Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcast on the Brink, Thursday,
- 0:23Speaker 1: January fifteenth, joined by an old friend of the site,
- 0:30Speaker 1: still a good friend of mine, Tyler Tashman of the
- 0:33Speaker 1: Des Moines Register, one time student writer for Inside the
- 0:37Speaker 1: Hall Not covers the Iowa Hawkeyes before we get to Tyler.
- 0:41Speaker 1: If you enjoy the show over on Spotify, Apple Podcast,
- 0:45Speaker 1: it was a five star rating and review. If you
- 0:47Speaker 1: are watching on YouTube, please like the channel, subscribe to
- 0:53Speaker 1: like the video, subscribe to the channel. We're on our
- 0:55Speaker 1: way to ten thousand subscribers. I think Little Ulson seven
- 0:58Speaker 1: hundred there. The great run for football, this falling into
- 1:04Speaker 1: the winner has really helped us there. So appreciate everyone
- 1:08Speaker 1: following along there watching the press conferences. The support is
- 1:13Speaker 1: again very appreciated. Tyler, you're joining us from a hotel
- 1:19Speaker 1: I believe, not sure exactly where, but you were in
- 1:22Speaker 1: Mackie Arena last night for a really good game. I
- 1:25Speaker 1: watched most of it. Purdue beats Iowa seventy nine seventy two.
- 1:30Speaker 1: For those unfamiliar with what Tyler is doing now covering
- 1:33Speaker 1: the Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball. So we're going to
- 1:36Speaker 1: talk some basketball with the Hotkeys coming to Bloomington this weekend.
- 1:40Speaker 1: We're also going to talk some IU football because Tyler
- 1:43Speaker 1: covered IU football he was a student at IU, and
- 1:45Speaker 1: he also covered the Iowa Indiana game, which is I
- 1:49Speaker 1: believe one of the closest, if the not closest, maybe
- 1:53Speaker 1: the Ohio State game. The Iowa Indiana football game was
- 1:57Speaker 1: as close to a test as Indiana got this season.
- 1:59Speaker 1: But Tyler, welcome back to the show. How's it going good.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I'm coming live from West Lafayette, Indiana fan's favorite place
- 2:09Speaker 2: in the world. So yeah, it was a loud atmosphere
- 2:13Speaker 2: last night, and Iowa kind of ran out of gas.
- 2:17Speaker 2: They played much better than I thought they were. But
- 2:20Speaker 2: lots of lots going on on your end from an
- 2:22Speaker 2: Indiana perspective, I'm sure. So I'm glad to glad to
- 2:25Speaker 2: be back. And you call me an old friend, or
- 2:27Speaker 2: you call me old. I thought I was still pretty young.
- 2:30Speaker 1: You're getting older but not old yet, so I know
- 2:34Speaker 1: if you're old, I'm really old.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I was getting a haircut the other day and they
- 2:38Speaker 2: they my barber found a gray hair and I was
- 2:41Speaker 2: just like, man, cut that off immediately.
- 2:43Speaker 1: So man, I'm past the point of no return on that.
- 2:48Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean that that game last night. You know,
- 2:52Speaker 1: I had commented earlier in the season when Iowa played
- 2:55Speaker 1: at Michigan State that it wasn't just a very esthetically
- 2:58Speaker 1: pleasing game to watch in any way because both teams
- 3:00Speaker 1: were just beating each other up. I thought last night,
- 3:03Speaker 1: in terms of Big Ten games I've watched this season,
- 3:05Speaker 1: was one of the more entertaining games. You know, Iowa
- 3:08Speaker 1: came out the first half, shot the ball really well
- 3:11Speaker 1: from the peribter. You kind of wondered if they were
- 3:13Speaker 1: gonna be able to sustain that in the second half.
- 3:15Speaker 1: They were going to have to really continue to shoot
- 3:17Speaker 1: the ball really well in the second half to win.
- 3:19Speaker 1: But Perdue, just at home is really tough, made you know,
- 3:23Speaker 1: three or four more plays and that's ultimately the difference.
- 3:25Speaker 1: But for an Iowa team now that comes to Bloomington
- 3:30Speaker 1: on three straight losses, what's where are they at just
- 3:33Speaker 1: as a team right now? And what can we expect
- 3:34Speaker 1: to see from this group when they come to Assembly
- 3:36Speaker 1: Hall on Saturday.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, So the Perdue game, they they actually went on
- 3:40Speaker 2: a ten to ozer run in the second half, took
- 3:42Speaker 2: a nine point lead, and then things kind of slipped away,
- 3:45Speaker 2: but they held Braden Smith scoreless in the first half.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It was kind of jarring to watch because he just
- 3:50Speaker 2: looked totally out of rhythm and kind of like a
- 3:52Speaker 2: shell of what you expect him to be. Then he
- 3:55Speaker 2: turned it on in the second half had sixteen points.
- 3:57Speaker 2: That's so the way that game went was sort of
- 4:01Speaker 2: the narrative of Iowa season in a sense where they're
- 4:05Speaker 2: able to put up a fight against some of these powerhouses,
- 4:09Speaker 2: but they're not able to close the deal. They took
- 4:12Speaker 2: Iowa State down to the wire on the road, who
- 4:15Speaker 2: they just lost their first game of the season against Kansas,
- 4:18Speaker 2: and then a Purdue team that has, you know, only
- 4:20Speaker 2: lost one game to Iowa State. They took them down
- 4:23Speaker 2: to the wire and weren't able to finish the deal
- 4:25Speaker 2: i was I would losses have come to Michigan, State, Illinois, Purdue.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I Was State the only outlier, so obviously those are
- 4:34Speaker 2: really good teams. The only outlier was a loss at Minnesota,
- 4:37Speaker 2: which Indiana is familiar with. But they've lost. The teams
- 4:41Speaker 2: for the most part that they've lost to have been
- 4:43Speaker 2: really good. On the other side of things, they don't
- 4:45Speaker 2: really have a signature win, yet similar to Indiana as well.
- 4:48Speaker 2: So this is if this is sounding kind of familiar,
- 4:51Speaker 2: it's because it is. They're, you know, both programs. Obviously
- 4:54Speaker 2: with first year head coaches, there's some athletic and physical
- 5:00Speaker 2: deficiencies compared to other teams in the Big Ten. So
- 5:04Speaker 2: similar trajectory to Indiana in a sense where I think
- 5:09Speaker 2: I would maybe there's a little bit more optimism just
- 5:11Speaker 2: because there's a little bit more leeway just in terms
- 5:15Speaker 2: of the expectations of the program. But I was coming
- 5:18Speaker 2: into Bloomington losing three in a row. Minnesota was the
- 5:22Speaker 2: one that you kind of that's the biggest disappointment of
- 5:25Speaker 2: the season thus far. But then iowall lose this to
- 5:28Speaker 2: Illinois by single digits perdue by single digits, and and
- 5:31Speaker 2: that kind of has snowballed in the three game losing
- 5:33Speaker 2: street where they're trying to change at in Bloomington.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to ask you just the parallels
- 5:39Speaker 1: between these teams this season when you kind of look
- 5:41Speaker 1: at the rosters. The more I've watched Indiana, and I
- 5:46Speaker 1: know you've watched them a good amount too, and I
- 5:48Speaker 1: know you've watched Iowa every game, but both of these
- 5:51Speaker 1: teams feel like with their surpout liars. Obviously, Lamar Wilkerson's
- 5:55Speaker 1: playing it probably a second or third team All Big
- 5:57Speaker 1: Ten level. Bennett Sturtz is playing at an All American level,
- 6:00Speaker 1: probably going to be a top fifteen pick in the
- 6:02Speaker 1: draft based on what mock draft should look at for
- 6:05Speaker 1: next summer. But outside of those two guys, really you
- 6:09Speaker 1: look at these rosters and you say, there's a lot
- 6:12Speaker 1: of pieces that probably aren't normally on a Big Ten roster.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And I'm curious as you watch these teams, is that
- 6:21Speaker 1: kind of the biggest hurdle that both of these coaches
- 6:23Speaker 1: are going to have to overcome in the next couple
- 6:24Speaker 1: of years when they build the programs, is really upgrading
- 6:27Speaker 1: the talent, because for the most part, they've got a
- 6:29Speaker 1: bunch of bit major guys trying to compete at the
- 6:32Speaker 1: high major level. And in some games you kind of
- 6:35Speaker 1: mentioned it, same thing with Indiana, I would you know,
- 6:39Speaker 1: they beat a lot of the teams that maybe have
- 6:43Speaker 1: similar talent or less talent, but when they go up
- 6:45Speaker 1: against a team with more talent or maybe an inside presence,
- 6:49Speaker 1: it's much harder for them to compete.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, there's similarities. I think there's also some differences because
- 6:56Speaker 2: it's weird when we talked when we previewed this Indian
- 7:00Speaker 2: and Iowa game last season, it was like, can I
- 7:03Speaker 2: will make enough threes and can Indiana or can I
- 7:07Speaker 2: will kind of hold up on the inside and uh,
- 7:10Speaker 2: And now it's kind of reverse a little bit, where
- 7:13Speaker 2: Indiana is kind of just chucking threes and hoping for
- 7:17Speaker 2: the best and i was is a much slower pace.
- 7:20Speaker 2: They're are more defense oriented. So it's the teams are
- 7:25Speaker 2: similar in a sense but also different. And Indiana didn't
- 7:28Speaker 2: have the benefit of Ben McCollum brought six Drake transfers,
- 7:32Speaker 2: so there was a lot of continuity there and guys
- 7:35Speaker 2: who have experienced playing together, whereas Indiana, you know, Tucker
- 7:40Speaker 2: Derees and Darren Devrees obviously have that that familiarity, but
- 7:44Speaker 2: it was guys from a bunch of different rosters that
- 7:47Speaker 2: didn't have that experience playing as a as a more
- 7:51Speaker 2: collective unit. Now, obviously I was sprinkled in transfers elsewhere,
- 7:55Speaker 2: but the styles of play are vastly different than than
- 7:59Speaker 2: what we've seen. But there are similarities in the sense
- 8:02Speaker 2: of just not being quite fit for you know, the
- 8:06Speaker 2: Big Ten level. From a physicality standpoint, it's weird because
- 8:09Speaker 2: it feels like it's sort of a one to eighty
- 8:11Speaker 2: Indiana wise, like they were so interior oriented under Mike Woodson,
- 8:16Speaker 2: whether that be Trace Jackson, Davis or Omar Ballo Malik
- 8:19Speaker 2: renew And now I mean, I think Indiana fans are
- 8:23Speaker 2: desperate for a Malik Renewer Omar Ballo on the inside,
- 8:27Speaker 2: and and it's kind of flipped.
- 8:28Speaker 1: So it's it's interesting to see.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I mean, it's definitely more geared toward the modern game,
- 8:33Speaker 2: perimeter oriented. But now you know, Indiana is just really
- 8:36Speaker 2: lacking that inside presence whereas I was is similar in
- 8:40Speaker 2: that sense, they haven't They don't have kind of that
- 8:43Speaker 2: six' eleven bruiser that you really need in The Big
- 8:47Speaker 2: ten to be.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Successful so do you think that's really something that both
- 8:53Speaker 1: of these programs are gonna have to address going? Forward
- 8:56Speaker 1: OR i, know you know more about the philosophy Of
- 8:59Speaker 1: ben McCollum in terms of how he wants to build a.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Team but the More i've watched This indiana team With
- 9:04Speaker 1: Reed bailey And Samuel lexis against let's, say A, purdue
- 9:09Speaker 1: A Michigan state Of michigan that combination is not going
- 9:12Speaker 1: to be good enough and the, Inside And i'm curious
- 9:15Speaker 1: how you think both of these teams moving, forward programs
- 9:18Speaker 1: are going to have to rethink the. Interior do you
- 9:22Speaker 1: think it's going to be a situation where they're going
- 9:24Speaker 1: to have to go out and get maybe not a
- 9:26Speaker 1: guy that they look to throw the ball and post,
- 9:28Speaker 1: up but in terms of rebounding and shot, blocking it
- 9:30Speaker 1: seems like both of these teams are really going to
- 9:32Speaker 1: need to upgrade in that area moving forward if they
- 9:34Speaker 1: want to be one of the top ten teams in
- 9:36Speaker 1: The Big. TEN i think there's a balance you can.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Strike for, example right Now indiana feels like it's gone
- 9:41Speaker 1: from one extreme to the. Other BUT i think having
- 9:44Speaker 1: some semblance of just a guy who can grab a
- 9:48Speaker 1: defensive rebound more consistently and a guy that can at
- 9:51Speaker 1: least alter some shots and be the turn at the
- 9:53Speaker 1: rim is kind of a necessity if you want to
- 9:55Speaker 1: compete at least at the very top of The Big.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Ten and you have to realize, too like it's these
- 9:59Speaker 2: coaches coming, in it's not easy to put together a
- 10:03Speaker 2: roster as quickly as you have, to, like and that's
- 10:05Speaker 2: where another similarity is both of them basically inherited nothing
- 10:10Speaker 2: LIKE i mean there was maybe For iowa they had two,
- 10:13Speaker 2: returners only one of them was a scholarship, guy but
- 10:16Speaker 2: both of them were essentially starting at ground zero and
- 10:19Speaker 2: having to build a roster from the, top from the bottom.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Up so it's not, like you, Know indiana has more
- 10:26Speaker 2: resources Than. IOWA i don't think that's a. Secret they
- 10:29Speaker 2: have a bigger name brand and that type of, stuff
- 10:32Speaker 2: but it's not like it's you, know that's just part
- 10:35Speaker 2: of the the way that the environment. Is now when
- 10:39Speaker 2: you come in as a head, coach you're gonna have
- 10:41Speaker 2: to build things from the bottom and that's what both
- 10:43Speaker 2: of these programs have had to. Do AND i think
- 10:45Speaker 2: you're seeing some roster building weaknesses because of the fact
- 10:50Speaker 2: that they just had to put things together as best
- 10:52Speaker 2: as they, could and For iowa in, particular moving, forward
- 10:56Speaker 2: the two biggest needs ALREADY i can tell in the
- 10:58Speaker 2: off season are size and, Talent like you need to upgrade.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Talent you need to get some talent at the, level
- 11:06Speaker 2: at the big ten type, level and then you need.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Size you need some more physical interior, presence and you,
- 11:14Speaker 2: know most of the players ON i was, roster similar To,
- 11:17Speaker 2: indiana didn't begin their career at The power conference. Level
- 11:21Speaker 2: the guy that was most experienced on eye what the
- 11:24Speaker 2: power conference level coming into this season Was Brendan. Hauson
- 11:27Speaker 2: he barely even. Plays he had played At villanova In Kansas.
- 11:30Speaker 2: State it's kind of been a weird storyline that he
- 11:32Speaker 2: hasn't played a whole. Lot fans are are wondering about.
- 11:36Speaker 2: It ben McCom has kind of not given a great
- 11:38Speaker 2: answer to. It but and then the second most experienced
- 11:42Speaker 2: player Was Cooper, kotch who was a red shirt freshman
- 11:44Speaker 2: last year or he read shirted last, year played just ten.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Games so that speaks to the fact that like, these you,
- 11:49Speaker 2: know these aren't necessarily Like big ten type, rosters and
- 11:53Speaker 2: that's just the fact, that you, know these coaches kind
- 11:56Speaker 2: of had to do their best to put together rosters
- 11:58Speaker 2: in a short time.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Frame, yeah it's not, easy you. Know part of the
- 12:04Speaker 1: problem right, now obviously In indiana Is Kurt signette is
- 12:06Speaker 1: making it look, easy and as we, know what he
- 12:10Speaker 1: is doing is in many ways one of the most
- 12:14Speaker 1: improbable stories ever in college. Sports and so obviously people are,
- 12:19Speaker 1: wondering you know why isn't this easy for basketball to
- 12:22Speaker 1: make a? Turn And i'm not saying That Darren derees
- 12:26Speaker 1: is or is not going to work out as a,
- 12:28Speaker 1: coach and the same thing any. COACH i, mean it's
- 12:30Speaker 1: hard to tell in the first, year BUT i think
- 12:32Speaker 1: when you have the backdrop of in this part of
- 12:35Speaker 1: the country where we, are you look At Pat kelsey
- 12:37Speaker 1: came in last season That louisville made the, Tournament Mark
- 12:41Speaker 1: pope came in At kentucky made A sweet, sixteen And
- 12:44Speaker 1: indiana fans are kind of wondering the same thing as
- 12:48Speaker 1: like if this team doesn't make the tournament or barely squeaks,
- 12:50Speaker 1: in like was something? Wrong BUT i think you also
- 12:53Speaker 1: have to have some context just in terms of the
- 12:55Speaker 1: difficulty of when you go in the portal and any,
- 13:00Speaker 1: ways you're kind of rolling the dice on a lot
- 13:02Speaker 1: of these. Guys you're building a relationship with them in
- 13:04Speaker 1: such a quick amount of, Time you're hoping that some
- 13:08Speaker 1: pieces will fit. Together and one of the problems right,
- 13:11Speaker 1: now And i'm not sure how this is In iowa
- 13:13Speaker 1: in terms of their depth BECAUSE i haven't really studied
- 13:15Speaker 1: them as close to, yet having not written the, preview
- 13:18Speaker 1: But indiana's got a situation where they've got five of
- 13:21Speaker 1: their thirteen scholarship players have basically contributed nothing this, season
- 13:24Speaker 1: and so the depth is pretty. LIMITED i think that's
- 13:26Speaker 1: kind of one of the things with the portal is
- 13:28Speaker 1: you don't necessarily know what you're going to, Get WHEREAS
- 13:32Speaker 1: i do think An iowa, situation being able to bring
- 13:35Speaker 1: those players From drake and having a familiarity with them
- 13:37Speaker 1: has kind of given them a leg. Up so maybe
- 13:41Speaker 1: that's a little bit why they have a bit of
- 13:43Speaker 1: a higher upside this. Season because McCollum has had these
- 13:46Speaker 1: guys in the, system he's been more familiar with, them
- 13:48Speaker 1: AND i think kind of looking back at When derez
- 13:52Speaker 1: came over From West, virginia kind of the one THING
- 13:54Speaker 1: i think people question was the fact that he only
- 13:57Speaker 1: Brought tucker and didn't really bring any of his high school,
- 14:01Speaker 1: signees and so that kind of put him a little
- 14:04Speaker 1: bit behind. Too But i'm just, curious when we go
- 14:07Speaker 1: into this game On, saturday in your, mind what are
- 14:10Speaker 1: the two or three things to watch for on the
- 14:12Speaker 1: actual court that will ultimately determine the.
- 14:15Speaker 2: OUTCOME i was got to figure out how to Run
- 14:18Speaker 2: indian off the three point line because THAT i, mean
- 14:20Speaker 2: it seems kind of like With indiana's feast or, famine
- 14:23Speaker 2: whether if they're able to hit, threes they have some
- 14:27Speaker 2: serious momentum to. Them if they're, not then there's not
- 14:31Speaker 2: a whole lot that they can turn. To SO i
- 14:33Speaker 2: would being able to defend the three point, line and
- 14:36Speaker 2: in Particular Lamar wilkerson because he can just really get
- 14:39Speaker 2: on a, heater SO i was been it's been a
- 14:43Speaker 2: major difference Because ben McCollum puts a major emphasis on,
- 14:47Speaker 2: defense which was very clearly not an emphasis under the pass.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Regime so that's been something new to For iowa fans
- 14:55Speaker 2: to kind of digest and seat. Unfold but it hasn't
- 15:00Speaker 2: the defense against better, competition like Against, illinois Against, purdue
- 15:04Speaker 2: it hasn't been as good as it was against the
- 15:07Speaker 2: lower level, competition which again IS i think just a
- 15:10Speaker 2: product of the fact that it's guys taking a step
- 15:13Speaker 2: up in. Competition what other things to, WATCH i, Mean Bennett,
- 15:17Speaker 2: sturtz you, know can Can indiana contain? Him it's kind
- 15:20Speaker 2: of been a little rocky road in the sense that
- 15:24Speaker 2: like if you, know if he's if guys aren't making
- 15:28Speaker 2: plays around, him Then iowa doesn't have a whole lot
- 15:31Speaker 2: to turn to because they don't they don't have a
- 15:33Speaker 2: legit number two option outside of. Him like some games
- 15:36Speaker 2: It's Tavon, banks who was The Missouri Valley conference Sixth
- 15:40Speaker 2: man of The year last. Season in some games it's
- 15:43Speaker 2: Cam manniaw who played At drake as well last. Season
- 15:46Speaker 2: so it's not they don't have like an established number two.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Option and THEN i think just the fact of like
- 15:52Speaker 2: both of these teams probably will be playing with the
- 15:54Speaker 2: level of. DESPERATION i, mean this is this is a
- 15:57Speaker 2: pretty big game In january for for both teams THAT
- 16:00Speaker 2: i was trying to avoid a four game losing streak
- 16:03Speaker 2: and going into, this they had a three game stretch
- 16:06Speaker 2: here Against Illinois perdue In, indiana AND i felt like
- 16:08Speaker 2: a realistic barometer would BE i would going one and
- 16:12Speaker 2: two and they're zeroing to now that they still have
- 16:14Speaker 2: a chance to hit that by Beating, indiana and this
- 16:16Speaker 2: feels like kind of an early turning point for both
- 16:20Speaker 2: teams of can you? WIN i hate to call it
- 16:23Speaker 2: must win game In, january but like who's going to
- 16:26Speaker 2: play With who's going to be the tougher, Team who's
- 16:28Speaker 2: going to be able to make those little plays down the.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Stretch from What i've, SEEN i Think iowa is the tougher.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Team that's kind of one Of ben McCollum's calling cards
- 16:36Speaker 2: in terms of getting his guys to play with a
- 16:38Speaker 2: lot of intensity and a lot of, fire and that's
- 16:41Speaker 2: what The iowa fan base Has it's been a welcome
- 16:45Speaker 2: thing that The iowa fan base has. Seen BUT i
- 16:48Speaker 2: think that that might be a major key in the
- 16:49Speaker 2: game is just who can kind of make plays down
- 16:51Speaker 2: the stretch and be the tougher.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Team, YEAH i, mean you never want to call a
- 16:55Speaker 1: game in mid Mid january must. Win BUT i think
- 16:58Speaker 1: for both, teams if they hope to make THE ncaa
- 17:01Speaker 1: tournament right, now neither one of them have what you
- 17:05Speaker 1: would call a great. Resume. Win they've got, wins but
- 17:09Speaker 1: there's nothing that really stands out on the. RESUME i
- 17:11Speaker 1: think in the, preseason you, thought you, know with What
- 17:15Speaker 1: indiana was Playing Kansas state And, marquette you thought maybe
- 17:18Speaker 1: one of those teams would pan out to be. Decent
- 17:21Speaker 1: they both turned out to be not very. Good AND
- 17:23Speaker 1: i think WHAT i would Beat old miss right at one,
- 17:25Speaker 1: point but they've not turned out to be very good.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Either so For, IOWA i, mean going on the road
- 17:31Speaker 1: and beat in The indiana will definitely be a quad one.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Win it would be a resume. Win but For, indiana
- 17:38Speaker 1: they've already lost a One Big ten home, game they
- 17:40Speaker 1: lose another, one you still Have purdue In Michigan state.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Coming you kind of look at the schedule the rest
- 17:45Speaker 1: of the way and you, say, realistically to make the,
- 17:47Speaker 1: tournament you're probably gonna have to get to Ten big ten.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Wins they've got three right, now and if they can't
- 17:53Speaker 1: win this, GAME i have a hard time seeing them
- 17:56Speaker 1: get to Ten big ten wins giving themselves a chance
- 17:59Speaker 1: to make the. Tournament agree with, you it's A it's
- 18:01Speaker 1: an important game for both. Teams we'll see it'd BE
- 18:04Speaker 1: i think an interesting atmosphere In. Bloomington the students will be,
- 18:08Speaker 1: back so we'll see how they turn. Out that they
- 18:10Speaker 1: can obviously change things in that building and make it.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Difficult But iowa just went to in my, opinion the,
- 18:15Speaker 1: toughest if not one of the toughest road venues in
- 18:19Speaker 1: The Big ten and hung right in there With. Purdue
- 18:21Speaker 1: the paint crew is obviously always there and has the
- 18:24Speaker 1: place full and a great. Atmosphere so looking forward to
- 18:27Speaker 1: that matchup on On, saturday let's talk some football. Now
- 18:31Speaker 1: obviously With indiana coming up to it still feels crazy
- 18:35Speaker 1: to say playing the national championship game On monday night Against.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Miami what was the last season you were AT iu?
- 18:43Speaker 1: COVERED i know you covered football right in that fall
- 18:45Speaker 1: for The. Star what se was That allen's last season
- 18:49Speaker 1: or second to?
- 18:49Speaker 2: Last it was his second to last. SEASON i covered
- 18:52Speaker 2: the third to last and second to, last which we're
- 18:55Speaker 2: both pretty, bad SO i kind of suffered through some
- 18:58Speaker 2: of the some of the lows of that.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Tenuere so when you covered That Indiana iowa game early
- 19:04Speaker 1: in the, season obviously things were much different in terms
- 19:08Speaker 1: of How indiana is being viewed. Nationally they've obviously went
- 19:13Speaker 1: on to have many big, wins but in many, ways
- 19:18Speaker 1: that was one of the more competitive games that they've
- 19:20Speaker 1: played this. Season why do you think that Was looking
- 19:23Speaker 1: back on, it why do you think that was such
- 19:24Speaker 1: a competitive. Game iowa actually had a chance to win
- 19:28Speaker 1: there in the fourth. Quarter indiana had to make some
- 19:29Speaker 1: plays to escape there with a.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Win, yeah BECAUSE i would Made indiana play their style
- 19:34Speaker 2: Like iowa plays a very you, know lower, possession they're
- 19:39Speaker 2: not going to make a whole lot of, mistakes low,
- 19:41Speaker 2: scoring grinded, out physical type game In, Indiana you've seen
- 19:46Speaker 2: like how they've played Against alabama where it just becomes
- 19:51Speaker 2: that the offense just runs. Wild it becomes just a scoring,
- 19:54Speaker 2: fest even the way that they played Against. Oregon But
- 19:57Speaker 2: iowa was able to Make indiana play the time type
- 20:00Speaker 2: of game that they, wanted low, scoring you, know force
- 20:04Speaker 2: They Fernando mendoza through an interception late in that, game
- 20:08Speaker 2: which really could have sealed the game For, iowa but
- 20:10Speaker 2: they weren't able to take advantage of.
- 20:13Speaker 1: It but that's.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Why that's How iowa was able to make that a,
- 20:16Speaker 2: game was Making indiana play their style and be playing. Physical,
- 20:21Speaker 2: so you, know it's it was a very what if
- 20:24Speaker 2: season For iowa in the sense that they they Took
- 20:28Speaker 2: indiana down to the, wire they Took oregon down to the,
- 20:31Speaker 2: Wire they lost To Iowa state when they were, ranked
- 20:35Speaker 2: and they went on the load on the road and
- 20:38Speaker 2: barely lost TO Usc so they were very you know
- 20:41Speaker 2: it it's a moral victory type, thing which given how
- 20:45Speaker 2: Long Kirk farence has been, there it's some people won't
- 20:47Speaker 2: buy into, that But iowa has shown that it could
- 20:52Speaker 2: play and compete with some of the best teams in the.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Nation this, season they just didn't quite have that juice
- 20:59Speaker 2: to finish the.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Job how surprised of, you as you, know someone that's
- 21:03Speaker 1: now covered The Big ten football for was this your
- 21:07Speaker 1: third third season Covered? Iland, yeah how surprised have you've
- 21:12Speaker 1: been just at What signette has been able to. Do
- 21:15Speaker 1: but you've been to a lot of these venues around the.
- 21:19Speaker 1: League you've seen kind of how you, know it always
- 21:23Speaker 1: the thing that kind of annoyed me most of the
- 21:24Speaker 1: season last couple of two, seasons really is this whole
- 21:27Speaker 1: narrative that you, know it's so much different in THE.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Sec it's so you, know the every team in THE
- 21:32Speaker 1: sec can win a. Game but it was always. Dismissed you,
- 21:35Speaker 1: Know indiana would go and beat these, teams you, know
- 21:37Speaker 1: Like Michigan state last season on the, road they just
- 21:39Speaker 1: absolutely crushed. Them they went TO usc and crushed them last.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Year are YOU ucla last season early and beat. Them
- 21:45Speaker 1: that was kind of one of the first wins of
- 21:48Speaker 1: The signetti era that opened people's. Eyes but it was
- 21:51Speaker 1: always this. Narrative, well, well the teams in The Big
- 21:53Speaker 1: ten at the bottom or are weaker than what's in THE.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Sec and now we kind of see THE sec went
- 22:00Speaker 1: away quietly in the in the, playoff and The Big
- 22:02Speaker 1: ten put two teams in the semi final and has
- 22:05Speaker 1: a team poised to play now for the national. Championship
- 22:08Speaker 1: but What signetti's, DONE i, mean is there any way
- 22:12Speaker 1: to put this in context or you, know just you
- 22:16Speaker 1: watching it covering an Opposing Big ten, Team like what's
- 22:19Speaker 1: been going through your mind watching these last two, seasons
- 22:21Speaker 1: especially this? Year you, know last YEAR i thought many
- 22:23Speaker 1: people thought maybe they caught lightning in a. Bottle but
- 22:25Speaker 1: to do it again this year and be even, better to,
- 22:28Speaker 1: me it's it's as remarkable a story as we've seen
- 22:32Speaker 1: in college.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Sports, EVER i think what's most impressive to me is
- 22:36Speaker 2: like how Easy indiana has made it. Look and it
- 22:40Speaker 2: obviously hasn't been, easy because turning a program from that
- 22:43Speaker 2: low and taking it to the heightst it's been is not,
- 22:46Speaker 2: easy but it just like from an outside, perspective it
- 22:49Speaker 2: has looked so, easy and the fact That indiana for
- 22:52Speaker 2: so long made a living fumbling games basically like not
- 22:58Speaker 2: being able to rise to the, moment and now that's
- 23:01Speaker 2: what they excel. AT i, mean you, know the way
- 23:04Speaker 2: that they were able to pull out the game Against,
- 23:06Speaker 2: iowa the way that they were able to win At,
- 23:09Speaker 2: oregon the way that they Beat Ohio state in The
- 23:12Speaker 2: Big ten. Championship it's like no moment has been too
- 23:16Speaker 2: big For, indiana with the exception Of Ohio state in
- 23:19Speaker 2: the first season and it last, SEASON i should, say
- 23:23Speaker 2: and Then Notre dame on the, road like those are
- 23:25Speaker 2: the two like. Outliers other than, that Like indiana has
- 23:28Speaker 2: met every single challenge and then they've just been bludgeoning teams.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Too it's not like they're just kind of like maybe
- 23:35Speaker 2: this team of destiny that's scraping by everyone and they're
- 23:38Speaker 2: getting a bounced their. Way like they are just straight
- 23:41Speaker 2: up obliterating, teams And signetti puts his foot on the
- 23:44Speaker 2: gas and just doesn't really let. Up so IT'S i,
- 23:48Speaker 2: MEAN i when he came in and you, know he
- 23:50Speaker 2: was talking a big game and came out in assembly
- 23:53Speaker 2: hall and said what he, SAID i was just, LIKE
- 23:56Speaker 2: i Don't i'm not sure this guy knows what he
- 23:58Speaker 2: has coming for. Him Because indiana, football it can be
- 24:02Speaker 2: very humbling in terms of like winning, obviously AND i
- 24:06Speaker 2: thought that this was gonna quite possibly be a pretty
- 24:09Speaker 2: quick face, plan and he has proved me wrong in
- 24:12Speaker 2: every regard because there's just basically from day, one it's
- 24:17Speaker 2: taken off and just been a wild ride in a
- 24:21Speaker 2: very impressive.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Manner, YEAH i think most people probably thought this the
- 24:25Speaker 1: same thing you were thinking when he said the, stuff
- 24:28Speaker 1: AND i think actually a lot of that stuff that
- 24:32Speaker 1: if you followed his press conferences this, year he's not
- 24:34Speaker 1: been that same guy in terms of the image that he.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Projects BUT i think in many ways he felt like
- 24:40Speaker 1: he had to do that because he was coming into
- 24:43Speaker 1: a program that literally was the worst in college football
- 24:46Speaker 1: history in terms of major, programs and he has talked
- 24:50Speaker 1: about the fact that when he got there he didn't
- 24:52Speaker 1: like the feeling that he got people just were kind
- 24:54Speaker 1: of resigned to the fact that they weren't going to
- 24:57Speaker 1: be a winning, program and for him to flip, THAT
- 25:00Speaker 1: i think he felt like he had to go out
- 25:01Speaker 1: there and say like what he actually wanted to. Do
- 25:05Speaker 1: and then it's one thing to say, it but then
- 25:07Speaker 1: to actually back it up and do it is completely.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Different and the thing that's been most impressive to me
- 25:13Speaker 1: is throughout a, season usually you're gonna have a game
- 25:18Speaker 1: or two where something doesn't go your way and you're
- 25:21Speaker 1: gonna have to overcome. Adversity but to their, credit they've
- 25:26Speaker 1: had a lot of really impressive blot. Wins but anytime
- 25:29Speaker 1: things get tight and they have to make a, play they.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Execute AND i think that has a lot to do
- 25:35Speaker 1: with coaching and. Preparation because they don't have the most,
- 25:38Speaker 1: talent they've obviously got really good, Players AND i think
- 25:41Speaker 1: one thing that's taught us more than anything else is
- 25:44Speaker 1: it's great to have these recruiting rankings and these star,
- 25:47Speaker 1: rankings but if you have the right, coach and you
- 25:49Speaker 1: have the right, system and you have the right, mindset
- 25:51Speaker 1: you can win games at a high level no matter
- 25:54Speaker 1: if you, know if you have three, stars two, stars one,
- 25:57Speaker 1: stars if they're playing at the level necessary to. Win
- 26:01Speaker 1: so that to, me the biggest COMPLIMENT i think people give,
- 26:04Speaker 1: them AND i think it's, true is they don't beat.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Themselves if you're gonna beat, them you're gonna have to
- 26:08Speaker 1: do something extraordinary with your level of play in order
- 26:12Speaker 1: to take them off their.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Game, yeah and talking in terms of rising to the,
- 26:16Speaker 2: moment like the one that really comes to mind to
- 26:18Speaker 2: me is The Penn state game With Omar, cooper the
- 26:20Speaker 2: way to the touchdown catch that he, had where Like
- 26:24Speaker 2: indiana is just they just rise to the occasion in
- 26:27Speaker 2: a way that they haven't for so long under the.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Program and and NOW i mean not to switch back
- 26:34Speaker 2: to iwould To indiana, basketball but WHAT i feel, like
- 26:38Speaker 2: and you, know there's definitely you can tell in the
- 26:40Speaker 2: fan base some you, know patients isn't a thing that is,
- 26:44Speaker 2: uh there isn't a surtplus of, PATIENCE i would, say
- 26:47Speaker 2: AND i understand. That but WHAT i think that we're
- 26:51Speaker 2: seeing With indiana basketball right now is just a product
- 26:54Speaker 2: of the fact that they started, over and they started,
- 26:57Speaker 2: over and they started over when you cite go through
- 27:00Speaker 2: coaches the Way indiana has going From Tom crane To
- 27:04Speaker 2: Archie miller To Mike woodson To Darren, derees like this
- 27:07Speaker 2: is kind of the after effects of. It like it's
- 27:09Speaker 2: not a sustainable way for a program to live when
- 27:13Speaker 2: you're constantly moving through coaching, changes and that creates a
- 27:18Speaker 2: sense of frustration because you're starting over so. Often AND
- 27:23Speaker 2: i think that's what we're seeing, now where you, know
- 27:26Speaker 2: there's some growing. Pains BUT i don't Think Darren derees
- 27:30Speaker 2: has afforded the maybe time to grow that you would
- 27:33Speaker 2: out in or the time to kind of work through
- 27:35Speaker 2: growing pains that you would at another. Program and that's
- 27:37Speaker 2: just because The indiana program in a, sense is just
- 27:40Speaker 2: kind of cannibalized. Itself like this is what you get
- 27:44Speaker 2: when you just have to when you keep making changes
- 27:47Speaker 2: and there's a lack of. Stability that's, Like that's one
- 27:49Speaker 2: of the THINGS i hear consistently With iowa football is
- 27:52Speaker 2: how how much players like the, continuity Like Kirk farns
- 27:57Speaker 2: has been there for almost three decades And indiana basketball
- 28:01Speaker 2: just hasn't had. That AND i Get i'm not saying
- 28:05Speaker 2: THAT i That indiana shouldn't have moved on from any
- 28:08Speaker 2: coaches one way or, another But i'm just saying the
- 28:10Speaker 2: reality of the fact is that when you change things
- 28:13Speaker 2: so often like, this this is what's gonna. Happen it's
- 28:16Speaker 2: not realistic to think that you're gonna hit a home
- 28:19Speaker 2: run with a higher like in a way that you
- 28:22Speaker 2: did With, Signetti like there's gonna be growing pains and
- 28:25Speaker 2: when you don't have that runway to kind of get
- 28:27Speaker 2: things moving in the right. Direction this is what's gonna.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Happen. Yeah the More i've thought about just roster building
- 28:33Speaker 1: and modern college basketball the last couple of, days And
- 28:35Speaker 1: i've kind of looked at some of the guys That
- 28:37Speaker 1: indiana has on the bench that aren't contributing anything that
- 28:39Speaker 1: they brought in via the. Portal the More i've come
- 28:41Speaker 1: back to the fact THAT i think to build a,
- 28:44Speaker 1: sustained a sustaining winning program long, term you can't just
- 28:50Speaker 1: be all in the. Portal you have to be able
- 28:53Speaker 1: to AND i think that's one reason Why Trent sisley
- 28:55Speaker 1: is so important for the future of this. Program having
- 28:58Speaker 1: a fresh roun on the team that's actually. PLAYING i
- 28:59Speaker 1: think if you keep him around three or four, years
- 29:02Speaker 1: he can be a player that you can depend on
- 29:04Speaker 1: when he becomes an. Upperclassman it's the same. Thing they've
- 29:07Speaker 1: got two freshmen for next, season potentially looking to add a.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Third like you, know those guys in time could become.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Players my question is is in terms of the portal,
- 29:18Speaker 1: now everyone's in such this win now. Attitude are coach
- 29:22Speaker 1: is going to be given the chance to actually develop
- 29:25Speaker 1: those Guys BECAUSE i Think, devrees, Honestly i've been impressed
- 29:32Speaker 1: three of the new coaches in The Big ten this.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Season i've been really impressed With i've been impressed With.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Medved he had some struggles, early but he's obviously Beat
- 29:38Speaker 1: indiana AND i went. HOME i think he's a good.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Coach he obviously was a proven. Winner devrees did really
- 29:43Speaker 1: good job At. Drake he only had one season At West.
- 29:46Speaker 1: VIRGINIA i think a lot of the things he does
- 29:49Speaker 1: are you, know things that you can win. With and
- 29:52Speaker 1: same thing with. McCallum he's was a great coach at
- 29:55Speaker 1: THE d two. Level he came up to THE d
- 29:57Speaker 1: one ranks last year At, drake but obviously coming up
- 29:59Speaker 1: to the The big, ten it's going to take them
- 30:01Speaker 1: some time to get a. Seat Weet BUT i think
- 30:02Speaker 1: for all these, programs unless you're going to go in
- 30:05Speaker 1: the portal every year and get like four or five,
- 30:08Speaker 1: studs you've got to have some guys that are younger
- 30:11Speaker 1: in your program that you. Developed and that's the THING
- 30:13Speaker 1: i worry about right now WITH iu And devreze is
- 30:16Speaker 1: is he going to be given the. Patience is he
- 30:18Speaker 1: going to be given the time to develop some of
- 30:21Speaker 1: these younger players and see how they are in a
- 30:23Speaker 1: year or. Two and right now everyone's obviously distracted by
- 30:26Speaker 1: the football, season but that's going to change here in
- 30:29Speaker 1: a couple of weeks when the season ends and people
- 30:31Speaker 1: start paying more attention to. BASKETBALL i just hope people
- 30:35Speaker 1: with all these coaches realize that it's not as easy
- 30:38Speaker 1: as just collecting guys, talent putting them out there and winning. Games.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Yeah, well, so for, One indiana is in a little
- 30:47Speaker 2: bit of a fish bowl just because of that's the
- 30:49Speaker 2: way that the eyes on the program and the history
- 30:53Speaker 2: and all. That but in a bigger, picture it's just
- 30:57Speaker 2: how college athletics and pro spars are now where there's
- 31:02Speaker 2: just not a lot of. Patients LIKE i, mean you
- 31:04Speaker 2: look at someone Like Deshaun, foster THE ucla head coach
- 31:08Speaker 2: didn't make it through two seasons AT ucla before getting,
- 31:10Speaker 2: Fired Jonathan smith At Michigan state who got fired after
- 31:16Speaker 2: two seasons At Michigan. State like there's a very quick
- 31:19Speaker 2: hook these. Days and you, know it's funny because Like ben,
- 31:22Speaker 2: McCullum for, instance he was under five hundred in his
- 31:25Speaker 2: first two seasons At Northwest Missouri state as their head,
- 31:28Speaker 2: coach and it was like in this day and, age
- 31:31Speaker 2: he might not have survived, That like he might have been,
- 31:33Speaker 2: fired he might have never been able to. Win he
- 31:36Speaker 2: won Four division two national. Titles goes To drake as
- 31:39Speaker 2: a thirty one and four season now To. Iowa like
- 31:41Speaker 2: some of these stories may not, Happen like maybe If
- 31:46Speaker 2: Michigan state had held on To Jonathan, smith and it's
- 31:49Speaker 2: very likely that this wouldn't have, happened but maybe that
- 31:51Speaker 2: he would become a great coach and really Lead Michigan
- 31:54Speaker 2: state to. Success but you just don't know because it's
- 31:57Speaker 2: so reactionary these. Days and that's that's just kind of
- 32:01Speaker 2: how the business is. Now and there's there's LIKE i,
- 32:03Speaker 2: said there's not a lot of, patients but it's something
- 32:05Speaker 2: that it's how. It's coaches are going to have to
- 32:08Speaker 2: work around it BECAUSE i don't think it's going to.
- 32:11Speaker 2: CHANGE i mean that's up to the decision makers like
- 32:13Speaker 2: ads and and professional sports owners and things like. That
- 32:18Speaker 2: but it's just part of the way sports. Is you,
- 32:20Speaker 2: know there's just not a whole lot of runway afforded
- 32:23Speaker 2: to kind of get your feet wet and grow and
- 32:27Speaker 2: deal with some of the you, know ups and. Downs you,
- 32:30Speaker 2: know it's kind of like a win now. Mentality and
- 32:33Speaker 2: what's not made it better is the way the Way
- 32:35Speaker 2: signetti has done, it because now everyone is, pointing, Hey
- 32:37Speaker 2: Kurt signetti did, it why can't We, well that's like
- 32:40Speaker 2: a one in a, million you, KNOW i think one
- 32:43Speaker 2: in a million type. Deal and AND i don't think
- 32:46Speaker 2: it's a good idea to compare the success of a
- 32:50Speaker 2: program To indiana football at any, level because it's just
- 32:54Speaker 2: not a it's just not a sound, comparison because what
- 32:56Speaker 2: he's doing is just so.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Otherworldly, yeah a couple of more to. GO i went
- 33:00Speaker 1: to THE espn dot com home page and it was
- 33:03Speaker 1: some story about identifying the Next Kurt, signetti And i'm
- 33:05Speaker 1: thinking to, myself there's probably not Another Kurt. SIGNETTI i,
- 33:09Speaker 1: mean there's gonna, be obviously coaches that come in and
- 33:12Speaker 1: really win at a high. Level but what he's been
- 33:14Speaker 1: able to, do AS i, said most remarkable story in
- 33:17Speaker 1: college sports THAT i can, remember at least recent. MEMORY i,
- 33:21Speaker 1: mean there's obviously been a lot of great things to,
- 33:22Speaker 1: happen but you in college, FOOTBALL i mean there's Been
- 33:27Speaker 1: look at how Long oregon's been chasing a national. Championship
- 33:30Speaker 1: look at how Long Notre, dame you, know has been
- 33:32Speaker 1: trying to work towards The National. Championship If signetti wins
- 33:36Speaker 1: it On, monday it's gonna, be you, know head scratching
