- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: I rebuilt my life after divorce and basically left me completely shatter financially and emotionally, but I learned how to lay off my life and now I'm quitting my job and retire from corporate at 43 years old.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_01]: So now I teach people how to take control of that money and rebound from any situation without overwhelm.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome to the Beat till you see it podcast, where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_03]: I'm also Logan, Ply's instructor and fitness business coach.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_03]: I've trained thousands of people around the world, and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_03]: My friends, action brings clarity.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_03]: and it's the antidote to fear.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_03]: Each week my guess will bring bold, executable, intrinsic, and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and be it till you see it.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_03]: It's a practice, not a perfect, let's get started.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_03]: All right, be it babe.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_03]: This is a interesting conversation you're about to hear because I really was super intrigued by our guests today.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_03]: I got to meet them several months ago, talk without their excited to do.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_03]: They have actually been a listener of the be a pot for a really long time.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_03]: They've been being a telly see it.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_03]: And that's literally why they are sharing what they're doing right now.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_03]: And so I'm super excited for you to hear about Pav and being lay off.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_03]: lay off ready, right?
- 1:32[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's, in my opinion, one more time about laying on getting laid off.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_03]: You guys, we have to.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_03]: We have to.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_03]: Some of you in your beta, you see it, might have to be laid off or might get laid off or might want to be laid off.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_03]: So I think this is a really cool conversation of like preparedness and also like honesty, but what is life?
- 1:53[SPEAKER_03]: What is life we want?
- 1:53[SPEAKER_03]: Like, have movement on us with ourselves?
- 1:55[SPEAKER_03]: And when I got off the call app, we talked about confidence a little bit.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_03]: And so it wasn't recorded, so I kind of wanted to just like bring this in.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_03]: And then I want to hear this amazing episode from Pab and hear her journey in here, which is doing here, such as helping people because I think a lot of people are going to need like layoff proof their life.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_03]: So confidence, you guys, confidence isn't something you are deemed with.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_03]: No one gives it to you.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_03]: It's also not something you can go and get.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_03]: So every time you tell yourself you're going to go for a walk around the block and then you post-pone it to like answer an email You are actually at Gino Way at your confidence But if you go and do the walk Then you are increasing your confidence strength
- 2:41[SPEAKER_03]: A lot of people think, oh, once I'm more confident, then I will do X.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_03]: No, do X and you will become more confident, right?
- 2:51[SPEAKER_03]: So with that said, thank you, Paff, for that wonderful question.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_03]: I'm so sorry you guys, wasn't recorded.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_03]: I hope that little tidbit gets you there.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_03]: And here's Paff, and lay out ready.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_03]: All right, be it babe.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_03]: I'm excited today's topic.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_03]: I think maybe we've touched on it a little bit in people's stories, but never had like someone who's expert at it.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_03]: Someone who's like truly been through the trenches and come on the other side and like has an expertise to share with you and like skill sets and all those things.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_03]: Also, probably one of the coolest beat actions I've ever seen someone do.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_03]: I hope we get into it as well.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_03]: Pav, you are guests today.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_03]: Can you have tell everyone who you are and what you're rocking at?
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I, Leslie, thank you so much for having me.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's been an honor to be here.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: So I am Pavela, Tidman Jones, and the founder of Layoff Ready, and a financial resilience mentor.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: So basically what I do is I help professionals to help build income security and freedom.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: And before that, I was working in corporate just like most people and realized that, you know, finally.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: is the matrix that we kind of like, you know, on to like this hamster wheel and had this moment and eventually got out of it.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, and I revealed to my life after divorce and basically kind of left me completely shatter financially and emotionally, but I learned how to really approve my life.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: And now I'm, you know, quitting my job.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: and retire from corporate at 43 years old.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: So now I teach people how to take control of their money and you know, rebound from any situation without overwhelming and fluff.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I love this.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_03]: First of all, 43 and you're like retired.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_03]: I think you had all of us.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, clearly you're working.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_03]: You created your own thing, but like, you're trying from corporate life.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I think a lot of ears perked up because that's not the option for a lot of people.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_03]: I do want to take a step back because I do love that you share that like, you have gone through divorce.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_03]: You have had to pick up yourself and put all the pieces back together and turn over.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_03]: Like, a lot of people listening to the show, you know, I mean, I hope we have some Gen Z, but most likely, most of them are a little, they're over 40.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_03]: and we have been through things in life and sometimes we can take it really personally and think there's something wrong with us.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_03]: How can we go back and time a little bit?
- 5:07[SPEAKER_03]: Like, how did you pick the pieces up after divorce?
- 5:09[SPEAKER_03]: Like, what did you do to even get yourself to a place?
- 5:12[SPEAKER_03]: Because I can't unless your divorce was 20 years ago, I think it feels like this all happened very quickly that you went from divorced and broke to like retiring from corporate.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and Leslie, thank you so much for asking me this question, and is the one that I've kind of like pondered for so long because you know, like, when we've been through like such dramatic situation like this right like we don't usually reflect on the lesson that we typically learn from so I thought about that so basically, okay, let me just maybe backward on like, okay, my dearest situation so.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_01]: I've been married for about seven years, and then things didn't work out.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think part of this now that I have like my bringing faith in God and the universe, I believe that if you are onto the path that God is not blessing you, that is not your true calling, he would destroy that path.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: And that resulted into my divorce.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, say to myself, that, okay, I cannot be in the situation anymore.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_01]: I need to really do something, or I'm gonna spend the rest of my life crying about what a life that I have not lived, and just like what do you always say, you know, we do it messy, and we, right?
- 6:36[SPEAKER_03]: Life is messy.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, it can't not be.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_03]: You know, like, one of my first assistants was a doula.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_03]: She's like, birth is really messy.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but you know, I think like once you focus on something and then you surrender to God, he will lead the way.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I've believed in.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, with my, with my divorce, in order for me to got them to get a divorce, the first step, my lawyer said, okay, you need to get your baseline ready, you need to do budgeting.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, okay, with an MBA in finance, I didn't know how to do budgeting, which was like,
- 7:13[SPEAKER_01]: So crazy.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll tell you just like would lay off ready.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: I have worked with some of the clients that are like higher up in corporates, and They're the same.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think like the higher up you are you really lie so much on like so-called experts to help with your personal life Life Riley because you are so good at what you do Yeah, so you don't really.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you you neglect what you need to do for yourself because you just totally trust experts and that's kind of how I've always been
- 7:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I had to start from the ground up in terms of, okay, like, what exactly is my knit words without my husband or ex-husband now.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_01]: And it took me six months, Leslie, not because it was hard in the sense that like, oh, all the calculation because I'm like a number person anyway, but the six months to actually feed a few things.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right, to like really gather all the documents and really, okay, this is it, you know, once I submit that paperwork, once I file this, then that's the beginning of
- 8:18[SPEAKER_03]: Like, you know, I thank you for sharing that I think a lot of people don't do things because it really does mean by finishing it, it's marks the end, like that's the end of that, you know, like, whether it's a person who's passed away or a pet that's passed away, like dealing with the their toys and the dog, but it's whatever it is, like, like, like, once it's gone, it's like, well, they're really gone.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_03]: Like there's not even a sign of them around here.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_03]: So, like, going through and figuring it out, like, I can see why you would want to take six months not because the numbers are hard, but because it's hard.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: Just like, yeah, exactly, Leslie and I mean, when you talk about pets, you know, I've been true.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: That same situation too.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I am a procrastinator and that's my new year resolution, which is kind of like slowly getting their same thing like when when my two my two rabbits die from that marriage, you know, they came with me.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_03]: It's also took me six months to like clean up because it was like the last, you know, the last thing of that.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the last.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_03]: Wow, so, okay, so during the six months, did you do anything to kind of help yourself out?
- 9:22[SPEAKER_03]: Did you go, did you stay home and like, wallowed, did you go out?
- 9:26[SPEAKER_03]: Like, how did you like, take care of yourself and get to know yourself?
- 9:29[SPEAKER_03]: Was there anything you'd be at actually having as you did in there?
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh, okay, like shamelessly saying I did absolutely nothing just like wallowing you know being in like my shoe box apartment in New York City because at the time I already moved out of my my house and I didn't really have much in savings at the time because basically when you're married and
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: you know, things are kind of comical in a way.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: So, not so much, you know, that was probably one of the darkest time of my life.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, back to like, what I didn't, what did I learn from that firm, from like, whole process was that the power of budgeting, that's so important.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: And, let me just tell you this Leslie.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: So, after that six months, I decided, okay, like, I need to do something.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: I, I'm going to file that paper and get that budgeting done to me one day.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_03]: Right, right, right, I know it's really funny isn't it so funny like I think we can all like see ourselves and that's I'm like oh my god, I got to write that email.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_03]: I got to go to that thing.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_03]: I got to go and then you go it was like 17 minutes at the DMV.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_03]: That wasn't even that part.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_03]: It just feels so heavy.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, I understand.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_03]: I understand.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so it took me one day of a focus work to get that going and everything and to my surprise when like back to when we were talking about like you know when we surrender to God God actually like help paved the way for you and I found almost half a million dollars in a hidden phone and full when can't count that half a million dollars almost close to yeah my god.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: So when you talk about said it and you forget it, I literally forgotten that and not no joke like serious and the path that's insane.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_03]: So like here you were like broke as a joke on a tiny apartment procrast I just want to like reiterate this that people like stop procrastinating procrastinating and wallowing all these things and you do the paperwork and you have a half a million dollars.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, close enough.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, like my life literally just kind of change overnight, you know, with that one power budget by then you'd learn how to budget.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_01]: So that's great.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_03]: So probably best probably best.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_03]: You had to learn how to budget first.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_01]: So that was basically like my moment that you know my whole life, Leslie like.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, as a woman, and actually not all women, but maybe like the way that I was raised, I always thought that, okay, the only way for me to come in the near to become financially free, I need security of a man to help you.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I think a first of all,
- 12:12[SPEAKER_03]: So in the States, women couldn't get their own credit card until like their 80s, in 1980s, right?
- 12:16[SPEAKER_03]: So like, like in my lifetime, right?
- 12:18[SPEAKER_03]: And I think I can't remember when women were allowed to buy their own homes, but at any of the reason why like people are always like, oh, there's so much divorce now, there's no.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_03]: Women couldn't leave shitty shit because they couldn't own a home, they couldn't often find work, and they certainly couldn't have a credit card.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_03]: So like, yeah, have like, we're of the age where like, like, my mom,
- 12:38[SPEAKER_03]: Like her mom couldn't have a credit card when she was of her own.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_03]: So my mom is the first person and my family that could have her own money.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_03]: So I think a lot of us have that that we're not raised with that.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_03]: And so what you see around you because that first generation of of you, they all had to go through that.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_03]: That's how they were raised.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_03]: So it's completely normal to think that.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_03]: And I think what's really cool is we've now had 40 something years of it.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_03]: So it can change where we
- 13:04[SPEAKER_03]: We all can be billionaires, and then we can marry someone, whether it's a man or woman who also is a millionaire, and then we can have more money that we can do good things with.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, the modern marriage, honestly.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, anything like to you appoint, basically, I think.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: what went through with my life, even though I'm suffer for a long period of time, I felt that it actually was proud of myself that I was able to help like break the generational curse, you know?
- 13:33[SPEAKER_01]: Because now we're like, what you talked about, you know, like there were women's that didn't really have those opportunities.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_01]: No, they weren't loved either.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_03]: Like my
- 13:44[SPEAKER_03]: My gosh, so you get to this place where, like, oh, my gosh, now you're not devastated.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you're devastated from the divorce emotionally, but you're not devastated financially.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_03]: You have you have a jumping off point.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_03]: So can we can we jump ahead to like, how do you go from like, okay?
- 14:00[SPEAKER_03]: I am now I'm going to go, now I have a half million that's not enough to like retire off of today.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_03]: But how do you go from that to like, I'm going to help people be lay off ready because one of the things that like I feel is so topical, we talked about this before it recorded, it's like, there's a lot of people being laid off right now.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_03]: And with AI, which has its own devastating effects, and also great things, we use the AI all the time.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_03]: Like, there's going to be more.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_03]: And so I think like,
- 14:25[SPEAKER_03]: You know, in case someone can't just randomly find an old 401k they forgot about, I believe for mere them.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay, so you have asked so many amazing questions.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: So like, let me break it down.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_01]: So like, number one, you were asking about like, okay, how did they kind of jump start from like, okay, that's a ha moment that do we finally can be my own rich man or at least the starting point until like, okay, helping people, right?
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: So I think like ever since then, I realized that, okay, now I can be my own rich man that I cannot rely on the security of a man to, you don't have to, for anything, right?
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: We would love to find my soulmate.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, our soulmates.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I love to have a rest husband again, but you know, better version.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, but I think in our first instance, then I realized the power of financial literacy.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: And
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: and, you know, really becoming my own person because I always had little service theme, Leslie, you know, I think it's just kind of like, what we talk about the generational curse.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, since then, I started like, okay, studying, investing, personal finance, you know, make sure that, okay, like, by the way, I don't think that I dropped that bomb on you yet, but I also, like, with that marriage, I had about $100,000 dead.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: With the money that I found, even though I had a full one car, you cannot liquidate the whole thing, right?
- 15:50[SPEAKER_01]: Because new pace or much task.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_00]: There's rules.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I have a lot.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's like, if you have my name, but it's not your money.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right, right, right.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_01]: So okay, so I had to find a way to like supplement that how can I make more money.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: So like one is okay, I already have a copper job is good pain, but obviously it didn't really help fund my entire lifestyle because like I used to live large, but now on my own, I need to like okay, number one downsize my life a little bit more, you know, like I can't really go to like treat Michelin Star on a Friday, you know, if I want to these days,
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: Let me forewarn you.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't apply to everyone, but for me, I actually strategically leverage debt to help me pay debt.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_03]: Heck yeah, girl.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_03]: Are you kidding?
- 16:41[SPEAKER_03]: I haven't had one come in the mail, but I definitely, when I was like getting out of homelessness.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_03]: And anyway, back on my feet, I was like, oh, this card will let me.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_03]: be to interest rate for 18 months.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_03]: Heck yeah, we're taking this card.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_03]: Move all this dead over.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_03]: So now I'm actually paying it off.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_03]: And now I have 18 months to pay this off.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, yes.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_03]: I hear you.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_03]: I agree with you.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_03]: But because there is better, there is better debt out there.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, for sure.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so free money.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_01]: So one thing led to another, I was an COVID happen.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_01]: When people talk about, okay, like, let me just be clear, COVID totally stopped.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that should not happen.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but for me, I was lucky in a sense that, okay, during COVID, you know, I got to work from home, you know, as a take work or you get to work from home.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_01]: And I had a little bit time, you know, like, doing like early hours because I worked West Coast Hour before,
- 17:34[SPEAKER_01]: to really do a little bit of day trading, you know, like maybe the first two, three hours after the market stopped before I actually work my real job.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I got lucky.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_01]: I was able to buy at the lowest problem.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_01]: And it kind of bounced from there.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's what you're, I mean, like when everything was going crazy recently and going low, like our neighbors like this, I'm like, I'm not even looking, I'm literally doing the more money.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to give my people more money to go play in the other places that it's going to be good like obviously with to avoid these but like do you smart about it but like this is how people got rich in the depression you've got to buy when it's low and during those COVID times good for you you know what I have hearing from you have is like you're not afraid to do something that is a little scary and you're not waiting for someone to tell you it's okay like that's pretty bad ass.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_01]: I've not always been that way, Leslie, but thank you.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I mean, clearly going on or hearing that from you.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe it's the divorce that like made, made you that way.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_03]: You know what I mean?
- 18:37[SPEAKER_03]: Because I think sometimes we go through hard things.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_03]: We're like, wow, like you develop a skill set because you need to.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_03]: You know, so like, I think that's really cool.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think like the most important.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_01]: things actually two things that I was able to gain from the divorce.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_01]: Not just like the money part, it was that is great, right?
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like, we didn't have one thing written at her.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_01]: I was able to like, you know, make a lot more money from there.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, I got a promotion after, you know, when I disappeared.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, like I need to make more.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_03]: You know, the power of focus is when you're focusing on something like it actually happened because God was just like make sure that he all castrate everything for you also you're putting yourself out there and you and you said the right words focus I think a lot of people go I don't have this as opposed to where can I get this you know like you're like I need to make more money.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_03]: What's in front of me and so I think that that's a really important distinction because a lot of people like I have no money and they sit Overhaul and wallowing and I don't have any money.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_03]: I haven't and they're like look there are days for crying like you are going through divorce There's a few you should have a few fuck fucking crying days on the floor, but then you have to like
- 19:47[SPEAKER_03]: Get up and go, okay, what do I want?
- 19:49[SPEAKER_03]: What can I do with what I have?
- 19:51[SPEAKER_03]: And so I love you like, I'm gonna put in for a promotion.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_03]: Like you don't get a promotion if you're not ready for it.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_03]: Like no one's doing in corporate, as a woman?
- 19:58[SPEAKER_03]: No, you had to do that.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_03]: So like, I mean, I'm sure there's not all corporations do that, but like, let's be real.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_03]: Like a lot of them, you have to prove that you are more than qualified for that job.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_03]: So wait a go.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, thank you.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, to add on top of that, like, when you were talking about, if you don't ask, you don't receive, like, that's so true.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_01]: Because, like, I had a coworker.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_01]: I came to, and I asked, really, hey, I want to put you on a promotion list, you know, as an endorser for this quarter.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_01]: And she's like, oh, thank you.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: I really appreciate that.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, I, I'm, like, I think I thought it was due to, for a promotion, like, last year.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_01]: And like, well, have you ever asked for it?
- 20:38[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_01]: Like, if you never get it, you don't get it.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_03]: That is, you know, it's unfortunate, but like it's true, like a lot of people get places because they just asked, you know?
- 20:50[SPEAKER_03]: Like, there's even to some opportunities that I have had because I just asked.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_03]: Not because I was qualified.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I mean, I had to be qualified enough, but you know, like sometimes it's just like, you know, so, or who you, whom you ask, so I love that.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_03]: So, okay, to get a promotion, you play the stock market.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_03]: And then were you like were you always thinking about okay I can't wait like I want to retire from corporate early was that like the plan.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_03]: How did how did you go from like getting promotion working corporate and and day trading to go in okay I'm going to help people prepare their lives for a big change like a change outside their control because that's what lay off ready as it's like you're ready if changed outside of your control happens.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_01]: Right, yeah, honestly, and that's a great question.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_01]: And to be honest with you, like, I've always had in my mind that I want to retire early, because every time I was young, I always knew that like this is not it.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_01]: Like my life should not be in PowerPoint and, you know, be a corporate robot.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_01]: Even though like let me just tell you I know like some people talk about like burn out or you know like how do you've been treated that Levi that companies I feel very fortunate like my career so far in general that I have been treated very well for the most part and I'm really really really grateful for that But I think I've always like had that goal that I wanted to be able to retire like before 45 or like 50
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: you know, and really do my own thing with my life.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_01]: But let me just tell you, I never had that courage to.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_01]: So when you told me about like, hey, pop your bad ass, you know, thank you.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: I can confidently say that yesterday's past, say yes, I am that ass.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_01]: But like, maybe like two months ago, pop or maybe like whatever, you know, 40 years old pop will not beat beat beat that.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_03]: I think it takes time to realize, like somebody in one of our communities, just like mentioned, like,
- 22:43[SPEAKER_03]: something happened that four years ago, right?
- 22:45[SPEAKER_03]: And I was like, and it's so easy to go, oh my god, it's been four years, like, as a long time.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_03]: And it's only been four years.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I can't believe how like what you've done in such a short time.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_03]: So like, it's, of course, like, you recognizing your boldness and your bad assory, like, in the last couple of months versus three years, like, there's, I don't think that's even, you don't have to just, you connect, that's fine.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_03]: That's exactly when you found it.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_03]: You discovered it.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's
- 23:13[SPEAKER_03]: but also we have to look back and go, whoa, look what I did in such a short period of time.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_03]: You know, like a short period of time, like it's kind of a lot of growth.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_03]: So let's talk about playoff right a little bit, because I think a lot of people think it won't happen to them.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_03]: I was going to happen to that person, but I'm really great at my job or I'm, you know what I mean?
- 23:31[SPEAKER_03]: Like I'm really excellent at this, like
- 23:34[SPEAKER_03]: What are some things people need to be thinking about or just like we're viewing, you know, because it's going to take them a couple weeks that they should be looking into to make sure that they're really off ready like what are some signs or what are some actions.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so first, and thank you for asking Leslie.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: So Leia already is a free-dom based financial preparation.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not just like, oh, you know, like, hey, this is like your investment advisor telling you to like, okay, this is how you allocate your investment so on, right?
- 24:05[SPEAKER_01]: But this is more about like, how can you really decide a life that you really want to live in?
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: So to decide a life that give you the option for free-dom.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_01]: is you want to.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's not about like, hey, you know, tomorrow, oh, everybody goes and go into the office and like, hey, I want to quit my job because I'm really off-ready.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_01]: Some people, maybe you really love the job that you're doing, but, you know, like, what you touch on is with this economy is your job really safe, not really, with AI rising,
- 24:35[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that anybody's safe, right?
- 24:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like, for God's sake, people have been talking about what?
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: Like, by 2032, we may not even like have jobs the way that we see it.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, I think, and that's 232, that is a very short time away.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_03]: It is seven years.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I'm an optimistic person most of the time, and when I think about what AI is going to do, I think about like,
- 25:01[SPEAKER_03]: it's not going to be great for everybody.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be great for those who can use it.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's not going to be great for everybody.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_03]: So I do think that preparing ourselves to understand what is a life we want to live and I love that going through that so that no matter if you choose it or it chooses you, you can be, you can be, you know, you'll still cry, but you can have an
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think like you know, it's also beyond like the financial preparedness or the career preparedness, but like the emotional clarity and preparedness that comes with that right like basically it gives you an option to be able to walk away from
- 25:42[SPEAKER_01]: a situation or a job or even like people or like in my case like a marriage that no longer aligned with you with your goal in life.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: And so for me, I think they already, they are proving your life is about like, you know, being like strategically creating options for yourself so you'd never feel stuck.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like you don't wait for a security you created and you build the skills and the incomes before you need them.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_01]: And you also like, you know, help you stay
- 26:11[SPEAKER_01]: job security is an illusion, but the career resilience is real and that's what I think is still critical these days.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_03]: So many takeaways, but like we don't wait for security we create security like that that is key path that is like I think a lot of people have a fall security with their gigs, with their jobs you know and I think also you know the way the world works
- 26:38[SPEAKER_03]: It gives them that fall security like took my husband and I over two years to prove to the powers that be that we get a four to home because we don't work for anybody but ourselves.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_03]: Never mind that ourselves have made more money year after year, you know, like every tax season.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_03]: We can see that where our company is growing, they're like, oh, but you work for yourself.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_03]: No, that's not trustworthy.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I'm not going to fire me, you know.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_03]: It's so like, yeah, feels pretty secure if you ask me, but like, I think it's like creating that security and creating the things around your life.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_03]: You know, when we were talking about COVID, like, which was terrible.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, yes, yes, but let's talk about this.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_03]: The good thing is that came as a lot of people evaluated what they were doing and what they wanted and what they needed because they were laid off.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_03]: You know, they were forced to do it in a way, but like with what you're doing with people now is like actually helping them decide it had a times they have to leave right like they're not you're not necessarily encouraging to leave you're just helping them create the ability to have a decision.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I also think that when you lay off proof your life, it's not like not only it just give you options, but it actually gives you peace of mind as well.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: And I think like in this day and age, especially at our age now, it's the most important.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think like it's like way more important even beyond like money or success.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_03]: No, I agree.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_03]: Like, you know, they say like, we have sick.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_03]: There's six needs.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_03]: We all have universally.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_03]: So certainty.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_03]: is one of them.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_03]: And like we all crave it, right?
- 28:18[SPEAKER_03]: Like craving that certainty, like the job's going to be there, the mind is going to be there.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_03]: But we also crave uncertainty.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_03]: We want things to change, right?
- 28:25[SPEAKER_03]: But what you're talking about and what you've promoted yourself to doing, you retire from corporate to do this with people is like help them be able to make a decision
- 28:40[SPEAKER_01]: Right, yeah, and I think one important thing to Leslie that I feel like we have been right to is I don't think that we need that much in life in general, like in this capital is some society like do we need like you know 10 hand backs or I don't like what I do, but some people don't
- 29:00[SPEAKER_03]: But I do agree, like it is interesting, like I actually believe in a healthy capitalism, right?
- 29:10[SPEAKER_03]: Like I actually think like Netherlands is really great, like I want to live there.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_03]: They have a community-based capitalism, I'm in.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_03]: But I do think that you're right, that like there's a lot of lies at the more stuff we have, the more rich we are, when really like I'm looking at a very full closet.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_03]: and like when was the last time we opened this closet door?
- 29:29[SPEAKER_03]: Like when do we use these things?
- 29:31[SPEAKER_03]: And so I think that there is something about what you're saying is like we can lay off proof of our life by just a value.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_03]: And like are we living a life that we actually want?
- 29:41[SPEAKER_03]: We living one that we were lied to about.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_01]: right, exactly.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think like my point on that because I because people know I have a lot of handbags.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_01]: Trust me, me too.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like I used to work so close to fifth avenue.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_01]: So lean understand.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why I never had savings when I was younger.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway,
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, like basically, you don't need millions to retire early if you want to.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_01]: There are different types of retirement or like we call it like a fly right the farm movement.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_01]: Financial independence retire early movement.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_01]: So there are different types of fire that allows you to retire early.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_01]: Like some people, for example, can, you know, retire, we'd like a super type budget.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_01]: Some people retire with big budget for food.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_01]: So what that means they need to make more money and they need to invest more and they need longer time to invest right or some people They call it like a barista fire.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: So for barista fire is more on you You basically you retire, but you still like keep a part-time job that gives you benefit and you know, like do you know, yeah, yeah, that's like my dad because he can't sit still
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: I have to, I mean, whatever works for, you know, for him or like for each person is totally different.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, like I, before I retire, and I was in like now, I'm more like, you know, kind of, in a way, like, a theme might retire because obviously, I don't think that we can actually, like, sit still and just, okay, like,
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: today, I'm just going to go to the beach and do nothing.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_01]: Even though it's so cool, but you get bored.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, like you can live it so much less and you don't need millions of dollars to retire.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's what I have learned from that.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: And how I came to that realization, don't Leslie.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_01]: is because of the numbers.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_01]: So when you were talking about how can people prepare to lay off proof their lives, how can people prepare to, like, if they want option to retire, like, what's the first step to get there?
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: I would say, know your numbers.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_01]: So there are only three numbers that you need to know that and still important, like, one is unit worth as it's minus liability.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_01]: The second one, I call it a few funds.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: People have different definition of that.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_01]: But my FU fund is more like an emergency fund, you know, when you talk to experts, because sometimes people say, okay, like three to six months.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's enough these days with inflation, right?
- 32:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, six months.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_01]: So that's the money that you can kind of walk out from any situation if you want to, it's kind of like, okay, if you, I go, bye.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_01]: kind of situation.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_01]: And then the last one is the, what do we discuss on the file?
- 32:19[SPEAKER_01]: Like how much money you need to invest in in the market in order for you to like take a smaller amount on average.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's about 4% and you can take a safely from your investment so that you can live on and still have some money left to be addressed if that's that's working for you.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_03]: I, that's great.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_03]: I think that makes it so easy.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_03]: Because I think a lot of people think like,
- 32:43[SPEAKER_03]: Gotta think about my retirement, I gotta think about my life.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I got laid off, crap, and it's like, if you only have to focus on three numbers, it makes it really simple.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_03]: And I love this idea of like, barista fire.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_03]: These are fun, these are really great.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_03]: Have, who are you most excited to work with?
- 33:00[SPEAKER_03]: Like, who do you want to like, are you do, like, who is it that you're wanting to make sure that you help people like, lay off ready?
- 33:08[SPEAKER_01]: So I typically work with more like a high achiever people in copyright, but I think the most, I would say like, underster of market is women, right?
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: Like women, especially a little bit older, like 40 plus years old, that has been in corporate for a while.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_01]: And our,
- 33:27[SPEAKER_01]: more prone to be laid off.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think these are the demographic that I'm like so excited to work with because essentially that's kind of like me in a way, you know, I think when we pursue our like real true passion project or like I call like God's given purpose, you actually are serving the people that.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_01]: How do I say that?
- 33:51[SPEAKER_03]: Like, you're younger, so, you know, totally, everyone who listens to this podcast, but it wasn't me.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe there are different ages of the my younger version of, but yes, we are all with, we're the best, we are the best able to serve the people who want one's were.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_03]: So I love this.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_03]: Have this as so exciting.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to take a brief break.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_03]: Find out how people can find you, follow you and work with you.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, so you can find me on Tik Tok at Moments of Reset M-O-M-E-N-T-S of Reset or at layoffready.com.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_03]: Layoffready.com.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_03]: I can't believe that wasn't a good for you.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_03]: That was waiting for you.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_03]: Moments of Reset and layoffready.com.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_03]: All right, Pav.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_03]: What bold, executable, intrinsic, or targeted steps?
- 34:34[SPEAKER_03]: Do you have for us to take away from this episode?
- 34:37[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_01]: So, both of us have to be loud, but it has to be true.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: The life that you want is not built at once.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_01]: So, it's built in the micro moment of honesty to yourself.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_01]: So, until one day, the outside world catches up.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, you just be too, too, you see it.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_01]: And people will see it too.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I, that is so beautiful.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_03]: That is actually so true.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_03]: Those micro moments of you, you know, honest.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_03]: I love that.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_03]: I love that so much.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_03]: This is so fun because it's not like I don't always have people who've been listening to show for a long time, who've been slowly being until they see it on.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_03]: the shop like it's just not something that happens very often and so it's just so cool to hear the full circle and for everyone to hear the full circle of you going through the life that you went through doing the hard thing you know and now you've got something that can help other people do it too I mean like that's just beautiful.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and thank you so much Leslie for I think like the work that you have done actually has not just only helped me but I'm sure like it has helped thousands if not millions of people you are having got work so I think like I wish that that would be more of you so thank you so much for all you've done.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_01]: have.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_03]: I can't hear that in the last thing of my day today and I've never seen that.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_03]: I'm taking with me on a vacation.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_03]: I'm so, so grateful.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_03]: You know, if we all give ourselves a credit that we would give other people, right?
- 36:14[SPEAKER_03]: We would realize that like, we actually do in great jobs.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_03]: And it's just hard.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_03]: It's just hard because you don't see all the effort team that's happening.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_03]: You don't see all the people who's lives.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_03]: But even you have, saying thank you.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_03]: And also,
- 36:28[SPEAKER_03]: you're going to give so many people permission on this show, you know, whether or not they call you to be left ready, but maybe they actually just go, oh wait, I can actually just felt that papers and take one day or oh, I actually need to sit down and think about like, what do I want?
- 36:44[SPEAKER_03]: What does wealth mean to me?
- 36:45[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I think that it's just so cool and you just given some great things.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_03]: So now you're on your way to impact more and more people and the world's me better place
- 36:56[SPEAKER_03]: You know, people listen to podcasts.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_03]: You guys are amazing people, cheerleading people all the time.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_03]: And I say this to the people I coach.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_03]: You are the only person who can do what you do the way that you do it.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_03]: You are it.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_03]: And so don't be quiet.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_03]: Don't be soft.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_03]: Don't hide your magic because there's people who are literally waiting for you.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_03]: You know, you're the only one.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_03]: So,
- 37:15[SPEAKER_03]: have.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you for stepping out and creating Lyoff ready.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_03]: I'm super excited for what you're doing and for the people who are going to experience it.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_03]: And everyone share this with a friend who needs to hear it.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_03]: Someone who needs to hear a journey that someone's been on.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_03]: Someone who needs to hear that there is ways to prepare themselves.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_03]: So no matter what happens, they're ready for it.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_03]: And, but they even they can be like a barista fire.
