Transcript
- 0:00I am Dave Atrice for the band Joel Right, uh be coming over there
- 0:04soon in Australia in the next two weeks, and we're getting ready and we're
- 0:08excited as hell for a first time to be there. Hell yeah, Dave,
- 0:11thanks for joining us this one. And brother, Yeah, good to
- 0:16see you. I'm excited. I'll get all right. So does you say
- 0:21jungle right? I'm making your first ever trip to Australia next month to play
- 0:25a stringer shows with Roddy and christ starting in Brisbane and made the first before
- 0:29going through Sydney at Canberra and two or three shows in Melbourne too, I
- 0:34believe. So it isn't far away. Maybe are you pack? Get ready
- 0:37to go? I'm going to start tomorrow. Actually I mean running down the
- 0:42list tomorrow and I'm gonna start doing it and start mentally prepare myself. That's
- 0:46the hardest I got to mentally prepare myself for their flight. I bet not
- 0:51just a flight made the shows. Like from my reckoning, you've got six
- 0:53shows in six consecutive days. Either your booking agent doesn't like you or you
- 0:58guys are in a hurry. No, that's how we like it. We'd
- 1:02rather be playing every night. Man, when you when you're on tour,
- 1:03you want to play every night because if you're not, you're going to spend
- 1:06money. So we'd rather try to make some money and work every night.
- 1:08You know, Am I actually talking to a smart musician? You were supposed
- 1:18to come out last April, mate, but that chield got postponed, so
- 1:21you must be really looking forward to twelve months later. Like, I know,
- 1:23it's a bummer and these things happened with tours getting postponed, but you
- 1:26just work yourself up to do something for the first time and then all of
- 1:30a sudden you're like, oh, I ain't going. We'll go next year
- 1:33exactly. But we knew it was going to happen, you know, Anthony,
- 1:36from your booking. You know you had to ticket's already bought, so
- 1:38we just had a year to use them. So we do coming no matter
- 1:42what it happened to mind up perfect. The timing was right with writing christ
- 1:47and I think we got one short suffocation in New Zealand, so the timing
- 1:51was perfect. This time is gonna work out well, yeah, And speaking
- 1:55of your first times, this is going to be the band's first time touring
- 1:57ast right, So Are you the sort of guys you'll talk to people that
- 2:00have been here before to find out what to expect and sort to get ready
- 2:02for it. Are you just coming out of your cold and slay and hit
- 2:06me with your best shot. We're just coming out cold and hitting us with
- 2:09the best shot, and we're you know, this is whatever we're heading for,
- 2:13it's exciting because we've never been there, so whatever it is, we're
- 2:15ready to take it on, you know, A on the flip side of
- 2:19that coin, bro Like, people out here won't know you too much about
- 2:22what you expect from Jungle Ride either, so tell it. Tell us what
- 2:25we expect firstly and running through like I keep it called Jungle Rod Live Show.
- 2:30If there's any such thing as a typical shame, well as I can
- 2:35say is we're the real deal. We're a real old school doth metal band.
- 2:38I don't know people ever seen a real school old school death metal band.
- 2:42Were the real deal and usually a typical show. You know. I
- 2:46brought, you know, a lot of violence, a lot of headbang,
- 2:47a lot of old school pits, and that's what we bring when we play
- 2:51our music by a chanting too. I like chanting. I'm into that a
- 2:53lot too, A lot of chant A lot of chanting guys in like channing
- 2:58crowd, chanting back with you when you sing. You know, just don't
- 3:00go right joke topical Hey, you know you know a lot of that,
- 3:08man, I'm into that old school stuff. We'll put that call out there,
- 3:12mate, We'll try and get as many people gone on as they can.
- 3:19Now you're coming over. As we said before with Rotting Christ mate,
- 3:22so as it's a brutal double act. Man. So why do you think
- 3:24us two bands in particular make good touring partners. I think it's a good
- 3:30package because we're completely different. You know, you got death metal band and
- 3:34you got you know, writing Christ. What do you label them as.
- 3:37I mean, they're kind of like a rock star, man, They're just
- 3:39an amazing band. I think for us it's really something special because we get
- 3:44to play in front of a different crowd, you know, showcase ourselves in
- 3:46a different audience, and that's what we like doing, trying to win them
- 3:50over one by one, you know, every night, and that's what we're
- 3:52looking forward to. They like with the mentality, I guess Broy, like,
- 3:57what do you go like you're opening for Ronning Christ, Like, do
- 4:00you with no disrespect to the main band, but do you guys go out
- 4:02there to try and kick their ass every night? Or are you going out
- 4:04there just to warm the crowd up and have fun. We're gonna go up
- 4:09there warm the crowd up, man, and that's our job, is I
- 4:11mean, but we're gonna bring it as well too, you know, we're
- 4:14I like playing with them. You know, they're really very production band.
- 4:17You know, they're gonna have a lot of production going on. I know
- 4:19they're seen it before. They're great, and then you got us. We're
- 4:23more of a plug and play band, and I like that. So it's
- 4:25just gonna make us a lot more rare. We're just plugging and playing and
- 4:29just throwing it down the throat. Now you mentioned just before the Rotten Christ
- 4:32are a difficult band to label, but you guys yourself us got a lot
- 4:36going on musically, Like your music blends old school thrashed with the death metal.
- 4:40There's crossover and crouss punking there. Like where did that sound come from?
- 4:44Initially? Like when you got started, I couldn't imagine that everyone was
- 4:46doing that, you know, Like, did you sit down and have a
- 4:48meeting and say we want to do this and this or did it just come
- 4:50together? I think it just came together. That was a little bit of
- 4:54everything the recipe, you know, like a freaking style we are. We
- 4:57got a little bit of everything. You know. I grew up on Lake
- 5:00Obituary and SLD you know, all that stuff, and it's kind of that's
- 5:03kind of what we are a little bit of that, you know, and
- 5:05that's what I kind of feel us. You know, how about during like
- 5:10the writing process made like how do you find the balance between all those influences?
- 5:14Like is it trial and error? Like how do you know when you've
- 5:16gone too far with one style and not far enough with another? But I
- 5:21think for us, over the writ and it's off field, we kind of
- 5:25just feel it out and uh, you know, we keep going to it
- 5:28feels right, and when it feels like it's finished, it's when it's finished.
- 5:30You know. We kind of don't really spend too much on time on
- 5:33trying to write too long a songs. We like them, you know,
- 5:35three three and a half minutes and then cat it in that timeframe just to
- 5:40let them just you know, dissolve it all enough and then give them more,
- 5:43you know, give them a break and give them another three minute,
- 5:45you know, I like I like that length on he goes really our old
- 5:48school mate, I reckon. There's a few younger bands these days could take
- 5:51a bit of a bit of a tip from that. Just get it,
- 5:54just to stick to the basics and don't fuck around. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:00that's what we do pretty much. They going back in Tibro like Jungle Rot
- 6:04started back in nineteen ninety two, but you joining it ninety ninety four.
- 6:09Mates, So what was what was your early vision for the band back then
- 6:12and how's it changed since the early visions were doing just what we're doing now,
- 6:17you know, you know, playing some of these places like Australia and
- 6:21all these biggest festivals that we've been doing over the years. That was the
- 6:25vision. I always tried to take it as far as you can and change.
- 6:28Why we really hadn't changed much because I since I joined the band,
- 6:31I took all the writings, pretty much all the writing, and that keeps
- 6:35it, you know, pretty much jungle right the way we are, you
- 6:38know, because I'm handling most of the duties on writing, and I think
- 6:41that's what keeps the recipe going like, over that thirty plus years have been
- 6:46in a band that, mate, Like, there's been so many trends coming
- 6:48down in to the music industry, so much bullshit going on in there,
- 6:51but you guys have stuck true to your DNA. I guess, Like,
- 6:57but how difficult is it surviving and existing as a band when you refuse to
- 7:01conform to what everyone else is doing? I know what you're saying, man,
- 7:05because that's been like, you know, the saying of our career.
- 7:09You know. But you know, I've always said, you know, not
- 7:12to use any band but like Slayer, A band like Slayer, they've never
- 7:15changed their whole career. You know, it's not easy to do, you
- 7:16know, It's so easy to change from the flavor of the month or what's
- 7:19hot and what's not. And it's not either to stay true to yourself.
- 7:23And I think more bands should be applaud to do it. You know,
- 7:26you made an identity of what we are with our name and our sound,
- 7:29and you know we want to keep it. That's who we are. And
- 7:32you released your eleven studio album were called Arms, back in twenty twenty two.
- 7:36Mate, So how would you say, like we've we're talking about you
- 7:40guys sticking to your roots and nah who you are. But how would you
- 7:43say Jungle Rocks sound I guess is growing or changed over the course of your
- 7:46eleven albums. I think it progressed. Every album progresses more just been writing
- 7:54wise, Rift Rise, you know just lyrically wise, just everything production wise.
- 7:58I think you always want to top the last one. But like I
- 8:01said before, most of it's always gonna sound like drunk and wrap because of
- 8:03the writing. But you know, I think everyone's better than the last one.
- 8:07I mean, and that's our goal is to try to make the next
- 8:11one better than the last. That's what that's what we like doing. Now.
- 8:15You mentioned your role in the writing process for the music for the band,
- 8:18right, so after thirty years, I guess of writing in eleven albums,
- 8:20might like, does it get easier or harder to come up with new
- 8:24fresh materials the more you're at Easier, I mean, because we know what
- 8:28we're doing, We got a former that works, and it just comes that
- 8:31much faster. You know, I'm always picking up the guitar writing riffs.
- 8:35It just seems like it's some guitar players can relate to me. You can
- 8:39just pick up the guitar and you can start writing. You know, I
- 8:41could just start writing riffs and the ones that stick to your head you remember,
- 8:45and then you just start building them up and recording on your fall.
- 8:48Before you know, you have ten changes twelve, fifteen, twenty, and
- 8:50then eventually it just comes together. It makes a song. I mean,
- 8:54it's a beautiful thing. It is. The will be out here in May
- 9:00as we say, mate, But there's a smash and grab run the shows
- 9:01while you're in Australia. So what's the next Vajunga rod off of that night?
- 9:05What do you got planning for the rest of twenty twenty four. We'll
- 9:07come back from that and keep righting. We got a month to write and
- 9:11then we're heading to Europe for like six six weeks or even June. We
- 9:16get back in August and then we got a month to get ready to go
- 9:18in the studio September and then start all over the first and first of the
- 9:22year and twenty five sick a continual cycle in it, the cycle of metal.
- 9:28Could you ask, Yeah, it's exactly what it is. I mean,
- 9:31we'll probably release it in the spring of twenty five and then get back
- 9:33out there. But it's really amazing. You know, we're in the band
- 9:37and you you take twenty five already. You know, when when you plan
- 9:41ahead, it's amazing how fast the years we come. Because you're planning six
- 9:43seven months ahead, so the years go so much faster than they normally do.
- 9:50It's not going to take another thirty years to come back at it to
- 9:52Australia, that is it. I hope not. I think. I think
- 9:54when we come out there, we're gonna win over the crowd and I think
- 9:58we're gonna hopefully make a demand for it and we'll be back during twenty five
- 10:01as well on the new album and station. Dave, Well, thanks very
- 10:05much for your time. I just to refresh everyone his memory. Jungle Rot
- 10:07will be here with Rodney Christ from May the first, going to all the
- 10:11capital cities, so check out your socials and grave yourself a ticket.
