Transcript
- 0:00Today we begin the book of Isaiah,
- 0:03and Isaiah has 66 chapters.
- 0:07It's sort of like it's the whole Bible all in one book.
- 0:11There are 66 books in the Bible and 66 chapters
- 0:15in the book of Isaiah. Isaiah lived during the time when
- 0:20Israel was about to be taken into captivity and go into exile to Babylon,
- 0:25and his job as a prophet was to warn the people about
- 0:29this impending judgment to see if their hearts might turn and
- 0:33they might repent. So he saw the downfall of
- 0:36the nation, but he also gave many,
- 0:39many promises of hope and consolation and
- 0:44comfort. Join us today as we begin the book of Isaiah.
- 0:48Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is September 8th.
- 0:53Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in
- 0:56one year. This week we are reading from the Israel Bible for
- 1:00the Old Testament and from the King James for the New Testament.
- 1:05Deuteronomy 22:16-30.
- 1:11And the girl's father shall say to the elders, I gave this man my daughter
- 1:15to wife, but he has taken an aversion to her. So he has made
- 1:19up charges, saying, I did not find your daughter a virgin.
- 1:22But here is the evidence of my daughter's virginity. And they shall spread
- 1:27out the cloth before the elders of the town. The elders of that
- 1:31town shall then take the man and flog him, and they shall fine him
- 1:34100 shekels of silver and give it to the girl's
- 1:38father, for the man has defamed a virgin in Israel.
- 1:42Moreover, she shall remain his wife; he shall never have the right
- 1:47to divorce her. But if the charge proves true, the girl was found
- 1:51not to have been a virgin, then the girl shall be brought
- 1:55out to the entrance of her father's house, and the men of her town shall
- 1:59stone her to death, for she did a shameful thing in Israel,
- 2:02committing fornication while under her father's authority.
- 2:07Thus you will sweep away evil from your midst.
- 2:11If a man is found lying with another man's wife, both of them,
- 2:15the man and the woman with whom he lay, shall die.
- 2:18Thus you will sweep away evil from Israel.
- 2:23In the case of a virgin who is engaged to a man, if a man
- 2:27comes upon her in town and lies with her, you shall take
- 2:31the two of them out to the gate of that town and stone them to
- 2:33death, the girl because she did not cry for help in the town,
- 2:38and the man because he violated another man's wife.
- 2:42Thus you will sweep away evil from your midst.
- 2:47But if the man comes upon the engaged girl in the open country,
- 2:51and the man lies with her by force, only the man
- 2:54who lay with her shall die, but you shall do nothing to the girl.
- 2:59The girl did not incur the death penalty, for this case is like
- 3:03that of a man attacking another and murdering him.
- 3:07He came upon her in the open. Though the engaged girl cried
- 3:11for help, there was no one to save her.
- 3:14If a man comes upon a virgin who is not engaged and he seizes
- 3:18her and lies with her and they are discovered,
- 3:22the man who lay with her shall pay the girl's father 50 shekels
- 3:25of silver and she shall be his wife.
- 3:28Because he has violated her, he can never have the right to divorce
- 3:32her.
- 3:37Isaiah 1:1-2:22.
- 3:46The prophecies of Isaiah son of Amoz, who prophesied concerning Judah
- 3:50and Jerusalem in the reigns of Uzziah,
- 3:53Jotham, Achaz,
- 3:56Jehoiakim, and kings of Judah. Hear,
- 3:59O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for Hashem has spoken: I
- 4:04reared children and brought them up, and they have rebelled
- 4:08against Me. An ox knows its owner, a donkey its master's
- 4:12crib; Israel does not know, My people takes no thought.
- 4:16Ah, sinful nation, people laden with iniquity,
- 4:21brood of vipers, depraved children! They have
- 4:24forsaken Hashem and spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs
- 4:28on Him. Why do you seek further
- 4:32beatings that you continue to offend? Every head is
- 4:36ailing and every heart is sick. From head to foot
- 4:40no spot is found. All bruises and
- 4:43welts and festering sores, not pressed out, not bound up,
- 4:47not softened with oil. Your land is
- 4:51a waste. Your cities burnt down before your eyes.
- 4:55The yield of your soil is consumed by strangers. A wasteland
- 5:00as overthrown by strangers. Bare Zion
- 5:03is left like a booth in a vineyard, like a hut in a cucumber field,
- 5:07like a city beleaguered. Had not the Lord of Hosts left
- 5:11us some survivors, we should be like Sodom,
- 5:15another Gomorrah. Hear the word of Hashem, you chiefs
- 5:18of Sodom. Give ear to our God's instruction,
- 5:22you folk of Gomorrah.
- 5:25What need have I of all your sacrifices? says Hashem.
- 5:29I am sated with burnt offerings of rams and sway of fatlings
- 5:33and blood of bulls, and I have no delight in lambs and
- 5:37he-goats. That you come to appear before
- 5:40me, who asked that of you? Trample my courts no more.
- 5:44Bringing oblations is futile. Incense is offensive to me.
- 5:48New moon and Shabbat, proclaiming of solemnities,
- 5:52assemblies with iniquity, I cannot abide. Your new
- 5:55moons and fixed seasons fill me with loathing.
- 5:59They are become a burden to me. I cannot endure
- 6:03them. And when you lift up your
- 6:06hands, I will turn my eyes away from you. Though you pray
- 6:10at length, I will not listen. Your hands are stained with crime.
- 6:14Wash yourselves clean. Put your evil doings away from My sight.
- 6:19Cease to do evil. Learn to do good.
- 6:23Devote yourselves to justice and the wronged.
- 6:27Uphold the rights of the orphan. Defend the cause of the widow.
- 6:31Come, let us reach an understanding, says Hashem.
- 6:36Though your sins be like crimson, they can turn snow
- 6:39white. Be they red as dyed wool, they can become
- 6:43like fleece. If then you agree and give heed,
- 6:47you will eat the good things of the earth. But if you refuse
- 6:50and disobey, you will be devoured by the sword.
- 6:54For it was Hashem who spoke: Alas, she has become
- 6:58a harlot, the faithful city that was filled with justice, where righteousness
- 7:03dwelt. But now murderers, Your silver has turned to dross,
- 7:07your wine is cut with water. Your rulers are rogues
- 7:10and cronies of thieves, everyone avid for presents and greedy
- 7:14for gifts. They do not judge the case of the orphan,
- 7:18and the widow's cause never reaches them.
- 7:20Assuredly, this is the declaration of the Sovereign, the Lord
- 7:25of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: Ah, I will get satisfaction
- 7:29from my foes, I will wreak vengeance on my enemies!
- 7:34I will turn My hand against you and smelt out your dross as with lye
- 7:38and remove all your slag. I will restore your
- 7:41magistrates as of old and your counselors as of yore.
- 7:45After that you shall be called City of Righteousness, Faithful City.
- 7:50Zion shall be saved in the judgment, her repentant
- 7:54ones in the retribution. But rebels and sinners shall all be
- 7:58crushed, and those who forsake Hashem shall perish. Truly,
- 8:02you shall be shamed because of the terebinths you desired,
- 8:06and you shall be confounded because of the gardens you coveted.
- 8:09For you shall be like a terebinth wilted of leaf, and like
- 8:13a garden that has no water. Stored wealth shall become as
- 8:17tow, and he who amassed it a spark,
- 8:21and the two shall burn together with none to quench.
- 8:27The word that Isaiah son of Amoz prophesied concerning Judah
- 8:31and Jerusalem: In the days to come, the mount
- 8:35of Hashem's house shall stand firm above the
- 8:39mountains and tower above the hills, and all the nations shall
- 8:43gaze on it with joy. And the many peoples shall go and say,
- 8:47Come, let us go up to the mountain of Hashem,
- 8:51to the house of the God of Jacob. That He may instruct us
- 8:54in His ways, and that we may walk in His paths.
- 8:58For instruction shall come forth from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
- 9:05Thus He will judge among the nations and arbitrate for the many peoples,
- 9:09and they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning
- 9:13hooks. Nation shall not take up sword against nation;
- 9:17they shall never again know war. O House of Jacob, come,
- 9:22let us walk by the light of Hashem. For you have
- 9:25forsaken the ways of your people, O House of Jacob.
- 9:29For they are full of practices from the east and of soothsaying
- 9:33like the Philistines. They abound in customs of the aliens.
- 9:38Their land is full of silver and gold, there is no
- 9:41limit to their treasures. Their land is full of horses,
- 9:45There is no limit to their chariots, and their land is full
- 9:48of idols. They bow down to the work of their hands,
- 9:52to what their own fingers have wrought. But man shall be humbled
- 9:57and mortal brought low. Oh, do not forgive them! Go deep
- 10:01into the rock, bury yourselves in the ground before the terror of Hashem and
- 10:06his dread majesty. Man's haughty look shall be brought
- 10:10low and the pride of mortals shall be humbled. None but Hashem shall
- 10:14be exalted in that day. For the LORD of hosts has ready a
- 10:18day against all that is proud and arrogant,
- 10:21against all that is lofty, so that it is brought
- 10:25low; against all the cedars of Lebanon, tall and
- 10:28stately, and all the oaks of Bashan; against all the high
- 10:32mountains and all the lofty hills; against every soaring tower
- 10:36and every mighty wall; against all the ships of Tarshish
- 10:40and all the gallant barks. Then man's haughtiness
- 10:44shall be humbled and the pride of man brought low.
- 10:48None but Hashem shall be exalted in that day. As for
- 10:52idols, they shall vanish completely,
- 10:56and men shall enter caverns in the rock and
- 10:59hollows in the ground before the terror
- 11:03of Hashem and his dread majesty when He comes forth
- 11:07to overawe the earth. On that day
- 11:11men shall fling away to the flying foxes and the bats the
- 11:14idols of silver and the idols of gold which they made
- 11:18for worshiping, and they shall enter the clefts in the rocks and the
- 11:22crevices in the cliffs before the terror of Hashem and His dread
- 11:26majesty when He comes forth to overawe the earth.
- 11:31O cease to glorify man, who has only a breath in his
- 11:34nostrils? For by what does he merit esteem?
- 11:422 Corinthians 10:1-18.
- 11:50Now I, Paul, myself beseech you by the meekness and
- 11:54gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you,
- 11:58but but being absent am bold toward you.
- 12:01But I beseech you that I may not be bold when I am present with
- 12:05that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some,
- 12:09which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
- 12:14For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after
- 12:17the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not
- 12:20carnal, but mighty through God
- 12:24to the pulling down of strongholds.
- 12:27Casting down imaginations and every high thing that
- 12:31exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into
- 12:34captivity every thought to the obedience
- 12:39of Christ, and having in a readiness
- 12:43to revenge all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
- 12:47Do you look on things after the outward appearance?
- 12:51If any man trusts to himself that he is Christ's,
- 12:54Let him of himself think this again, that as he is Christ's,
- 12:58even so are we Christ's. For though I should
- 13:01boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord has given us
- 13:06for edification, and not for your destruction, I should
- 13:10not be ashamed, that I may not seem as if I would terrify you
- 13:13by letters. For his letters, say they, are weighty and
- 13:18powerful, but his bodily presence is weak. And his
- 13:22speech contemptible. Let such
- 13:26a one think this, that such as we are in word by
- 13:30letters when we are absent, such will we be also
- 13:34in deed when we are present. For we dare not make ourselves of
- 13:38the number or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves.
- 13:42But they measuring themselves by themselves and comparing themselves among
- 13:46themselves are not wise. But we will not
- 13:50boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the
- 13:54rule which God has distributed to us, a measure
- 13:58to reach even unto you. For we stretch not ourselves
- 14:01beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you. For we
- 14:05are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of
- 14:09Christ, not boasting of things without our measure,
- 14:13that is, of other men's labors, but having hope,
- 14:17when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you
- 14:20according to our rule abundantly,
- 14:23to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not
- 14:28to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.
- 14:31But he that glories, let him glory in the Lord. For not he
- 14:36that commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends.
- 14:43Psalm 52.
- 14:471-9. Why do you boast yourself in mischief, O mighty man?
- 14:51The goodness of God endures continually. Your tongue
- 14:55devises mischiefs like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
- 15:00You love evil more than good, and lying rather than to speak
- 15:04righteousness. Selah. You love all devouring
- 15:09words, O deceitful tongue. God shall likewise destroy
- 15:13you forever. He shall take you away and pluck
- 15:17you out of your dwelling place and root you out of the land of the
- 15:20living. Selah. The righteous also shall
- 15:24see and fear and shall laugh at him. Lo,
- 15:28this is the man that made not God his strength but trusted in
- 15:31the abundance of his riches and strengthened himself in
- 15:35his wickedness. But I am like a green olive
- 15:38tree in the house of God. I trust in the mercy of God
- 15:42forever and ever. I will praise you forever,
- 15:45because you have done it, and I will wait on your name, for it is
- 15:49good before your saints.
- 15:54Proverbs 22:26-27.
- 15:58Be not you one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties
- 16:02for debts. If you have nothing to pay, why should he
- 16:06take away your bed from under you? I'd like
- 16:10to speak to you today from the book of Isaiah, and we've just begun the
- 16:13book of Isaiah today. We read chapter 1 and chapter 2,
- 16:17and I want to share with you the introduction to this book from
- 16:21the Israel Bible. It's a very good overview of the book.
- 16:27Isaiah is the first and the longest of the books of the Latter
- 16:32prophets. Isaiah's prophecies are recorded in both prose and poetry,
- 16:37and his imagery is considered among the most beautiful
- 16:40in the Bible. Isaiah prophesies during the reigns
- 16:44of at least 4 kings of Judah in the second half
- 16:47of the 8th century BC: Uzziah,
- 16:52Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah.
- 16:57It appears that his prophecies also continue into the reign of the
- 17:01next king, Manasseh. During his lifetime,
- 17:04Isaiah sees the fortunes of the 2 kingdoms in Israel—
- 17:08Samaria in the north and Judah in the south— decline dramatically.
- 17:13When he begins his prophetic career, the 2 kingdoms live in
- 17:17prosperity, harmony, and stability.
- 17:20Within 50 years, the 10 tribes of the Northern Kingdom are a distant
- 17:24memory, exiled to the edges of the Assyrian Empire
- 17:28in 722 BC. The fortunes
- 17:32of southern kingdom of Judah are only slightly better. Most of
- 17:36its cities are destroyed in the Assyrian invasion of 701 BC.
- 17:41Isaiah is given the task of explaining why the tragedies
- 17:45are occurring and advising what changes need to
- 17:48be made. Although he uttered many pronouncements of rebuke,
- 17:52Isaiah is most well-known for his prophecies of consolation
- 17:56and hope. Despite the bleak circumstances of the
- 18:00present, Isaiah is always able to describe a brighter future
- 18:05which features return and redemption, with the Jewish
- 18:09people living peacefully in their land. These images
- 18:13remain an integral part of Israel's consciousness until
- 18:17today. The political quiet that exists at the beginning
- 18:21of his life is disturbed with the emergence of the rapacious
- 18:25Assyrian Empire in the east. The kings of
- 18:29the region face 2 options: either submit to the might of the Assyrians or
- 18:34attempt to form alliances to oppose the behemoth rising
- 18:38against them. In fact, the kings of Aram
- 18:42and Israel invade Judah in 733 in an attempt to pressure
- 18:47King Ahaz into, into joining their coalition against
- 18:51Assyria. Instead of supporting them,
- 18:54Ahaz chooses to ask the Assyrian King Tiglath-Pileser
- 18:59for assistance, a decision that would prove nearly
- 19:03fatal for the Jewish people. Isaiah condemns this
- 19:07decision. More important to Isaiah, however, is his
- 19:11attempt to change the the people's focus from politics
- 19:15to morality. While they are engaged in political
- 19:19intrigue, the people perform their ritual obligations almost
- 19:23robotically, without passion, and they fail to maintain a
- 19:27just and moral society. Indeed, other prophets
- 19:31among Isaiah's contemporaries— Micah, Hosea, and Amos—
- 19:35also rail against these failures. Their message
- 19:39is clear: if the people can improve their personal lives, live in
- 19:43justice and peace with each other, and serve Hashem with sincerity,
- 19:47then the political turmoil will disappear.
- 19:51The structure of the book reflects these messages. The first section,
- 19:55chapters 1 through 6, serves as an introduction to the entire book,
- 19:59contrasting the present sinful state of the people with
- 20:04the wonderful potential future that awaits them.
- 20:08The next section, chapters 7 through 12,
- 20:11describes the immediate threat of the Assyrian invasion and
- 20:15then its ultimate defeat by a son of David who will bring
- 20:19peace and righteousness to Israel. Chapters 13
- 20:24to 23 describe a series of judgments against the nations,
- 20:28and chapters 24 through 27 describe judgments
- 20:32against Judah. After 8 more
- 20:35chapters discussing the woes of Israel and other nations,
- 20:39there is a 4-chapter historical summary of the events of Isaiah's
- 20:43time, chapters 36 to 39.
- 20:47Finally, there is a long section of prophecies of
- 20:51consolation that spans from the relief
- 20:54of immediate troubles into the future beyond the horizon
- 20:59when the people of Israel will return from exile and
- 21:03dwell again in the land of Israel.
- 21:07And that concludes our introduction overview to the book
- 21:11of Isaiah. We will continue in Isaiah tomorrow.
- 21:15Shalom.
