- 0:01The ECO personality almost always interprets external
- 0:05activity work by an arbitrary measure of value, in many cases
- 0:10monetary, but in some cases based on the benefits provided
- 0:15to the society. Religious and spiritual
- 0:18institutions frequently take up work that is considered to be
- 0:22charitable in nature, such as feeding large numbers of people
- 0:26or treating people for their health conditions, founding
- 0:30hospitals, and providing refuge to people who are suffering.
- 0:35These things are then seen as a representation of selfless work,
- 0:39a form of karma yoga. While it is true these things
- 0:44may actually be a form of conscious karma yoga, these
- 0:47outward activities are not in and of themselves definitive.
- 0:52What appears to be selfless work benefiting others may actually
- 0:57be undertaken as a form of vanity, A seeking for approval
- 1:01of self by others, et cetera. At the same time, people who
- 1:06carry out seemingly small or humble functions are frequently
- 1:10looked down upon and devalued both as to their existence and
- 1:16their spiritual potential. Both of these approaches miss
- 1:21the essential nature of spiritual development, namely
- 1:25that it takes place inwardly, unseen, unheard, unannounced and
- 1:32without fanfare. In his book The Mother, Srioro
- 1:37Bindo describes the qualities of one who aspires to be a true
- 1:41doer of divine works. At no point does he refer to the
- 1:45actual external function or work product of the individual.
- 1:51All the descriptions are related to the inner attitude, the
- 1:54dedication, the aspiration, the consecration of the individual,
- 2:00the non attachment to the results or fruits of the effort
- 2:04in whatever form of work they are doing.
- 2:08Sri Krishna makes similar statements in answer to the
- 2:11questions of Arjuna that arose in the Bhagavad Gita.
- 2:16One cannot necessarily discern the liberated man from his
- 2:20outward actions. The outward appearance does not
- 2:23always nor completely reflect the inner status.
- 2:30There was a sadak at the Srioro Bindo Ashram during the early
- 2:331970s who worked in the dining hall back area, drying and
- 2:38polishing the stainless steel plates upon which meals were
- 2:41served to the sadaks. It was unassuming work and he
- 2:46quietly went about this activity with a calm and happy demeanour.
- 2:51Prior to joining the Sri Arubindo Ashram, he was an
- 2:55ardent spiritual seeker and as a result of his deep sense of
- 2:59peace and inner ease, he had attracted a number of devoted
- 3:04followers and friends. He could have become a teacher
- 3:08and leader of a spiritual community in his own right, yet
- 3:12he chose to dry plates at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in pursuit
- 3:17of his spiritual sadhna. Someone trying to judge him by
- 3:21his outward activity and simple and unassuming manner would be
- 3:27very much misled and it turned out that he became a beacon and
- 3:32light for many who chance to come into his aura.
- 3:37Sri Aurobindo writes quote, Self dedication does not depend on
- 3:42the particular work you do, but on the spirit in which all work
- 3:47of whatever kind it may be, is done.
- 3:50Any work done well and carefully as a sacrifice to the Divine,
- 3:56without desire or egoism, with equality of mind and calm,
- 4:01tranquillity and good or bad fortune, for the sake of the
- 4:05Divine and not for the sake of any personal gain, reward or
- 4:10result, with the consciousness that it is the Divine power to
- 4:14which all work belongs, is a means of self dedication through
- 4:20karma. End Quote Reference Srioro Bindu
