- 0:00Aloha. Friday morning in Hawaiʻi — humidity is peaking today, but a much nicer weekend is rolling in. I'm Mele with what's happening today.
- 1:53Expect warm, muggy conditions statewide. Scattered afternoon showers will pop up inland and over mountains, especially on the northwest-facing sides of each island. Morning winds are light, but moderate easterly winds will fill in by afternoon. The showers should clear tonight as it cools. Saturday and Sunday flip the script: humidity drops noticeably, winds stay light and steady, and daytime stays mostly clear. Leeward beaches — south and west coasts — are your best bet this morning before the afternoon showers arrive.
- 2:19Surf is moderate on Oʻahu's south shore at 4.1 feet — watch for shore break and rip currents at less protected beaches. North shore, Maui, and Kauaʻi are running smaller at 3 to 3.7 feet, comfortable for swimmers and snorkelers. The Big Island is glass-smooth at 1.4 feet if you want the calmest water.
- 2:34Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is under a volcano advisory — Kīlauea is being monitored for activity. Several trails are closed for maintenance: Kahuku Unit Roads, Kīpukapuaulu Trail, and the Lava Tube Bridge. If volcanic landscapes are on your list, check what's accessible before you go.
- 2:48Our new piece on airport lei greetings just went live. It walks you through how the tradition works at each island airport, what it costs, and which lei works best for different people. It's worth booking ahead — that moment when you step off the plane and someone drapes a lei around your neck stays with you.
- 3:04Saturday and Sunday stay settled with light winds and mostly clear skies. By midweek, stronger trade winds arrive and wetter weather returns to windward slopes — but right now, you're in the sweet spot.
