- 0:08In our busy world, family time is frequently
- 0:12neglected. It is vital that we give attention to our
- 0:15families while we can, and it is especially important
- 0:20to give attention to what God says in his word about our
- 0:23homes. For the next few moments, let's join Scott Pauley as we
- 0:27open the scriptures and and find God's message for your
- 0:30family.
- 0:39You probably know that the books of 1 and 2 Corinthians deal
- 0:43with lots of sticky subjects,
- 0:46lots of conflict, lots of things that are frequently
- 0:50debated and discussed. They're powerful books.
- 0:54But did you know that 1 Corinthians also deals a great
- 0:57deal with the family, with marriage and the home life? In fact,
- 1:011 Corinthians chapter 11, which is a chapter that is often
- 1:05discussed and even debated in certain areas, has in it,
- 1:08I think, one of the most powerful truths for Christian marriage.
- 1:12In 1 Corinthians chapter 11 and verse number 3, we read this:
- 1:15But I would have you know that the head
- 1:19of every man is Christ, and the head
- 1:22of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ
- 1:27is God. I wish you would mark in 1 Corinthians 11, verse 3,
- 1:31man, woman, Christ. Don't miss that.
- 1:35Then if you come down to verse 11 and verse 12, listen carefully.
- 1:38Nevertheless, neither is the man without the woman,
- 1:43neither the woman without the man in the Lord. So again,
- 1:46in verse 11, you got the man, the woman, the Lord. And then
- 1:50in verse 12, for as the woman is of the man,
- 1:54Even so is the man also by the woman, but all things of God.
- 1:58So again, in verse 12, the woman, the man,
- 2:02God. Years ago, there was an old secular song
- 2:06that used to talk about just the two of us. Well, may I tell you
- 2:10today that for the Christian in marriage, it's not just the two of us,
- 2:15it's just the three of us. There are 3 people
- 2:18in every Christian marriage. They are the
- 2:22man, the woman, and Christ. Oh,
- 2:26don't miss that— the man, the woman,
- 2:29and Christ. In fact, let me take you back to an Old Testament
- 2:33scripture for just a moment in Ecclesiastes chapter 4 that I
- 2:37think articulates this truth beautifully. You see, everything you find in the Old Testament,
- 2:42there's some connection in the New Testament and vice versa. So let's compare scripture
- 2:46with scripture for a moment. Ecclesiastes 4 and verse 8 says,
- 2:50there is one alone and there is not a second.
- 2:53It's a picture in this verse of someone who is dealing with loneliness
- 2:57by themselves. Remember what God said in Genesis 2, verse 18? It is
- 3:00not good that the man should be alone. Then you come to Ecclesiastes
- 3:05chapter 4 and verse number 9, 2 are better than
- 3:08one. I want to pause and say amen to that,
- 3:12because they have a good reward for their labor. For if
- 3:15they fall, the one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him
- 3:19that is alone when he falleth, for he hath not another to help him up.
- 3:22Again, if 2 lie together,
- 3:25then they have heat, but how can one be warm alone? And if one
- 3:28prevail against him, 2 shall withstand him. So he's giving all the
- 3:32benefits of having a partner,
- 3:35of having someone. And really, this is the foundation of
- 3:39marriage. It's the foundation of friendship. Friends work together
- 3:43and rejoice together. They help one another through difficulties. They minister
- 3:47to one another's needs. They stand and fight for each other. So this
- 3:51is a picture of what marriage is supposed to be— the man and the woman.
- 3:55But then when you come to Ecclesiastes 4 and verse 12,
- 3:58it ends this way: and a threefold cord is
- 4:02not quickly broken. Hold on, I thought we'd been talking about
- 4:052 being better than one, and 2 lying together and 2 standing
- 4:09together and 2 helping one another along the journey. Yes,
- 4:13and then a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
- 4:17Can I tell you that the threefold cord is the husband and
- 4:21the wife being woven together in Christ? In fact,
- 4:25the, the third here is actually the first. He's the one
- 4:28who brings the strength. He's the Lord. We need one
- 4:32another and we both need Jesus Christ.
- 4:36And so if you go back with me to 1 Corinthians chapter number 11,
- 4:39you see again this principle: the man, the woman,
- 4:43and Christ. May I give you some simple thoughts here that I think
- 4:47will help all of us today? First of all, find your place.
- 4:50Every person has their place in a church, that's true,
- 4:54and also in a home. And when we find our place,
- 4:58things are so much better because God's a God of divine order, and there's
- 5:02always safety in his structure. I hate to say this, but in every home,
- 5:06the great struggle is always this: who gets to be the boss? Who gets
- 5:10to be in charge? Well, let's settle it today. Would you like to settle it?
- 5:13Let's let the Lord be in charge. Let's let the Lord be the Lord.
- 5:16And when God is the boss, when God is in his rightful place and
- 5:20we all find our place under him, then everything runs so
- 5:24much more smoothly. There's peace in the home. There's a principle here.
- 5:28It's the principle of headship. Listen to verse 3 again of 1
- 5:31Corinthians 11. The head of every man is Christ, the head of the
- 5:36woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God. For years
- 5:39I've heard people want to talk about the woman being under the
- 5:42headship of the man, and that's true. Of course that's true.
- 5:45We'll come to that in the book of Ephesians. It's the way God intended.
- 5:49Uh, the, the husband is to lead and to give direction.
- 5:52I've heard someone say that he's the head but she's the neck that turns the
- 5:56head. Well, that, that's true as well. But I want to point out to you
- 5:59in 1 Corinthians 11:3 that actually everyone is under a head.
- 6:04Everyone has someone over them. So the head
- 6:07of the woman is the man, but the head of
- 6:11the man is Christ, and the head of Christ is
- 6:15the Heavenly Father. You see the principle of headship here? We all
- 6:18submit. We all have someone that we answer to and are accountable
- 6:21to. This is not about value. This is about order.
- 6:25Think of it this way: if Christ has a head, and that's the Father,
- 6:29Is he any less God? No. This is proof that submission
- 6:33doesn't mean you're less than. Friend, the most valuable
- 6:37thing you can do is find your place and do your part.
- 6:40That's why in 1 Peter chapter 2, the Bible talks about the woman
- 6:44submitting to her husband even as Christ submitted.
- 6:48You see, we all simply find our place in God's
- 6:52structure. This is the Lord's way. And when we do that
- 6:56like we ought to, then God brings his greatest blessing. Just the 3 of us.
- 7:00And then not only must you find your place, but you must remember a principle.
- 7:05Would you like to know what the principle is? The principle is we are all
- 7:08dependents. Listen to verse 11 and
- 7:1212 again. Nevertheless, neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman
- 7:16without the man in the Lord. For as the woman is of the man,
- 7:19even so is the man also by the woman, but all things of God.
- 7:23We talk about dependents and we think of those as being our children, the ones
- 7:26we we're responsible to raise and to feed. But in a very real
- 7:30sense, in the Christian home, we are all dependents.
- 7:34The woman came from the man, every man comes from
- 7:37a woman, and all of us need the Lord. That's the
- 7:41principle here. There's a lot of talk today about independence, but I believe God
- 7:45has made us interdependent. Gentlemen, we need the women. Amen to
- 7:49that. Ladies, you need your husband. You need
- 7:53that that honor and that love, uh, that completion
- 7:57with your husband. And all of us, by God's grace,
- 8:01need the Lord. I want you to ponder on this. It's much to
- 8:05meditate on, isn't it? And I want you to think about what the application needs
- 8:08to be in your own home. And with the Lord's help,
- 8:12in our next study, I want to return to the same passage. We'll review
- 8:16briefly what we've learned today, and then let's talk about some
- 8:20applications of it in our family. I think it is so vital
- 8:23that we recognize the place of Christ in our marriage and then
- 8:27our place in our marriage. What place does the
- 8:31Lord Jesus hold in your home? Supposed to be the place of preeminence.
- 8:35He's supposed to be the Lord, the head, the one in charge, the one
- 8:39who sits on the, the throne room of the heart and the home. And then
- 8:43what is your place? It is simply to discover what he wants,
- 8:47his divine commands and obey him.
- 8:51And may the Lord help all of us to discover the wonderful joy
- 8:55and fruitfulness and blessing of living life every day with
- 8:58Jesus, just the 3 of us.
