- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:33Have you ever watched a movie and at
- 0:36the end of the movie just felt like,
- 0:38what did I just watch?
- 0:40What was that?
- 0:42Sometimes movies that defy genre conventions, sometimes movies
- 0:45that are just really weird.
- 0:48And as somebody who kind of teaches the
- 0:50Bible, sometimes I'm always skittish about talking about
- 0:52movies that I've seen because it can come
- 0:54across as an endorsement.
- 0:56Sometimes these movies have inappropriate content, etc.
- 0:58Okay, so stick with me here.
- 0:59I'm not endorsing this movie, but this is
- 1:01one of those movies that I watched.
- 1:03And then at the end, I was just
- 1:03like, what did I just watch?
- 1:05Bugonia.
- 1:06It's up for an Oscar or several Oscars,
- 1:10I think.
- 1:11And by the time this episode comes out,
- 1:12maybe the Oscars will have already happened and
- 1:15we'll know more about it.
- 1:16But it stars a couple of actors who
- 1:18I really like.
- 1:19I really like Jesse Plemons and I really
- 1:21like Emma Stone and they're kind of the
- 1:23two leads.
- 1:24So I was like, let's check this out.
- 1:27I'm not going to spoil a ton of
- 1:28the movie, but there's this one moment where
- 1:31Emma Stone's character who's like this corporate CEO,
- 1:34right?
- 1:34She's the peak of corporate achievement in America.
- 1:37She literally gets into like a physical fight
- 1:39with Teddy, Jesse Plemons' character.
- 1:42And while they're fighting, just kind of comes
- 1:44out of her soul.
- 1:45She just says, you can't beat me because
- 1:48you're a loser and I'm a winner.
- 1:51And that's life.
- 1:53Oh my gosh.
- 1:55You can't beat me because you're a loser
- 1:57and I'm a winner and that's life.
- 2:01And speaking of inappropriate things, the actual quote
- 2:03has some emphasis that I will not repeat
- 2:06verbatim.
- 2:09But doesn't that encapsulate something about the American
- 2:12experience and the corporate world experience?
- 2:14That there's winners and there's losers and some
- 2:16people make it and some people don't and
- 2:18it's dog-eat-dog and that's just how
- 2:21it is.
- 2:21That's life.
- 2:23Well, when we look at the scriptures, Jesus
- 2:26invites us into something rather different and that's
- 2:29not a surprise for anyone who follows Jesus,
- 2:31but it can be a point of tension
- 2:33when we think about kind of the arc
- 2:35of our career.
- 2:36So in this series, we've been talking about
- 2:39the arc of our career over time.
- 2:41Like we have callings from God that may
- 2:43change over time and then formation.
- 2:45There's something that God's doing in us.
- 2:47And in this episode, I kind of want
- 2:48to turn the corner from formation to service.
- 2:51So you're going to end the series by
- 2:53talking about service and love.
- 2:55And we already got started in that in
- 2:57our previous episode where we talked about how
- 2:59one way to grow in humility, one way
- 3:01to participate with God in the formation of
- 3:04the character of humility is to choose to
- 3:07serve and particularly to serve in hidden ways.
- 3:11But now I kind of want to go
- 3:12back to an earlier episode from the calling
- 3:15section where I talked about Matthew 25 and
- 3:18Jesus's parable of the talents.
- 3:19We won't reread the whole thing, but we
- 3:22talked about how there was this sense of
- 3:25Jesus looking for a particular response from people.
- 3:28And he would say this line, you have
- 3:31been faithful with little.
- 3:32I will set you over much.
- 3:34You have been faithful with little.
- 3:36I will set you over much.
- 3:38This sense of like progressive responsibility.
- 3:41And that's even a phrase that's sometimes used
- 3:43in our careers to kind of evaluate the
- 3:45arc of someone's career.
- 3:46A hiring manager will be looking at a
- 3:48resume and they'll be looking for, has this
- 3:51person demonstrated progressively responsible work experience, progressively
- 3:56responsible work experience, that sense of, okay, were
- 4:00they in one level and they did okay
- 4:01with that.
- 4:02And then they got promoted into another level
- 4:03of responsibility and they did okay with that.
- 4:05And then they got promoted into another level.
- 4:06That's what hiring managers looking for to say,
- 4:09okay, maybe they can handle this next level
- 4:11that I'm considering hiring for progressively responsible work
- 4:15experience.
- 4:16And so there's this dynamic, even within the
- 4:18scriptures, even within that Matthew 25 story that
- 4:20we're familiar with, that Jesus kind of endorses
- 4:23this way of thinking, that there is an
- 4:25idea of progressive responsibility and it's rooted in
- 4:28our character, right?
- 4:29Formation.
- 4:30God is making us into more capable people,
- 4:33people who are more capable of serving and
- 4:36loving others over time.
- 4:38And as we do that in our work,
- 4:39hopefully people in positions of decision-making authority
- 4:42will notice that and give us increasing responsibility
- 4:45over time.
- 4:47Okay, so that's that's kind of one piece
- 4:50of context as we think about the arc
- 4:53of our career.
- 4:54But there's another piece of context that I
- 4:56want to look at today.
- 4:57And that's when we don't necessarily always move
- 5:00up and up and up.
- 5:02We don't necessarily always become winners in the
- 5:05corporate ladder, right?
- 5:07You could pervert what Jesus is saying about
- 5:09progressive work responsibility and sort of just marry
- 5:12it to that dog-eat-dog vision expressed
- 5:14in that line from Emma Stone's character in
- 5:17Begonia.
- 5:19I am a winner and you're a loser.
- 5:21That's life.
- 5:22You can kind of marry Jesus's vision to
- 5:24that in a kind of health and wealth
- 5:25way and say, if you follow Jesus, if
- 5:28you're putting your faith in him, then you'll
- 5:30get that promotion.
- 5:31Then you'll get more responsibility.
- 5:32Then your career arc will be up and
- 5:34to the right.
- 5:35There are teachers who say that.
- 5:37We could fall into thinking that ourselves, even
- 5:39if we maybe don't say it out loud
- 5:41that crassly, we might think if I'm really
- 5:44doing what I'm supposed to, I should be
- 5:46rising through the ranks in my company, in
- 5:48my career.
- 5:48That's what the world should give me, because
- 5:50that's life.
- 5:52I'm holding up my end of the bargain.
- 5:54And so my career should hold up its
- 5:55side of the bargain.
- 5:56Again, we can definitely fall into this as
- 5:58Americans, where there's a big emphasis on individualism
- 6:00and being enterprising and making the most of
- 6:03yourself and taking advantage of every opportunity.
- 6:06And so I think it's really important for
- 6:08us to to look at this other side
- 6:10of the teaching of scripture, which is this
- 6:13downward movement that Jesus models for us.
- 6:16So instead of thinking about just moving up
- 6:19the corporate ladder, right, progressively responsible work experience,
- 6:24we're going to look at how Jesus models
- 6:26progressively humble service, progressively humble service.
- 6:31And we're going to go to a famous
- 6:33chapter, Philippians chapter two.
- 6:35So I'm going to actually take some time
- 6:37to read a longer stretch here and then
- 6:38dig into just a few parts of it.
- 6:40So this is Philippians chapter two, starting in
- 6:43verse one.
- 6:44Paul's writing to the Christians at Philippi.
- 6:48Therefore, if you have any encouragement from being
- 6:50united with Christ, if any comfort from his
- 6:53love, if any common sharing in the spirit,
- 6:56if any tenderness and compassion, then make my
- 6:59joy complete by being like-minded, having the
- 7:02same love, being one in spirit and of
- 7:06one mind.
- 7:07Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain
- 7:10conceit.
- 7:11Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not
- 7:15looking to your own interests, but each of
- 7:18you to the interests of the others.
- 7:20In your relationships with one another, have the
- 7:22same mindset as Christ Jesus, who being in
- 7:26very nature God, did not consider equality with
- 7:29God something to be used to his own
- 7:30advantage.
- 7:32Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the
- 7:34very nature of a servant being made in
- 7:37human likeness and being found in appearance as
- 7:40a man.
- 7:40He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death,
- 7:44even death on a cross.
- 7:46Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place
- 7:49and gave to him the name that is
- 7:51above every name, that at the name of
- 7:53Jesus, every knee should bow in heaven and
- 7:56on earth and under the earth and every
- 7:59tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to
- 8:02the glory of God, the father.
- 8:05Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always
- 8:07obeyed, not only in my presence, but now
- 8:09much more in my absence, continue to work
- 8:12out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
- 8:14for it is God who works in you
- 8:17to will and to act in order to
- 8:20fulfill his good purpose.
- 8:24Okay, it's such a rich passage.
- 8:27We could do a whole series just on
- 8:28this single passage, but I want to pull
- 8:30out a few notes.
- 8:32So one is if we go right to
- 8:34the heart of the passage, right?
- 8:36It says that Jesus made himself nothing, taking
- 8:40the very nature of a servant being made
- 8:43in human likeness.
- 8:44That's Philippians 2, 7.
- 8:46Did you catch that?
- 8:47Taking on the very nature of a servant
- 8:50being made in human likeness.
- 8:52There's a teaching here about what it means
- 8:54to be human.
- 8:55Going back to a different series, we talked
- 8:57a lot about theological anthropology.
- 8:59Paul is giving us a theological anthropology here,
- 9:01an understanding of what it means to be
- 9:03human in the light of God's grace and
- 9:06action.
- 9:06And what he's saying is that human, humanity,
- 9:10humanness is about service.
- 9:14Taking the very nature of a servant being
- 9:16made in human likeness.
- 9:18We become most ourselves when we become servants.
- 9:24It's not like some people get to graduate
- 9:26from being servants and there's some sort of
- 9:28super elite human class.
- 9:29Again, that's what the culture tells us, that
- 9:31you graduate from being a servant to being
- 9:34a master.
- 9:35But that's not what scripture teaches.
- 9:37Scripture teaches that it's in our nature.
- 9:39God created us to serve.
- 9:41We become most ourselves when we serve.
- 9:44And just like with any other aspect of
- 9:46who we are, that means that the path
- 9:47of deepest joy and fulfillment and life is
- 9:51found in service.
- 9:52We don't actually miss out when we embrace
- 9:55service.
- 9:55We actually get in on what matters most
- 9:58about being human.
- 9:59So just wanted to pull that out.
- 10:01That's, that's really significant.
- 10:02And what's also really significant is that Jesus
- 10:05became human, right?
- 10:06That's what this verse is saying.
- 10:07Jesus made himself nothing by taking the very
- 10:10nature of a servant.
- 10:11Jesus became human.
- 10:12And as one past trino says, he'd never
- 10:14got better.
- 10:15It's not like Jesus descended from heaven, became
- 10:17human, and then went back to not being
- 10:19human after.
- 10:19Jesus is still a human right now.
- 10:21He decided to become human forever.
- 10:25That's incredible.
- 10:25That means that Jesus still has the nature
- 10:27of a servant.
- 10:28Jesus still serves.
- 10:31Jesus has forever and eternity adopted a mode
- 10:35of being, which means he serves others.
- 10:38For him, there's no contradiction between that and
- 10:41the highest glories of heaven.
- 10:43And that's what the rest of the passage
- 10:45teaches.
- 10:45So then jumping down verses nine through 11,
- 10:47it says, therefore, God exalted him to the
- 10:50highest place and gave him the name that
- 10:52is above every name.
- 10:54Jesus's high, glorious honor that he receives from
- 10:58the father is totally synthesized, totally compatible with
- 11:02this heart of service.
- 11:04So then what, what does that mean for
- 11:06us?
- 11:06That means if we aspire to what's best
- 11:09for us, if we aspire to glory and
- 11:12honor and life for eternity, right?
- 11:15If we're, if we're the most ambitious we
- 11:17can possibly be, the path for us to
- 11:20that life is the path of service.
- 11:23Okay.
- 11:24And so that's why at the beginning of
- 11:26the passage, Paul emphasizes humility so much, right?
- 11:31So he kind of does this, this preamble.
- 11:33He says, if you have any encouragement from
- 11:34being united with Christ, if any comfort from
- 11:36his love, if any common sharing in the
- 11:37spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, basically he's
- 11:39saying like, if your life in God means
- 11:41anything at all, he says, then make my
- 11:43joy complete.
- 11:44How, how are they going to make Paul's
- 11:46joy complete?
- 11:47Paul, Paul speaking to them as kind of
- 11:48a spiritual father, someone who's deeply invested in
- 11:50their formation in becoming more like Jesus, and
- 11:53he's like, nothing would make me more joyful
- 11:55than if you became more who you were
- 11:57meant to be in God.
- 11:58So how can you do that?
- 11:59Well, here's the answer.
- 12:01By being like-minded, having the same love,
- 12:05being one in spirit and of one mind,
- 12:08doing nothing out of selfish ambition or vain
- 12:10conceit, in humility, valuing others above yourselves, not
- 12:14looking to your own interests, but each of
- 12:16you to the interests of the others.
- 12:18The way that we become who we are
- 12:21most meant to be is by growing in
- 12:23humility.
- 12:25Again, this, this is like so reversed from
- 12:28how we normally think of achievement, of growth,
- 12:32of life.
- 12:33Uh, if anything in our culture, you eventually
- 12:36get to the level where you don't have
- 12:37to be humble at all, where you can
- 12:38just brag about it and revel in it.
- 12:41And, and I don't want to, I don't
- 12:42want to kick someone while he's down, but
- 12:45you know, that, that Olympian, uh, who was
- 12:47named the quad God, uh, his full name.
- 12:51I'm pulling it up here.
- 12:52Cause I don't even remember.
- 12:53I only remember Elia Malanin, Elia Malanin.
- 12:56I'm not sure if I pronounced that correctly,
- 12:57but he was called the quad God.
- 12:59Right.
- 12:59He's like, he's like the Simone Biles of
- 13:01figure skating.
- 13:01He's changing the rules.
- 13:02He's innovating.
- 13:03And he came in eighth place in the
- 13:06competition.
- 13:06He didn't even medal.
- 13:07Uh, and there's this kind of humbling of
- 13:10him that's taken place.
- 13:11Right.
- 13:11Um, again, it's, it's on a global stage.
- 13:13It's not really fair that he gets to,
- 13:15you know, the spotlights on him when he
- 13:17fails.
- 13:17We all have instances like this in our
- 13:19lives where we think we're all that, but
- 13:21then we're humbled.
- 13:22But you know what that means for the
- 13:25so-called quad God, you know what that
- 13:26means for him?
- 13:28It means that he's actually moved closer to
- 13:32what it means to be fully human.
- 13:34I actually am encouraged for his soul.
- 13:36I don't know anything about his soul.
- 13:37I'm not in a position to judge, but
- 13:38I bet that this experience of being humbled
- 13:40will be good for him.
- 13:42Right.
- 13:42For somebody who's embraced a title, that's kind
- 13:45of a, maybe a little bit grandiose, I'm
- 13:47the quad God.
- 13:48And he, you know, he would wear that
- 13:49proudly.
- 13:49He like had that on his workout shirt.
- 13:52Being humbled might not be such a bad
- 13:53thing.
- 13:54This might be good for him in the
- 13:56long run.
- 13:56Right.
- 13:57I heard one of the commentators before he
- 13:59started making all those errors say, you deserve
- 14:01it.
- 14:01Call yourself the quad God or something to
- 14:03that effect.
- 14:04And it turns out none of us, none
- 14:07of us are gods.
- 14:08None of us are super humans.
- 14:09Even the Olympians, they come up short sometimes.
- 14:13And of course, if he's back in four
- 14:14years, I'll be cheering for him and hoping
- 14:15he does better and hoping he medals.
- 14:17But the, my point is that he's actually
- 14:20probably got a better shot at becoming more
- 14:23glorious long-term as a human being because
- 14:27of this experience of humbling.
- 14:30Same thing for us.
- 14:31The passage, when it says, if you really
- 14:33want to become human, you've got to embrace
- 14:35humility, then what does it do?
- 14:37It points us to an experience of humbling.
- 14:40Specifically Jesus' experience of humbling.
- 14:43That Jesus, this is verse eight, humbled himself
- 14:46by becoming obedient to death, even death on
- 14:50a cross.
- 14:52Jesus humbled himself to the lowest point of
- 14:56human experience, death itself and death on a
- 14:59cross, a shameful form of crucifixion, a shameful
- 15:02form of execution, crucifixion.
- 15:04He humbled himself to that point.
- 15:06And he was exalted at the most glorious
- 15:08experience of life possible.
- 15:10It's the same pattern for us.
- 15:12If we really want that glorious life, we
- 15:15humble ourselves.
- 15:17So how do we do that?
- 15:18How do we humble ourselves?
- 15:20Well, in our, in our last episode, we
- 15:22talked about how the discipline of service, especially
- 15:24service in secrecy can help us with that,
- 15:26but I want to focus on that word
- 15:28obedient.
- 15:29It says Jesus became obedient to death.
- 15:31It's kind of a poetic way of saying
- 15:33Jesus was obedient to God and that God
- 15:35was asking him to lay down his life.
- 15:38There's this reciprocal relationship between humility and obedience.
- 15:42So just like, you know, we, we kind
- 15:44of think about this in that arc of
- 15:46being progressively responsible at work, progressively responsible work
- 15:50experience.
- 15:50We think there's kind of a reciprocal relationship
- 15:52between responsibility and honor, right?
- 15:57You're responsible with little, therefore you're honored with
- 15:59much.
- 16:00You're responsible with that much more.
- 16:01Therefore you're honored with even more.
- 16:02You're responsible with that much more.
- 16:03Therefore you're honored with even more.
- 16:05Reciprocal relationship between responsibility and honor.
- 16:09And that's often the way we think about
- 16:10it in our culture.
- 16:11It's kind of like, ah, it doesn't matter
- 16:12if you're humble, as long as you're effective,
- 16:14right?
- 16:14If you can do a quad jump like
- 16:16that, you're the quad God.
- 16:17It doesn't matter if you have an inner
- 16:19character of humility.
- 16:21But what we're invited into is instead of
- 16:24thinking about a reciprocal relationship between responsibility and
- 16:27honor, even though that is there and God
- 16:30sometimes even is in that dynamic himself, thinking
- 16:33about a reciprocal relationship between humility and obedience,
- 16:37right?
- 16:38You're, you're humbled.
- 16:40And so you obey God because you realize
- 16:42he's God and you're not.
- 16:44And then through that experience of humility, you
- 16:47actually become more humble.
- 16:49And then you're able to obey God again.
- 16:52Another way of saying the same thing is
- 16:53there's a reciprocal relationship between humility and service.
- 16:57Again, Jesus is taking the very nature of
- 16:59a servant.
- 17:00Going to the cross was the greatest act
- 17:01of service in human history.
- 17:04So there's a relationship between humility and service
- 17:06where you humble yourself so you serve others.
- 17:10And then through that experience by God's grace,
- 17:12you're actually humbler.
- 17:14And so then you're able to serve others
- 17:15more because you have that posture of humility,
- 17:17seeking to serve others.
- 17:20Progressively humble service is God's vision of really
- 17:24making it in human life.
- 17:27Okay.
- 17:27So how do we, how do we make
- 17:28this practical?
- 17:29How do, how do we bring this home?
- 17:31Well, I think there's a question that we
- 17:33can ask ourselves.
- 17:33When we think about our career, we can
- 17:36ask ourselves the question, how can I get
- 17:38ahead?
- 17:39Again, that's the, the, uh, Michelle's CEO in
- 17:41Begonia Emma Stone.
- 17:43You're a loser and I'm a winner and
- 17:44that's life.
- 17:46Uh, how can I get ahead?
- 17:47And I fall into this all the time.
- 17:49I'm thinking about how I'm going to do
- 17:50on my review and what's next.
- 17:51And there's, there's a good place for self
- 17:53-advocacy.
- 17:54But the more important question, the question that
- 17:56gets us closer to what it really means
- 17:57to be human is how can I help?
- 18:01We were less concerned about ourselves, less concerned
- 18:03about how we're getting ahead and just more
- 18:05concerned about how to serve, how to serve
- 18:08the mission of our organizations, how to serve
- 18:10our clients, how to serve our colleagues, and
- 18:12how to serve our bosses.
- 18:14How can I help?
- 18:16That's a question that will guide us closer
- 18:18to what it means to be truly human.
- 18:23Lord Jesus, thank you for your love.
- 18:25Thank you that you did lay down your
- 18:27life for us, that for all the ways
- 18:29that we fail to practice humility and to
- 18:32love and serve others, uh, your gift of
- 18:35your life on the cross covers our sins
- 18:37and draws us into forgiveness in life.
- 18:40We pray that you would draw us into
- 18:42that life of humility like yours, that we
- 18:44would see that we're not missing out on
- 18:46anything by embracing progressively humble service.
- 18:51Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 18:52do our work with you.
- 18:59Thanks for listening.
