- 0:21Jennifer Davis: I do remember it with Courteney Cox.
- 0:23Jennifer Davis: She was good in that.
- 0:24Jennifer Davis: She was funny.
- 0:25Jennifer Davis: Okay, so this definitely got people's attention over the weekend.
- 0:29Jennifer Davis: A cougar was spotted near the pickleball and basketball courts at Westside Park in Redmond, and wildlife officers ended up tracking it through the Bridle Crest Trail before chasing it away from the neighborhood.
- 0:42Jennifer Davis: Officials said there were no attacks or injuries, but they did temporarily close parts of the trail system while checking the area.
- 0:51Jennifer Davis: So if you walk those trails early in the morning or around dusk, probably keep your head up for a bit, especially if you've got kids or dogs with you.
- 1:04Dan Schulz: Soul Food Coffee House is doing another one of its long-running poetry nights on Thursday, May 21st, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, and you know, seriously, these things have become a real Redmond institution at this point.
- 1:18Dan Schulz: Featured readers go first from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, and then they open it up for anyone who wants to jump in during the second half.
- 1:26Dan Schulz: Michael Dylan Welch curates the entire thing, and the crowd usually ranges from serious local poets to people reading in public for the first time.
- 1:34Dan Schulz: It's a really good excuse to hang out in the bookstore cafe for a couple hours and hear something different.
- 1:42Jennifer Davis: Northwest Brewing is hosting live music from Bach to Rock student bands on Thursday, May 21st, and this feels like one of those easy local nights where you just show up, grab some food, and hang out for a while.
- 1:56Jennifer Davis: The younger musicians get a real stage setup.
- 1:59Jennifer Davis: The crowd's usually super supportive, And the whole thing leans more community hangout than formal concert.
- 2:05Jennifer Davis: Expect rock covers, nervous first songs, proud parents filming everything, and probably at least one kid who's weirdly good at guitar already.
- 2:15Dan Schulz: and if you're the weird kid who's oddly good at guitar, you know who you are.
- 2:19Jennifer Davis: It's a good excuse to get out on a Thursday night without spending much money.
- 2:25Dan Schulz: Speaking of fun, the Redmond Community Center at Marymoor Village is doing a free family movie night on Thursday, May 21st from 5:30 to 7:30, and yes, they are encouraging people to actually sing along.
- 2:38Dan Schulz: The movie's rated G or PG, popcorn's included, and the whole thing is built for families with younger kids who just want an easy evening out without spending a fortune.
- 2:49Dan Schulz: Registration only requires one person per family, and groups are capped to six people.
- 2:55Dan Schulz: This is one of those old-school community center events that people forget still exist, but they are still happening, and we are telling you about this one, so you should go and have fun with it.
- 3:06Jennifer Davis: Okay, so this one's probably gonna pull a pretty solid crowd.
- 3:09Jennifer Davis: Reign FC legend Lauren Lou Barnes is joining author Celia Castro-Malaspina at Brick Mortar Books on Thursday, May 21st from 6:00 to 7:30 for a conversation about women's soccer, sports history, and Castro-Malaspina's new, book, Girls With Goals.
- 3:31Jennifer Davis: The event is tied into the city's Football For All series leading into World Cup 2026, and former pro player Justi Baumgart is moderating the discussion.
- 3:42Jennifer Davis: They're also doing prize drawings and a meet and greet afterward if you've got younger soccer players in the family.
- 3:49Dan Schulz: Before we go on, we have to remind you that it is Tuesday, and you know what that means.
- 3:53Dan Schulz: Every Tuesday you've got a decision to make.
- 3:56Dan Schulz: You can grab some boring lunch, or you can head on over to La Tia Angelina for their legendary Taco Tuesday deal.
- 4:05Dan Schulz: We're talking $1.50 tacos made with recipes that Brian's mom, Angelina, brought over from Jalisco, Mexico.
- 4:12Dan Schulz: She still makes all of the salsas and the sauces by hand to this day.
- 4:17Dan Schulz: Now, a couple things.
- 4:19Dan Schulz: First, this isn't some chain restaurant trying to do Mexican food.
- 4:23Dan Schulz: Brian and Amelia have been running this food truck for five years now, and their oldest son even jumps in to help when things get busy.
- 4:30Dan Schulz: That's three generations in every single bite.
- 4:34Dan Schulz: Now, here's what we need to tell you specifically for today.
- 4:37Dan Schulz: You're gonna like this.
- 4:38Dan Schulz: Their regular spot is over at 1624 145th Place Southeast in Bellevue.
- 4:44Dan Schulz: That's near the QFC and the Tiki Masala restaurant.
- 4:48Dan Schulz: But today is special because today they're actually over at the Triangle Apartments for an evening run.
- 4:55Dan Schulz: Brian and Amelia really care about their community, and it shows in every single taco they make.
- 5:00Dan Schulz: this is a great chance for you to check them out.
- 5:02Dan Schulz: This is the kind of cool stuff they do, Jennifer.
- 5:04Dan Schulz: Sometimes they go to actual apartment complexes, around dinner time when everyone's coming home from work.
- 5:10Dan Schulz: They set up and people just come out, grab tacos, grab some great Mexican food.
- 5:15Dan Schulz: This is a great thing, Redmond.
- 5:16Dan Schulz: Everyone knows where the Triangle Apartments are.
- 5:18Dan Schulz: Go over there, go in the parking lot and find them tonight and, uh, load up on some tacos.
- 5:23Dan Schulz: That message courtesy of La Tia Angelina food truck.
- 5:28Jennifer Davis: Okay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond.
- 5:37Jennifer Davis: Dan, I've got a really interesting one for you.
- 5:39Jennifer Davis: here is your question.
- 5:42Jennifer Davis: Before Microsoft moved to Redmond in the late 1980s, what was the land around the future campus mostly used for?
- 5:50Jennifer Davis: Was it A, a private airfield; B- Dairy farms and farmland, s- C, a horse racetrack, or D, a chicken farm.
- 6:04Jennifer Davis: And your time starts now.
- 6:07Dan Schulz: All right.
- 6:07Dan Schulz: I would assume that if it was a horse racing track, that would be big news.
- 6:15Jennifer Davis: What do you mean?
- 6:16Dan Schulz: People would be-- You know how all of these people are in Redmond, Jennifer, all these degenerative gamblers.
- 6:22Dan Schulz: Maybe that says more about me than them.
- 6:24Dan Schulz: Anyway, I just think that I would know if there was some kind of horse racing track in the area.
- 6:31Dan Schulz: I mean, we're talking about the '80s.
- 6:33Dan Schulz: That's not too long
- 6:34Jennifer Davis: It's not too long ago.
- 6:35Jennifer Davis: Not for us, at
- 6:36Dan Schulz: Oh, wait, it's like 40 years ago.
- 6:38Dan Schulz: Oh my God.
- 6:41Dan Schulz: Okay, a private airfield, dairy farms, and farmland.
- 6:45Dan Schulz: That's probably the answer.
- 6:47Dan Schulz: Horse racing track, chicken farm.
- 6:50Dan Schulz: It's not gonna be a chicken farm.
- 6:51Dan Schulz: I'm going with a private airfield, final answer.
- 6:55Jennifer Davis: All right, Dan.
- 6:56Jennifer Davis: Well, you are incorrect on this one and the streak is broken.
- 7:01Dan Schulz: Ah, horse racing track?
- 7:03Jennifer Davis: Mm, mm, mm.
- 7:04Jennifer Davis: The original Microsoft campus, which opened in 1986, was built on land previously used for chicken farms in the 1920s.
- 7:13Dan Schulz: That Bill Gates, he's quite a businessman, right He could have picked up any of the high-price real estate in the town.
- 7:19Dan Schulz: He goes and finds a, a chicken ranch.
- 7:22Jennifer Davis: Oh, hey, he did pretty good though.
- 7:24Jennifer Davis: The brothers Tito, Martino, Silvio, and Alfonso Morelli operated a massive 45-acre chicken ranch on the property starting in 1918.
- 7:35Dan Schulz: Holy cow, 1918.
- 7:38Jennifer Davis: Mm-hmm.
- 7:39Jennifer Davis: And now it's a bunch of, uh, Microsofty chickens running around there.
- 7:44Jennifer Davis: Just joking.
- 7:53Dan Schulz: This edition of rumor mill feels very believable for old Redmond.
- 7:58Dan Schulz: We've heard that a maker's kitchen concept could be in early talks for a spot downtown.
- 8:03Dan Schulz: Supposedly, the idea mixes cooking classes, private events, and ticketed supper club-style dinners all in one place.
- 8:12Dan Schulz: It's kind of the Portland-style food community vibe where half of the fun is just hanging out with strangers, eating something fancy at a long table.
- 8:20Dan Schulz: Now we don't know exactly where this is gonna go, who's behind it, all the normal stuff that we are always confused about.
- 8:26Dan Schulz: We don't even know if it's a real deal.
- 8:28Dan Schulz: At this stage it is truly a rumor, but honestly, could Redmond support something like that?
- 8:33Dan Schulz: I 100% think yes.
- 8:36Dan Schulz: We wanna hear from you though.
- 8:37Dan Schulz: If you've got a guess about who is behind it or maybe you've heard something, head on over to facebook.com/bestofredmond and drop it in the Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses post.
- 8:49Dan Schulz: Before we get out of here, we got a question.
- 8:51Dan Schulz: Normally we ask about businesses, but what do you think is the coolest hidden gem, special thing that just happens in Redmond?
- 8:59Dan Schulz: Go over to facebook.com slash bestofredmond, find the Your Picks post, and make sure you drop your guesses in that post.
- 9:06Dan Schulz: Also, a correction from the last episode and the last newsletter.
- 9:10Dan Schulz: For those of you who went out to the Redmond Town Center to look at the cool classic cars, it was canceled at the last minute due to rain.
- 9:17Dan Schulz: Sorry about that.
- 9:19Dan Schulz: That is one of the downfalls of living in the Pacific Northwest.
- 9:23Jennifer Davis: If you've enjoyed this podcast, you're gonna love the companion newsletter.
- 9:28Jennifer Davis: Find it at bestofredmond.com, and we'll see you in the next one.
- 9:33Dan Schulz: maybe before then, walking around Redmond.
