- 0:11Hello friends. It's Sean.
- 0:13Here it is Monday, it's the 25th of May, and this is me
- 0:18attempting to be as perky as the background music.
- 0:21At the start of the podcast I had someone message me saying,
- 0:24Sean, I think this music is like the perfect representation of
- 0:29who you are. So I'm not quite sure how to
- 0:31take that. I'm going to go with Perky.
- 0:35I hope you're doing well at the start of this new week as you
- 0:39and I continue on this spectacular journey into the
- 0:44growth of the new church as we see Jesus through his Spirit,
- 0:48growing his people, growing this church at this unbelievable rate
- 0:52and working out what does it mean to be a disciple, a
- 0:57follower of Jesus in this really tough, harsh world of the Roman
- 1:02Empire and beyond. And so that is what are we going
- 1:05to be covering over the next few weeks as we read through the
- 1:08story, as we hear these incredible apostles going out
- 1:12and just having their minds blown with what the Holy Spirit
- 1:16has in mind, with who is included and how this new
- 1:21Kingdom will be. So why don't you join me,
- 1:23friends? Holy Spirit, come open up our
- 1:27hearts, teach us who you are so that we can encounter you in a
- 1:32new and fresh way today. All right, friends, let us read
- 1:37together Acts Chapter 4. While Peter and John were
- 1:51speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests,
- 1:54the captain of the temple guard and some of the Sadducees.
- 1:58These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John
- 2:02were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a
- 2:05resurrection of the dead. They arrested them and since it
- 2:09was already evening, put them in gaol until morning.
- 2:12But many of the people who heard their message believed it so.
- 2:16The number of men who believed now totalled about 5000.
- 2:21The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and
- 2:24teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem.
- 2:28Annus, the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John
- 2:32Alexander and other relatives of the high priest.
- 2:36They brought in the two disciples and demanded By what
- 2:39power or in whose name have you done this?
- 2:43And Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, rulers and
- 2:47elders of our people, are we being questioned today because
- 2:51we've done a good deed for a crippled man?
- 2:54Do you want to know how he was healed?
- 2:56Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of
- 3:00Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ,
- 3:06the Nazarene, the man you crucified, but whom God raised
- 3:10from the dead. For Jesus is the one referred to
- 3:13in the Scriptures when it says, the stone that you builders
- 3:17rejected has now become the cornerstone.
- 3:21There is salvation in no one else.
- 3:24God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be
- 3:28saved. The members of the council were
- 3:31amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for
- 3:35they could see that they were ordinary men, but no special
- 3:38training in the Scriptures. They also recognised them as men
- 3:42who had been with Jesus. But since they could see the man
- 3:45who had been healed standing right there among them, there
- 3:48was nothing the council could say.
- 3:51So they ordered Peter and John out of the council chamber and
- 3:54conferred among themselves. What should we do with these
- 3:58men? They asked each other.
- 4:00We can't deny that they've performed A miraculous sign and
- 4:04everybody in Jerusalem knows about it, but to keep them from
- 4:07spreading their propaganda any further, we must warn them not
- 4:11to speak to anyone in Jesus name again.
- 4:16So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never
- 4:20again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.
- 4:24But Peter and John replied, Do you think God wants us to obey
- 4:29you rather than him? We cannot stop telling people
- 4:33about everything we have seen and heard.
- 4:36The council then threatened them further, but they finally let
- 4:40them go because they didn't know how to punish them without
- 4:43starting a riot. For everyone was praising God
- 4:46for this miraculous sign, the healing of a man who had been
- 4:50lame for more than 40 years. As soon as they were freed,
- 4:55Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them
- 4:58what their leading priests and elders had said.
- 5:01When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their
- 5:04voices together in prayer to God.
- 5:06O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea and
- 5:11everything in them. You spoke long ago by the Holy
- 5:15Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, Why
- 5:19were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time
- 5:23with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepared
- 5:27for battle. The rulers gathered together
- 5:30against the Lord and against His Messiah.
- 5:34In fact, this has happened here in this very city, for Herod
- 5:38Antipus, Pontius Pilate, the governor, the Gentiles, and the
- 5:43people of Israel were all united against Jesus, Your holy
- 5:47servant, whom you anointed. But everything they did was
- 5:51determined beforehand according to Your will.
- 5:55And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, Your
- 5:58servants, great boldness in preaching Your Word, stretching
- 6:03out Your hand with healing power.
- 6:05May miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of Your
- 6:09holy servant, Jesus. After this prayer, the meeting
- 6:14place shook and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 6:19Then they preached the Word of God with boldness.
- 6:24All the believers were united in heart and mind, and they felt
- 6:28that what they owned was not their own, so they shared
- 6:31everything they had. The apostles testified
- 6:34powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God's
- 6:37great blessing was upon them all.
- 6:40There were no needy people among them because those who owned
- 6:43land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the
- 6:46apostles to give to those in need.
- 6:49For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed
- 6:53Barnabas, which means son of encouragement.
- 6:56He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the land of
- 6:59Cyprus. He sold the field he owned and
- 7:02brought the money to the apostles.
- 7:14Oh Lord, what an inspiration this chapter is to see how this
- 7:19early church rolled, to see how when they came under attack,
- 7:24they came to you on bended knee and prayer.
- 7:27And they didn't pray for protection.
- 7:29They didn't pray for safe passage.
- 7:31They prayed for boldness to be able to continue sharing Your
- 7:35Word effectively. Ah Lord, I pray that You would
- 7:38infect us with a similar spirit of boldness so that as we face
- 7:43opposition, our desire would be for increased boldness to tell
- 7:48of Your great love for us. Because what could be more
- 7:53important than sharing the story of You and what You have done
- 7:57for us and the reality that You have now ushered in for all
- 8:02humankind? Ah, you are a generous,
- 8:05wonderful God, and we just praise you and worship you.
- 8:11And we pray all of this in your wonderful saving name, Jesus,
- 8:15Amen.
