- 0:09Tesla X. The Boring Company and
- 0:12Neurolink. I'm your host, Will.
- 0:15Walden. The Global Alliance for
- 0:17Responsible Media or GARM, which is an influential group within
- 0:21the advertising sector, has reportedly suspended its
- 0:24operations now. This happened in the wake of an
- 0:28antitrust lawsuit filed by Elon Musk's social media company X,
- 0:32formerly known as Twitter, and the decision to halt Garms
- 0:36activities was communicated to members by the World Federation
- 0:40of Advertisers on Thursday, which is the WFA.
- 0:44An internal e-mail reported by Business Insider reveals that
- 0:47the WFACEO emphasized the difficulty of the decision,
- 0:52sending Garms status as a not-for-profit organization with
- 0:55very limited resources in his communication.
- 0:58They expressed that the WFA and Garm's intent to challenge the
- 1:02allegations made by X in court, asserting confidence that the
- 1:05legal process would confirm their adherence to competition
- 1:08rules. However, despite this
- 1:10confidence, the resource constrains faced by GARM have
- 1:13necessitated the suspension of its operations for now, and the
- 1:18lawsuit in question was filed by X in the US District Court for
- 1:22the Northern District of Texas, accusing GARM of conspiring to
- 1:26withhold advertising revenue from the platform.
- 1:29Rumble Inc, a video sharing platform similar to YouTube,
- 1:33also joined X in the legal action, alleging that a
- 1:36coalition of advertisers and agencies orchestrated by GARM
- 1:39had conspired to block ad revenue from flowing to certain
- 1:43platforms, including X. Now.
- 1:46The lawsuit specifically targets the WFA, advertising giant WPP
- 1:51and its subsidiary Group M Worldwide, among others.
- 1:55Now, Rumble's official account on X shared a post stating
- 1:58Rumble has joined X to sue a cartel of advertisers and AD
- 2:02agencies who conspire to block ad revenue from going to certain
- 2:06platforms and content creators. Now, this legal action has
- 2:09escalated tensions within the advertising industry,
- 2:12particularly regarding how ad revenues are distributed and who
- 2:15controls their decisions. Now, Garms suspension marks a
- 2:19temporary victory for Musk and X, even though no court filing
- 2:23has been made yet. Now the CEO of X, Linda
- 2:27Yacarino, expressed on X that the suspension of Garms
- 2:31activities is a crucial step towards what she hopes will be a
- 2:34broader reform across the advertising ecosystem.
- 2:38She said no small group should be able to monopolize what gets
- 2:42monetized. This is an important
- 2:44acknowledgement and necessary step in the right direction.
- 2:48But despite this, the lawsuit may have unintended consequences
- 2:52for X's advertising business. The founders of a watchdog group
- 2:58called Check My Ads Institute, or CMAI, warned in an op-ed that
- 3:03the lawsuit could further alienate advertisers from X.
- 3:06They argued that everyone can see that advertising on X is a
- 3:10treacherous business relationship for advertisers.
- 3:14Now, this could cause some unease.
- 3:16And the core of X's complaint lies in the allegation that GARM
- 3:21organized a collective effort to withhold billions of dollars in
- 3:24advertising from Twitter, particularly after Musk's
- 3:27acquisition in late 2022. This action, according to X, was
- 3:31motivated by concerns within GARM that the platform had
- 3:34strayed from established brand safety standards under Musk's
- 3:38leadership. Now, GARM, which was established
- 3:41in 2019, was originally created in response to incidents like
- 3:45the Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand, where
- 3:47the perpetrator live streamed the attack on Facebook.
- 3:51The group was designed to help advertisers avoid having their
- 3:54content up here alongside illegal and harmful material,
- 3:59and over the years, GARM claimed to successfully reduce the
- 4:01prevalence of such problematic ads from six point 1% to just
- 4:05one point .7% between 2020 and 2023.
- 4:10Now, concerns about brand safety resurfaced when Musk took over
- 4:14Twitter, as his more relaxed approach to content moderation
- 4:17led to fears among advertisers that their ads could be placed
- 4:21next to misinformation. Hate.
- 4:22Speech and other objectable content.
- 4:25These concerns have led to a significant drop in advertising
- 4:28revenue for the platform, which remains heavily reliant on ads
- 4:32as its primary source of income. Now, Musk's approach to handling
- 4:36advertisers has been contentious, to say the least.
- 4:40He has openly clashed with brands that have pulled their
- 4:43spending from X, sometimes using aggressive rhetoric.
- 4:46For instance, last year he responded to advertisers leaving
- 4:50the platform with a very blunt message.
- 4:52He said go F yourselves. Now.
- 4:56This confidential stance has not only strained relationships with
- 4:59advertisers, but also further stabilized X's ad revenue
- 5:05stream. Now, despite occasional claims
- 5:08from X's leadership that the platform's ad business is
- 5:11improving, the lawsuit against GARM suggests ongoing
- 5:15difficulties. Linda Yacarino from X
- 5:19acknowledged in a video release Monday that the alleged
- 5:22conspiracy to boycott X posed a severe threat to the company's
- 5:26future, saying that the loss of advertising dollars has placed
- 5:29the platform quote at long term risk.
- 5:33Now, the shutdown of Garam may have broader implications for
- 5:36the advertising industry, though, particularly for other
- 5:39watchdog groups. Now, the case echoes previous
- 5:43legal actions taken by X under Musk's leadership, where the
- 5:46company has targeted organizations that it perceives
- 5:49as adversarial to its business interests.
- 5:53Now X has also filed lawsuits against the Center for
- 5:57Countering Digital Hate, or CCDH, and Media Matters for
- 6:00America, both of which have raised concerns about the
- 6:03content on the platform and its impact on advertisers.
- 6:07The CCDH lawsuit was dismissed by a federal judge who
- 6:10criticized the suit as an attempt to penalize the
- 6:13nonprofit for exercising its right to free speech.
- 6:16However, the ongoing legal battles, including the one with
- 6:19Media Matters which highlighted the presence of anti-Semitic and
- 6:23pro Nazi content on X, have already caused significant
- 6:26damage to X's relationships with major advertisers, some of whom
- 6:30pulled their ads following those reports but garms closure.
- 6:35While a short term victory for Musk NX raises questions about
- 6:39the future of advertising self regulation.
- 6:42This coalition, which was formed with the intent to create and
- 6:45enforce standards around brand safety, has not been sidelined,
- 6:49has now been sidelined by the very forces it sought to
- 6:52regulate. And as a result, there may be a
- 6:54chilling effect on similar initiatives within the industry,
- 6:57as other organizations may fear similar legal reprisals.
- 7:02Now, the broader impact on X's business remains uncertain.
- 7:06It hasn't been that long, and the platform's advertising
- 7:09revenue has already suffered a nearly 50% decline since Elon
- 7:13Musk acquired it. That's a downturn that's driven
- 7:16in a large part by concerns over content safety and the
- 7:20suitability of the platform for major brands.
- 7:23Musk's direct involvement in promoting content that many
- 7:26advertisers find objectable has only exacerbated those concerns,
- 7:30leading to further erosion of trust between X and its
- 7:34advertisers. Hey, thank you so much for
