- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13Yeah, that's right. It's me.
- 0:15You've tapped on play, and here I am.
- 0:18And you and I are going to do what we do each day, read
- 0:21another chapter of God's Word. And as we continue reading
- 0:25through this fascinating book called the Acts of the Apostles,
- 0:31we hear story after story of Paul preaching the good news.
- 0:35And we'll hear other names like Barnabas and Silas who accompany
- 0:38Paul. And so we feel like, ah, there's
- 0:41lots going on and there are a few people as key leaders in
- 0:43this church. But do not be deceived.
- 0:46No, this is just one strand of this incredible growth that was
- 0:50happening in so many directions in so many different places.
- 0:53And today we get kind of a brief taste as toward the end of this
- 0:57chapter, we hear about this new preacher by the name of Apollos.
- 1:01And this just shows that there are all sorts of people that the
- 1:04Holy Spirit has moved in and they have been convicted that
- 1:08Jesus is indeed Lord, and they have begun preaching.
- 1:12And so God's church is just, you know, how you watch some of
- 1:16those movies where there's a pandemic or an alien invasion
- 1:19and you see the map where the red circles get bigger and
- 1:21bigger, and they say, general, in four days we will have lost
- 1:25Europe. Well, maybe not at that pace of
- 1:28accelerated spread, but this is the way the gospel was spreading
- 1:32far beyond just this one linear thread that we're following in
- 1:35the book of Acts. God's church was growing in all
- 1:38directions. And today we get a bit of a
- 1:40taste of that. Oh, wonderful stuff.
- 1:44This message certainly is life changing and it was changing
- 1:48lives and growing dramatically. So let's continue the story as
- 1:51we read together. Acts chapter 18.
- 2:03Then Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.
- 2:07There he became acquainted with the Jew named Aquila, born in
- 2:11Pontus, who had recently arrived from Italy with his wife
- 2:14Priscilla. They had left Italy when
- 2:17Claudius Caesar deported all Jews from Rome.
- 2:20Paul lived and worked with them, for they were tent makers just
- 2:24as he was. Each Sabbath found Paul at the
- 2:27synagogue trying to convince the Jews and Greeks alike.
- 2:31And after Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul spent
- 2:35all his time preaching the word. He testified to the Jews that
- 2:39Jesus was the Messiah, but when they opposed and insulted him,
- 2:44Paul shook the dust from his clothes and said, Your blood is
- 2:48upon your own heads. I am innocent.
- 2:52From now on I will go preach to the Gentiles.
- 2:56Then he left and went to the home of Titus Justice, a Gentile
- 3:01who worshipped God and lived next door to the synagogue.
- 3:04Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, and everyone in his
- 3:07household believed in the Lord. Many others in Corinth also
- 3:12heard Paul became believers and were baptised.
- 3:16One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision and told him don't
- 3:21be afraid, speak out, don't be silent, for I am with you and no
- 3:27one will attack and harm you. For many people in this city
- 3:31belonged to me. So Paul stayed there for the
- 3:34next year and a half, teaching the word of God.
- 3:38But when Gallio became governor of Ikaya, some Jews rose up
- 3:43together against Paul and brought him before the governor
- 3:46for judgement. They accused Paul of persuading
- 3:50people to worship God in ways that are contrary to our law.
- 3:55But just as Paul started to make his defence, Gallio turned to
- 3:59Paul's accusers and said, Listen, you Jews, if this were a
- 4:04case involving some wrongdoing or a serious crime, I would have
- 4:08a reason to accept your case. But since it is merely a
- 4:12question of words and names and your Jewish law, take care of it
- 4:16yourselves. I refuse to judge such matters.
- 4:21And he threw them out of the courtroom.
- 4:23The crowd then grabbed Sosthenes, the leader of the
- 4:26synagogue, and beat him right there in the courtroom.
- 4:31But Gallio paid no attention. Paul stayed in Corinth for some
- 4:36time after that, then said goodbye to the brothers and
- 4:39sisters and went to nearby sangria.
- 4:43There he shaved his head according to the Jewish custom,
- 4:46marking the end of a vow. Then he set sail for Syria,
- 4:51taking Priscilla and Aquila with him.
- 4:53They stopped first at the port of Ephesus, where Paul left the
- 4:57others behind. While he was there, he went to
- 5:00the synagogue to reason with the Jews.
- 5:02They asked him to stay longer, but he declined.
- 5:05As he left, however, he said, I will come back later, God
- 5:09willing. Then he set sail from Ephesus.
- 5:12The next stop was the port of Caesarea.
- 5:16From there he went up and visited the church at Jerusalem
- 5:19and then went back to Antioch. After spending some time in
- 5:23Antioch, Paul went back through Galatia and Phrygia, visiting
- 5:28and strengthening all the believers.
- 5:31Meanwhile, a Jew named Apollos, an eloquent speaker who knew the
- 5:36Scriptures well, had arrived in Ephesus from Alexandria in
- 5:40Egypt. He had been taught the way of
- 5:43the Lord, and he taught others about Jesus with an enthusiastic
- 5:47spirit and with accuracy. However, he knew only about
- 5:52John's baptism. When Priscilla and Aquila heard
- 5:55him preaching boldly in the synagogue, they took him aside
- 5:58and explained the way of God even more accurately.
- 6:02Apollos had been thinking about going to Akaia, and the brothers
- 6:06and sisters in Ephesus encouraged him to go.
- 6:09They wrote to the believers in Akaya asking them to welcome
- 6:12him. When he arrived there, he proved
- 6:15to be of great benefit to those who, by God's grace, had
- 6:19believed. He refused the Jews with
- 6:22powerful arguments in public debate.
- 6:25Using the Scriptures, he explained to them that Jesus was
- 6:29the Messiah. Oh, Jesus, your arrival and your
- 6:44plan to save us was long planned and foretold by the prophets all
- 6:49through your scripture. Yeah, Lord, faith in you is not
- 6:53faith in a new fandangled idea. But you are the God who was
- 6:58there from the beginning. It was your creative spirit at
- 7:04creation. It was your presence all through
- 7:08that story of you and your Father and the Spirit moving
- 7:13with your people all through history.
- 7:16And here we are, 2000 years after the words were written
- 7:20that we read in today's reading. And still you are with us, and
- 7:25you move in US, and you shape the world around us and drive us
- 7:31to be workers of your Kingdom in our daily lives.
- 7:36Lord, thank you for your ongoing commitment to us, your people,
- 7:41that you draw us to yourself, and you invite us into your
- 7:45Kingdom to share this incredible news that you have for humanity.
- 7:51We are yours, and we thank you. And we pray all of this in your
- 7:55saving name, Amen.
