- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: At 12 o'clock, we have some shower activity. Temperature 12,
- 0:08Speaker 2: winds picked up to 70. Good afternoon, I'm Brian Medore.
- 0:12Speaker 2: There is a new millionaire in our midst. A ticket
- 0:14Speaker 2: sold online. Friday night draw, Lotto Max, worth a cool
- 0:19Speaker 2: million dollars. There's no indication of where in the province
- 0:22Speaker 2: the winner resides. Details won't be released until the holder
- 0:26Speaker 2: presents themselves to Atlantic Lotto. Plans are in motion for
- 0:31Speaker 2: the provincial government to do an assessment of St. Clair's
- 0:34Speaker 2: Mercy Hospital in St.
- 0:36Speaker 1: John's.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Government has issued an RFP to engage a team of
- 0:40Speaker 2: consultants to do a comprehensive review of the hospital. It
- 0:43Speaker 2: says it will be a key step in planning for
- 0:46Speaker 2: future health care infrastructure. The work is going to examine
- 0:49Speaker 2: the condition of the facility and the potential for expansion.
- 0:54Speaker 2: The assessment will identify required upgrades, estimate potential costs, and
- 0:59Speaker 2: explore the options for future expansion. Earlier this year, the
- 1:03Speaker 2: former Liberal government's plans for a total replacement of St.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Clair's at Kenmount Crossing were axed by the PCs due
- 1:11Speaker 2: to the exorbitant costs involved. A town on the Northern
- 1:14Speaker 2: Peninsula is protesting the downgrading of RCMP capacity and service
- 1:19Speaker 2: in the region. The mayor of Flowers Cove, Lynn Way,
- 1:22Speaker 2: says it was decided several years ago that police would
- 1:25Speaker 2: move to a hub model whereby officers would be shared
- 1:29Speaker 2: among other detachments after hours. Flowers Cove, Roddington-Bide Arm, said
- 1:34Speaker 2: Anthony in Port Saunders. The town is staffed in the
- 1:37Speaker 2: daytime by a civilian, but Mayor Way says she's aware
- 1:41Speaker 2: that many detachments in the province have similar situations in
- 1:45Speaker 2: terms of police coverage. She knows that it took officers
- 1:49Speaker 2: an hour and a half to get to the area
- 1:50Speaker 2: recently in response to a violent incident.
- 1:54Speaker 1: We've all seen an increase in the number of calls
- 1:58Speaker 1: and service calls to the RCMP. And, I mean, with
- 2:01Speaker 1: the distance that we, the RCMP, had to travel to
- 2:05Speaker 1: get to us to provide us with the service, it's
- 2:08Speaker 1: a big concern. There was a lot of concern at
- 2:10Speaker 1: the time that the RCMP decided to do this hopping,
- 2:15Speaker 1: but it went on deaf ears, of course. And now
- 2:18Speaker 1: we're back to we have a small population with big
- 2:22Speaker 1: city problems.
- 2:23Speaker 2: That protest set for 1 o'clock this afternoon. That's your news.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I'm Brian Medour.
