- 1:13Speaker 2: gun smoke.

- 1:32Speaker 2: Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that
- 1:36Speaker 2: moved west with young America. The story of a man who.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Moved with it.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Matt Dillon, United States Marshal.
- 1:45Speaker 5: Gunsmoke Mr.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Dillon. Yeah, what is it, Chester?
- 2:16Speaker 6: Doc wants you upstairs.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Well, I promised Mr.
- 2:19Speaker 7: Green I'd be at the Dodge house in a few minutes, Chester.
- 2:21Speaker 7: Tell Doc I'll drop along later, huh?
- 2:22Speaker 6: Young Lee Prentice is up there. He got shot last night.
- 2:25Speaker 8: What?
- 2:26Speaker 4: Shot?
- 2:27Speaker 8: Yes, sir.
- 2:27Speaker 6: Happened out at his ranch. Doc thinks you ought to
- 2:29Speaker 6: talk to him.
- 2:30Speaker 4: All right, let's go. I wouldn't have thought Lee Prentiss
- 2:34Speaker 4: had an enemy in the world.
- 2:36Speaker 6: No, sir.
- 2:36Speaker 9: He's about the nicest young fellow that's settled around here
- 2:39Speaker 9: in a long time.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Who brought him into town, Chester? Nobody did.
- 2:43Speaker 6: He rode in alone. Doc don't know how he managed it.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Oh, hello, Matt. Doc. Well, I hear you took a bullet, Lee.
- 2:54Speaker 6: It's not bad, Marshal. Doc's got me all fixed up now.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, sure.
- 2:58Speaker 10: But you're going to stay right here with me and take.
- 3:00Speaker 6: It easy for a few days, Lee. I'd be putting
- 3:02Speaker 6: you out, Doc.
- 3:04Speaker 10: Oh, yes, of course, it'll be a nuisance, but I'll
- 3:06Speaker 10: manage somehow.
- 3:07Speaker 4: How did it happen, Lee? Did you get in a fight?
- 3:10Speaker 9: I didn't even see him, Marshal. It was still dark
- 3:14Speaker 9: this morning, and I was going out after my horses,
- 3:17Speaker 9: and then a bullet knocked me down.
- 3:18Speaker 6: That's all I know.
- 3:21Speaker 9: I did an awful lot of shooting the next few minutes,
- 3:23Speaker 9: and whoever it was run off.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Would it be any particular man, Lee?
- 3:30Speaker 6: I tell you, if I knew, Marshal, I don't want
- 3:32Speaker 6: any trouble.
- 3:33Speaker 4: All right, I believe you.
- 3:34Speaker 8: Oh, man, it's a downright shame when a young fella
- 3:37Speaker 8: like Lee comes to Dodge and in one year makes
- 3:40Speaker 8: as many friends as he has and then gets shot
- 3:42Speaker 8: down by some murderer.
- 3:44Speaker 10: Now, you've got to find out who did that.
- 3:46Speaker 7: I don't have much to go on, Doc. In fact,
- 3:47Speaker 7: I don't have anything.
- 3:48Speaker 10: I don't care. You've got to do something.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Like what?
- 3:51Speaker 10: Well, what do you mean? I'm not a lawman.
- 3:54Speaker 4: How do I know? Well, there's one thing, Doc, and
- 3:57Speaker 4: you too, Chester.
- 3:58Speaker 11: What, Mr.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Dillon?
- 3:59Speaker 7: Don't say anything about where Lee is. Whoever did this
- 4:03Speaker 7: is probably still around.
- 4:05Speaker 10: Well, you mean he might come up here and try
- 4:07Speaker 10: to finish him off?
- 4:09Speaker 4: He might.
- 4:10Speaker 10: Chester, you go fetch me one of those shotguns you
- 4:14Speaker 10: keep downstairs.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Sure, Doc. Okay, Doc, but don't get trigger-heavy.
- 4:19Speaker 10: I know what I'm doing.
- 4:20Speaker 6: Doc, martial art. I'm sure sorry for all the trouble
- 4:25Speaker 6: I'm causing.
- 4:25Speaker 4: It's no trouble, Lee.
- 4:26Speaker 6: Oh, it's no trouble, he says.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Oh, all right, Matt.
- 4:29Speaker 10: You go find him something to eat later this afternoon
- 4:32Speaker 10: and bring it up here. A nice, oh, say, roast chicken.
- 4:36Speaker 10: That'd be just about right.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Sure, Doc. I'll be glad to. Gee, I... See you later, Lee.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Come on, Chester.
- 5:01Speaker 12: I'm glad I ran into you, Matt.
- 5:03Speaker 6: It was a good supper.
- 5:04Speaker 4: It was all my pleasure, Kitty. Matt. Yeah, what?
- 5:09Speaker 12: Have you got time to sit here and watch the
- 5:11Speaker 12: crowd for a while? I don't have to be back
- 5:13Speaker 12: at work just yet.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Sure, sure, Kitty. Now you sit there. All right.
- 5:19Speaker 12: Well, looks like Dodge is in for another big night tonight.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I suppose.
- 5:25Speaker 12: Just think, there's hardly one of these cowboys that won't
- 5:28Speaker 12: be broke before morning.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Well, they figure it's worth it.
- 5:32Speaker 12: Three months paying one night?
- 5:34Speaker 10: They're crazy, all of them.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Well, what would you happen to do with their money, Kitty?
- 5:38Speaker 10: Well, I don't know.
- 5:39Speaker 12: Most anything's better than throwing it away.
- 5:41Speaker 7: Well, most of these men have waited a long time
- 5:44Speaker 7: for a night or two in Dodge.
- 5:46Speaker 4: They don't care what it costs.
- 5:48Speaker 12: There's only one cowboy I ever knew who showed any sense.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Oh?
- 5:53Speaker 7: Must be quite a fellow for you to say that, Kitty.
- 5:56Speaker 10: Well, you know who I mean, Matt. Young Lee Prentiss.
- 5:59Speaker 13: Oh.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Oh, sure.
- 6:01Speaker 12: Remember last year how he drifted into town and made
- 6:04Speaker 12: a killing at Farrell and then swore off gambling?
- 6:06Speaker 7: Yeah, he stayed with it, too. I never heard of
- 6:08Speaker 7: his going nearer game since.
- 6:10Speaker 10: Oh, he hasn't.
- 6:11Speaker 12: Took his money and put it in that little ranch
- 6:13Speaker 12: of his. You gotta admire the boy.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Yeah, Lee's all right.
- 6:17Speaker 12: He's sure a lot different from the rest of these
- 6:19Speaker 12: saddle bumps.
- 6:21Speaker 10: I wonder where he's been lately. He usually comes to
- 6:23Speaker 10: town every day or so.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Well, uh, Kitty, I'll tell you. Lee's up at Doc's.
- 6:31Speaker 4: At Doc's?
- 6:32Speaker 10: Then he is in town.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Oh, he's been there for a couple of days.
- 6:36Speaker 6: Well, what's the matter? Is he sick or something?
- 6:38Speaker 4: No, he's not sick.
- 6:40Speaker 10: Oh, wait a minute, Matt. Hey, mister. Yeah, you.
- 6:44Speaker 12: Come here.
- 6:48Speaker 4: What do you want?
- 6:50Speaker 6: I'm Kitty, remember?
- 6:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember.
- 6:54Speaker 10: Well, you don't act like it.
- 6:56Speaker 12: You must have been drunker than I thought.
- 6:57Speaker 4: I'm in a hurry, Kitty. Well, go on, then.
- 6:59Speaker 10: I won't tell you.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Tell me what?
- 7:03Speaker 12: You remember asking me last night if I know anything
- 7:05Speaker 12: about Lee Prentiss?
- 7:06Speaker 13: Did I?
- 7:10Speaker 10: You really were drunk.
- 7:12Speaker 12: But if you're still interested, Marshal Dillon here just told
- 7:14Speaker 12: me he's up at Doc Adams.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Oh, I see. Well, I don't need him now. Bye.
- 7:24Speaker 7: Oh, just a minute, mister. You're a stranger in Dodge, huh?
- 7:33Speaker 7: I'll talk to you later, Marshal.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Not now. What do you mean, later? After I've done
- 7:39Speaker 4: what I come here for. What's your name, mister? Jake Harbin.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Jake Harbin. You look like a gunman to me. Why
- 7:49Speaker 4: are you looking for Lee Prentiss? All right, Marshal, if
- 7:52Speaker 4: you're so nosy, I'll tell you. I'm going to kill him. No,
- 7:57Speaker 4: you're not. You can't stop me. Jake, uh....
- 8:05Speaker 10: Harbin, huh?
- 8:06Speaker 8: What'd you.
- 8:10Speaker 10: What'd you hit him for, Matt? What's this all about?
- 8:13Speaker 4: I don't know, Kitty. But maybe I'll find out when
- 8:16Speaker 4: he comes to. In jail.
- 8:38Speaker 6: Well, you're here early this morning, Mr.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Dillon. Go bring Jake Harbin in here, Jester, will you?
- 8:43Speaker 4: I want to talk to him. Yes, sir.
- 8:45Speaker 6: He's been saying he wants to talk to you, too.
- 8:48Speaker 6: He wouldn't tell me nothing. Don't stick my.
- 8:51Speaker 8: Nose into something that doesn't concern me.
- 8:53Speaker 6: He's all he'd say.
- 8:56Speaker 10: Marshal here, Harbin.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Well, it's about time.
- 9:04Speaker 10: Here he is, Mr.
- 9:05Speaker 11: Dillon.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Come over here, Harbin.
- 9:11Speaker 7: You'd have saved yourself a lot of trouble if you'd
- 9:13Speaker 7: have stayed around here last night, Marshal.
- 9:15Speaker 4: What do you mean by cold cock and a man
- 9:17Speaker 4: throwing him in jail? Where are you from, Robin? Baker City.
- 9:21Speaker 4: Down on the Canadian River?
- 9:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:24Speaker 7: Anybody goes to jail in Baker City, they search him first.
- 9:27Speaker 4: What do you mean? If you'd have searched me last night,
- 9:31Speaker 4: you'd have found this. What is it?
- 9:34Speaker 7: Read it.
- 9:36Speaker 6: And afterwards, you can apologize to me. What is it, Mr.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Dillon? It's a warrant, Chester.
- 9:48Speaker 7: And that also says I'm a legal deputy. You can
- 9:51Speaker 7: telegraph Ben Goddard for proof if you want. Who's Ben Goddard?
- 9:55Speaker 7: He's the sheriff at Baker City. That's all legal, Marshal.
- 9:59Speaker 6: Yeah, but who's the warrant for him, Mr.
- 10:01Speaker 13: Dillon?
- 10:02Speaker 4: Lee Prentiss, Chester. For murder. They want him dead or alive.
- 10:08Speaker 3: The End.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Chester.
- 10:32Speaker 7: Yes, sir? Go down and send a telegram to the
- 10:34Speaker 7: sheriff of Baker City. What'd you say his name is, Harbin?
- 10:38Speaker 4: Ben Goddard. All right.
- 10:41Speaker 7: Ask Ben Goddard to verify this warrant for Lee Prentiss.
- 10:45Speaker 7: And also ask him if Jake Harbin here is a
- 10:48Speaker 7: legal deputy.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. You'll find out, Marshal. I expect we will, Harbin.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Get going, Chester.
- 10:55Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 11:01Speaker 7: This, uh, warrant says Lee Prentiss is wanted for murder, Harbin.
- 11:07Speaker 7: It's kind of hard to believe.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Knowing Lee? Well, then you don't know him very well, Marshal.
- 11:13Speaker 7: Because he is a murderer, all right. And he'd have
- 11:16Speaker 7: been caught a long time ago. They'd have found out
- 11:20Speaker 7: where he was hiding.
- 11:21Speaker 4: He hasn't been hiding.
- 11:22Speaker 7: The leads live here for nearly a year.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Right out in the open. And so? He's all through now, maybe.
- 11:30Speaker 4: If this is true. I want to tell you one thing, Harvin.
- 11:36Speaker 4: You tell me what?
- 11:37Speaker 7: Nobody, whether he's a deputy or not, is going to
- 11:40Speaker 7: come to Dodge and kill a man.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Dead or alive, Marshal, you read the warrant. I don't
- 11:47Speaker 4: care what it says.
- 11:51Speaker 7: You wouldn't like it said that you're protecting a murderer,
- 11:55Speaker 7: would you, Marshal?
- 11:57Speaker 4: I don't know that he is a murderer yet. But
- 12:01Speaker 4: you came pretty close to being one. I was going
- 12:04Speaker 4: to explain it to you after I killed him. I
- 12:07Speaker 4: didn't want no interference. Well, you got it now. What
- 12:12Speaker 4: kind of law do they have in Baker City? Don't
- 12:14Speaker 4: they ever give men a trial down there? Sure they do.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Why didn't you come.
- 12:18Speaker 7: Here and arrest Lee and take him back with you?
- 12:22Speaker 7: Are they afraid to put him on trial?
- 12:26Speaker 4: Not hardly, Marshal. But they hired a killer like you
- 12:30Speaker 4: to come up here and shoot him. Look, it's all legal.
- 12:35Speaker 4: In Baker City, maybe it is. But not in Dodge.
- 12:40Speaker 7: Well, the law's the same everywhere. It should be, Harbin.
- 12:45Speaker 7: But sometimes it depends on who's representing the law. I
- 12:50Speaker 7: don't aim to argue with you. Now, look, let's get
- 12:52Speaker 7: one thing straight. You're not going to shoot Lee Prentiss
- 12:56Speaker 7: no matter what happens. I'll kill you myself if you
- 13:01Speaker 7: try it.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Okay. Okay, Marshal. Why don't you talk to him, being
- 13:09Speaker 4: as you are such good friends?
- 13:12Speaker 7: Ask him how he'd like to stand trial.
- 13:16Speaker 4: I will, Harbin. But you stay away from him. You hear? Why, sure, Marshal.
- 13:26Speaker 4: I'm just trying to do my duty.
- 13:49Speaker 10: Come in, come in, come in.
- 13:52Speaker 6: Oh, hello, man.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Hello, Marshal. How are you feeling, Lee?
- 13:56Speaker 13: Fine.
- 13:57Speaker 6: Doc says I can leave any time.
- 13:59Speaker 10: Oh, she doesn't try to do any hard work for
- 14:00Speaker 10: another week or so.
- 14:02Speaker 6: I'll take it easy, Doc. You better.
- 14:04Speaker 7: Lee, did you ever hear of a man.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Called Jake Harbin?
- 14:09Speaker 13: Harbin?
- 14:10Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, I've heard of him. Well, he's the man
- 14:14Speaker 4: who tried to kill you. What?
- 14:18Speaker 6: How do you know?
- 14:19Speaker 4: He's here as a deputy with a warrant for you.
- 14:22Speaker 4: Better alive. A warrant signed by the sheriff of Baker City.
- 14:28Speaker 13: Oh.
- 14:30Speaker 6: What's the warrant for, Marshal?
- 14:33Speaker 4: Murder. But it didn't say who.
- 14:38Speaker 8: No.
- 14:40Speaker 6: It didn't have to.
- 14:41Speaker 9: Not if Ben Goddard signed it. It's for the murder
- 14:45Speaker 9: of Jim Turner, Marshal.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Oh. How did you do it, Lee?
- 14:51Speaker 6: I killed him. He tried to shoot me in the
- 14:53Speaker 6: back and missed.
- 14:54Speaker 10: Well, that doesn't exactly make it murder, does it?
- 14:57Speaker 9: His old man owns Baker City, Doc, and he owns
- 15:00Speaker 9: the sheriff and Jake Harbin along with it.
- 15:02Speaker 6: That makes it murder. Oh, I see.
- 15:05Speaker 4: Is that why you left Baker City, Lee?
- 15:07Speaker 6: They'd have killed me if I hadn't.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Well, what if you go back there and stand trial?
- 15:12Speaker 9: Old man Turner'd run that trial, Marshal. I'd hang sure. No,
- 15:17Speaker 9: I won't go back.
- 15:19Speaker 6: I'll die here first.
- 15:20Speaker 10: Well, I don't blame you, Matt. It'd be legal murder,
- 15:23Speaker 10: that's what.
- 15:24Speaker 7: It isn't legal to fix a trial and hang an
- 15:26Speaker 7: innocent man, Doc.
- 15:27Speaker 6: That's what had happened, though.
- 15:29Speaker 10: You're not thinking of turning him over to this so-called.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Deputy, are you, Matt?
- 15:34Speaker 7: Look, Lee, I believe you, and I trust you.
- 15:39Speaker 6: Thanks, Marshal.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Now, tell me something. Do you trust me? I sure do.
- 15:45Speaker 6: Of course.
- 15:46Speaker 7: Why?
- 15:47Speaker 4: You may not like what I'm going to do. What, Marshal?
- 15:53Speaker 4: I'm putting you under arrest, Lee. Right now.
- 15:57Speaker 6: Under arrest?
- 15:58Speaker 4: What for? I don't know. Horse thieving? Horse thieving? It'll do.
- 16:06Speaker 4: You're my prisoner now, Lee. My prisoner. Now, come on.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Let's go to jail.
- 16:17Speaker 6: I don't know. I like being a horse thief, Marshal.
- 16:20Speaker 7: Well, it beats being a murderer, Lee. And besides, I
- 16:23Speaker 7: kind of doubt that we'll hang you for it.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Marshal.
- 16:28Speaker 13: What?
- 16:29Speaker 6: Look, there's Jake Harmon.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I see him.
- 16:34Speaker 6: I'd feel safer if you gave me my gun back.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Prisoners can't carry guns, Lee. It wouldn't look right. Be afraid.
- 16:42Speaker 7: Well, Lee. The marshal talked you to coming back.
- 16:45Speaker 6: To Baker City and stand in trial. Still an old
- 16:49Speaker 6: man Turner's payroll, ain't you, Jake?
- 16:50Speaker 4: I don't take no back talk from no murderer.
- 16:52Speaker 9: Why'd you try to ambush me the other morning, Jake?
- 16:55Speaker 9: Afraid to face me?
- 16:56Speaker 4: I got a warrant for you, dead or alive. Why
- 16:59Speaker 4: should I take any chances? Nobody cares how you die.
- 17:03Speaker 4: I care, Harbin.
- 17:04Speaker 7: Well, you can't stand in the way of a legal warrant, marshal.
- 17:08Speaker 7: And you'll see as soon as you get that telegram
- 17:10Speaker 7: from the sheriff.
- 17:11Speaker 4: It's too late, Harbin.
- 17:14Speaker 6: What's too late?
- 17:14Speaker 4: I just arrested Lee myself. He's my prisoner now. You what?
- 17:19Speaker 7: And as long as he's my prisoner, nobody touches him.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Warrant or no?
- 17:22Speaker 7: You're being tricky, Marshal. What'd you arrest him for? He
- 17:26Speaker 7: ain't done nothing. Might be hard to prove, but anyway,
- 17:28Speaker 7: I'm holding him for a horse, Stephen. Now get out
- 17:31Speaker 7: of the way. I'm taking him to jail. You're forgetting
- 17:35Speaker 7: I can kill him anytime I want for free.
- 17:38Speaker 4: Like right now, maybe.
- 17:39Speaker 8: Duck, Lee.
- 17:39Speaker 4: What? Were you hit, Lee?
- 17:46Speaker 10: No.
- 17:48Speaker 6: But it was mighty close, Marshal.
- 17:50Speaker 4: I didn't think he'd try it.
- 17:52Speaker 6: You got him just in time. The next shot, he'd
- 17:56Speaker 6: have killed me.
- 17:57Speaker 4: They sure don't care much how they do things, where
- 17:58Speaker 4: you come from, do they, Lee?
- 18:01Speaker 6: There's gonna be trouble now, Marshal.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Real trouble.
- 18:04Speaker 5: THE END.
- 18:13Speaker 7: It seemed only fair to let the sheriff of Baker
- 18:15Speaker 7: City know that his deputy.
- 18:17Speaker 4: Had been killed.
- 18:18Speaker 7: So I sent him another telegram. And I soon got
- 18:21Speaker 7: a reply. Ben Goddard himself was coming to Dodge. The
- 18:29Speaker 7: day he was due to arrive, I sent Chester to
- 18:32Speaker 7: the stage while Lee Prentiss and I waited in the
- 18:34Speaker 7: lobby of the Dodge house, along with a couple of
- 18:37Speaker 7: friends who thought it might be interesting to see how
- 18:40Speaker 7: Sheriff Goddard was going to handle the situation.
- 18:44Speaker 4: The stage pulled in about noon.
- 18:46Speaker 7: And a few minutes later, Chester and the sheriff walked
- 18:49Speaker 7: into the hotel lobby where we were standing.
- 18:51Speaker 6: Here he is, Mr.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Dillon. Hello, Sheriff. You're Marshal Dillon. And this is Mr. Green.
- 19:04Speaker 4: He owns the Dodge House. And Mr. Jonas, one of
- 19:08Speaker 4: our leading businessmen. Gentlemen, nice to know you. And you
- 19:12Speaker 4: know Lee Prentiss. I sure do.
- 19:16Speaker 6: You're going to a lot of trouble, Goddard. You an
- 19:19Speaker 6: old man, Turner?
- 19:21Speaker 4: It's worth it.
- 19:22Speaker 13: Getting you back where you belong. You'll hang sure now.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Lee didn't kill Jake Harbin, Sheriff. No? I did. What?
- 19:33Speaker 4: He tried to shoot Lee in the back.
- 19:36Speaker 13: What difference does it make? He's wanted, dead or alive.
- 19:41Speaker 13: What are you interfering in this for, Marshal? You got
- 19:44Speaker 13: no respect for the law?
- 19:46Speaker 7: Not for your kind of law. Anyway, Lee's wanted... in Dodge,
- 19:50Speaker 7: and he's staying here.
- 19:51Speaker 4: What about my warrant? You're claiming it ain't legal?
- 19:55Speaker 7: You can't arrest a man that I've got under arrest.
- 19:59Speaker 4: You're protecting him, ain't you? What'd you arrest him for?
- 20:05Speaker 4: Stealing horses? I don't believe it.
- 20:09Speaker 11: I'm bringing the charges, Sheriff. It was my horses he stole.
- 20:15Speaker 13: Well, I thought you owned this hotel, Green.
- 20:18Speaker 4: What are you doing with horses?
- 20:20Speaker 11: Well, I also own a little ranch outside of town.
- 20:23Speaker 6: I raise horses.
- 20:26Speaker 13: Maybe, but I know you're lying about Lee. Am I?
- 20:30Speaker 4: Of course you are.
- 20:33Speaker 13: Marshal Dillon, you ain't very smart.
- 20:35Speaker 4: No? You'll have to bring Lee to trial, won't you?
- 20:40Speaker 8: Of course.
- 20:41Speaker 13: You think Green here is going to swear to that story,
- 20:44Speaker 13: under oath?
- 20:46Speaker 11: You may be right, Sheriff. I might have to change
- 20:49Speaker 11: my mind once I get on the stand. It might
- 20:53Speaker 11: be I couldn't swear to it.
- 20:55Speaker 13: I didn't think so. That trial won't last long, and
- 21:00Speaker 13: when it's over, I'll take Lee back to Baker City.
- 21:03Speaker 10: Marshal Dillon.
- 21:04Speaker 4: Yes, Mr. Jonas. What is it?
- 21:08Speaker 6: There's something I haven't mentioned.
- 21:11Speaker 10: Oh?
- 21:12Speaker 8: I kind of figured I'd wait till Lee's trial was
- 21:14Speaker 8: over before I did.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Well, go ahead, Mr.
- 21:17Speaker 13: Jonas.
- 21:19Speaker 8: Well, the other day, Lee came into my store, and
- 21:23Speaker 8: I went out back to fetch him a sack of grain.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Is that so? He didn't know I was watching, but
- 21:30Speaker 4: I watched.
- 21:31Speaker 8: And I saw him take a handful of money out
- 21:34Speaker 8: of my cash box.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Now, wait a minute. Mr. Jonas, are you charging Lee
- 21:38Speaker 4: with robbery?
- 21:39Speaker 8: No, not yet, Marshal. I'll wait and see if he
- 21:44Speaker 8: gets off for horse stealing first.
- 21:47Speaker 7: Well, Lee, looks like you're in for nothing but.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Trials and re-arrests. And more trials?
- 21:55Speaker 7: That could go on for a long, long time.
- 21:59Speaker 11: As long as his friends hold out, Marshal.
- 22:02Speaker 6: And Lee's got quite a few of them in Dodge.
- 22:06Speaker 4: Why, you're a pack of crooks cheating the law. That's
- 22:11Speaker 4: what you are. Including you, Marshal? My prisoner, Sheriff. I
- 22:16Speaker 4: won't stand for it, I tell you. What are you
- 22:18Speaker 4: going to do about it?
- 22:19Speaker 13: We'd like to tell old man Turner about this.
- 22:21Speaker 6: You won't dare tell him, Goddard. You're licked and you
- 22:24Speaker 6: know it.
- 22:24Speaker 9: Turner will have you run out of town if you're
- 22:26Speaker 9: fool enough to go back.
- 22:30Speaker 4: Marshal, I got to take Lee. I got to... It's
- 22:35Speaker 4: Lee's life or your job, huh?
- 22:40Speaker 7: All right, Sheriff, take him. But you'll have to kill
- 22:44Speaker 7: me first. Or there's a train east in about an hour.
- 22:52Speaker 4: So make up your mind, Sheriff.
- 23:02Speaker 6: Want me to follow him, Mr.
- 23:03Speaker 8: Dillon?
- 23:03Speaker 4: No, Chester, he'll leave.
- 23:05Speaker 6: Marshal, gentlemen. I wish I knew how to tell you.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Lee.
- 23:12Speaker 6: Yes, Marshal.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Go on home.
- 23:16Speaker 7: But remember, you're still under arrest. And you're gonna stay
- 23:20Speaker 7: that way... until old man Turner's in his grave.
