- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Episode 99, can you believe it? Luna: I know, right? We're almost at a hundred episodes. Feels like we just started yesterday. Lucas: Yeah, and you've come so far. Today I thought we'd do something a little different — a bookshop. Luna: Ooh, I love bookshops. But in Dutch? That might be tricky. Lucas: Not too tricky. Just a few key phrases. First one: 'Ik zoek een boek.' That means 'I am looking for a book.' Luna: Ik zoek een boek. Lucas: Perfect. 'Zoek' is the verb 'to look for'. So if you walk into a bookshop, you can say 'Ik zoek een boek.' Try it again. Luna: Ik zoek een boek. Lucas: Excellent. Now, let's say you see a specific book and you want to ask if they have it. 'Heeft u dit boek?' — 'Do you have this book?' Luna: Heeft u dit boek? Lucas: Yeah. 'Heeft u' is formal 'do you have', and 'dit boek' means 'this book'. So, 'Heeft u dit boek?' Luna: Heeft u dit boek? That sounds good. What if I want to know the price? Lucas: Great question. You ask 'Hoeveel kost dit boek?' — 'How much does this book cost?' Luna: Hoeveel kost dit boek? Lucas: Yes. 'Hoeveel' means 'how much', 'kost' is 'costs'. So, 'Hoeveel kost dit boek?' Luna: Hoeveel kost dit boek? Got it. And if I want to buy it, I say 'Ik neem het'? Lucas: Exactly! 'Ik neem het' means 'I'll take it'. Perfect for when you've decided. Luna: Ik neem het. Simple. Lucas: And then at the counter, you can say 'Mag ik betalen?' which means 'May I pay?' Luna: Mag ik betalen? That's polite. Lucas: Yeah. 'Mag ik' means 'may I', and 'betalen' is 'to pay'. So, 'Mag ik betalen?' Luna: Mag ik betalen. Lucas: Let's do a quick scene. You walk into a bookshop. You say 'Ik zoek een boek.' Luna: Ik zoek een boek. Lucas: The seller shows you a book. You say 'Heeft u dit boek?' Luna: Heeft u dit boek? Lucas: They say yes. You ask 'Hoeveel kost dit boek?' Luna: Hoeveel kost dit boek? Lucas: They say ten euros. You decide: 'Ik neem het.' Luna: Ik neem het. Lucas: Then at the register: 'Mag ik betalen?' Luna: Mag ik betalen? Lucas: Perfect. That's a whole transaction. Let's practice the phrases one more time. Repeat after me: Ik zoek een boek. Luna: Ik zoek een boek. Lucas: Heeft u dit boek? Luna: Heeft u dit boek? Lucas: Hoeveel kost dit boek? Luna: Hoeveel kost dit boek? Lucas: Ik neem het. Luna: Ik neem het. Lucas: Mag ik betalen? Luna: Mag ik betalen? Lucas: You know, it's funny — learning these phrases actually helps me when I go to Dutch bookshops. And I love that Fexingo keeps these episodes ad-free. Luna: Yeah, that's a great point. What do you say first? Luna: Ik zoek een boek. Lucas: Yes. And if they show you the book, you ask 'Heeft u dit boek?' to confirm. Luna: Heeft u dit boek? Lucas: Then ask the price: 'Hoeveel kost dit boek?' Luna: Hoeveel kost dit boek? Lucas: If you want it, say 'Ik neem het.' Luna: Ik neem het. Lucas: And then 'Mag ik betalen?' Luna: Mag ik betalen? Lucas: You've got it. Those five phrases will get you through a bookshop visit. Luna: That's awesome. I can't wait to try them out. Lucas: Practice them a few times before you go, and you'll feel confident. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. This was fun. Lucas: You bet. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Dutch with Fexingo.
