Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: The issue with paper bags
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I paid forty cents for a paper bag while shopping
- 0:03Speaker 1: at my local supermarket the other week. Forty cents. Remember
- 0:08Speaker 1: when they used to cost ten cents back in the
- 0:10Speaker 1: day when they swapped them out for plastic bags when
- 0:13Speaker 1: they ban those which used to be free. By the way,
- 0:16Speaker 1: forty cents And guess what they had printed on the
- 0:19Speaker 1: side of this paper bag that you buy to put
- 0:21Speaker 1: your groceries in. They had printed little Christmas trees for
- 0:26Speaker 1: goodness sake, So you chop down trees, you make paper bags,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and then you print more trees on them, and we're
- 0:31Speaker 1: supposed to be saving the planet. This is stupid. It's dumb,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and it's forty cents. It's a lot of money. It's
- 0:39Speaker 1: a lot more than free, which is what we used
- 0:41Speaker 1: to get the plastic bags for. And they're not reusable.
- 0:44Speaker 1: You put a two liter of milk in there, it's wet,
- 0:47Speaker 1: it's sulky, and it just falls straight through. It's not
- 0:49Speaker 1: a reusable thing. And here's the problem I think with
- 0:54Speaker 1: environment and no one. People are probably over the paper
- 0:57Speaker 1: bag thing and used to it by now, and take
- 0:59Speaker 1: your own bad eggs is the other thing. But I forgot,
- 1:01Speaker 1: So what are you going to do. But here's the
- 1:04Speaker 1: thing with environmental costly environmental policies. This is stuff like
- 1:10Speaker 1: you know, your emissions trading scheme, charge on the petrol
- 1:14Speaker 1: that you put in your tank, or on farmers, or
- 1:16Speaker 1: the ute tax or the cycle way bills that we
- 1:20Speaker 1: are paying for. The issue with all of this is
- 1:22Speaker 1: getting us on board with paying to fix the planet
- 1:27Speaker 1: when we're such a small part of it. You know,
- 1:31Speaker 1: are we really saving all the dolphins and whales and
- 1:35Speaker 1: turtles in the ocean by paying forty cents for a
- 1:38Speaker 1: paper bag at countdown? No? Because the ocean's still filled
- 1:43Speaker 1: with plastic. So what's the point is you know, shi
- 1:47Speaker 1: Jingping still opening coal fired power plants? Yes? Is Donald
- 1:51Speaker 1: Trump about to start drilling helpful leather for more oil? Yes?
- 1:56Speaker 1: So you know, what are we doing? What difference are
- 2:00Speaker 1: we making? Why should we bother? They just had the
- 2:03Speaker 1: climate change conference in Azerbaijan, the Petro state, for goodness sakes,
- 2:07Speaker 1: and everyone flew there on an airplane And I'm paying
- 2:11Speaker 1: forty cents for a paper bag. For more from early
- 2:16Speaker 1: edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to News Talks it
