- 0:02Our physical bodies operate complex functions without active
- 0:06oversight or intervention of the mind.
- 0:09We are essentially in the dark as our organs function, as our
- 0:14immune system automatically responds to pressures, as
- 0:18breathing, brain function and much more go on absent our
- 0:23supervision or control. For the most part, it is true
- 0:28that certain functions can be affected when we turn conscious
- 0:31attention to them. But even this level of
- 0:34intervention is limited and rare.
- 0:37We remain very much at the mercy of the physical systems that
- 0:41operate the habits, instincts and reactive processes that
- 0:47govern our physical lives. We also are generally unaware of
- 0:51how illness enters our system and what, if anything, we can do
- 0:56about it. Internally, we actually utilized
- 1:00the power of the subcontinent when we train our bodies to
- 1:03respond through what is called muscle memory.
- 1:07In fact, the intervention of conscious thought in such a
- 1:11process can be disastrous, as was noted by a world class
- 1:15gymnast who withdrew from a recent Olympic competition when
- 1:20she indicated that her mental process was interfering with the
- 1:24body's trained capacities which led to potential catastrophic
- 1:29results were she to continue in that state.
- 1:34On the level of the life force, we do not generally perceive
- 1:38either the direct active influences pressuring our
- 1:41response on a day-to-day basis, nor the many stored up actions
- 1:46which get triggered by specific sense sights, sounds, events or
- 1:52locations. Much of what we do is based on
- 1:55encapsulated responses stored deep in our memory and only
- 2:00accessible to us for the most part when a triggering event
- 2:04occurs. It was this level of triggered
- 2:07responses and suppressed energies that influence the
- 2:11psychological profile of individuals that interested
- 2:15Freud and LED to his development of his theories of
- 2:19psychotherapy. CG Jung went further to identify
- 2:24a collective unconscious where vital forms, beings, and
- 2:29archetypes were accessible to all human beings and to a great
- 2:34degree govern the way we respond to situations.
- 2:39Similarly, on the mental level, we capture through our senses
- 2:44tremendous amounts of data, most of which does not rise to our
- 2:48conscious awareness. It does, however, impinge upon
- 2:52our mental process and influence decisions we make.
- 2:56We receive subtle influences from our surroundings, from our
- 3:00family, friends, peers, teachers and the society at large and its
- 3:06mores and ways of looking at and evaluating things.
- 3:11Much of our decision making process is in fact guided,
- 3:15directed or controlled by forces about which we tend to have
- 3:20little or no awareness, Shriorobindo observes Quote.
- 3:26The superficial observation of our waking consciousness shows
- 3:29us that of a great part of our individual being and becoming,
- 3:35we are quite ignorant. It is to us the inconscient just
- 3:40as much as the life of the plant, the metal, the earth, the
- 3:43elements. But if we carry our knowledge
- 3:47farther, pushing psychological experiment and observation
- 3:52beyond their normal bounds, we find how vast is the sphere of
- 3:57this supposed inconscient, or this subconscient in our total
- 4:01existence, the subconscient so seeming and so-called by us,
- 4:06because it is a concealed consciousness, and what a small
- 4:11and fragmentary portion of our being is covered by our waking
- 4:15self-awareness, we arrive at the knowledge that our waking mind
- 4:19and ego are only a superimposition upon a submerged
- 4:24A subliminal self. For so that self appears to us,
- 4:29or more accurately an inner being with a much vaster
- 4:33capacity of experience. Our mind and ego are like the
- 4:38crown and Dome of a temple jutting out from the waves while
- 4:42the great body of the building is submerged under the surface
- 4:46of the waters. End Quote Reference Sri
