12:12And that he has been wherever he has played in the organization for the Royals.
- 12:16There's one fouled back off a first out of play, 1-2.
- 12:19In fact, he has not had a pro season where he's hit less than 2.97.
- 12:24He hit 3.18 this year at Omaha.
- 12:26Kevin Seitzer filling in for Steve Balboni, who's on the sidelines again tonight with that sore back.
- 12:32And the angels glad to hear that because Balboni has worn them out down to the last two years.
- 12:37No score in the second.
- 12:38Two out bases empty.
- 12:40The 1-2 to Seitzer is a line drive.
- 12:42It's short and scooper. Reaches up and pulls it down.
- 12:46So Seitzer hits the ball hard but has nothing to show for it.
- 12:50As Don Sutton throws down the Royals in a hurry again in the second.
- 12:53No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 12:55Nobody left.
- 12:56And after 1-1.5, that's a big A.
- 12:58Angels nothing and the Royals nothing.
- 13:01Now if you're following the National West race at all, you know that Houston defeated Cincinnati on Tuesday night.
- 13:07And Houston has done it once again.
- 13:09And they're just about putting the Reds out of reach here.
- 13:12Houston now has 183, lost 62.
- 13:15And the Reds are 74 and 71.
- 13:18They fall nine games behind the Astros.
- 13:20And that makes the magic number now for the Astros.
- 13:24It was 11. It is now nine having defeated Cincinnati.
- 13:28And here's the way the schedule looks.
- 13:31So the Astros, of course, they play Cincinnati once again at Cincinnati.
- 13:34Then they return home to the Astrodome.
- 13:37And they have three with San Diego on the 19th, 20th and 21st.
- 13:41They'll be hosting Los Angeles for two games on the 22nd and 23rd.
- 13:45The Astros will then host the Giants for two games on the 24th and 25th.
- 13:49And then three games with Atlanta at the Astrodome on October 3rd, 4th and 5th.
- 13:55Meanwhile, between those Atlanta and Giants games, they'll be going away again to Atlanta on September 26th, 27th and 28th as the Braves host them.
- 14:06And the Astros also go to the Giants the end of the month and the beginning of next month,
- 14:10September 30th, October 1st and October 2nd for three games.
- 14:15And if Cincinnati doesn't rally here, you can pretty well kiss the National West goodbye as far as the Reds are concerned
- 14:22because Houston is very rapidly now gaining a lock on that particular division.
- 14:28One and a half innings already in the books here at the Big A.
- 14:36A scoreless tie as the Angels come up for the second time against Danny Jackson.
- 14:41Doug DeSensei, George Hendrick and Bobby Gritch do any honors as the Angels try to continue their outstanding play of late.
- 14:49They have been winning with regularity. They've taken five of the last seven.
- 14:53The pitch to DeSensei is flung on and fouled off on one.
- 14:56Doug is the Security Pacific KNPC designated hitter for this ballgame, so do keep track of his at bat
- 15:01and then listen to the Jim Lang Show on KNPC tomorrow between 6 and 10 a.m.
- 15:05and you may get a chance from General Jim to win a $100 savings account from Security Pacific.
- 15:10DeSensei grounds one toward third, quirk up to get the ball, guns across the sights for him plenty of time, and DeSensei is gone.
- 15:17So Doug, who started at a bat hitting 260 with 23 homers and 89 runs batted in,
- 15:22will have to wait until his next at bat to improve on that.
- 15:41Hendrick hitting 275. The first one from Jackson is in there for a strike on one.
- 15:47George also with 13 homers, 44 runs batted in, and really the second half of the year he's been making excellent contact.
- 15:54He swings and hits a high fly ball over third down the left field line, pretty shallow.
- 15:59Coming in is Rudy Law, and in fair ground he makes a one-hand grab.
- 16:04So Hendrick is retired, two down in the bottom of the second, and both pitchers mowing down the opposition.
- 16:11And then suddenly getting the first six he has faced, Jackson the first five, and that will bring up Bobby Gritch, who's sitting 288.
- 16:19The Angels certainly doing what you'd expect a championship team to do at this time of the year, and that's win and win regularly.
- 16:28They've taken 16 of their last 20 games, 26 of their last 36.
- 16:32Not to do better than that, there's a fastball that misses her ball one, want to know.
- 16:37And you know they're only 10 wins away from tying a club record. The 1-0 pitch, it's a line drive foul down the right field line.
- 16:45One and one to Bobby.
- 16:47Back in 82, a Jean Mautlet team established the organizational record for wins in a single season, 93.
- 16:54Of course, they won the division in the process. With 19 games remaining, including this one, they've got a good shot of setting a new standard.
- 17:01The one-one to Gritch, gives a ground ball back to the middle into center field. There's the first base hit of the night.
- 17:07So Bobby is able to single back to the middle, and that'll bring up Rick Burleson, who's at 288 as well.
- 17:14You know, Ron, Danny Jackson, though his record is 10-10, can be a very impressive pitcher.
- 17:22He has a good fastball, one of the better sliders in the American League.
- 17:26And I remember reading some comments made by a lot of the St. Louis players after the World Series last year, and it was Danny Jackson who most impressed them.
- 17:32There's a ground ball to third, quirk, bobble, picks it up, throws the first in time, and we'll get Ron's reaction on Jackson a bit later on,
- 17:39because the second inning is over as Jackson is able to get the Angels quickly here in the second inning.
- 17:46No runs, one hit, no errors. One man left the board, we'll go to the third. Angels nothing, Royals nothing.
- 17:52And let's check some of the action already completed also in the American League.
- 17:56Boston, as we mentioned, having beaten the Brewers 4-1, Dennis Oil can void the victor, scattered eight hits,
- 18:03and Don Valor and Dwight Evans hitting back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning,
- 18:07and that gave the Red Sox not only the win over Milwaukee, but their 11th straight home victory, 4-1 over the Brewers.
- 18:15Boston entering the contest with a nine-game lead in the American East,
- 18:19and this victory now cuts the magic number for clinching the division title to eight,
- 18:23and that of course pending the outcome of games involving Toronto and New York,
- 18:27and as we mentioned earlier, both Toronto and New York are in the process of losing right now unless they manage to rally.
- 18:33Any combination of Red Sox victories and losses by a competitor, of course, will give Boston its first division title in 11 years, since 1975.
- 18:41Oil can void is now 15-9 on the air. He struck out six batters.
- 18:45Walk one records his ninth complete game of the season.
- 18:48Boston had taken a 2-0 lead in the second inning on just one hit.
- 18:52Baylor drew a leadoff walk. Evans doubled high off the left field wall. That scored Baylor,
- 18:57and a wild pitch by Mark Knutson put Evans on third, and he scored on Tony Armis's infield out.
- 19:02Mark Knutson now takes the loss. He is 0-1 on the year.
- 19:06In the sixth, Baylor belted his 30th home run of the season over the left field wall.
- 19:10Evans followed by slugging number 24 for him high off the light tower just behind the left field wall at Fenway Park.
- 19:18We played two innings here at Anaheim Stadium, and boy, we've motored a loss.
- 19:24No score so far, as both pitchers have been on their game to this point.
- 19:28Bo Jackson leads it off for the Royals against Don Sutton, leading it off for us, Ron Fairley. Ron, I told you.
- 19:35Thank you very much, Alan. Hello, everybody.
- 19:37Don Sutton facing Bo Jackson, who had a good night last night and the first pitch of the inning.
- 19:43Gives a curveball hit sharply on two hops to Schofield. He knocks it down and goes to first base in time.
- 19:50Bo Jackson does not have a good start on the bounders block.
- 19:55But after he gets it going, look out. I don't think there's anybody in the league that can run with it.
- 19:59And I mean that. Now, Willie Wilson is on this staff, or on this ball club, and he runs extremely well.
- 20:04As Sundberg comes to the plate, but I'm not too sure at a hundred-yard dash that Bo Jackson cannot run it.
- 20:10I'll tell you one thing. He makes a routine round ball. Close.
- 20:13An adventure. That's right. You make a mistake with him running, and he's going to beat it.
- 20:18Here's Sundberg in the first pitchers, outside for ball one. Sutton has set down seven straight.
- 20:24You know, Ron, yesterday he hit the home run, and that got most of the attention in the past,
- 20:27but some of the angels were really more impressed by something else he did.
- 20:31There's a curve ball over the plate, but a low for ball two. What was that?
- 20:34You remember when he grounded his shortstop, I think it was the sixth inning against Bird Ruhle, he hit a rocket to Schofield.
- 20:40Something like one hop. He almost beat that play.
- 20:43It was a close play. Here's a 2-0 pitch. Swung on and missed for a strike, 2-1.
- 20:47And that was what they were talking about today before the ball game. That was better tested more than the home run.
- 20:53Well, you have to admire anyone that takes the physical ability out on the field and does something over and above what anybody else can do.
- 20:59Here's the 2-1 pitch. And it's lined towards center field. Penance on his horse, and he's there! He almost overruns it.
- 21:05A line drive into right center field, and Gary Penance with that speed of his own, put on a burst of speed and almost misjudged that and almost overran it.
- 21:14So there's at number two in the inning, and Sutton has retired the first eighth that he's faced.
- 21:19Let's pause for station identification. You're listening to the Angels Radio Network.
- 21:23This game is moving along like a hundred-yard dash. Major League Baseball coming your way on the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 21:30We hope you're enjoying the game wherever in the world you happen to be listening.
- 21:37The first pitch to Buddy Biancolano is swung on and fouled back out of play.
- 21:41But just to continue, I thought just a little bit.
- 21:44And that doesn't make any difference whether it's on the basketball court, the football field.
- 21:47When you see someone that has that extra burst of speed, boy, they just kind of pop your eye, don't they?
- 21:53Well, that's the way that Jackson is. Here's the 0-1 pitch.
- 21:56And Biancolano swings and misses way out in front of the changeup. And it's quickly strike two.
- 22:01Both teams this evening all swinging at the first pitch.
- 22:05Biancolano did it. Bo Jackson did it.
- 22:09Here's the strike two pitch. And it's swung on and fouled right up the home plate area. The count remains 0-2.
- 22:15Now if a team wants to do that to Don Sutton, they're going to have problems because he has a tendency to sense that and not throw you anything good to hit.
- 22:23Don't have to throw a strike first pitch.
- 22:27Of course, you know, I will say this about Bo Jackson. He is starting his career playing baseball different than probably anybody else,
- 22:35with the exception of a guy like a Mickey Mantle, but different than anybody else.
- 22:40Here's the strike two pitch. Tried to turn it over and ran the ball outside for a ball 1-2.
- 22:45Well, how many rookies have an entire nation looking at them before they've played even two or three games?
- 22:49Well, even aside from the media aspect of things, here's the 1-2 pitch. A curve ball low, and that's 2-2 now.
- 22:55Different in the sense is that how many guys start their career that have that kind of physical strength and power to go along with the speed and the running ability and the strong throwing arm.
- 23:062-2 pitch is popped up at the home plate area. Boone out near and now Descente coming in and running Boone off of it right in front of home plate.
- 23:15And that'll do it for Bianca Lana and Kansas City. We'll talk more about that when we come back.
- 23:19Another 1-2-3 innings. Sutton has retired the first nine that he's faced.
- 23:23And after two and a half innings of play here at the big A, still no score.
- 23:27Let's change the subject briefly in case you missed the UPI poll that came out earlier this week.
- 23:32The top 20 in football. We'll recap them for you briefly. And there have been some changes, of course.
- 23:38Notably, Tennessee, OSU, and UCLA falling right off the top 20 with Tennessee really taking a drop from number 8 all the way down to below the top 20, having lost to Mississippi State 27 to 23.
- 23:50OSU was number 12 last week. Ohio State lost to Washington 40 to 7, some kind of loss there, and also fell off the top 20.
- 23:58UCLA was right at the bottom of the 20, number 19 last week, and was idle but still managed to be edged off the 20.
- 24:05So here's the way it looks right now. Number 1 is Oklahoma. Number 2, Miami. Number 3, Michigan. Number 4, Alabama. Number 5, Nebraska.
- 24:12Then it's Penn State, Washington, LSU, Baylor, and Georgia. Number 11 is Auburn. Number 12, Arkansas. BYU number 13. Iowa number 14.
- 24:22Arizona made the number 15 spot. Maryland is number 16. And then Arizona State, unrated last week, unranked that is, now number 17 on the UPI College Football Poll.
- 24:34Florida State, also not on the top 20 last week, has made it to number 18. Texas A&M, which was number 7 last week, but because of its loss,
- 24:46to LSU falls to number 19, and number 20 on the UPI College Football Poll is Southern Cal.
- 24:53Gus Pollard or lead things out to the Angels in their half of the third inning. He'll be followed by Boone, and then back to the top of the order in Gary Pettis.
- 25:02No score, bottom of the third inning. Just one hit so far. That a base hit by Bobby Gritch in the second inning.
- 25:08And then Polador looks at one low and outside ball off. Gus, last night, went two for three. He's batting 360.
- 25:17Here's the next pitch, and it's a ground ball hit off the hands toward second base on two hops. White has it.
- 25:22And the short comes to Sainter at first base, and Polador is gone. Four-three in the putout.
- 25:28That makes one away, and that brings up the hero in last night's game, Bob Boone.
- 25:46Bob Boone batting 223, seven home runs, and 46 runs driven in. And the first pitch to him is blown inside for ball one.
- 25:54Also, we were talking in last night's game about the fact of Schofield, Pettis, and Boone as the next pitch goes in and low and inside to an 0.
- 26:04And in spring training, you knew that that primarily would make up the bottom third of the Angels lineup.
- 26:11And when you take a look at tonight's play, Pettis has 50 runs driven in. Here's the field pitch, and Boone's out of the back.
- 26:18Schofield has 54 runs driven in, and then Bob Boone has 46. That makes a total of 150.
- 26:27Would you take that in spring training to get 150 RBIs out of your bottom third of the lineup? Absolutely.
- 26:34Here's a 2-1 pitch on the way, and it's high and outside, 3-1. And there's still more games to play, but the point well taken is that the big difference in the ball club this year,
- 26:43the downing and defense, and the guys in the middle part of the lineup have had good years. There's one that's over first strike and has a full count 3-2.
- 26:49But that production in the bottom third of the lineup has really been a major factor why the Angels are where they are today.
- 26:58Boone stepping out. It is three balls and two strikes to Bob. They play him straight away.
- 27:06Jackson's pitch is on the way, and Boone gets it right off the hands, right back to the pitcher who knocks it down, and Jackson goes to first base, almost threw it away.
- 27:14And so Boone has got one-three in the putout, and they go back to the top of the order in Gary Pettis.
- 27:23For Danny Jackson, he is really almost matching what Sutton has done. He has retired eight of nine that he has faced, and Sutton has retired the first nine.
- 27:35Dennis bounced out to second his only time up. Bunch went along the third base side. In comes the third baseman and a pitcher, and neither one of them can make the play.
- 27:46Bianca Lata, not Bianca Lata, but Jackson trying to get a handle on the ball and took his eye off of it, and Gary Pettis has an infield bunt for a base hit.
- 27:58So a two-out single. That brings up the shortstop, Dick Schofield, who bounced out to first base his only time up.
- 28:17Keep an eye on Gary Pettis. He has 40 stolen bases and has stolen 18 of the last 20. Jackson comes set, and the pitcher played his looper into that field. That will fall for a base hit.
- 28:30Pettis holding at second base as Rudy Law gets the ball back to the infield. The Angels have runners at first and second.
- 28:38Well, last night, Angels started to put things together after two men ran. Of course, they had the benefit of a couple of two or three base on balls.
- 28:45And then they dropped a couple of hits in there, but all that action took place after two men were away.
- 28:51And here this evening, Hollidor bounces out, Boone bounces out, Gary Pettis and Schofield have now singles.
- 28:58And so the Angels were the first threat of the game. Downing is waiting, and the pitch is over for a call strike one right around the knees.
- 29:07Downing, working on a mini three-game hitting streak, has had a good month of September so far, batting right around 400.
- 29:16The 0-1 pitch is slug on and missed. Downing chasing a high fastball. And now Bryant is behind on a count of two.
- 29:25Also here in the month of September, Downing has hit three home runs and driven in 11. He has 82 in a year.
- 29:34Of course, Joyner leads the ball club, followed by DeSensei, who has 89.
- 29:38The strike two pitch is a call strike three in the inside corner, and Downing cannot pull the trigger.
- 29:44And so Schofield and Pettis are left on base. And for the Angels, they have two hits in the inning.
- 29:53They have stranded three so far, and after three complete innings of play, still no score.
- 29:59The full Senate has made its choices. William Rehnquist becomes Chief Justice of the United States,
- 30:04and Antonin Scalia has been confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice.
- 30:07Rehnquist was confirmed 65 to 33. That's the highest number of negative votes given any Supreme Court Justice ever confirmed.
- 30:14Rehnquist replaces the retiring Chief Justice Warren Burger.
- 30:17Television evangelist Pat Robertson told a large crowd in Washington,
- 30:21he will run for President if he gets three million signatures over the next year.
- 30:25Education Secretary William Bennett sharply criticized Robertson for a comment which suggested
- 30:30Christian activists are more patriotic and family-loving than other people.
- 30:34Another bomb exploded in Paris today, this one killing five and injuring more than 50.
- 30:38It's the fifth terrorist attack in Paris in the past ten days.
- 30:41The Arab group's claimed responsibility for Famos Blas as the United States' next,
- 30:45and its statement mentioned skyscrapers and the statue of Lubez.
- 30:48The New York Mets have become the first team to make the playoffs, taking the National League Eastern Division,
- 30:52beating the Chicago Cubs 40-0. I'm Mary Margaret Marrige.
- 30:56Thank you, Mary Margaret, and we'll tell you also, Boston, of course, has beaten Milwaukee 4-1,
- 31:01and Baltimore and Detroit have done Boston a favor and not done New York and Toronto any favor at all.
- 31:06Baltimore's beaten New York 8-3, Detroit's beaten Toronto 8-6,
- 31:10and of course that puts New York and Toronto now a full ten games behind the Boston Red Sox.
- 31:17And the Red Sox' magic number was for going into Wednesday 9. It is now 7,
- 31:22as a result of the Boston win and the New York and Toronto losses.
- 31:26We go to the fourth inning, and Don Sutton will be facing the top of the order,
- 31:32again, Wilton, Smith, and then Law.
- 31:35Don, coming out of the chute very strong here this evening, has shut down the first nine that he's faced.
- 31:43Sutton bills to the windup, and the pitch is a fastball high for ball one.
- 31:50Just a couple of added notes for you about Don Sutton as he starts again,
- 31:58and the 1-0 pitch fails high and inside, and the count is 2-0.
- 32:03His start this evening is 702, that is second only to Cy Young, who has 818 in his major league history.
- 32:10Don has sixth in strikeouts with 3,423. Two old pitches on the way, and Wilton swings and misses for a strike.
- 32:17The count is now 2-1. He has ninth in shutouts with 58.
- 32:22He is eleventh in innings pitched at 4,974 and two-thirds.
- 32:31Lifetime, three and four against Kansas City. He is on one this year.
- 32:37Sutton bills to the windup, and the 2-1 delivery is swung on and missed.
- 32:41That time the screwball heading out in front, and the count is 2-2.
- 32:46Willie Wilson, with that great speed, has hit safely in sixth of the last seven.
- 32:51When you look at the Kansas City lineup, their first three batters all can run.
- 32:562-2 pitch, swung on and missed, track three.
- 32:59And Sutton records his first strikeout of the game after falling behind with a 2-0 count.
- 33:07Then strikes out Wilson. That brings up Lonnie Smith, their designated hitter.
- 33:13The first three batters in Kansas City lineup, Wilson, Smith, and Lough, they have stolen bases like this, 30, 26, and 13.
- 33:21Wilson has stolen 30 of 38. Here's the first pitch to Smith.
- 33:25And he swings and pops it up behind home.
- 33:28Lonnie Smith has stolen 26 of 34 attempts.
- 33:33And Rudy Law is 13 out of 19.
- 33:38And so you can see the key as far as this ball club is concerned, you want to keep the first three guys off the bases.
- 33:45Here's the 0-1 pitch on the way. And it is just inside, and the count goes to 1-1.
- 33:53Sutton here at the big A has won nine of his 14 games.
- 33:57So he has been very effective here on the confines of the big A.
- 34:02Although he has had his troubles against Western Division teams.
- 34:051-1 pitch, inside again, and it goes to 2-1.
- 34:09Don has won five games against the West. He's won nine against Eastern Division teams.
- 34:172-1 delivery is on the way, and it's a curve ball over first strike, 2-2.
- 34:23Sutton has now set down the first 10 that he's faced.
- 34:28Lonnie Smith flying out to center field his first time up, working on an 11-game hitting strength.
- 34:34Here's the 2-2 pitch, and it's popped up behind first base.
- 34:37Back goes Gritz over his palador, and it's Gus Palador in the outfield grass making the play.
- 34:43And Lonnie Smith is retired.
- 34:45That is 11 in a row, set down by Sutton.
- 34:49That brings up the left fielder, Rudy Law.
- 34:53Rudy Law.
- 35:02Rudy Law flying out to right field his first time up. He's 0-1.
- 35:07Did not play in last night's game.
- 35:10And the first pitch is low and outside, ball on.
- 35:16The Texas Rangers won this afternoon against the O'Renaise.
- 35:20So if the Angels want to hold on to their nine-game lead, they have to win tonight.
- 35:23There's a pitch that goes outside, and the count is 2-0.
- 35:27Law batting 2-56, one home run, and 34 runs driven in.
- 35:33They play him straight away.
- 35:36Here's the 2-0 pitch by Sutton, and it is on the outside corner for a strike, 2-1.
- 35:42Sometimes Jim Evans, the home plate umpire, will ring up that right hand and it's pretty much on a delayed call.
- 35:50Here's the 2-1 pitch on the way.
- 35:52Curve ball pulled down the right field line, and that is looking foul.
- 35:56And so the count goes to 2-2.
- 36:00Kansas City this year did not do what they had done in the previous, oh, who knows how many years.
- 36:07They have a reputation of getting off to a slow start, which they did this year.
- 36:11But in the second half of the season, they always come on strong, and that did not happen this year.
- 36:16One of the few times Kansas City did not put on a good spurt the second half.
- 36:19There's a drive hit down the left field line, slicing down and giving chase, and it just goes foul.
- 36:25So Law will have to come back.
- 36:27It was only foul by about three or four feet.
- 36:33To give you an example, since the All-Star break, Kansas City has played right at the 500 mark, 28-28.
- 36:40And within Western Division teams, they're right at the 500 mark.
- 36:47And those are the two categories where Kansas City has always been very, very tough.
- 36:52It seems like they have always beaten up the teams within the division,
- 36:55and they have played extremely well the second half of the season.
- 36:58Well, that has not been the case this year.
- 37:002-2 pitch.
- 37:01He is low outside, so it's a full count now for him, too.
- 37:06But don't tell them short. They still have a good ball club.
- 37:10Just because they start 15-1 half games behind, I think that's a little bit misleading.
- 37:16Here's the 3-2 pitch, and there's a soft looper just over the head of Schofield in the left field,
- 37:20downing up with it, getting it back to the infield until the string stops at 11.
- 37:26Sutton retires the first 11 before giving up a base hit to rid you off.
- 37:31And so with two men away, that brings up Jamie Quirk.
- 37:40Quirk bounced out to the pitcher his only time up.
- 37:45So he is 0-1.
- 37:48Keep an eye on Rudy Law at first base, as we mentioned, he has 13 stolen bases.
- 37:52There goes Zoe. The runner does not go, and the curve ball is swung out of mid.
- 37:55He's down to first base, and Rudy Law has to dive back in.
- 38:05Back out of 0-1, Quirk batting 216, five home runs and 20 runs driven in.
- 38:11He is playing third base in place of George Pratt here this evening.
- 38:18Still no score.
- 38:24And then with a sign from Boone, a look to first base, and now Sutton goes over to first.
- 38:37On back is Frank White.
- 38:40Saddle a little bit more deliberate now, quickly goes to first base again.
- 38:46The way this game has been going, the way that Danny Jackson's been pitching,
- 38:50similar to last night, it may not take very many runs.
- 38:55That is the winning.
- 38:57Sutton again ready. He holds, and now quickly steps off the rubber and looks the runner back.
- 39:04So a little cat and mouse game going on in the field right now between Sutton and Rudy Law.
- 39:13Down again ready. He holds, and goes to first base.
- 39:18Now that may be a good thing as far as Sutton is concerned,
- 39:23but the guys playing defense behind him, they're going to get caught on their heels.
- 39:28Because after a while, they're going to start to expect that Sutton's going to go to first base,
- 39:33and he'll go ahead and make the pitch, and they get caught.
- 39:36Here's the next pitch. Pitch out, nothing doing.
- 39:38Rudy Law is not going, so the count is now 101.
- 39:41One thing Sutton is displaying though, Ron, is a different look with each step move.
- 39:46He is not just doing the same thing over and over.
- 39:48I would imagine for Law, who hasn't seen him in a long time, it's got to be tough read.
- 39:54I still think Jeff Zahn did it as well as anyone.
- 39:57Sutton comes set, and the curve ball is popped up down the left field line.
- 40:00Downing giving case, has a ways to go, and foul territory, and he makes the play.
- 40:07The quirk flies out to Downing D in the inning.
- 40:10And for Kansas City, no runs and a base hit.
- 40:12They leave one, and after three and a half, Kansas City nothing.
- 40:15Angels nothing.
- 40:16In case you missed any of the Tuesday action, let's recap those for you briefly.
- 40:19Then we'll get to what's been happening on a Wednesday stateside.
- 40:22In the National League on Tuesday, Montreal defeated Chicago 4-1.
- 40:25It was Houston 6, Cincinnati 1.
- 40:27Atlanta over LA 3-1.
- 40:29Philly took Pittsburgh 9-5.
- 40:31New York over St. Louis 4-2.
- 40:33And San Francisco meets San Diego 4-1.
- 40:35In the American, Texas 10, Oakland 6.
- 40:37Boston took two from Milwaukee on Tuesday.
- 40:402-1 the first game, 9-3 in the night camp.
- 40:42New York over Baltimore 8-1.
- 40:44Minnesota beat Cleveland 7-3.
- 40:46Toronto 6-4 over Detroit.
- 40:48California beat Kansas City in the first of this three-game series with the Royals 6-5.
- 40:52And Seattle blanked Chicago 7-0.
- 40:55All kinds of finals in now.
- 40:57Montreal has beaten Pittsburgh 6-5.
- 40:59And then Pittsburgh coming back in that doubleheader and whipping Montreal 4-1.
- 41:03Houston over Cincy 6-1.
- 41:05St. Louis has beaten Philly 8-5.
- 41:07Metz over the Cubs 4-2.
- 41:09Atlanta's defeated Los Angeles 4-1.
- 41:11We'll give you more scores a little bit later.
- 41:41San Francisco from L.A. via Airtown.
- 41:43Bushnell binoculars from Ocean View binoculars in Newport Beach.
- 41:46McClellan's stay for two at the Gene Autry Hotel in Palm Springs.
- 41:50Two sets of four passes to the lap stop in Santa Ana.
- 41:54To the lap stop, rather, in Santa Ana.
- 41:57And there's going to be much, much more at September 28th,
- 42:00and appreciation day right here at the Big A.
- 42:04There's the sensei and the first pitch is in signed for ball one.
- 42:07She's our TMBC, Security Pacific, designated hitter for this game,
- 42:11so you want to keep track of what Doug does.
- 42:15Danny Jackson winds, and the 1-0 pitch is hit high and deep to the right for this field.
- 42:20Back goes lost. See you later.
- 42:221-0, Angel.
- 42:24There's not a ballpark in the major leagues going to hold that one.
- 42:43As the sensei hits his 24th home run of the year, RBI number 90, and the Angels are on top.
- 42:49You know, Rob, that is an unusual event when Danny Jackson is pitching
- 42:53because if there's one thing he has been very good at the last couple of years,
- 42:57and that's limiting home runs by the opposition.
- 42:59Here's George Henrich, and the first pitch misses for ball one.
- 43:02He's given up 11 this year before that one. That makes 12 now.
- 43:06And seven all of last year, and that's a very low total for a starter as he is.
- 43:10Yeah, you're right about that. Next pitch is over for a strike.
- 43:14But there wasn't any doubt about that one.
- 43:17Doug the sensei, the second half of the season, has hit 14 home runs and driven in 43.
- 43:21Here's the 1-1 pitch, and George Henrich jackknifing out of the way.
- 43:25That almost got him.
- 43:27He really had to hurry to get out of the way of that pitch, and the count goes to 2-1.
- 43:35Well, that ball went about half the way back into those red seats beyond the left field fence
- 43:40between the 362 and 370 marker.
- 43:44That's a long way, folks, because those seats don't go up very high,
- 43:50but they go back far.
- 43:52And so when you hit one about half the way back into those seats, that's a long way.
- 43:55Henrich fouls one back. That account remains to him here.
- 43:58Speaking of that, we saw in batting practice today something that even makes the sensei's home run look a little pale.
- 44:06Well, you're talking about bow.
- 44:07That's right. Bow Jackson.
- 44:092-2 pitch to Henrich. There's a chopper toward third.
- 44:12Quirk coming in. He gloves it. Throws the first dot at time.
- 44:15Henrich beats it out.
- 44:17So, George Henrich picks up his first set of the game and then brings up Bobby Grich.
- 44:26Just very much.
- 44:28There's Bobby. He's one for one.
- 44:48And the pitch by Jackson. Grich around the butt, and he takes one right around the knees for a strike.
- 44:52So manager Gene Mott playing little ball here, asking Bobby Grich to bump Henrich along,
- 44:58and that maybe Berlson or Paladar could drive it around.
- 45:02Angels on top, one-nother.
- 45:06What Al was referring to in batting practice prior to the ball game,
- 45:11there's a toss to first base and Henrich is back.
- 45:14Bow Jackson hit one about three-quarters of the way back into those seats where Doug just launched one.
- 45:19And then he almost hit one to dead center field beyond the green carpet.
- 45:24It went way back there. Grich around the butt and takes this one inside, even up here.
- 45:28And anyone who's been to Anaheim Stadium and has looked out to center field
- 45:31and sees the green carpet covering the seats out there beyond the fence
- 45:35has to just marvel at the fact anyone could hit the ball that far.
- 45:40I can hit one that far.
- 45:41Yeah, with your golf club.
- 45:42But it says title is on the ball.
- 45:48Yeah, but you might have to pull out the driver to do it.
- 45:51One ball, one strike. Bobby, one for three last night's game.
- 45:55In fact, if you take a look at Grichy over the last month, the last 31 ball games,
- 45:59he has really been hitting well. There's a toss to first base.
- 46:03The last 31 games, Bobby batting 3-10. He has 31 hits and exactly 100 at bats.
- 46:10So he really and truly has had a really good 31 game.
- 46:15A swing and a foul tip off of the mask to the catcher.
- 46:19Yeah, the count is now 1-2.
- 46:21Actually, Ron, you go down the lineup.
- 46:23Pettis, Skocium, downing to Sensei, Hendrick, Grich, Boone.
- 46:28They've all had good second halves and that's why the Angels have had so many wins.
- 46:32That's right.
- 46:33Why don't you just take a look at the last 20 games for example.
- 46:36Here's the 1-2 pitch and it's found a way off to our right.
- 46:39And it remains at 1-2. The Angels have won 16 of the last 20.
- 46:43Well, you've got to win 17 of 20 to gain any ground.
- 46:46The Angels started that last road trip with a 7-1 half game lead
- 46:49and they came home with a 9 game lead.
- 46:51They picked up a game and a half of the Rangers.
- 46:54Here's the next pitch by Jackson and it's inside with a curve ball.
- 46:57The count goes to 2-2.
- 46:58Did you read Larry Parrish's quote in the paper today?
- 47:01Yeah, I saw that this morning and he says the only hope for the Texas Rangers
- 47:05is if the Angels have the bottom fall out of them.
- 47:08That's a fairly good assessment.
- 47:102-2 pitch foul straight back again. The count remains at 2-2.
- 47:13He also added that we're going to have to win just about every game.
- 47:16Yep.
- 47:17And that may not be enough.
- 47:19Two balls, two strikes to Bobby.
- 47:23He's batting 2-88.
- 47:25And with that last base hit he's batting 2-90.
- 47:28There's a curve ball hit well to center field but not well enough.
- 47:31Wilson is waiting for it.
- 47:33And he makes the catch and there's that number one.
- 47:35You know a lot earlier in the broadcast I decided to bring up something.
- 47:38If you're listening to this on any YouTube channel other than Classic Baseball on the Radio,
- 47:44be sure to check out the YouTube channel Classic Baseball on the Radio.
- 47:49This game was first posted.
- 47:51...about Danny Jackson who was cut off at the inning where I wonder if I get your feedback on it now.
- 47:56During the World Series the Cardinals apparently were impressed with the Royal pitching staff
- 48:01but of all of the starters, Saber Hagen, Zubizar, Jackson, Lebran,
- 48:07it was Danny Jackson who most impressed them.
- 48:10What are your thoughts on him as a pitcher?
- 48:12Well I'm trying to figure out how he's 10-10 because in watching him pitch
- 48:16I've always thought he's a much better pitcher than that.
- 48:18There's a tailing fastball outside for ball one to Rick Burlson.
- 48:21Burley is 0-1.
- 48:24And having never hit off of him it is tough to really make an accurate evaluation
- 48:30but based upon what I've seen he should have better numbers than what he has posted.
- 48:36...that's in the dirt and Sunberg blocks it and then can't find it.
- 48:40Down to second base goes Hendrick.
- 48:42There for a second Sunberg looked like the ball was in front of him
- 48:46but apparently could not see it and then all of a sudden was looking all over the place.
- 48:50And that allowed Hendrick to go down to second base.
- 48:53I'm sure they're going to charge a wild pitch.
- 48:55And the ball was sitting in the batter's box in front of Rick Burlson.
- 49:00That was a quirk. I should say that. That was a sunburn.
- 49:03He's a third. ERA of 3.49 though Al. That's not bad.
- 49:07That's pretty good.
- 49:08That's pretty good as far as they evaluate pitchers today.
- 49:122-0 pitch is outside 3-0.
- 49:15So let's see if Burley's given the green light.
- 49:17He has been in a slight slump. He's had three hits in his last 21 advance.
- 49:23Let's see if Gene Mochner's in the green light.
- 49:26Hendrick with the lead at second base.
- 49:28And the 3-0 pitch is high, ball four.
- 49:35That is the first base on balls issued by Jackson.
- 49:39That's Bars for station identification.
- 49:41You're listening to the Angels Radio Network.
- 49:44Pretty fast moving game so far. We hope you're enjoying it.
- 49:47The Angels and the Kansas City Royals.
- 49:49The Angels sure want to wrap up that American West and they may be on the way to doing it.
- 49:53This is the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 49:58It's just Paladoer standing in.
- 50:01Jackson looks back to second base and the left-hander's pitch is on the inside corner for a strike.
- 50:07Gus bounced out to second. He's only time up.
- 50:11Hendrick at second. Burrow's in at first. Angels lead at 1-0.
- 50:17Jackson with the signs from Sunberg.
- 50:20And the strike one pitch is on the inside corner for strike two.
- 50:24And so Paladoer, having a rough time pulling the trigger here, has fallen behind 0-2.
- 50:36Biancalotta at line at double play, depth near the bag at second.
- 50:39The strike two pitch is a bouncer toward third.
- 50:41Quirk has it, two wide for one. On to first base.
- 50:44The sights here and they turn the double play.
- 50:48So Paladoer hits into a 5-4-3 double play.
- 50:52And for the Angels in their half of the inning, they come up with one run and two hits.
- 50:57A home run by Doug DeSensei, his 24th of the year, a man has left.
- 51:01And after four complete here at the Big A, Angels won. Kansas City, nothing.
- 51:05And if you're joining us late, Kansas City Royals visiting at the Big A at Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, California.
- 51:10And of course our play-by-play man, Al Connan, assisted by Ron Fairley on the Angels Network out of KMBC, Los Angeles.
- 51:17Let's wrap up those scores for you, by the way.
- 51:19Texas over Oakland, 4-0.
- 51:21Baltimore defeated the Yankees, 8-3.
- 51:24Detroit beat Toronto, 8-6. It was Cleveland 5, Minnesota 2.
- 51:27Boston took Milwaukee, 4-1.
- 51:29Two games still going on aside from ours.
- 51:32Bottom of the fourth, it's the White Sox and Seattle scoreless.
- 51:34Top of the fifth, San Diego leading San Francisco, 1-0.
- 51:38Earlier in the National League, Montreal defeated Pittsburgh, 6-5.
- 51:42And then Pittsburgh came back in that second game of that doubleheader, defeated Montreal, 4-1.
- 51:46Houston took Cincinnati, 6-1.
- 51:48St. Louis over Philadelphia, 8-5.
- 51:50Mets took Chicago, 4-2.
- 51:52And Atlanta beat Los Angeles, 4-1.
- 51:54Dodgers having a terrible time this year.
- 51:56And the Mets, by beating Chicago, of course, have clinched the National East.
- 52:01Here's the way it looks in the American West right now with the Texas win over Oakland.
- 52:07Texas is now 8-1-0 games behind the Angels.
- 52:10Then it's Kansas City, 15-1-0.
- 52:12And then you get down into the big numbers.
- 52:14Oakland, 18, Seattle, 20, Chicago, 20-1-2.
- 52:18And Minnesota down in the cellar, 22.
- 52:20And the American East, Boston leading New York and Toronto now by 10 games as a result of the Boston win over Milwaukee.
- 52:27And New York and Toronto dropping respectively to Baltimore and Detroit.
- 52:32Well, we have completed the full inning to play here at the Big A.
- 52:35Right now the Angels lead it by a score of 1-0.
- 52:37It'll be White, Sainter, and Jackson to be facing down seven.
- 52:40Who are pitching a very strong game for the Angels.
- 52:42And once again, returning to microphone, here's Al Tunnel.
- 52:45All right, Ron, the Angels with the lead.
- 52:46Don Sutton trying to make it stand up.
- 52:48And his first one to White is a fastball little high, one ball, no sign.
- 52:52Frank popped up to short in the second inning.
- 52:57And he's trying to get the Royals started here in the fifth.
- 52:59Sutton into his windup, and the 1-0 delivery is a fastball little high to an 0.
- 53:04The only run, as you heard Ron describe, a solo home run by Douglas Hinsay, number 24 on the year for him.
- 53:11And that leads the club.
- 53:12He also has 90 RBIs now, and he's got a good shot at 100 before the year is over.
- 53:17That would be a career high for him.
- 53:20The 2-0 pitch to White is on the inside corner, 2-1.
- 53:24So the Angels on top, but this one far from over.
- 53:27A 1-0 lead against a good team like the Royals certainly, well, certainly not enough, you would think.
- 53:34The 2-1 pitch is outside and high, ball three.
- 53:38Three-and-one to Frank White.
- 53:42Both pitchers have been sharp tonight, particularly Sutton has given up just one hit to add a single to the left by Rudy Lohr last inning.
- 53:50Don builds to the windup, and it's 3-1 to Frank White.
- 53:53High pop fly behind second base, shallow center field, Schofield and Paladar are there, and it's got Paladar to make the catch.
- 54:01So White skies to his counterpart, second baseman Paladar, and that will bring up Kevin Seifert.
- 54:07And those certainly folks at Farmer's Insurance have discovered that...
- 54:11...
- 54:21...and here's Sizer.
- 54:25He's hitting 3-16 in his brief stint as a big leaguer, and he has been very impressive and versatile too.
- 54:33Sutton starts him, and the first pitch is a breaking ball on the inside corner for a strike, 1-1.
- 54:39Sizer, we're seeing as a first baseman, but the Royals have used him at third base and in the outfield too.
- 54:47At time called Bob Boone, some adapt by Sutton to have a brief conversation as they discuss strategy against Sizer and also, undoubtedly, the sign sequence they're using here.
- 55:01But Sizer's certainly a versatile athlete, and as we discussed before, he has a good compact swing, and that has been noted by both sides of the field.
- 55:09There's a breaking ball outside, 1-1 to him.
- 55:12On deck, Bo Jackson, Jim Sundberg after that.
- 55:16The Angels and the Royals going at it here in the fifth inning, and it's 1-0 Angels.
- 55:21John Sutton cranks it up, the 1-1 delivery is just blowing away, 2-1.
- 55:27For Sutton, this is his second start against the Royals this year.
- 55:32He had a no decision back in June.
- 55:34He's three in three lifetimes.
- 55:36Sizer takes a breaking ball a little low, make a 3-1 to him.
- 55:40It has been a most memorable year for Don Sutton.
- 55:45He won his 300th game of his career back in June, the 3-1 pitch, and it's high and away, ball four, and Sutton issues a rare walk.
- 55:54In fact, his first of the game, and Bo Jackson will come up.
- 55:58Sutton also, with his victory over Oakland in August, completed a rare feat, having beaten every team in the major leagues now.
- 56:10Just a few days ago, he got his 100th strikeout of this year.
- 56:13That's 21 consecutive years he's done that.
- 56:16And what has to be so amazing about all of these accomplishments, Sutton at 41, still going strong.
- 56:24He has 309 career victories, and he's leading tonight.
- 56:29Here's Jackson, and he grounds the first pitch to short.
- 56:31Schofield has it, goes to second for one, on to first and to third, and Gritz digs it out, but doesn't get the call from first-pace umpire, Derwin Marrow.
- 56:40And Gritz just throws up his arms just to say, why not?
- 56:46And the answer from Marrow was pretty simple, I don't think you got him.
- 56:51But the force on Sizer completed six to four, Jackson aboard on the fielder's choice, although the Angels thought they completed a twin killing.
- 57:00But Bo can motor down the line.
- 57:03So two outs and Sunberg will step in.
- 57:08Sutton delivers to him, and it's swung on and fouled away on one.
- 57:11You know, with all the speed that Bo Jackson has, one day he may become a big base stealer too.
- 57:20He certainly could learn the mechanics of a quicker start, and he has the raw speed to outrun most catcher's throws.
- 57:29So among his many potential attributes, base stealing might be one of them.
- 57:39Boy, it's unbelievable all the things he can do.
- 57:42The strike one, Sunberg, the text swing, and he went around.
- 57:45Or did he? Let's double check.
- 57:50One ball, one strike to count to Sunberg. Platham prior to Jim Evans saying no, he did not.
- 57:56Two outs, we're in the fifth. One nothing, Angels. Jackson in first base, Sunberg at the play.
- 58:02And Sutton goes over and drives Jackson back.
- 58:07Bo Jackson, he can hit for power. He can run like the wind.
- 58:13It'll be interesting to see how his career goes. There's a fastball inside, two and one.
- 58:17Really, the American League has been blessed with some great young talent this year.
- 58:22Asaco, Joyner, Incavilla, Tardable. Some of the young pitches have come along.
- 58:28Bo Jackson now added to the list. That throws well for the future.
- 58:32The American League really piling up some stars, and really, I think on balance, if you compare them to the National League,
- 58:38they've got a better crop right now. That's just my opinion anyway.
- 58:43Here's the two-one delivery. There goes Jackson. The pitch is inside to throw to Sackett, not nearly in time.
- 58:49And the ball goes on into center field. Jackson gets up and goes to third, and he makes it there easily.
- 58:56For Bo Jackson, that is his second stolen base as a big leaguer.
- 59:01And he forces an error on Boone as well. Well, there's an example of what we were talking about.
- 59:07He beat that play without any problem at all. He didn't do it in textbook fashion.
- 59:14It looked like he went in with an awkward head-first slide, but there was no doubt at all that he had made the play.
- 59:24So the tying run is at third base now with a count three and one on Sunberg. One nothing, angels in the fifth.
- 59:31Sutton into the windup and the pitch. And it's low, ball four, and that's the second walk Don has issued in the inning.
- 59:39And that is really rare for him. He came in with only 40 walks all year and some 30 starts,
- 59:45so you don't have to be a mathematician to realize he rarely walks more than one a game. And here he has walked two in an inning.
- 59:53And that has been the Kansas City rally in this frame. They don't have a base hit yet.
- 1:00:00Buddy Biancolana stepping in trying to provide it. Sutton delivers, and his fast ball is on the outside corner, strike one.
- 1:00:08Two outs, runners at the corner for the Royals. Sutton protecting a one nothing lead. Jackson at third, Sunberg at first.
- 1:00:16The strike one to Biancolana is a breaking ball that's just outside. Boone holding it there for play-dump fire Jim Evans.
- 1:00:22He says, nope, just missed. The total is one sided right now. One run, five hits for the angels. No runs, just one hit for the Royals.
- 1:00:31Biancolana popped up to third his first time up and he swings and fouls one at the plate. One and two.
- 1:00:39Last night Ron told you that Buddy Biancolana has just two home runs. Both of them came against the angels in a series in June.
- 1:00:48One was hit off of Ron Romanek and the other off of Don Sutton.
- 1:00:55And thus the angels calling him the babe Biancolana. Sutton has a one and two. Don starts to deliver but time called and Biancolana backs away.
- 1:01:08Lots of room in right center for the young shortstop who's been alternating at the short patch this year with Angel Salazar.
- 1:01:15Next one is cut out of this, strike three, a fast ball and Biancolana went after a bad one. It was up and in and he couldn't lay off.
- 1:01:24Don Sutton gets into some trouble of his own making in the fifth inning but he extricates himself. No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 1:01:32Two men left at the corners and we'll head to the bottom of the fifth. Angels won, Royals nothing.
- 1:01:37Here's a story you may have missed on Tuesday and we think it might be of interest enough to be worth repeating.
- 1:01:43Two children fired employees of the Los Angeles Dodgers and two of their girlfriends have been charged with embezzling more than $332,000 from the Dodgers between 1983 and 1985.
- 1:01:56The district attorney's office in Los Angeles says that former payroll clerk Edward Campos conspired with the other employees to credit them for hours that they didn't work.
- 1:02:06One of those workers were security guards. The other, the seventh is also a clerk for the Dodgers or was, certainly no longer.
- 1:02:14Now Campos who worked for the Dodgers for 18 years is also accused of padding payroll checks and adding the names of two girlfriends and also some fictitious names to the Dodger payroll.
- 1:02:24Prosecutors say that Campos got about a 50% kickback on the paychecks and this alleged embezzlement was uncovered by an employee who took over Campos' duties when he became ill in June of last year.
- 1:02:35None of the former Dodger employees fired because of this alleged scheme were players. We emphasize that.
- 1:02:42So again, some $332,000 allegedly embezzled from the Dodgers between 1983 and 1985.
- 1:02:51Well the American League batting race heating up considerably on Tuesday. Wade Boggs was the leader, 351. Don Mattingly right behind him at 348.
- 1:02:59They both did nicely on Tuesday. Mattingly a little better. Now it's Boggs, 352. Mattingly, 350.
- 1:03:06Welcome back to Anaheim Stadium. I'm Al Connand with Ron Fairley and Dick Nelson. Nice to have you with us as this series with the Royals continues.
- 1:03:13Angels leading at one to nothing on Doug the Sensei's fourth inning home run.
- 1:03:17And speaking of home runs, with this being the home half of the fifth, it's time to play the Chevy Home Run Contest.
- 1:03:23Bob Boone stepping in to begin things. Jackson delivers to him and a breaking ball is swung on a miss on one.
- 1:03:29In the jackpot tonight, $300. And our contestant, Susan Kintz of Upland.
- 1:03:38Jackson right back to the plate and the 0-1 to Boone is on the inside corner, make it 0-2.
- 1:03:44Boone of course the hero last night and he could become a hero tonight to Susan Kintz with a home run here.
- 1:03:50Jackson strike two pitch with a fastball outside, 1-2.
- 1:03:54If an Angel hit a grand slam in this inning, Susan would win either her choice of a 1986 Chevy Nova or S-10 pickup.
- 1:04:02The 1-2 to Bob Boone. It's a line drive at second baseman, Frank Wide, who takes a step or two to his left and makes the catch.
- 1:04:09So Boone hits it on the button but is retired and that'll bring up Gary Pettis who has grounded a second and butted successfully toward third.
- 1:04:18So one down and Gary's up again.
- 1:04:24We're in the Chevy home running, $300 in the jackpot for Susan Kintz of Upland.
- 1:04:29Gary Pettis taking his turn. He's hit in 10 of his last 12 ball games so he's been swinging well.
- 1:04:34In fact, he's up close to 340 during September. There's a fastball high to him, want to know.
- 1:04:40He's had a good last month, Schofield has. So his downing obviously to Sensei.
- 1:04:47The Angels collectively have been playing very well.
- 1:04:50Jackson's next pitch is cut on a miss, 1-1.
- 1:04:54Gary up there right-handed and as you know from this side of the plate he generally does better than from the other.
- 1:05:01He's hitting 280 as a right-hand batter, 252 from the left side.
- 1:05:06The 1-1 delivery and it's down low to him, two balls and a strike.
- 1:05:10Bottom of the fifth inning here at the Big Ag. The Angels enjoying a 1-0 lead.
- 1:05:17They won last night trying to win tonight. Fastball is outside to Pettis in the count 3-1.
- 1:05:22And Jackson certainly does not want to walk in if he can avoid it.
- 1:05:28Though Jackson stole a base in the top of the inning, Gary Pettis would be a good candidate to do the same should he get a board in the bottom of the inning.
- 1:05:35The pitch to Gary is flung on a miss, good slider and on the hand, 3-2.
- 1:05:44Danny Jackson out of the University of Oklahoma, only 24.
- 1:05:50And he figures to be a mainstay for the Royals for some years to come yet.
- 1:05:55He cranks it up once more, the 3-2 to Pettis is a fly ball lifted down the right-hander line.
- 1:06:00That'll slice though and drift back into the crowd.
- 1:06:04So it's still full to Pettis, 3-2. One out, bottom of the fifth, 1-0 Angels.
- 1:06:10Arrows facing another left-hander, Lee Brant last night. Jackson tonight.
- 1:06:15They're 22 and 21 against lefties this year. Pettis swings over the top of a breaking ball and strikes down.
- 1:06:22And that's on the second K for Jackson in the game and that'll set the stage for Schofield who has one hit and two trips tonight.
- 1:06:31The Angels, while they are one game over 500 against lefties as we have told you from time to time,
- 1:06:37since June 1st they have turned things around against lefties.
- 1:06:42They're 19 and 9.
- 1:06:45The pitch to Schofield inside, make it 1-0.
- 1:06:49Of course everything's been going well for them.
- 1:06:52They've won the close ones, they've come from behind, they've gotten great pitching, they've gotten the long ball.
- 1:06:58The ground ball to the hole, it's short and through to Lafayette.
- 1:07:01Schofield 2-3. Rudy Larrop to get the ball, brings it back in.
- 1:07:06So the Angels now with six hits against Jackson, although this one comes with two outs.
- 1:07:10And Brian Dowding will get a chance to swing.
- 1:07:13And he's 0-2, fouling the first in the opening inning, striking out looking to end the third.
- 1:07:19But you know the Angels, 23 games over 500 right now.
- 1:07:27They have a chance to do something no other Angel club has done.
- 1:07:32There's a fastball outside, check that inside, Dowding 1-0.
- 1:07:35And that something is win more than 93 games.
- 1:07:41They can get up there even beyond 95 if they stay hot.
- 1:07:45The 1-0 pitch and it's down low to an 0.
- 1:07:48The magic number for the Angels of course is 10, they'd like to drop it to 9,
- 1:07:52but for Gene Maugh, the magic number is different.
- 1:07:56The magic number is 7.
- 1:07:58He wants them to win 90 games and they're 7 away from doing that.
- 1:08:03Jackson's 2-0 to Dowding finds the inside edge, 2-1.
- 1:08:07Of course you've heard Gene's explanation for why he feels that's important.
- 1:08:10He just doesn't see the Rangers or any other team reaching that plateau other than the Angels.
- 1:08:16So they get there, he feels they're home for it.
- 1:08:20Schofield drives them through over to first base and you can understand what Jackson's thinking about.
- 1:08:25While Pettis gets all the headlines as far as the base stealing is concerned on the Angels,
- 1:08:29Schofield can steal his share too, he has 22.
- 1:08:33Only been caught about 4 times this year.
- 1:08:35Dowding lets them go by inside, 3-1.
- 1:08:381-0 Angels, bottom of the fifth.
- 1:08:402-0 Schofield at first.
- 1:08:42Brian Dowding at the plate, trying to find a way to break through on Danny Jackson.
- 1:08:51His pitch is high, ball four and the Angels have something building here in the fifth inning.
- 1:08:59With two outs, Schofield has single to left, Dowding has walked.
- 1:09:04And now here's the sixth day who has already homered in the ball game to establish the 1-0 lead.
- 1:09:10Now just a quick math work here.
- 1:09:13If the Angels win seven more games for Texas to tie the Angels,
- 1:09:18the Rangers have to win 14 of the last 16.
- 1:09:22And seven games with 19 to play doesn't seem like that tough of an assignment.
- 1:09:28The pitch to the Sensei is way high, 1-0.
- 1:09:31Well with each passing day, the calendar working against the Rangers
- 1:09:36and Ron's illustration there with the numbers certainly showing you why.
- 1:09:42Two on, two out, the Sensei whites.
- 1:09:44The 1-0 from Jackson is low and inside, making 2-0.
- 1:09:48Danny has already been stung by the long ball off the bat of the Sensei
- 1:09:52and he is pitching cautiously only to fall behind.
- 1:09:56That time call, his catcher Jim Sundberg comes out to the mound to have a visit with him.
- 1:10:01In the bullpen in left field for the Royals, there is some activity.
- 1:10:04We can't quite discern who it is, but we can see the ball flying around out there.
- 1:10:10And Sundberg comes back behind the dish.
- 1:10:13In the inning, Boon lined out the second.
- 1:10:15Pettis then struck out, but Schofield singles through the hole on the left side.
- 1:10:19Downing walks and now it's the Sensei with the count his way 2-0.
- 1:10:24The pitch from Jackson is way high and outside, ball three.
- 1:10:27It looked like he reached back for something extra there.
- 1:10:30Let him hit. Why not?
- 1:10:36He's the one man in your lineup, one of the couple who could break the game open with one swing.
- 1:10:42Jackson ready to pitch, but the Sensei is not ready to hit, so time call.
- 1:10:46Just as Jackson was about to unleash it.
- 1:10:491-0 Angels, bottom of the fifth.
- 1:10:51We're in the Chevy home run contest.
- 1:10:53And the Sensei with that home run potential.
- 1:10:56Schofield at second, Downing at first, 1-0 Angels.
- 1:10:59The 3-0 is on the inside corner, 3-1.
- 1:11:02So they may have given the Sensei the green light, but the pitch was not to his liking.
- 1:11:07It would be hard to tell whether or not he was because it was a tough pitch to handle.
- 1:11:14The 3-1 is a check swing and that's going to cost him a strike too.
- 1:11:17Doug started to move toward first base.
- 1:11:21But first base up are Joe with Merrill who's already drawn the ire of the Angels from a call last inning.
- 1:11:29Doesn't make the Sensei too happy as he brings up the right hand and it's 3-2.
- 1:11:36I think Doug would just soon hit anyway.
- 1:11:39The base on balls doesn't do anything for you.
- 1:11:43As we mentioned after his home run, he has 90 RBI.
- 1:11:48Seven shy of his career best, ten shy of the century mark.
- 1:11:52A plateau he has never reached.
- 1:11:55The 3-2, there go the runners and it's foul tipped into Sunberg, cloud strike three.
- 1:12:00And the Sensei is going to argue.
- 1:12:03He's going to argue that the ball missed the bat and he was on his way to first base.
- 1:12:08But play-doh player Jim Evans says, no, it hit the bat, you're out.
- 1:12:12And the inning is over.
- 1:12:14So while the Sensei argues, we can tell you we didn't have a winner in our Chevy home run contest.
- 1:12:20And our jackpot increases tomorrow to $325.
- 1:12:24And there will always be that chance for the big prize, a new Chevy Nova or S10 pickup if an Angel hits a grand slam.
- 1:12:31So here in the fifth for the Angels, no runs.
- 1:12:34One hit, no errors, they lead two and will head to the sixth inning.
- 1:12:39Still, Angels won and the Royals nothing.
- 1:12:42And if you're joining us late, this is of course the Royals visiting the Angels at Anaheim.
- 1:12:46Danny Jackson starting for the Royals, still pitching with a 10 and 10 record.
- 1:12:50And Don Sutton has started for the Angels and he is still doing his thing, 14 and 9 on the season.
- 1:12:56And in case you didn't hear the news, the Mets pretty well certifying.
- 1:13:00What most of us had concluded some time back have clinched the National East Division with a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:13:07Dwight Gooden pitching a six-hitter.
- 1:13:09Dave Magadon went three for four, giving the Mets 95 victories, more than the second place Phillies could achieve even by winning the rest of their games.
- 1:13:17There was a crowd of 47,823 cheering under a full moon.
- 1:13:22Gooden raised his record to 15 and 6.
- 1:13:25Dennis Eckersley took the loss.
- 1:13:27Dennis now 6 and 10 on the year and the Mets finally wrapped up a title they could have really formalized some five days ago when they started that series with the Phillies.
- 1:13:36Magadon, a late replacement for first baseman Keith Hernandez who is down with a virus,
- 1:13:40produced his first Major League RBI with third and fifth inning singles.
- 1:13:45Gooden lacking his best stuff in this game, but he struck out seven, walked four, and this is Dwight's 11th complete game of the season.
- 1:13:52The enthusiasm of the fans began building with nine outs to go, reached a crescendo with one out to go, and the fans began chanting,
- 1:13:59We're number one, we're number one, and so they are.
- 1:14:02Gooden struck out when he struck out eight, by the way.
- 1:14:05He retired Chico Walker for the last out.
- 1:14:07The crowd just went into a frenzy.
- 1:14:09Many of them had gone onto the field already in fair territory before the final out, and some 5,000 people were on the field as soon as second baseman Wally Bachman
- 1:14:18threw to first baseman Keith Hernandez for the final out, and that was it.
- 1:14:23No other National League East team has ever clinched the title that early.
- 1:14:27We'll tell you more about that at our next break.
- 1:14:29Let's get back.
- 1:14:31Here in the sixth inning, Willie Wilson leading it off against Sutton, one nothing angels. Wilson already up there with a count one and one. Sutton kicks and delivers again, and it popped up right around second base.
- 1:14:48Shortstop Dick Schofield calling for it, and he makes the catch.
- 1:14:52So just like that, a man is gone, and that'll bring up Lonnie Smith, who has flied to center and popped to second.
- 1:14:57Bomber Johnson.
- 1:15:12Lonnie Smith has been smoking the baseball, as I mentioned, 11 consecutive games in which he's hit.
- 1:15:18He takes a fastball high, 1-0.
- 1:15:21In fact, he is making a run at the 300 mark, nothing new for Lonnie Smith.
- 1:15:26Well, in the National League, he had several 300 years. In fact, his lifetime average in the senior circuit, close to 300.
- 1:15:33He swings and foul-tips one into Boone's glove, one and one.
- 1:15:36And he looked back on Lonnie Smith's track record.
- 1:15:39339 average at Philadelphia in 1980, 324 in 81.
- 1:15:46Only hit 257 last year with Kansas City, but much better than that this year, and it appears he's made the adjustment for the new league.
- 1:15:54The 1-1 pitch is a fastball high, 2-1.
- 1:15:57Ron, we had the bottom of the fifth inning end on an unusual note, a foul-tip call by Pletum Fire Jim Evans, who were strike three to end the inning.
- 1:16:06And DeSense argued vehemently, and he would think he would know if there had been a foul-tip.
- 1:16:11The pitch to Smith has pulled on the left field line foul, so it's even now 2-2.
- 1:16:17And it just seemed to me that that was unusual. Your thoughts on the way that inning ended?
- 1:16:21Well, normally if that ball hits the bat ever so slightly, you're going to feel it.
- 1:16:25The only thing I'm going on, I took a look at the replay, and Sundberg, the catcher, never hesitated.
- 1:16:30He just went flat on off toward the dugout.
- 1:16:32So apparently the ball did hit the bat, or at least Sundberg thought so, too.
- 1:16:38Here's the 2-2 on the way to Lonnie Smith.
- 1:16:41And a strike three call, big bending curve, and Sutton got it in there.
- 1:16:45Three strikeouts for him.
- 1:16:47Of course you can look at it another way, too, Ron. If you're the catcher and you hear, see right, three, get out of there.
- 1:16:52Don't wait to argue about it.
- 1:16:55But I think your point's well taken. Sundberg, at least you would have thought, might have hesitated, and he didn't.
- 1:17:00And there are times when that ball hits the glove in just a certain way, that it may sound like there's a little tick up there.
- 1:17:07Here's Rudy Law with two outs, and the pitch to him is away. One ball, no strikes. Rudy a left-hand swinger.
- 1:17:13The Totals in the ball game, while they are tipped the Angels' way.
- 1:17:19Not overpoweringly so. Law hits a pop fly in the shallow right-center field.
- 1:17:24Pettis, Hendrick, and Pollard are all there, and it's Gary Pettis to put the squeeze on it.
- 1:17:30So in the sixth inning, Don Sutton continues to roll. He's only allowed one hit. That was to Law back in the fourth.
- 1:17:35And we'll head to the bottom of the sixth. Angels won. Kansas City nothing.
- 1:17:39We have a little bit of confusion surrounding that had met Cubs game.
- 1:17:43We said that Dave Magadon replaced Keith Hernandez, who was supposed to be down with a virus.
- 1:17:49But then our copy said that Wally Backman threw the first baseman, Keith Hernandez, for the final out.
- 1:17:54So we're not quite sure if Keith was in that game or not. I'm sure he wanted to be for clinching the division.
- 1:17:59We'll see if we can check up on that and find out what was going on.
- 1:18:01We did mention that no other National League East team has ever clinched a title this early in the season.
- 1:18:07The 1972 Pirates wrapped it up on the 21st of September.
- 1:18:12They needed only 144 games, though, opposed to New York's 145.
- 1:18:16And with their third division title, the Mets earned the right, of course, to oppose the West Division champions in the National League playoffs.
- 1:18:22And we can assume that those will probably be the Astros.
- 1:18:26Larry King had a little comment the other night, Larry King on Mutual.
- 1:18:30He said it'll probably be harder for the Mets to get past the Astros than it would be for them to win the World Series.
- 1:18:37The really big obstacle is getting the pennant in the National League.
- 1:18:41And after that, it might just be anticlimactic. So we'll wait and see.
- 1:18:45The Astros could very well wind up taking the National.
- 1:18:49Dwight Gooden, as we mentioned, was the winning pitcher.
- 1:18:52It was kind of chilly in New York as we get into early fall, or late summer, really, I still officially, but early fall.
- 1:19:01And Gooden, they found him blowing on his hand a little bit to kind of warm it up.
- 1:19:06But he contended with base runners in almost every inning, but did win the game, and that's what's important.
- 1:19:12Bottom of the sixth inning at Anaheim Stadium. Good crowd on hand, good ballgame to go with it.
- 1:19:17One-nothing, the Angels lead. That home run by DeSensei back in the fourth inning still looming is the difference.
- 1:19:24Danny Jackson towing the rubber. He'll go to work against George Hendrick, who is one for two.
- 1:19:30Jackson cranks it up and delivers, and his first pitch of this inning is over for a strike called on one.
- 1:19:36The Angels trying to take yet another step toward that Western Division championship.
- 1:19:42The O-one pitch, and Hendrick waves at the breeze and doesn't get it on two.
- 1:19:49And without question, they have their fate in their own hands now.
- 1:19:53Jackson right back O-two, and Hendrick takes it away, one and two.
- 1:19:57As we mentioned, the home run, the big story tonight, that has been the only scoring blow of the game.
- 1:20:04And it would have figured that a home run would be prominent on this date, September 17th.
- 1:20:10The one-two pitch. It's a line drive in the right field, but Bo Jackson has a beat on it, and he comes on and makes the play.
- 1:20:16Before we tell you about the home run ball and this date in history, let's pause for station identification.
- 1:20:21This is the Angels Radio Network.
- 1:20:23Got a good game going, and hope you're enjoying it around the world, wherever you happen to be listening.
- 1:20:28And you are listening to it right here on the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 1:20:34Bobby Gritz stepping in here in the sixth inning, one-nothing Angels as Jackson misses outside, one and O.
- 1:20:42The Brewers of Anaheim.
- 1:20:53Gritz takes one on the outside corner to even things at one and one.
- 1:20:56Murielson on deck, Palador hoping for a chance in the hole.
- 1:20:59One-nothing Angels in the sixth.
- 1:21:02Jackson kicks and comes right back to Bobby in the dirt, and Sundberg knocks it down, two and one to Gritz.
- 1:21:09As we were saying before the station break there, this date in baseball history figures very prominently for one individual in particular, with reference to the home run ball.
- 1:21:20That man not in the lineup tonight for the Angels, but here nonetheless, Reggie Jackson.
- 1:21:24That ball is high to Gritz three and one, because on this date, September 17, 1984, Reggie Jackson hit his 500th career homer.
- 1:21:36Gritz waves at the breeze and doesn't get it, three and two.
- 1:21:39He hit it against the Royals, but Black was on the mound that day.
- 1:21:42And what made it such a special touch was that it was also on this date, 17 years before, that Reggie Jackson hit his first career home run, and he also did it here at the Big A.
- 1:21:53Gritz hits a line drive into left field, but Rudy Lohr goes back a step or two, then puts on the brakes and makes the catch, and Gritz is retired for route number two, and that will bring up Burleson.
- 1:22:03So Reggie, who has always had a flair for the dramatic, certainly put it all together.
- 1:22:08September 17, he hit his first home run at the Big A, and he hit his 500th home run on the same date, 17 years later.
- 1:22:24Pits to Burley is a fastball for a strike on one.
- 1:22:34Jackson right back to the plate, and Burleson swings and misses on two.
- 1:22:40That one.
- 1:22:43One-nothing. The angels leading. Jackson to the plate, and Burleson takes just inside one and two.
- 1:22:52You know, speaking of Reggie and the flair for the dramatic, I have a feeling he'll be hitting some dramatic home runs before this campaign is over.
- 1:23:01The one-two pitch is grounded foul, third base way, still one and two.
- 1:23:16Danny Jackson into the windup, and the one-two to Burleson has popped a foul below us here in the press area.
- 1:23:23So Burleson's still alive.
- 1:23:25Ron told you earlier that though he's hitting around 285, he's been fighting a slump lately.
- 1:23:32He's now three for his last 21. His next pitch is high, so two and two.
- 1:23:38But that gives you a good indication of how it's gone for Burleson.
- 1:23:42He's come down to 285, 286, and if he warms up again, he'll go back up near that 300 level. He's never hit over 300 in his career.
- 1:23:51The two-two pitch is high and tight, and it spins him out of there, so they count four.
- 1:23:56Two down, bases empty, bottom of the sixth, one nothing angel.
- 1:24:02As long as things stand the way they do, we'll be referring back to that fourth inning when Doug the Sensei provided a difference with a solo home run his 24th of the year.
- 1:24:12Burleson pulls a foul, third base side, and that kangaroos into the stands, and then skips back a few rows.
- 1:24:18Three and two remain.
- 1:24:22Outfield giving Burleson lots of room in left center. The infield pretty much straightaway.
- 1:24:29Danny Jackson nodding yes to Sundberg. Here's the full count offering.
- 1:24:32Brown ball hit on a big hop towards short. Bianca Lana waiting for it.
- 1:24:36Guns over the sights are in time, and the inning is over for the angels.
- 1:24:40So Jackson's still pitching well. He gets the side in order in the sixth.
- 1:24:43We'll go to the Sabbath when Ron returns with the score. Angels won, Royals nothing.
- 1:24:49Now this ABC News brief. We have a new Supreme Court Chief Justice, Senator Paul Tribble, announce the Senate's vote.
- 1:24:55On this vote there are 65 yeas and 33 nays. The nomination of William Rehnquist to be Chief Justice of the United States is confirmed.
- 1:25:03The Senate also has confirmed Antonin Scalia to take the seat being vacated by Rehnquist. That vote was 98 to nothing.
- 1:25:10The Mets have become the first team to clinch a spot in the major league playoffs. They beat the Cubs tonight in New York 4-2.
- 1:25:1625 Soviet UN diplomats are being kicked out of the US by the Reagan administration.
- 1:25:21They've got two weeks to get out, and US officials deny that this action has anything to do with the Soviet detention of US reporter Nicholas Danilov.
- 1:25:28No claims of responsibility yet for the latest bombing in Paris. A bomb today killed five people and injured more than 50 others.
- 1:25:35The same terrorists who say they planted five bombs in the French capital in 10 days say that they're going to start staging attacks in the US.
- 1:25:42From ABC News, I'm Marcia Slaughter.
- 1:25:45A little football news. The Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week have released running back Ernest Jackson.
- 1:25:50He'd run for 1,028 yards last season, but apparently didn't impress his new coach, Buddy Ryan, former defensive coordinator of course, of the Bears.
- 1:25:59Jackson was picked up by the Eagles from the Chargers for two draft picks in September of last year. He was Philadelphia's leading rusher last season,
- 1:26:07but Ryan and Jackson apparently didn't take to each other. Ryan criticized his blocking, his running, his pass catching abilities.
- 1:26:14Well, there wasn't much else to criticize, so Jackson is gone from the Eagles.
- 1:26:19Six innings have been played tonight here at Anaheim Stadium. Don Sutton and Danny Jackson putting on a pitching clinic.
- 1:26:26And right now the Eagles with the best of it leading 1-0. The only mistake, a fastball to DeSensei in the fourth inning,
- 1:26:33and Doug turned it around and sent it deep over the left field offense to provide the scoring.
- 1:26:38Sutton meanwhile has allowed just one base hit, that a single by Rudy Law, back in the fourth inning.
- 1:26:43And he goes to work now in the seventh against Jamie Quirk. And going to work again for us, take you along with a play-by-play.
- 1:26:49Here's Ron. Thank you very much. I guess that's my lead. I got to hold it, right? That's right.
- 1:26:52Well, you provided the lead. The least you can do is hold on to it now.
- 1:26:56Here's the first pitch to Quirk, and there's a curveball high and outside, ball one.
- 1:26:59Quirk is 0-2 in the game. He's bounced out to the pitcher and fired out to left field. Left hand hitter.
- 1:27:03Well, now then you have to win something, 1-0. And 2-1. Here's the 1-0 pitch. And it's just outside, the count is 2-0.
- 1:27:12I feel a little bit for Bob Rowe and his highlight package, though.
- 1:27:15It's going to be one shot. It's going to be short.
- 1:27:18And Bob, if you're listening, stretch it out the best you can. Yeah, make it live. Make it live.
- 1:27:23Here's the 2-0 pitch. And a loop toward center field could be trouble.
- 1:27:27Pettis coming on, and he's going to have to lose a ball for a base hit.
- 1:27:31So Quirk starts things here in the seventh inning with a blooper to center field. He's now 1-3.
- 1:27:36And that will bring up the second baseman, Frank White.
- 1:27:40Second baseman, Frank White.
- 1:27:46White this evening has popped up the short and popped up the second base.
- 1:27:50Sutton started the game by retiring the first 11.
- 1:27:55And then he set down 13 or 14 before getting up a base on ball.
- 1:28:02Here's a pitch to White, and it's just outside, ball one.
- 1:28:06You have to be careful with Frank White.
- 1:28:09When he started his career, he was really not a home run hitter.
- 1:28:12However, in the last two years, he started playing long ball.
- 1:28:15He has hit 19 home runs this year and driven in 79.
- 1:28:19There's a shot that is fouled down the left field line, and that evens up the count.
- 1:28:24And that's exactly what I mean right there.
- 1:28:26White had that big end of the bat out in front, and he hit it hard.
- 1:28:30And then he pulled it foul.
- 1:28:33Let's take a look at the last two years at about White in the home run.
- 1:28:43There's one that's a big bouncer to Gritch at first.
- 1:28:45He goes to second for the force out, and they do not return the throw.
- 1:28:49And so couldn't Bobby Gritch with a good play as White bounces one to Bobby at first base,
- 1:28:55and he forces Quirk at second.
- 1:28:58That is 3-6 in the putout.
- 1:29:00And that brings up Kevin Sacher.
- 1:29:03But just to give you an idea, last year, White hit 22 home runs.
- 1:29:07That is a career high for him, and he's hit 19 this year.
- 1:29:10And the RBIs by White, 79, that's a career high.
- 1:29:14He's having another good year.
- 1:29:18Here's Kevin Sacher, the first baseman stand again.
- 1:29:22Kevin, over one, he has lined out the short and then walked.
- 1:29:25So he is over one.
- 1:29:28Sutton stepping off the rubber.
- 1:29:31Sacher is hit in seven of the ten major league games in which he's played.
- 1:29:36Really does not have a position as of yet.
- 1:29:39Here's the first pitch, and it's a curveball outside for ball one.
- 1:29:42Not that he can't play, and not that he's a bad defensive player,
- 1:29:46it's just that right now in the scheme of things, he really does not have a set position to play.
- 1:29:52And there's a chance that maybe he'll be the left fielder next year.
- 1:29:55Maybe he'll play a little bit of first base, depending on how Steve Balboni counts.
- 1:29:58There's pitches outside, and the count is now two and up.
- 1:30:01Balboni hurt, by the way, along with George Brett.
- 1:30:06You take those two guys out of the lineup, and that's their home run and RBI men.
- 1:30:11And this team does not have anywhere near the intimidation factor that it has with those two guys, does it?
- 1:30:17Two-o pitch, he has swung on and popped up off of first base.
- 1:30:20Rich, over near the dugout, is waiting for it, and the ball goes just out of reach.
- 1:30:24It goes into the first row, and so the count is now two and one.
- 1:30:28On deck is Bo Jackson, angels lead it one to another.
- 1:30:35The difference in the ball game, Doug DeSensei's home run.
- 1:30:38DeSensei has 24 home runs on the year, that's tops in the team.
- 1:30:44Sutton staring down at Boone.
- 1:30:48There goes the runner, the pitcher, swung on and hit it to right field, giving ground to Hendrick.
- 1:30:53He's there, and he makes the catch, and White has to go back to first base.
- 1:30:57And so they had the hit and run on.
- 1:31:00And Sizer flies out to right field, that's out number two, and that brings up the right fielder, Bo Jackson.
- 1:31:10Now you recall last night, just about this time of the game, actually last night it was in the eighth inning.
- 1:31:17And right now it's in the seventh inning, but Jackson with a two run homer to right field to tie the game at five.
- 1:31:24And then the angels came right back and they won it, when Boone singled in to right field to drive in Devon White.
- 1:31:32So here he is, nothing but power standing in.
- 1:31:36And the first pitch is low and outside, ball one.
- 1:31:40Jackson is batting 3-13, two home runs, four runs driven in.
- 1:31:45He has hit in six of the eight major league games that he has played in.
- 1:31:50And there is not a point in any ballpark that he can't hit it out of.
- 1:31:54The 1-0 pitch, and Sutton starting to make the pitch, slip to the mound and stop and that's a ball.
- 1:32:01He started to make a pitch and then slipped.
- 1:32:05And now the tying run is in scoring position.
- 1:32:08But as you think it through just for a second, that is a very smart move by Don Sutton.
- 1:32:17Because he was in the middle of his wind up and something slipped and he had enough agility in his mind to stop.
- 1:32:25Because if he throws the pitch to Jackson and makes a bad pitch, Jackson can hit one out of here.
- 1:32:31And so Sutton stopping and now all he has to do, hopefully, is that is get Jackson out.
- 1:32:37But he did not want to make that one bad pitch if he had slipped out there in the mound.
- 1:32:42Here is the 1-0 pitch and it is blowing off.
- 1:32:45No, it is blowing inside. Once again it looks like Jim Evans is going to ring up a strike and the count is now 2-0.
- 1:32:51I have seen pitchers on the mound slip and end up throwing it right down the middle of the plate and have it cost them some runs.
- 1:33:01Sutton at the belt and the 2-0 pitch. He has swung on and missed for a strike, a fastball right in on the letters.
- 1:33:07And the count is 2-1. Sutton has struck out three in the game. He has 111 on the year.
- 1:33:21White with the lead at second base. Sutton checking him and the 2-1 pitch is a curveball, swung on and missed strike two.
- 1:33:33And that evens up the count at two balls and two strikes.
- 1:33:38Now Jackson stepping out, having a quick clubhouse meeting with himself.
- 1:33:45And now Bow stepping right back in.
- 1:33:50He does have holes. He is just a young man as you well know.
- 1:33:54But within time those holes will get smaller and smaller.
- 1:33:57Here is the 2-2 pitch and it is a curveball long outside. Full count now, 3-2.
- 1:34:08Three balls and two strikes. Jackson stepping out and going through that same thing again.
- 1:34:17Sutton staring down.
- 1:34:23Bowen flashing the sides. Jackson has struck out.
- 1:34:27Since coming up, we will give you that here in just a second.
- 1:34:30He has struck out nine times in 30 at bats.
- 1:34:35Sutton out with the sides and the 3-2 pitch is high inside. He walked in.
- 1:34:44Down to first base goes Jackson. That is the third base on balls.
- 1:34:50Issued by Sutton and Sundberg. The next scheduled hitter has been called back.
- 1:34:55Let's see who Mike Peraro goes to here.
- 1:35:00You have a guy sitting on the bench that wears number five.
- 1:35:03And if you know who I am talking about, if you are familiar with Kansas City, that is George Brett.
- 1:35:09He is going to be number three, George Orta coming out.
- 1:35:15And so it will be Orta batting in place of Jim Sundberg.
- 1:35:29Orta, a 283 hitter on the year.
- 1:35:33He has made eight home runs and driven in 44.
- 1:35:39And he will be batting for Sundberg.
- 1:35:41The only score in the game came back in the fourth inning when Doug DeSense hit a home run.
- 1:35:47That has been it so far. Kansas City has runners at first and second.
- 1:35:51Well, Bo Jackson and his Kansas City Royal teammates conclude their series with the Angels tomorrow night.
- 1:35:58And then at Chicago, Cleveland, and then the Texas Rangers all visiting right here at the Big A
- 1:36:01during that crucial final homestand.
- 1:36:04So don't forget to do your ticket shopping for those games coming up.
- 1:36:09First pitch is a curveball over for a strike.
- 1:36:11Also, we would like to remind you that the Indians play a twilight doubleheader Monday,
- 1:36:16starting at 5.35 right here at the Big A.
- 1:36:19That is to make up for that rainout game on this recent road trip in Cleveland.
- 1:36:23Here is the 0-1 pitch on the way.
- 1:36:25And it is a curveball hit between first and second.
- 1:36:27Paladar up with it and he goes to Grinch in time.
- 1:36:31And so the defense plays well against Sutton here in the inning.
- 1:36:34Mass Paladar comes up with a big play.
- 1:36:37And forward. Kansas City, no runs and a base hit. They lead 2, they stranded 5.
- 1:36:42And after 6-1-1, it remains. Angels on top, 1-0.
- 1:36:46All the other games going on, the White Sox leading Seattle 2-0.
- 1:36:50They're in the top of the seventh and in the National League.
- 1:36:52It's San Francisco leading San Diego 4-2.
- 1:36:55They're in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:36:57The Mets, of course, have clinched the National East.
- 1:36:59Finally, at long last, they were supposed to do it Friday,
- 1:37:02but better late than never by beating the Cubs 4-2.
- 1:37:05This division title is the third in Mets history.
- 1:37:08You'll remember back in that historic year of 1969,
- 1:37:12the amazing Mets in what may be the most amazing upset of all time in baseball,
- 1:37:17won the National League East, beat the Braves in the playoffs,
- 1:37:20finished off the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series,
- 1:37:22and that after a disastrous year in 1968.
- 1:37:26What a turnaround.
- 1:37:27In 1973, the Mets won the National East with an 82-79 record.
- 1:37:32That is the worst first place finish in the history of divisional play.
- 1:37:36They defeated the Cincinnati Reds for the National League pennant
- 1:37:38and then lost the World Series to the Oakland A's.
- 1:37:41They had a hard-fought series, went the full seven games.
- 1:37:44New York entered the league as an expansion club back some 24 years ago in 1962,
- 1:37:50and that year they compiled a very unenviable record, 40 wins, 120 losses.
- 1:37:57The worst mark, the worst in modern Major League history.
- 1:38:01The amazing Mets.
- 1:38:03Remember Marv Throneberry.
- 1:38:05Let's get back.
- 1:38:07One defensive change for the Kansas City Royals.
- 1:38:20Now behind the plate, Terry Bell will be doing the catching.
- 1:38:23He takes over for Sunberg.
- 1:38:25As we look around the infield and the outfield, no changes there.
- 1:38:28As Danny Jackson goes back for another inning of work,
- 1:38:31he'll be facing Gus Poudoe followed by Bob Bills and Gary Pettus.
- 1:38:34Angels lead it by a score of 1-0.
- 1:38:40Oh, and we mentioned to you the Texas Rangers won this afternoon up in the Bay Area.
- 1:38:45In fact, they sweep that series against Oakland.
- 1:38:49They won on a shutout 4-0 over Oakland.
- 1:38:53Correa and Williams combined for the shutout.
- 1:38:58Baltimore defeated the Yankees.
- 1:39:00Mattingly extended his hitting streak to 17 games with Baltimore winning it.
- 1:39:05Sheets in Dempsey with home runs.
- 1:39:07And the first pitch to Paladar is outside for ball one.
- 1:39:09Baltimore is snapping a five-game losing streak.
- 1:39:12Boston 4-1 over Milwaukee.
- 1:39:14It was the Cleveland Indians 5-2 over the Minnesota Twins.
- 1:39:18Detroit 8-6 over Toronto.
- 1:39:20Next pitch, misses for ball two.
- 1:39:23And one of the game in the American League still going on.
- 1:39:26Chicago at Seattle, no score after six innings of play.
- 1:39:29In the National League in the first of two games, Montreal 6-5 over Pittsburgh.
- 1:39:33Paladar takes one right around the letters for a style.
- 1:39:36And then Pittsburgh came back and won the nightcap 4-1.
- 1:39:38They split that middle matter.
- 1:39:40Houston 6-1 over Cincinnati.
- 1:39:44It was New York 4-2 over Chicago.
- 1:39:46The Mets clinch the National League East.
- 1:39:51Here's the 2-1 pitch by the left-hander.
- 1:39:53It is set high in the air, struck well into right center field.
- 1:39:56The man waiting for it is Wilson, and he makes the catch.
- 1:40:00And there's out number one.
- 1:40:17Excuse me, any big surprise that the Mets clinch behind Dwight Gooden?
- 1:40:21No. He has beaten the Cubbies eight straight times.
- 1:40:24I know that. There's one over for Bob Villan, the count is 0-1.
- 1:40:27Let's run out that scoreboard very quickly for you.
- 1:40:29St. Louis 8-5 over Philadelphia.
- 1:40:31Atlanta 4-1 over the Dodgers. They lose their fifth straight.
- 1:40:34And then in San Diego it is San Francisco 4-2 over the Padres.
- 1:40:39That's after 7-1-1 Gladden and Gwynn have hit home runs.
- 1:40:42There's a bouncer back up over the mound, back headed by White,
- 1:40:45who goes to first base hit time, and what a play by the second baseman, Frank White.
- 1:40:51An outstanding play, just a nab, boon by about a half a stride.
- 1:40:56A chopper back up over the mound, in which White had the backhand,
- 1:41:00and then jumped in the air, spun, and then threw accurately to Kevin Sainter at first base.
- 1:41:07And he didn't just get anybody. He got a man who scored from second base on a sacrifice fly.
- 1:41:12That's right. Flash, boon.
- 1:41:15So two men are gone, and that brings up Gary Pettis.
- 1:41:20I forgot to ask Booney about that on the pregame.
- 1:41:24There's a curveball high for ball one.
- 1:41:26He took a lot of ribbing, needless to say.
- 1:41:28Well, I should have given him a chance.
- 1:41:32How often do you score from second base in a fly ball the outfield?
- 1:41:351-0 pitch, his foul back out of play, and the count is now 1-1 to Gary.
- 1:41:39I bet that's the first time in his career. I would bet. I would venture to bet.
- 1:41:43I don't like to gamble too much.
- 1:41:48Pettis on the evening, one for three.
- 1:41:51He has hit in ten of the last twelve games. Here's the 1-1 pitch.
- 1:41:55And Pettis bounces one toward shortstop.
- 1:41:57Bianca Lana goes to the first baseman Sainter, and that'll do it for the Angels.
- 1:42:01A one, two, three, and he has seven in the row, by the way, set down by Danny Jackson.
- 1:42:06Make that, yeah, that's correct, that is seven in a row.
- 1:42:08No runs, no hits, no airs, and nobody left on base.
- 1:42:11Angels have stranded six, and after seven completed innings of play, Angels won Kansas City nothing.
- 1:42:17Lots of good college football matchups coming up this weekend, this Saturday,
- 1:42:21and one of the more interesting ones, Alabama and Florida.
- 1:42:25Alabama number four on both the UPI and AP polls.
- 1:42:29Florida number 13 on the AP poll, not on the UPI poll, not because Florida doesn't have a good team,
- 1:42:36but because the UPI rules, with the board of coaches voting,
- 1:42:39say that no team under probation can appear in the UPI rankings.
- 1:42:43But Florida, you know, would be somewhere in there, 12, 13, 14.
- 1:42:47Florida coach Galen Hall's main priority for his game against number four Alabama Saturday
- 1:42:52is, he says, giving standout quarterback Kerwin Bell some time to throw.
- 1:42:56You may remember that Bell was tacked six times in Florida's loss to Miami two weeks ago.
- 1:43:02Twenty-three to fifteen was that score.
- 1:43:04Hall says we're looking at several things to get Kerwin some more time.
- 1:43:07We've tried some quick passes this week in practice, so he doesn't have to take a long drop,
- 1:43:12and we've worked some on the shotgun formation.
- 1:43:14We've got to be able to get the ball downfield and keep Kerwin off the ground.
- 1:43:18Coach Hall says the Gators used their week off to put the Miami loss behind them,
- 1:43:22concentrate on preparing for Alabama this weekend, Florida's first Southeastern Conference opponent of the season.
- 1:43:28Hall says it was tough to lose to Miami, especially at home, but that game is behind us now.
- 1:43:33We've still got a tough schedule ahead of us,
- 1:43:35and of course the first game on that very tough schedule is this week against Alabama.
- 1:43:42Wonder Royale, batting for Biancolana, number 11.
- 1:43:46We go to the eighth inning and batting for Buddy Biancolana will be Hal McCray,
- 1:43:50and he'll be facing Don Sutton, who right now is leading by a score of one to nothing.
- 1:43:55And to tell you more about that, here's Al Connors.
- 1:43:57All right, Ron, the Angels indeed enjoying that one-nothing lead.
- 1:44:00Sutton going to work against McCray.
- 1:44:03Al McCray stepping in hitting 260 with six home runs and 36 runs batted in.
- 1:44:10So he's up there in place of Biancolana.
- 1:44:13Sutton working on a two-hitter. He's already posted one two-hitter this year.
- 1:44:18That was against the White Sox at Comiskey Park when he threw his 58th career shutout as well.
- 1:44:23There's a fastball that misses one and oh.
- 1:44:25In fact, if Sutton throws a shutout tonight, and that's still a possibility,
- 1:44:30he would move past Ed Walsh into ninth place all by himself on the all-time list of pitchers
- 1:44:36who have thrown shutouts in this game.
- 1:44:38There's one fouled away by McCray, one-on-one.
- 1:44:40Of course, the big leader, Walter Johnson, the big train, 113.
- 1:44:44Still seems incredible.
- 1:44:46Grover Cleveland Alexander second with 90.
- 1:44:49Kristy Matthewsson third with 83.
- 1:44:51Cy Young only had 77.
- 1:44:54You know, we talk about all those records and the things that would have a rough time breaking.
- 1:44:58That might be one right there, 113 career shutouts.
- 1:45:01Boy, that does seem unassailable.
- 1:45:03There's a pitch in there for a strike, one and two to McCray.
- 1:45:06Oh, and then you got Eddie Plank at 70.
- 1:45:08Warren Spahn with 63, along with Mordecai Brown.
- 1:45:12Tom Siever at 61, and M. Sack at 58.
- 1:45:16The one-two pitch is fouled back through the screen, and it's one and two.
- 1:45:20I mean, you have guys like Tom Siever and Sutton and Carlton and Nolan Ryan and guys like that.
- 1:45:26If they can only seem to have 55 or 60 somewhere in that category,
- 1:45:30what kind of a pitcher are you to have 113?
- 1:45:34You're in a higher league.
- 1:45:36I think you're Walter Johnson.
- 1:45:37Yeah, you're Walter Johnson. That's who you are.
- 1:45:40One ball, two strikes, the counter, McCray.
- 1:45:44Satin to the windup and the pitch, and his curveball misses low, 22.
- 1:45:49Well, it's been quite an night for none.
- 1:45:50The only base hits, Law with a single in the fourth, Quirk with a single in the seventh.
- 1:45:57So just a two-hitter. That's all.
- 1:46:00Sutton at 41, making it look easy.
- 1:46:04The two-two pitch to McCray is a high drive to deep left field,
- 1:46:08doubting looking up, but this ball is gone.
- 1:46:11Hal McCray with a pinch hit home run, and we're tied 1-1 here in the A.
- 1:46:17I think we might have jinxed on talking about the shutout and the two-hitter,
- 1:46:28and it all changes on one swing.
- 1:46:31So we're locked up in a tie.
- 1:46:32Willie Wilson will step in, and before he does, let's pause for station identification.
- 1:46:36This is the Angels Radio Network.
- 1:46:39This is the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 1:46:44So Don Sutton gives up a home run to McCray, and he's going to come out of the ballgame.
- 1:46:59Marcel Ackman has gone to the mound, and Sutton, who was working on a shutout,
- 1:47:04pitches seven very strong innings, and in the eighth, he makes a mistake, and he'll leave.
- 1:47:09He'll leave throwing a three-hitter, giving up just one run.
- 1:47:13He obviously has reached the magic plateau of pitches.
- 1:47:16Ron's checking on that now, and he will give way to Doug Corbett.
- 1:47:22The right-hander Doug Corbett coming on.
- 1:47:26He'll take over for Sutton.
- 1:47:27Angels Baseball coming to you from Anaheim Stadium with the score now.
- 1:47:31Angels won, and the Royals won.
- 1:47:34Well, they're still dancing in the streets in New York.
- 1:47:36By the way, Marty Bondaroff on his motor scooter heading up Hollywood Boulevard now
- 1:47:41and enjoying himself. He's the Duke of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine.
- 1:47:46Yes, he is.
- 1:47:47He was a little timid when he came from the jungles of the mid-East somewhere or another,
- 1:47:51but once he got used to things around in Hollywood, he is called Hollywood Marty now.
- 1:47:57Anyway, I'll be sitting in the rest of the way, and perhaps we'll have an extra inning ballgame.
- 1:48:01Thousands of people at Shea Stadium swarmed into the field at the New York Mets
- 1:48:05Clinch the National League East Division title on Wednesday with a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs,
- 1:48:11and their celebration caused a lot of damage.
- 1:48:14Chunks of turf were torn out of the infield and thrown into the stands,
- 1:48:18and there were other scars from the celebration in the outfield grass.
- 1:48:23During the game, taped video messages were shown to the fans as General Manager Frank Cashin,
- 1:48:29Manager Davy Johnson, and broadcaster Bob Murphy pleaded for an orderly celebration.
- 1:48:35Nevertheless, fans started pouring into the field even before 2nd baseman Wally Backman
- 1:48:40fielded the game's last grounder.
- 1:48:42Fans celebrated on the field for about 20 minutes after the game ended.
- 1:48:45Fifty minutes after it ended, the grounds crew was at work trying to get the field ready
- 1:48:50for Thursday afternoon's game.
- 1:48:54So they're still celebrating, and the Mets finally clinched it.
- 1:48:57Everybody knew that ever since the All-Star break, even before that, that they would eventually do just that.
- 1:49:03Aye.
- 1:49:24Doug Corba taking over now for Don Sutton who pitches a jam.
- 1:49:28Seven innings plus one batter.
- 1:49:31throws three hit baseball, but he leaves tied 1-1.
- 1:49:34And here's Willie Wilson against Corbett,
- 1:49:35and the first one is outside 1-0.
- 1:49:37You come to the ballpark as a pitcher
- 1:49:39and allow just three hits in a run,
- 1:49:41and you figure to win.
- 1:49:42But Danny Jackson has been equally tough,
- 1:49:45and so Sutton will not figure tonight.
- 1:49:47Corbett delivers to Wilson, and he's outside with it.
- 1:49:50So the count goes to 2-0.
- 1:49:541-1 tie here on the eighth.
- 1:49:57Sutton making his second bid for win number 15,
- 1:50:00and he pitched well enough to get it,
- 1:50:01but apparently it wasn't to be.
- 1:50:03Wilson pulls one foul, pass first and down the line,
- 1:50:06so the count's 2-1 to him.
- 1:50:07He's 0-3 tonight.
- 1:50:09We've told you that Sutton basically works
- 1:50:12on a hundred pitch limit,
- 1:50:14and tonight in seven innings plus one batter,
- 1:50:16he pitches
- 1:50:21outstanding baseball and throws exactly 100 pitches.
- 1:50:26And so they lift him with the ball game tight.
- 1:50:28The 2-1 to Smith is Luke Fowle off the third
- 1:50:31and out of play, 2-2.
- 1:50:33Did I say Smith?
- 1:50:34It's Willie Wilson, Smith on deck.
- 1:50:36So Doug Corbett is out there now,
- 1:50:38trying to get himself squared away.
- 1:50:41Overall, his numbers look pretty good.
- 1:50:43He's 3-2 in the IRA of 3.78 with nine saves,
- 1:50:47but most of his success was early in the year.
- 1:50:49The 2-2 pitch is swung on a miss,
- 1:50:51strike three, and he gets Willie Wilson.
- 1:50:55Corbett, though, in his last six outings
- 1:50:57has struggled mightily.
- 1:51:01In fact, in five of those six, he's given up home runs.
- 1:51:04Last time out against Cleveland in Cleveland,
- 1:51:08he didn't get anybody out facing two batters
- 1:51:10and they both got hit.
- 1:51:12But he comes on and he gets Willie Wilson
- 1:51:13to leave things off for him
- 1:51:16with a run already in in the eighth.
- 1:51:18Now it's Lonnie Smith in the first pitch
- 1:51:20and the first pitch is all the way to the backstop, 1-0.
- 1:51:36The 1-0 and Smith lays down a bunt.
- 1:51:37It's a dandy at the third base line.
- 1:51:40The sensei has to let it roll
- 1:51:41and then as it crosses the chalk,
- 1:51:43he touches it to make sure it stays foul.
- 1:51:45But if that one stays fair,
- 1:51:49Lonnie Smith is on with no problem.
- 1:51:50It was a beautiful bunt.
- 1:51:51One ball, one strike to Lonnie as he comes back.
- 1:52:17A 1-1 tie here in the eighth.
- 1:52:19Home runs are figured for both teams.
- 1:52:21For the Angels, it was to sensei back in the fourth
- 1:52:23and for the Royals, it's McCray in a pinched roll
- 1:52:26here in the eighth as Lonnie Smith fouls one off.
- 1:52:29So 1-2.
- 1:52:32It has been a beautiful pitching duel to watch
- 1:52:35because both Sutton and Jackson, outstanding.
- 1:52:40Corbett now trying to pick up the standard.
- 1:52:431-2, he has Lonnie Smith waiting.
- 1:52:46The next pitch is low on inside, 2-2.
- 1:52:48A run, six hits and an error for the Angels.
- 1:52:52One run, three hits and no errors for the Royals.
- 1:53:02The Corbett towing the rubber on the third base side.
- 1:53:06Now he straightens up.
- 1:53:08His 2-2 to Smith is down low, ball three.
- 1:53:12So he had a one and two, now the count's full.
- 1:53:15The sensei behind the bag, near the line at third.
- 1:53:19Schofield in a step or two at short.
- 1:53:22Lonnie Smith can run well.
- 1:53:24The 3-2 pitch is chopped wide of third.
- 1:53:27The sensei cuts the ball off in front of Schofield,
- 1:53:30goes on to Gritch for the out, two down.
- 1:53:37And that'll bring up Rudy Law, who's one for three.
- 1:53:41When this series began, the Royals were playing
- 1:53:43their best baseball of the year.
- 1:53:45They had won six out of seven until last night's defeat.
- 1:53:49But that was at home.
- 1:53:50Now they're trying to pick up that kind of a pace
- 1:53:53on the road and all year long they have struggled
- 1:53:55away from Kansas City.
- 1:53:58In fact, it has been a nightmare for them away from home.
- 1:54:01The pitch to Rudy is a little inside, wanna know.
- 1:54:04They're 26 and 43 overall away from Royal Stadium.
- 1:54:09And remember, this is defending world champs.
- 1:54:11The 1-0 pitch is over for a strike called one and one.
- 1:54:15Though it's not been a typical Kansas City year,
- 1:54:18they started slow and they have not gotten
- 1:54:20that second half kick that they usually
- 1:54:22are able to count on.
- 1:54:25The 1-1 from Corbett is pulled over first
- 1:54:27down the right midline and rolling into the corner.
- 1:54:30George Hendrick out to dig it out of the corner
- 1:54:33and Rudy Law goes into second with a double.
- 1:54:35So a two out, two base hit by Rudy Law
- 1:54:38and the Royals suddenly have the go ahead run
- 1:54:41in scoring position.
- 1:54:44And that'll bring up Jamie Quirk who is one for three.
- 1:54:49Quirk while he's hitting around 220.
- 1:54:53Over the last seven games has hit close to 400.
- 1:54:57And that's why you have to be careful with it.
- 1:54:59The 1-1 from Corbett is a little bit of a
- 1:55:03two out and that's why you have to be careful with it.
- 1:55:09So a meeting at the mound, Boone out to talk with Corbett
- 1:55:14and now he comes back to the home plate area.
- 1:55:17Quirk up there with a chance to give his club
- 1:55:19the lead for the first time tonight.
- 1:55:22Until this inning began, the Angels were on top
- 1:55:25but Hal McCray changed that with a pinch at home run.
- 1:55:29Quirk settling in, Corbett checks second in the pitch.
- 1:55:32There's a fast ball outside, 1-0.
- 1:55:38Angels won, Royals won, we're in the eighth.
- 1:55:41Corbett in some trouble now with two gone.
- 1:55:45Rudy Law stepping off at second base,
- 1:55:46Goffield honking them a little bit.
- 1:55:49The outfield playing Quirk to pull
- 1:55:50and the 1-0 delivery is down low, make it 2-0.
- 1:55:54It doesn't get any easier for Corbett if he loses Quirk
- 1:55:57because Frank White's on deck
- 1:55:59and of those in the lineup tonight for the Royals,
- 1:56:02he has the most home runs.
- 1:56:05Now they're gonna take the bat out of Quirk's hand
- 1:56:07and with first base open and him being left handed,
- 1:56:09they're gonna walk in intentionally.
- 1:56:12So there's ball three and ball four follows.
- 1:56:16So they're gonna play the percentages
- 1:56:17and even though White has the more ominous set of numbers,
- 1:56:23the fact that he's right-handed
- 1:56:24leaves the Angels to go after him rather than Quirk.
- 1:56:33So this is a big crossroads in the ball game right now.
- 1:56:36Corbett has two outs but he has two on behind him
- 1:56:39and he's facing the Royals' toughest hitter
- 1:56:43for power and runs batted in.
- 1:56:45And the pitch, ground ball hit toward short,
- 1:56:46Goffield has it, he goes the short way to Paladar
- 1:56:49for the fourth and the strategy works.
- 1:56:51So they walk Quirk, they get the white
- 1:56:56and they get the force to end the inning.
- 1:56:58Still, Kansas City gets even one run on two hits.
- 1:57:01The home run by McCry, the big one.
- 1:57:03There were no errors, two men left the board
- 1:57:06and after seven and a half at the big A,
- 1:57:08it's now Angels one and Kansas City one.
- 1:57:11Well, all dressed up with no place to go.
- 1:57:13That applies to ABC which finds itself
- 1:57:16with a Sunday baseball game of the week,
- 1:57:18right down the stretch of the major leagues
- 1:57:20but without a pennant race in which to focus.
- 1:57:23When ABC first got into baseball,
- 1:57:25it was strictly a Monday night affair
- 1:57:27so that the network could get a slice of the postseason pie.
- 1:57:31ABC was willing to sacrifice poor summer ratings
- 1:57:34for a crack at the baseball world
- 1:57:37but either the league championship series
- 1:57:39or maybe the big advertising rating
- 1:57:41Grand Slam the World Series.
- 1:57:42Situation was modified when baseball allowed ABC
- 1:57:45to telecast a few late September Sunday games.
- 1:57:48ABC executives believe that even going up
- 1:57:51against the mighty National Football League on CBS and ABC,
- 1:57:55the network could fare no worse
- 1:57:57with a game between contenders
- 1:57:59than it was doing on the generally low rated
- 1:58:01Monday night baseball games.
- 1:58:02Well, the plan to work well,
- 1:58:04ABC telecast the final game of the 1982 season.
- 1:58:07Baltimore and Milwaukee with Don Sutton and Jim Palmer
- 1:58:10vying for the American League East crown.
- 1:58:12The network also had some exciting contests last year
- 1:58:15when the eventual nationally championed
- 1:58:17St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets
- 1:58:19were dueling down to the wire.
- 1:58:21But this year's a different story.
- 1:58:22The Mets already always a lucrative draw
- 1:58:25because of the large New York market
- 1:58:27ended the National League East race seemingly
- 1:58:28before Memorial Day and of course on Wednesday clinched it.
- 1:58:32Scratch the National League East
- 1:58:33from the potential Sunday ABC telecast.
- 1:58:35National League West seem to be
- 1:58:37preferring a race between Houston and Cincinnati.
- 1:58:39Exactly your two major markets.
- 1:58:41Another tight ball game.
- 1:58:42It's going to be night after night.
- 1:58:43They may be involved in a scrape.
- 1:58:45And they're going to have to try
- 1:58:47and come up with the magic again.
- 1:58:49Here in the eighth inning,
- 1:58:50Dick Schofield will step in.
- 1:58:51He's two for three as Jackson goes to work.
- 1:58:56Downing and Descente will be coming up next.
- 1:58:59And the next pitch is just inside.
- 1:59:01Does Schofield want to know?
- 1:59:04The Angels on a roll.
- 1:59:05There's no question about it.
- 1:59:06They've had so many things go their way
- 1:59:09and they just want to keep it moving
- 1:59:11in the right direction.
- 1:59:12Schofield grounds one back to the middle
- 1:59:13and Descente field, he has his third hit of the night.
- 1:59:16And the Angels have the potential go ahead run on base.
- 1:59:20Now we'll see what Gene Mark chooses to do with Downing.
- 1:59:23Would he have him sacrifice?
- 1:59:26Ryan doesn't do that very often,
- 1:59:27but every once in a while he might.
- 1:59:30In fact, checking Downing statistics this year,
- 1:59:34he has one sacrifice on the season, just one.
- 1:59:39But you know, Gene likes little ball
- 1:59:40and with the ball game up for grabs,
- 1:59:42we'll see if he asks Downing to come through
- 1:59:44with another sacrifice.
- 1:59:48The shortstop for the Royals, Drake Meyer,
- 1:59:50taking over for Bianca Lana,
- 1:59:51who was lifted for the pinch hitter, McCray.
- 1:59:54They tied the game with the homer.
- 1:59:56So make the change in your scoreboard.
- 1:59:59Jackson meanwhile will go to first base.
- 2:00:01Schofield is back, Dick with those 22 pence
- 2:00:03to match the number on his jersey.
- 2:00:15And he fouls it up the first base line.
- 2:00:180-1.
- 2:00:23Well, Ryan doesn't get a chance to bunt very often,
- 2:00:28but it appears that this will be one of those rare times.
- 2:00:32At least they had him trying on the first bit.
- 2:00:34You know, it's not that manager Gene Mox
- 2:00:36does not think that Downing can get a base hit
- 2:00:38off of Danny Jackson.
- 2:00:40It's just that he thinks that Doug Desense can.
- 2:00:44And you give Desense a chance, and Hendrick after that.
- 2:00:48If you can move Schofield up, go to first base
- 2:00:50and Dick is back again.
- 2:00:52Quirk, in on the grass at third by several strides.
- 2:00:56And he's got him the line.
- 2:00:58The way Downing gets the ball,
- 2:00:59that's a dangerous position to be in if he doesn't bunt.
- 2:01:03Jackson ready, the strike one,
- 2:01:04and Brian's around to bunt again, lays it down.
- 2:01:07First base side, down again at his side too,
- 2:01:09and his only play is the white covering in time.
- 2:01:12And the sacrifice is executed perfectly.
- 2:01:15So the fans here at the big A,
- 2:01:17knowing that Downing doesn't do that often,
- 2:01:19applauding the effort here.
- 2:01:22So Gene Mox getting the right kind of out from Downing,
- 2:01:24and now the question is, can they make it pay off?
- 2:01:28Schofield's in position, a one-one tie here in the eighth,
- 2:01:31and Baxter Sensei, who has carried the attack
- 2:01:34so many times the second half of the year,
- 2:01:37is going to be stepping in.
- 2:01:39Before he does though, Mike Ferraro's going to the mouth,
- 2:01:42and he's gonna lift Danny Jackson.
- 2:01:45So the young left-hander, who has pitted very well,
- 2:01:48much as Don Sutton did, is going to leave it to the bullpen
- 2:01:52to try and keep the angels from scoring in this inning.
- 2:01:56And we're waiting now for the bullpen gate to swing open
- 2:01:58and see who comes out.
- 2:02:03We would suspect Farr, Steve Farr,
- 2:02:06and that appears who it's going to be.
- 2:02:09So he's gonna take over for Jackson Angels Baseball,
- 2:02:11coming to you from the big A with the score.
- 2:02:14Angels won, Royals won.
- 2:02:17Well, getting back to that situation ABC has
- 2:02:19with the teams that have already sewed things up,
- 2:02:22just about sewed it up, the Mets did it on Wednesday,
- 2:02:25and the others are right behind.
- 2:02:27All right, Hender, Steve Farr loosens up on the mound.
- 2:02:30We can keep you informed as to all the prizes
- 2:02:33that are building for Fan Appreciation Day.
- 2:02:36On September 28th, a bowling ball and bag from Brunswick
- 2:02:39will be among those given away.
- 2:02:40Sunday, Champagne Brunch at the Summer Tree Restaurant
- 2:02:43at the Emerald Avanna.
- 2:02:49Okay, while we have a break in the action,
- 2:02:50let's look at some final scores in the National League.
- 2:02:52Montreal beat Pittsburgh six to five
- 2:02:55in the first of a double header.
- 2:02:56Pittsburgh even things up in the second game,
- 2:02:58winning four to one.
- 2:02:59In single-action, Houston defeated Cincinnati
- 2:03:01by a score of six to one,
- 2:03:03and it was the Cardinals over the Phillies eight to five.
- 2:03:08Well, the battle lines have been drawn.
- 2:03:10Steve Farr summoned for the blue pen
- 2:03:12to try and put out the fire here in the eighth inning.
- 2:03:15A one-one tie, DeSensei steps in, trying to change it.
- 2:03:21Farr ready at the bout,
- 2:03:22and the pitch, DeSensei takes the breaking ball in there
- 2:03:25for a strike on one.
- 2:03:26With Dan Quisenberry having an off year,
- 2:03:29Steve Farr has filled much of the void
- 2:03:32for the Royals this year,
- 2:03:33as he has pitched very well in a short relief role
- 2:03:36for them this season.
- 2:03:37He's eight and four, and he already have 2.74.
- 2:03:40The pitch to Dug over again, strike two.
- 2:03:43And Dug backs away and takes a walk around home plate.
- 2:03:48Farr also with eight saves,
- 2:03:50and he has some impressive numbers
- 2:03:52because in 108 innings so far this year,
- 2:03:55he's given up just 86 hits.
- 2:03:57That's a very good ratio.
- 2:03:58He's had good control too.
- 2:04:00He's walked only 36 men during that 108 innings,
- 2:04:04and he struck out 82.
- 2:04:07Well, he's been tough on just about everybody.
- 2:04:10He asked DeSensei, no balls, two strikes.
- 2:04:12The pitch is a fastball high, one and two.
- 2:04:17Farr, a year ago,
- 2:04:19split his time between the Royal AAA affiliate in Omaha
- 2:04:25and the Royals, but this year he's become a major cog
- 2:04:28in their short bullpen.
- 2:04:32DeSensei, waiting one and two.
- 2:04:34The Angels trying to regain the lead here in the eighth.
- 2:04:37Schofield at second with one out.
- 2:04:40Lots of room in right center for DeSensei,
- 2:04:41and the one-two pitch is a fastball just inside.
- 2:04:45DeSensei, two and two.
- 2:04:49Doug was moving away from the pitch,
- 2:04:51but it wasn't that far off the plate.
- 2:04:58Two and two to count.
- 2:05:00DeSensei planting the back foot, now steps in.
- 2:05:03The crowd trying to help out in the background.
- 2:05:06Schofield being hawked by White, and the pitch.
- 2:05:08Check swing, did he go around?
- 2:05:10They appealed her first.
- 2:05:11No, he did not.
- 2:05:12Three and two to Doug.
- 2:05:15On deck, George Hendricks.
- 2:05:20Quirk, deep and near the line at third.
- 2:05:24Farr, a step or two toward the hole at short,
- 2:05:26and out to the Rudy Law on left is deep and near the corner.
- 2:05:33The three to DeSensei.
- 2:05:34It's a ground ball to third, down to get it is Quirk.
- 2:05:37He overhands, the sights are in time,
- 2:05:39and DeSensei's retired.
- 2:05:41And all the while, Schofield has to hold his tacket.
- 2:05:45So Jamie Quirk went down on one knee
- 2:05:47to make sure that ball didn't get through him.
- 2:05:50And the play, five to three.
- 2:05:55So two down, George Hendricks due up,
- 2:05:58but he will not bat now that a right-hander
- 2:06:00has entered the game.
- 2:06:01Instead, Gene Mark goes to his bench,
- 2:06:03and Rupert Jones will be sent into the breach.
- 2:06:06And now it's Rupert Jones' turn.
- 2:06:13Hendricks was one for three while he was in there,
- 2:06:16and now it's Rupert Jones' turn.
- 2:06:30So Rupert swinging the weight at bat,
- 2:06:32now putting some prime power on the handle,
- 2:06:35he's going to swing the ball like that.
- 2:06:37For sure, Rupert will stay in there.
- 2:06:39He does indeed pose at bat for two seconds.
- 2:06:44He tells he needs a sudden run,
- 2:06:44and he goes and drives in.
- 2:06:46He runs, the tagline is,
- 2:06:48then pull,
- 2:06:53fully loaded by the opening,
- 2:06:54four serves,
- 2:06:56end of base.
- 2:06:57So the roll goes to Schofield,
- 2:06:59for the fourth interval.
- 2:07:01But for now, all right,
- 2:07:03the roll has been through,
- 2:07:05And as he does with first base open, Terry Bell of the catcher will put up the free pass
- 2:07:14sign and they'll take the bat out of Rupert's hands and ask Bobby Gritch to step in there.
- 2:07:22And Bobby looking into the dugout as if to say, skip, am I going to bat or are you going
- 2:07:28to send up another pinch hitter?
- 2:07:30So ball three has been issued, ball four will follow.
- 2:07:33So Mike Ferraro, the manager, acting manager for the Royals, is playing his part.
- 2:07:40He's going to make Dean Mark make a move and stepping out of the dugout to take over for
- 2:07:45Gritch as Wally joins him.
- 2:07:48And now just as an added note for you, the Angels have been involved in five of the last
- 2:07:55six games, have been one-run games.
- 2:07:57The Angels have won four of those and the other one was a two-run ball game.
- 2:08:01So the Angels continue to play well in those one-run contests.
- 2:08:05And their overall record is what, 27-13, 27-12, 27-12 and that's a very impressive mark indeed.
- 2:08:14Now the joiner has been announced to the crowd, Aptocht Ferraro from the Royals dugout and
- 2:08:21he's going to the mound and that suggests he's making a change and that he'll bring
- 2:08:25in a left-hander to face Wally.
- 2:08:27And that's what's going to happen.
- 2:08:31So the chant is going up, Wally, Wally, but they'll have to wait to see what joiner can
- 2:08:37do as Ferraro is going to play another card in his deck.
- 2:08:42It's a one-one tie, bottom of the A, and the ballgame may well be on the line and Ferraro
- 2:08:48is pulling out the stops as a result.
- 2:08:56Brad Black, who we referred to earlier in our broadcast, having on this date in 84 served
- 2:09:02up Reggie's 500th career home run.
- 2:09:05Black coming on now, not as a starter as he was then but as a reliever.
- 2:09:09So he takes over, Angels baseball coming to you from the big A with the score.
- 2:09:13Angels won and the Royals won.
- 2:09:16Again going over that game between the New York Mets at home at Shea Stadium and they're
- 2:09:21clinching the East Division title of the National against the Cubs.
- 2:09:25They certified what others had long ago conceded that they would do that long before the season's
- 2:09:30over.
- 2:09:31Dwight Gooden pitched a six-hitter.
- 2:09:33Dave Madigan went three for four giving the Mets 95 victories, more than the second place
- 2:09:39Phillies could achieve even by winning the rest of their games.
- 2:09:41With a crowd of 47,823 cheering under a full moon, Gooden raised his record to 15-6.
- 2:09:49Dennis Zechersley now 6-10 took the loss.
- 2:09:52The Mets finally wrapped up a title they could have formalized five days ago.
- 2:09:57Nagadin, a late replacement for virus-ridden first baseman Keith Hernandez produced his
- 2:10:02first Major League RBI with third and fifth inning singles.
- 2:10:06Gooden lacked his best stuff but struck out seven and walked four in his 11th complete
- 2:10:11game of the season.
- 2:10:13So left-hander Bud Black has entered this evening's drama and as he does he has some
- 2:10:21pretty good numbers too though he's five and seven as everyone averaged 3.35.
- 2:10:25He's making his 51st appearance and his 47th as a reliever.
- 2:10:31He has seven saves so he and Favre combined for 15.
- 2:10:34In 105 innings he's given up 89 hits.
- 2:10:37That's a good ratio right there.
- 2:10:38And he's walked 36 while striking out 61.
- 2:10:41So Bud Black loosening up.
- 2:10:43The Angels with two on, two out here on the 8.
- 2:10:47And Wally Joyner do up the pinch hit for Grinch.
- 2:10:52Ten more games on his final home stand and you can still order your tickets.
- 2:10:56Rod brought up an interesting point during the break.
- 2:11:15With all of the changes that have gone on in this inning.
- 2:11:18Favre was brought on.
- 2:11:20He got the 10 save.
- 2:11:23Hendrick was lifted for a pinch hitter Rupert Jones.
- 2:11:26Grinch is lifted for a pinch hitter Wally Joyner.
- 2:11:30Favre gives way to Black and so what has happened is that Mike Ferraro has brought in a right
- 2:11:36hander and in the process he has gotten rid of a couple of right handed hitters in the
- 2:11:43Angel attack, Hendrick and Grinch.
- 2:11:45And now he has another left hander on the mat and it's Lefty against Lefty and at least
- 2:11:50percentage wise it would appear Kansas City with the edge.
- 2:11:54But that's assuming that Black is facing the average left hand hitter.
- 2:11:58Joyner has been anything but that all year.
- 2:12:00He's sitting 296 as he steps in.
- 2:12:02Two on, two out.
- 2:12:05A one one tie on the 8 and Black delivers a fast ball that's low.
- 2:12:08Want to know?
- 2:12:10So part of the fun of this time of the year is watching the virtual chess game between
- 2:12:18the managers as they try to orchestrate their pieces to best advantage.
- 2:12:22The 1-0 and Joyner takes in there for a strike and he was bending away from that one.
- 2:12:26One and one.
- 2:12:27One run, seven hits and an air for the Angels.
- 2:12:31One run, four hits and no air for the Royals.
- 2:12:33Black, fast ball, slider pitcher and he has emerged as a good one out of the fence.
- 2:12:39He takes a glance at the runners.
- 2:12:41The 1-1 to Joyner.
- 2:12:42Side armor, grounded toward the right side.
- 2:12:44Backhanded by White.
- 2:12:45He overhands to Siteser in time and the inning is over.
- 2:12:50Ferraro apparently makes all the right moves as the manager for the Royals and the Angels
- 2:12:56are denied.
- 2:12:57No run.
- 2:12:58One hit, no air.
- 2:13:00Two men left on base and we're going to the ninth locked up in a one-one tie.
- 2:13:05In the National League at the Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego that game is again that
- 2:13:09final score in the American League.
- 2:13:11The Pale Hose Three and the Seattle Mariners nothing.
- 2:13:14As we go to the ninth inning a one-one tie.
- 2:13:17Let's pause for station identification.
- 2:13:19This is the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 2:13:40Doc Corbett concluding his warm-ups as we go to the ninth inning.
- 2:13:43The sixth, seventh and eighth men will be coming up for the Royals and that means Siteser,
- 2:13:47Bo Jackson and Terry Bell assuming no substitutions for manager Mike Ferraro and Siteser will indeed
- 2:13:54come up to start things.
- 2:13:55The two starting pitchers gone now.
- 2:13:58Sutton and Jackson both pitched well.
- 2:14:01Sutton going seven innings giving up three hits and a run and the run came in on the
- 2:14:05home run by McCryde.
- 2:14:07Jackson went seven in the third, gave up seven hits in one run and that came on a home run
- 2:14:11by the Sensei.
- 2:14:12So we have another tight ball game and the Angels certainly have been in their share
- 2:14:16lately.
- 2:14:19Siteser 0 for 2 and a 1.
- 2:14:23Corbett ready to go and the first pitch is swung on a top foul at the plate on one.
- 2:14:28In the key games elsewhere in baseball tonight, Boston took a giant step toward winning that
- 2:14:34American League East Division Championship.
- 2:14:36They beat Milwaukee 4 to 1 behind oil Ken Boyd while both Toronto and New York were losing.
- 2:14:42The strike won and that's over but low, 1 and 1 to Siteser.
- 2:14:46So that means Boston has its magic number reduced to seven.
- 2:14:53And they have a big ten game lead in the East.
- 2:14:57There's a fastball outside to Siteser, 2 and 1.
- 2:15:01Speaking of the division of leaders, in the National League East, New York won their ball
- 2:15:05game over Chicago behind Dwight Gooden and they clinched the Eastern Division Championship
- 2:15:10there.
- 2:15:11Congratulations to the men.
- 2:15:12The next one to Siteser has popped into the air.
- 2:15:15Shadow left center fielder, Pettis and Downing converging and it's Pettis who makes the catch.
- 2:15:21And that will bring up Roach Jackson.
- 2:15:23The Angels defensively here in the ninth.
- 2:15:25A couple of changes.
- 2:15:26Wally Joyner who pitched it for Bobby Gritch in the eighth inning staying in there at first
- 2:15:33base.
- 2:15:34And Rupert Jones who did much the same for George Hendrick now in right field for him.
- 2:15:39So here's Bo Jackson who in a similar situation last night hit a home run to the opposite
- 2:15:50field to momentarily give the Royals a tie.
- 2:15:53And the Angels subsequently won it in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:15:58And here's Jackson who's already earned the respect of the opposition after a very brief
- 2:16:02stay in the big leagues.
- 2:16:04Corbett ready and now he'll deliver.
- 2:16:07And the first pitch to Bo Jackson is a fastball low.
- 2:16:10I want to know.
- 2:16:11And while Jackson is a threat for the long ball certainly, he is a threat also for the
- 2:16:17base hit.
- 2:16:19Even an infield base hit.
- 2:16:20And the Angels have the left side of the infield shortened up on him.
- 2:16:23The next pitch is swung on a miss and he was trying for the home run right there.
- 2:16:28He was thinking downtown.
- 2:16:29Big cut, big miss.
- 2:16:32One ball, one strike to him.
- 2:16:34The Angels with the infield in on the left side and you can understand the thinking of
- 2:16:37Gene Mark if Jackson chops one on the ground with his feet he's going to beat it out unless
- 2:16:43you play in a little bit.
- 2:16:44He already has five infield hits.
- 2:16:46A point well taken.
- 2:16:48Here's the one-one Jackson and it's just inside.
- 2:16:50So while the left side is in, the right side is at normal depth.
- 2:16:55Maybe even a little back as far as joiners concerned.
- 2:16:57He's almost on the rim at first.
- 2:16:59So an interesting alignment and I would guess that that would be the reason why would you
- 2:17:02think of any other that would make sense.
- 2:17:05The Angels in essence showing respect for his speed as well as his power.
- 2:17:10The two-one from Corbett, chopper towards short, cut off by the sensei.
- 2:17:14He throws the first in time.
- 2:17:16Well the Angels had Jackson to pick it out there and the defense perfectly set up for
- 2:17:21him.
- 2:17:22So two down and that'll bring up Terry Bell, a young catcher up from the minor leagues.
- 2:17:30Bell acquired by the Mariners in exchange for pitcher Mike Kuzmin back in May hit 235
- 2:17:38down in the minors this year at the double-ed level with no home runs, 15 RBI.
- 2:17:45The first one from Corbett swung on a miss, going one.
- 2:17:52A one-one tie, we're in the ninth.
- 2:17:54Two out, nobody on.
- 2:17:55Terry Bell at the plate.
- 2:17:57He does not have a big league hit yet.
- 2:18:00The pitch to him is over for a strike on two.
- 2:18:04Bell in fact getting his first chance at a big league at bat.
- 2:18:10He walked once in a previous plate appearance but that's it.
- 2:18:14The O2, the ground ball to short, Schofield to his right, gloves it, sidearm to join her
- 2:18:20in time and the ninth inning is in the book.
- 2:18:23Doug Corbett has pitted well in relief for two innings and that may be a good sign for
- 2:18:28the future.
- 2:18:29So the Royals gone in order in the ninth, we'll go to the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:18:34Burlson, Paladol, and Boone are due up with the score.
- 2:18:37Angels won, Royals won.
- 2:18:39Stalled Diger's ace Fernando Valenzuela's bed to become the National League's first
- 2:18:4420-game winner.
- 2:18:51Bottom of the ninth inning here at Anaheim Stadium.
- 2:18:54The Angels and the Royals locked up in a 1-1 tie and the Halos who have come up with so
- 2:18:59much magic in the late innings, asked to do it again.
- 2:19:03Bud Black though, trying to send it into extra innings.
- 2:19:07He has concluded his warm-ups.
- 2:19:09The throw has gone down to second base and we're just about ready for this ninth inning
- 2:19:13to unfold.
- 2:19:15This crowd is some 27,067, not going anywhere, not with the way the Angels have been playing
- 2:19:20lately.
- 2:19:21And they're hopeful that tonight again they'll be able to go home celebrating a late-inning
- 2:19:26rally for the Angels.
- 2:19:28Rick Burlson trying to do the honors to start it here.
- 2:19:31He is 0 for 2 tonight.
- 2:19:33Quirk, inside the bag near the line at third.
- 2:19:36Black delivers a fastball that's tied away 1-0.
- 2:19:40Seitzer at first base, behind the bag, he's near the line there too as they protect against
- 2:19:47the extra base hit.
- 2:19:50The 1-0 pitch and that's a change over nicely, 1-1 to Burley.
- 2:19:54Checking the outfield alignment.
- 2:19:57They are swung around slightly toward right for Burlson, fairly good-sized hole to shoot
- 2:20:01out in the alley and left.
- 2:20:03The 1-1 to Burlson is swung on, popped in the air in the shallow left-center field.
- 2:20:08Willie Wilson coming on, Lonnie Smith is there too and it's...
- 2:20:12Lonnie Smith, correction, Rudy Law makes the catch.
- 2:20:15Lonnie Smith, assuming a DH roll tonight and it's law on left.
- 2:20:21Second baseman, Gus Polidor.
- 2:20:25So 1-0-Y and Gus Polidor steps in.
- 2:20:27He is 0 for 3.
- 2:20:30He had two hits last night.
- 2:20:32In fact, he's had a couple of two-hit performances since his recall.
- 2:20:36He has not been an easy out although he's hit list this evening.
- 2:20:39Now, Wigwagon assigns, Black into his line.
- 2:20:47The first one to Polidor is a fastball outside, 1-0.
- 2:20:51The Angels have played a lot of extra in games lately.
- 2:20:54Remember on the road trip they played one in Cleveland and two in Chicago.
- 2:21:00Here's the 1-0 pitch to Black and it swung on and fell back, 1-1.
- 2:21:05And the Angels would like to win at regulation here, but unless they can get something going,
- 2:21:11next innings would be in the offing.
- 2:21:18The Angels, 6-5 in extra innings and Kansas City, 6-9.
- 2:21:23The 1-1 to Polidor, change over again, making 1-2.
- 2:21:30The Angel magic number is 10.
- 2:21:33All the other divisional leaders in baseball tonight won and dropped there the notch or more.
- 2:21:40And the Angels would like to do the same.
- 2:21:42The 1-2 pitch to Polidor and there's a broken back ground ball slowly passed them out towards second.
- 2:21:47White has it and goes to first in time.
- 2:21:50There are two down and Bud Black sprawled out on the ground watching that play.
- 2:21:55He tried to flag down the little roller and then fell to the turn, but he appears to be okay.
- 2:22:02So two up, two down in the ninth inning and Bob Boone will step up.
- 2:22:11Bob is 0-3 tonight, but that's deceiving because he might well have had two hits.
- 2:22:18After hitting back to the box in the third, he lined the second and the fifth
- 2:22:23and then hit a big chopper over the mound behind second in the seventh inning.
- 2:22:27Frank White made a nice play on him.
- 2:22:30Black sends it home and a fastball is high.
- 2:22:32What a no.
- 2:22:35Angels won and the Royals won.
- 2:22:37Bottom of the ninth inning here at the stadium.
- 2:22:39The sensei homered to get the Angels on the board in the fourth.
- 2:22:42McCray with a pinch hit blast in the A.
- 2:22:45Fastball is high to Boone, 2-0.
- 2:22:48So both teams have scored with the long ball
- 2:22:54and the pitching really has been outstanding tonight.
- 2:22:57Black's taken off a couple of signs. Here's the 2-0 delivery to Boone.
- 2:23:01And it's tied away, ball three.
- 2:23:02But you know the fact that the two teams have put on a pitching clinic tonight,
- 2:23:06that really isn't that surprising because entering this series,
- 2:23:10these two teams are the top two in terms of pitching in the American League.
- 2:23:14Kansas City with a staff ERA at 3.82.
- 2:23:17The Angels right behind at 3.88.
- 2:23:20Boone takes one in there for a strike, make it 3-1.
- 2:23:24Although Kansas City would tell you though we're leading the league in ERA,
- 2:23:28it has not been a dominating type performance.
- 2:23:30They've had their problems.
- 2:23:32The 3-1 to Boone.
- 2:23:34Popped up, foul ground, first base side.
- 2:23:36Coming over for the ball is Teicher, but he's going to run out of room
- 2:23:39as it goes back into the crowd about five rows.
- 2:23:423-2, the count to Boone.
- 2:23:50Come on out in the finale of the series.
- 2:23:54Mike Witt, 17-8, goes against Dennis Leonard, 8-11.
- 2:23:58Why don't you come on and join us?
- 2:23:59It's been great baseball here at the stadium for about a month now.
- 2:24:04I'm sure you want to be part of it.
- 2:24:05The 3-2 to Boone is a drive in the right field.
- 2:24:08Bo Jackson going back, but he's there, and he makes the catch and the side retires.
- 2:24:13So the Angels go quietly against Bud Black and the Knights,
- 2:24:15and that means we're going to X-Rennings.
- 2:24:18And as we look at the scoreboard, the story quite simple.
- 2:24:21It's the Angels won and the Royals won.
- 2:24:26Well, it's been quite a night for pitchers here at the Big A.
- 2:24:29Just about everyone who has filled the rubber has been outstanding tonight
- 2:24:32for both sides, and we're locked up in a 1-1 tie as we go to the 10th inning.
- 2:24:36Another X-Renning ballgame for the Angels, and they certainly have had a lot lately.
- 2:24:40And as we mentioned in the 9th inning, they had three on the last road trip alone,
- 2:24:45three of the six ballgames.
- 2:24:47And they're going X-Rennings tonight.
- 2:24:49And to tell you how the Angels have done in X-Rennings and more, here's Ron.
- 2:24:53Thank you very much, Alan. Greg Pryor will lead things off.
- 2:24:55He'll be followed by Willie Wilson and then Lonnie Smith.
- 2:24:58In X-Renning games, Angels have won 6 of 11, while Kansas City has won 6 of 15 this year.
- 2:25:06So the Angels were the slight edge as far as X-Renning games are concerned.
- 2:25:12This will be the first plate appearance of the game for Greg Pryor.
- 2:25:16Doug Clover, back to the mound for another inning of work.
- 2:25:18And the first pitch is over the plate, but a little over ball one.
- 2:25:21One ball, no strikes.
- 2:25:26One ball, no strikes. Pryor batting 171. No home runs and five runs driven in.
- 2:25:32Clover working from the stretch.
- 2:25:34In the next pitch is a bouncer foul wide of third.
- 2:25:37Couple of hops and then goes into the stand. One ball, one strike.
- 2:25:41Angels with a run in the 4th inning and a home run by Doug DeSensei.
- 2:25:44And then a pinch hit home run by Hal McRae.
- 2:25:48In the 8th inning, that has tied it.
- 2:25:51Here's the 1-1 pitch by Corbett and it's in the dirt low for ball two.
- 2:25:542-1.
- 2:25:56Don Sutton started with 7 innings. Really pitched a fine ball game.
- 2:26:00Whenever you can hold this Kansas City team to just one run for 7 innings, you've done a good job.
- 2:26:05Sutton walked three, struck out three, and gave up just three hits.
- 2:26:10So a good performance by the veteran right-hander.
- 2:26:16Pryor waiting. Here's the 2-1 pitch and it's a comebacker and one easy hop.
- 2:26:20Corbett has it and he goes to join her. There's out number one.
- 2:26:26That will bring up the lead-off man, Willie Wilson.
- 2:26:30And Wilson is over 4 tonight. He has struck out a couple of times.
- 2:26:35But it hit safely in six of the last seven games. So this is a very important out right here.
- 2:26:42Wilson batting 270. About two or three years ago, he led the American League in hitting.
- 2:26:48There's a bouncer to shortstop on two hops.
- 2:26:50Schofield with a quick release in time and they get the speedster going down the line.
- 2:26:54That is 6-3 in a put-up.
- 2:26:57That makes two away and that brings up the designated hitter, Lonnie Smith.
- 2:27:02Angels have out hit Kansas City 7-4.
- 2:27:07And we're tied at one.
- 2:27:10Lonnie Smith, 0-4. He is working on an 11-game hitting streak.
- 2:27:16Action out of the Angels bullpen. Cannot see who it is right now.
- 2:27:20And the pitch by Corbett is a check swing and it's fouled away.
- 2:27:24Lonnie Smith batting 290. Started the game at 290 free.
- 2:27:28That's the high point of the season for him there.
- 2:27:32All the other games, we have final scores for you.
- 2:27:46Ray Chadwick throwing out of the bullpen for the Angels to right-hander.
- 2:27:52DeSensei on the line at third. Joined her just a little bit off the line at first base.
- 2:27:57The 0-1 pitch is low and outside, 1-1.
- 2:28:03Now field of Downing, Pedersen, then Rupert Jones.
- 2:28:07Playing Lonnie Smith pretty much straight away.
- 2:28:10Here's the 1-1 pitch by Corbett. Hit off the hands, rolled towards shortstop.
- 2:28:13Comes in his scope field. He has it.
- 2:28:15Skips and throws in time. Another good play by the shortstop.
- 2:28:19And Corbett has an easy 1-2-3 in it. No runs, no hits, no errors, and nobody left on base.
- 2:28:24And after 9-1-1 here at the big A, we're still tied at one.
- 2:28:28Stick on the third defendant, Thomas Carbone, who is a fugitive and was tried in Argentina.
- 2:28:34After the 10th inning, they're going to be sending up the top of the order.
- 2:28:39It'll be Gary Pettis, Goethe, and Brian Downing.
- 2:28:41Game tied at one. Danny Jackson started and went 7-1-3 in it.
- 2:28:50And Steve Parr came in and worked one-third of an inning, and now it has been Bud Black.
- 2:29:01Gary Pettis will be batting right-handed. He is 1-4-4 this evening.
- 2:29:05And as we had mentioned, Gary's swing the bat well lately. He has hit safely in 10 of the last 12 games.
- 2:29:11Here's the first pitch at the beginning by the left-hander, and Pettis swings through a high fastball may have chased ball one.
- 2:29:18So the count is 0-1 to Gary.
- 2:29:27Bud Black, 5-7 against the league, making his 51st appearance of the year.
- 2:29:31He's worked in 104 innings at the start of the night.
- 2:29:34The next pitch is a breaking ball low on inside. That evens out the count.
- 2:29:37One ball, one strike.
- 2:29:40Gary Pettis, way around toward right field. There's a huge gap in left center. If Gary can get out in front of one.
- 2:29:51Here's the 1-1 pitch on the way, and Pettis hits one off the hands.
- 2:29:54An easy comeback here to Bud Black. He has it. He goes on to first base, and there's out number one.
- 2:30:00Three and a put out. That brings up Dick Scofield. Scoey's had a good night. He has three hits in his career. He's three for four.
- 2:30:12Last year, Bud Black had a record of 10-15, appeared in 33 games, used as a starter.
- 2:30:19Completed five, tossed a couple of shout-outs last year, pitched in 205 innings.
- 2:30:24The left-hander is 6'2", 180-pounder.
- 2:30:30Makes his home there in Kansas.
- 2:30:34And the first pitch is on the outside corner, strike one to Scofield.
- 2:30:44Black builds to wind up again, and the left-hander's 0-1 pitch is high on outside. That evens up the count.
- 2:30:51Bud came to the Major Leagues in 1982, but it was in 83 where he really started putting some victories together.
- 2:30:59Here's the 1-1 pitch. A change-up swung on and missed Scofield, really fooled on the pitch.
- 2:31:04And the count goes to 1-2.
- 2:31:06It was in 83 that Black won 10 ball games while losing just seven, and then came back in 84, won 17 ball games, and then matched year 110.
- 2:31:17Scofield waiting, and the 1-2 pitch is on the way, and Scofield takes it high for ball two.
- 2:31:28Two balls and two strikes. Black can rush it up there in a hurry. He has pretty good stuff.
- 2:31:34His strikeout ratio this year, here's the 2-2 pitch.
- 2:31:41He has swung on, hit it a hole, and under the glove of Quirk, on into left field. And Scofield has four hits in the game.
- 2:31:53And Al Rydow is checking to see how many times this year Scofield has had four hits in a game, or if he has had one.
- 2:32:03That brings up Brian Downing. Downing is 0-2 tonight.
- 2:32:07He popped up to first, struck out, walked in the fifth, and sacrificed in the eighth.
- 2:32:12And so we have just informed, thank you, Al. This is the first four-hit game for Scofield this year.
- 2:32:20The Angels have a winning run on base.
- 2:32:24Black comes set, the high leg kick, runner does not go, and it's a tailing fastball outside for ball one.
- 2:32:30Well, would you send him on? Would you give him a shot, or would you just figure that Downing is potentially an extra base hitter or a long ball man?
- 2:32:38And if he finds the alley, Scofield has a chance to score. What would you do?
- 2:32:42Well, Scofield has stolen 22 of 26 attempts. I'd have to say that if he can get a good jump, go ahead and let him go.
- 2:32:50But the one thing is you don't want to do is run out of the inning. There's a toss to first base.
- 2:32:53Black appears to be one of those left-handers that if he's not looking at you, you better be careful.
- 2:32:58There is an unknown quantity in all of this thinking, though, is Terry Bell.
- 2:33:02Terry Bell the catcher.
- 2:33:03You don't know, and that's one of the scouting reports that Manager Gene Mark has to know.
- 2:33:07What kind of a throwing arm does Bell have? And we have never seen him throw.
- 2:33:14Black comes set, runner does not go, and the pitch is over for a strike that evens up the count.
- 2:33:21In the last 11 games, Downing has been very consistent. He has driven in 11 runs.
- 2:33:26As we mentioned to you in the month of September, he's been batting right close to that 400 mark with three home runs.
- 2:33:33To go along with that almost 400 batting average.
- 2:33:36There's a throw to first base, and that time Bud Black, like so many left-handers, stepped about three quarters.
- 2:33:42He did not step to the plate, but he didn't step to first base either.
- 2:33:46And that's a borderline bop.
- 2:33:49The left-hander comes set again, and Downing slings and fouls one back out of play, and boy, did he have a rip.
- 2:33:55You know the outfield is fanned out well for Downing. There's lots of room in both alleys.
- 2:34:01There's a big, big hole between Law and Wilson.
- 2:34:03Really Law deep and near the line, almost in the corner out there on the left.
- 2:34:07That is true, and you've got all three guys out there that can run extremely well. Wilson in center, and of course, both Jackson in right.
- 2:34:13So if you hit one between them, you better hit it hard, and you better not hit it very high.
- 2:34:17Black again ready, and the pitch to Downing is slung out here.
- 2:34:20Downing to the left of you. Back to those goody lawies in the corner. Look out, it's gone!
- 2:34:25And the Angels win it, win a loss.
- 2:34:38By and downing with his 18th home run of the year, wins it for the Angels in the bottom of the 10th inning.
- 2:34:44And Doug Corbett picks up the victory, and for the total, here's how.
- 2:34:50Well, another dramatic finish for the Angels, the crowd on his feet.
- 2:34:54For the Halos, three runs on nine hits.
- 2:34:59They commit one error and leave eight men on base.
- 2:35:03For the Royals, one run on just four hits.
- 2:35:07They commit no errors and leave seven men on base.
- 2:35:11The winning pitcher, as you've heard, is Doug Corbett, and Doug pushes his record to four and two.
- 2:35:16The loser is Bud Black. He falls to five and eight.
- 2:35:20All of this before 27,067 here in the house tonight, and they'll go home happy again.
