- 0:32Speaker 1: then you can never not hear it that way.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yes, it's like it's like listening to that song. Sir
- 0:36Speaker 2: shut dicy sat so shut.
- 0:45Speaker 3: They put on the interweb on like memes and stuff.
- 0:49Speaker 3: They give you fake lyrics, and it really sounds like
- 0:52Speaker 3: these people are saying that.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Bill Bill Lawrence arrived in the zoom call everybody Intergalactic,
- 1:00Speaker 1: kill the children, Kill the children.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I don't like that.
- 1:03Speaker 4: I don't like it either, But the Beastie Boys did.
- 1:06Speaker 2: It Donald, They did not do that.
- 1:08Speaker 4: I'm not one of the Beastie Boys.
- 1:10Speaker 3: But I'm a huge fan of the Beastie Boys, and
- 1:11Speaker 3: I refuse to believe that they killed children or that
- 1:14Speaker 3: they want you to kill children in an intergalactic planetary way.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Intergalactic kill the children, kill the children, and here's Lawrence.
- 1:23Speaker 5: Everybody, you guys watch the Beastie Boys documentary.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Not yet.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I really want to watch it, though it's on my
- 1:30Speaker 3: to do list. I'm stuck on the right now.
- 1:32Speaker 5: I'm watching you know who really likes The Beastie Boys
- 1:34Speaker 5: a lot? The Beastie Boys.
- 1:44Speaker 6: Documentary.
- 1:46Speaker 5: And then we did this great thing.
- 1:51Speaker 6: Bill.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I imagine you as a sports fan. You're watching the
- 1:54Speaker 1: the the that's the one.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I'm stuck on.
- 1:56Speaker 4: The Bulls.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Yes, oh my gosh. This but Bill, doesn't this remind
- 2:01Speaker 3: you of why you love Michael Jordan so much when
- 2:05Speaker 3: you were younger? Like, this makes me realize why he
- 2:07Speaker 3: was one of my idols growing up.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Even I had the poster.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Guys, I want you to know that I had a
- 2:12Speaker 1: poster of him in my room because I wanted to
- 2:14Speaker 1: be cool too. Every kid that age, our age at
- 2:18Speaker 1: that time had the Michael Jordan poster, And even though
- 2:20Speaker 1: I didn't watch any of it, I was like, well,
- 2:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna need one of those.
- 2:23Speaker 5: There is nothing funnier than you with a Michael Jordan poster.
- 2:27Speaker 1: It was right next to a Phantom of the opera
- 2:29Speaker 1: Beach Towel. My father bought me a Phantom of the
- 2:32Speaker 1: opera beach Towel, and you were supposed.
- 2:34Speaker 4: To use it at the beach. And I was like,
- 2:35Speaker 4: this is art. I will hang this on my wall.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And I took thumbtacks and hung it like a tapestry,
- 2:44Speaker 1: like like a really precious, rare tapestry. It was a
- 2:47Speaker 1: fan of the opera beach towel. And right next to
- 2:49Speaker 1: that was Michael Jordan dunking with his tongue out. So
- 2:52Speaker 1: there you go. I was in.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Should I start this voice memo?
- 2:55Speaker 2: Now?
- 2:56Speaker 5: Guys?
- 2:57Speaker 1: All right, well you should have.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Yeah, Zach forgot the the other day.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Oh I fucked up. I hear that.
- 3:06Speaker 5: I was the only one I haven't heard. I haven't
- 3:07Speaker 5: heard Judy Is yet because I fell asleep last night.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It's so good. Judy was a man.
- 3:11Speaker 2: She was great.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Wait, we forgot to sing, We forgot to sing Bill
- 3:15Speaker 1: save five, six, seven, eight.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Oh, I've always wanted to do this. Wait, is is
- 3:19Speaker 5: it going to be at the end or oh?
- 3:21Speaker 4: Yes, the audience wait in Bill.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Thousands of people did an online Twitter poll and decided
- 3:25Speaker 1: that the mm HM stays.
- 3:27Speaker 5: All right, well I'm gonna do oh yeah, because that's
- 3:29Speaker 5: what it is in my head five six, seven, eight.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Stories about show we made about a bunch of dogs
- 3:37Speaker 3: and nurses.
- 3:39Speaker 2: He said, he's the stories natural. So gada ra here,
- 3:47Speaker 2: YadA ra here.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Bill, you're the very first for the obvious reasons,
- 3:58Speaker 1: you're the very first asked we've invited back.
- 4:01Speaker 2: He's our recurring.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Yes, you're recurring, Bill.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Just just how you had the power to make characters
- 4:07Speaker 1: on Scrubs re reccurring. We bon Donald and I have
- 4:10Speaker 1: have the power to make you the creator of the
- 4:11Speaker 1: show recurring, and we've chosen you.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Oh I like that. It makes it makes me feel
- 4:16Speaker 5: like it's tenuous, like I could lose this at any second.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Yeah, but you can fuck up and be cut anytime,
- 4:23Speaker 4: you know what.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Speaking of reoccurring, Uh, it's it has a lot to
- 4:27Speaker 3: do with the episode.
- 4:28Speaker 2: But Yo, how where did you? Where did you find Rob?
- 4:32Speaker 2: How did that happen?
- 4:33Speaker 4: What's the Rob story?
- 4:34Speaker 1: Bill? Because we've had versions of this.
- 4:36Speaker 2: How did you find Rob? Who plays the Todd Everyone?
- 4:38Speaker 1: All my laugh out loud moments in this episode were Rob.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And I'm embarrassed to say that because they're the dumbest
- 4:43Speaker 1: fucking sex jokes. But every time I always write down
- 4:46Speaker 1: lo ol, just so I can mark when I actually
- 4:48Speaker 1: laughed out loud.
- 4:49Speaker 4: And they were all Robs.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Rob was an actor that got cast in a play
- 4:57Speaker 5: that I wrote, and so I got to know him,
- 5:00Speaker 5: and he was a stand up comic and his performance
- 5:04Speaker 5: was always better than his material because he was just,
- 5:06Speaker 5: you know, had crazy amounts of confidence and I just
- 5:09Speaker 5: got to be buddies with him, playing basketball and hanging out.
- 5:12Speaker 5: And my wife always says that I ruined his life
- 5:16Speaker 5: because Rob went to Columbia and I think he was
- 5:18Speaker 5: thinking about doing other things besides acting, And right then
- 5:24Speaker 5: I said, I'm doing the Scrubs pilot. You want to
- 5:26Speaker 5: be the jockey surgeon. He might have a line here
- 5:30Speaker 5: and there. I think the line had Rob had one
- 5:32Speaker 5: line in every episode for nine years.
- 5:37Speaker 1: And then.
- 5:39Speaker 5: You know, and after that, I think, you know, he
- 5:43Speaker 5: was a guy that had been doing it so long
- 5:45Speaker 5: it was too late to reinvent himself and to start
- 5:47Speaker 5: over as anything other than an actor. But this says
- 5:49Speaker 5: a very good ending because he's a hugely he's still
- 5:52Speaker 5: the Todd and he has a hugely successful real estate
- 5:55Speaker 5: business in Venice, California, and is killing it out there.
- 5:58Speaker 5: And he's still occasionally though, dyes his hair black, puts
- 6:01Speaker 5: the fake tattoo on, and goes to like European comic
- 6:04Speaker 5: cons as the Todd And he's got to pay people
- 6:08Speaker 5: pay him for high fives.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And he's got his cameo business, which you can get
- 6:11Speaker 1: him to cameo all your friends if you go.
- 6:13Speaker 3: And if I were hiring Rob to do a Todd appearance,
- 6:22Speaker 3: he'd have to be in the banana hammock like I'd be,
- 6:24Speaker 3: and you have.
- 6:25Speaker 4: To probably costs extra.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Donald. That probably costs extra.
- 6:27Speaker 5: I would probably cost ever extra.
- 6:29Speaker 7: And now he probably needs about a six month lead
- 6:31Speaker 7: time on.
- 6:32Speaker 5: That to start starving himself.
- 6:38Speaker 1: By the way, if you need a real estate, if
- 6:40Speaker 1: you need a real estate broker in southern California, especially
- 6:43Speaker 1: down at the beach, hire Rob Mashio, because I'm sure
- 6:46Speaker 1: he'd be willing to give you a high five while
- 6:48Speaker 1: he shows you places. In Venice.
- 6:49Speaker 5: There is, without a doubt way to buy a house
- 6:52Speaker 5: from me high five out there for someone.
- 6:55Speaker 1: You could buy a house and get a high five
- 6:57Speaker 1: from Robin, surell throw it in with the yeah, I.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Don't even think you have to pay extra for that.
- 7:03Speaker 5: But he couldn't be. It couldn't be a nicer guy.
- 7:06Speaker 5: Loved the show. I used to love how passionate he
- 7:09Speaker 5: was about it. And you guys made the joke because
- 7:11Speaker 5: he would have one line and he would be running
- 7:13Speaker 5: it over and over. And it's still one of my
- 7:16Speaker 5: favorite jokes. Rob's over there running line.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Running singular. He would take it.
- 7:21Speaker 1: He would take it so seriously, and we were laughing
- 7:23Speaker 1: with him because he would laugh at it with us.
- 7:25Speaker 1: But he would be like over there in the corner
- 7:26Speaker 1: being like high five, high five, fine.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Working it out, but I mean, come on, always delivered.
- 7:36Speaker 1: He's so fucking funny man. It's it's always the same joke.
- 7:38Speaker 1: But that's another testament to Rob. It's like, it's always
- 7:41Speaker 1: an innuendo joke. It's the same joke, and it's always
- 7:45Speaker 1: in a sexual innuendo joke. But I but a testament
- 7:47Speaker 1: to you and him. I laugh every fucking time.
- 7:54Speaker 5: You by the way, you you just nailed. I believe
- 7:57Speaker 5: it might be you know, old war in history, But
- 8:01Speaker 5: my favorite Todd joke I think came from a one
- 8:05Speaker 5: a month. I think it was Neil Goldman and I
- 8:07Speaker 5: hate giving him a name check because he wants them
- 8:09Speaker 5: so bad.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I know. I saw Neil Goman wrote on Twitter. He's like,
- 8:13Speaker 1: there's been six episodes. I've been mentioned once.
- 8:16Speaker 7: I don't know, but the I think it was. I
- 8:18Speaker 7: think it was him.
- 8:19Speaker 5: I think someone of the writer's room said, is every
- 8:21Speaker 5: time the Todd talks just going to be sexual innuendo?
- 8:24Speaker 5: And I think he's the one that said in your end,
- 8:28Speaker 5: in your.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Endo, he has the best line. He has the best
- 8:33Speaker 3: line in this episode. It made me laugh so hard
- 8:35Speaker 3: when he says it's one of my l O l's bet.
- 8:38Speaker 2: I bet you it is. When he goes, you know
- 8:40Speaker 2: what else? You know what else?
- 8:47Speaker 5: Remember, I think it's I'm not sure, Todd, but I'm
- 8:49Speaker 5: gonna guess it's your penis.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Yeah, Todd, I'm not sure, but I'm gonna guess it's
- 8:58Speaker 1: your penis.
- 9:01Speaker 4: And it was now Bill Bill in your mind? Is
- 9:05Speaker 4: he a good surgeon? Yeah?
- 9:07Speaker 8: I don't know if you remember, if you guys have
- 9:09Speaker 8: gotten there yet, no, we're only on this one ten.
- 9:11Speaker 8: One of my favorite moments that the writer's room all
- 9:15Speaker 8: loved was because we had read something about how surgeons
- 9:20Speaker 8: are just cutters. You know, medical guys call them hammers
- 9:23Speaker 8: and the patient and nail, and if they get too
- 9:26Speaker 8: caught up in their head, they sometimes aren't as good.
- 9:29Speaker 5: And that gave us the idea for Turk's character. Asked
- 9:32Speaker 5: doctor when who the best surgeon is, thinking it would
- 9:35Speaker 5: be that young girl Bonnie or whatever her name is,
- 9:39Speaker 5: and doctor Wenn says, you really want to know who
- 9:40Speaker 5: it is, and he points at the Todd and you say,
- 9:44Speaker 5: no way. And then doctor Wenn says, you're all caught
- 9:48Speaker 5: up in your brain thinking about all these problems. You
- 9:50Speaker 5: know what Todd's doing, and they cut to Todd and surgery.
- 9:53Speaker 5: We actually paid for the Bonanza theme because he's just
- 9:57Speaker 5: he's just looking at all his instruments. He's going tiny Scalpel.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Was like, it's he's still present in the moment because
- 10:12Speaker 1: his mind isn't getting distracted. He's just like, yeah, he's.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Got nothing to distract it. It's like somebody. It's like,
- 10:17Speaker 5: it's like how somebody that's not that bright could be
- 10:19Speaker 5: great at the video game. That's Todd.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Let's talk about Bonnie because we mentioned it earlier that
- 10:27Speaker 3: she was supposed to be my nemesis at one point
- 10:30Speaker 3: right like that was supposed to.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Yeah, we we she got another gig.
- 10:33Speaker 2: She was good.
- 10:34Speaker 5: She would have stayed around the same way Doug did,
- 10:36Speaker 5: in the same way other you know, JD. Had Doug
- 10:39Speaker 5: on the medical side, she would have been the person
- 10:41Speaker 5: that stayed around on the surgical side. But she got
- 10:43Speaker 5: another gig.
- 10:45Speaker 6: You know.
- 10:45Speaker 5: That's why we we sent her off on that trip
- 10:49Speaker 5: and came up with that story only because we knew
- 10:51Speaker 5: she was not going to be around to work for
- 10:54Speaker 5: a while.
- 10:55Speaker 3: That's always tough, man, that has to be difficult. Like
- 10:58Speaker 3: when we talk about the people that have him through
- 11:00Speaker 3: the show, and you know, like A. Z's and all
- 11:03Speaker 3: of these other people, it's like, you know, if they
- 11:06Speaker 3: weren't bubbling and doing their thing at the time, they
- 11:09Speaker 3: would have been staples on the show for years, to doubt.
- 11:12Speaker 5: Man, even Charles Chung disappeared for a second because he
- 11:16Speaker 5: got some pilot or movie and stuff. And we loved
- 11:18Speaker 5: having that dude around. He's just a really kind of
- 11:21Speaker 5: you know meet and Potato's good actor, you know, and uhu.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And he was a good straight man too for Donald
- 11:26Speaker 1: because he was just so good at deadpan, you know,
- 11:28Speaker 1: and Donald could be like wacky Turk and he was
- 11:31Speaker 1: just perfect like we had.
- 11:34Speaker 5: You can keep listening him. Remember, Neil and Garrett called
- 11:36Speaker 5: them our weapons chest, and those were one line characters
- 11:41Speaker 5: that we thought were so very funny that not just
- 11:45Speaker 5: Ted the lawyer and Aloma, you know, Nurse Roberts, but
- 11:48Speaker 5: like doctor Zeltzer, you know.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And Bob, yeah, way, Bob Clennen, who's yet to make
- 11:56Speaker 1: an appearance. I don't know if he arrives in season
- 11:58Speaker 1: one or not, but you introduced me to Bob Clint
- 12:01Speaker 1: Dennon on the show and he played Zeltzer, and I
- 12:03Speaker 1: just thought that is one of the funniest character actors
- 12:06Speaker 1: I've ever met. I've put him in, I put him
- 12:08Speaker 1: in a bunch of stuff since because I just love
- 12:10Speaker 1: that guy.
- 12:10Speaker 5: He's uh, he's amazing, you know him and Sam Lloyd
- 12:14Speaker 5: and uh, Krista and Aloma. I mean, they could all
- 12:18Speaker 5: be regulars on any show.
- 12:20Speaker 2: And so it was.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Though of like you'd have like your guest star level,
- 12:28Speaker 1: like Krista, and then you'd have like the Aloma level
- 12:31Speaker 1: who were like and then you'd have people used to
- 12:32Speaker 1: call your assassins who would just come by once in
- 12:35Speaker 1: a while and they do like a drive by one
- 12:36Speaker 1: liner and just kill it like and and Bob Clintennon
- 12:40Speaker 1: was one of those. He was as REGOs will there
- 12:43Speaker 1: will there be prostitutes.
- 12:47Speaker 5: He would just be my favorite part of that joke.
- 12:49Speaker 5: You love that. My favorite was doctor Cox going no
- 12:52Speaker 5: and Bob's readA poe good.
- 12:59Speaker 1: No, oh good good.
- 13:06Speaker 5: He was not worried about it at all. He was hopeful.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Hey, Bill, I thought we could start off since we
- 13:10Speaker 1: have you, and I was thinking today because I did,
- 13:13Speaker 1: because you're here, and I put on a nice shirt.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I was telling him before you got on that because
- 13:16Speaker 1: we had you, I put on a nice shirt. And
- 13:18Speaker 1: I actually did a lot of preparation for this episode.
- 13:21Speaker 5: I'll watched it last night too. I'm ready.
- 13:23Speaker 4: It's very very good.
- 13:24Speaker 2: First, it was such a great episode.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Dude, Judy fucking Raly, we gotta do you guys got
- 13:30Speaker 1: to carry one torch for me beforehand.
- 13:32Speaker 5: The only thing that really bummed me out about this
- 13:34Speaker 5: episode and all my experiences is when I catch up
- 13:36Speaker 5: with you guys, unless I want to pop a DVD
- 13:39Speaker 5: and I watch on Hulu. And the song that Christa
- 13:42Speaker 5: picked at the end of this episode was so good,
- 13:45Speaker 5: and it was it's not you know, the original music
- 13:47Speaker 5: is not on these episodes and streaming and it bums
- 13:50Speaker 5: me out and.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I heard you. We keep telling the audience that, And
- 13:53Speaker 1: just to reiterate if you're just hearing this, not that
- 13:56Speaker 1: we don't love Hulu, but we do love whoo. But
- 13:59Speaker 1: we love you Hulu. But because of streaming rights and
- 14:02Speaker 1: contracts and such, you're not gonna get all of the
- 14:05Speaker 1: original songs that that Bill and Christa and others placed it, Zach.
- 14:10Speaker 5: And the ending song of this in the rain was
- 14:14Speaker 5: a song by a band called Sebadoh, and it was
- 14:16Speaker 5: so good and so poignant in the real production of it.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Speaking of music, we used it so much.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Here that's in this episode right, definitely in.
- 14:27Speaker 3: This episode, and it's kind of new in the scrubs.
- 14:31Speaker 3: It's like the second time we've used it.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. But when it
- 14:35Speaker 2: came on, it pissed me off so much. It was like, oh,
- 14:37Speaker 2: you ruined it with the what's funny.
- 14:39Speaker 1: What's funny is like back when they back when they
- 14:41Speaker 1: introduced that sad c this was like, you know, this
- 14:44Speaker 1: was like, you know, a tenth episode of season one,
- 14:46Speaker 1: it was genuinely like sweet and heartfelt. Now that we
- 14:49Speaker 1: did nine seasons and then started to make fun of it,
- 14:51Speaker 1: now when it's like in a point you moment.
- 14:53Speaker 4: You're like, oh, not that fucking sad. This is the
- 14:59Speaker 4: same time.
- 15:00Speaker 3: This is the second time, this is the second time.
- 15:03Speaker 3: I remember when it finally caught my attention, I was like,
- 15:06Speaker 3: how come it fucking keeps going? Because at first I
- 15:09Speaker 3: was like, oh, such a beautiful moment for so long,
- 15:12Speaker 3: for so long, and then somebody was like, dude, the
- 15:15Speaker 3: sad song, We gotta figure that out.
- 15:17Speaker 2: I think it was you Bill that said that it's gotta.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Go all in our head. All those cues were the
- 15:23Speaker 5: stuff that's happening in Zach's head, Zach's character's head while
- 15:26Speaker 5: he's roomming around, you know.
- 15:28Speaker 1: So then you ended up doing a moment where in
- 15:31Speaker 1: one of the episodes where I actually referenced the cue, well.
- 15:34Speaker 5: You say, what do you mean now? Is when you
- 15:36Speaker 5: say something poignant it makes me think about it, And
- 15:37Speaker 5: then the sad music plays.
- 15:40Speaker 4: And then you hear me, you hear me in the
- 15:42Speaker 4: voiceover go.
- 15:46Speaker 1: And then I think, and then and then you geniusly
- 15:49Speaker 1: fucking then use the queue out of that scene. Now
- 15:51Speaker 1: it's so fun.
- 15:54Speaker 5: Yeah, he walks away and says you're an idiot, and
- 15:56Speaker 5: it goes. The real cue goes, but ma uh and
- 16:00Speaker 5: then then you lip sync the last one you.
- 16:09Speaker 4: I thought that.
- 16:10Speaker 5: I think that guy's name is Jan Stevens, and I
- 16:12Speaker 5: think he won a bunch of score awards for our show.
- 16:15Speaker 2: I don't think he was happy when you were like,
- 16:17Speaker 2: I don't like the anymore.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I want to hold He understood, he got it.
- 16:21Speaker 5: That guy got it.
- 16:22Speaker 1: He that he got to write, by the way, just
- 16:25Speaker 1: right hard, very hard assignment, just like you guys.
- 16:28Speaker 5: Are joking about yourself, as with anybody that was a
- 16:31Speaker 5: dude that worked his butt off, Oh my god here
- 16:36Speaker 5: for years and then when you get later in it,
- 16:39Speaker 5: you'd be like, hey, we need a queue four, and
- 16:41Speaker 5: your inbox will go how about this one? Just be
- 16:44Speaker 5: literally he was like one hand on his keyboard when
- 16:47Speaker 5: you said I need a que just going bomb bomb
- 16:49Speaker 5: bum bum bum. There you go done, I'm gonna head
- 16:52Speaker 5: out to the park.
- 16:53Speaker 1: What's funny was that? There? You know, when there's these
- 16:54Speaker 1: things called stings, which are really quick little moments. They're
- 16:57Speaker 1: all over scrubs and and uh, and funny one. Yeah.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Jan would write one like hey, we need some stings
- 17:03Speaker 1: for the end of the scene, and you get one
- 17:04Speaker 1: to be like bow and you're like boom. But we'd
- 17:09Speaker 1: use them. It was like big scrub scene and bow.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I thought, I thought, because we have you here and
- 17:19Speaker 1: and and we're really we're really not We're not only
- 17:22Speaker 1: entertaining the audience, but we want to provide a service
- 17:25Speaker 1: so that you could explain a little bit about what
- 17:27Speaker 1: a showrunner does. Because I was thinking as we were
- 17:29Speaker 1: having you on today that I honestly think I've done
- 17:32Speaker 1: a bunch of different jobs in my career. I think
- 17:34Speaker 1: a showrunner is the hardest job there is. And it's
- 17:39Speaker 1: dovetails with this episode because this is about taking on
- 17:42Speaker 1: too much workload and being stressed and being overwhelmed, particularly
- 17:46Speaker 1: for the character of Joe Tracy and Sarah Chalk. And
- 17:49Speaker 1: I just I thought you could explain to people that
- 17:51Speaker 1: aren't in the business, uh, what a show what a
- 17:53Speaker 1: showrunner is, what a show runner does, and why it's
- 17:55Speaker 1: such a fucking impossibly hard job.
- 17:57Speaker 5: Well, so it was here, what's interesting, man, Hollywood. The
- 18:00Speaker 5: first thing that you know, even when you're a kid,
- 18:02Speaker 5: if you like movies and TV and stuff like that,
- 18:04Speaker 5: is that you know that feature films are a director's industry.
- 18:09Speaker 5: We have all gone like, oh, it's a Martin Scorsese movie,
- 18:11Speaker 5: it's a Steven Spielberg movie, no matter who wrote it,
- 18:14Speaker 5: you know, and the directors get to do it. They
- 18:16Speaker 5: want the script and they cast it, and they argue
- 18:18Speaker 5: for final cut. And what's really interesting is in TV,
- 18:22Speaker 5: directors come and go week to week, and so the
- 18:26Speaker 5: person that creates the show, the head writer, often becomes
- 18:29Speaker 5: an event of the term for it, the showrunner. And
- 18:32Speaker 5: it's why I think, and I'm not being self aggrandizing,
- 18:34Speaker 5: I'm talking about other people, not myself, some of the
- 18:36Speaker 5: best writers in entertainment stay in television because in WEST
- 18:41Speaker 5: you're the movie director. In movies you're like, hey, you
- 18:44Speaker 5: give us the script and then we'll do whatever we
- 18:47Speaker 5: want to it. And in TV they go, all right,
- 18:49Speaker 5: if we decide to do your TV show, you get
- 18:53Speaker 5: to cast it, you get to write it, you get
- 18:58Speaker 5: final cut, the music. You're in charge of the director,
- 19:03Speaker 5: so that you can come down and say, no, I
- 19:05Speaker 5: don't like the way this scene is blocked. It's gonna
- 19:07Speaker 5: be funnier if you do it this way and you
- 19:09Speaker 5: get to run the whole shebang, right, And so that's
- 19:13Speaker 5: really appealing. The danger of the job is since they said, essentially,
- 19:17Speaker 5: if you're the showrunner, you can do everything. The people
- 19:20Speaker 5: whose brains explode are the ones that go, all right,
- 19:24Speaker 5: I'm gonna do all those things, but I'm also going
- 19:26Speaker 5: to do wardrobe, and I'm also going to stand on
- 19:29Speaker 5: set and make sure no one changes and to also
- 19:32Speaker 5: and I'm also going to do props, and I'm gonna
- 19:36Speaker 5: do you know. And those are the people that sometimes
- 19:40Speaker 5: they melt. Sometimes they're viewed as kind of tyrants, you know,
- 19:45Speaker 5: Like you know, Aaron Sorkin, I think would be one
- 19:48Speaker 5: of the first people to tell you that he's hard
- 19:50Speaker 5: to work with and for because you know, every last
- 19:52Speaker 5: detail you know drives him banana pants and the job.
- 19:57Speaker 5: The hard part of the job become whether or not
- 20:01Speaker 5: you can go of control and seed some things to
- 20:04Speaker 5: talented people. And I was lucky enough that we had
- 20:07Speaker 5: so many talented people there, like Carrie Bennett, the head
- 20:09Speaker 5: of wardrobe. She's done a lot of shows for me
- 20:11Speaker 5: after that. If I was somebody that needed to look
- 20:15Speaker 5: at every T shirt, every outfit, I think I would
- 20:17Speaker 5: have you not made it, that would have burnt out quicker.
- 20:20Speaker 5: But I was lucky and said, hey, you do this,
- 20:22Speaker 5: and I'll only say a word if I think it's wrong,
- 20:24Speaker 5: And then I never had to say anything, so to me, yes,
- 20:27Speaker 5: that's what the gig is great. It forces you to
- 20:31Speaker 5: pick the things that you prioritize the most personally and
- 20:34Speaker 5: not get lost in the things you don't care about
- 20:36Speaker 5: and the people that drown. Try to do everything.
- 20:39Speaker 1: But even in not micromanaging Bill, in a typical hour,
- 20:42Speaker 1: you are leading a writer's room, then being called to
- 20:45Speaker 1: set to watch a rehearsal for the scene being shot,
- 20:49Speaker 1: then needing to go to editorial to look at a
- 20:51Speaker 1: cut that has to go out to the network.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Doing rewrites if jokes don't work right.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I mean, I just remember watching you and thinking, God,
- 21:00Speaker 1: I mean, and it takes a person who can multitask
- 21:03Speaker 1: without going fucking nuts, because it's just a lot of pressure.
- 21:05Speaker 5: The herd, believe it or not. The hardest part for me,
- 21:08Speaker 5: and I had a little of it with YouTube, but
- 21:10Speaker 5: more with the writers is you also become, if not
- 21:14Speaker 5: a big brother, you know, a parent and a psychiatrist
- 21:18Speaker 5: to people and The joke was, you know, a lot
- 21:20Speaker 5: of the writers stayed for five, six, seven, even eight years.
- 21:23Speaker 2: On Scrubs, which is unheard of. I didn't know it
- 21:27Speaker 2: was a good gig. Yeah, I didn't know.
- 21:28Speaker 5: You take off, but if you're on a hit show,
- 21:30Speaker 5: you stay and your salary goes up every year. And
- 21:34Speaker 5: the joke was that by the end, every single writer
- 21:37Speaker 5: had been in my office emotional, crying about something, you
- 21:42Speaker 5: know what I mean. And Zach and Donald, you guys
- 21:44Speaker 5: can't see them, they're laughing because I think they both
- 21:46Speaker 5: inherently know that I'm the last person on earth that
- 21:49Speaker 5: wants somebody to be in his office.
- 21:52Speaker 4: We turned you into a hugger, Bill Bilt, Donald and I.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I remember when you didn't hoddle then Donald, dude, Donald
- 21:58Speaker 1: and I broke you down.
- 21:58Speaker 2: You were finally like, yo, dude, come on, let's hug
- 22:01Speaker 2: and I was.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Like, yeah, Donald and I broke him down. He was
- 22:05Speaker 1: not a hugger. He was a very waspy Connecticut guy.
- 22:08Speaker 6: Oh.
- 22:09Speaker 5: They used to always make fun of He think, come
- 22:10Speaker 5: in with some emotional thing of work or life or whatever,
- 22:13Speaker 5: and I would subconsciously, with all the things on my desk,
- 22:16Speaker 5: build a wall between the two that almost nuts. What's
- 22:20Speaker 5: going on with you and your uh and your your boyfriend?
- 22:26Speaker 1: Yeah, do that?
- 22:27Speaker 4: And you had to do that with with everyone.
- 22:28Speaker 1: And also I think you know, you started on Spin
- 22:31Speaker 1: City where you were you were young, and you had,
- 22:34Speaker 1: you know, a legend like Michael J. Fox to to
- 22:36Speaker 1: work with and to make sure he was happy. And
- 22:39Speaker 1: then when when Scrubs came on, we were all unknown.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Did you feel a little bit of uh an onus
- 22:44Speaker 1: to keep everyone's egos in check? I mean I would,
- 22:47Speaker 1: I would think that.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I really wanted to keep people's egos in check
- 22:51Speaker 5: because in between, you know, I had seen, you know,
- 22:54Speaker 5: how hard it is when certain things hit you. You know,
- 22:57Speaker 5: I was on the first year of Friends, and I
- 22:58Speaker 5: actually empathized with that actors and actresses because watching how
- 23:02Speaker 5: you know that group of the air kids, how their
- 23:04Speaker 5: lives all change so fast, sometimes to the better, and
- 23:08Speaker 5: you know, you guys know this burden nothing to complain about,
- 23:10Speaker 5: but sometimes in complicated ways. So yeah, it was it
- 23:13Speaker 5: was really important to me to have a good culture
- 23:16Speaker 5: at work, to keep everybody's egos from blowing up. And
- 23:21Speaker 5: I'm not you know, I don't uh to equate it
- 23:25Speaker 5: to sports because we were talking about the Michael Jordan thing.
- 23:27Speaker 5: No I'm not Michael Jordan, but to be a leader
- 23:30Speaker 5: for a group of people that they at least knew
- 23:31Speaker 5: there were levels of respect you had to have for
- 23:34Speaker 5: each other and ways you're supposed to behave and that
- 23:36Speaker 5: somebody would watch your back.
- 23:38Speaker 4: You know, you might not be a Michael Jordan, but
- 23:39Speaker 4: I think of you like a Mike Kaminsky.
- 23:43Speaker 7: Donald and I are basketball guys. It's such an insult man.
- 23:46Speaker 2: That is the problem is is that that's the only
- 23:49Speaker 2: basketball guy he knows.
- 23:51Speaker 5: No.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Listen, when my father of a certain age, my father
- 23:54Speaker 1: would drag me to the New Jersey Nets games and
- 23:57Speaker 1: so I only know whatever year that was, that team,
- 24:00Speaker 1: Darryl Dawkins, Mike Jaminsky, otis Bird's song. So whenever I
- 24:04Speaker 1: have to make a basketball reference, I'm still like, oh,
- 24:06Speaker 1: you mean, like otis Bird's song?
- 24:09Speaker 6: Do you know?
- 24:09Speaker 7: Do you know Darryl Dawkins uh nickname?
- 24:13Speaker 1: Yeah? It does. Wait, he doesn't top the thunder thunder
- 24:18Speaker 1: and backwards.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Yes, And you know why I care because there was
- 24:22Speaker 5: a pitch that we were really trying to do. I
- 24:25Speaker 5: don't don't know why we got bogged down in it,
- 24:27Speaker 5: but it lived for the better part of two years.
- 24:30Speaker 5: That everybody wanted Darryl Dawkins to be nurse Robert sex husband.
- 24:34Speaker 2: That would have been awesome.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Oh man, God rest his soul, but that would have
- 24:38Speaker 3: been awesome if he was on the show.
- 24:40Speaker 2: That would have been the best day that would have been.
- 24:42Speaker 2: That would have been a highlight for me. Oh my.
- 24:44Speaker 5: It was so like, it sucks because it breaks. It
- 24:46Speaker 5: sounds like it breaks down on male female dynamics because
- 24:49Speaker 5: there's a lot of guy sports fans in there. But
- 24:51Speaker 5: it was one of those things that a lot of
- 24:53Speaker 5: the great female writers on that show were like, I
- 24:56Speaker 5: don't understand. Why do you want this former seven foot
- 25:00Speaker 5: tall NBA that would have been perfect that they called
- 25:03Speaker 5: Chocolate Thunder to be your exit.
- 25:04Speaker 7: He's not even an actor, right, He's not an actor?
- 25:09Speaker 5: Is no? He breaks he breaks backboards?
- 25:12Speaker 1: Why was?
- 25:12Speaker 4: Why am I right with the trivia that he was
- 25:15Speaker 4: famous for breaking backwards?
- 25:16Speaker 1: And why was why did he do that? And how
- 25:18Speaker 1: could he do that?
- 25:19Speaker 5: He didn't do it in person. He used to the Thunder.
- 25:21Speaker 5: He used to dunk so hard that occasionally when he
- 25:23Speaker 5: would dunk, even just with a rubber basketball. He would
- 25:27Speaker 5: leather basketball. It would shatter the backboard.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he was the first one. Yeah, he would
- 25:32Speaker 2: do it in games.
- 25:34Speaker 7: It wouldn't would go nuts. They'd have to sweep it
- 25:37Speaker 7: up and put a new one up.
- 25:38Speaker 3: It was really crazy because when Shaq broke the backboard,
- 25:41Speaker 3: he just made the backboard fall to the ground, you
- 25:43Speaker 3: know what I mean, Like the whole thing came down
- 25:45Speaker 3: chocolate thunder.
- 25:46Speaker 2: When he hit the rim, that thing exploded like the
- 25:49Speaker 2: death Star. Dude. It was like wow.
- 25:52Speaker 3: It was such a his he has like two or
- 25:54Speaker 3: three of them, I think two, but they were so
- 25:57Speaker 3: thunderous and monstrous.
- 25:58Speaker 6: Man.
- 25:59Speaker 2: And when he did it was so hard.
- 26:01Speaker 3: And this was you know, basketball is a finesse game,
- 26:04Speaker 3: and you know it's a it's a it's a game
- 26:06Speaker 3: of you know where athletes they run real hard and
- 26:08Speaker 3: then they go at this little cup and it's so like,
- 26:11Speaker 3: you know, graceful and everything like that. There was no
- 26:14Speaker 3: grace in the way he slammed a basketball, you know
- 26:16Speaker 3: what I mean. It was like wow, you know what
- 26:19Speaker 3: I said, You.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Know what I mean? I heard it.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Yes, drink wow, drink.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Up, Bill, Bill Bill. The fans have started a drinking
- 26:26Speaker 1: game because Donald says, you know what I mean so
- 26:28Speaker 1: much that they're drinking every time he says you know
- 26:30Speaker 1: what I mean, I.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Would force people by the way. I want to say
- 26:33Speaker 5: two things.
- 26:34Speaker 6: One to that.
- 26:34Speaker 5: One of the things, you guys can see the connection
- 26:37Speaker 5: to how much fun it would have been for JD
- 26:40Speaker 5: to want to call Turk, as one of his many nicknames,
- 26:43Speaker 5: Chocolate Thunder. And then Nurse Roberts doesn't like it. And
- 26:47Speaker 5: then you guys don't know why she doesn't like it,
- 26:50Speaker 5: and it's because the man that left her is Chocolate
- 26:54Speaker 5: thunderbirl Dons.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Oh my god, it must have been so late in
- 26:59Speaker 1: the night in writer's room when you guys are wrestling
- 27:01Speaker 1: with that just hours.
- 27:05Speaker 5: How do we reach by the way? And by the way,
- 27:07Speaker 5: I'm sure he was a lovely man, but there's no
- 27:09Speaker 5: doubt in my mind while he's alive, if he had
- 27:12Speaker 5: showed up, first of all, if he had gotten that call,
- 27:14Speaker 5: he'd been like, they want me to do what beyond skill?
- 27:16Speaker 7: Because I don't think I ever saw him like on
- 27:18Speaker 7: a love boat or on any shows.
- 27:20Speaker 5: They want me to. They want me to come out
- 27:22Speaker 5: of retirement to do something I've never done. Before and
- 27:24Speaker 5: play a nurse's husband.
- 27:26Speaker 4: All right, you break it backboard or something.
- 27:30Speaker 5: I think people should also drink at any time, Zach,
- 27:33Speaker 5: And I've only heard it three or four times that
- 27:36Speaker 5: you say one of the things that you would always
- 27:40Speaker 5: say to sum up the show and the voiceovers at
- 27:42Speaker 5: the end, because it's become part of our lexicon, and
- 27:45Speaker 5: one of them I heard you going at the end
- 27:47Speaker 5: of the day. It was so funny to me because
- 27:50Speaker 5: you're talking about scrubs in an episode that if you
- 27:52Speaker 5: listen to it goes at the end of the day
- 27:54Speaker 5: all you can really hope, and then you go at
- 27:56Speaker 5: the end of the day, what we so any any
- 28:00Speaker 5: any scrubs at the end of the day type things?
- 28:02Speaker 1: Okay, and I also had another drinking game idea for people.
- 28:05Speaker 1: You're gonna get shit faced listening to this podcast.
- 28:06Speaker 4: But I got really.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Excited in this episode when I when I had a
- 28:10Speaker 1: Snoop Dogg intern sighting, and I thought it might be
- 28:12Speaker 1: fun for fans to also do a shot every time
- 28:14Speaker 1: you see Snoop Dogg intern resident attending.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Well, it should start with Snoop Dogg, but then once
- 28:20Speaker 3: you know, Mickhead shows up and and and be doctor doctor.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Oh Man Man, Colonel Doctor passed away, didn't he?
- 28:32Speaker 5: Colonel doctor? Just so what he knows is called Colonel
- 28:34Speaker 5: Doctor because he looks like the colonel from Kentucky Fried Chicken.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:39Speaker 5: And my favorite thing about that, that's why you think
- 28:42Speaker 5: he's I mean, it's funny that that's his nickname, Colonel Doctor.
- 28:45Speaker 5: And his name turns out to be Coleman Slowski, which
- 28:48Speaker 5: is cole Slaw.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Oh my god, here's what I like.
- 28:56Speaker 5: My favorite thing that you guys all liked that Zach
- 28:59Speaker 5: is the first one kind of that he noticed was
- 29:01Speaker 5: he had all these great background performers, and we wanted
- 29:04Speaker 5: the consistency of recognizing nurses and doctors, and so he
- 29:07Speaker 5: tried to have the same people come back and then
- 29:09Speaker 5: because they were around, whether it was Coleman Slavsky, doctor
- 29:13Speaker 5: Mickhead who ultimately I think murdered his spouse and gave me.
- 29:17Speaker 2: On the show, Yes, and Colonel Doctor, and Snoop dogg
- 29:23Speaker 2: Beard fac and.
- 29:25Speaker 5: The world's oldest intern Gloria, I think it's really But
- 29:31Speaker 5: the point is that even amongst the background people, they
- 29:34Speaker 5: became tears like a call sheet. And I started noticing
- 29:37Speaker 5: that I'd come into like the background holding area, and
- 29:40Speaker 5: there'd be all the background and then there'd be the
- 29:42Speaker 5: king shit background of those four doing the equivalent of
- 29:45Speaker 5: like drinking martinis as the ones that had been the
- 29:49Speaker 5: ones that have names to sit around going like we're
- 29:51Speaker 5: fucking we're ruling this world.
- 29:53Speaker 2: And I loved it that.
- 29:55Speaker 3: What was really cool was when you would trust them
- 29:57Speaker 3: with lines and stuff like that and they would deliver.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Like I remember, Mickhead had so many lines and you
- 30:03Speaker 3: gave him a storyline and everything, and it was because
- 30:06Speaker 3: you were like, yo, he delivers every time I give
- 30:08Speaker 3: him something.
- 30:08Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, A lot of were actors. They just
- 30:12Speaker 1: hadn't had a break yet. And you know, like like
- 30:15Speaker 1: any group of actors, some could act and some couldn't.
- 30:17Speaker 1: But I think Mickhead was one that was actually really good.
- 30:21Speaker 5: His backstory was Frank's backstory was a fascinating He was
- 30:23Speaker 5: a paid screenwriter that none of his even though he'd
- 30:27Speaker 5: sold a bunch of movies, none of them ever got made.
- 30:29Speaker 5: And you eventually reached the end of that career and
- 30:30Speaker 5: he was still plugging away writing and came by to
- 30:34Speaker 5: make dough and then when he was doing it, he
- 30:36Speaker 5: at least had a knowledge of film enough you know that.
- 30:38Speaker 5: He was good and subtle and he's like, what are
- 30:40Speaker 5: you making me into an actor for? This is not
- 30:42Speaker 5: my plan.
- 30:42Speaker 1: It was really fun well and mainly Henry delivered one
- 30:45Speaker 1: of the greatest lines in Scrubs history, where mahoes at,
- 30:51Speaker 1: I haven't seen them.
- 30:52Speaker 2: I haven't seen you know. I played golf with Mickhead
- 30:54Speaker 2: quite a bit. We played.
- 30:55Speaker 3: That's one of my golf buddies. And he still writes books.
- 30:58Speaker 3: He's a novelist, you know, he writes with his with
- 31:01Speaker 3: his wife.
- 31:01Speaker 2: And it's stay high for me.
- 31:03Speaker 6: Man.
- 31:03Speaker 5: He was a nice man.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I definitely will. Let's take a break.
- 31:06Speaker 1: We'll be right back after these fine words. Okay, so
- 31:16Speaker 1: we're back. Yeah, yeah, No, Bill, it's no, and we
- 31:21Speaker 1: don't do the full song at the commercial breaks.
- 31:23Speaker 5: Bill does the song start? Whenever I say five to
- 31:26Speaker 5: six seven eight, it's unfortunately.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Dan's got his finger on the trigger. And whenever you
- 31:31Speaker 1: say five hits, please.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Don't say five six.
- 31:33Speaker 4: Stop saying five to six eight.
- 31:38Speaker 5: That's my favorite. He should Dan should just be contractually
- 31:40Speaker 5: obligated to do it. Whenever he hears that.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Yeah, whenever Dan, we started, he started it Dan, I
- 31:48Speaker 1: have the power stick.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Got it?
- 31:53Speaker 1: All right? Donald, you were going to start us off.
- 31:55Speaker 1: We're forty minutes and we should probably talk about the
- 31:57Speaker 1: TV show.
- 31:57Speaker 3: Okay, So first of all, Uh, Whiney Dancer was pretty good.
- 32:02Speaker 3: I'm gonna put that out there. I thought that was
- 32:04Speaker 3: a very funny nickname. Yes, I laughed very hard at that,
- 32:07Speaker 3: and I was mad that it didn't stick. But Scooter
- 32:09Speaker 3: short for Scooter Pie is even here because he hates
- 32:13Speaker 3: Scooter Pie.
- 32:14Speaker 5: There's two things. It was hard for me to watch
- 32:16Speaker 5: that story because a Neil Flynn is funnier than the
- 32:19Speaker 5: material he gave him, you know what I mean in
- 32:21Speaker 5: that one, because we could have done a much funnier
- 32:23Speaker 5: stuff with your nickname.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Uh.
- 32:25Speaker 5: And then b is I don't know why he's eating
- 32:29Speaker 5: a popsicle in that next one, I see he seemed
- 32:33Speaker 5: to want to be eating it, which made me really laugh.
- 32:35Speaker 5: And then the third one is I remember that because
- 32:38Speaker 5: we're you know, strapped for figured out a moment. Uh
- 32:41Speaker 5: at the end when someone finally calls you Scooter, which
- 32:44Speaker 5: is a moment I do like uh, and I go
- 32:47Speaker 5: it's revealed, Neil, and he's like, how should I celebrate
- 32:49Speaker 5: I'm like, I don't know, do some kind of dance
- 32:51Speaker 5: or Irish jig or something. And that made me laugh
- 32:54Speaker 5: out loud because he committed to it, like good god,
- 32:59Speaker 5: yeah he could.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Really he could.
- 33:01Speaker 4: But Neil just pulled out an irs shade because it
- 33:03Speaker 4: looks pretty good.
- 33:05Speaker 5: Yeah I didn't. I don't think that he We had
- 33:06Speaker 5: planned that, you know, and you know we put the
- 33:09Speaker 5: music to it. We put the music to it. Afterwards.
- 33:11Speaker 2: It was really he went straight river dance. He went
- 33:13Speaker 2: to straight river dance.
- 33:15Speaker 1: That was funny before.
- 33:18Speaker 2: That's also not us at that beach by the way.
- 33:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't want to ask you. I don't know
- 33:21Speaker 4: those doubles because that's not my hair, and I know if.
- 33:23Speaker 2: That is your in my head also yeah, no, I
- 33:25Speaker 2: think we went and got that without you guys.
- 33:28Speaker 4: Okay, but Donald's double is good my mind.
- 33:31Speaker 1: I always ran.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Now it doesn't look like my head.
- 33:33Speaker 1: I'm going I'm going to do that. I'm going to
- 33:36Speaker 1: that Donald that looks like your head. I'm at four seconds.
- 33:39Speaker 1: If you're following, I.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Wish it was my head.
- 33:40Speaker 5: It is so not you guys, A and B you guys.
- 33:46Speaker 5: This is the show runner issue. I don't know if
- 33:48Speaker 5: you guys have this. What the fun thing about watching
- 33:52Speaker 5: these shows for me is that I just watched them
- 33:56Speaker 5: for all the mistakes I made, especially early and like
- 33:58Speaker 5: even that stupid fantasy, I didn't have a frontal shot
- 34:02Speaker 5: coming back on you two, like the flash out of it.
- 34:04Speaker 5: So it was a weird transition, Like, ah, man, it's
- 34:07Speaker 5: screwed that up too. I still at the stage.
- 34:10Speaker 3: I think this is I think this is such a
- 34:12Speaker 3: funny episode. I laughed so many times in this episode.
- 34:14Speaker 3: So you see, what you see is your mess ups.
- 34:18Speaker 2: What I see is you know. I that That's how
- 34:21Speaker 2: it always I feel like that's how it always is
- 34:23Speaker 2: with people, you.
- 34:23Speaker 5: Know what I mean?
- 34:24Speaker 3: Like we we make things and then we find the
- 34:27Speaker 3: flaws in them. But if you sit back and let
- 34:29Speaker 3: other people tell you how amazing it is, you'll be like, really,
- 34:32Speaker 3: I didn't see them, you know what I mean?
- 34:34Speaker 6: This good?
- 34:35Speaker 2: That's another one.
- 34:36Speaker 4: Oh drink Bill.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I laughed that you chose smooth jazz from when we're
- 34:40Speaker 1: sitting on the bench, unless that's another track that's been changed.
- 34:43Speaker 5: But when I don't, I don't know, but I didn't
- 34:45Speaker 5: remember it. Look, I had my first weird thing. I
- 34:48Speaker 5: was giving you guys shit here at home for not
- 34:51Speaker 5: remembering any of this stuff. And uh, I wrote this
- 34:55Speaker 5: script by myself like at home to catch us up.
- 34:59Speaker 5: And h I didn't remember writing it. I didn't remember
- 35:02Speaker 5: what it was about. So I watched it was really weird.
- 35:04Speaker 1: So is that what?
- 35:04Speaker 4: Just talk to that for a second.
- 35:06Speaker 1: So, so, when you're the showrunner, you're overseeing your writing
- 35:09Speaker 1: staff having episodes, and then of course you end up
- 35:12Speaker 1: rewriting them a lot yourself. But when you said you
- 35:14Speaker 1: wrote this to catch up, just to explain that to
- 35:17Speaker 1: people the you know you.
- 35:20Speaker 5: In comedy staffs especially, someone will go out and write
- 35:23Speaker 5: a draft. The whole staff will help kind of you know,
- 35:26Speaker 5: you outline it and do out stuff. Whole staff will
- 35:27Speaker 5: help kind of punch it up. And then the showrunner
- 35:31Speaker 5: of any show that you've ever loved will usually do
- 35:33Speaker 5: a pass of it before it shoots, you know, just
- 35:37Speaker 5: not just out of arrogance, but out of wanting the
- 35:40Speaker 5: show to sound like it's from that one distinct voice.
- 35:42Speaker 5: That's why people over the years, you know, they noticed
- 35:45Speaker 5: when the showrunner on one of their favorite shows left
- 35:48Speaker 5: for a year, how it suddenly sounds different, you know,
- 35:51Speaker 5: And when you get caught and behind in writing. You know,
- 35:54Speaker 5: when you look at all the different stages, outline which
- 35:57Speaker 5: has to be approved by the showrunner, uh draft which
- 36:00Speaker 5: gets notes from the showrunner, rewrite with the whole staff,
- 36:04Speaker 5: which the showrunner does, you know what I mean. It's
- 36:07Speaker 5: you often can catch back up if you're behind writing.
- 36:10Speaker 5: If as the showrunner, you're like, hey, why we're all
- 36:12Speaker 5: doing this, I'll outline one on my own and write
- 36:14Speaker 5: it and then just drag all you this whole gang
- 36:17Speaker 5: and to punch it up really quick and then we'll
- 36:18Speaker 5: shoot it, you know. And so that was one of
- 36:20Speaker 5: those one and sometimes those to tell you the truth
- 36:25Speaker 5: in a weird way. Sometimes the don't aren't. Those aren't
- 36:27Speaker 5: as good as other episodes because showrunners don't have to
- 36:30Speaker 5: listen to other people's input and sometimes and sometimes instead
- 36:34Speaker 5: of the whole group punching it up, you'll just hand
- 36:36Speaker 5: it in and go that's done. Now, we're as long
- 36:38Speaker 5: as we don't spend four days trying to make it better.
- 36:41Speaker 5: We're back on timing again. You know, make twenty four
- 36:44Speaker 5: episodes this year.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Well, you nailed it with this one, man.
- 36:46Speaker 3: This one has everything that you're looking for from you know,
- 36:50Speaker 3: from the drama to the comedy.
- 36:52Speaker 2: This was I laughed so many times at this episode.
- 36:57Speaker 5: There was a couple of things. I really liked it. Mate.
- 36:59Speaker 1: You know, at one fourteen, Neil is just boring a
- 37:04Speaker 1: giant hole in the reception desk for no, for no
- 37:06Speaker 1: apparent reason. I was trying to think about what what
- 37:08Speaker 1: Neil's doing?
- 37:09Speaker 5: No, you know what, you know what that's for.
- 37:11Speaker 7: This is what you'll see early on, and you guys
- 37:13Speaker 7: should look for it.
- 37:15Speaker 5: There are certain things that exist solely because directors, once
- 37:19Speaker 5: they knew that they were allowed to have fun visually,
- 37:22Speaker 5: you know, on this particular show, would work backwards from
- 37:25Speaker 5: the shot they wanted, so that, without a doubt was
- 37:28Speaker 5: somebody working backwards from in the script JD going hey,
- 37:33Speaker 5: uh and the jannit they're turning and being imposing, you
- 37:36Speaker 5: know what I mean and saying, oh, you know what'd
- 37:37Speaker 5: be cool is this giant ten foot drill in JD's face.
- 37:40Speaker 1: I know, I know, but I'm just laughing it. I'm
- 37:42Speaker 1: just labbing because I like to just rationalize things. I'm like,
- 37:45Speaker 1: what assignment did he have with that drill in that
- 37:47Speaker 1: reception desk? I guess he was adding a new hole
- 37:50Speaker 1: for a new phone line or something.
- 37:51Speaker 5: Well, dude, we used to get It's so funny if
- 37:54Speaker 5: you think about this in terms for writers. At first,
- 37:56Speaker 5: it would annoy us when we would see, you know, uh,
- 38:00Speaker 5: what directors came up with, for like why is the
- 38:02Speaker 5: janitor there? How is he going to be imposing? And
- 38:04Speaker 5: then when we would get trapped, we'd start making jokes
- 38:06Speaker 5: out of it. And one of my favorite ones, we
- 38:09Speaker 5: needed the janitor in there and we didn't know why,
- 38:12Speaker 5: and so we had him say I don't really have
- 38:14Speaker 5: anything to do. I'm mopping the rug, and then I
- 38:18Speaker 5: love you. I love you guys. Remember then the rest
- 38:21Speaker 5: of that scene, when you guys walked across that rug,
- 38:23Speaker 5: you would hear squishy sounds like why is that guy
- 38:29Speaker 5: mop on the rug?
- 38:30Speaker 1: I love that Neil would Neil would take it seriously
- 38:32Speaker 1: and he'd be like, I why would my character be
- 38:34Speaker 1: mopping in a carpeted room? Yeah, you know, it's just
- 38:38Speaker 1: everybody wants their motivation, you know, of course, but Donald
- 38:41Speaker 1: pointed out I think and what Donald was? You mentioned that?
- 38:45Speaker 5: You know?
- 38:45Speaker 1: I never realized either. But the janitor feels like he's
- 38:47Speaker 1: a pretty good janitor, right, I mean he's absolutely I
- 38:50Speaker 1: never realized until rewatching it, but like, even though he
- 38:53Speaker 1: spends his entire existence fuggy with me, you know, he
- 38:56Speaker 1: does his best. He's pretty much a one man band
- 38:58Speaker 1: except for that that that Troy Troy, Oh my god,
- 39:01Speaker 1: nice to the except for Troy and then Martin.
- 39:05Speaker 5: Yeah, Troy was the best because Troy frustrated the janitor
- 39:10Speaker 5: to no end. My favorite thing was when Troy's like,
- 39:12Speaker 5: I'm gonna go beat you up. He's like, that's not
- 39:13Speaker 5: how we do it, man, It's not how we do it.
- 39:18Speaker 5: It was literally like, we're better than that.
- 39:20Speaker 6: Man.
- 39:21Speaker 5: I enjoyed working with Flynn.
- 39:23Speaker 1: And I forgot about the Frozen Effecting Bill and it's
- 39:26Speaker 1: really cool.
- 39:26Speaker 4: It's a two forty three.
- 39:27Speaker 1: It's really done well and I don't even remember how
- 39:30Speaker 1: we pulled that off, but the foreground and background are frozen. Yeah,
- 39:34Speaker 1: and whoever that was executed was really good. And then
- 39:37Speaker 1: we go to the guy who's then on the other
- 39:39Speaker 1: side of things. We go to the guy who's just
- 39:41Speaker 1: frozen and doing a horrible job trying to be frozen
- 39:43Speaker 1: without anything.
- 39:44Speaker 5: I know, you know, you know what's really interesting is
- 39:47Speaker 5: it one of the things you'll see in the first year.
- 39:50Speaker 5: Much like the sound effects that you guys noticed is
- 39:52Speaker 5: they're drifting away. I think they're almost gone. I'm hoping.
- 39:55Speaker 1: We keep laughing, we keep laughing that that you say,
- 39:58Speaker 1: they're almost going away, and then we.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Hear and then there'.
- 40:02Speaker 5: Jingle bells. Yeah, jingle balls balls. But that The other
- 40:06Speaker 5: thing that you have to look for is we used
- 40:09Speaker 5: to because writers have to procrastinate, We used to have
- 40:12Speaker 5: hours of talks about rules, you know, and the rules
- 40:16Speaker 5: of the world, and uh, this broke one of them,
- 40:21Speaker 5: and we made it right after this was you can't
- 40:23Speaker 5: still be in a fantasy after you're out of a fantasy, oh,
- 40:26Speaker 5: you know, because then after you flash out, it has
- 40:29Speaker 5: to be real. The one the conversation that tortured people
- 40:33Speaker 5: forever and we didn't show the answer to it to
- 40:35Speaker 5: like the six or seventh year, is when Jad has
- 40:37Speaker 5: these long fantasies, what's he doing? Is he just standing there?
- 40:41Speaker 1: Yeah, that's happening.
- 40:43Speaker 5: And eventually eventually we had you and talking to the
- 40:47Speaker 5: todd in like the sixth or seventh year, when you go,
- 40:51Speaker 5: huh oh, that makes me think about trolls and you
- 40:54Speaker 5: go like this, and then Rob the better part of
- 40:59Speaker 5: like thirty second and then you're like, and.
- 41:01Speaker 7: That's why you shouldn't buy blah blah blahs or whatever.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean, well you started.
- 41:06Speaker 4: It's funny because the last time you're wrong.
- 41:08Speaker 1: We talked about how when I, when I came out
- 41:10Speaker 1: of a fantasy, I had agreed to buy Nurse Roberts
- 41:12Speaker 1: dead husband's of bowling shoes and I didn't know because
- 41:16Speaker 1: I was in a fantasy land, but I forgot. You
- 41:18Speaker 1: didn't really keep that little thing going that I would
- 41:21Speaker 1: have been a funny runner if like JD, because he's
- 41:23Speaker 1: in a fantasy, ends up agreeing to all this random shit.
- 41:27Speaker 7: We didn't have any of the rules yet, man, and
- 41:29Speaker 7: we were trying.
- 41:30Speaker 5: People used to argue all like the biggest argument that
- 41:32Speaker 5: you guys can look for in the writer's room in
- 41:34Speaker 5: a eight up hours the first year was was JD's
- 41:38Speaker 5: voiceover omniscient? Did he know what was going on in
- 41:42Speaker 5: the other stories and could narrate them or did we
- 41:45Speaker 5: have to write it so general as if he's talking
- 41:47Speaker 5: about himself but doesn't know about those stories. And it
- 41:50Speaker 5: used to drive people insane?
- 41:52Speaker 2: Right, were we a hit at this time? At this
- 41:54Speaker 2: point where we like, did we get the back nine
- 41:56Speaker 2: at this point?
- 41:58Speaker 5: Yeah, the first the show, the show did so well
- 42:02Speaker 5: coming out of the gate, the first year that it
- 42:06Speaker 5: was considered a hit, and then the second year they
- 42:09Speaker 5: made a mistake in my view, and uh, the first
- 42:13Speaker 5: year of the show it was sometimes increasing on its
- 42:16Speaker 5: lead in and just crushing and you're they should have
- 42:21Speaker 5: kept it there forever. And then the set they said,
- 42:23Speaker 5: it's such a big show for us. Next year, we're
- 42:25Speaker 5: going to put it after Friends. And the combination of
- 42:29Speaker 5: no show could retain eighty five percent of Friends' audience.
- 42:34Speaker 5: It was a cultural you know, lightning bolt, and so
- 42:39Speaker 5: you know, we were like the eighth rank show in
- 42:41Speaker 5: the country. But they're like, you're only retaining like sixty
- 42:44Speaker 5: seven percent of their audience. So we're and just so
- 42:48Speaker 5: you know, anytime they want to do a forty minute episode,
- 42:51Speaker 5: we're going to make it supersized and you guys will
- 42:53Speaker 5: be moved or not on or whatever. And they never
- 42:58Speaker 5: they should have they didn't know the show. They should
- 43:00Speaker 5: have put us after Friends and left us there in perpetuity.
- 43:03Speaker 5: The show would have been bigger and bigger, but instead
- 43:05Speaker 5: they put nine thousand different shows one after another, after Friends,
- 43:09Speaker 5: each time pulling them when they don't get the same
- 43:12Speaker 5: ratings as this giant monster juggernaut and never established a
- 43:16Speaker 5: new successful show after that show in its entire existence.
- 43:19Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, not only that, it was also the
- 43:22Speaker 3: end of Friends too, And then Joey came right after that,
- 43:25Speaker 3: and then we followed Joey for a little bit.
- 43:27Speaker 1: And I followed it.
- 43:28Speaker 2: It doesn't work either, now, yeah, we followed Joey for
- 43:30Speaker 2: like a little bit.
- 43:31Speaker 1: And then for those of you who don't know what
- 43:35Speaker 1: the networks want, Bill, please correct me if I'm wrong.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Is they want you to hold that is to say,
- 43:40Speaker 1: keep eighty five percent of the lead in show's audience,
- 43:44Speaker 1: which is pretty impossible if it's Friends and it's the
- 43:47Speaker 1: biggest show ever. And if you go below that then
- 43:49Speaker 1: they kind of start thinking about moving you or losing you,
- 43:52Speaker 1: right right.
- 43:53Speaker 5: Oh yeah, Well, the only difference is they would have
- 43:55Speaker 5: left because the show is so well reviewed and was
- 43:57Speaker 5: doing really well. If they owned our show, this is
- 43:59Speaker 5: all boring business, they would have kept us on there forever, going, hey,
- 44:02Speaker 5: we'll keep this on forever and make tons of money
- 44:04Speaker 5: for ourselves. But since they didn't own it, the second
- 44:06Speaker 5: it didn't immediately become bigger than Friends. They said, let's
- 44:10Speaker 5: try some shows that we owned to see if they
- 44:12Speaker 5: become bigger than Friends.
- 44:13Speaker 3: And just kind of feel like that was I feel
- 44:14Speaker 3: like Friends was the end of tg of not TGIF,
- 44:18Speaker 3: but that Thursday night line.
- 44:19Speaker 5: On must see Must see Thursdays.
- 44:22Speaker 2: I feel like that's a no.
- 44:24Speaker 5: Yes, you know, because you'll like this. You guys should
- 44:27Speaker 5: get it. And I interrupt him, Sorry, Donald, But Jeff
- 44:29Speaker 5: and Gold, who is an NBC exec, has a Must
- 44:33Speaker 5: See Thursday poster in his office. He's proud of when
- 44:36Speaker 5: it was US thirty Rock, the office and parks and
- 44:40Speaker 5: rec We're all Thursday and that's that was a cool
- 44:42Speaker 5: That was a cool lineup.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Yeah, at one point that was a Thursday night.
- 44:46Speaker 5: I think it was I can't remember if I have
- 44:48Speaker 5: the no, it might have been Earl, but it was
- 44:50Speaker 5: US thirty Rock office and either Earl or you know,
- 44:56Speaker 5: but it was He's like, that was total, a total
- 44:58Speaker 5: must they were still doing.
- 45:00Speaker 2: That's a pretty good muss seat Thursday. Man, that's a
- 45:02Speaker 2: pretty muss seat Thursday.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Shall we talk about Nicole Sullivan? Guys, absolutely, Bill tell
- 45:08Speaker 1: us about obviously, you know a lot of people know
- 45:12Speaker 1: knew Nicole Sullivan from Mad TV and how did how
- 45:15Speaker 1: did you choose her? Were you friends with her?
- 45:17Speaker 5: She was going, Yeah, she was another you know, we
- 45:19Speaker 5: brought people through our world that were friends of mine
- 45:22Speaker 5: that I knew were super talented. We wanted to have
- 45:25Speaker 5: her in this world because not only is she really funny,
- 45:30Speaker 5: but we knew she could actually act. And we had,
- 45:34Speaker 5: you know, kind of the idea beforehand, whether it was
- 45:38Speaker 5: with Brendan Frasier or her or Missus Wilke, that there
- 45:43Speaker 5: were sometimes patients that we would say, let's bring them
- 45:46Speaker 5: in and know that they're going to come back, you know.
- 45:49Speaker 5: And so we didn't know right then that Nicole was
- 45:52Speaker 5: going to die, but we knew she was going to
- 45:53Speaker 5: come back. And uh so we were setting her up
- 45:57Speaker 5: for the crap that, you know journey that her person
- 45:59Speaker 5: went down, you know, in a cool way. I think
- 46:03Speaker 5: the most fun way to do that. Donald said something
- 46:06Speaker 5: about it is you sneak it up on people. You
- 46:08Speaker 5: introduce somebody as something that's just going to be funny
- 46:10Speaker 5: in a goof to see them, and you get people
- 46:12Speaker 5: emotionally invested. So when there's stuff, when the wheels come off,
- 46:16Speaker 5: people are just you know, emotionally affected by that.
- 46:19Speaker 3: That was something that you know, uh, and it just
- 46:23Speaker 3: shows how great of a writer you are. You know,
- 46:26Speaker 3: I'm sure you're you know this already.
- 46:29Speaker 5: But he does like a like a like a Michael
- 46:31Speaker 5: Jaminski of writing.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Almost you said you you would give everybody clues. The
- 46:38Speaker 2: clues are there, and if you're really paying attention, you know,
- 46:42Speaker 2: if you're really really paying attention, when it happens, it's
- 46:46Speaker 2: not that big of a surprise like it's we foreshadowed
- 46:49Speaker 2: so much.
- 46:50Speaker 5: Yeah, you talked about that, and I really appreciated it
- 46:53Speaker 5: because the way our staff worked that I thought was
- 46:55Speaker 5: cool before in the pre production every year before we
- 46:58Speaker 5: wrote episodes, we talked about what big things, you know,
- 47:03Speaker 5: arcs and stuff we wanted to do. Like we'd say, hey,
- 47:07Speaker 5: we want Turk and Car to get engaged, but we
- 47:11Speaker 5: want it to be a little bit of a rocky road.
- 47:13Speaker 7: And then we would work backwards, same way.
- 47:15Speaker 5: We'd go, hey, we want Johnny c to end up
- 47:17Speaker 5: with his ex who's never moved past now he's a
- 47:19Speaker 5: more matureian. We work work backwards. We're gonna kill Brendan Fraser.
- 47:22Speaker 5: It's worked backwards and then it would almost seem when
- 47:24Speaker 5: we're doing these initial episodes. Since we had already plotted
- 47:27Speaker 5: out these arcs, it was very easy to go, all right,
- 47:31Speaker 5: so if Nicole.
- 47:32Speaker 7: Sullivan's gonna eventually die, and.
- 47:37Speaker 5: Let's establish her here as a fun, neurotic person that
- 47:40Speaker 5: you think is just being kinde of hypochondriac, and then
- 47:44Speaker 5: do you know what I mean? So it is set
- 47:46Speaker 5: up because we were working backwards from the big episodes
- 47:49Speaker 5: that we wanted to accomplish. Was part of the fun.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good writing to me.
- 47:52Speaker 3: That's because whenever you can look back and say to yourself,
- 47:56Speaker 3: was there and I didn't see it?
- 47:58Speaker 5: Right?
- 47:58Speaker 2: I feel like you know, Kayser So's you.
- 48:01Speaker 5: Know, yeah, it is the it's the trick of it all.
- 48:05Speaker 1: That's the trick is that is you know you're not
- 48:07Speaker 1: gonna the audience isn't gonna have the heartbreak for an asshole.
- 48:10Speaker 1: You know, you got to have the audience fall in
- 48:12Speaker 1: love with them and go, oh, I love listener. She's wacky,
- 48:14Speaker 1: she's silly, She's I want to be her friend, she's
- 48:17Speaker 1: you want to you want to fall in love with
- 48:19Speaker 1: the person before Bill kills them.
- 48:22Speaker 5: It was the it was the one trick we went
- 48:24Speaker 5: back to a lot. It was too mean, was we
- 48:26Speaker 5: knew in twenty two minutes it was too hard to
- 48:28Speaker 5: get people to love someone and then kill them. So
- 48:30Speaker 5: we're like, all right, let's bring them and do another story.
- 48:33Speaker 5: And our goal is not only to do a successful story,
- 48:36Speaker 5: but make people like this person so that when they die,
- 48:41Speaker 5: we're uh screwed. The only time we thought we pulled
- 48:45Speaker 5: it off, that we killed someone people cared about in
- 48:49Speaker 5: one episode. It ties to this one because this is
- 48:52Speaker 5: me being a dummy. So Nicole Sullivan, you know, one
- 48:55Speaker 5: of the bride'smaids at my wedding, old friend she I'm
- 48:58Speaker 5: not good at naming characters. She played Jill Tracy, and uh,
- 49:03Speaker 5: and then I didn't realize till later. Jill Tracy, who's
- 49:06Speaker 5: Tim Hobert at the executive producer, one of them a
- 49:11Speaker 5: great actress in her own right. Not only had I
- 49:14Speaker 5: not put her on the show, but I named another
- 49:16Speaker 5: character after and somebody else played it. So then Jill
- 49:21Speaker 5: Tracy came and played the woman who died in a
- 49:24Speaker 5: Broadway musical. Waiting for my real life to the game.
- 49:30Speaker 2: On a clear day when I can't see.
- 49:36Speaker 5: Very long crazy.
- 49:43Speaker 1: So did she call you?
- 49:44Speaker 4: Did did you real jail Jill Tracy call you?
- 49:46Speaker 1: And what was she like?
- 49:48Speaker 5: No, Tim is just such a good buddy. I realized that,
- 49:51Speaker 5: you know, as it happened, and I'm like, oh, I'm
- 49:53Speaker 5: a piece of shit. We gotta make sure we get
- 49:54Speaker 5: you in there. And she was luckily also a Broadway
- 49:57Speaker 5: level singer and had done musical theater her whole life.
- 49:59Speaker 1: You know, she was great, Hey, I'm looking at these
- 50:01Speaker 1: blackberries and I remember that this was like the time
- 50:03Speaker 1: that blackberries came out and Bill, as I recall, you
- 50:06Speaker 1: gave us all our first blackberries as a present.
- 50:09Speaker 5: Yeah, it gave them to everybody as a Christmas gift.
- 50:11Speaker 4: And I have a memory I remember you like we
- 50:13Speaker 4: were like, what is this so you can type on it?
- 50:17Speaker 3: Yeah, that I wrote that down, Nicole Sullivan says email
- 50:20Speaker 3: as we're talking. That kind of dates the show.
- 50:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, I know it was so weird.
- 50:28Speaker 1: That means right when they all came out. I mean
- 50:30Speaker 1: that's we were like state of the art. She's got
- 50:31Speaker 1: a state of the art gadget.
- 50:33Speaker 7: Getting back to the.
- 50:34Speaker 5: Show, that was one of my favorite things because we
- 50:36Speaker 5: really wanted everybody had their thing to overcome on this show,
- 50:41Speaker 5: and we really wanted Sarah Chalk's character to overcome how
- 50:45Speaker 5: hard she always is on herself and you know how
- 50:49Speaker 5: much she buries herself psychologically and on an unhealthy way
- 50:52Speaker 5: with all her work. And my favorite scene in this
- 50:56Speaker 5: besides the Judy and Zach went out in the rain,
- 50:59Speaker 5: was Sarah and Johnny C with Johnny C doing some
- 51:03Speaker 5: really subtle stuff when he says, go ahead and make
- 51:05Speaker 5: your case why Jill Tracy can stay in the hospital,
- 51:09Speaker 5: and Sarah is saying, you know, sometimes you get overwhelmed,
- 51:11Speaker 5: and it's this and this, and John McGinley is without
- 51:15Speaker 5: doing anything big, proving to her that she does the
- 51:17Speaker 5: very same thing to herself. I love that moment.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:20Speaker 5: The reason I loved it as a writer was it
- 51:22Speaker 5: wasn't something that Sarah was necessarily doing in this episode,
- 51:26Speaker 5: but she had done it in every episode up to
- 51:28Speaker 5: this one.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:29Speaker 3: I wrote that down that that that's such a great moment.
- 51:32Speaker 3: That scene is so awesome and Sarah pulls it off
- 51:35Speaker 3: really well where she's talking about you know, she's talking
- 51:38Speaker 3: about Nicole's character and then and then you know, Johnny says,
- 51:41Speaker 3: but have you looked at how you have you looked
- 51:43Speaker 3: at yourself?
- 51:44Speaker 2: I know I'm a skin and then.
- 51:49Speaker 5: That she's like, and she's like and then she'll do anything.
- 51:51Speaker 5: She's such a people pleaser for anyone.
- 51:52Speaker 7: I think he says, will you go clean up my
- 51:54Speaker 7: dog shit and take it to do it lunch?
- 52:00Speaker 4: She's really good in that scene.
- 52:01Speaker 3: Oh but it cuts right from that into you pulling
- 52:04Speaker 3: up in the cab, and that's where I got pissed
- 52:07Speaker 3: off because right there, like, no, not now jam but
- 52:12Speaker 3: it's but it marries so well, you know what I mean.
- 52:16Speaker 5: It's drunk out and by the way, and then the
- 52:18Speaker 5: parings we did in this one, the pairings we did
- 52:20Speaker 5: in this show made me think of another question I
- 52:23Speaker 5: answered to you guys in the previous episode, because I
- 52:25Speaker 5: believe Kelso calls you Turk in this episode because you
- 52:30Speaker 5: guys are having a battle, and he did.
- 52:32Speaker 2: It in another episode too, he did it.
- 52:34Speaker 5: But that's why it's important. It's important to know that
- 52:39Speaker 5: that's why we do believe he thinks your name is Turkleton.
- 52:43Speaker 5: But that's why we got to the logic with the
- 52:45Speaker 5: writers that he thinks your name is Turk Turkleton. When
- 52:49Speaker 5: we said we said you know, he thinks her name
- 52:52Speaker 5: is doctor Turkleton. You know, in the writers you fight
- 52:55Speaker 5: about everything writers room. A lot of the writers were like,
- 52:58Speaker 5: he can't, he's called him Turk before. And then somebody's like, well,
- 53:01Speaker 5: then he thinks his name is Turk Turkleton.
- 53:05Speaker 2: That's one of the best. And to this day, to
- 53:08Speaker 2: this day, to this day, there are a lot of
- 53:11Speaker 2: there are a.
- 53:12Speaker 3: Lot of Scrubs fans that know, you know, Christopher Turk
- 53:15Speaker 3: is the name, but there are some that honestly believe
- 53:18Speaker 3: Turk Turkleton is the characters man.
- 53:21Speaker 5: You know what else, by the way, came up randomly
- 53:23Speaker 5: is somebody asked me after why you were named Gandhi,
- 53:27Speaker 5: Like why doctor Coxon name checked.
- 53:29Speaker 2: You as Gandhi Because I was a bald head guy.
- 53:31Speaker 5: It wasn't just that, it was because I was concurrently
- 53:34Speaker 5: looking at cartoons and okaying the character design with Chris
- 53:38Speaker 5: and Phil for Clone High and the Gandhi character. They
- 53:42Speaker 5: had him with a hip go T because he was
- 53:44Speaker 5: a young teen version and whatever, and I'm like, oh, ship, we.
- 53:48Speaker 2: Should go I do.
- 53:50Speaker 3: We were typically going to talk about that right now.
- 53:52Speaker 3: Let's just go to commercial real quick.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Okay, sure, Commercial.
- 54:07Speaker 3: Okay, we're back. Steph is in the house, y'all. Steph
- 54:10Speaker 3: is in the house. Steph. Steph is in the house.
- 54:13Speaker 1: All right, Steph is in the house. We're just gonna
- 54:15Speaker 1: finish the Clone High chat. So Steph.
- 54:17Speaker 2: Okay, so let's get.
- 54:17Speaker 3: Back into Clone High. Dude, you now, had Phil and
- 54:22Speaker 3: Chris done anything before this.
- 54:24Speaker 5: Or or they were barely they were barely getting their
- 54:27Speaker 5: careers started. They were young animators from for Disney that
- 54:31Speaker 5: went to Dartmouth and we're also very funny and we're
- 54:34Speaker 5: just starting their career as kind of comedy writer animated.
- 54:37Speaker 5: The had done nothing. It was like the first project
- 54:40Speaker 5: that I supervised someone else the way I was supervised.
- 54:43Speaker 2: And now the two.
- 54:43Speaker 5: Guys that are gonna give me and you and Steph
- 54:46Speaker 5: and Joelle a job. Eventually, I pray that they.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Give me Donald wyt you explain the context, because not
- 54:52Speaker 1: everyone's gonna know what the hell are Okay.
- 54:53Speaker 3: So Chris and Philip gone on to create movies like
- 54:57Speaker 3: twenty one Jump Street, twenty two Lego Street, the Lego
- 55:00Speaker 3: Lego Movie, the best, probably the best Spider Man movie ever.
- 55:04Speaker 5: Into the Spider Verse.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, yes.
- 55:09Speaker 5: They were the animators, directors writers of that as well.
- 55:11Speaker 3: Yes, they've gone on to do some amazing things. But
- 55:14Speaker 3: in the beginning, before this all happened, there was a
- 55:16Speaker 3: little show called Clone High, which Bill was an executive
- 55:20Speaker 3: producer on, And while we were making scrubs in the basement,
- 55:25Speaker 3: they were doing all their recordings.
- 55:26Speaker 1: And in the mental war in the mental ward. I
- 55:28Speaker 1: believe that was the writers.
- 55:30Speaker 5: Yeah, we hid to save money.
- 55:32Speaker 7: We hid our writing staff of that show in the hospital.
- 55:35Speaker 5: And then you guys just casually started to notice other
- 55:38Speaker 5: writers around the commissary every day eating. Yeah, I'm just
- 55:42Speaker 5: hanging out there.
- 55:42Speaker 2: But they put us in the show too. So I
- 55:44Speaker 2: got an opportunity to play two really cool characters in
- 55:47Speaker 2: that were.
- 55:48Speaker 5: You George Washington, which is I was George, and.
- 55:52Speaker 3: I was also Toots, who was Joanavak's father in law
- 55:56Speaker 3: or something like that.
- 55:56Speaker 7: Yeah, it was a blind It was a blind former
- 55:58Speaker 7: jazz man.
- 55:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 55:59Speaker 5: Yeah, Yeah, it's so weird because all a bunch of
- 56:02Speaker 5: Clone High nerds. I love Big Mouth, but Toots is
- 56:05Speaker 5: very much like the jazzy ghost that they have in
- 56:09Speaker 5: that cartoon Big Mouth.
- 56:10Speaker 4: You know, are you guys bringing it back?
- 56:11Speaker 1: In some way.
- 56:12Speaker 5: Bill, I'm not at liberty to discuss that yet.
- 56:16Speaker 4: No, I stumbled across something top secret audience.
- 56:19Speaker 2: That would be awesome.
- 56:20Speaker 5: That's a good tease.
- 56:21Speaker 4: I was in it too, but I don't know who
- 56:23Speaker 4: I played a lot.
- 56:25Speaker 2: You weren't in it a lot.
- 56:26Speaker 4: I don't minimize my part.
- 56:28Speaker 1: I did occur.
- 56:29Speaker 5: I did it was it was such a cool college
- 56:31Speaker 5: filmmaking type atmosphere, which is what Scrubs was anyways, that
- 56:34Speaker 5: you guys would be shooting scenes and we would literally go, hey,
- 56:37Speaker 5: do you mind while you're eating to walk downstairs and
- 56:41Speaker 5: record a voice being a cartoon character, and you guys
- 56:43Speaker 5: were also nice about it.
- 56:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:44Speaker 2: Well, I loved working on that show Man. That was
- 56:47Speaker 2: a lot of fun.
- 56:47Speaker 1: I was Paul Revere, Joelle is telling so Paul Revere
- 56:50Speaker 1: is an important character everybody.
- 56:52Speaker 2: Yeah, but that was like one episode.
- 56:55Speaker 5: You had a bigger You had a bigger one when
- 56:57Speaker 5: you were selling a weird energy paste with Sarah Chalk
- 57:00Speaker 5: and Marilyn Manson came in and saying the food Pyramid song.
- 57:03Speaker 5: It's very weird.
- 57:04Speaker 3: Yeah, dude, I just remember being I remember being there,
- 57:06Speaker 3: and this is the first time I met Mandy Moore.
- 57:08Speaker 2: She did a guest spot on the show.
- 57:10Speaker 1: I met Uh, I've never remember what shall we go to, Steph?
- 57:14Speaker 2: I met Tom Green? That was cool. That was the
- 57:17Speaker 2: first time I've ever met Tom Green and he was
- 57:18Speaker 2: on fire at the time and was on it.
- 57:21Speaker 5: Steph was on.
- 57:23Speaker 3: And also even we have a caller, guys, our caller
- 57:27Speaker 3: has has Finally we're gonna let her talk.
- 57:29Speaker 4: Okadies and gentlemen, please welcome Steph.
- 57:34Speaker 9: Bill.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Bill's counting into everything. Dan, turn off the theme song, Steph.
- 57:42Speaker 7: At any point that you want to hear that awesome song,
- 57:45Speaker 7: just say five to six seven eight.
- 57:50Speaker 2: It's official. Anytime you say five six seven eight.
- 57:55Speaker 6: Maybe wait three whole minutes so I think it's only
- 57:58Speaker 6: just right, Okay, five six seven.
- 58:04Speaker 4: Eight, Okay, but not the whole song, the damn stopping
- 58:07Speaker 4: to stop it?
- 58:08Speaker 2: Do you want to do the tag at the end? Stuff?
- 58:12Speaker 4: I don't know, give us the tag?
- 58:18Speaker 5: Good boys?
- 58:19Speaker 1: All right, this this has all gone to ship Steph.
- 58:21Speaker 1: What's your question?
- 58:23Speaker 6: So I'm finishing up my second year of medical school,
- 58:27Speaker 6: which is in part due to scrubs.
- 58:30Speaker 9: So basically, yeah, super funny story.
- 58:35Speaker 6: I alluded to this in my personal statement but left
- 58:37Speaker 6: out certain details because I didn't want them to not
- 58:39Speaker 6: take me seriously.
- 58:40Speaker 9: But basically, my mom was a surgeon.
- 58:44Speaker 6: So when I was growing up, I saw like, you know,
- 58:46Speaker 6: pictures of her job and stuff like that, and I
- 58:49Speaker 6: thought it looked awful. I was like, I have no
- 58:51Speaker 6: idea how you do what you do. She's a breast
- 58:53Speaker 6: cancer surgeon. So I was like, that's disgusting, Like, how
- 58:56Speaker 6: do you look at boobs all day? So weird?
- 58:58Speaker 9: I never am going into medicine.
- 59:00Speaker 2: How do you look at boobs all day?
- 59:02Speaker 5: That's just I don't know, it's easier if you're not
- 59:04Speaker 5: a medical professional. Continue, I got it.
- 59:06Speaker 6: Yeah, So I started watching Scrubs maybe like I don't
- 59:10Speaker 6: even remember when, maybe in middle school, and I related
- 59:13Speaker 6: to Elliott's character on such a spiritual level that I
- 59:17Speaker 6: was like, this looks really fun. Maybe I will go
- 59:19Speaker 6: into medicine. And since then kind of became more legitimate.
- 59:23Speaker 9: But definitely the first thing that piqued my interest with Scrubs.
- 59:26Speaker 9: So thank you guys.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Do you use the word frick a lot?
- 59:32Speaker 9: I kind of graduated to the U version.
- 59:35Speaker 6: But.
- 59:37Speaker 10: Sometimes I mean, I gotta say I want to interject
- 59:41Speaker 10: stuff because that means so much to me because we
- 59:46Speaker 10: wanted to make sure that medical personnel seemed like heroes
- 59:48Speaker 10: and the job seemed like fun.
- 59:50Speaker 5: And I just was talking to the real JD last
- 59:53Speaker 5: night and his wife Dolly, who Elliott's based on, and
- 59:58Speaker 5: their favorite thing is is to consider you know that
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: they might have had a tiny part in some people
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: kind of embracing medicine as a career because it means
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: so much to them. That's A and B for those
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: of you that are just listening that you can't see
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: Steph could easily have played Elliott, just so you guys know,
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: she's elliot S. She's elliot S both in her mannerisms
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: and her appearance. And I almost, by the way, this
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: is the thing that I have to watch out for
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: late in life because I'm much older than all these people.
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: But I almost said, I am here talking to a
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: young Sarah Chalk. But Sarah Chalk is still very young,
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: So I did not say.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: That Sarah is not an old person at all.
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: Yes, my mad school friends all tell me, all the
- 1:00:43Speaker 6: ones that watch Scrubs religiously are all like you have
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: the same luck that she does. When you guys, did
- 1:00:49Speaker 6: the episode of Sarah Chalk, how like the crazy stories
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: that come out of nowhere.
- 1:00:53Speaker 9: You're like, there's no way that happened to you on
- 1:00:55Speaker 9: a Monday.
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: That's me, Like, yeah, I was watching that. I think
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: that that that story that Zach and Donald told led
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: us to write a story in which he bought a
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: new car. In every thirty seconds, someone someone took another
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: door off.
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: That would happen to Sarah.
- 1:01:12Speaker 6: The best part of that episode is when the grumpy
- 1:01:15Speaker 6: radiologists like, thanks for stopping by and don't forget your.
- 1:01:18Speaker 9: Car doors, Like I did.
- 1:01:24Speaker 6: You know what?
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: You're a real fan. This will make you laugh. And
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: I don't even know if Donald and Zach remember it.
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: Different things from different episodes would stick on set and
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: people would say them over and over and I never
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: could predict what it was. And I don't know Zach Donald,
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: if you guys remember what it was from this one.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: But it was a made up flavor of smoothie that
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: you guys kept saying for weeks.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: Orange goo go.
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: Wait which episode I remember that?
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: What flavor do you want? I'll have a Frasberry olist
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: an orange goo go. I believe that.
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: I believe Bill.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I believe that came from in the writer's rooms, you'd
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: have the assistance do like a smoothie run and you'd
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: all be like calling out weird jama juice flavors where
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: you make.
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: Up fake flavors and just to torture the poor young
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: people working on hourly waves. Yeah, and so that orange
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: goo go orange with.
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: Immunity.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: All right, stuff, we're taking this.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Come on, come on your time, it's your time. Stuff,
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: it's your time.
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: It's your time.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: Stuff. Goonies go ahead. Stuff.
- 1:02:28Speaker 6: So it's actually kind of perfect that Bill is here
- 1:02:31Speaker 6: on this episode because it kind of relates to the
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: behind the scenes part of it. But since I watched
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: the show so much, a lot of the times when
- 1:02:38Speaker 6: I'm studying, i'll recognize words that will like remind me
- 1:02:42Speaker 6: of certain scenes of the show. And I know you
- 1:02:45Speaker 6: guys talked about like trying to make it really medically accurate.
- 1:02:48Speaker 6: It is reverifying, but it's also really funny, which I
- 1:02:53Speaker 6: think is hard to do with medical vernacular if you're
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: not really used to it. So I was wondering if
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: there is a specific member of the writing team that was,
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: you know, kind of crucial in making the medical scenes,
- 1:03:08Speaker 6: specifically the funny ones, because I think it would be
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: kind of hard to write if you didn't have that
- 1:03:12Speaker 6: medical knowledge.
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: I'm going to give props to First of all, we
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: have actors and actresses that can sell comedy, and they
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: were great. But the real JD is, as I can
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: tell by your persona, he is a guy that I
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: would not have been surprised if he went into comedy writing.
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: He was funny, and so for me it was it'd
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: be interesting to even go back to all his memories.
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: But I remember him talking about pimping, you know, when
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: you get grilled with questions and rounds, and he would
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: be like, I was never ready. I always felt, you know,
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: like I was a deer in the headlights. And then
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: just from him saying that, you know, I was like, oh,
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: JD's gonna be a deer in the headlights when they
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: ask him a question, you know what I mean? And
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: I would bet stuff that you when you go through
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: all this stuff, we'll meet it with humor and banter,
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: because if you don't, I think you go crazy. So
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: I give him the props for it, and the performers
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: the propsport because they'd find ways to make it funny.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: You know, Bill, did JD ever like overstep the line
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: and he's like, hey, Bill, I got an episode for you.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Here's what's going to happen.
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: Yeah, And they did two things. One, he and Dolly
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: once said, hey, we got bored because we were both
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: sick and stayed in all weekend. We wrote an episode
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: and I was like, oh my god.
- 1:04:27Speaker 7: I was like yeah, and of course I'll look at it.
- 1:04:30Speaker 7: And then they're like, no, we're not going to show
- 1:04:31Speaker 7: it to you.
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: We forget it. We don't want to do that right,
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: which was super cool.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: It's probably brilliant and in the movie version would be
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: like the most brilliant script ever written, I know.
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: And then the other thing was to answer Steph's question.
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: We would sometimes work backwards, you know, which was really
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: hard because for.
- 1:04:48Speaker 7: Him, because I'd go, I want to do this funny moment.
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: We need you to say something that would cause this
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: guy to not have a sense of smell and not
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: blah blah blah, and it can't be soious enough that
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: I have to worry about whether or not he died.
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: And he should still be conscious and be able to
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: talk because he has to talk in the scene. And
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: Jad would be like, dude, this is worse than med school. Homework.
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: This is impossible, hard one.
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: Speaking of speaking of funny medical dragon, uh, it's pronounced
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: annal Jesus.
- 1:05:19Speaker 9: I can't believe you said that. Literally, I had to
- 1:05:22Speaker 9: give a talk to my like med school.
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: It was one of our small groups, and they were
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: talking about how it's so important to be able to
- 1:05:29Speaker 6: articulate in kind of Layman's terms, what you're talking about.
- 1:05:33Speaker 6: And I was like, yeah, there's a scene of Scrubs
- 1:05:36Speaker 6: where Turk has to explain that anal jesick is like
- 1:05:39Speaker 6: not the same as anal jesis put it in your
- 1:05:42Speaker 6: bite and that. Everyone was like, I mean, yeah, I
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: guess that works. That was.
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: On my top ten jokes that I did not write
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: that I wish I could take credit for. That's such
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: a funny joke.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: Manil Goldman, whatever you do, I'm not gonna it.
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: Really bums me out. I think that might have even
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: been Arsist or Gabby I don't even know, or Hobert.
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: It sounds like a Tim Hobert choke too.
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: All right, Steph, you got another question.
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: Yeah, it's kind of piggybacks off of the first one
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: a little bit. So you guys talked about early on
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: in your episodes that you kind of work to develop
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: this character and figure out what kind of mannerisms you
- 1:06:19Speaker 6: wanted and all that kind of stuff. It really shows
- 1:06:22Speaker 6: throughout the progression of this season they kind of grow
- 1:06:25Speaker 6: into those character traits while also still growing as people.
- 1:06:28Speaker 6: But I find that they're really kind of congruent with
- 1:06:31Speaker 6: how you would expect that person to act as a clinician.
- 1:06:35Speaker 9: And I was wondering if the kind.
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: Of character that you developed influenced the way that the
- 1:06:39Speaker 6: writers wrote scenes of how you practiced medicine.
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: Like later on, I'll set Donald and Zach up to
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: talk about this, but I'll tell you my philosophy of
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: running a TV show is ook. They were talking about
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: show running earlier. So your question's awesome because it means
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: a lot to me that it felt that way to you.
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: Because when I teach sometimes like the I teach the
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: Writers Guild for kids running shows for the first time
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: and stuff I said. The most successful shows, in my mind,
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: when you write the pilot and come up with it,
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: and actors and actresses don't exist there. The characters belong
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: to you. You invented them, and then you cast these people.
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: And when you do the pilot the first episode. For
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: it to be great, it's got to be a partnership.
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: You know, it's half mine and half yours. But then
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: for a show to work, ownership you have to stop
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: being a control freak, and ownership has to go to
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: the actors and actresses playing the parts. And so I
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: would ask Donald and Zach, you know at this point
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: in the show where they said it, you know, because
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: what would happen is it's really cool. Eventually, on good shows,
- 1:07:42Speaker 5: people start coming up to you and going, I don't
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: think my character would say it this way? Or are
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: you sure this is how my character would react in
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: this moment, or should my character be more like this?
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: And you on shows that are working, you have to listen,
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: and I did you guys eventually kind of feel like
- 1:07:58Speaker 5: those characters were yours?
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: You know, I definitely felt.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: I definitely felt like Turk became if not I became Turk,
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: or Turk became me. I definitely at some point everything
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: it just seemed like I was living life on camera
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: at some point. And what really helped me, though, was
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: you realizing medical jargon wasn't my strength.
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: And once you realized that, right, and once you realized
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: that and made Turk just a scalpel jockey.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: It freed me, you know what I mean.
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: And I didn't have to worry about having to say
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: certain things, you know what I mean, drink up. I
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: didn't have to worry about saying certain things, whereas Zach
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: and Sarah would say and Johnny would say things, and
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: I'd be like, I'm so happy I don't have to
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: do that.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: I remember being in the makeup chair in the morning
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: and being like looking through the sides and being like,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: oh no, Donald's got a medical jargon monologue.
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: Those are just lunch is going to be late today.
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: Yeah, those would be the worst. Those would be the
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: worst days. But once Bill was like, I'm not going
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: to give you medical jargon anymore.
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: Churk knows it, he just doesn't like to use it.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: Right, life became so much easier.
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: It's a good question, though, because do you guys eventually
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: even would start riffing your own lies, and I gladly
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: would use them because they knew their characters and how
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: they would react and what they would say and didn't
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: bother me at all. It made me happy. And you're
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: you know, even getting.
- 1:09:26Speaker 7: To talk to the same way. Getting to talk to
- 1:09:27Speaker 7: you makes me happy.
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: I One of the things I momentos I have on
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: my wall in my office from Scrubs is from a
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: med student Steph, who pulled an answer it rounds out
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: of their ass because they remembered a chunk of dialogue
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: on our show. And they said the attending was so
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: blown away because it was a question they shouldn't have
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: known the answer to, you know what I mean.
- 1:09:46Speaker 6: And I said the same things about her med students
- 1:09:49Speaker 6: that like all of the fact like trivia that people
- 1:09:52Speaker 6: don't really they're not supposed to remember, you know, years
- 1:09:55Speaker 6: into practice because it just is you never see it.
- 1:09:58Speaker 6: She was like, yeah, all the med students know it
- 1:10:00Speaker 6: because scrubs.
- 1:10:01Speaker 5: That what kind of what kind of doctor do you
- 1:10:06Speaker 5: want to be? Stuff?
- 1:10:07Speaker 9: I'm leaning towards surgery, but we'll see opened anything.
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: I think it's really really neat. You know that you're
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: doing that, and uh, it's a gig that's of service.
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: It's like being a teacher. It's awesome and the most
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: important jobs to be of service. I think like teacher, soldier,
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: a physician, and of course comedy writer.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: I would think right, not at all all, Right, Steph
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: thank you so much. That was amazing questions and also
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: really inspired us. I mean, you made us all feel
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: like we we may have inspired we you know, we
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: inspired at least one person per Medicine a lot.
- 1:10:41Speaker 6: A lot. Let me.
- 1:10:42Speaker 9: Yeah, you guys have a huge medical fan base.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: Well, good luck with that.
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: Promise me that you'll dress up and you'll dress up
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: as Elliott for at least one Halloween, oh yeah, every Halloween.
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: And whoever, if you have friends that go as Turk
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: for Halloween, tell them please no black face.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: Make sure they're really black because Donald might cringe.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: No, they don't even have to be black if you
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: just don't paint your face right.
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: Okay, but Donald and I cringe every Halloween when people
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: tag us on Instagram like excitedly like Turk and GD
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: for Halloween. And still in twenty twenty, there's still people
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: painting their faces brown and black and it's horrible.
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: Although we did it a lot on scrips.
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: Yeh. By the way, one of the many things that
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: doesn't hold up in retrospect on the show the a stuff.
- 1:11:35Speaker 5: Good luck with all this stuff, and.
- 1:11:39Speaker 9: Hi, Vic and Hayden, hope you guys are jealous.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: Turn it off.
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: Turn it off, you guys, turn it off.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: Steph thought she was just gonna sneak into Vic and
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: Hayden a quick thing, but I think we should just
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: keep talking about Vic and Hayes.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: I like Vic, but I don't like Hayden.
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: I don't like it at all.
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: I want their shout out to go awry.
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: Vick and Hayden shout out. Now, yeah, I want let's uh,
- 1:12:08Speaker 5: let's do a Vic and Hayden episode.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: Okay, we should so at four forty four, guys, what's
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: happening before? At four forty four, what's happening is cow?
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: We haven't talked about this episode at all.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: Oh yeah, here's what I like.
- 1:12:21Speaker 7: We've talked about the Sarah story both with Steph and.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: We jumped around.
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: We jumped around, and we talked about.
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: The Neil, but we haven't talked about the Judy and
- 1:12:29Speaker 7: Zach story.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: We're gonna get into it, and we're gonna get into it,
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: you know. But listen, Donald Bill Laurin's episodes, they are
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: always going to be long because he brings a lot
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: to the table, and he's.
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: No, I'm not complaining. I'm not complaining about the length
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: of the episode. I'm just saying some people. Some people
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: want to listen to a rewatch podcast and actually rewatch
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: the show, well.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: Then they should listen to a different show. We happened
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: to we happened to Meander. At four forty four, What's
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Happening is mentioned for the first time.
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: Okay, you don't need to start banging.
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: I did I bang the table?
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: I banged the table on that. I'm sorry? Why am
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: I yelling?
- 1:13:03Speaker 5: What happens?
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: At four forty four, What's Happening is mentioned for the
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: very first time on Scrubs.
- 1:13:08Speaker 5: Oh yeah, and you guys did the dance and we
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: don't even idea it really, She says, it's not that
- 1:13:13Speaker 5: great a show. You just expected people to know what
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: we were talking about. And that's such an old reference.
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: I know.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: And nowadays kids don't even know the glory of what's
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: happening unless you're our age.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: Hey, hey, the glory of what's happening or what's happening now?
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: I know, do you remember what?
- 1:13:29Speaker 6: Now?
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: What's happening?
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: Now?
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Surely owned the restaurant.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: They all grew up and now d is not just
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: a small character. She's like the star.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: No, she was the star I think because she was
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: the star.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: Everybody came back.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: I didn't like what's happening now as much as what's happening.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: What's happening is.
- 1:13:47Speaker 7: I just liked We Runs dance, and I liked the
- 1:13:50Speaker 7: moment you guys did for me, which is forever.
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: I liked, hey, hey, hey, what's happening?
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Hey hey hey?
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: Do you remember in the opening credits when they made
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: they left rerun and he's driving the street and then
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: reruns just running after the pickup truck.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: That's rude that they did that.
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: I know they were making they were making fun of
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: me heavy.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: Said guy, making fun of the heavy set guy.
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: But watching me run chase after that truck was funny.
- 1:14:26Speaker 5: Come on, this sure was because he had suspenders on.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Yeah, well that that and the hat and the and
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: the same red His outfit never changed.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: Do you remember the episode where Roger decided he was
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: going to be a nude model.
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: My favorite thing that's happening right now is you guys said,
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: we haven't talked about the show yet, and then you're going,
- 1:14:46Speaker 5: do you remember the episode of What's Happening? By the way,
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: And if I was like if I was like at
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: ten fifteen and that what's happening episode.
- 1:14:54Speaker 7: That's the first time that surely says.
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: I just remember. I'm well, you can go back to
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: the show, but I just remember that there was an episode.
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: Where Roger was doing nude modeling for artists, you know,
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: when they like paint the nude model. And I remember
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: thinking as a child, like this is scandalous. Roger's gonna
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: take off his clothes, like that's crazy.
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: Okay, let's get back into the show. Okay, So let's
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: talk about the JD and Carla storyline, which is a
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: very interesting storyline because at the beginning of the show,
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: you guys are really clicking and grooving. One reason because
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: your best friend and his now girlfriend are always you know,
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: we live together, or your roommate and his girlfriend always around,
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: and so you guys have developed a relationship and because.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: Of that, you're a dynamic duo of your own.
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: You know what I mean.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: She doesn't work, drink up, she doesn't work for you.
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: But you guys are a team that is very, very
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: very cohesive, and you go along and you fuck it
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: up by becoming judgmental.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: Right, Well, I'm feeling every one is being condescending to
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: me and I and I'm starting to become a good doctor.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: I'm starting to get my groove. I'm starting to know
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: what's happening.
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: And and also.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: Okay go on, and and and I just you know,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: like like someone does you lose he loses his temper,
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: and of course he loses his temper at the worst
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: person possible, his teammate. Uh, Carlo.
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: Yeah, this was also a product the reason I wrote
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: this is is interesting, the product of two things. One,
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: all the nurses that were nice enough to give us interviews.
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: You know, one of the stories that you saw was
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: the nurses are essentially the last line of training, you know,
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: for a lot of these medical students and residents and
- 1:16:42Speaker 5: interns and stuff, because when you first show up, you
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: know more than they do even say it in the show,
- 1:16:46Speaker 5: than the training.
- 1:16:47Speaker 7: Kicks in and the dynamics ships, and you know, so
- 1:16:51Speaker 7: many of them ultimately.
- 1:16:55Speaker 5: Told us that it's so interesting how to navigate that,
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: because you know, there is an air of superiority to
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: some doctors, you know, when they get to that point,
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: and it messes up that dynamic, you know. And I
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: wanted to combine that in my personal life. My mom's family,
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: my mom and then me were the first two in
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: her side of a family to go to college, you know,
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: and then you always kind of enter these dynamics of like, oh,
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: you know, you think you're smarter than me because you
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: actually went on to secondary education and did that stuff.
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: And you know, as you get older, you realize that
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: doesn't have anything to do with anything. You know, At
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: this point in my life, I know tons of geniuses
- 1:17:37Speaker 5: that didn't finish high school and tons of you know,
- 1:17:40Speaker 5: grad school graduates. They're the dumbest people alive, do you
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: know what I mean? But around youthful things that kind
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: of carries there. And my favorite part of that stuff
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: was her challenging you to admit it and you actually
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: admitting it, you know what I mean? And that was
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: what enabled you guys still to be friends.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: In that scene was really I mean, Judy's I'm just
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: you know, the straight man in that scene. Her her
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: performance in that rain outside the bus I thought was
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: just incredible. She did such a beautiful job and it
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: was heartbreaking. Still to this day, I'm watching it and
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: was so moved by by by by how heartfelt and
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: open she was.
- 1:18:17Speaker 5: Uh and uh, I wrote down because this is what
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: we wanted to do that people didn't understand it comedy
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: of comedy at the time, and why Judy Rays was
- 1:18:25Speaker 5: so perfect, you know, because there weren't a lot of
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: dramedies on. And one of my favorite jokes in this
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: episode was when before you get off the bus, she's
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: leaving and she's like, I'm so mad at you and
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: you said you can't you forgave me.
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: You can't just change your mind, And without selling it
- 1:18:43Speaker 7: as a joke, she's like, have.
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: You never met a woman before? And she walks out
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: into the rain, you.
- 1:18:48Speaker 6: Know what I mean.
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: And it wasn't read like a punchline. It was read like, yeah,
- 1:18:52Speaker 5: you can still be funny in drama and amongst pathos
- 1:18:56Speaker 5: when you're feeling bad. And that was like the tonal stuff.
- 1:18:59Speaker 5: That's why she's so good man, because she's always so real,
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: very very very good actors.
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I look back at it like I had no
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: clue how much of a power how she was or
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: or is I should say, And when I watched these episodes,
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: you know, I said it in our first podcast, her
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: and Ken, Wow, really they're really MVPs of our show,
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: you know what I mean?
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: Drink up?
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: They can just you don't get actor.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: You don't have to tell people to drink when you say,
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: you know what, I'm just I know they're just gonna
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: do it.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: I'm bringing I'm bringing it to my attention that I
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: said it.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: This is the most you've ever done, by the way
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: you went from the previous episode being conscious of it
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: and doing none to this one doing like thirty I
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: you know what I mean.
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: I probably said it several times in the last episode. Also,
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: this episode is also about how how important your name is,
- 1:19:54Speaker 3: regardless of if it's Bambi or JD or your reputation
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: or Scooter, whatever it is you have. Reputation is very
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: important and you only get one chance to make a
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: first impression and after that people will have judgments of
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: who they think you are.
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: And this episode really touches on that.
- 1:20:15Speaker 5: Here's the thing I screwed up in this episode off
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: what Donald and Sam bothers me. What doctor Cox's character
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: does to JD, you know, of shaming him was so
- 1:20:26Speaker 5: bad that it bummed me out that he never got
- 1:20:29Speaker 5: his comeuppance for that, you know what I mean, because
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: you didn't tell her to go protect you. And then
- 1:20:32Speaker 5: he makes everybody stop and goes we're all to be
- 1:20:35Speaker 5: super special to this little flower, you know, And I
- 1:20:38Speaker 5: thought that was so egregiously mean, you know what I mean.
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: But his character, I guess was flawed. But we should
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: have gotten him, have him make amends for that or
- 1:20:47Speaker 5: get thumped for that.
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: But Boxing Fantasy was pretty funny, though Johnny stil oiled.
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: I'm not to say, holy cow, how oil did he
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: have on?
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: There was a lot of oil. I remember, it was
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: a lot of Crisco.
- 1:20:59Speaker 5: I watched it with Christa, who had to do all
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: her romance scenes with Johnny c and uh and she
- 1:21:05Speaker 5: will eventually, you know, be on your You're so nice
- 1:21:07Speaker 5: about her too. He came he came on as a
- 1:21:13Speaker 5: punching bag, and she was half asleep through upstairs in
- 1:21:16Speaker 5: the room and she goes, uh, half drowsy. Here comes
- 1:21:20Speaker 5: old up.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: That he is just just glistening with Johnny has a
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: full bottle of criscal oil.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: Let's be honest, he's ripped. He looks amazing.
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: I think it's drawn on. Oh you know what I
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: wanted to say, and I wanted to tell me if
- 1:21:37Speaker 5: you guys thought this in real life. When I say
- 1:21:40Speaker 5: that is what I wrote. Last thing, I wrote down
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: about Judy.
- 1:21:43Speaker 7: Would I say, like, when you get really lucky, it's
- 1:21:45Speaker 7: not the.
- 1:21:45Speaker 5: Writing or anything else, it's all it's everything, and the
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: casting people have to really nail you know, these characters
- 1:21:51Speaker 5: and be who they are. And the amazing thing watching
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: Judy back then, you guys, Zach and Donald were such kids,
- 1:21:58Speaker 5: and Sarah Sarah's character, and Sarah felt like a kid
- 1:22:03Speaker 5: and Judy and this is one of the reasons I
- 1:22:05Speaker 5: think the show works. She was not significantly She's essentially
- 1:22:09Speaker 5: the same age as all you guys, but she seemed
- 1:22:12Speaker 5: like such a grown up even.
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: From the start, definitely way more mature than we were.
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: You know, and seemed like such an adult that it
- 1:22:19Speaker 5: made the show work. Of like, oh, one of these
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: four is you know, old for her years and an
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: adult already, whereas Judy is, you know, she could have
- 1:22:28Speaker 5: easily on a different show been Elliott or been you know,
- 1:22:31Speaker 5: the little kid, you know.
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: And so it was was she like that in real
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: life or she was good man in real life?
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: Judy was way more mature than the three of us.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: I think we were. We were just as silly and
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: goofy as our characters, and you know, Judy was funny
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: and would play along with us, but I think she
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: was definitely more mature than us.
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: By the way, there's a really funny there's a really
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: funny fuck up bill at twelve oh three. When Donald
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: runs into the room that Kelso's lured him to, you
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: could totally see a hand that's all come in and
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: it's on the floor and it's holding the door open.
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: And it made me think, now we paint sh like
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: that out. I know, I know nowadays we just you know,
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: painted out, but it made me think it was probably
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: Patrick Bolton or something lying on the floor.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: Patrick shout out, Patrick Bolton.
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: Patrick Bolton was the on set track.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: It has wheels, that thing will be on set.
- 1:23:20Speaker 5: I enjoyed after hearing the interesting thing you guys posted
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: about eating. I think I've never seen the two of
- 1:23:26Speaker 5: you do more eating in an episode. Zach having a
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: jam a cupcake in your mouth, Donald just wolf and sandwich.
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: Did you guys really eat that stuff or were you
- 1:23:33Speaker 5: just spitting it out as soon as they said cut.
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: I do love a sandwich.
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie, and a cupcake doesn't count. But
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: if someone says we need you to jam this cupcake
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: in your mouth. You're gonna do it.
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: I mean, that's your excuse. Also was that it was
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: that cheap cupcake.
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: What are those called hostess cupcakes?
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: That was a dang Listen. I'll tell you something right now.
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: You put some cold cuts, some cheese in between some
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: hero that sounds delicious to me. You could put some
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: lettuce tomato on it. I'll eat that shit.
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: And another another strike at the janitor not speaking to
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: anyone in season one, Bill, is that he clearly has
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: told doctor Cox to call me Scooter at the end.
- 1:24:12Speaker 5: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:24:14Speaker 7: He never ever spoke to anybody except JD.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: And Donald and I have been going through like detectives
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: going so we're trying to keep the janitor Laura alive
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: for season one. But the facts, the facts are, the
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: facts are problematic.
- 1:24:26Speaker 4: The facts are problematic.
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: Bill doesn't We've done all the work, just like Turkleton,
- 1:24:31Speaker 5: there was just okay.
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: So in your mind, Bill, hit your rationalization button. How
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: does Cox know to call me Scooter?
- 1:24:41Speaker 7: It's just a random coincidence.
- 1:24:43Speaker 5: Nicknames.
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: I love it.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: I really want this to be a running gag that
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: Donald and I do the detective work to see how
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: the janitor talks to other people.
- 1:24:55Speaker 5: The only one I think you've ever seen him speak
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: to is Elliott in that thing when they're all walking
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: up to each other. Mad.
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: Yes, yes, well she speaks to him. He doesn't necessarily
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: speak to her.
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: The exact exactly.
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: That might not have even been a janitor she made Mad.
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: This is just a lens.
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: The last thing I wanted to, last thing I've.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: Ever you know what, And you're absolutely right.
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: Actually, the very next person at the janitor, the very
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: next person that's attacked after Elliott, uh does that to
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: the janitor is JD.
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: So it could be it could be that that one's that.
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: One's imaginary and Elliott was talking to an intern or
- 1:25:32Speaker 5: inn order or something or.
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: No, that's a possibility.
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: Or she's just not even talking to anyone. There's no
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: one there and she's just saying it.
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: Yeah, it's very fight clubby.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: The last thing I want to say is this, they
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: went overboard with the filters on Sarah in the bathtub,
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: because it's like Barbara Walters, you could barely see her
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: through filters, and and she's in like this most enormous
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: fucking bathroom, and I was thinking, like, why does Elliott,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: But then I remember it is doesn't Elliot supposed to
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: have money from her parents.
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: Her parents are paid Elliott's in like the bathroom of
- 1:26:01Speaker 4: a millionaire's house.
- 1:26:03Speaker 5: It was subtext that we had planned for and a
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: lot of it got cut, but it eventually pays off.
- 1:26:09Speaker 5: When she tells her dad she doesn't want to go
- 1:26:11Speaker 5: into a female specialty and he stops paying for her life,
- 1:26:15Speaker 5: so she has to move in with you. She loses
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: her whole apartment. She works, was at that apartment. She's like,
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: this place is big.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: She works at the clinic, she starts working at the clinic.
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: All of that stuff. I remember, Well, thank you, sorry, audience,
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: we've done.
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: Yeah, audience, we we went all over the place today,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: but we're so excited.
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: We made about a bunch of talks and nurses.
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: Said, he's a story natural. So yanda here yea
