- 0:59Speaker 3: with favorite Peloton instructor of many, Calli Gullickson. You know,
- 1:05Speaker 3: every so often I'll share an Instagram story shortly after
- 1:08Speaker 3: recording with an upcoming guest, and I shared the story.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Of Calli and my session. Let me just.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Say, got a lot of exciting feedback from all of you,
- 1:21Speaker 3: so I am aware that this is an episode that
- 1:24Speaker 3: many of you hurdlers have been looking forward to for
- 1:27Speaker 3: a while, so happy to bring it to the feed today.
- 1:31Speaker 3: In our chat, Callie and I talk about what it
- 1:34Speaker 3: was like for her to grow up in an athletic family,
- 1:37Speaker 3: to say the least. Her father, Bill was a Major
- 1:41Speaker 3: League baseball pitcher. Callie herself took to dance from a
- 1:47Speaker 3: young age and knew that she was destined to be
- 1:51Speaker 3: living in New York City. She gets really open and
- 1:55Speaker 3: honest about what that was like for her trying to
- 1:58Speaker 3: make it as a dancer here the challenges that came
- 2:01Speaker 3: hand in hand with that, including the pressure to have
- 2:04Speaker 3: a certain body type. Kelly shares about her journey to
- 2:09Speaker 3: finding fitness, going from cross training to lifting weights and
- 2:13Speaker 3: knowing early on that strength training was going to be
- 2:17Speaker 3: a gift in her life that would keep on giving.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Of course, she also gives us all of the details
- 2:23Speaker 3: about landing her job at Peloton, what the audition process
- 2:27Speaker 3: was like, the difficult decisions she had to make in
- 2:31Speaker 3: order to take the job, and shares what some of
- 2:34Speaker 3: her biggest struggles were from the get go, opening herself
- 2:38Speaker 3: up to trying new things, embracing her true self, being authentic,
- 2:44Speaker 3: and showing up on the regular, both for herself and
- 2:49Speaker 3: of course for Pelotons. Many many members again amped on
- 2:54Speaker 3: this Conbo grateful for Kelly's time. Happy to make all
- 2:58Speaker 3: of you happy. That's part of the goal here. So

- 3:51Speaker 2: And with that, let's get to hurdling Today.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I am sitting down with Callie Gullicksen. She is a
- 4:04Speaker 3: Peloton instructor.
- 4:07Speaker 2: How you doing today, cal.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I'm doing pretty good. I did have a don't tell
- 4:12Speaker 1: anyone well, I am saying it now, but just to
- 4:14Speaker 1: give you insight of what my morning is like, I
- 4:16Speaker 1: went two Dunkin Donuts and there definitely was a pump
- 4:20Speaker 1: of pumpkin in my ic coffee. I know, I know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: but it was just one of those days. And I'm yah,
- 4:29Speaker 1: the first one makes me excited too.
- 4:31Speaker 3: But I just need to let the listeners know because
- 4:33Speaker 3: I'm not entirely positive when this episode is dropping. It
- 4:36Speaker 3: will be soon, but today's date on recording is August seveneenth,
- 4:42Speaker 3: So this is where Cali stands with pumpkin period.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I'm a little too excited, but I know it's a
- 4:50Speaker 1: little premature. So that's how my morning's going.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I love this for you.
- 4:55Speaker 3: You know, I get a little excited the first pumpkin
- 4:58Speaker 3: of the year, but then I find that every year
- 5:00Speaker 3: as time goes on, I'm like less and less enthusiastic
- 5:03Speaker 3: about it.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I mean, I wish I wish I was like that.
- 5:08Speaker 1: You know, it's a little embarrassing how into it I am, So.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Okay, it's okay, you get no shade from me. I
- 5:15Speaker 3: also just need to throw this out there. Is this
- 5:18Speaker 3: your first podcast it is.
- 5:22Speaker 1: It is? Can you believe it?
- 5:23Speaker 3: I know it surprises me because you are such a
- 5:27Speaker 3: social media connoisseur and that you're very active over on
- 5:32Speaker 3: Instagram and TikTok.
- 5:33Speaker 2: So I felt as though.
- 5:35Speaker 3: I I'm sure, let's say this, I'm sure the requests
- 5:39Speaker 3: have been there. So I am honored that you have
- 5:42Speaker 3: decided to give me some of your time so I
- 5:44Speaker 3: can bring you into this new space.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Of course, I mean I'm excited. I also feel like,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you know, for the past year I've been with Poloton,
- 5:52Speaker 1: I just wanted to like truly settle into that and
- 5:56Speaker 1: to be honest, I would get like nervous to be
- 5:58Speaker 1: on podcasts, And the other day I was thinking, I
- 6:01Speaker 1: was like, when I saw that, you were like, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 1: you want to be on my podcast?
- 6:04Speaker 4: I said, absolutely, just because I'm like, that's it's just
- 6:10Speaker 4: my brand to kind of like not have it figured out,
- 6:13Speaker 4: like I kind of just go with the flow.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And I'm like, you know what, if I just show
- 6:17Speaker 1: up as myself, there's nothing to be afraid of, so
- 6:20Speaker 1: here I am.
- 6:22Speaker 3: I feel as though a lot of people struggle with
- 6:25Speaker 3: that mentality though I love that takeaway. If I just
- 6:29Speaker 3: show up as myself, then there's nothing to be afraid of.
- 6:32Speaker 3: But sometimes showing up as you are and being your
- 6:35Speaker 3: authentic self can be a little bit scary.
- 6:38Speaker 1: So true, so true, But I mean I do think
- 6:40Speaker 1: that with the help of Peloton and like literally showing
- 6:43Speaker 1: up and being like, well, this is me, I've definitely
- 6:46Speaker 1: gotten a lot more comfortable in my skins. So I'm
- 6:48Speaker 1: so excited to be here to chat all the things.
- 6:51Speaker 3: I also have to disclaim that last night, in preparation
- 6:55Speaker 3: for this conversation, I may or may not have stopped
- 6:59Speaker 3: at Trader joe. Now, if there is one thing about
- 7:02Speaker 3: Callie on the Internet, it is that there are articles
- 7:07Speaker 3: talking about you and your love for Trader Joe's. How
- 7:10Speaker 3: does it feel that that's the thing that comes up
- 7:12Speaker 3: when someone googles your name?
- 7:14Speaker 1: It makes me so happy. I mean I remember literally
- 7:20Speaker 1: in college, I went to school downtown at Pace University,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and I'd never heard of Trader Joe's before, and then
- 7:26Speaker 1: someone showed me the Speculo Sputter, and I was just like,
- 7:31Speaker 1: what is this hitting my taste buds? And then slowly,
- 7:35Speaker 1: you know, I would go to the one in Union
- 7:36Speaker 1: Square and it was so packed, and then slowly over
- 7:40Speaker 1: the years. I just you know, as you get older,
- 7:42Speaker 1: you're like, Okay, I can buy more stuff from my fridge.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I can fill it up because you're not going out
- 7:47Speaker 1: as much as you're staying in. I'm such a homebody,
- 7:49Speaker 1: so going to Trader Joe's is just the highlight of
- 7:52Speaker 1: my week. I can't hide it, so to have you know,
- 7:57Speaker 1: if you research my name on the internet and see
- 7:59Speaker 1: Callie Trader Joe's day, my week, my month is made truly.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Have you ever been contacted by Trader Joe's, Oh my gosh,
- 8:08Speaker 3: I wish.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And it's so funny because people are literally like I
- 8:10Speaker 1: sometimes read give Kelly an endorsement for Trader Joe's. Like
- 8:14Speaker 1: I see all these comments, I'm like, Okay, you guys,
- 8:16Speaker 1: I love that you're really supporting me in this sort
- 8:18Speaker 1: of way. But this is just like I feel like
- 8:20Speaker 1: if I did get an endorsement, which I don't think
- 8:22Speaker 1: they do, to be honest, like, that's not what I'm
- 8:24Speaker 1: striving for. Like, I truly love it, and that's why
- 8:27Speaker 1: I enjoy making content about it because I'm like, people
- 8:29Speaker 1: need to know about this.
- 8:30Speaker 3: You've got to give us at least three to four
- 8:33Speaker 3: on your weekly must have list, and let's do it
- 8:36Speaker 3: time sensitive for where we are at in the calendar year.
- 8:40Speaker 2: So you mentioned pumpkin at the top of this.
- 8:42Speaker 3: I'm not gonna hate on you if there's something seasonal
- 8:44Speaker 3: pumpkin in these four picks from you.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Totally okay, So here we go. When when I also
- 8:51Speaker 1: choose my picks, I always have to visualize myself and
- 8:53Speaker 1: like the route I take in Trader Joe's very important.
- 8:56Speaker 1: So here we go. We're going to walk by the salads.
- 8:58Speaker 1: The salads in the bag are the best. I love
- 9:02Speaker 1: the maybe Mediterranean one. Boom. Then you're gonna walk around.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Let's see, there is the pasta, the caccio pepe Ravioli's amazing. Recently,
- 9:14Speaker 1: we're gonna go around to the dairy section. I've been
- 9:17Speaker 1: loving the dairy free brown sugar creamer. I've been loving it.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It's so good. And then freezer section for the fourth
- 9:27Speaker 1: thing I'm gonna go with. I love the veggie or no,
- 9:31Speaker 1: I don't think they're veggie. I think just their their
- 9:33Speaker 1: keenewa Cowboy Burgers so good.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Okay, Wow, now we have a shopping list.
- 9:39Speaker 3: I will add all of these to my next grocer
- 9:43Speaker 3: hall that that creamer sounds delicious.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Oh especially be like froth it a little bit and
- 9:47Speaker 1: then you put it in your coffee. So good.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Love being in at home Barista, well so good.
- 9:52Speaker 3: And I would assume that maybe someone listening to this
- 9:55Speaker 3: here's just those four things and wonders, hmm, I wonder
- 9:59Speaker 3: what her diet looks like if she's constantly training all
- 10:03Speaker 3: of the time. Have you had to modify or tweak
- 10:05Speaker 3: that over the years as you've dabbled in different fitness
- 10:08Speaker 3: modalities and training at different locations.
- 10:11Speaker 1: For sure, I think that my diets have been all
- 10:13Speaker 1: over the place, and now I'm at like this stage
- 10:16Speaker 1: in my life where I'm like, I just do honestly
- 10:18Speaker 1: what feels good. People are like, do you have any restrictions?
- 10:21Speaker 1: I have zero whatsoever. I feel like I'm in this
- 10:25Speaker 1: like this kind of food of freedom where if I
- 10:28Speaker 1: want something, I'm gonna eat it. But then I also
- 10:31Speaker 1: know that if I you know, I have sometimes when
- 10:34Speaker 1: I teach at like seven thirty am, I'm like, Okay,
- 10:36Speaker 1: I know if I have a lot of sugar right
- 10:38Speaker 1: now or something super heavy, I'm gonna feel awful in
- 10:40Speaker 1: the morning. And that's going to not allow me to
- 10:43Speaker 1: enjoy my job. So it definitely like is revolved around
- 10:47Speaker 1: like how my body's going to react to certain foods.
- 10:50Speaker 1: But when it comes to diets or you know, anything
- 10:53Speaker 1: that I don't eat, I truly eat it all.
- 10:57Speaker 3: You're like me, I'm the same way, at least in
- 10:59Speaker 3: moderation anyway, right, Like, it's not like I think I
- 11:02Speaker 3: sent you last night a photo of my like little
- 11:04Speaker 3: ice cream cone. Like it's not like every single day
- 11:06Speaker 3: I'm buying the big ice cream cones.
- 11:08Speaker 2: But you know, I've got.
- 11:09Speaker 3: A box of the twelve Trader Joe's Minis in the
- 11:12Speaker 3: freezer ready for whenever I need one.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Yes, they're perfect.
- 11:17Speaker 2: They are perfect. Good to know.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Also, in my perusing of the internet on you, I
- 11:21Speaker 3: don't think I even concepted or understood how many like
- 11:25Speaker 3: quote unquote lives you've had teaching in fitness. So I
- 11:29Speaker 3: want to dial it back and talk about you deciding
- 11:34Speaker 3: to come to New York. You mentioned college. Did you
- 11:38Speaker 3: always know that you wanted to come here?
- 11:40Speaker 1: Truthfully? Yes, So I grew up in a family of athletes.
- 11:45Speaker 1: My dad was a professional baseball player, and then I
- 11:48Speaker 1: am one of six kids, so there's five girls, one boy.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And so my dad retired when I was I think one,
- 11:56Speaker 1: So I literally don't know him as a baseball player,
- 11:58Speaker 1: but he definitely instilled everything that he learned and hard work,
- 12:03Speaker 1: and you know, prior preparation prevents poor performance, you know,
- 12:07Speaker 1: in all of us. So my oldest sister, you know,
- 12:10Speaker 1: my parents were very strict on us in that sense,
- 12:13Speaker 1: like after school we had to go to our sport
- 12:16Speaker 1: you know, we had to do all of those activities,
- 12:19Speaker 1: trained super super hard. But me, I was like, you
- 12:22Speaker 1: know what, sports is not my thing. And I loved
- 12:26Speaker 1: like being no, I'm going to be different. I'm going
- 12:29Speaker 1: to be a dancer. So literally, in middle school, I
- 12:35Speaker 1: auditioned for this summer camp called School of American Ballet.
- 12:38Speaker 1: They accept around two hundred kids to go to New
- 12:42Speaker 1: York and basically it's the school that is threaded or
- 12:48Speaker 1: filtered into New York City Ballet. So basically sixth grade
- 12:52Speaker 1: I went for six or seventh grade. I went for
- 12:55Speaker 1: three consecutive summers for about six weeks, and I loved it.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I was like, by mom and dad, see I'm going
- 13:02Speaker 1: to New York. And then after that, you know, I
- 13:06Speaker 1: was auditioning for colleges, and it was hard because I
- 13:09Speaker 1: wanted to. I did so much ballet growing up, and
- 13:13Speaker 1: I also like my I feel like my personality didn't
- 13:15Speaker 1: match ballet like I wanted to be like, you know,
- 13:18Speaker 1: I loved tap growing up. Fun fact, I also clogged,
- 13:23Speaker 1: you know, yeah, which was really fun. It basically is
- 13:27Speaker 1: like your tap shoes are just like cut in half
- 13:29Speaker 1: at the bottom. And I was like an eight year
- 13:31Speaker 1: old in a class with all adults, just just clogging away,
- 13:35Speaker 1: just clogging away. I still remember, like my dance to
- 13:39Speaker 1: men in Black, Here Come Men in Black. So when
- 13:43Speaker 1: it came to auditioning for colleges, you know, when you audition,
- 13:47Speaker 1: there's no program that's truly you know, has tap, hip hop, jazz,
- 13:53Speaker 1: and includes ballet and modern. Most of them are just
- 13:55Speaker 1: ballet and modern. So I was kind of torn. I
- 13:57Speaker 1: was like, you know what, I was auditioning for all
- 13:59Speaker 1: these schools for their ballet and modern program, and I
- 14:02Speaker 1: was like, Okay, this is great. But also I was
- 14:04Speaker 1: like I want a football team. But then I said,
- 14:07Speaker 1: you know what, if I go to school in New York,
- 14:09Speaker 1: I don't care if it has a football team. So
- 14:12Speaker 1: I actually found this school Pace University Downtown. They had
- 14:16Speaker 1: a commercial dance program, which was the first dance program
- 14:19Speaker 1: like of its kind, and we literally took ballet, jazz, tap,
- 14:23Speaker 1: hip hop, modern point, ballroom. We also had voice lessons,
- 14:30Speaker 1: acting lessons, So it really prepared us for if we
- 14:32Speaker 1: wanted to do a company work, which I originally thought
- 14:35Speaker 1: I wanted to do when I was younger, but also
- 14:37Speaker 1: if you wanted to do Broadway, if you wanted to
- 14:39Speaker 1: do like the Music Video Awards, that type of stuff.
- 14:42Speaker 1: So I'm very thankful for that program, and so that's
- 14:44Speaker 1: basically what brought me to New York.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Wow wow, Okay, so you thought that you wanted to
- 14:51Speaker 3: do company work, But what happened that maybe dissuaded you
- 14:55Speaker 3: from that.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Well, one I was I'm so stink and tall and
- 14:59Speaker 1: so like I just knew like even like I was
- 15:03Speaker 1: so I feel like I was so good at ballet
- 15:06Speaker 1: because I trained so hard in it. But even so,
- 15:09Speaker 1: I was like I would always be in the background.
- 15:11Speaker 1: I feel like I would never be a soloist or
- 15:12Speaker 1: a principle because no guy was tall enough. And you know,
- 15:18Speaker 1: I know I was pretty good, but also there were
- 15:20Speaker 1: other women who were much better and they would you know,
- 15:23Speaker 1: if it came down to being the tallest, I mean,
- 15:26Speaker 1: being the best out of the tall people, they would
- 15:28Speaker 1: probably you know, get it over me. And I honestly
- 15:30Speaker 1: also like kind of started to I don't know, I
- 15:35Speaker 1: just I also think that the ballet it has you're
- 15:39Speaker 1: really really hard on yourself. So I think I truly
- 15:43Speaker 1: started to lose my love for ballet and wanted to
- 15:47Speaker 1: you know, I tried to go the rocket route, which
- 15:50Speaker 1: I did like the summer camp, and I was like, yeah,
- 15:54Speaker 1: I want to be a rocket. And then during the
- 15:56Speaker 1: summer camp, I was like, Wow, this is so hard
- 16:00Speaker 1: or do you have to really really love this in
- 16:03Speaker 1: order for me to do this for like four to
- 16:04Speaker 1: five consecutive months. And that's when I also knew. I
- 16:07Speaker 1: was like, Okay, maybe the rocket route isn't for me.
- 16:09Speaker 1: So whenever people in college were like, so what's your
- 16:12Speaker 1: end goal, I honestly didn't know. And that was the
- 16:16Speaker 1: moment that I kind of questioned, h Okay, well maybe
- 16:20Speaker 1: I'm not supposed to be dancing if I don't even
- 16:22Speaker 1: have like one, if I don't vision myself somewhere dancing.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Yeah, you mentioned that being a dancer can come hand
- 16:32Speaker 3: in hand with some pretty like maybe restrictive behaviors.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Did you ever struggle with any of that?
- 16:39Speaker 1: You know? It's funny, like, so the perfect ballet body
- 16:44Speaker 1: was my body when I was younger, like you know,
- 16:47Speaker 1: very thin, tall, long, lean lines like they say, And
- 16:52Speaker 1: so initially I didn't, but then as I got older,
- 16:55Speaker 1: as my body started to change, I definitely did struggle.
- 17:00Speaker 1: And so I think even people who have that body
- 17:03Speaker 1: type that you know is quote unquote the ballet body type,
- 17:08Speaker 1: they still struggle to be even skinnier. And you know,
- 17:11Speaker 1: I look back on photos and I was like, oh
- 17:13Speaker 1: my gosh, isn't it. It's It's nuts. How at that
- 17:16Speaker 1: time I looked at myself and I was like, I
- 17:18Speaker 1: need to be skinnier, which is just so not good
- 17:21Speaker 1: for your mental space.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, And it's a hard place to get out of, right.
- 17:26Speaker 3: How did you get to a place where you understood like,
- 17:29Speaker 3: this isn't healthy behavior, not necessarily the actions that you
- 17:33Speaker 3: were taking, but even just the way that you were
- 17:35Speaker 3: talking to yourself.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. Absolutely, I think it was one just
- 17:39Speaker 1: getting out of that space. And also it's about who
- 17:45Speaker 1: you kind of spend your time with. You become like
- 17:48Speaker 1: the people that you surround yourself with. And I didn't
- 17:51Speaker 1: even know that I was in you know, that my
- 17:55Speaker 1: confidence was so low. I just thought that was a
- 17:58Speaker 1: way that, you know, you're spoke that so much any
- 18:00Speaker 1: other people talk to themselves, because that's how the people
- 18:02Speaker 1: who I was surrounding myself with talked about themselves. So,
- 18:05Speaker 1: you know, and in ballet, you're always there's a mirror.
- 18:08Speaker 1: In dance, there's always a mirror, and you're literally in
- 18:11Speaker 1: this just small little leotard pink tights that show everything,
- 18:15Speaker 1: and not only do you see your yourself and your
- 18:18Speaker 1: peripheral religion, but you see everyone else. And it's just
- 18:21Speaker 1: such a comparison game. And I hated that. And then
- 18:25Speaker 1: so when I started getting out of school and auditioning it,
- 18:29Speaker 1: I think that's when I was like, this is not
- 18:32Speaker 1: for me, because then you go and you are so
- 18:34Speaker 1: hard on yourself and you could have been perfect for
- 18:38Speaker 1: the job, but maybe the one spot that was open
- 18:42Speaker 1: they needed someone who is exactly this size to fit
- 18:45Speaker 1: the costume. You know, there's so many other factors that
- 18:48Speaker 1: went into it, and at that time I wasn't thinking
- 18:51Speaker 1: in that sort of way, So I got really hard
- 18:55Speaker 1: on myself, and I think I kind of started to
- 18:58Speaker 1: flip the switch when I got out of the dance realm,
- 19:01Speaker 1: when I started finding a different group of friends, and
- 19:05Speaker 1: truly when I started finding fitness.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Was that lonely for you at first? When you were
- 19:13Speaker 3: making these decisions. I can't imagine that the decisions themselves
- 19:17Speaker 3: were easy, especially because you had invested so much time
- 19:21Speaker 3: in this thing that you were coming to realize wasn't
- 19:23Speaker 3: exactly the thing for you anymore.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, it was. It was very lonely, but
- 19:28Speaker 1: it also gave me so much time to In a
- 19:32Speaker 1: place like New York, where I had this huge family,
- 19:34Speaker 1: I came alone, knowing no one really and I truly
- 19:37Speaker 1: never never settled into learning who I am. I kind of,
- 19:42Speaker 1: you know, molded into who I hung around with in college,
- 19:46Speaker 1: and so this was actually a moment where I could truly,
- 19:49Speaker 1: like hone in on who I am as a person
- 19:52Speaker 1: and learning to say no to things that don't feel
- 19:57Speaker 1: good and people who don't want the best. So it
- 20:01Speaker 1: was very lonely, but also it made me truly appreciate
- 20:04Speaker 1: alone time. And I do think that time that I
- 20:09Speaker 1: kind of transitioned, because it did turn me into the
- 20:14Speaker 1: person that I am today.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Truly, I always think about what it would be like
- 20:19Speaker 3: to go to college in the city and then stay
- 20:22Speaker 3: in the city. How long have you I know you
- 20:24Speaker 3: live in New Jersey now, but how long were you
- 20:26Speaker 3: in New York proper?
- 20:28Speaker 1: Oh gosh, okay, let's see those four years? Then I
- 20:33Speaker 1: want to say seven, and then I lived in Williamsburg
- 20:36Speaker 1: for two. So I think when you go to school
- 20:40Speaker 1: in New York City, you're kind of like thrown into
- 20:43Speaker 1: so many different personalities and so many people who grew
- 20:47Speaker 1: up a different way than you. And truthfully, I do
- 20:51Speaker 1: feel like I kind of like lost myself, you know,
- 20:55Speaker 1: as a kid, I think that you have like so
- 20:56Speaker 1: much confidence in yourself and you're like your own person
- 20:59Speaker 1: and like you don't care what other people think. And
- 21:02Speaker 1: then all of a sudden, you like get away from
- 21:04Speaker 1: what you know, away from your family, and you start,
- 21:07Speaker 1: you know, meeting new people, and you do kind of
- 21:10Speaker 1: lose yourself. But then again, I'm so thankful for those
- 21:13Speaker 1: years because it made me. It definitely my college years
- 21:19Speaker 1: made me grow up quicker and made me let go
- 21:22Speaker 1: of things that were not good for me, which, you know,
- 21:24Speaker 1: if I didn't go to college here, I would have still,
- 21:27Speaker 1: you know, perhaps moved here, and then I would have
- 21:29Speaker 1: gone through that whole dilemma again and trying to do
- 21:32Speaker 1: the dance route and learning that it wasn't for me
- 21:35Speaker 1: and it wasn't making me happy anymore.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, good on you for making that decision, and
- 21:40Speaker 3: also good on you for perspective that definitely comes with time. Right, Like,
- 21:45Speaker 3: when we go through hard things, it's not out of
- 21:48Speaker 3: the normal to like be frustrated and angry and have
- 21:51Speaker 3: all of these feelings in the moment. In fact, you should, right, like,
- 21:53Speaker 3: you should experience all those feelings, that's part of it.
- 21:56Speaker 3: But to then be able to look back on the
- 21:58Speaker 3: things that we've been through and these hurdles, so to speak,
- 22:00Speaker 3: and then say, oh, okay, now I have the perspective
- 22:04Speaker 3: on why this happened for me. That's so important, so important.
- 22:08Speaker 3: You said, then you started to find fitness. What did
- 22:12Speaker 3: finding fitness look like for you, Kelli?
- 22:14Speaker 1: Yeah, So in college I did start to cross train,
- 22:17Speaker 1: so like every night we would have rehearsals, and then
- 22:19Speaker 1: the days that I wouldn't have rehearsals, I would be
- 22:22Speaker 1: going to these group fitness classes, which I loved I
- 22:25Speaker 1: was like, oh my gosh, all these people are so wonderful,
- 22:27Speaker 1: Like you know the classes that you go to where
- 22:30Speaker 1: they turn off the lights and you're in the moment
- 22:31Speaker 1: and you're like you're finding yourself and these like motivational moments.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I loved that. And then once you know, I was
- 22:39Speaker 1: auditioning and stuff outside, I had an dance agent and
- 22:43Speaker 1: it just like wasn't going anywhere, and I was like, well,
- 22:45Speaker 1: I do have to make a living somehow. So I
- 22:48Speaker 1: was also taking classes at a group fittest studio, and
- 22:52Speaker 1: I started working at the front desk there and I
- 22:55Speaker 1: kind of also loved it because I feel like I
- 22:58Speaker 1: find it. When I was younger, I did want to
- 23:00Speaker 1: be different than my family, but also put a lot
- 23:03Speaker 1: of pressure on me because they all of my siblings
- 23:07Speaker 1: went to school on scholarships and then there was me,
- 23:10Speaker 1: and from my knowledge, I kind of had to like
- 23:14Speaker 1: figure out the way to getting to college by myself
- 23:16Speaker 1: because my parents were just so used to, oh, recruiting,
- 23:20Speaker 1: this is you know, how all your siblings did it,
- 23:22Speaker 1: and like it didn't really work that way for dance.
- 23:24Speaker 1: So basically it made me feel like, you know, I
- 23:28Speaker 1: was kind of athletic like my family. And even though
- 23:32Speaker 1: the dancers are you know, they say that the athletes
- 23:34Speaker 1: of God, and they truly are. But you know, I
- 23:36Speaker 1: felt like more connected to my family and I loved it,
- 23:39Speaker 1: and I was like, look, look at me. I could
- 23:41Speaker 1: be athletic too, like I'm doing sprints and stuff. And
- 23:45Speaker 1: I do think that the community of fitness is so
- 23:48Speaker 1: so great, just like you and I like that's how
- 23:51Speaker 1: we know each other and that you can meet so
- 23:53Speaker 1: many wonderful people. And I honestly, I think looking it
- 23:58Speaker 1: made me flip the switch, whereas I could look at
- 24:04Speaker 1: my body in a different way than what I'm used
- 24:08Speaker 1: to for dance. For dance you just have to be
- 24:12Speaker 1: a certain body type and move a specific way. And
- 24:16Speaker 1: I think for when I found fitness, I was like,
- 24:21Speaker 1: I can kind of I don't have to be so perfect,
- 24:25Speaker 1: and I can do this in different ways and I
- 24:27Speaker 1: can move my body not to look a certain way,
- 24:31Speaker 1: but to feel a certain way. So once I made
- 24:36Speaker 1: that switch, like I found myself, you know, no longer
- 24:39Speaker 1: I found myself, like ditching my auditions for dance stuff
- 24:43Speaker 1: to go and take a fitness class like that was
- 24:45Speaker 1: the one thing that I needed to do, and I
- 24:47Speaker 1: felt like I was finding myself again.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Finding yourself again. We love that.
- 24:52Speaker 3: I can't even fathom how liberating that must have felt,
- 24:58Speaker 3: to not feel as though you need to be in
- 25:01Speaker 3: this one type of box anymore.
- 25:04Speaker 2: But I can imagine that it also may.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Have come with some conflicting feelings, right because you don't
- 25:14Speaker 3: know your body to be any other way. So was
- 25:17Speaker 3: that adjustment period different or difficult when you started to
- 25:22Speaker 3: you know, see muscles and maybe get a little bit
- 25:25Speaker 3: quote unquote bigger than you were previously.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, for sure. I think it's it's normal
- 25:30Speaker 1: for any human. Like even still now, I'm like confident
- 25:34Speaker 1: in my skin, but then like I try on something,
- 25:35Speaker 1: I'm like, oh gosh, this is anymore, And all of
- 25:37Speaker 1: a sudden you get into like this dark hole and
- 25:40Speaker 1: this tunnel that you can't get out of, and there's
- 25:42Speaker 1: a ceiling and you're like, help them stuck. But I
- 25:46Speaker 1: honestly I truly tuned into I think that, you know,
- 25:52Speaker 1: I did find lifting weights and I felt like, again
- 25:56Speaker 1: I was just moving my body in a way that
- 25:58Speaker 1: I wasn't used to, And there was always that struggle.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I'm not sure, like what quite got me out of it.
- 26:05Speaker 1: I think it was. I like to think of it
- 26:08Speaker 1: as like, you know when you have that like one
- 26:11Speaker 1: you know, your first love, and then you break up
- 26:14Speaker 1: and you're like, gosh, I think about this person every
- 26:18Speaker 1: single day, like will there ever be a day where
- 26:20Speaker 1: I don't think about them? And then time passes and
- 26:23Speaker 1: then you go to bed one night and you're like, oh,
- 26:26Speaker 1: I didn't even think about that person today, Oh my gosh.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I think that's kind of how my outlook on my
- 26:33Speaker 1: body seems like. It seemed like such a bigger deal
- 26:37Speaker 1: to where like I would be out with friends or
- 26:39Speaker 1: in conversations and I would be so in my head about,
- 26:42Speaker 1: oh if I order this, I can't do that because
- 26:44Speaker 1: I ordered that earlier, and you're you're not even like
- 26:46Speaker 1: enjoying life. And I think that also, once I got
- 26:49Speaker 1: that freedom of not caring what I look like, I
- 26:53Speaker 1: felt like my relationships got so much better, not only
- 26:58Speaker 1: with myself but with my friends. We all go through
- 27:01Speaker 1: moments of not being confident in ourselves, and anything that
- 27:05Speaker 1: we have going on with ourselves we kind of projected
- 27:06Speaker 1: on other people. So I feel like any any bit
- 27:09Speaker 1: of jealousy that I had that disappeared, and I just
- 27:12Speaker 1: truly found this, like wow, I love the life that
- 27:16Speaker 1: I'm living. I'm grateful for the body that I am in.
- 27:20Speaker 1: So it's definitely been a journey, but I think it
- 27:24Speaker 1: is like that scenario like your first love, like one
- 27:27Speaker 1: day you literally you constantly work on it and then
- 27:30Speaker 1: you just won't think about it and you'll be like, wow,
- 27:32Speaker 1: I didn't say anything bad about my body today. I
- 27:34Speaker 1: didn't care that I was putting down my pants were
- 27:36Speaker 1: super tight, you know, or I looked at a picture
- 27:40Speaker 1: and I was you know, because I feel like when
- 27:43Speaker 1: you're not happy with who you are on the inside,
- 27:46Speaker 1: and lifting weights made me feel confident. So there were
- 27:49Speaker 1: moments where I looked in the mirror and no matter
- 27:51Speaker 1: what I looked like, you'll always see something wrong if
- 27:54Speaker 1: you don't feel confident in yourself. And then so that's
- 27:56Speaker 1: why in my continence, I truly am like lift for
- 27:59Speaker 1: a feeling, because once you have that good feeling and
- 28:01Speaker 1: that confidence, you're gonna look in the mirror and you're
- 28:04Speaker 1: going to like what you see. But if we focus
- 28:06Speaker 1: too much on what we look like, we're never gonna
- 28:08Speaker 1: be happy.
- 28:09Speaker 3: That's so true, and I love this idea focusing on
- 28:12Speaker 3: a feeling and moving based on a feeling. I feel
- 28:16Speaker 3: as of this conversation, and it can't be the first
- 28:18Speaker 3: time that you've heard this before. Because you have such
- 28:22Speaker 3: a massive platform, over two hundred thousand followers just on
- 28:25Speaker 3: Instagram alone, I'm sure there are people that say, like, well,
- 28:28Speaker 3: it's great that you can say things like that, but
- 28:31Speaker 3: kind of come back and skinny shame you a little bit.
- 28:34Speaker 3: They're like, well, of course you feel good doing whatever
- 28:38Speaker 3: because you look like that.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Like what do you say to that?
- 28:42Speaker 1: Oh, it's it's always a struggle because I think that
- 28:48Speaker 1: it's I look back on when I was okay. So
- 28:51Speaker 1: when I was younger, I was so skinny. I would
- 28:54Speaker 1: come home from it and people would I was called
- 28:56Speaker 1: daddy long legs, and like I was just like, oh
- 28:58Speaker 1: my god, people like I'm so skinny. So I would
- 29:01Speaker 1: tell my dad and said, death have a protein shake
- 29:04Speaker 1: ready for me when I get done with dance, and
- 29:06Speaker 1: I want to eat a full cheesecake from publics. So
- 29:09Speaker 1: like I was trying to gain weight, and then when
- 29:13Speaker 1: I got in college, I wanted to be skinnier. So
- 29:16Speaker 1: I'm like, there's always no matter what size you are,
- 29:20Speaker 1: You're always gonna the grass is always gonna seem greener
- 29:24Speaker 1: on the other side, which is why we should not
- 29:27Speaker 1: compare ourselves. We should not doubt anyone else's insecurities, like
- 29:31Speaker 1: they're always there. So I think, I obviously don't react
- 29:34Speaker 1: to those, but I'm like, oh, I wish that we
- 29:36Speaker 1: could all just you know, be there for each other
- 29:38Speaker 1: and lift each other up. And we all have our
- 29:40Speaker 1: own issues, so I try not to let them get
- 29:43Speaker 1: to me, because you know, everyone's going through something. But
- 29:46Speaker 1: that's just the way it goes. You're you're gonna get,
- 29:49Speaker 1: you know, skinny, and then you're gonna be like, well,
- 29:51Speaker 1: I want a booty and I want I want that.
- 29:54Speaker 1: But then you get the booty and you're like, oh,
- 29:56Speaker 1: but I want abs, and you know, so it's like
- 29:58Speaker 1: we need to just stop trying to trying to get
- 30:03Speaker 1: abs and trying to get bust and biceps, and you know,
- 30:07Speaker 1: just literally do what feels good for you and then
- 30:10Speaker 1: you're going to enjoy the body that you're in.

- 31:02Speaker 3: My third ultimate panel, and especially at the beginning of

- 32:12Speaker 3: journey in fitness through a bunch of different studios in
- 32:15Speaker 3: New York that you coached at, You've always been on
- 32:18Speaker 3: the strength track, the same track that you're on now
- 32:21Speaker 3: at Peloton. So when you started lifting weights, was it
- 32:25Speaker 3: just like this is the feeling I'm sold on, this
- 32:28Speaker 3: is the thing that I want to commit to, or
- 32:30Speaker 3: how you ebbed and flowed in terms of the different
- 32:33Speaker 3: modalities that you really enjoy.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Let me first started, I definitely ebbed and flowed, and
- 32:39Speaker 1: then when I found strength training, I was like, wow
- 32:44Speaker 1: it also I think that's what also gave me the
- 32:46Speaker 1: confidence because truly I was like I think it was
- 32:51Speaker 1: in high school, like for our dance warmups, we would
- 32:53Speaker 1: do push ups and I'd be like, yeah, my body,
- 32:56Speaker 1: you know, I blame on my body. My body's just
- 32:58Speaker 1: not meant to do this. You know, I can't do this.
- 33:00Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden, when people were like
- 33:02Speaker 1: everyone can do this, like what do you mean? And
- 33:05Speaker 1: I started working out my push ups and I got
- 33:07Speaker 1: my pushups, and like that little thing like that, like
- 33:10Speaker 1: just being consistent and showing up, you can get so
- 33:15Speaker 1: much stronger and then it affects the rest of your life.
- 33:17Speaker 1: It flows over. So I do think that when I
- 33:21Speaker 1: found strength training, I mean I initially started, you know
- 33:25Speaker 1: obviously with like I went through the whole cycling, and
- 33:29Speaker 1: then i'd go through running, and then I think it's
- 33:31Speaker 1: normal for us to like get bored with things, but
- 33:34Speaker 1: I know that now I always come back to my
- 33:36Speaker 1: strength training. And even when I was younger, you know,
- 33:38Speaker 1: I do have scoliosis and I wasn't strong, and I
- 33:42Speaker 1: would always get such bad lower back pain. And then
- 33:47Speaker 1: when I started lifting weights, I was like, wow, all
- 33:50Speaker 1: of those little things went away. And I kind of
- 33:51Speaker 1: blamed it on my scoliosis. I blamed it on you know,
- 33:54Speaker 1: my long limbs. And then once I started strength training,
- 33:57Speaker 1: like all the small little injuries went way. And the
- 34:00Speaker 1: other thing I love about strength training is it does
- 34:03Speaker 1: it has such like a technical aspect to it, which
- 34:06Speaker 1: is also kind of brings in my dance background because
- 34:09Speaker 1: form is so so important. So it gave me a
- 34:12Speaker 1: little bit of that which I loved, like a little
- 34:14Speaker 1: bit of structure that I still needed and wanted, but
- 34:18Speaker 1: not as structured as ballet and its technique.
- 34:21Speaker 2: So yeah, as you know, I'm huge on running.
- 34:24Speaker 3: And when I first started running, the thing that I
- 34:26Speaker 3: loved was that I could make playlists that had a
- 34:30Speaker 3: certain bpm so that I could run specifically on the beat,
- 34:33Speaker 3: because I too a fun fact, not as nearly as
- 34:36Speaker 3: serious as you, but like had a background as a dancer.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Yes, shout out to all the runners out there. Because
- 34:45Speaker 1: I am not a runner. I got some phases where
- 34:48Speaker 1: I like really try to and then I don't. But
- 34:50Speaker 1: I do think that I need to definitely work on
- 34:52Speaker 1: my form and it is so mental. But I do
- 34:54Speaker 1: also feel like when I do go on runs, the
- 34:57Speaker 1: moments that I decide to, I have such these moments
- 35:00Speaker 1: of like I have these epiphanies and all these amazing
- 35:03Speaker 1: ideas that come through, and so maybe maybe I should
- 35:07Speaker 1: get back into running.
- 35:08Speaker 3: I'm like, maybe maybe I need some more epiphanies and
- 35:11Speaker 3: good ideas. Something I love about you, Cally is your
- 35:17Speaker 3: bright personality, your optimism. It's like everything that you share
- 35:22Speaker 3: it's really I mean, you go to your Instagram profile
- 35:25Speaker 3: and like everything's yellow, like it's bright like your personality.
- 35:28Speaker 3: You also, you know, have this tagline your bff in fitness.
- 35:33Speaker 3: How do you show up on the days where you
- 35:36Speaker 3: don't feel so bright and so sunny? Mm hmm.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Well, okay, So when I first got this job, I
- 35:47Speaker 1: was in Florida. We actually, like in March of twenty twenty,
- 35:52Speaker 1: Chris and I went my husband, we went to Florida
- 35:56Speaker 1: for wedding planning stuff. We ended up staying with my
- 35:59Speaker 1: parents for three months. We bought a place in Florida.
- 36:04Speaker 1: We ended up living in Florida for six months while
- 36:07Speaker 1: I was going through the whole Peloton process. And when
- 36:11Speaker 1: I got the offer, I basically was like, oh my gosh,
- 36:16Speaker 1: like this is such an amazing opportunity, but I don't
- 36:19Speaker 1: know if I want to do this. I don't know
- 36:21Speaker 1: if I want to do this. And Chris is like
- 36:23Speaker 1: Chris looked at me and I was like Kelly, and
- 36:25Speaker 1: he started like tearing. He's like, literally we started dating
- 36:29Speaker 1: when I was teaching at a group fitness studio. That's
- 36:32Speaker 1: how we originally met. And He's like, for so long
- 36:34Speaker 1: you said you joined fitness because one day there was
- 36:39Speaker 1: just a flip of a switch and you felt confident
- 36:41Speaker 1: in yourself and you felt like your personality could shine.
- 36:44Speaker 1: He's like, imagine what you can do for others. Imagine
- 36:48Speaker 1: how many lives you can change sharing your story. And
- 36:52Speaker 1: I was like, oh my gosh, Oh my gosh, you're right.
- 36:56Speaker 1: So I think it's so amazing that I have this
- 36:59Speaker 1: opportunity and I'm at and it came at the right
- 37:02Speaker 1: time when I was feeling. When I came back to Florida,
- 37:05Speaker 1: I kind of got away from the New York City
- 37:07Speaker 1: hustle and kind of got to find myself again and
- 37:09Speaker 1: my Florida self and be with my family, my parents,
- 37:12Speaker 1: and be with one of my best friends. And it
- 37:17Speaker 1: was the perfect timing because now I can show up
- 37:21Speaker 1: on the platform as my authentic self. And what that
- 37:25Speaker 1: means for me is even in my classes, I don't
- 37:28Speaker 1: like to write notes on like stories that I need
- 37:32Speaker 1: to tell, Like I even tried to once, like and
- 37:35Speaker 1: I was just like, what am I doing? Like this
- 37:37Speaker 1: is not me? So I think it's so special that
- 37:42Speaker 1: I love my work because I can show up however
- 37:45Speaker 1: I want, and it makes it more enjoyable too. Like
- 37:48Speaker 1: some people are like, how Kelly, that's your job working
- 37:51Speaker 1: out and I'm like, I know. So that's why I
- 37:53Speaker 1: have to be as authentic. That's why I have to
- 37:55Speaker 1: truly tell the members when i'm working out how I
- 37:58Speaker 1: am feeling, so that I don't feel like I have
- 38:01Speaker 1: to go in and I'm forced to act a certain way.
- 38:05Speaker 1: So that's the way that I've found teaching. And just
- 38:09Speaker 1: if something's hard for me, I'm like, you got you, guys,
- 38:12Speaker 1: I'm dying, this is hard. Please stay with me because
- 38:16Speaker 1: it makes them more enjoyable.
- 38:17Speaker 3: That way, when you first started on the platform, did
- 38:21Speaker 3: you feel like you had to show up a certain
- 38:23Speaker 3: way at the get go?
- 38:25Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, for sure. I mean, I work with
- 38:27Speaker 1: so many incredible people who have such an amazing story
- 38:31Speaker 1: and I feel like they have it all figured out.
- 38:33Speaker 1: But the truth is no one truly has it figured out.
- 38:35Speaker 1: And I felt like I needed to. This is what
- 38:38Speaker 1: I stand for. This is you know, this is my tagline.
- 38:42Speaker 1: You know you feel that pressure. And then initially I
- 38:47Speaker 1: would show up and like I would get so nervous
- 38:49Speaker 1: before class and still, you know, I still even do
- 38:51Speaker 1: because you know, being nervous is a good sign that
- 38:53Speaker 1: you care. But I think now a year in, I
- 38:58Speaker 1: think it takes that long that I can literally go
- 39:01Speaker 1: in and I have a sense of, you know, what
- 39:04Speaker 1: my mission is, what I want to do, and how
- 39:08Speaker 1: you know, members react to it, and it's it's something
- 39:10Speaker 1: that's truly, so so special, And even though it's taken
- 39:13Speaker 1: a year to get here, I'm so thankful to be here,
- 39:16Speaker 1: even though it took it took a year for me
- 39:18Speaker 1: to like finally settle in. But I think that's the
- 39:21Speaker 1: whole process of it.
- 39:22Speaker 3: I would say that a year isn't that long at all,
- 39:26Speaker 3: And I would also then follow that up by asking,
- 39:29Speaker 3: what is your mission.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Truly to show people that moving your body is not
- 39:37Speaker 1: just so many people look at it like some people,
- 39:41Speaker 1: you know, when they hear my peloton track, they come
- 39:43Speaker 1: up to me and they're like, oh, oh gosh, I
- 39:44Speaker 1: hate this today. This is that many calories. I'm like,
- 39:46Speaker 1: that's not the point.
- 39:47Speaker 2: That's not the point.
- 39:48Speaker 1: It's like, you should move your body so that you
- 39:53Speaker 1: can show up in all different aspects of your life,
- 39:56Speaker 1: and you can that is your you time where you
- 39:59Speaker 1: can truly work on your self esteem. You can see
- 40:01Speaker 1: small little building blocks that you're doing push ups on
- 40:05Speaker 1: your knees and then one day you can finally do
- 40:06Speaker 1: push ups, and that all spills over into your life
- 40:10Speaker 1: and your relationships. And I feel like my life truly
- 40:15Speaker 1: came into fruition when I found strength training and when
- 40:20Speaker 1: I found my confidence, like my relationship with Chris came,
- 40:26Speaker 1: I would have never you know, I feel like Chris
- 40:30Speaker 1: came at a time when I was confident myself and
- 40:34Speaker 1: I didn't, you know, doubt any bit of feelings he
- 40:38Speaker 1: had for me, any feelings I had for myself, or
- 40:41Speaker 1: any feelings I had for him. You know, it came
- 40:43Speaker 1: at the perfect time, and I just want to show
- 40:47Speaker 1: others that building strength can truly truly change your life
- 40:52Speaker 1: from the inside out.
- 40:54Speaker 3: I know that recently it was your one year wedding
- 40:56Speaker 3: anniversary and you shared that he was an hour late.
- 41:00Speaker 3: I'm your second date, Drew or false, that's true.
- 41:04Speaker 1: I don't know if I would have stayed Kelly, I know,
- 41:08Speaker 1: I know, but like I just felt in my gut.
- 41:12Speaker 1: And also Chris is just so like you could tell,
- 41:14Speaker 1: like you know, in his textans just he's like, I'm
- 41:17Speaker 1: so sorry because there was a race happening and he
- 41:19Speaker 1: was coming from Brooklyn, and you know how they closed
- 41:20Speaker 1: down every single street so he was in a cab
- 41:23Speaker 1: coming over to the East Village. It was at this
- 41:26Speaker 1: place called Feast, which is closed now, I believe, But
- 41:29Speaker 1: and I sat down and I was like, oh gosh,
- 41:31Speaker 1: and he's like, I'm gonna be a little late every
- 41:34Speaker 1: ten minutes. I'm so sorry. Then he's like, you can
- 41:36Speaker 1: leave and never talk to me again. I'm so sorry.
- 41:38Speaker 1: He ended up getting out of the cab, taking the
- 41:41Speaker 1: train walking from Union Square to there, and I also
- 41:45Speaker 1: was like, I can't leave now. I literally got a water,
- 41:47Speaker 1: I got a coffee, Like there's a menu sitting out
- 41:50Speaker 1: for him, Like, you know, I gotta be to the waiter.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Someone's coming, I promise, And he ended up showing up
- 41:56Speaker 1: and then yeah.
- 41:58Speaker 2: And then here we are.
- 42:00Speaker 3: Do you feel as though it's been a challenge for
- 42:04Speaker 3: you to kind of see the uptick of both your
- 42:08Speaker 3: career and build this like beautiful new chapter for you
- 42:12Speaker 3: and your husband at the same time.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Definitely, for sure. But he does like keep me so grounded,
- 42:22Speaker 1: and I do like to keep my work and well, honestly,
- 42:28Speaker 1: I was gonna say I like to keep them separate,
- 42:30Speaker 1: but yet again, I'm so I feel like I like
- 42:34Speaker 1: overshare on Instagram and everything, Like so many people know
- 42:37Speaker 1: so many things about my life. But yet again, like
- 42:39Speaker 1: that's that's just me being authentic, you know, Like I
- 42:43Speaker 1: feel like for me, I just need, like need to
- 42:45Speaker 1: share everything just because that's how I'm feeling in the
- 42:48Speaker 1: moment and this is what's going on in my life
- 42:49Speaker 1: and this is what you should know. But it's so
- 42:52Speaker 1: rewarding too, because Chris we started dating when I was
- 42:58Speaker 1: I was teaching at five am in the morning, so
- 43:00Speaker 1: I would wake up at three twenty and four to
- 43:03Speaker 1: five times a week, and then like I would go home,
- 43:06Speaker 1: I would take a nap, maybe go on to a
- 43:08Speaker 1: Trader Joe's, you know the deal, and then I would
- 43:10Speaker 1: go back and I would teach later. And like Chris
- 43:14Speaker 1: saw this like whole transformation of where I'm at now.
- 43:18Speaker 1: So it's also so rewarding that we're at this place
- 43:21Speaker 1: where I'm like wow, and we like sometimes sit down,
- 43:23Speaker 1: we're like wow, remember when I was doing that? Remember
- 43:26Speaker 1: when you were doing that? Like it's so cool and
- 43:28Speaker 1: we're so thankful, and it's nice that we definitely like
- 43:31Speaker 1: keep each other grounded, and I have my family to
- 43:34Speaker 1: keep me grounded. Two And just finding those friends who
- 43:37Speaker 1: have been with me from the beginning to be like
- 43:40Speaker 1: to keep me you know, I know, like Peloton is
- 43:43Speaker 1: so well known to people, so like even yesterday I
- 43:46Speaker 1: was at the dog park and I'm just like chilling,
- 43:48Speaker 1: like Jarley, gimme here, and then someone post to me
- 43:50Speaker 1: It's like, wait, are you Cali, And I'm like yes,
- 43:53Speaker 1: and I was like, oh my gosh, I forgot I'm
- 43:54Speaker 1: and I'm sitting there. I'm like, oh my gosh, they've
- 43:55Speaker 1: probably seen me in the worst like outphit Like, you know,
- 43:58Speaker 1: I'm like, oh gosh, but I forget. But I also, like,
- 44:02Speaker 1: you know, I like being very relatable in that sort
- 44:06Speaker 1: of way.
- 44:06Speaker 3: So was it an adjustment for you to get more
- 44:10Speaker 3: open to sharing so much of yourself on social And
- 44:13Speaker 3: then the follow up to that question is have you
- 44:17Speaker 3: had a moment where you thought like I need to
- 44:20Speaker 3: completely retreat from this, because I know that I have.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Was there a moment I honestly feel like when again
- 44:30Speaker 1: it's going to go back to my confidence when I
- 44:33Speaker 1: no longer you know, allowed other people's opinions to affect me.
- 44:40Speaker 1: I truly would, and even now, like I post stuff
- 44:43Speaker 1: and I don't even look back, like like people you know,
- 44:48Speaker 1: send me messages and like I sometimes I don't even
- 44:49Speaker 1: look at them, like I post and then I get
- 44:51Speaker 1: on with my day, and I think that's the best
- 44:52Speaker 1: way to do it. Sometimes we get so sucked into
- 44:55Speaker 1: this like social media that's not reality, you know. And
- 44:59Speaker 1: even though I do share so much, there's also so
- 45:02Speaker 1: much that I don't share. So I think it's you know,
- 45:07Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of if there was a switch.
- 45:11Speaker 1: I think I just started going for it, and I
- 45:12Speaker 1: think that's when actually people just started relating to me
- 45:17Speaker 1: a little bit more, and you know, we've started finding
- 45:21Speaker 1: things in common.
- 45:22Speaker 3: People forget I see, like some sort of curated timeline
- 45:25Speaker 3: that you've put out for your day, and there's so
- 45:28Speaker 3: much that's happening that isn't there.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Yes, Like there's so much going on in our lives
- 45:34Speaker 1: that it's also like why would I share that with people?
- 45:37Speaker 1: You know? And I do try to. I do try
- 45:39Speaker 1: to be as authentic as possible and show what's happening
- 45:43Speaker 1: in my life. But yet again, it's like, you don't
- 45:45Speaker 1: know what happened during those three hours. You don't know
- 45:47Speaker 1: the phone call that I had with one of my
- 45:49Speaker 1: siblings that I'm in a bad mood from and like
- 45:52Speaker 1: I can't fall asleep because of it, you know, like
- 45:54Speaker 1: that those little things that I'm sure that would make
- 45:57Speaker 1: me more relatable, But yet again it's like I just
- 46:00Speaker 1: need to I need a moment to process all of
- 46:03Speaker 1: that before I tell other people, you know. And I'm
- 46:06Speaker 1: trying to think if there was a time where I
- 46:08Speaker 1: posted something and I like retracted it, I don't think,
- 46:11Speaker 1: I mean probably, but I don't think it was anything
- 46:13Speaker 1: too big of a deal where I remember.
- 46:17Speaker 3: A year now into your journey at Peloton, what would
- 46:19Speaker 3: you say has been one of the biggest hurdles for
- 46:23Speaker 3: you so far?
- 46:24Speaker 1: Well, one was making the decision to move back here
- 46:28Speaker 1: because I think I think New York truly sucks you in.
- 46:33Speaker 1: And then you're like, I'm never going to leave this place.
- 46:35Speaker 1: And then COVID happened, and you're kind of like, okay, okay,
- 46:40Speaker 1: this is a major hurdle. What do I do now?
- 46:43Speaker 1: And like I made the decision to go back to Florida,
- 46:46Speaker 1: and I told myself I would never live back there again.
- 46:49Speaker 1: But then there was just something pulling me back. And
- 46:51Speaker 1: my poor husband was like, what he's from Pennsylvani he's like,
- 46:54Speaker 1: we're moving to Florida what so, like I dragged him
- 46:56Speaker 1: down there and then like we created this like wonderful
- 46:59Speaker 1: life together and I was like visioning, you know, us
- 47:01Speaker 1: having kids down there and like being close with my
- 47:04Speaker 1: family again and all this stuff. And then this job
- 47:06Speaker 1: opportunity came and like I could not pass it up whatsoever.
- 47:10Speaker 1: So it was also making the decision to like, wow,
- 47:13Speaker 1: I thought that I like got out of New York
- 47:16Speaker 1: and it was such a hard decision, and now I
- 47:21Speaker 1: have to go back and I already kind of made
- 47:23Speaker 1: some roots here. I think that was like one of
- 47:26Speaker 1: the biggest hurdles. And I of course miss Florida so
- 47:29Speaker 1: so much, but I'm also so young and I have
- 47:32Speaker 1: so much life to live, and I knew that if
- 47:34Speaker 1: I didn't take this opportunity, I would literally look back
- 47:37Speaker 1: and regret it for the rest of my life. For
- 47:39Speaker 1: the rest of my life. It would literally like I
- 47:42Speaker 1: would go to bed at night and be.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Like, what did I do?
- 47:45Speaker 1: And I'm so happy that we chose to, you know,
- 47:47Speaker 1: move back here, and it's been a wonderful experience. So
- 47:51Speaker 1: that was, you know, the first one when this initially started.
- 47:54Speaker 1: This second one I would say, hmm, you do get
- 48:03Speaker 1: so much. The members are all so wonderful. But it's
- 48:09Speaker 1: also you know, when I first started, I think it
- 48:13Speaker 1: was I started to creep back into that having to
- 48:17Speaker 1: be perfect and having to say certain things and have
- 48:23Speaker 1: to be light. And I think that's what makes Peloton
- 48:25Speaker 1: so special, is that there is an instructor for every
- 48:28Speaker 1: single person, no matter what you're feeling today. You know,
- 48:34Speaker 1: the music, you like, the type of class you want
- 48:36Speaker 1: to take. And so I think it was a hard
- 48:40Speaker 1: pill to swallow at first, because you know, I would
- 48:43Speaker 1: read things and be like, oh my gosh, oh my gosh,
- 48:45Speaker 1: like that's what they think, and I would like try
- 48:48Speaker 1: to change myself, and then I would go like the
- 48:50Speaker 1: next class, I would try to change myself, and then
- 48:51Speaker 1: I'd be like, what am I doing. I'm sinking into
- 48:54Speaker 1: like my young like you know how I was in
- 48:58Speaker 1: my you know, early and mid twenties, Like what am
- 49:01Speaker 1: I doing? And so I think that was the biggest hurdle.
- 49:04Speaker 1: And here we are again a year later, and that
- 49:07Speaker 1: stuff doesn't even phaze me.
- 49:08Speaker 3: I'm just you know, yeah, And you clearly surround yourself
- 49:11Speaker 3: with a lot of people who have dealt with the
- 49:14Speaker 3: same thing when it comes to not taking some of
- 49:18Speaker 3: this feedback. So personally, what would you say some of
- 49:21Speaker 3: the best advice has been for you to help get
- 49:23Speaker 3: over that specific hurdle.
- 49:25Speaker 1: It's funny. My husband's always like, CALLI, you literally read
- 49:28Speaker 1: ten good things about you, and you're not focusing on that.
- 49:31Speaker 1: You're literally focusing on the one bad thing. I'm like,
- 49:34Speaker 1: you're so right. So it's so funny because you know,
- 49:39Speaker 1: people do say I have this like sunshine energy and
- 49:43Speaker 1: like so happy all the time. But I'm like, oh gosh,
- 49:46Speaker 1: those do get to you. So I would say the
- 49:48Speaker 1: best advice I would have is honestly, not not even
- 49:52Speaker 1: to look at the stuff. Sometimes you're like out looking
- 49:54Speaker 1: for it. You know, you're which is why do we
- 49:57Speaker 1: do that to ourselves? We like want to know what
- 49:59Speaker 1: people are saying. Who cares? Who cares? You know, I
- 50:03Speaker 1: can say that as many times. I can say that
- 50:06Speaker 1: so many times, but yet again, we are human. We
- 50:09Speaker 1: are human, and so no matter how confident feeling about myself,
- 50:11Speaker 1: no matter how happy I am with myself at the moment,
- 50:15Speaker 1: we're always we're always gonna you know, we are humans.
- 50:18Speaker 1: We have emotions, and it's normal, And I think that's
- 50:20Speaker 1: that's the most important thing too. Everyone everyone deals with
- 50:24Speaker 1: these emotions. So it's also like feel sad, yes, but
- 50:27Speaker 1: also do not let that ruin your day. You have
- 50:30Speaker 1: so many other wonderful things happening for you. You got pumpkin
- 50:34Speaker 1: in your coffee, You're going to Trader Joe's later, Like,
- 50:37Speaker 1: let's be honest, you can carry three bags instead of
- 50:39Speaker 1: two bags.
- 50:41Speaker 2: Three bags is a big undertaking.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. It really is. Like even sometimes I'm like,
- 50:45Speaker 1: what did I do this? What did I do? Is
- 50:47Speaker 1: like my biceps I have, they're burning, I have sweat
- 50:50Speaker 1: dripping down my back. But it's worth it, you know, it's.
- 50:53Speaker 2: So worth it. It's so worth it, you know.
- 50:55Speaker 3: To the one more note on the negative talk negative
- 50:58Speaker 3: moments thing. I remember when I say down with Tunday
- 51:01Speaker 3: one of the times that she was on the show,
- 51:02Speaker 3: and she said when she started at Peloton that someone
- 51:05Speaker 3: gave her the advice saying and asking her a question,
- 51:09Speaker 3: and the question was would you ever write something nasty
- 51:13Speaker 3: on someone's Instagram? And Tunday was like, no, why would
- 51:16Speaker 3: I do that? And the person asked her again, like
- 51:18Speaker 3: would you ever write something nasty? On somebody's Instagram and
- 51:22Speaker 3: tun Day was like no, and this person said to her, well,
- 51:26Speaker 3: then why would you ever take something that someone that
- 51:29Speaker 3: would do that would say to you to heart.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Yes, that is such a good point.
- 51:33Speaker 3: You even said it earlier when you were talking about
- 51:36Speaker 3: the circle of individuals that you surrounded yourself with when
- 51:38Speaker 3: dance was such a big part of your life, and
- 51:40Speaker 3: how the way that they were speaking to themselves and
- 51:42Speaker 3: about others didn't really influence you. Well, like, just because
- 51:45Speaker 3: these people may not be around you in person doesn't
- 51:48Speaker 3: mean that we can't be influenced by what we're seeing
- 51:51Speaker 3: of course on social So be smart about who you're
- 51:55Speaker 3: letting into your space and what you're doing with that
- 51:57Speaker 3: information in your space, and surrounding yourself to the best
- 52:00Speaker 3: of your ability with the best thing that you can.
- 52:03Speaker 1: Absolutely. I also heard one thing. Oh gosh, I forget
- 52:07Speaker 1: which instructor has said it before, but they're saying, you
- 52:11Speaker 1: know what if we post something and we lose followers
- 52:14Speaker 1: and and you know, these people no longer want to
- 52:18Speaker 1: take our classes, they no longer you know, relate to us,
- 52:21Speaker 1: or you know, they're mad at us for some reason.
- 52:23Speaker 1: And they said, well, you know, what Those people were
- 52:26Speaker 1: never on your side, They were never part of your community,
- 52:29Speaker 1: if that's the case, like they're you know, And I
- 52:32Speaker 1: was like, that's so true. They were they were never
- 52:34Speaker 1: meant to be there, and they were never meant to
- 52:36Speaker 1: be in your comments section writing that mean thing about you,
- 52:39Speaker 1: you know. So I'm like, you're right, you're you're You're
- 52:42Speaker 1: people who want to who are on your side, who
- 52:45Speaker 1: are rooting for you, are going to be there for you.
- 52:47Speaker 1: So why even let you know the ones who somehow
- 52:50Speaker 1: get in and that affect your entire day?
- 52:54Speaker 2: Yeah, totally totally.
- 52:56Speaker 3: Again a year back in New York area, how does
- 53:00Speaker 3: it feel now compared to how it felt when you
- 53:03Speaker 3: had all that anxiety about taking the job in the
- 53:05Speaker 3: first place.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Oh gosh, so much better because when I so, I
- 53:11Speaker 1: had to go from Florida to New York to audition,
- 53:14Speaker 1: and I had to quarantine for two weeks, and so
- 53:17Speaker 1: I was quarantining literally like by Harold Square, and I
- 53:22Speaker 1: went into I've never had like, I started feeling homesick,
- 53:27Speaker 1: I literally because they were just Harold Square was I
- 53:30Speaker 1: felt unsafe. I've never seen it the way it was.
- 53:33Speaker 1: And this was in August of twenty twenty, and I
- 53:37Speaker 1: was terrified and I had to stay in that hotel
- 53:40Speaker 1: room for two weeks, and I remember calling my parents
- 53:44Speaker 1: and crying and being like what did I do? Like
- 53:47Speaker 1: I don't know if I could. I don't know if
- 53:48Speaker 1: I could live back here. This is this is not
- 53:51Speaker 1: the New York that I know. And you know, my
- 53:57Speaker 1: parents are so like, you know, they like love me,
- 54:01Speaker 1: they loved me living by them, but also they like
- 54:03Speaker 1: know that they always pushed us to go after our
- 54:06Speaker 1: dreams and you know all of that. So my dad
- 54:09Speaker 1: was like, just come home, just come home, it's fine,
- 54:12Speaker 1: and I was like I was like, Dad, what, and
- 54:14Speaker 1: like that's not even an option, Like I'm going to stay,
- 54:17Speaker 1: but like this is so hard. I don't know if
- 54:19Speaker 1: like this is the New York that I know. And
- 54:22Speaker 1: so I ended up staying. Chris actually came and surprised
- 54:25Speaker 1: me and stayed with me for a few days just
- 54:27Speaker 1: to call my nerves a little bit, and I auditioned it.
- 54:30Speaker 1: I'm so happy that I stayed and had my my audition,
- 54:34Speaker 1: And then yeah, where were you.
- 54:36Speaker 2: When you found out that you were part of everything?
- 54:39Speaker 1: I was in Florida in my house and it was
- 54:44Speaker 1: you know I had. I had a feeling it was
- 54:48Speaker 1: such a long You know, everyone's process is all different
- 54:51Speaker 1: lengths of time based on what they need at the moment,
- 54:54Speaker 1: so mine was super super long. And so I remember
- 54:57Speaker 1: when I would be waiting, I would check my email
- 54:59Speaker 1: every single day, check my phone every second, like I
- 55:02Speaker 1: was just paralyzed. I couldn't do anything else. But yet again,
- 55:06Speaker 1: I was so happy with where I was at that
- 55:08Speaker 1: I was like, you know what. I also think that's
- 55:11Speaker 1: what made me honestly get through the process because guy
- 55:14Speaker 1: kind of had like a care free like I'm also
- 55:17Speaker 1: so happy with what I'm doing now. So if I
- 55:18Speaker 1: don't get it, it's okay. But I think just not
- 55:21Speaker 1: knowing living in a state of am I going to
- 55:23Speaker 1: stay here? Like I would decorate an entire room and
- 55:27Speaker 1: then be like what am I doing? I may move
- 55:29Speaker 1: like what's happening? So Chris always tells this story how
- 55:33Speaker 1: he would see me. I would to get my mind
- 55:36Speaker 1: off things. I would listen to Gabrielle Bernstain the Universe
- 55:40Speaker 1: has your back in my ears, and I would have
- 55:43Speaker 1: these like hand weights and like I would literally have
- 55:47Speaker 1: the armband on, you know, with my phone hooked in
- 55:50Speaker 1: and I would be walking. He said. One day he
- 55:51Speaker 1: looked outside and there's this lady with a high blonde ponytail,
- 55:56Speaker 1: and I'm literally like with my arms swinging back and
- 55:58Speaker 1: forth like fast walking. Chris looks out the window, he said,
- 56:01Speaker 1: what is she doing it to do a double take,
- 56:04Speaker 1: and he's like, yeah, remember when you go on those walks.
- 56:07Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my gosh, you're right. I would just
- 56:09Speaker 1: go on these walks just to clear my head and
- 56:13Speaker 1: truly just know that. You know, the gabriel Bernstein books,
- 56:17Speaker 1: they really held it was like the universe does in
- 56:19Speaker 1: my back, whatever happens, it's like, you know, meant to
- 56:21Speaker 1: be truly.
- 56:22Speaker 3: I mean, I think we can all relate to having
- 56:24Speaker 3: these moments where we're like constantly checking our inbox, We're
- 56:27Speaker 3: constantly waiting for the thing. But to go back to
- 56:30Speaker 3: what you reiterated was your perspective, you were like, yes,
- 56:32Speaker 3: I really want this, but also I have so much
- 56:35Speaker 3: good in my life. So it's that idea that you know,
- 56:38Speaker 3: just like Gabrielle says, like the universe has your back,
- 56:41Speaker 3: So what is meant to happen will happen. Easier said
- 56:44Speaker 3: than done. Sometimes to accept that mentality. But when you do,
- 56:48Speaker 3: it just makes things.
- 56:49Speaker 2: A little later, you know, Yes.
- 56:52Speaker 1: Like sometimes we just stress out about things a little
- 56:55Speaker 1: too much. I think that's like also my my saying
- 56:58Speaker 1: that I say in classes, b yo, bring your own
- 57:00Speaker 1: energy because we always have things happen to us. And
- 57:04Speaker 1: I did hear someone. I forget where I heard it,
- 57:08Speaker 1: but I heard we all have things happen to us.
- 57:10Speaker 1: But it's what we do with those things that happen
- 57:13Speaker 1: to us our next step. Are we going to decide
- 57:16Speaker 1: to let that ruin our entire day or are we
- 57:19Speaker 1: just gonna go at the flow, let it affect us
- 57:21Speaker 1: a little bit, you know, have it on our mind,
- 57:24Speaker 1: but not completely change you know, our energy, and you
- 57:29Speaker 1: know you always have. You have two paths. You can
- 57:31Speaker 1: go down the path where you're just sad and negative,
- 57:35Speaker 1: or you can choose to see the bright side of
- 57:37Speaker 1: things and know that either way you're going to get
- 57:41Speaker 1: through it because we always do. We always do, and
- 57:44Speaker 1: it sucks in the moment, and then you always look
- 57:46Speaker 1: back and you're like, Okay, I did that, Okay.
- 57:50Speaker 3: Perfect, I did that, And that prepares you for and
- 57:53Speaker 3: informs what you do going forward.
- 57:55Speaker 2: You can take those experiences and use them to your benefit.
- 57:58Speaker 3: But you have to make that choice that that's exactly
- 58:00Speaker 3: how you're going to utilize the experience. When some times
- 58:04Speaker 3: your Instagram page again they see someone with over two
- 58:06Speaker 3: hundred thousand followers their fitness BFF. When you look in
- 58:11Speaker 3: the mirror, what is it that you seeing looking back
- 58:13Speaker 3: at you?
- 58:14Speaker 2: Keli M, I.
- 58:17Speaker 1: See someone who is goofy, which I haven't. You know,
- 58:23Speaker 1: when I was younger, people used to say I was weird,
- 58:25Speaker 1: and then I lost that bit of me that made
- 58:28Speaker 1: me weird, and I try to conform and try to
- 58:30Speaker 1: be like everyone else. And so now when I look
- 58:33Speaker 1: at myself in the mirror, I'm I see myself as
- 58:36Speaker 1: I am. I'm this tall, like you know, I used
- 58:41Speaker 1: you know, I used to not wear heels because I
- 58:43Speaker 1: was so tall. Like how that's so not okay? Oh,
- 58:47Speaker 1: Like I used to make myself smaller. You know. I
- 58:50Speaker 1: used to hide in the back in dance class, and
- 58:53Speaker 1: my dance teachers would say, what are you doing? You
- 58:54Speaker 1: need to get in the front, and I wouldn't get
- 58:56Speaker 1: in the front because I was so afraid of my
- 59:01Speaker 1: other friends in class, thinking that I had like an
- 59:04Speaker 1: ego standing front and center, like what like that's and
- 59:09Speaker 1: I'm like, these people know you, Kelly, Like why would
- 59:11Speaker 1: you ever why would you ever think that these people
- 59:13Speaker 1: would you?
- 59:14Speaker 4: Know?
- 59:14Speaker 1: So I'm so happy that I now look in the
- 59:17Speaker 1: mirror and I don't care what anyone else thinks. I
- 59:22Speaker 1: know who I am and I love who I am.
- 59:27Speaker 1: And for a long time I didn't love who I was.
- 59:29Speaker 1: I wanted to change what I looked like. I wanted
- 59:31Speaker 1: to be someone I wasn't. I wanted to conform to
- 59:35Speaker 1: I saw other people's success and thought that was gonna
- 59:38Speaker 1: be my way of success. And I think now looking
- 59:41Speaker 1: at myself in the mirror, I'm like, Okay, I see
- 59:43Speaker 1: this confident gal who loves Trader Joe's who it knows
- 59:50Speaker 1: that there's definitely gonna be some hurdles in life and
- 59:54Speaker 1: we're gonna get through them.
- 59:57Speaker 3: And yeah, yeah, and yeah, I love it.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: I love it.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: I'm like just so happy that we were able to
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: make this happen. My final question for you, right now,
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: my friend, you have an opportunity to offer yourself a
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: piece of advice. Let's go back to your dance era,
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: looking back at the girl who feels all sorts of
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: unsure in her body and lacking a little bit of
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: that self confidence. You have an opportunity to offer her
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: one piece of advice back at that hurdle moment right now,
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: What do you tell her?
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: You have so much to offer, that is what makes
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: you you so stand in that there is no other you.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: So stand in that space, take up that space and
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: own that space, because there's never going to be another, Cali,
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: and so be CALLI.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Beigger Bigger.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: I love it, Cally. I'm so happy that we were
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: able to make this happen. How do the hurdlers follow
