- 1:34Okay, let's get this show kicked off, all
- 1:36right?
- 1:37So this is Inspirations for Your Life, in
- 1:39case you didn't know, and this whole week
- 1:41we've been talking about a very incredible master
- 1:43topic, and that is stop waiting for your
- 1:45life to change.
- 1:48And this is Series 5, Show 33, we're
- 1:51wrapping that up today.
- 1:53Become the person who makes things happen, that's
- 1:55the granular today, Series 5, Show 33, episode
- 1:58number seven, it is Friday, yes, and that
- 2:01means we're ending our master topic, but don't
- 2:03worry, tomorrow we'll be starting a brand new
- 2:05master topic, and this is Inspirations for Your
- 2:09Life.
- 2:09I'm John C.
- 2:11Morley.
- 2:11I am a serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist,
- 2:17video producer, podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, a
- 2:21graduate student at Montclair State University, a passionate
- 2:25lifelong learner, and so grateful now to be
- 2:28a published author.
- 2:30Yes, guys, really grateful for that.
- 2:32So there are people who talk about what
- 2:36should happen, people who wait for somebody else
- 2:39to make it happen, and people who step
- 2:42forward and turn ideas into results.
- 2:45Today, I'm talking about becoming that third person,
- 2:49the one that actually takes the action.
- 2:52This isn't about controlling everything or doing everything
- 2:56yourself, it's about initiative, it's about execution, it's
- 3:04about responsibility.
- 3:05Responsibility, gotta get some water here.
- 3:10And ladies and gentlemen, it's about becoming somebody
- 3:13others know they can count on.
- 3:16Let's get into our 30 points that I
- 3:18think you guys are gonna find really great.
- 3:20Number one, stop waiting to be chosen.
- 3:23You don't always need an invitation before you
- 3:26begin contributing.
- 3:28If you have something worthwhile to offer, stop
- 3:31waiting for somebody else to officially choose you
- 3:34or welcome you.
- 3:37Number two, become an initiator.
- 3:39Initiators don't constantly ask who is going to
- 3:43start.
- 3:44They recognize an opportunity, they seize it, and
- 3:47they create the first moment to do it.
- 3:50Learn to become comfortable taking that first responsible
- 3:54step.
- 3:55You're gonna get a little uncomfortable, so you
- 3:57have to practice getting comfortable being uncomfortable.
- 4:01Number three, see what needs doing.
- 4:04Pay attention, ladies and gentlemen.
- 4:06Sometimes the greatest opportunities aren't hidden.
- 4:10They're sitting directly in front of everyone waiting
- 4:14for somebody willing to notice and act.
- 4:19Powerful.
- 4:20Number four, move without being chased.
- 4:24If somebody constantly has to remind you, follow
- 4:28up with you, or push you forward, you're
- 4:30giving away ownership.
- 4:32Become someone who moves your own needle because
- 4:35you made a commitment to yourself.
- 4:38Number five, bring ideas into reality.
- 4:43Ideas are everywhere.
- 4:44Execution is rarer.
- 4:46Take an idea and ask what concrete action
- 4:49would make and begin the transforming of it
- 4:52into something real.
- 4:54That means taking the thought that you have,
- 4:56the inspired thought, turning it into action.
- 5:00Number six, guys, become known for execution.
- 5:06It's great to be creative, but become known
- 5:09for finishing too.
- 5:11Build a reputation where people know that when
- 5:14you commit to something, progress follows.
- 5:18Yeah.
- 5:20A lot of people get impatient because they're
- 5:22not seeing the progress tomorrow.
- 5:24I think that's a big thing for a
- 5:27lot of people.
- 5:27They're not seeing it tomorrow.
- 5:28So turn conversations into action.
- 5:32Great conversations can create possibilities, but possibilities disappear
- 5:37when nobody acts.
- 5:39Before walking away, determine what happens next.
- 5:44Number eight, close the gap between the idea
- 5:48and the result.
- 5:50I know that's not always comfortable, guys, but
- 5:52you've got to practice getting comfortable being uncomfortable.
- 5:55That's the whole key.
- 5:56The space between having an idea, getting the
- 6:00inspired action to take, and doing it and
- 6:03producing that result is filled with lots of
- 6:06decisions, guys.
- 6:07It sure is.
- 6:08It's filled with work, adjustments, adaptation, and of
- 6:14course, follow through.
- 6:15Learn to operate inside that gap.
- 6:18You can do it.
- 6:19I'm not going to say it's going to
- 6:20be easy.
- 6:21Number nine, create energy around good ideas.
- 6:26When you believe something worthwhile can happen, bring
- 6:31enthusiasm and direction to it.
- 6:33Positive energy combined with action can encourage others
- 6:37to participate.
- 6:40Number 10, guys, be the person who follows
- 6:44through.
- 6:45Plenty of people start enthusiastically.
- 6:48Fewer remain when the excitement disappears.
- 6:52Follow through is where trust is built.
- 6:55And that's something that I know a lot
- 6:57of people have a hard time with.
- 6:59They don't think they can do the right
- 7:00thing.
- 7:02And that's very, very, very, very important to
- 7:08actually understand.
- 7:11Okay?
- 7:11Very important to understand that.
- 7:14Number 11, make useful things happen in your
- 7:18life.
- 7:19See, activity isn't automatically progress.
- 7:22People think it is, but it's not.
- 7:24Focus on the actions that solve problems, that
- 7:27help people, that improve situations, or create something
- 7:30genuinely valuable.
- 7:33Number 12, connect people who should know each
- 7:36other.
- 7:38Sometimes making something happen means recognizing that two
- 7:43people could help each other.
- 7:45Make thoughtful introductions when you genuinely see value
- 7:49for both sides.
- 7:53Number 13, find answers instead of excuses.
- 7:58I said before, if you're not part of
- 8:01the solution, then unfortunately, guys, you're part of
- 8:05the problem.
- 8:08You're part of the problem, and I think
- 8:10that's something that a lot of people hear.
- 8:12They just don't get that.
- 8:16And I know a lot of you are
- 8:18saying to me, John, like, I don't always
- 8:20get this, but I'm here to tell you
- 8:21something, all right?
- 8:22I'm here to tell you that you can
- 8:24make a very big difference in your life,
- 8:26but you have to make the time.
- 8:29You have to decide that you're going to
- 8:32do this.
- 8:32You can't say, well, gee, it didn't work
- 8:34out today, so I give up.
- 8:37No.
- 8:39Try again.
- 8:40You have to retool.
- 8:42When something doesn't work, don't immediately explain why
- 8:45it can't be done.
- 8:47Ask what information, resource, personal, or alternative approach
- 8:52might move things forward.
- 8:56Think about that for a moment.
- 8:59Just ponder that thought, okay?
- 9:03Number 14, bring solutions into the room.
- 9:06Time for some more water.
- 9:12Anyone can point at a problem.
- 9:15Develop the habit of arriving with possible solutions.
- 9:19Thoughtful questions or a path toward the next
- 9:22step is the key, but a lot of
- 9:25people are afraid to take the next step.
- 9:27A lot of people are afraid to be
- 9:29the first ones.
- 9:30They just don't want to do it.
- 9:32Again, not because they don't.
- 9:34It's because they're fearing things.
- 9:37That could be fear of lots of stuff.
- 9:43It's a challenge for a lot of people.
- 9:48I think when you can understand these things,
- 9:52you can be on track with lots of
- 9:55stuff, okay?
- 9:56And you can get answers to things that
- 10:01might have been out there the whole time,
- 10:03but you see, when our mind becomes in
- 10:08alignment with the energy to produce our outcome,
- 10:13our outcome changes from being in here to
- 10:17coming into the real world.
- 10:19A wise person once said to me, John,
- 10:22in order to create something in the real
- 10:24world, you have to first create it in
- 10:26your mind, then you can create it in
- 10:28real life.
- 10:29Number 15, don't wait for instructions.
- 10:33When the appropriate action is clear and within
- 10:36your responsibility, don't always wait for somebody to
- 10:39tell you exactly what to do.
- 10:42Use judgment and initiative.
- 10:45Number 16, create momentum for others, okay?
- 10:49Your initiative can help other people move too.
- 10:52One person taking action can turn a stagnant
- 10:55situation into something everyone suddenly believes can succeed.
- 11:01Number 17, make yourself useful.
- 11:05Ask what you can contribute, skills, knowledge, relationships,
- 11:10experience, organization, or simply a willingness to help
- 11:14can make you valuable in almost any situation
- 11:17here.
- 11:19Number 18, I want you to turn your
- 11:22obstacles into assignments.
- 11:26When an obstacle appears, don't immediately treat it
- 11:30as a stop sign.
- 11:32Treat it as something to understand, investigate, solve,
- 11:36or work around.
- 11:38Responsibility.
- 11:40Number 19, take responsibility for outcomes.
- 11:43Don't only take credit when something succeeds.
- 11:47Ownership means examining your role when results aren't
- 11:51what you expected and deciding what needs to
- 11:56improve.
- 11:58Number 20, finish the last 10%.
- 12:02The final portion of a project can be
- 12:04the hardest because of the excitement being gone.
- 12:09Finish the details.
- 12:10The completion is what turns effort into something
- 12:12usable, something that's going to attract people, something
- 12:16that's going to give value to you and
- 12:17to others.
- 12:18When something gives value, you know what happens?
- 12:20People say, this is what I want to
- 12:22be part of, okay?
- 12:27I want to be part of this.
- 12:28I want to be part of this.
- 12:32I've used this analogy many times.
- 12:35You can get people to come to an
- 12:37event one time or get people to come
- 12:38to your party once, but the kicker is
- 12:41getting people to want to return because they
- 12:45want to.
- 12:46Number 21, become someone people trust with action.
- 12:53Trust grows when people see consistent follow-through.
- 13:00Let your history demonstrate that when something matters,
- 13:04you don't disappear when work begins.
- 13:07Number 22, make progress visible.
- 13:11Don't confuse communication with bragging.
- 13:14When others depend on your work, communicate, progress,
- 13:19so everyone understands what's complete and what still
- 13:23needs attention.
- 13:25Number 23, convert knowledge into results.
- 13:29A lot of people have all this knowledge
- 13:31from many different places, but if you don't
- 13:33convert it, you never get a value.
- 13:37You never get a value, okay?
- 13:41Knowing something has value, but applying it creates
- 13:46an impact.
- 13:47So you can have all the knowledge you
- 13:48want, but if you don't apply it to
- 13:50something, it's like you don't even have the
- 13:52knowledge.
- 13:53Take what you've learned and use it to
- 13:56solve a problem, improve a process, or create
- 14:01something meaningful.
- 14:03Number 24, turn plans into completed work.
- 14:10Planning is important, but planning cannot become a
- 14:13permanent substitute for execution.
- 14:17Eventually, the meeting ends, the document closes, and
- 14:22somebody has to do the work.
- 14:26Number 25, become a catalyst.
- 14:29A catalyst creates movement.
- 14:33Be the person whose presence helps good ideas
- 14:36gain traction and helps people move from talking
- 14:39toward doing.
- 14:41Now, you may have this great idea, but
- 14:44for whatever reason, you're like, oh, it's not
- 14:46going to go anywhere.
- 14:48Have some belief in you.
- 14:50I have worked with lots of groups and
- 14:52organizations, and sometimes the idea is not mature
- 14:55enough yet.
- 14:56It needs some work, some retooling.
- 14:59That doesn't mean it's bad.
- 15:01It just means that it needs work.
- 15:04And when it gets the proper work, guess
- 15:07what happens?
- 15:08It takes off.
- 15:10So you've heard divine timing.
- 15:13When we know what things are, they just
- 15:16work.
- 15:18They just work, and they work really, really
- 15:21well.
- 15:23I mean really well, so well that they
- 15:26make a difference for you.
- 15:29That's important to understand.
- 15:31They make a really big difference for you.
- 15:36But if you're constantly on the fence saying,
- 15:39I take one step forward, then you take
- 15:43two steps back.
- 15:46One step forward and two steps back.
- 15:49So now you're behind four steps.
- 15:52Right?
- 15:54So one step forward, two steps back.
- 15:57Right?
- 15:58So you're taking two steps back.
- 16:01Take another step forward, two steps back.
- 16:06So now you're three steps behind.
- 16:08So you just keep getting behind.
- 16:11I think a lot of people in our
- 16:14world are waiting for the sign.
- 16:20They're waiting for somebody to give them, basically,
- 16:24do I have a pen here?
- 16:25They're waiting for somebody to give them a
- 16:28written invitation.
- 16:30A written invitation to take action.
- 16:34You see, the world's not about written invitations.
- 16:39Those who choose to seize the moment will
- 16:43have the moment and more.
- 16:47I also want to tell you that if
- 16:48you're a leader, don't overpower things with too
- 16:54much speech.
- 16:56I lead a not-for-profit.
- 16:58And I took about two minutes to welcome
- 17:02everybody and tell them our agenda.
- 17:04And the most important thing I said was,
- 17:06after that, today is not about me.
- 17:09Today is about all of you.
- 17:13Put the ball back on the people's court.
- 17:16Don't be afraid to praise others.
- 17:19I think that's something a lot of people
- 17:20today, they just don't do.
- 17:26OK?
- 17:27And that's hard for a lot of people
- 17:30to understand.
- 17:33And the reason they don't understand it is
- 17:38they've failed in the past.
- 17:44And the reason they failed is their belief.
- 17:51Interesting, right?
- 18:00Pretty crazy.
- 18:12It's important to know this.
- 18:20I think sometimes most people won't realize the
- 18:28difference they can make until they start to
- 18:32see the small signs of the results.
- 18:38Today, I was working on something for quite
- 18:41a while.
- 18:42And I got to see a little bit
- 18:45of the results from an event I put
- 18:49on today.
- 18:50But not just the event, from the demeanor
- 18:53of the people and from them saying to
- 18:56me, John, this is the best event I've
- 18:59ever attended.
- 19:02I took that personally.
- 19:04I felt so good when I heard that.
- 19:09I think when you find your people, they
- 19:14find you, you connect.
- 19:18But that process is not a simple process,
- 19:21guys.
- 19:22It's not a simple process.
- 19:25You have to get out of your shell,
- 19:28and you have to do something in life.
- 19:30I know that sounds hard.
- 19:32And I told you it's not going to
- 19:34be comfortable, didn't I?
- 19:35I meant it.
- 19:36It is not going to be comfortable.
- 19:47That's something that a lot of people here
- 19:49don't realize.
- 19:53And the reason they don't realize it, I'll
- 19:56tell you why.
- 19:57It's because they're still stuck.
- 20:01They're still stuck in the what if mode.
- 20:06What if this doesn't work, right?
- 20:10What if it does?
- 20:12Do you know, I learned this a long
- 20:13time ago.
- 20:15I used to think the reason why sometimes
- 20:17I wasn't becoming successful when I was younger
- 20:19is I was fearing failure.
- 20:22But you know what I really learned after
- 20:24doing this many years?
- 20:26I thought I was fearing failure.
- 20:29But you know what I was fearing?
- 20:31I was fearing success.
- 20:34And so when you can embody the success
- 20:37already there, when you achieve it, it feels
- 20:43natural.
- 20:44So maybe there's certain things you might do
- 20:46when you get more successful, right?
- 20:49Maybe.
- 20:51But if you make those things part of
- 20:53your daily life, even if they're not in
- 20:55your daily life, but you think about them.
- 20:58You think about them as just a part
- 21:00of your day.
- 21:01They're not special.
- 21:03Number 26, just your daily new life.
- 21:08Leave situations better than you found them, right?
- 21:12Whatever you contribute, look for an improvement you
- 21:16can make.
- 21:17It doesn't have to be dramatic.
- 21:20Small improvements compound when they become part of
- 21:23how you operate.
- 21:26Number 27, build a reputation for getting things
- 21:30done.
- 21:31Your reputation is created through repeated behavior, consistency,
- 21:37reliability, communication, and completion.
- 21:42Eventually, teach people what they can expect from
- 21:46you.
- 21:48Teach them.
- 21:50Approach the world as education.
- 21:55I've had some people that I tried to
- 21:56coach with sales where they try to just
- 21:59throw cards at people because that's what they
- 22:01think they need to do.
- 22:03And I said to them, you know, bud,
- 22:05I got something you should try.
- 22:08And they said, yeah.
- 22:11Instead of trying to push your products or
- 22:13services or your cards, why not try to
- 22:17educate them on some benefits in life with
- 22:21your products and services?
- 22:22Don't sell it.
- 22:24Just educate people in general, OK, on your
- 22:29types of service, your types of products, but
- 22:32not you directly.
- 22:34Talk about the industry in general.
- 22:37Number 28, stop describing what should happen.
- 22:40There comes a point when another conversation doesn't
- 22:44add value.
- 22:45If you know what needs to happen and
- 22:47you're able to act, move from description into
- 22:51execution.
- 22:53Number 29, be the reason something happened.
- 22:57You remember, be the reason for the season.
- 22:58Be the reason something happened.
- 23:00Be the reason somebody took a step in
- 23:03their life because of you.
- 23:08You might say, well, gee, I'm not cut
- 23:09out for that.
- 23:10Even if you made one impact on somebody's
- 23:13life, you made a difference.
- 23:17You don't have to impact millions of people.
- 23:20Impact just one person.
- 23:22Maybe you'll impact another one.
- 23:24That's priceless, guys.
- 23:25Imagine looking back at something worthwhile and knowing
- 23:31it exists solely because you decided to act.
- 23:38You made the introduction, solved the problem, started
- 23:42the project, or created the momentum.
- 23:45That's key, guys.
- 23:47Number 30, make things happen, OK?
- 23:50This is where everything comes together.
- 23:54Don't spend your life waiting for perfect circumstances.
- 23:57They're never going to happen, or perfect permissions,
- 24:00or instructions, or somebody else to take responsibility.
- 24:03Not happening.
- 24:05Another way of secretly disguising, well, your fear
- 24:13and your procrastination.
- 24:17Take thoughtful actions and create movement.
- 24:21Doesn't have to be a lot of movement,
- 24:24but make movement in your life.
- 24:26When you create movement, like in the water,
- 24:29you create a ripple to catch people's attention.
- 24:32And you're not doing it to catch people's
- 24:34attention, but when you have that positive energy,
- 24:37people want to be around you.
- 24:41That's positive, guys.
- 24:43In closing today, making things happen doesn't mean
- 24:49doing everything yourself.
- 24:52It doesn't mean controlling everyone around you.
- 24:56Most people think it does.
- 24:58It doesn't, and it gets you into trouble.
- 25:00And it doesn't mean rushing into situations without
- 25:03thinking.
- 25:05You wonder what it really means?
- 25:07Yeah, it means becoming someone who recognizes when
- 25:10action is needed and is willing to take
- 25:13responsibility for creating progress, to step up, to
- 25:17listen to those inspired thoughts and turn them
- 25:19into action.
- 25:21See what needs doing today.
- 25:25Take initiative, connect people, bring solutions, follow through,
- 25:34finish the last 10%.
- 25:37And when an obstacle appears, don't, don't, don't
- 25:43automatically ask why something can't happen.
- 25:47Ask what needs to happen next.
- 25:51Over time, people will notice your new attitude,
- 25:55your new behavior.
- 25:56They'll know that when you say we're going
- 25:59to do something, you follow through with it.
- 26:05They'll know that when a problem appears, you
- 26:07look for answers.
- 26:08I'll give you an example.
- 26:08So today was a very big day for
- 26:10us in Franklin Lakes.
- 26:11We had the relaunch of our brand new
- 26:13Grow & Connect networking breakfast and the launch
- 26:19of My Baby, a site we created all
- 26:22from scratch, a really powerful automated chamber management
- 26:28member system and directory management.
- 26:33They're going to know that when a good
- 26:37idea needs momentum, you're willing to help kick
- 26:41it along or to create it.
- 26:43But even more importantly than all this, you'll
- 26:47know that about yourself.
- 26:54Ladies and gentlemen, I'm John C.
- 26:55Morley and thank you so much for choosing
- 26:57to join me for another amazing episode of
- 26:59Inspirations For Your Life.
- 27:01Stop waiting to be chosen, ladies and gentlemen.
- 27:04Stop describing what somebody else should do.
- 27:09Take the idea, take the bull by the
- 27:11horns.
- 27:12Take the responsibility now.
- 27:14Take that first step.
- 27:16Don't just be there when something happens.
- 27:19Be the reason for the season.
- 27:21Be the reason something's happened and become the
- 27:24catalyst, the person who makes things happen, that
- 27:28creates change.
- 27:31I know that sounds scary, but it's also
- 27:35very rewarding when you're the person to help
- 27:39bring an idea to pass, when you're the
- 27:42person that got somebody to get out of
- 27:46their shell, or when you're the person that
- 27:48helps somebody achieve their goals or their aspirations.
- 27:51I hope you guys have a great rest
- 27:53of your day and evening.
- 27:54Be sure to check out BelieveMeAchieved.com for
- 27:56more of my amazing, inspiring creations.
- 27:58Be well, everyone.
