- Cubs outlast Dodgers! This is The Sports Reset for Thursday August 6th In MLB, the Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7 to 6 at Wrigley Field, and the middle innings carried the night. The Cubs put up six in the sixth, with Javier Baez and Jason Heyward each driving three-run homers, then Anthony Rizzo added the seventh-inning run that held up after Alex Verdugo’s three-run shot made it tight. The Toronto Blue Jays edged the Houston Astros 5 to 4, the New York Mets slipped past the Cleveland Guardians 6 to 5, and the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 10 to 4. In the WNBA, the New York Liberty held off the Seattle Storm 92 to 86, a useful home win for a team still built around Breanna Stewart’s two-way production, while the Atlanta Dream beat the Phoenix Mercury 96 to 82 and kept leaning on one of the league’s stronger scoring profiles. Looking ahead, the NFL is back on the field with the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals opening the preseason in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton. It also ties neatly into enshrinement week, with Larry Fitzgerald and Luke Kuechly part of a 2026 class that also includes Drew Brees, Roger Craig, and Adam Vinatieri. In the WNBA, the Las Vegas Aces visit the Indiana Fever, with A’ja Wilson’s scoring and rim protection meeting a Fever group powered by Caitlin Clark’s playmaking and Kelsey Mitchell’s shot-making. In MLB, the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs play a makeup game at Wrigley Field, while the San Diego Padres try to answer after a rough night in Arizona against the Diamondbacks. In golf, the Wyndham Championship gets rolling at Sedgefield, with Thorbjørn Olesen, Jordan Smith, and Austin Smotherman listed at even par as the early board starts to take shape.
