Let's do this. [heavy metal music] Get on your bikes and ride!
• 0:12
[heavy metal music] Hey, everybody. Hi. We're making the radio today. Beep, beep. Yeah, I know.
• 0:28
I'm playing with the- This is the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast show number 303, I think it is. 303, yeah. It's, yeah. It's not, it's not even a good motor size. No, it's like a, it's like a, uh,
• 0:44
web address error message. Oh, it could be. Like a 404, but a 303. Right. Ah, there we go. Something like that. I know you've been researching that for weeks and weeks on end.
• 0:54
[laughs] It was minutes today [laughs] where I noticed it- What are they gonna do, 302... and I'm like, I'm like, "303, what is it gonna be?" 30- 304. No, when we get to 318, eh. 351, we're looking pretty good.
• 1:04
You know, we're looking at a good, good motor. I wanna get to 311. Yeah. [singing] Never was the color of her energy. All righty. Hey, everybody. [laughs] It's, uh, it's another week. Don't get ahead of yourself...
• 1:12
it's another, it's another show here at, uh, Full Spectrum Cycling. Right off the bat, right off the bat on the top of the list- [imitates clicking] Tony had to t- Tony's not even here.
• 1:23
T- see, that's not Tony, 'cause Tony's not here. That's JK over there. But the first thing, right here. Right here. Yeah, right off- Sven. Uh, I'll be Sven this week again.
• 1:33
Uh, right off the bat, Michael's never volunteered. [laughs] I assume he means the River West 24. That would be correct. Is, is he saying you haven't volunteered for anything in your entire life? Oh, that is so wrong.
• 1:44
Wrong, man. Wrong, wrong. Wrong, bro. Bro, bro, get your facts straight, bro. Yeah, man. Qualify it by putting, "At the River West 24," bro. Well, n- hey, and to be a fair, to be fair- To be fair...
• 1:58
little things, little things along the way. It's a community thing, so I help out in the community as the night is progressing and regressing and whatever. Gotta- I just don't need to celebrate it sometimes- Right...
• 2:11
you know? And da, da, da, and jump in line and get, go... You get to stand in a different line. We, uh, we got a little... Well, I, anyway, at least, we talked about it.
• 2:20
I got a little text, I think Tony did, too, from, uh, Shannon Chapas [clicks tongue] down there in, uh, uh, wherever he's at south of us, uh, about wanting to come up and do the River West 24 thing. Yeah.
• 2:32
And I think that's a- Right up- I think that's a great thing, and I think it's a great thing that Tony's not doing a team this year, 'cause then that means I don't necessarily have to do a team either.
• 2:41
It also means I can just hang out. Right. I, I, so I- I'm tempted, I'm tempted, and not, uh... I don't know. Well, we've got this t- I'm just so... That is part of my volunteer shift. Yeah.
• 2:51
I mean, you, yeah, that's, is to be the guy waiting with my lottery tickets. That's, and, and- That's, that's media. That's, uh, that's personality right there. And it's just da, dun, da, dun, da, da.
• 3:03
I mean, it's not like there wouldn't be other people doing this, but I know- [laughs]... they want it to be shrinking and what have you. Yes, as we talked about last week. Right.
• 3:12
So, but all the same, uh, ooh, it's also, you know, it's, it's part of the heart of- The throbbing heart of the River West 24... of the registration day. Oh, true. And yeah, I mean, okay.
• 3:28
So- You know Jeremy wants to do a stand-up, uh, as long as possible. [laughs] Why that guy wasn't a comedian, I'll never know.
• 3:35
[laughs] Uh, so I don't know, did we talk about this last week, Kevin Spacey's moping about our neighborhood? He was in- Yeah...
• 3:41
he was actually directly in our neighborhood, like a block away, doing a, some kind of chase scene. We're in sort of an industrial- Right, right...
• 3:48
old school, very, very old Milwaukee industrial area, and they were blocking streets off, and the- It didn't work that well when I was walking fast over here...
• 3:56
well, and the guy on Nash Street, right, like a half a block down, I'm like... He's, like, frantically waving, and I'm, like, pointing to where I'm going. I'm like- Mm-hmm. He's like... And then I roll my window down.
• 4:06
I'm like, "Dude, 3720, I'm going right there." "Oh, okay, man. Yeah, that's cool." Mm, mm-hmm. [laughs] But, uh, the other thing about Mr. Spacey is he's now three blocks from my house.
• 4:17
They're doing this in an old factory that's near my house. But to be- The old mister...
• 4:24
bringing this all the way around to cycling again, and not doing a team for the 24, is I have this kind of plan to do some sort of documentary business. I did, I did one last year kind of on my own,
• 4:37
and I'm trying to get some shooters to come and, and shoot some footage and stuff. And I don't know if I can count on the, the people [laughs] that are in the pocket already.
• 4:46
[laughs] Some of these people are, uh, they're good, but they're also flighty as fuck. Oh, yes.
• 4:52
I would like to do something, so we'll see if we can make that work, and being on a team would make that absolutely not possible. Sure. Sure, sure, sure.
• 5:00
I mean- I think, I think we can get into Sundance if we do it right. Oh. First of all, you should see the size of the movie lights that are at- What is that, Park City, Utah?
• 5:09
Uh, Sundance is in Idaho somewhere- Oh, I believed it was something else... I believe the town is called. Say it with me. Sundance. Su- Sundance. Oh, yeah.
• 5:16
Is that- [laughs] Is, is that like Casey when he's like, he's like, "The Walker's Point [laughs] Music Hall, isn't that in, like, Cudahy or something?" [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, yeah, no. No. Uh, Walker's Point.
• 5:27
So if I could, if I could, like, get some of these, these big-ass movie lights that they're right in the parking lot of, right by my house, and somehow spirit them away to, uh- Right...
• 5:39
light up our scenes outside of checkpoints- Oh... because these are like, these are like, s- they're suns. They're, like, this big. Uh-huh, uh-huh. And there's a... And it's like, yes, it's daylight out.
• 5:49
Oh, no, it's midnight? Yeah, it's daylight outside. Shit. [laughs] Amazing. So yeah. Yeah, cool stuff. Um, whatever you think of Mr.
• 5:57
Spacey and his previous problems, I think he's one of the [laughs] greatest actors ever. I just enjoy- Yeah, as I was-... so much of his- As, his catalog of work, yes. I mean- We will...
• 6:06
his current and- It stands on its own... recent, recent past. Yeah. Uh- Notwithstanding his bug- Right... fuckery or whatever the fuck we're listening to. Exactly. As I was spouting about- [laughs]...
• 6:16
like the old, the Nugent, the Ted Nugent. Right, right. You know, it's like, eh- Yep... man, but then Strangelove comes on and- Yeah... and, you know, you're in there. You got it. But...
• 6:26
Uh, as usual- Moving right along... moving right along, as usual, the United Performing Arts Fund's Ride for the Arts, June 1st, is going over the Hoan Bridge once again. I still haven't gone. I still haven't done that.
• 6:37
Yeah. Or, or even, like just- Like-... hijacked the ride and just- No... gone on there. You know why? I mean, people will. It's a big fucking hill. I'm not going up that thing. [laughs] Well, yeah.
• 6:45
It's the largest hill in Milwaukee. Yeah, but it's like- It's like, I don't know... well, and it's a big ride with a lot of people- Yeah... that don't ride a lot. Right. And that means- It's like 30-...
• 6:55
left, right- Well, it-... left, right, stop in the middle of nowhere... it has been- I mean, p-... 30,000 people in the past. Yeah. Just like, "Oh, wait, no, I'm not with my, you know, my group." Stop.
• 7:06
And put- In, in the middle of the road... put a foot down. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, with other people trying to get around you. Yeah, I feel you.
• 7:11
I, I- I mean, you know, when you were- I will not suffer that- When Bob Uecker-... tomfoolery... was like the, the- As ever... one of the faces of it for Miller Lite, he...
• 7:18
I'm sure he rode at the front of it until he got- [laughs]... taken out of the way and- Oh, Al? No, no, no. Or, no, no, uh- Uek, Uecker. Yeah, yeah. Okay. Yeah, 'cause he was a Miller Lite guy. Uh, yeah.
• 7:30
I was thinking Al's Run. I get... I'm conflating a lot of things at the same time. I'm still unwinding from work, sorry. What's this- Sorry... fucking Malort sucks stuff? I threw that in there. What the hell?
• 7:40
They're mints, candies. Oh, that's, that... Oh, literally. Yeah. Now I get it. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I don't know. They're, little candies that taste- First of all, I- They're little candies that taste like Malort...
• 7:50
I'm not sure that's a good thing. Well, if you think about Malort, it tastes like some sort of logi- lozenge that you probably don't wanna taste. It does, it does last for a good five minutes anyway, though, so- Yeah...
• 8:00
probably the same thing as- It's like a digestive. I am a Malort- I think... fan. I don't- I, I'm not, I'm not- I'm not, not a Malort fan... I'm not not one. Right. Um- I like, I, I like ordering it to get people's
• 8:14
atten- like, reactions to it. Right on... at times. It's just like, "No, I'm not, I'm not feeling like a shot of whiskey, vodka, tequila, something like that." It's like, "No, I'll take some of the weird- Yeah...
• 8:26
sock water." [laughs] Or... Especially when Pete over at Quarters says, you know, "First shot's always free." You're like, "All right, man, I can do that." Nice.
• 8:36
Uh, final Milwaukee thing of the day, unless we swing back around to this thing at some point, is, uh, we've been talking about the old SS Minnow down on the lakefront- Mm... for six months now, and there was...
• 8:46
It was supposed to be gone, but the salvage pontoon boat that was- Broke... helping broke. [laughs] And now there's two boats stuck there. Now it's stuck there, too.
• 8:55
[laughs] I, I think that boat came from some alternate dimension or something. Ah. It, it- It did, yeah.
• 9:00
I've been watching my Ancient Aliens, and there are echo locations throughout, and yes, yes, that's why there are shipwrecks and all along the coastline- Yep... of- This is, this is-... of Lake Michigan...
• 9:09
this is a comedy of errors and, and- [clears throat]... and no, uh, public official or public entity, sheriff's department, mayor's office, Coast Guard, anybody is taking any responsibility for it.
• 9:21
It's like, "Well, it's not really in the city of Milwaukee. The sheriff is supposed to take care of the lakefront." Well, Mayor Chevy did have a photo op there, and- Yeah, well, he- And-...
• 9:30
said it, he should have done it more like when it was actually floating away and done. Yeah. Now he looks like, "Well, I didn't really get much done with my photo op, did I?" Well, uh, well, no, it works out.
• 9:40
[laughs] Chevy. I like... Our, our mayor is Cavalier Johnson, so. He's, he's very cavalier about his job, apparently. Yeah. But it's Chevy Cavalier. Come on. It all makes sense. All right. Uh, I don't know.
• 9:55
I think I'm gonna go start at the bottom first, just because this is semi-ridiculous on the surface, but kinda sorta makes sense once you unpack it.
• 10:06
Giant, the giant company that makes the bikes with the namesake name on them- Mm...
• 10:11
now makes a 5 1/2 pound carbon fiber pushbike for y- very small children, like two, three, four years old, before they can actually pedal. 5 1/2 pounds. Like a Strider or- Yeah, like a Strider kind of an idea.
• 10:26
And I'm like, "You gotta be fucking shitting me, man. Your... That, that's just... That's like a cash grab. They're just doing it for people, and it's gonna cost 2,000 bucks for a stupid pushbike."
• 10:36
And then I kind of- Someone stole my pushbike. I want it back. So- That's an Evil and the Sniffers tune.
• 10:41
[laughs] And then I read into it a little bit more, and they're doing some advanced carbon fiber recycling manufacturing, and right now the technology that they're working with, they don't actually trust for a full-sized, you know, 250-pound human bike.
• 10:58
[laughs] So they're gonna test it on small kids and see- Mm... if they can make it- Mm... last through that. [laughs] Y- yeah. Okay. No. [laughs] Well, that's how I'm reading it. I, yeah.
• 11:08
As, as you were saying it, I mean, it- Well, I'm, I'm- I'm following the logic- I'm probably-... trail... paste, painting a picture of it that's like, "What?"
• 11:16
It's like, "No, that's not how we were suppo- No, that's not how it was supposed to be received." Well, that's how it did get received, man. Oh. Hey, guess what today... Oh, no, it's April 29th. Never mind.
• 11:27
[sighs] April, August, they both start with A's. Oh. My, my dad's birthday would've been August 29th. But I just saw 29, I'm like, "Oh, damn." Oh. Sorry, Dad. Been gone for a while. Don't worry about it.
• 11:38
[laughs] Uh, I spent an hour today, and it was not an unentertaining hour, while I was working on the Confuser, watching, uh, our good buddy Mark Peterson. He did a,
• 11:50
I guess I'd call it a seminar or a Q&A about his bike stuff and his journey from BMX when he was eight years old to, you know, working on bikes now and stuff.
• 12:01
Out there in Ogden, Utah- And by cracky, that guy's pretty good speaker. He's a pretty good guy. Yeah. You should watch that thing. I'm gonna have a link in the show notes for that. Well done.
• 12:10
It's part of his, uh, neighborhood bike shop series. Yeah, I saw a post about- I'd give it a look. I mean, put it in- I, I saw the post that he had a- Right... about it. Yeah.
• 12:20
I just didn't hit the button I, you know, I mean, you could- I'll get there. That's fine. Yeah.
• 12:25
It's not quite like, you know, something you gotta pay rapt attention to, but it's, there's a, there's a bunch of good stuff in there and many anecdotes that are... Hey, let's, let's... Wait, what, what are you doing?
• 12:35
Do you what, what? Do what? Hey, let's, let's use- Being real quiet... let's use this thing, though. So check out Mark Peterson's thing, but let's use this thing. So here's a cool thing. Like, we're at the top...
• 12:45
Oh, wait. We're riding and we're coming along. [bell ringing] We're just, we're, we're on the trail and we're, you know, we're kinda warning you ahead of time. This is on our handlebar. Oh, buck like a bronco. Yeah.
• 12:56
We're just going over the whoops and stuff, and this is big air. And then you land, [bell ringing] and it's still doing it.
• 13:02
And then you get, and then you're like, you'd get around a bunch of people and you don't wanna hear it, you just flip this little widget over here. Magnetically, no more ringing. I think that's unbelievably clever.
• 13:14
I don't know why somebody... This is from our friends at PDW, by the way. They sent this to us to do a little testy thing. I just tested it. It works fine. It's called the Heads Up Trail Bell, PDW, Portland Design Works.
• 13:27
Timbre de Sendero. Hmm? I don't know what, uh, Sonnet de Velo is, but they're all- Oh, Sonnet de Velo. There's a bunch of- A bell of the bike. Yeah, and then Timbre de Sendero.
• 13:41
There's a bunch of foreign words on this thing, I think. [bell ringing] And also, uh, so Eric, the guy that started PDW back in aught eight or, no, it was, it was in the '90s, I think, maybe '98 or something.
• 13:54
It's been a while. A very, very forthcoming guy with what all the bullshittery, shall I say, of tariffs has g- Yeah... may mean for PDW and their ilk. Now, a lot of stuff that PDW does is in Taiwan and Japan.
• 14:09
Not so much, this is, this is Taiwan, not so much in China, but there's a lot of companies similar that have product that's just sitting over there, and they're not gonna bring it here. It's just staying there.
• 14:24
So if you wanted something and you were expecting it to get here, that's not happening until things change.
• 14:30
So they just sent a, a, a note out today that they're gonna be selectively raising prices because you can't eat 40%. 185%? Nutty. I don't know. But, uh, yeah, so yeah, check out PDW. They do a lot of smart stuff. Yeah.
• 14:48
Here's another, here's another one. I thought this one was kinda interesting. It just looks like a typical, you know, stem-mounted- Koozie...
• 14:56
bottle bag koozie kinda deal, but it has this little trickery on the bottom here which can make it bigger or smaller, and then you have your cinch straps. So if you got your big bottle, it's down here.
• 15:08
If it's a small bottle, it's up there, and then you can cinch that. Oh. So it's a multi-bottle size thing. I think they just like smart, thinky people. Ah.
• 15:17
And, and that's made out of, like, recycled X-Pacs, so it's, it's, uh, as environmentally friendly as, as, as plastic stuff gets, I assume. But there you go, PDW. Check 'em out. They're at ridepdw.com.
• 15:33
Yes, and here's a big one. Oh, [bell ringing] there you go. Oh, sh- shit, I'm not even done with this one yet. That's all right.
• 15:39
I was I'll put this in here, in the, uh, this is from our friends over there in, in Frankville, Iowa, who were selling this stuff for, uh, to keep the lights on, literally, the, the lights and the power.
• 15:51
They needed some money to make some improvements, so they sold Keep Frankville Wet and Lit koozies and T-shirts. If you're... If you want one, let me know.
• 16:01
I'll see if we can hook you up with our, uh, good friend Mike McAbee, and he'll probably be able to lay one on you or charge you a exorbitant rate so they can keep- [laughs]...
• 16:10
drinking water and seeing stuff with their light bulbs. Right. Uh, so today's, uh, what do you call it? Top of the Hill business. Top of the Hill beer, le show beer.
• 16:21
This is a- Pseudo Sue from- Well, this is a good, uh, this is a... I'm gonna put this here as a, as a dessert beer later. [laughs] This is a good, uh, reminder of last week when we did our WMSC
• 16:33
guitar smasher trip down to, is it called Huay or Hoo or? Huay. Huay. Uh, they had Pseudo Sue on tap. Yeah. Mm. And thanks to the generous ticket giving of certain people, we had more than enough of them. [laughs] Right.
• 16:48
Right, right, right. Um, and also a very fantastic, uh, kind of, I c- it's fusion. Huh? Yeah. Yeah. Very, uh- To, to me it's lean-... Vie- Vietnamese... it's leaning towards Chinese a little bit maybe. Sure.
• 16:59
They have some- Good food, though... they have some in there just to keep people on the menu, like, "What the hell am I," you know, kind of thing.
• 17:06
Yeah, I t- I tend to go towards, "Yeah, I need some pot stickers, I need this and that," just something easy. But, uh, your Pseudo Sue is from your Decorah, Iowa, at your Taplin Goliath Brewery.
• 17:16
And, uh, I sure the sh- I sure do like Pseudo Sue. And I do believe, uh, Russ from Fel- Falcon Bowl was intrigued by the fact of trying to get that on tap, 'cause he did have- Yeah, it was on tap there, not in cans...
• 17:32
he, he did have, uh, at least one. Right on. And, and he was like, "Ooh, this is good. I'm gonna look into that," so. I, I, I applaud his effort at looking into it. It's, it would be nice. I hope for the best.
• 17:43
I hope for... I l- love Russ on that thing. He had a great jukebox in that bar [laughs] but it was only for, like, six months. All right. Well-curated and err- I'm s- Son of a gun...
• 17:54
I'm sure we'll have more of this in the upcoming weeks, but I can't not talk about this stuff. Uh, Revel Bikes, three days after Sea Otter, which is n- now the biggest... show in the world for, well, maybe not.
• 18:08
Eurobike might be bigger, and Taiwan. Whatever, it's the biggest one in the United States where the whole bike industry gets together and, and commiserates and talks about the new stuff they got.
• 18:16
And three days after they introduced a bunch of bikes and spent a bunch of time there, shut down. [scoffs] They have a, they have a cash flow issue and a debt due, and they can't continue.
• 18:27
I don't know if somebody will buy it or assume their debt, or assume that getting into the bike business right now is the stupidest thing you could possibly do.
• 18:35
But, uh, it was an interesting company, and I'm not saying it's gone 100%, but the guy that started it is Adam Miller, who started Borealis way back in the day. Okay. He, when he was, like, 21 or 2. He was very young.
• 18:52
He started out, and then Steve, and then, then he got out of there and he started Y Cycles, which was a titanium builder of fat bikes and such. And then Revel, and then Revel sucked up Y and it was all Revel then.
• 19:08
And then he left last year, and then now somebody's holding the bag and, uh, they dropped it, I guess.
• 19:15
But, uh, he admitted full-hearted, wholeheartedly, full-heartedly, that he's more of a creator, which is, he's built a bunch of good stuff, than an actual operator. He doesn't, you know, that's for somebody else to do.
• 19:28
That's why he handed the company off. I'm an idea man, Chuck. Yeah, I'm an idea guy. I'm an idea man. That's exactly- That's what I'm saying. Yeah. Exactly right. Microwave pockets.
• 19:35
You can keep your hands warm and cook a potato. I like this idea. [laughs] Night shift. [laughs] Michael Keaton. Yeah. [laughs] So.
• 19:42
[laughs] Ah, dude, I kinda, I kinda throw myself in the same, but not anywhere near as successful, uh, bucket as... I got a bunch of ideas. I got great ideas. [laughs] I got a bu- I like, I'm an 85% guy.
• 19:56
I get, I, like, "Oh yeah, I could see it would totally work. We'll just see that... Oh, no, wait, there's something else I wanna do over there." Shi- [laughs] Shiny, shiny object guy.
• 20:05
That said, you know- Shiny blue car We, we are [laughs]... that's a squirrel. We are getting- Whoo... we are getting ever closer here to podcast- Don't say the word, don't say the word squirrel. No. No.
• 20:15
We're getting ever closer at the podcast studio, actually, having this be available for people to use. I just kinda don't know if... I don't want people in here.
• 20:22
I w- I don't mind 'em out there on the other side of the wall. I want 'em in my room. This is my room. Yeah. Out of my room. Yeah, there's a fireplace- Right?... if you look back over there.
• 20:31
Yeah, it's, well, it, it's gonna be s- wicked nice next week, like s- in the 70s, I'll- And an Antarctica sca- uh, scape or something. Oh, yeah. That's pretty sweet. Yeah. Snowscape. Snowscape. There we go. On the telly.
• 20:45
Yeah. Actually, that, I might have to replace that telly with the telly in the other room 'cause that telly's got a screen that doesn't reflect, which might be better for what we need. Hmm.
• 20:53
Oh, I know we've talked about this in the past, RAGBRAI, the- RAGBRAI... the big old, the big old bike ride across Iowa. They have these theme days things.
• 21:04
Not su- Oh, I- I'm not sure I'm, I'm- I didn't see this earlier, but I saw this... I, well, I mean, I get theme days. That's a great idea. Like, Naked Beer Slide was one of 'em that we used to do when we did RAGBRAI.
• 21:15
It was also DragBRAI, where we had a, a flatbed that we did a drag show on and did judging and stuff. Those are fun themes.
• 21:23
These are like, uh, Tire Dip and Mile of Silence, uh, "We ride in silence to remember those we've lost." Okay, I could see, you know. Thin Line Appreciation Day. That sounds a lot like it's kind of a
• 21:36
police, military, blah, blah, blah thing. Public s- yeah. Yeah. Vintage RAGBRAI jersey day. Okay, aren't you gonna wear it anyway? I guess you just wear it on that day. Do you ride for a purpose?
• 21:48
Let anyone know what your purpose is and ride for that. My purpose is to get to the beer at the end of today. That's a good purpose right there. [laughs] Uh, college jersey day. Just, you know, tech- [laughs]
• 22:02
State jersey day. [sighs] These are just- Man... I don't know who came up with these. And then the Tire Dip at the last day in the Mississippi, and the 52 RAGBRAI jersey day. Okay, here's the deal.
• 22:14
If you're gonna have themes, those are dumb. I'm sorry. I wouldn't do a one of those. You know? I mean, let people make their own costumes. Maybe make a theme like it's f- it's goat day.
• 22:28
Everybody, you know, dress like a goat or something. I don't, just... I feel like somebody missed the mark on this, and, and, and, and heads must roll because these are lame. [laughs] They're...
• 22:41
So you go through day one through six, and they're trying to, to whore out the, the 52 jerseys, I suppose, to sell 'em and make some cash. That kinda seems like what I'm thinking. [laughs] I do have to...
• 22:54
I did run across, uh, I believe it is early June, I saw notice of the, um, naked bike ride. In Milwaukee? World. It, but- But I, but, like- Oh, does that happen here on that day?
• 23:13
I know they- Yeah... I, I've been, I've almost been blinded by it a few times. Um- It just came up... I cannot imagine me doing that, just being- No, you need something between saddle and- Yeah... bits...
• 23:28
except- And yeah, bits... bits of saggy skin from the bum. It just... Yeah. [laughs] It needs something in between there. Geez. Yeah, man. Uh, here's something I should probably... Oh, the PDW stickers are cool.
• 23:42
You can have one of those. Those are sweet. I think they got, like, uh, Mickey Mouses on 'em. Uh, we still have s- these sticker packs. See that right there? If you sign up for the newsletter on thefatbike.com,
• 23:54
we'll do a drawing, a final drawing now, for sticker packs to send to you. These are, some of these, like this, uh, gnome fink, I don't know if it's in every one. Oh, damn it, I said the word. But anyway- [laughs]...
• 24:06
um, there's stuff from w- the very early days of thefatbike.com and, uh, yeah We're, we're cranking along on that sucker again. Can't find it. Can't fight it Can't find it. Can't fight it.
• 24:21
[laughs] It, well, it's sometime in June. It's sometime in June, and it starts at 4:00, and they didn't really give a meetup place either to join or to avoid, one or the other kind of thing.
• 24:34
Oh, I forgot there's- Either participate or flee. Flee, flee, flee as far as you can- Yeah, possibly... one or the other. It's like a, yeah, it's like me being a floor captain, uh, for a tornado drill.
• 24:45
And it's like, "Here, the tornado drill will be at 1:00 PM on this day, so either play nice and do what I... You know, just go outside and, or go in, in the hallway, or just don't be, or just don't be around."
• 24:58
Don't be around. It's a lot easier that way. Right on. Uh, I forgot there's another whole page of this stuff. Uh, bad news mostly. [laughs] I d- well, this, the sticker thing was at the bottom. It's not bad. Well, it is.
• 25:11
O- O- Ove-, Oveja Negra who makes some really sweet b- bags, you know, frame bags and other- Bag... bags. Um, uh, they're laying people off. They're laying off workers.
• 25:20
They don't have, they don't have room to lay off workers out where they are in Colorado there. They're a small town in Colorado, I believe.
• 25:27
Um, and also Specialized and Trek, they wanna get in on the game too, so they're raising prices May 1st. [groans] I think they're doing it a little differently.
• 25:38
I mean, so, so- Well, probably smaller incrementally- Maybe... ish, rash- Well, so they're-... da, da, da, because- They're- Come on, they- All right.
• 25:47
So they're in slightly different boats, I think, because Specialized is owned a bunch by the manufacturer that makes all their frames. Mm-hmm. And all they do is sell Specialized-branded products mo- for the most part.
• 26:02
Trek, on the other hand, also sells SRAM. They also sell Shimano and a bunch of other stuff because they wanted to monopolize their dealers, and not just by the bicycle, but also all of the- Componentry...
• 26:14
all the componentry and other stuff and, and lock into- Yeah, Bontrager is part of Spec- Yeah, Bontrager and Fisher and all the other things they bought up back in the day. Yeah.
• 26:23
But even, even off-brands, not off-brand, either other major brand stuff that they don't have anything to do with the making of, they still warehouse and sell, and I think they're gonna be in a bigger pile of shit than, than Specialized is, so
• 26:38
we'll see what happens. [laughs] This is, uh, crazy. We'll see what happens. Well, I'll tell you what. We'll see what happens. Let me- Let's go everybody. Let me l- I hate that fucking phrase. We'll see what happens.
• 26:46
Uh, I'm just saying. Let me, let me, let me tell you what. How about that one? Let me tell you what. Well- Uh, by-... buy American. [groans] By, no, by next, well, by next- Well, yeah, but no...
• 26:55
this could all change by next week. We have no idea. This could very well change. Yeah, we'll see what happens. Yeah, we have to see what happens. Yeah, we have to. We'll wait and see what happens.
• 27:03
[laughs] I have no idea. [laughs] All right. It's just- So speaking of buy American- [groans] It's like a- Speaking of buy American-... drill in my freaking brain. All right. Geez. Sorry. Okay.
• 27:13
Well, you hit a button, man. May- maybe you should volunteer sometime. Hey, all right. [laughs] That's it. Gloves are off. [laughs] No.
• 27:19
[laughs] Uh, I, I will say this, that in this time of big fuckery, supporting your local bike shop is probably as important, if not- Yes... more important now than it was during the pandemic.
• 27:30
Uh, I, I've got a, I've got a thing in the can, I gotta put it on the YouTube, but I'm talking about on this Head Talky thing where I d- uh, talk about our bike shop and the trials and tribulations of the pandemic and what happened and, and why we're the bike store on the second floor.
• 27:45
Uh, there, uh, this is, I think, it's, it has the potential to be worse. Yeah. And- Totally... the uncertainty that you felt back then as- Screaming...
• 27:56
as a human being is, is now being v- visited upon actual companies, I think, you know? It's like- Yeah... mm. Well, I don't know. On that cheery ass note. [laughs] On that cheery ass note. [laughs] Uh, uh, yeah.
• 28:11
I guess, like, we kinda, did we exhaust? I think we exhausted the list. Not quite, we didn't. We did Bold, Revel, RAGBRAI. Oh- [censored] to do...
• 28:18
oh, here's something that I, I, h- I'll leave you with this, 'cause this is cool. All right.
• 28:21
Uh, we had seen a while back, Mark Peterson, we talked about earlier, has an AMP B3, which is an old school, one of the first suspension bikes, and it was a very unique design.
• 28:35
Uh, your, your friendly, uh, bike snob, New York bike snob, Bike Snob NYC- [laughs]... has a very pristinely one that he was riding around out in the trails there in New York.
• 28:46
So I just thought it was kinda weird that Mark brought up the B3, and now the snobby bike guy is bringing it up, but- Dave Hill? No. I mean, just Bike Snob NYC. Oh, oh. He's, he, he's been around for a long time.
• 28:58
He actually makes money at that. It's kinda weird in the bike business, but [sighs] yeah. Well, there you have it, folks. Uh, thank you for listening to another show 303- Rollicking... podcast thingy-ma-jigger.
• 29:11
And, uh, I will, we'll be back here next week for 304. 304. [rock music] Bold.
