Transcript
- 0:00I'm really excited for this episode.
- 0:02Nice.
- 0:02We've talked about it for a while.
- 0:04Book context, a bit of behind the scenes.
- 0:06I love to read a finance book.
- 0:08So Vic loves reading finance books.
- 0:10But also, when it comes to planning our podcast,
- 0:13we like to try and work in advance.
- 0:15You know, we like to make sure that we've got enough good ideas
- 0:19in the bag to be able to plan our content calendar
- 0:23and find out who's my voice.
- 0:25You know, it's a venture world.
- 0:28Anyway, probably about a month ago,
- 0:30I said to Vic, I think we're a bit low on raising the curve episodes.
- 0:34Can you think of some thanks?
- 0:35And she was like, I've got some ideas.
- 0:37And we've recorded quite a few lately.
- 0:39And they have been so interesting.
- 0:42And I'm really looking forward to today
- 0:44because when we last did an episode,
- 0:46it was kind of like a book review.
- 0:48What was it, the psychology of money?
- 0:50It was the psychology of money.
- 0:51And we have had so many people constantly saying
- 0:55that they love those types of episodes
- 0:57because it is a lot to read a book like that.
- 0:59And a lot of people don't have the time.
- 1:01And so I think to kind of get the best bits out of it.
- 1:04Well, the book I'm reading at the moment is come as you are.
- 1:06So I can do a review after that.
- 1:08I've read that book.
- 1:09Oh, my God, it's so good.
- 1:10It's so good.
- 1:11It's about whizms.
- 1:12It's slight tension for the finance book.
- 1:14Yeah, it's about sexual accelerators and breaks and desire
- 1:18and not really podcast, financial podcast worthy.
- 1:22But don't you think the accelerator break thing is fascinating?
- 1:25Fascinating.
- 1:26Yeah.
- 1:27I'm going to give the one minute overview of this.
- 1:29But if anyone's interested,
- 1:30it's called come as you are like CUM.
- 1:32Not come as you are.
- 1:34And it's called, it's C-O-E-M-E.
- 1:36Is it?
- 1:37Yeah.
- 1:38A lot.
- 1:39Okay. It's called come as you are.
- 1:40Anyway, point is, they talk about orgasms.
- 1:42But the breaking accelerator thing is basically like,
- 1:44as women, we are so much harder for us to get in the mood
- 1:49than it is for guys.
- 1:50Like they seem...
- 1:51We'll be sure desires our brain.
- 1:52Not our gender.
- 1:53100%.
- 1:54And like the idea that you could be in a bedroom that's like,
- 1:56guys could be in a bedroom that has like take out all over the floor
- 1:59and you know, it just grows.
- 2:00And they could still like, in a reaction where it's like for me,
- 2:03when I read that book, I realized like a tidy clean room
- 2:07with like a candlelit.
- 2:08It's like the biggest effort is yet for me ever,
- 2:11which is so weird.
- 2:13But like small things like that can be like huge accelerators
- 2:16or breaks like noise in your house.
- 2:18You're in a flat and you're super noisy.
- 2:19If you've heard about someone walking in on you
- 2:21or like all those things can make it hard for you to get around.
- 2:23So anyway, it's a great book.
- 2:24Then it wants to listen.
- 2:25Yes.
- 2:26But that's not what we're talking about today.
- 2:27We're talking about a finance book.
- 2:29Oh, even that just makes it sound boring.
- 2:30No, it's not.
- 2:31It's a money book.
- 2:32And it's so beautiful.
- 2:33Oh, it's such a cool.
- 2:34Sorry, it's been to Greece and back.
- 2:36It's a bit weird.
- 2:37I don't think it looks weird at all.
- 2:38We should see my books.
- 2:39So it's called The Soul of Money.
- 2:41And it is written by a lady called,
- 2:45what's her name?
- 2:46Lin Twist.
- 2:47She's a global activist and she is,
- 2:50she's spent decades working with like billionaires
- 2:53and people in like remote remote communities.
- 2:55And it's all about her business or her,
- 2:58sorry, her charity is called The Hunger Project.
- 3:00And it's like she is talking about the fact that her key thing
- 3:04is like we have enough food in the world to feed everybody.
- 3:08It's just not distributed in the right way.
- 3:10So anyway, then she starts.
- 3:11So she has to go and raise money from these billionaires
- 3:14to help, you know, these extreme,
- 3:16this community is an extreme poverty.
- 3:18And like she used to talk.
- 3:19Anyway, she's talked to both ends of the spectrum
- 3:21in terms of wealth on this planet.
- 3:23And one amazing woman.
- 3:24Oh, it's just like her,
- 3:26this book is kind of a reflection of what money does to people.
- 3:30Wow.
- 3:31And how people interact with it.
- 3:32And like just how we can control it,
- 3:36not only that control us.
- 3:37And it's, yeah, it's like pretty incredible.
- 3:39Yeah.
- 3:40Just looking even at this,
- 3:41for anyone who knows Brunei Brown,
- 3:42which I feel like most of the audience will.
- 3:44So on the front of the book,
- 3:45it says it's a quote by Brunei.
- 3:47And it says a life-changing read
- 3:48with warmth, honesty, and storytelling.
- 3:50Lin turns everything that we think we know about money upside down.
- 3:53It's the book that we all need right now.
- 3:55And if you look at the back,
- 3:56it's like Jane Goodall's Reddit,
- 3:57D-Pup Shocker,
- 3:58like all these incredible people.
- 4:00And it kind of puts our whole podcast on its huge.
- 4:02Oh, really?
- 4:03Oh, no.
- 4:04So I was like, oh, there you go.
- 4:05Really?
- 4:06Like we're like, put money away.
- 4:08You know, you might need it in the future.
- 4:10Like all of this is like, you know,
- 4:12no, you'll value, try and earn as much as you can.
- 4:15You know, so you can invest more in, like,
- 4:17save for any day.
- 4:18And like, anyway,
- 4:19Is she going the total opposite?
- 4:20Not total opposite,
- 4:21but there's just parts in it.
- 4:22I was like, oh,
- 4:23oh, my God, interesting.
- 4:24Yeah.
- 4:25The first part is all around the myth of scarcity.
- 4:27And it's all about the fact that, like I just said,
- 4:31like we've been taught to know that more is better.
- 4:35That there is never enough,
- 4:37that will never have enough.
- 4:39And this whole there is not enough,
- 4:42like rule just like runs the world.
- 4:44And if you think about,
- 4:45when you wake up in the morning,
- 4:47you know, for most people their first thought is like,
- 4:49I haven't had enough sleep.
- 4:50I haven't had enough exercise.
- 4:51I haven't had enough healthy food.
- 4:53I haven't had enough, you know, like all of this instant,
- 4:56you instantly start your day with this
- 4:59scarcity I haven't had enough mindset.
- 5:01So true.
- 5:02And I do that all the time.
- 5:04Like the number of times I wake up, I'm like,
- 5:06having enough sleep.
- 5:07And then it's just,
- 5:08that is my mindset for the day.
- 5:10And I think, you know,
- 5:12I lean into my tiredness,
- 5:13or I lean into the fact that they can't constantly,
- 5:15you know, it's just like this whole,
- 5:17yeah, it just sets the time.
- 5:18It's like not having enough of everything at a time,
- 5:21not having enough time with friends,
- 5:23not having enough light in your house,
- 5:26not having enough clothes in your wardrobe.
- 5:28Like it is,
- 5:29and also I guess.
- 5:30Not having enough time on this planet,
- 5:32not having enough time with your kids,
- 5:33not having enough time,
- 5:34it's just so good.
- 5:35But also I guess like not the timepiece,
- 5:37but like the stuffpiece,
- 5:39it's how capitalism thrives, right?
- 5:42And so like we've all bought into this,
- 5:45excuse the pun, idea that like we need more of everything, right?
- 5:49Because that's what big businesses actually profit off.
- 5:52Yeah.
- 5:53And she talks about booze and food on this planet.
- 5:57And like she's like there is enough food to feed
- 5:59every single person on this planet.
- 6:01But it's not because of lack,
- 6:04it's because of the distribution,
- 6:05and like the system of inequality,
- 6:07it's like we have just been fed
- 6:10for years and years and years,
- 6:12this toxic belief of scarcity,
- 6:14which shows up in like there's not enough
- 6:17that more is better.
- 6:18And like this is just the way it is.
- 6:20Like it's a hustle,
- 6:21it's like you've just got to get more and more and more and more.
- 6:23And she's said to the point
- 6:25that it literally like rungs people's lives
- 6:27of always wanting to have more and more and more and more.
- 6:31It's quite sad, isn't it?
- 6:32Because it's like insatiable need for more
- 6:35in every kind of element of your life.
- 6:37And it makes us like compete
- 6:39against each other instead of like collaborate, right?
- 6:41It's like if I'm competing for you for a job
- 6:45or for a house or to be the best business
- 6:47or like competing against you in like a business sense.
- 6:50And a lot of communities
- 6:51and a lot of religions don't do this,
- 6:53but it makes us hoard instead of share.
- 6:56You know, it's like this is mine,
- 6:58instead of like sharing with your community
- 7:00or your family or...
- 7:01I'm so guilty of this.
- 7:03Like I think that I've not spent enough time
- 7:06and cultures that it's proper community.
- 7:09Like I've had a few moments
- 7:11where I've traveled to parts of the world
- 7:13where it's like grandmothers raise the grandkids.
- 7:17And it's like you see babies on every hip
- 7:20and everyone cooks together.
- 7:22And it is true community.
- 7:23And I think we talk a lot about community in the West.
- 7:27But it is totally different to what?
- 7:30It looks like in a lot of cultures.
- 7:32Yeah. And I think that when you're competing
- 7:36and you know, you just want more
- 7:39and you never have enough
- 7:41and you've got that scarcity mindset.
- 7:43It's like that just leads to so much stress.
- 7:45You know, it's like we don't have enough time.
- 7:47Okay, how do I create time?
- 7:48I don't create time by having more money.
- 7:50How do I create more money?
- 7:51I create more money by having, you know,
- 7:53maybe working harder or like, you know,
- 7:54just all of this stuff
- 7:56feeds from a level of scarcity,
- 7:58not sufficiency.
- 8:00And yeah, it shows up in how we spend,
- 8:03how we save, how we treat each other,
- 8:05you know, like treating on each other
- 8:07to get to the top to have bigger
- 8:09and better whatever it is.
- 8:11Yeah, it's just like quite an incredible opening
- 8:13to the book.
- 8:14I was like, oh my goodness.
- 8:15What is my enough?
- 8:17I don't even know what my enough is.
- 8:19I don't think anyone,
- 8:20like I don't think a lot of people
- 8:21would know what their enough is.
- 8:23It's quite interesting.
- 8:24Like I think that Buddhism
- 8:26and a lot of Eastern philosophies
- 8:29that I've been lucky enough to like
- 8:31sort of learn a bit through like yoga.
- 8:34And you hear it in like the way
- 8:36that if people become monks
- 8:38and like you have to give up all your belongings
- 8:40and that's all about like being content
- 8:42and in the moment.
- 8:43And I think that with technology,
- 8:45with the way that we see what everyone else has,
- 8:48that we then perceive that we don't.
- 8:50Yeah.
- 8:51We live in a world where it's
- 8:54quite impossible unless you give up
- 8:56what is modern world really
- 8:58to have more of a detached
- 9:01against things and stuff.
- 9:03And remove that competition.
- 9:05Right?
- 9:06Like being like, oh, you've got a bigger house than me.
- 9:08Or like, oh, you've got a better place than me.
- 9:10They live in the playing field.
- 9:12There's this thing in Buddhism
- 9:13where they say like, you know,
- 9:14you don't need to give up all your stuff
- 9:16or your things.
- 9:17You just want to make sure you have your palms up.
- 9:20And it's like, yeah.
- 9:21So it's like rather than like having your palms down
- 9:24in terms of clinging to my house,
- 9:27my belongings, like the things
- 9:29because if you take them away,
- 9:31I don't know who I am and I'm not okay.
- 9:33It's like it's okay to have them
- 9:35because also like living in today's world
- 9:37like that is the reality, right?
- 9:39You do need to have things.
- 9:40Yes, yeah.
- 9:41But it's like if you take it away,
- 9:43I know like my value isn't based on the stuff
- 9:45that I have all the things that I own.
- 9:47I'm not like going to cripple without it.
- 9:49Yeah.
- 9:50And she talks about like towards the end of the book
- 9:52is like how money is just like a flow of water.
- 9:55Like it comes and it goes.
- 9:56Sometimes you have a big rush.
- 9:58Sometimes you have a trickle.
- 9:59Sometimes it gets a bit stuck.
- 10:00You know, sometimes,
- 10:01and it was just like this really beautiful analogy
- 10:04of like some people have more,
- 10:06some people have less,
- 10:07but it's like it is just an energy
- 10:09that kind of like passes through you.
- 10:11And it's like some people allow it
- 10:13to affect them more than it should.
- 10:16And there's like one question
- 10:19in the beginning of the book.
- 10:20And she's like, you know,
- 10:21when you, when you do spend money,
- 10:23are you making a choice to spend that money
- 10:26because it aligns with your values
- 10:29or are you doing it out of fear?
- 10:31You know, about scared that you're going to miss out,
- 10:34for example.
- 10:35And I really sat there and I was like,
- 10:36oh my gosh, there's a lot of,
- 10:37a lot of choices I make with my money
- 10:40in a roundabout way
- 10:42are a fear of missing out.
- 10:45Not in like the,
- 10:46the foremost things that we know,
- 10:47but like even buying a house, right?
- 10:50It's like, oh,
- 10:51I need to do that because that's the thing
- 10:53that you do and that's what everyone else does.
- 10:55And that's, yes,
- 10:56it's, yes, it's a how to grow wealth.
- 10:57But even that in itself,
- 10:59growing wealth through property,
- 11:01through investments,
- 11:02like it's all to have more and more and more.
- 11:06Yes, there's like,
- 11:07there's, there's a point
- 11:08where you have financial independence
- 11:10and freedom.
- 11:12But at what point do you stop
- 11:14like running that race?
- 11:16When you say,
- 11:17like I love the analogy
- 11:18of the water,
- 11:19I think that Roxanne Fursi
- 11:20and that conversation
- 11:21we have with her,
- 11:22she spoke about that a lot
- 11:23and she,
- 11:24and so maybe we could link that
- 11:25into the podcast show
- 11:26and once if you haven't listened to that episode,
- 11:27because she,
- 11:28she spoke a lot about how money
- 11:29is an energetic exchange.
- 11:30And I think it was
- 11:32totally an unlock for me.
- 11:34But what you just said then about
- 11:36like choosing to spend out of fear,
- 11:39could you think of some other examples in the book?
- 11:41Because I really want to reflect on that for myself.
- 11:43I think it's for like,
- 11:45you know,
- 11:46are you,
- 11:47are you maybe buying clothes
- 11:48because you want to fit in
- 11:50and you want to,
- 11:51or is it actually
- 11:52because of how it makes you feel?
- 11:55It's more just
- 11:57making sure that when you spend money,
- 11:59it aligns your values.
- 12:00And we've kind of said that,
- 12:01and it's,
- 12:02I think for maybe,
- 12:04maybe quite a few people,
- 12:06it's like, yeah, but what does that mean?
- 12:07Do you know what I mean?
- 12:08Like even for me,
- 12:09spending a line with your values,
- 12:11it's like, yeah,
- 12:12when I buy gifts for other people,
- 12:15that,
- 12:16noticeably,
- 12:17I feel really great about that.
- 12:19You know,
- 12:20and it's like,
- 12:21that kind of comes back to this,
- 12:22like money is a flow of water.
- 12:24It's like a flow of,
- 12:25it needs to flow.
- 12:26Like it flows from me
- 12:29to the business owner who makes the coffee,
- 12:31which is exactly what privacy was saying.
- 12:34You know, it's like,
- 12:35it's just a flow,
- 12:36and it's like,
- 12:37big.
- 12:38It really carries your intentions as well,
- 12:40because if you're spending money on cigarettes,
- 12:44cigarettes,
- 12:45yeah, that's your intention,
- 12:46is that you are supporting a
- 12:48blowing money to that business
- 12:50that provides that for,
- 12:51yeah,
- 12:52and it's like making such a good way
- 12:53to think of it.
- 12:54I really love that.
- 12:55Also,
- 12:56they also talk about how it can be such a blessing
- 12:58and a curse.
- 12:59And part of me,
- 13:00I was like,
- 13:01yeah, okay,
- 13:02billionaire is like,
- 13:03they have it so tough.
- 13:04But I remember,
- 13:05she deals with these,
- 13:06you know,
- 13:07people that have inherited a whole lot of wealth
- 13:09and completely lost themselves,
- 13:11completely, you know,
- 13:13they have no idea who their friends are
- 13:15because it's all been dictated by money.
- 13:17Like they have no drive determination.
- 13:20They don't know their own purpose.
- 13:22Like all of that.
- 13:23And there's been people that,
- 13:24you know,
- 13:25it's created divides amongst family.
- 13:27There was one lady there.
- 13:28She was like,
- 13:29I do not want to inherit any of my family's wealth.
- 13:31It was a family billionaire.
- 13:33She was like,
- 13:34I've seen what it's done to my parents
- 13:36and my grandparents.
- 13:37And I don't want any of that.
- 13:38And it's like,
- 13:39it can be a curse.
- 13:40If you get too much of a flow,
- 13:41you know,
- 13:42it can really.
- 13:43You're drowning.
- 13:44Yeah.
- 13:45It's just interesting to view it as like this thing
- 13:47that just
- 13:48blows through your life
- 13:49throughout your life.
- 13:50You know,
- 13:51into things that you want to pass it on to.
- 13:54I really like what you said earlier as well
- 13:56about the idea of some people have more,
- 13:58some people have less,
- 13:59like,
- 14:00a different times in your life.
- 14:01I think
- 14:02something I know
- 14:03when we've spoken out
- 14:04that's like on social media
- 14:05or,
- 14:06I don't know if we've spoken about
- 14:07on the podcast before,
- 14:08but like,
- 14:09no one is in an exact
- 14:10similar position to you, right?
- 14:11Like,
- 14:12no one has the same amount of assets,
- 14:13the same amount in there.
- 14:14Bank account,
- 14:15the same access to inheritance,
- 14:16or whatever as you do.
- 14:18Yeah.
- 14:19And like, yes,
- 14:20there's the piece of realising
- 14:21you don't know what they're paying for
- 14:22or what's happening with other scenes.
- 14:24Like, you don't know
- 14:25what someone's actual financial picture is.
- 14:26So,
- 14:27you shouldn't,
- 14:28you've got to try and not be jealous
- 14:29of other people
- 14:30that have more.
- 14:31But it's
- 14:32also maybe like,
- 14:33thinking about it
- 14:34and that someone
- 14:35might have a really
- 14:36full river at that point in time,
- 14:37but it doesn't mean
- 14:38they're always going to.
- 14:39Yeah.
- 14:40And just because you've got a trickle
- 14:41at the moment,
- 14:42it's always going to be.
- 14:43It's like accepting the fact
- 14:44that, like,
- 14:45water, energy,
- 14:46and money flows
- 14:47in different stages
- 14:48at different times of your life.
- 14:49Yeah.
- 14:50And just like,
- 14:51kind of letting go of
- 14:52trying to hold on to
- 14:54trying to stroll or
- 14:55compare your pool of water
- 14:57with some analysis.
- 14:58And it's like,
- 14:59it's,
- 15:00it's almost like an energy,
- 15:01right?
- 15:02And we can direct it
- 15:03where we want to.
- 15:04And, you know,
- 15:05when we treat it with,
- 15:06like,
- 15:07fear or guilt,
- 15:09then that kind of energy
- 15:10stagnates,
- 15:11whereas if we actually
- 15:14embrace it
- 15:15and use it
- 15:16with the really purpose
- 15:17and clarity,
- 15:18it can actually be quite powerful.
- 15:20You know,
- 15:21if you're like,
- 15:22I actually want to support this charity,
- 15:23or I actually want to support this company,
- 15:24or I actually want to buy this gift
- 15:25for this person
- 15:26that's in need,
- 15:27or anything like that,
- 15:28it's like,
- 15:29it creates a real purpose
- 15:30and clarity
- 15:31to flow that money
- 15:32in that direction.
- 15:33Yeah.
- 15:34I also love the idea
- 15:35of that,
- 15:36like, just even,
- 15:37if we were to say,
- 15:38like, you were giving
- 15:39to charity right now,
- 15:40like, let's say there was,
- 15:41like, a charity
- 15:42you're really passionate about,
- 15:43when you go
- 15:44to like,
- 15:45make that payment,
- 15:46or give that person money,
- 15:47it's like,
- 15:48sending intention
- 15:49with it to,
- 15:50like,
- 15:51because it's not just the money
- 15:52that goes in their case,
- 15:53like,
- 15:54or she spoke about,
- 15:55she's like,
- 15:56I had to go to this,
- 15:57really,
- 15:58like,
- 15:59a charity,
- 16:00and she said,
- 16:01he didn't even know
- 16:02what the charity is about,
- 16:03like,
- 16:04so disinterested
- 16:05and gave her,
- 16:06like,
- 16:07absolutely no time of day,
- 16:08wrote a check
- 16:09because he wanted
- 16:10the business to look
- 16:11like it was supporting.
- 16:12You know,
- 16:13it wasn't,
- 16:14he didn't value
- 16:15their charity,
- 16:16he just wanted to do it
- 16:17from PR standpoint,
- 16:18essentially.
- 16:19She said,
- 16:20she put the money in her back,
- 16:21put the chicken in her back pocket,
- 16:22and like,
- 16:23for months,
- 16:24just didn't do anything
- 16:25with it,
- 16:26she didn't deposit it,
- 16:27because it would provide
- 16:29loans to
- 16:55this charity then it'll come back and you know like it was this whole and some people might be like
- 16:58oh that's so eerie fury and that's what but it's it's it's I don't know it's like when you have
- 17:02that intention I truly believe that's what you put out that you get back and it's yeah I think
- 17:09that that's I think it makes so much sense and like this is a weird example but like you can even
- 17:16notice it in like food for example like you know if you're like and I'm trying to make this not
- 17:21but like let's say you travel heaps for work and you're always eating in restaurants and you're
- 17:26always eating out or takeaway or whatever and you're quite disconnected from your food source like
- 17:29in terms of where the produce is coming from who's making your food like you can't explain it but
- 17:35it doesn't feel right after a while you're like all I want is a home cooked meal and it's not
- 17:40just the fact that it's healthier yeah there's something about the energetics of like you're putting
- 17:44something in your body that's been made either by you or someone you love and you I don't know
- 17:49you're just more connected to and I think that sometimes it's easy to say like oh energetic is
- 17:54woo woo it's not like you you might not even notice it but even in small ways you might eat out
- 18:00of restaurants for a week there's something in you that's like I need to go back to
- 18:04I need to go to see yeah yeah yeah she also like talks about how get money is like a current
- 18:11not a position which kind of comes into the flow thing and she's like it wants to move it wants
- 18:16to serve it's here you know it has a purpose essentially and that's to serve and yeah like when
- 18:22we dam it up out of fear or it stagnates so do we and she's like you know you she talks to some
- 18:28of the wealthiest people and many really shared the sense of like anxiety and guilt and like
- 18:34spiritual emptiness with money even though they had you know financial abundance they had so much
- 18:40money but it just meant nothing to them whereas and it was kind of what is the example I saw
- 18:45about before you know and it creates this like anxiety and guardiveness around money because
- 18:49you've created you know you're you're kind of like keeping it in close because you're like oh my gosh
- 18:54I don't want to be taken advantage of or I don't want to you know spend on this or that you know
- 18:58you're kind of you're damning it up and she's yeah obviously spoken with people that have very
- 19:04little and a very open and kind of generous with their money and they're at peace with that and
- 19:10it's just like this whole it's not greed I think it's just yeah when you have so much the kind
- 19:16of the value of it the spiritual value of it almost isn't there I think there's two things you're
- 19:21saying there yeah that that second part I think is fascinating because that's that's definitely
- 19:25speaking more to people who have so much they're so disconnected from what they spend
- 19:29away their money goes because that it's not an energetic exchange because they could be pouring
- 19:36out into the trash and they still have so much left but one of the things that you just said in
- 19:40terms of the damn I think is really interesting because it's almost like if you become if you try
- 19:46to keep it and not let it flow it has the adverse effects yeah and I think there's I guess there's
- 19:51two things right you can be careful and you can be measured in like a planned and conscious way
- 19:56with your money yeah but I think that there's a difference between that and this fear of spending
- 20:02and damning and like stopping because if I think about my life like if I think back to my time
- 20:08and said name I was a damn with everything in my life particularly my money and I know I've
- 20:15spoken others before but like if I could explain the energetics of it it was like extreme fear and
- 20:22guarding and like I I was mistaking that for being sensible with my money I think there's such a
- 20:30difference with whether it's going and spending money on something small like a bunch of flowers
- 20:35for example which you know at that point in time would have been a real waste and there's no
- 20:40way I would have spent money on a bunch of flowers but if I had a different mindset where it's like
- 20:46I have a bit of money there that I know I can you know things that bring me joy and that's really
- 20:50attached to my values and like yeah we'll bring me joy or whatever it is it's like it's just having
- 20:55a lucid grip I think you can still be and and you can still be like thinking about it because I
- 21:01think when you for me when I spend without any plan or I don't know where my money is that gives me
- 21:05almost more damn energy yes whereas if I have my money in different sort of pots and I know what
- 21:12I can spend it's way less of a damn because I know the money's there to spend I think maybe there's
- 21:19two things there it's like you can still have measures in place to make sure that your money is
- 21:23flowing in the directions that you want it to flow and it's all that being irresponsible yes
- 21:30I think in terms of what we educate as well is like every spending decision has an active power
- 21:36and we always talk about that right like when you invest you vote with your wallet when you
- 21:42you know even when you spend at a certain coffee shop like that is an active power you are giving
- 21:47that business that person you know your money and that you're you're flowing them energy you're
- 21:54giving them within investment you know tech of approval essentially is like I want you know I'm
- 21:58giving you my money so if we looked at our kind of your money reflects your values if someone wants
- 22:04to look at your bank statements what do you think they've learned about you or what do you think
- 22:09they would they would figure out that you care about okay let me have a look this actually
- 22:13really interesting and kind of scary but which account should I look at maybe you're non-essentials
- 22:19okay I feel like that's a bit more interesting she says that you should look at your bank statement
- 22:24in the same way that you look you would look at a diary like it should reflect you
- 22:30as a person and it should really tell the truth about who you are and what your values are oh
- 22:34shitballs I'm not stoked about what this says about me
- 22:37margaritas oh no this is not good this is not good at all back I have burger hang on here oh
- 22:46I was really hung over at the airport Romeo and Juliette that's amazing gelato shot oh my gosh
- 22:53oh shit I've not been a good version myself my diaries been bad I also did Uberites which I
- 22:58haven't done in years and there's Uberites on here there's Uber
- 23:04shit coffee Amazon I don't like it I don't like my do my digital money diary
- 23:12efficiency buying should online not buying locally not good that's all right oh no I'm
- 23:19gutted about that I would not I would not be friends with me gosh that's not there's actually
- 23:24I think that's a really good exercise put your investments in there I think your investments
- 23:29definitely align with your values but it's also looking at all money right like it's your
- 23:33spending it's your investing it's not just like we talk about a lot we talk a lot about investing
- 23:41aligning with your values but it's also your spending right it's also interesting because I think
- 23:48if you were to zoom out from this and all you took was like food or you know the stuff I've
- 23:54actually bought it's one thing but I think it's where have you bought it from yes and for how much
- 24:00yeah it's the layer deeper than what you're buying because I really I love the idea of supporting
- 24:07local I love the idea of buying local produce I love the idea of being healthy and putting things
- 24:12in if I look at my bank statement right now it's kind of the emphasis of that which is interesting
- 24:18just to like have a look at yourself and have a look at your bank statement and think like am I proud
- 24:23to does reflect who I want to bet yeah is this a good diary is this like someone not my diary would
- 24:29they be you know like oh so really lives with intention and like no like I want this to have I
- 24:35want this to be like like way more local rather than buying for efficiency or buying for like
- 24:42trying to save time and I also want I want there to be things that are more like selfless yeah
- 24:49I feel like I'm if you look at that and it's very selfish it's all for myself but it's not
- 24:55me to be shameful right it's just supposed to be like I don't know a reminder that your money choices
- 25:01tell a story about you and I think that's something to remember it's like it's very easy now days
- 25:07to just tap or like just you know we don't have to hand over money like we used to back in the day
- 25:14you know but it's like there's it's like every choice that you make in life is a reflection of
- 25:19you you know whether you do decide to hang out with your family or I don't know hang out with
- 25:27friends you know that's a choice that you're making if you decide to exercise or not that's a
- 25:31choice that you're making it's like it's very I think the other thing is I what I like about
- 25:36looking at your spending and at being a reflection or like a digital money diary in a way is that
- 25:43also not only is paying with a card way easier to be like quite subtle and it's not a physical I'm
- 25:50handing something over to you exchange so it's less conscious in that way but also because money
- 25:56for so long has been this taboo subject that you don't talk about when would you ever show your
- 26:01bank statement to somebody yeah but actually it's such a good exercise to look at yourself and look
- 26:06at your own spending and say like am I proud of the person that I am being with my money yeah or
- 26:12not and like in all honesty I'm so not when I look at that I look at that and I think cancel your
- 26:18Amazon subscription like they're media like me but I think it's also like you don't need to be rich
- 26:23to live an alignment right it's like it's like you can even the small decisions of like how
- 26:28you spend your time in the weekend how you know really all adds up to like your financial integrity
- 26:34and I think that's financial integrity oh that's powerful and that's like she talks about
- 26:41giving to charity and she's got stories from donors that have really shifted from like a guilt
- 26:48based investing of like I need to donate like a donate a march and like oh gosh too there's
- 26:53like values based giving which is I get to contribute to something meaningful and it's like
- 26:59we all could probably donate more but it's creating that like I want to contribute to something
- 27:08meaningful rather than I need to donate I need to donate you know because that comes back
- 27:13to the intention and like the impact that that money will have yeah yeah and it's like you don't
- 27:18need to be rich to make meaningful financial decisions like a five pound decision is much more
- 27:24powerful than a five thousand pound decision if it truly reflects who you are I think this is so
- 27:30inspiring I think you really like it actually the another thing she talks about we just can't we
- 27:34kind of talk to this is like um sufficiency and it's you know we even talk about and this is
- 27:39I was like oops we talk about this it's like having abundance mindset you know and she's like no
- 27:44sufficiency is not the same as abundance it's like it's not about more it's about having enough
- 27:50and sufficiency is not an amount it's not a dollar figure it also doesn't mean like settling for less
- 27:56it means recognizing like the richness of what you already have and that's just and that's not
- 28:01just money right that's like health wealth family education I all of that and it's it helps shift
- 28:10you away from constantly chasing and like actually living with intention and it kind of comes
- 28:16back to what we're talking about for about you know I am enough I have enough there is enough
- 28:21is kind of what she keeps putting back into the book yeah oh my god this is really hitting me where
- 28:27it's like around yeah sometimes I wish I could hear these things and then just like I had
- 28:35in the cave for a bit because I it's just so easy to get distracted or swept up in oh yeah
- 28:42that the rice or the hustle or the like yeah the stress of wanting more oh I know that but I'm
- 28:48gonna do this or I know that but I kind of want to like print out quotes and stick them all around
- 28:53my room in like the office and it's like money carries your intention we all have enough you know
- 29:00like just like this constant reminder because it's so easy to listen to this podcast or read the book
- 29:05and then kind of just fall back into old habits and it's an issue when you're being told constantly
- 29:11by all angles in society that's almost the opposite of that you know yeah but even like I I have
- 29:16sufficient I have enough I am enough there is enough I love that like such powerful words to even
- 29:23wake up to in the morning rather than like I haven't had enough say it but it's like no no I am
- 29:27enough I have enough there is enough I love yeah those three are like really powerful yeah and then
- 29:33lastly she's like money has no power except the power that we give it which is like so true it's
- 29:42it's a currency it's it's the power is what we give it in terms of like where we distribute it
- 29:48and what we intend to do with it or what we spend it on or what or you know whether we hoard it
- 29:55you know and and and giving whether it's giving your time your skills your kindness or your money
- 30:01it's like is one of the most bringing things that you can do with your resources so
- 30:07I love I love the idea of um the intention behind where you spend and I also love the idea that
- 30:15you give it the power you want so for example if you want to use your money too I don't know
- 30:22improve something that you don't like about the world or you know to contribute to a charity that
- 30:28is doing the work that you wish you had more time to do or you can be really intentional with
- 30:34your resources and you can give it the power that you want it's also on the flip side as well
- 30:38right money has no power it's at the power that you give it you know if you're stressed out because
- 30:42you don't have enough money don't let it give you that power you know like reframing it's like it
- 30:49only gives it only has a hold over you if you let it and yes there's little things that you can do
- 30:56that can set you up to like free yourself from that financial stress you know like having an
- 31:01emergency find the things like that but that's to almost like release you from this this hold that
- 31:08it has and whether it's a fear or whether it's a stress yeah you're spending whatever it is but
- 31:14it's like you're literally a piece of paper why do you have so much control over me do you know
- 31:19that's like yeah why is this thing that someone's created this means of exchange have so much control
- 31:28over me my mental health my mindset what I can achieve in like like all of this it's like no
- 31:34no and I know this is like it's a capitalist society living I get it like but it's still don't let
- 31:39something so it's almost like a made up it's control it's almost like a made up concept it's an
- 31:44exchange you're exchanging yeah god wow how amazing what an incredible book yeah and how did it
- 31:52make you feel when you like look to your own bank statements and you thought like is this a
- 31:55reflection of me I think it's it definitely made I think that the flow of money the energy
- 32:01exchange like not letting it have power over you like all of that like I do find I think
- 32:09with what we do at the curve and my own personal situation find money quite all consuming at times
- 32:17and in positive ways in negative ways but just like it is such a flow throughout my whole life
- 32:24you know all facets of it and so I find it really hard to disconnect from that but
- 32:29and even like the palms up thing is a really good analogy of letting it do its thing is kind of
- 32:35this fear that you create that you're not going to have enough it's like I don't want to wake up
- 32:40when I'm 7 to 80 years old and be like wow I worried my whole life about having enough money
- 32:48and I didn't actually just lean in and enjoy and live with purpose and like all of that so
- 32:54I don't I really admire people that don't let money control them it's so interesting that
- 32:59because like from the outside watching how you are with money in your personal life and in business
- 33:08whilst on the one hand like and you've opened up about this and the podcast about like financial
- 33:12burnout and it really really impacting your stress levels and the way you interact with friends
- 33:16and in your relationship you've definitely spoken about that so I'm not trying to say that's
- 33:19not a thing but from the outside you more than a lot of people I know do actually give that
- 33:28like and I don't know if it's if it is how you feel in terms of like not living your control way
- 33:32yeah like I like I know that you get really stressed out by money for good reason I think when
- 33:36you're running a business and you're employing people that of course it's really important to be
- 33:40aware of like how much runway you have and all of those things but like you spend money in a way
- 33:46that doesn't make other people around you feel stressed like when you spend on something
- 33:51the and maybe it's because you feel all internally and then you don't put in other people but
- 33:57to be around you like in a group setting off we're like spending money on something or you're
- 34:01buying someone a gift like you never put like how that exchange of spending or buying for whatever
- 34:11it is you never let like the emotions or the way it's impacted you affect other people
- 34:17and an example of that would be like if a bill comes even if you're like oh god that's more
- 34:23than I was expecting whatever you pay your share and it's not like something that like seeps
- 34:30into other people whereas I think I think that my my my fear and the way that money controls me
- 34:38and impacts my life and maybe it's because I'm just like a classic overseer all the time but I
- 34:45think that probably I let that impact people around me more than I would like to that you can spend
- 34:51freely within your means which I think is really admirable but I think that in itself to me is like
- 34:59okay well I've just got to I've got to continue this progress this drive this like creating wealth
- 35:05so then I can do that do you know what I mean like it's like this driven by the like okay I'm glad
- 35:10I can do it but I have to keep going to be able to do the thing but I think two things can be true
- 35:16right like you can still want to be able to live in a certain way and want to be able to be generous
- 35:21and want to be able to spend the money that you like in a way that works for you but also knowing
- 35:25that like where you are right now is enough and if for some reason you were in a different position
- 35:29it's like the palms up thing like you earn half as much money but and yeah you might not be able to
- 35:34be as generous financially but like you'd be generous in other ways and you'd be content with where
- 35:39you're at do you know what I mean it's like it's the I can sort of strive for this and I can be happy
- 35:44with where I am at the exact same time which is a hard balance because I think if you're like
- 35:49constantly trying to get somewhere to also be present where you are and have where you are is
- 35:54it's such a like almost cognitive dissonance because you trying to be present but get somewhere
- 35:59to and like and I think it's yeah it's just it's made me realize this book in particular like
- 36:05yes it was a book about money but it's also like so much bigger than that you know it's like a book
- 36:11about like how we live and living with intention and there was parts in it I was like oh my goodness
- 36:17I am so guilty of that like even like I have to donate more money I have to donate more money I
- 36:20have to donate like if you're really guilty that I don't donate more money to like charities
- 36:23and stuff and not support charities I feel really selfish when there's been money in myself
- 36:27all of this and it's like no but that's not even if I gave 50 pounds to a charity that doesn't
- 36:33make me feel you know probably any better whereas you know maybe going out and getting ingredients
- 36:41and making a friend some food who's just had a baby and is exhausted in giving that if the same
- 36:4850 pounds you know like I don't know that's probably bad example but like do you know what I mean
- 36:52I think that like is way more intentional than just like and this will be different for different
- 36:57people but I think it's it's almost thinking about like it's so interesting because we think about
- 37:01how money is a currency but it's thinking about energy as a currency it's thinking about
- 37:05yeah all elements of the things that we do and give to friends to the world to each other to
- 37:09ourselves is a currency and it's easy to be so disconnected from the currency of money and think
- 37:15of it very practically yeah rather than putting the emotion and love and intention behind
- 37:22where we're putting that money and like that's why if I look at mine and I look at how much I've
- 37:27been on Amazon on the last week which to be fair I only activated literally a week ago but for me
- 37:32it was like trying to do something quickly to get it done to do the thing rather than thinking
- 37:38I wow I get to spend money on something I get to go in and like actually choose a new hairbrush
- 37:46how exciting where do I want to buy it from who the what business do I want to support it's like
- 37:50it's it's it's changing your spending minds here into like this that it actually isn't you have
- 37:56to be intentional and if you want to be intentional in other parts of your life money has to come
- 38:01into that too and it's funny um I think it was this book I'm kind of 99% sure it was in this book
- 38:08but I've read a few since then this example of like her she was really excited to go look after
- 38:13a granddaughter who was like maybe you know three or four years old and she was like oh I'm
- 38:17gonna take her shopping I'm gonna go this place this place this place and like she was so excited
- 38:20she had the whole day planned and then her son and daughter and little quarter up and we're like
- 38:25hey like we want our daughter to start living a really intentional life and we don't want to buy her
- 38:31you know toys from big big corporates and big you know companies where there's lots of plastic
- 38:36or all of that she was like we'd really you know these are the stores that we buy our stuff from
- 38:41because they you know we're supporting local and they're ethical and they're made with good products
- 38:45and ingredients and all of that and yeah she said it for her she was like oh my goodness here I
- 38:51was thinking I was doing something good for my granddaughter yeah it was just like kind of this
- 38:55like classic example of like oh my god I can so see so many grandparents and parents you know
- 39:00doing that for their kids but then it's like what are you instilling with your kids I don't know
- 39:04yeah I mean it's all about example I think there's there's I'm my brain is just going so many
- 39:09places right now because as an example like how many times on this podcast and off this podcast
- 39:14have I talked about how like eating with intentions important to me you know like I bang on about
- 39:19like yeah I love going to an organic shop blah blah blah but like for the last five months
- 39:23I've been ordering my groceries online from this place yeah they come in plastic I mean to be
- 39:30fair like thank god they pick the plastic bags up but like it is the opposite of spending my money
- 39:35on things that are aligned yeah do you know weirdly I was you know how I went to a singles night
- 39:42where and I was speaking to someone who was talking he was talking about being a vegetarian
- 39:46and I was like oh I used to be vegan and I don't know what came over me but as we were talking
- 39:52about it I found myself getting really choked up and I was like started getting like tears in my
- 39:57eyes and I was like oh my god I cannot cry at this party like this is so embarrassing and I actually
- 40:01wasn't even that drunk I had like three and a half drinks and I started getting really emotional
- 40:06about the fact that I eat meat and like it's such a stupid example but the point is is like in that
- 40:11moment I realized what's underneath the way I'm living is misaligned with what makes me feel good
- 40:16yeah and it was like there that I was like oh my god I've been you know eating in a certain way
- 40:22because it's convenient and it's cheaper and it's like just easier for me right now but at the end
- 40:28of the day it's like it is a little bit misaligned from what feels good for me and the fact it came
- 40:33up and that setting was obviously incredibly embarrassing but but it was also just but it's stuff like
- 40:38that right it's like stopping and pausing and like taking stock of your life yeah how are you
- 40:43spending your money and where are you spending it yeah and I think the biggest takeaway for me was
- 40:48just like to ask these questions at the edge that are you living in fear so are you living from
- 40:53fear or from enoughness and it's like I am definitely living in fear I'm always get I'm I'm not
- 40:59gonna have enough money or I'm gonna lose my money or I'm gonna you know like yeah not have enough
- 41:03to sustain my lifestyle and it's I really consciously want to try and flip that into like I have
- 41:10enough I will be fine I've got you know like it's we're so much more privileged and so many other
- 41:16people on this world and yet we still think we don't have enough like it's crazy everybody it is
- 41:23crazy I'm like I am enough I have enough that is enough I'd love that yeah we should put that in
- 41:28the office we should because it's so yeah important so can we then talk about like your main big
- 41:34key takeaways from this book what would you say they were if you were to list them off this
- 41:39scarcity narrative it's just like so false it's like there is enough in this world of everything
- 41:47you know we have enough we shouldn't be constantly trying to produce more you know there's enough
- 41:53food money resources like it's it's incredible that there are still people starving and dying
- 42:03that's a whole other whole another can of worms um but also that money is a flow of energy
- 42:10and it's only as powerful as the power that you give it and yeah the last one would be there
- 42:17am I living in fear or am I living in anoffness and unfortunately it's fear we need to swap that
- 42:23round yeah I'd love to get her on the podcast oh my god how many things wouldn't she yeah she looks
- 42:29just like such a kind person yeah I just think anyone that dedicates their life to helping others
- 42:34oh is because that in itself goes again you know we talk about like we're in a society that's
- 42:40telling us that we don't have enough that we need more blah blah blah she lives in the same world
- 42:44and yet she's choosing to be different totally and I think that like it's people like her like
- 42:49Greta Thunberg like the people who could be doing the classic nine to five earning money doing the
- 42:56stuff but but they are the ones that stand up and are like I want to do it differently and that
- 43:01is like just so brave isn't it one amazing person yeah thank you so much for reading that I feel
