- 0:00Speaker 1: Panic, chaos and injuries at the Dubai airport overnight, and
- 0:05Speaker 1: Shah had drone striking a luxury hotel in Dubai's Palm Jumira,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Or seeing the Middle East absorb a wave of Iranian
- 0:16Speaker 2: retaliation strikes or hitting countries that host US military bases
- 0:21Speaker 2: and reaching a port in Dubai. It's one of the
- 0:23Speaker 2: largest and busiest ports in the Middle East. For how
- 0:26Speaker 2: Golf states are reacting, Let's go to CNN's Paula Hancocks
- 0:30Speaker 2: in Dubai. So, Paula, bring us the latest. How are
- 0:33Speaker 2: they reacting to this?
- 0:36Speaker 3: Well, Pamela, We've really seen no let up in the
- 0:39Speaker 3: retaliation from Iran to many of these Gulf nations, and
- 0:44Speaker 3: the reaction from the governments is one of anger. These
- 0:49Speaker 3: are Golf nations who, for the most part, had said
- 0:52Speaker 3: that their military basis could not be used if there
- 0:55Speaker 3: were to be this US Israeli attack on Iran. They
- 0:59Speaker 3: have said that their airspace could not be used. They
- 1:02Speaker 3: had also been lobbying the US president behind the scenes
- 1:06Speaker 3: and quite publicly not to take the military route, but
- 1:10Speaker 3: to continue with diplomacy. So countries here in the Gulf
- 1:15Speaker 3: really felt like they had distanced themselves with what has
- 1:19Speaker 3: happened over the past twenty four to thirty six hours,
- 1:22Speaker 3: but it doesn't appear to have made any difference. Iran
- 1:25Speaker 3: still carrying out these retaliatory attacks, missiles and drones coming
- 1:30Speaker 3: into these Golf nations, nations which are very unaccustomed to
- 1:35Speaker 3: being part of this kind of large, unprecedented military attack.
- 1:41Speaker 3: This here in Dubai, I mean, this is an international
- 1:45Speaker 3: global hub, This is a global commerce hub. It is
- 1:49Speaker 3: an area where tourists come and certainly it is very
- 1:53Speaker 3: unprecedented to see people rushing to parking lots. There are
- 1:57Speaker 3: no air raid shelters officially, but trying to get away
- 2:02Speaker 3: from the incoming missiles. Now, just in the UAE alone,
- 2:06Speaker 3: they have said, and this is several hours ago, so
- 2:08Speaker 3: this number will be higher. Now at least one hundred
- 2:11Speaker 3: and thirty seven missiles two hundred plus drones have been
- 2:15Speaker 3: intercepted by the defense systems here. Now we have been
- 2:21Speaker 3: hearing from officials that they do have strong air defense systems,
- 2:25Speaker 3: that they are able to intercept what is coming in
- 2:29Speaker 3: from Iran. But as I say, there is across the
- 2:32Speaker 3: Gulf nations being strong condemnation against Tehran that they have
- 2:36Speaker 3: been targeted, some also saying that they reserve the right
- 2:41Speaker 3: to retaliate when questioned, though those officials do not enlarge
- 2:46Speaker 3: on what they mean by that. We did hear one
- 2:49Speaker 3: Emirati official saying they are not just going to sit
- 2:52Speaker 3: by idly and watch this happen, but it is not
- 2:55Speaker 3: clear at this point apart from the defensive nature of
- 2:59Speaker 3: what they are doing, what more they could do against
- 3:02Speaker 3: these strikes.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Let me bring in riem Bin Tibrahim al Kashimi. She's
- 3:07Speaker 1: the Member of State for International Cooperation for the UAE,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and thank you for joining us from Dubai this morning.
- 3:17Speaker 1: It is hard to overstate just how shocking these images
- 3:22Speaker 1: are to UA residents who are used to this country
- 3:25Speaker 1: being a beacon of safety instability, as Iran now threatens
- 3:30Speaker 1: the quote heaviest offensive in its history following the Supreme
- 3:34Speaker 1: Leader's death. Can you give us the very latest on
- 3:37Speaker 1: the scope and scale of the targets and casualties so
- 3:42Speaker 1: far and what more the UAE is bracing for today.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Thank you very much, Becky for having me, and thank
- 3:51Speaker 4: you for your program as well. It's a really unprecedented
- 3:56Speaker 4: time for us. This is something we've tried to avoid
- 4:00Speaker 4: in the last couple of weeks and months, as we
- 4:03Speaker 4: had encouraged dialogue and de escalation. Unfortunately, we're at a
- 4:08Speaker 4: situation right now where Iran has, through very unjustifiable and
- 4:13Speaker 4: very unlawful measures, taken attacks not just to the UEE,
- 4:17Speaker 4: but also to the rest of the Gulf and beyond.
- 4:21Speaker 4: That is something that we do not accept. We have
- 4:24Speaker 4: one of the best defense systems in the world, and
- 4:27Speaker 4: we are confident that we will be able to continue
- 4:31Speaker 4: to support our infrastructure and protect the people who live here.
- 4:35Speaker 4: I know it's a scary time for a lot of
- 4:37Speaker 4: the residents. You had mentioned that because you're right, we
- 4:40Speaker 4: don't hear these types of loud sounds, but at the
- 4:43Speaker 4: same time, those are sounds of interception, and where there
- 4:47Speaker 4: has been damage, that has been primarily debris, and so
- 4:51Speaker 4: I do think it is important that we reaffirm to
- 4:55Speaker 4: the people of the UAE, both expatriates but also nationals alike,
- 5:00Speaker 4: that we have one of the best air to missile
- 5:04Speaker 4: defense systems in the world, and that we are doing
- 5:07Speaker 4: everything to ensure that we continue to be safe and secure.
- 5:14Speaker 1: These threats from Iran had been telegraphed should they be
- 5:19Speaker 1: attacked by the US. They were on Saturday morning. The
- 5:23Speaker 1: threats were on US basis effectively around this region and
- 5:28Speaker 1: in the UAE, these strikes have been wider than that.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I note the attacks for example on sort of hotels
- 5:39Speaker 1: and civilian infrastructure in the UAE. How much worse do
- 5:45Speaker 1: you fear this could get? And what is your sense
- 5:48Speaker 1: of the targeting here?
- 5:52Speaker 4: So however away they want to move, we will be
- 5:55Speaker 4: ready for that. We of course do not want further escalator.
- 6:00Speaker 4: We are calling for calm and measured responses. But by
- 6:06Speaker 4: the same token, as you noted earlier, over one hundred
- 6:09Speaker 4: and thirty seven ballistic missiles, over two hundred drones that
- 6:13Speaker 4: has been intercepted by the defense system in the UE.
- 6:18Speaker 4: We continue to urge the escalation. We're working with our
- 6:21Speaker 4: partners all around the world and receiving from them assurances
- 6:26Speaker 4: not only of support and coordination, but also severe condemnation.
- 6:30Speaker 4: That this has taken a much larger regional standpoint by
- 6:35Speaker 4: really implicating other countries on the Gulf as well.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And you've urged the escalation, as you say, arguing diplomacy
- 6:45Speaker 1: is the only way forward. Now we've seen official statements
- 6:50Speaker 1: as well from the UA in around the Gulf region
- 6:52Speaker 1: condemning the attacks and a clear message we reserve the
- 6:56Speaker 1: right to retaliate, reim What is that response lightly to
- 7:01Speaker 1: look like.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Well, it depends, Becky, and it's a really fluid and
- 7:08Speaker 4: dynamic situation right now. But rest assured to the people
- 7:13Speaker 4: of this country that we will leave no stone unturned
- 7:16Speaker 4: to make sure that we do defend ourselves and we
- 7:18Speaker 4: are prepared for that. We hope it doesn't come to it,
- 7:22Speaker 4: but by the same token, we're not going to sit
- 7:25Speaker 4: idly by as we continue to be recipients of such
- 7:29Speaker 4: a barrage of attacks that are unlawful and unjustified.
- 7:33Speaker 1: As well as sin He's joining us now live from Doha,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and as you and I speak, I just see comments
- 7:40Speaker 1: in that we are alerting. On CNN, the British Defense
- 7:44Speaker 1: Secretary has described Iran as lashing out indiscriminately across the
- 7:50Speaker 1: Middle East. And what's been happening where you are Bijan?
- 7:56Speaker 5: Yeah, Becky, we might have actually just heard an air
- 7:58Speaker 5: defense missile system above. This one sounded very far away.
- 8:01Speaker 5: Obviously we will go and take cover if these air
- 8:05Speaker 5: defense systems are reacting nearby. But what we started our
- 8:10Speaker 5: day was by witnessing what was a very loud and
- 8:13Speaker 5: extended round of missiles. That was about six hours ago
- 8:18Speaker 5: Ministry of Interior from Qatar saying they successfully intercepted those missiles.
- 8:22Speaker 5: There was debris or shrapnel that fell from one of
- 8:26Speaker 5: those interceptions, falling in the industrial area on the outskirts
- 8:30Speaker 5: of Joha, causing a fire. The ministry also confirmed that
- 8:34Speaker 5: civil defense were on site at that fire working to
- 8:38Speaker 5: put it out and that no injuries there were taking place.
- 8:42Speaker 5: And just on the back of that, numbers from yesterday
- 8:46Speaker 5: from the Ministry they counted sixty five missiles entering the
- 8:50Speaker 5: country from Iran, twelve drones. They say they successfully intercepted
- 8:54Speaker 5: sixty four of those missiles and the eleven of those drones. Obviously,
- 8:58Speaker 5: the big worry here is that trappe and that debris falling.
- 9:02Speaker 5: The last update from the ministry is sixteen injuries. We
- 9:06Speaker 5: haven't received any word on any debts, so we'll continue
- 9:09Speaker 5: to track that as well. I will say the strikes
- 9:12Speaker 5: today have felt a lot different than what.
- 9:14Speaker 6: We witnessed yesterday.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Yesterday we saw and we heard with our own eyes
- 9:18Speaker 5: around a dozen rounds of missiles that kind of came
- 9:22Speaker 5: and went around every fifteen to thirty minutes intermittently throughout
- 9:26Speaker 5: the day.
- 9:27Speaker 6: Today. We saw those first strikes.
- 9:28Speaker 5: About six hours ago, we had eyewitnesses that saw another wave.
- 9:32Speaker 6: We couldn't see or hear that from where we are.
- 9:35Speaker 5: And since it's been a little quiet until we just
- 9:38Speaker 5: heard that last what was a potential air defense system
- 9:41Speaker 5: taking place. It's also worth mentioning that today is Sunday
- 9:45Speaker 5: here in Katar. It's the start of the working week,
- 9:47Speaker 5: but emergency alert systems have gone out telling everyone to
- 9:50Speaker 5: work from home, telling everyone.
- 9:52Speaker 6: To shelter in place.
- 9:53Speaker 5: There is still some traffic, but nowhere near what it
- 9:56Speaker 5: would be on a normal Sunday.
- 9:58Speaker 6: It's very empty right now. And I want to.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Add that the airspace obviously still remains closed. Schools are
- 10:04Speaker 5: shut until further notice, and also all events have been
- 10:10Speaker 5: closed and postponed until further notice. And it's worth missing
- 10:14Speaker 5: that all of these rocket strikes, we believe are heading
- 10:16Speaker 5: to l U Daid Airbase. As you know, it's the
- 10:19Speaker 5: largest US air base in the Middle East. It usually
- 10:22Speaker 5: houses some ten thousand American military personnel. We know over
- 10:26Speaker 5: the last six weeks that number has been dropping. They've
- 10:30Speaker 5: been evacuating non essential personnel, but we've also seen a
- 10:34Speaker 5: military equipment build up at that base. Some air refueled tankers,
- 10:39Speaker 5: some cargo planes have been propping up over there, Becky,
- 10:43Speaker 5: so we'll continue to watch that as well.
