- 0:10I found my freedom in you. I found a toy I can't lose, and
- 0:20thank God it's true. You wrapped your arms around me
- 0:24and heaven broke through. From the moment she found me.
- 0:29I found. Welcome to the Four Freedom
- 0:34Podcast. This podcast exists to bring the
- 0:37freedom of the gospel for everyday Christians with
- 0:40everyday issues. Now here are your hosts, James
- 0:44Seyfried and Brett Marks. My friend and one of my heroes
- 0:52in the pulpit, Doctor Robert Smith, has asked me just a
- 0:58moment ago to read his passage before he preaches.
- 1:04Please listen to the Word of God, Second Timothy chapter 4,
- 1:10beginning in verse one, in the presence of God and of Christ
- 1:14Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of His
- 1:18appearing in His Kingdom. I give you this charge.
- 1:23Preach. The word be prepared in season
- 1:27and out of season, correct rebuke and encourage with great
- 1:32patience and careful instruction.
- 1:35For the time will come when people will not put up with
- 1:38sound doctrine a great instead, to suit their own desires, they
- 1:42will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what
- 1:46they're itching ears want to hear.
- 1:50They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to
- 1:54myths. But you keep your head in all
- 1:59situations. Indoor hardship, do the work of
- 2:03an evangelist, discharge all of the duties of your ministry.
- 2:09For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and
- 2:12the time of my departure is near.
- 2:15I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race.
- 2:20I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the
- 2:27crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge,
- 2:31will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but also to
- 2:37all who have longed for his appearing.
- 2:44Now preach, brother. Even now, Lord Jesus, even now,
- 3:01even now, for I ask this in your name, Amen.
- 3:11The 1968 Summer Olympics were held in Mexico City.
- 3:20The contestants competed. The awards were given to the
- 3:26winners and during that evening, when the closing ceremony was
- 3:32taking place, an unusual thing took place.
- 3:39As the announcer was giving his concluding remarks and the
- 3:44people were prepared to exit, the lights went on.
- 3:53In the back of the stadium. There was a runner making his
- 3:58way into the stadium and onto the track.
- 4:02The competition had ended many hours ago, but this runner,
- 4:08whose name was John Stephen Arari from Tanzania, came into
- 4:15the stadium not running, not trotting, but barely moving.
- 4:21He was a marathon runner. The marathon's were arduous
- 4:32places of extreme strenuous activity and this one arrived in
- 4:39the stadium late. His gait was very slow.
- 4:46He had fallen on hard times, bruising his head, entering his
- 4:55knee. He kept going, and the closer he
- 5:00came to the finish line, the louder the applause got, until
- 5:06he finally crossed the finish line and fell into the arms of
- 5:10medical attendants. They rushed him to the hospital.
- 5:15The next day, the journalists interviewed him and asked him
- 5:19the question that everyone wanted to ask.
- 5:23Why did you continue to run when the race had been over hours
- 5:27before? And he said my country did not
- 5:32send me 11,000 kilometers or 6835 miles from Tanzania to
- 5:42Mexico City to start the race. They sent me to finish the race.
- 5:51The Apostle Paul is familiar with blood.
- 5:56He knew what it was like to be stoned.
- 6:00He knew what it was like to be whipped.
- 6:04He knew what it was like to be beaten.
- 6:07And here he is finishing the race, a race that started 30
- 6:14years ago. And now he is giving his last
- 6:20words. Paul had probably had his
- 6:23initial hearing before the Roman tribunal.
- 6:27They had sentenced him to death, that there was no escape except
- 6:32through death. And Paul gives his last words.
- 6:37For last words are pleasurable, sometimes painful, but always
- 6:43memorable. The last words of my father to
- 6:47me were these words. Little Robert, take care of your
- 6:52mother. The last words of my mother to
- 6:55me were, little Robert, I'll see you in heaven.
- 7:01The last words of Jesus to his disciples in the upper room
- 7:06were, let not your heart be troubled.
- 7:09If you believe in God, believe also in me.
- 7:12For in my father's house there are many mansions and many
- 7:15rooms. And if it were not so, I would
- 7:18have told you, I'd go to prepare a place for you.
- 7:21And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again to
- 7:25receive you unto myself, that where I am ye may be all so.
- 7:32And here Paul gives his last words.
- 7:38I charge you before God and his Son Christ Jesus, who will judge
- 7:48the living and the dead before he is appearing in the coming of
- 7:54his Kingdom. This is the word of solemnity.
- 7:59This is the word of serious oath, giving, charging and
- 8:06commanding by Timothy's father in the ministry, Paul.
- 8:13I charge you before God, before his Son Jesus Christ, who will
- 8:21judge the living and the dead. It is the Father who entrusts
- 8:28the Son with judgments. But that's what Jesus was
- 8:31talking about in John 523 when he said, the Father has
- 8:35entrusted me with judgments. This is exactly what Paul meant
- 8:42when he said in 2nd Corinthians 5 and 10 We all must stand
- 8:47before the judgment seat of Christ to give an account of the
- 8:51deeds done in our body, whether they be good or evil.
- 8:56The ironic thing about Christ's judging is that the one who
- 9:04judges is the one who will be judged.
- 9:08Christ will be judged for our sin.
- 9:12He was wounded for our transgressions.
- 9:15He was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of
- 9:20our peace was upon him, and with His stripes we are healed.
- 9:23The Judge is the one who is judged so that we can be
- 9:28proclaimed as innocent and free. He who judges, judges us, and he
- 9:39judges the living in the dead at his appearing, the great blessed
- 9:46return of Jesus. This is so important to Paul
- 9:50that he mentions his appearance a second time in this particular
- 9:56pericope or teaching paragraph, because it says in verse #8 Whom
- 10:02the righteous judge shall give me at that day, and not to be
- 10:06only, but to all those who love his appearing.
- 10:12Maranatha, come, Lord Jesus, He will judge and will be the
- 10:19judge, and He will stand before us, and we will be declared
- 10:24eternal residence at His appearance.
- 10:28But He will come also at the coming of His Kingdom, not only
- 10:33as the judge, but as the king. He is the only king who will not
- 10:41need to be nominated. He is the only king who will not
- 10:47need to be elected. He is the only king who cannot
- 10:52be impeached. In fact, the word there in
- 10:57Exodus 15 and 18, malek, the Hebrew word malek, which means
- 11:05the Lord reigns forever and ever.
- 11:09It really means the Lord succeeds himself.
- 11:13You can't vote him in, you can't vote him out.
- 11:17He just succeeds himself. He is from everlasting to
- 11:24everlasting. I say to you, my brothers and
- 11:27sisters, I want you to be a crystal crack.
- 11:32Doesn't make any difference what your political party is,
- 11:35independent, Republican or Democrats.
- 11:38What you need to be is a Christocratic Republican, a
- 11:43Christocratic Democrat, a Christocratic independent.
- 11:47And when we get to heaven, independents, Republicans and
- 11:52Democrats will drop off. But to be a crystal Crats,
- 11:56heaven knows that language. And if you are a crystal Crat,
- 12:01you will promote principle above anything that's frivolous and
- 12:08temporary. I charge you that you ought to
- 12:13be one who will understand that you stand before Christ, the Son
- 12:20of God, and he will be the one who will judge the living and
- 12:24the dead at his appearing, and at the time of his coming preach
- 12:31the Word. I sometimes think that Moses had
- 12:36it much easier in preaching in Egypt then Jeremiah had it in
- 12:42preaching in Jerusalem. Because Moses told Pharaoh in
- 12:47Exodus 5 and two what the Lord had said to him, Let his people
- 12:51go. And Pharaoh responded, Who is
- 12:54the Lord that I should let his people go?
- 12:57I've checked the directory of deities and I don't see his name
- 13:01there. Who is the Lord?
- 13:04And then the Lord just took 10 plagues to introduce himself to
- 13:07Pharaoh and Egypt. But here, here are prophets and
- 13:15magicians who are preaching from the authority of Rah and Isis
- 13:21and all kinds of pluralistic gods.
- 13:24But Jeremiah, how do you preach when you have an arch prophet by
- 13:30the name of Hananiah who preaches from the same book you
- 13:34preach from? Who says that?
- 13:37The God who sent you, Jeremiah, sit Hananiah as well.
- 13:43Jeremiah said you're going to the captivity, Judah, southern
- 13:45southern Kingdom, and you're going to stay there for 70
- 13:48years. Hananiah says, no, you're going
- 13:51to the captivity, but you only stay two years.
- 13:54How do you preach when people are preaching from the same
- 13:59Bible and saying that God sent them?
- 14:03Jeremiah just kept preaching and the Bible says in Jeremiah
- 14:06chapter 28 verse 17 that that same year in the seventh month
- 14:10Hannah and I died because the Word of God will stand forever.
- 14:17You've got to keep on preaching. You preach the truth in somebody
- 14:21down the street who is not preaching anything at all.
- 14:25Every Sunday the parking lot is field.
- 14:28Every Sunday there are people joining their church and you're
- 14:31standing and preaching the gospel.
- 14:34And it seemed like the baptistry stays dry.
- 14:37I'm going to tell you preach, Let the word convict and let the
- 14:44word do its work. He said to him, preach the word.
- 14:50He says, reprove. That is, you ought to be able to
- 14:57provide some critique and you ought to do it with tenderness,
- 15:03do it with gentleness. One of our students, he and his
- 15:08wife lost their two week old baby.
- 15:12And he came to me for counsel and he asked me, he said, Doctor
- 15:16Smith, how is it? How can I pray to a God who has
- 15:19hurt me? I did not reprove him with
- 15:24harshness. I cried with him and his wife.
- 15:28And then I challenged him. I said you need to preach this,
- 15:32this funeral, because God is asking you, do you really
- 15:36believe in what you've been telling your people?
- 15:37You need to preach that. And I told him what Doctor
- 15:41William Hall, formerly of Southern Seminary and then of
- 15:44Stanford University, had said, and that is this, that tragedy
- 15:50is not redeemed by explanation. Tragedy is redeemed by
- 15:57transformation. You can't explain everything,
- 16:02but when God transforms you, it doesn't matter whether or not
- 16:07you're going to explain it or not.
- 16:09What you have is a God who can take all things and cause them
- 16:14to work together for good. I tell you not that because of
- 16:18what I heard, I know what it's like to be at the bottom.
- 16:22I know what it's like to have a son murdered.
- 16:25I know what it's like to be a young widower.
- 16:27I know what it's like to have three cancer diagnosis.
- 16:31And I've been to the bottom. But I want to tell you the
- 16:33volume is solid because he's at the bottom and God is able to
- 16:38keep you and able to sustain you.
- 16:42And he preached that service and people were amazed.
- 16:46And he was amazed because God showed up to let him know that
- 16:51I'm able to do exceeding abundantly.
- 16:52Above all that you can ever ask to think according to the power
- 16:57that works in you. Reprove rebuke.
- 17:03You may have to beat rebuke the leader of the church, Simon
- 17:08Peter, who would eat with the Gentiles in Galatians 211
- 17:15through 14. But when the Jews showed up, he
- 17:18disassociated with himself, himself with the Gentiles, and
- 17:23Paul called him a hypocrite and withstood him to his face.
- 17:29That may be necessary at times, rebuke, but the same Simon Peter
- 17:35who got rebuked was the same Simon Peter who was a recipient
- 17:42of God's grace. You remember that he denied the
- 17:45Lord not once, twice, but three times.
- 17:47And Jesus fixed him breakfast and asked him three questions.
- 17:52Do you love me? And then Jesus sent a special
- 17:56telegram delivered by Mary Magdalene to the disciples on
- 18:01the resurrection morning. Tell my disciples.
- 18:05And Peter, Peter got a special invitation to let him know.
- 18:10Peter, I haven't given up on you.
- 18:13And Peter went on to preach the church's first revival on the
- 18:17Day of Pentecost because there is no expiration date when it
- 18:23comes to grace. I was walking past a Delta agent
- 18:28who was trying to sell Sky Miles to potential customers and to
- 18:35enroll them in a program. He said, you know when you get
- 18:38Sky Miles, they're with you forever.
- 18:41They never expire. But I know something better than
- 18:43that. Grace never expires.
- 18:48And I don't know why it is that we cannot marry rebuke with
- 18:54grace, rebuke with restoration. God is able to restore you.
- 19:02Or you said I made a mistake. Grace has not expired on you.
- 19:10God can pick you up and turn you around and place your feet on
- 19:16solid ground. Rebuke and then exhorts.
- 19:21That is encouraged. There's so many policies in our
- 19:27churches who don't know anything more than part of the gospel.
- 19:32Apollos in the 18th chapter of the book of Acts, verse 24 and
- 19:38following, preached the baptism of John the Baptist, and Aquila
- 19:42and Priscilla took him aside and to their own home and showed
- 19:47Apollos the word of the Lord more perfectly.
- 19:50And he began to refuse those who did not believe in Jesus and
- 19:55became an effective apologist, an effective preacher.
- 20:01Oh, there are so many in our sanctuaries.
- 20:06Who need to be encouraged and need to know that God wants to
- 20:12use them. Not only that, he says with
- 20:17completes patience and teaching. That is with long-suffering and
- 20:25patience that must be part of our itinerary.
- 20:29It is this long-suffering and patience and this doctrine that
- 20:37we must have as we minister to people.
- 20:41Jesus was so patient with his disciples.
- 20:47He enrolled them in a three-year MDA program in a seminary, and
- 20:54in that third and final year, one of his students by the name
- 20:58of Philip asked him in John 14 and 8, Show us the Father and
- 21:03we'll be satisfied. And Jesus looked at Philip and
- 21:07says, have I been with you this long?
- 21:09Three years and you still don't know who I am.
- 21:12When you've seen me, you've seen the Father.
- 21:14I'm the identical twin of the Father.
- 21:17I'm the human face of the Father.
- 21:19The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
- 21:23We beheld His glory, the glory only forgotten, with the Father
- 21:26full of grace and truth. I'm surprised that you don't
- 21:30know this and yet you hear Jesus saying in the 16th chapter of
- 21:36John. Many things I have to share with
- 21:40you, but you're not ready for them yet.
- 21:43He lovingly and patiently brought them along.
- 21:48I get rather surprised and sometimes dismayed when I hear
- 21:56people who get their PhDs and so forth think that they have now
- 22:01attained all the world's knowledge.
- 22:03When you get a PhD, the last time I checked the alphabet,
- 22:08there were 26 letters. PhD.
- 22:11That's three letters. That means you have 23 more
- 22:13letters to get. None of us know.
- 22:16Oh, and God is in the business of growing us and developing us
- 22:23so that we have an appetite to know more and more about Jesus.
- 22:29He says the reason why you need to do this is because the time
- 22:32is coming when people will not endure a sound doctrine, but
- 22:37they will gather into themselves, heap up into
- 22:40themselves teachers with itching ears.
- 22:45The time is coming. John Wesley used to say, The
- 22:48world is my parish. John Wesley would probably now
- 22:53say the world is in my parish. Teachers and preachers are in
- 22:57the parish preaching heterodoxical and false things
- 23:02that the Bible never approves of.
- 23:07Preachers and teachers with itching ears who say what the
- 23:14people want to hear. My mother was one of God's best
- 23:20cooks. I'm certain to that.
- 23:23But I said to myself, as I grew up in their home, mother and
- 23:26father's home, there'd be some foods that I would never eat
- 23:29once I got out of there. I'd never eat Liva beans, I'd
- 23:34never eat Pinto beans, and I'd never eat squash.
- 23:37I wanted foods that were palatable, that were tasty.
- 23:43She said no, they may be palatable, but they're not
- 23:45profitable for your own health. So she just kept giving us Pinto
- 23:49beans and lime of beans and squash until after a while I
- 23:55develop an appetite and now some of my favorite foods are lime of
- 24:01beans, Pinto beans and squash. Paul understood that there's
- 24:09times the word will not be palatable, but it is always
- 24:15profitable because Paul says that the 20th chapter of Acts
- 24:19verse one, I have not kept anything back from you which was
- 24:24profitable unto you, but I have taught you publicly and from
- 24:29house to house. And there in that memorable
- 24:32verse in Second Timothy chapter 3, verse 16, all scripture is
- 24:37given by inspiration of God, and it is profitable for doctrine,
- 24:43for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
- 24:48that the man of God, the women of God, the people of God may be
- 24:51complete, perfect, fairly furnished into all good works.
- 24:56Oh, I know your people may not always want that which is
- 25:00profitable. They want the palatable stuff,
- 25:03they want the novel stuff, they want the sweet stuff, they want
- 25:07the entertaining stuff. Keep giving them the profitable
- 25:11doctrine so that you're not raising up any kind of nursery,
- 25:16you're raising up an army. The time is coming when they
- 25:22will not endure sound doctrine. They will accumulate for
- 25:25themselves teachers that have itching ears, and they will turn
- 25:31away from the truth and return to fables.
- 25:38That was happening in Paul's day.
- 25:40We see this as given evidence in Second Timothy chapter 2, verse
- 25:4617 and verse 18. Hymenaeus and Philetus.
- 25:53They taught doctrines that resembled Gang Green.
- 25:59Paul talked about. It destroyed the faith of many
- 26:04because they taught that the resurrection had already come.
- 26:08Hymenaeus and Philetus and we've already heard about the
- 26:13importance of theological singing.
- 26:17There needs to be a time that we take a look at church history
- 26:22and as I look at it, we sing more heresy in churches today
- 26:28than they committed in the 1st 500 years of church history.
- 26:33No solid theology. A good tune with a non biblical
- 26:39texts. Sometimes when you hear that
- 26:43kind of singing in some of the churches that I go to that I
- 26:47feel like I have to give the congregation an exegetical ex
- 26:51lacs to clean them out before they can get ready to hear the
- 26:57gospel. Because our people have
- 27:00forgotten what real teaching and preaching is.
- 27:06Well, verse 5 it says now what you need to do is to keep your
- 27:12head steady. You need to stay alert, be clear
- 27:18minded, that is be alert and not be shaken by what takes place.
- 27:26I remember on January the 15th, 2009, it was Chesley
- 27:33Sullenberger who got on a plane as the captain at the LaGuardia
- 27:38Airport, took off with the plane full of people and a few
- 27:44stewardesses and flew the plane and within minutes the plane
- 27:49flew into some Canadian geese that immobilized both engines.
- 27:57He tried to fly the plane without any kind of power,
- 28:02navigating the plane, flying 900 feet over the George Washington
- 28:08Bridge and landing it in the Hudson River.
- 28:12The same number of people that got on the plane were the same
- 28:16number of people that got off the plane.
- 28:18And when they decorated him with citations and commendations, he
- 28:22stopped and said I could not have done this had this not been
- 28:26for my copilot Jeff Styles. While I was navigating the
- 28:30plane, he was flipping switches, and because he was flipping
- 28:35switches, I was free to keep my head and to keep you alive.
- 28:43Old brothers and sisters, time is out for a one person
- 28:48ministry, a solo ministry. You need some switch flippers,
- 28:53some people in the church who will not get credits, who will
- 28:58not have renowned, but you need them behind the scenes, who work
- 29:02in the shadows, who are praying, who are seeking God, who are
- 29:06working in the cry room, keeping the plane in the air and helping
- 29:13us to have a successful ministry.
- 29:17Paul says keep your head in all situations.
- 29:20Paul says you've got to endure hardship.
- 29:25Our preaching must not be the kind of preaching that tells
- 29:28people that your hardships are over once you become a
- 29:32Christian. It is not prosperity theology,
- 29:36it's adversity theology that we must preach.
- 29:39Anyone can do well with prosperity theology.
- 29:43But what do you do when adverse times come when there are no
- 29:48callow in the stall, when there are no crops in the field, when
- 29:53there are no berries on the tree, when there are no grapes
- 29:57in the vine? Can you still say, yet will I
- 30:01rejoice in God my Savior? And when the thorn is not
- 30:06removed from your flesh, and you've asked the Lord three
- 30:08times to remove it, can you still praise him when He says,
- 30:14My grace is sufficient for you? My strength is made perfect in
- 30:19your weakness. Endure hardships because it's
- 30:26not just getting out of trouble that counts.
- 30:29It's what you get out of trouble that counts.
- 30:32How does trouble help you? What do you learn from trouble?
- 30:36You cannot get to verse 5 and Psalm 23, the banquet table that
- 30:42he prepares before you in the presence of your enemies, until
- 30:45you walk to the valley of the shadow of death, and you fear no
- 30:50evil because he is with you. His rod and his staff, they
- 30:55comfort you, Paul says keep your head, Paul says, and do
- 31:01hardship. Paul says do the work of an
- 31:05evangelist doesn't mean just do revivals, but do the work of an
- 31:11evangelist. Share the good news because the
- 31:15Bible presents the gospel not as just good advice, but good news.
- 31:22Paul will tell you it's good news because in chapter 8 of
- 31:27Acts I was the church's number one Public Enemy, but in Acts
- 31:32Chapter 9, I became the church's number one public defender.
- 31:37In Acts chapter 8, I was blind on the inside and could see on
- 31:43the outside. With Acts Chapter 9, I was blind
- 31:47on the outside, but I could see on the inside.
- 31:51In Acts chapter 8. I prohibited preaching, but in
- 31:56Acts Chapter 9, I became a preacher.
- 32:00In Acts Chapter 8, I told people, you have to do this.
- 32:05I'm given orders. But in Acts Chapter 9, I took
- 32:09orders and I said, Lord, what will you have me to do?
- 32:15It's not just good advice, it's good news.
- 32:19And then Paul moves on to tell us that you ought to fulfill
- 32:23your duties as a minister, all of them.
- 32:28You're not just to be selective and do what you want to do.
- 32:34You ought to be one who is to fulfil all that the Lord has
- 32:41given unto you. What Paul says in verse number
- 32:45six, I'm ready to be offered up. The time of my departure is at
- 32:53hand. I fought a good fight, I have
- 32:57finished my course, I've kept the faith.
- 33:01I'm ready to be offered up. He uses 2 metaphors.
- 33:06One of them is a nautical metaphor in which the ship would
- 33:13be tied down with ropes at the iron uprights, but when it came
- 33:20time for the ship to go to the other shore, they loose the
- 33:25ropes and the ship went on to sail.
- 33:31I'm sorry, tonight I'm feeling rather poor.
- 33:37I wish I could. Finish this message.
- 33:40I'm weak. I'm weak.
- 33:47God, you know my heart. Give me strength, help me to
- 33:57carry on what I'm unable to do in my own strength, ready to be
- 34:05offered up. The time of my departure is at
- 34:09hand. I've fought a good fight.
- 34:15I finished my course. I've kept the faith, and there's
- 34:22laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord,
- 34:27the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, but not to me.
- 34:32Only. But all those who love his
- 34:37appearing? Found my new name, Found that
- 34:41good grace, found that healing. And the tears fell down my face
- 34:47when I found my beginning. It has no ending.
- 34:49I found that second chance. Found my best friend, Found my
- 34:52forgiveness, found my happiness. I've been singing ever since I
- 34:54found my freedom. Thanks for listening to the Four
