- 0:03Speaker 1: Jacob went in unto her. Genesis 34 Dear Heavenly Father,
- 0:10Speaker 1: When I am close to my dreams, I will stay
- 0:13Speaker 1: mindful that I don't jump the gun and settle for
- 0:16Speaker 1: a counterfeit like Jacob. Instead, I will stay diligent and
- 0:21Speaker 1: focused so that the dream you have for me will
- 0:24Speaker 1: be the authentic dream and not a second-hand blessing. thank you,
- 0:31Speaker 1: Holy Spirit, that as I step into this new season
- 0:34Speaker 1: of blessing and abundance, I will keep my heart from
- 0:38Speaker 1: falling into the same trap that Leah and Rachel fell into.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I decree and declare that greed, jealousy, and envy will
- 0:47Speaker 1: not have a place in my future. I will rejoice
- 0:51Speaker 1: and be glad with the dreams you've allowed me to
- 0:55Speaker 1: birth in my life. I will honor and appreciate what
- 0:59Speaker 1: I have For I know that as I live to
- 1:03Speaker 1: honor you, God, you will uphold my life and my future.
- 1:09Speaker 1: In Jesus' name, amen. Listening to these daily prayers strengthens
- 1:15Speaker 1: your relationship with God. Continue hearing from the Lord by

- 1:35Speaker 2: Jacob's Family Before this story, we learned about Jacob's journey
- 1:40Speaker 2: to Laban. Jacob was affirmed by the Lord that he
- 1:44Speaker 2: would be blessed as his father Isaac was, and his
- 1:47Speaker 2: father Jacob.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Upon arrival, Jacob.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Met Rachel, and immediately fell in love. In exchange for
- 1:54Speaker 2: being able to marry Rachel, Jacob agreed to work for
- 1:58Speaker 2: Laban for seven years. Now we will learn about Jacob
- 2:02Speaker 2: marrying Laban's older daughter Leah first before marrying Rachel and
- 2:07Speaker 2: the web of jealousy that bore an entire nation inspired
- 2:12Speaker 2: by the book of Genesis.
- 2:17Speaker 4: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:19Speaker 4: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:22Speaker 4: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
- 2:26Speaker 4: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:28Speaker 4: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 2:32Speaker 4: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:34Speaker 4: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:37Speaker 4: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 2:39Speaker 4: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 2:43Speaker 4: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 2:47Speaker 4: to get a copy of The Jesus Book, simply go
- 2:50Speaker 4: to jackgram.org slash Jesus. That's jackgram.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 2:57Speaker 4: you for your support. In our previous episode, we learned
- 3:01Speaker 4: that Jacob had fallen deeply in love with Rachel, the
- 3:04Speaker 4: younger daughter of his uncle Laban. And because of his
- 3:08Speaker 4: love for Rachel, he cuts a deal with Laban to
- 3:11Speaker 4: work seven years in exchange for Rachel's hand in marriage. Today,
- 3:16Speaker 4: we pick up as his seven years of hard labor
- 3:19Speaker 4: are coming to an end. But what seems to be
- 3:21Speaker 4: heading toward a very happy ending takes a sharp turn
- 3:24Speaker 4: into deceit and dishonesty, rivalry and resentment. Jacob, who is
- 3:29Speaker 4: the consummate cheater himself, is going to get a dose
- 3:33Speaker 4: of his own medicine and learn that what goes around
- 3:36Speaker 4: comes around as the cheater is now cheated. His own father-in-law, Laban,
- 3:40Speaker 4: is going to get the best of him, trapping Jacob
- 3:43Speaker 4: in a marriage to his older daughter, Leah. Jacob will
- 3:46Speaker 4: choose to marry both sisters, but only after Laban makes
- 3:50Speaker 4: him agree to another seven years of hard labor. And
- 3:54Speaker 4: just as Jacob experienced the affection of his mother, yet
- 3:57Speaker 4: the rejection of his father, we'll see how he'll now
- 4:01Speaker 4: love one wife and despise the other. Spite and favoritism
- 4:05Speaker 4: will poison the whole family and bring about a decades-long feud.
- 4:10Speaker 4: In many ways, Jacob is not even the central character
- 4:13Speaker 4: of today's story, but a sad pawn in a war
- 4:15Speaker 4: between sisters. It's a messy story, and yet In all
- 4:21Speaker 4: of this, you are going to see God's compassion and
- 4:23Speaker 4: grace towards Leah, Rachel, and Jacob. So, let's listen now
- 4:28Speaker 4: to today's reading.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Jacob had toiled the ground of Laban for seven years.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Jacob counted the months until he could finally be united
- 4:39Speaker 2: with Rachel as husband and wife. Daily he saw her
- 4:43Speaker 2: tending the sheep and pined after her. Their love and
- 4:46Speaker 2: desire for one another burned deeply even before marriage. And
- 4:51Speaker 2: as the time approached, Jacob's countenance grew brighter. Finally, it
- 4:56Speaker 2: was time. Jacob, with his head held high, approached Laban.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Seven years has passed, and I have worked faithfully for you,
- 5:06Speaker 2: Jacob said. Now give me my wife so that we
- 5:10Speaker 2: can make love and build a life together. Laban wasted
- 5:14Speaker 2: no time and gathered together all the people for a
- 5:17Speaker 2: great feast. Jacob's dream to be with Rachel was finally
- 5:22Speaker 2: becoming a reality. Yet Jacob's wedding would not end the
- 5:26Speaker 2: way he thought it would, nor would his marriage be
- 5:29Speaker 2: the dream come true he expected. Late into the night
- 5:34Speaker 2: before the wedding was going to commence, Laban took his
- 5:37Speaker 2: oldest daughter Leah and dressed her in a wedding gown
- 5:40Speaker 2: and veil to cover her face, for back then it
- 5:43Speaker 2: was custom for the bride to be covered. Leah was
- 5:46Speaker 2: not adorned with the same beauty as her sisters, Rather,
- 5:49Speaker 2: she carried herself plainly and did not draw the same
- 5:52Speaker 2: attention as Rachel. In Jacob's excitement and revelry with wedding
- 5:57Speaker 2: music and wine, he took Leah as his wife. The
- 6:01Speaker 2: two of them were one, and Jacob went into Leah
- 6:04Speaker 2: for the first time, thinking it was Rachel. Jacob, the
- 6:09Speaker 2: man who had tricked his own brother and father into
- 6:11Speaker 2: giving up their birthrights and blessings, found himself in a
- 6:15Speaker 2: wedding bed with the wrong woman, tricked by his father-in-law.
- 6:20Speaker 2: The next morning, as the sun just began to rise
- 6:23Speaker 2: above the peaks in the horizon, Jacob awoke. The night before,
- 6:27Speaker 2: he had hardly remembered, but he did remember that he
- 6:30Speaker 2: was finally married to Rachel after seven years of labor.
- 6:35Speaker 2: He turned to his wife and was bewildered to find
- 6:38Speaker 2: Leah laying next to him. Inconsolable, Jacob bolted out of
- 6:43Speaker 2: his tent in a fit of rage. Arms flailing and
- 6:46Speaker 2: heart pounding, Jacob pinned Laban to the wall of his tent.'
- 6:49Speaker 2: What have you done to me?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Jacob shouted.' Did I not serve you.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Faithfully for Rachel? Why have you deceived me like this?' Laban,
- 6:59Speaker 2: knowing he had gotten away with his plan, grinned.' It
- 7:03Speaker 2: is not custom for the younger daughter to be married
- 7:06Speaker 2: before the oldest daughter,' he said nonchalantly.' You can marry Rachel,
- 7:11Speaker 2: of course.
- 7:12Speaker 3: but only if you.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Have served me another seven years.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Jacob was distraught.
- 7:19Speaker 2: The trickster had been outplayed at his own game. Jacob
- 7:23Speaker 2: agreed to Laban's terms. He had no choice if he
- 7:26Speaker 2: wanted to be with Rachel. He married Rachel a week later,
- 7:30Speaker 2: and then served Laban for another seven years. Jacob and
- 7:35Speaker 2: Leah had sex for children, but Jacob and Rachel made
- 7:38Speaker 2: love for passion. This would send Leah into a spiral
- 7:42Speaker 2: of insecurity and spite, a spiral that would ultimately lead
- 7:47Speaker 2: to a feud that lasted years. God saw that Leah
- 7:51Speaker 2: was despised by Jacob and Rachel and had compassion on her.
- 7:56Speaker 2: He opened her womb and made her fruitful. Though Rachel
- 8:00Speaker 2: was barren and left childless, Leah conceived and bore a
- 8:04Speaker 2: son and called his name Reuben. In her heart of hearts,
- 8:08Speaker 2: she truly believed that if she bore a son, Jacob
- 8:11Speaker 2: would love her. So began Leah's desperate mission to fill
- 8:15Speaker 2: a void in her life left by her husband. She
- 8:18Speaker 2: conceived again and bore a son, and named him Simon.
- 8:23Speaker 2: She believed Simon was a gift from God because her
- 8:26Speaker 2: husband hated her. Leah bore another.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Son, Levi. After three sons, she truly.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Believed that Jacob would love her. Yet Jacob continued to
- 8:37Speaker 2: love Rachel, and Leah fell deeper into depression. For a
- 8:42Speaker 2: fourth time, Leah conceived and bore a son. His name
- 8:45Speaker 2: was Judah, and this time, instead of hoping that another
- 8:49Speaker 2: son would make Jacob love her, Leah praised God, thanking
- 8:53Speaker 2: him for his faithfulness. After Judah was born, Leah ceased
- 8:58Speaker 2: bearing children. Rachel knew that she was barren and hated
- 9:02Speaker 2: her sister for giving Jacob sons when she could not.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Rachel's jealousy towards Leah caused her to lash out at Jacob.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Give me children, or I shall die.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Jacob's anger boiled up towards Rachel, for.
- 9:16Speaker 2: He too was angry that they could not have children together.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Am I in the place of God? I cannot open
- 9:22Speaker 2: and close your womb. So Rachel devised a plan, a
- 9:27Speaker 2: plan that hearkened back to Sarah in the wilderness of Canaan.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Here is my servant, Bilhah, Rachel said.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Go into her, and.
- 9:37Speaker 2: She will have a child on my behalf. So she
- 9:40Speaker 2: gave Jacob her servant, and Jacob gladly slept with her,
- 9:44Speaker 2: repeating the sins of his grandfather Abraham. Jacob and Bilhah conceived,
- 9:50Speaker 2: and bore a son named Dan. Rachel was pleased, but
- 9:54Speaker 2: wanted more. Not because she truly wanted children, but because
- 9:58Speaker 2: she could not bear.
- 9:59Speaker 3: The thought of her sisterhood. having more than her.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Jacob and Bilhah continued, and Bilhah had another son on
- 10:05Speaker 2: Rachel's behalf. With great struggle, I have triumphed over my sister.
- 10:11Speaker 2: So she named her second son Naphtali. The cycle of
- 10:15Speaker 2: jealousy did not cease. Leah to spite Rachel and gain
- 10:20Speaker 2: the love of Jacob, gave her servant to be with
- 10:23Speaker 2: Jacob so they might have more children. Her servant, Milpa,
- 10:27Speaker 2: and Jacob slept together and bore Gad, yet Leah was
- 10:32Speaker 2: not satisfied. She gave Zilpah to Jacob again, and the
- 10:36Speaker 2: two bore Asher. Jacob, caught in the middle of a
- 10:40Speaker 2: civil war, made no protests. He sat by and enjoyed
- 10:44Speaker 2: the fruit of his wife's insecurities. He refused to care
- 10:48Speaker 2: for their hearts or reassure them of his love. No,
- 10:52Speaker 2: Jacob had no such integrity, a quality he would soon
- 10:56Speaker 2: be forced to possess. In the days of the wheat harvest,
- 11:00Speaker 2: Reuben went out and found some mandrakes, a rare plant
- 11:04Speaker 2: used for various medical and recreational uses. They were rare
- 11:08Speaker 2: and valuable. Reuben brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel
- 11:13Speaker 2: wanted some of his mandrakes. and asked Leia if she
- 11:16Speaker 2: could have some. Leia was in no mood to be
- 11:19Speaker 2: generous with Rachel. Isn't it enough that you have stolen
- 11:23Speaker 2: my husband away from me? Now you want my son's mandrakes?
- 11:27Speaker 3: Leia protested.
- 11:29Speaker 2: In exchange for your mandrakes, you can lie with Jacob tonight.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Will that satisfy you? Rachel said.
- 11:36Speaker 2: At this point, Jacob was a tool for Leia and
- 11:38Speaker 2: Rachel's war against one another.
- 11:41Speaker 3: No more love and no more dreams.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Only spite marked Jacob's household. When Jacob was returning from
- 11:49Speaker 2: the field, Leah came out to meet him. I have
- 11:52Speaker 2: given my son's mandrakes to Rachel so that.
- 11:54Speaker 3: You might lie with me.
- 11:56Speaker 2: So Jacob slept with Leah that night, and Leah conceived
- 12:00Speaker 2: a fifth son.
- 12:01Speaker 3: They named him Issachar.
- 12:04Speaker 2: The whirlwind of Leah and Rachel did not cease. Leah
- 12:08Speaker 2: bore Jacob another son and named him Zebulun.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Now my husband must honor me, Leah said.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Leah was certain that six sons would prove to be
- 12:18Speaker 2: enough for Jacob's love. Yet again she came back empty-handed. Afterwards,
- 12:24Speaker 2: Leah bore a daughter and named her Dinah. God turned
- 12:28Speaker 2: his eyes toward Rachel. He listened to her honest cries
- 12:32Speaker 2: for a son of her own. Under the moon and
- 12:35Speaker 2: blessings of God, Jacob and Rachel made love. And from
- 12:39Speaker 2: that love came Joseph.
- 12:41Speaker 3: A miracle from God.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Even though Rachel had conceived this miracle from God, she
- 12:46Speaker 2: still got caught up in the trap all.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Humans get stuck in, wanting more.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Jacob was fruitful, and his sons were growing to be
- 12:55Speaker 2: strong and ready to begin lives.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Of their own. He decided it would be best to
- 13:00Speaker 3: return to the land of his father Isaac.
- 13:03Speaker 2: He approached Laban and said, I have served you, I
- 13:07Speaker 2: have given you grandchildren, and I have cared for your
- 13:09Speaker 2: land and daughters. Allow me to leave and return home.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Laban enjoyed having Jacob by his side. Jacob carried with
- 13:18Speaker 2: him the blessings of God, and everything Jacob did, he
- 13:21Speaker 2: did with excellence. I will pay whatever it takes to
- 13:25Speaker 2: have you stay here, for I am blessed because you
- 13:28Speaker 2: are here, he replied. Jacob grew tired of Laban and
- 13:33Speaker 2: greatly desired to.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Leave his presence.
- 13:35Speaker 2: I have given you enough. Everything you have given me
- 13:38Speaker 2: to take care of I have increased. Allow me, please,
- 13:42Speaker 2: to depart with my own family. Laban agreed, and the
- 13:46Speaker 2: two set up arrangements for Jacob to leave with a
- 13:49Speaker 2: part of Laban's flocks. The agreement was that Jacob would
- 13:52Speaker 2: take the blemished sheep, while Laban kept the pure white sheep.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Laban tried first to trick Jacob and hid the speckled
- 14:00Speaker 2: sheep so they would not breed and increase in number. However, Jacob,
- 14:04Speaker 2: over dozens of years serving under Laban, had honed the
- 14:08Speaker 2: craft of breeding and sheepherding animals. Jacob specifically bred the
- 14:12Speaker 2: pure sheep to produce.
- 14:14Speaker 3: More speckled and blemished sheep.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Jacob was able to produce stronger and healthier sheep for
- 14:19Speaker 2: himself in great number. Laban had tricked Jacob once, but
- 14:23Speaker 2: Jacob was the ultimate trickster and would not be outdone again.
- 14:28Speaker 2: So Jacob increased in wealth and influence. With his wives, children,
- 14:32Speaker 2: and newfound freedom, Jacob ventured back to Canaan. Yet Laban
- 14:37Speaker 2: would not let Jacob go unpunished.
- 14:44Speaker 4: Jacob works hard for seven more years. Rachel is anxious
- 14:49Speaker 4: to marry the man of her dreams. Jacob comes to
- 14:52Speaker 4: Laban and reminds him of the deal. It's time to
- 14:55Speaker 4: pay up. He does not want to wait another moment
- 14:58Speaker 4: to marry Rachel. At first, everything seems to be heading
- 15:02Speaker 4: in the right direction, a storybook ending for the young couple.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Laban quickly throws a great feast with lots of food
- 15:09Speaker 4: and lots of wine, of which Jacob freely partook, no doubt.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Needless to say, he was fired up. Perhaps in his
- 15:17Speaker 4: haste and with the fuzzy head of one who celebrated
- 15:19Speaker 4: too much, Jacob fails to realize that his bride that
- 15:23Speaker 4: Laban brings to him is not Rachel, but his older
- 15:27Speaker 4: sister Leah. Still, he unites with her, marries her, and
- 15:31Speaker 4: seals his fate with her, a fact he realizes with
- 15:34Speaker 4: horror and anger the following morning. He forcefully confronts Laban
- 15:39Speaker 4: and only then realized that he, the master of deceptions,
- 15:44Speaker 4: has been tricked. The trickster has been tricked. Leah is
- 15:48Speaker 4: now his wife, but he really loves Rachel, so Laban
- 15:52Speaker 4: agrees to let him marry her as well, if Jacob
- 15:55Speaker 4: agrees to another seven years of hard work. Well, Jacob agrees.
- 16:03Speaker 4: Rachel and Leah become bitter rivals, but God sees Leah's
- 16:08Speaker 4: rejection and has compassion on her. He blesses her with
- 16:12Speaker 4: a fertile womb, She bears four sons with Jacob and
- 16:15Speaker 4: then stops conceiving. With each child, she holds out hope
- 16:19Speaker 4: that this new son will cause Jacob to love her,
- 16:22Speaker 4: but it never happens. Rachel, for her part, grows increasingly
- 16:27Speaker 4: bitter and demands Jacob give her a child lest she die.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Listen to Jacob's response found in Genesis 30, verse 2.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Jacob became angry with her and said, Am I in
- 16:39Speaker 4: the place of God who has kept you from having children?
- 16:43Speaker 4: This may seem at first to be an appropriate answer,
- 16:46Speaker 4: acknowledging God is the giver of life. But if you
- 16:49Speaker 4: look at it closely, Jacob is simply denying any responsibility,
- 16:52Speaker 4: even blaming God for Rachel's inability to conceive. Rather than
- 16:57Speaker 4: pursuing God and asking for the blessing of a child
- 17:00Speaker 4: with Rachel, he simply says, it's not on me. This
- 17:04Speaker 4: is not my fault. Rachel offers her servant to Jacob,
- 17:08Speaker 4: and he accepts, just as his grandfather did, and produces
- 17:11Speaker 4: two sons outside of his marriage. Leah follows suit and
- 17:15Speaker 4: offers her servant. Jacob again accepts. Like his father, Isaac,
- 17:19Speaker 4: he seems nothing more than a pawn in a bitter
- 17:21Speaker 4: war between siblings. The Lord then looks on Rachel with
- 17:25Speaker 4: a tender heart of compassion and grants her the son
- 17:27Speaker 4: which she so desperately desired. This son, Joseph, he will
- 17:32Speaker 4: grow into a man who will help save many nations
- 17:35Speaker 4: one day. But not before the ugly consequences of this
- 17:39Speaker 4: rivalry between sisters and Jacob's lack of leadership rips this
- 17:43Speaker 4: fractured family apart. In life, there are many betrayals and setbacks,
- 17:48Speaker 4: as in the case of Jacob and his family. And
- 17:52Speaker 4: the question becomes, how will you handle setbacks in your life?
- 17:56Speaker 4: How will you handle the mess-ups that you have made?
- 17:59Speaker 4: Do you keep your eyes upon God and trust in
- 18:02Speaker 4: Him in repentance and faith, as Jacob could have done,
- 18:05Speaker 4: should have done? It is at this point in our
- 18:08Speaker 4: story that Jacob seems to wake up and realize he
- 18:11Speaker 4: needs to leave Laban's land and it's time to return
- 18:14Speaker 4: to Canaan, the land of promise. Next time, we'll learn
- 18:18Speaker 4: how Jacob escapes his entanglement with Laban. Dear God, there
- 18:24Speaker 4: are many times that things don't turn out like we
- 18:26Speaker 4: had hoped or expected. Sometimes it's our own fault. We
- 18:31Speaker 4: can be cheated or cheat others, take advantage of or
- 18:35Speaker 4: disappoint others, and be disappointed by others. Help us to
- 18:39Speaker 4: continue to trust you and act with integrity, not dishonesty.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Thank you for this lesson in your holy word. Amen.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
