- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is on Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the 23rd of August and here we are ready to read
- 0:20another chapter together of Isaiah.
- 0:24Today we will continue there. There's a lot of agricultural
- 0:27kind of language in the Old Testament, isn't there?
- 0:30And God, God loves to talk about His people as the vine, and he
- 0:34talks about people taking root and blossoming or withering or
- 0:38being pulled from the earth or whatever's going on.
- 0:42And today more of that language continues as we here with
- 0:47assurance that God will indeed save His people.
- 0:52So why don't you put down whatever it is that's bouncing
- 0:55around inside your head so that we can be still and hear of the
- 1:00great provisions of our God as we read together Isaiah, Chapter
- 1:0527. In that day the Lord will take
- 1:18his terrible, swift sword and punish Leviathan, the swiftly
- 1:23moving serpent, the coiling, writhing serpent.
- 1:27He will kill the dragon of the sea In that day, sing about the
- 1:33fruitful vineyard. I, the Lord, will watch over it,
- 1:37watering it carefully. Day and night I will watch so no
- 1:43one can harm it. My anger will be gone.
- 1:47If I find briars and thorns growing, I will attack them.
- 1:51I will burn them up unless they turn to me for help.
- 1:55Let them make peace with me. Yes, let them make peace with
- 1:59me. The time is coming when Jacob's
- 2:03descendants will take root. Israel will bud and blossom and
- 2:08fill the whole earth with fruit. Has the Lord struck Israel as he
- 2:13struck her enemies? Has he punished her as he
- 2:17punished them? No, but he exiled Israel to call
- 2:22her to account. She was exiled from her land, as
- 2:26though blown away in a storm from the east.
- 2:29The Lord did this to purge Israel's wickedness, to take
- 2:33away all her sin. As a result, all the Pagan
- 2:38altars will be crushed to dust. No Asher a pole or Pagan shrine
- 2:43will be left standing. The fortified towns will be
- 2:47silent and empty, the houses abandoned, the streets overgrown
- 2:52with weeds. Calves will graze there, chewing
- 2:56on twigs and branches. The people are like the dead
- 3:00branches of a tree, broken off and used for kindling beneath
- 3:04the cooking pots. Israel is a foolish and stupid
- 3:08nation, for its people have turned away from God.
- 3:12Therefore the one who made them will show them no pity or mercy.
- 3:18Yet the time will come when the Lord will gather them together
- 3:23like handpicked grain. One by one He will gather them
- 3:28from the Euphrates River in the east to the brook of Egypt in
- 3:32the West. In that day the great trumpet
- 3:36will sound many who are dying in exile in Assyria and Egypt will
- 3:42return to Jerusalem to worship the Lord on his holy mountain,
- 3:59Jesus. You bring that fruitfulness out
- 4:02of the nation of Israel to the whole world, and we get to bear
- 4:07that fruit. We get to be a part of your vine
- 4:12as you tend to us, and we hear that here also you prune us, and
- 4:18this is not comfortable as we know.
- 4:22But we are part of your greatly beloved people, and you grow us.
- 4:28For your kingdom's sake. Thank you that you include us in
- 4:33the movement and glory of your Kingdom, in its work here, and
- 4:40in its celebration and eternity. Thank you that we are your
- 4:44people and that you are our God and you embrace us and you love
- 4:48us and you include us. You're pretty spectacular and we
- 4:52love you so much, and it's in your saving name that we pray
- 4:57Jesus. Amen.
