Latest / Foul Territory / Anthony Volpe’s loud return, Sonny Gray retiring? Remembering 9/11
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hey, it's FT. It's Friday. Kratz and Todd Father in
- 0:06Speaker 1: the same spot. Braun here. And we're thinking about New
- 0:10Speaker 1: York City. We're thinking about the United States of America.
- 0:13Speaker 1: It's been 25 years since the attacks on 9-11. And
- 0:18Speaker 1: Major League Baseball will be thinking about that all day
- 0:21Speaker 1: and all night during games. There are a number of
- 0:23Speaker 1: pregame ceremonies. And really, across the country, it will be
- 0:28Speaker 1: acknowledged in games. You'll see it. on caps for players too.
- 0:32Speaker 1: So Todd father, we're going to talk to Bobby Valentine later.
- 0:36Speaker 1: He experienced that as a manager at the time of
- 0:38Speaker 1: the New York Mets, but you grew up in Jersey.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So did I, obviously we'll get Kratz's thoughts being connected
- 0:46Speaker 1: to New York city too. And it's not just about
- 0:48Speaker 1: New York. It's about the country being attacked and how
- 0:51Speaker 1: we responded, how baseball responded to just help with a
- 0:55Speaker 1: little bit of healing at the time too.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, everybody knows where they were during this time.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I think ultimately, you think back to this whole scenario,
- 1:04Speaker 2: we had really no clue what was going on at first.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I was in class, in history class, and my buddy
- 1:11Speaker 2: Andy Altman came up to me and said, you know,
- 1:13Speaker 2: the Twin Dowers just went down. And I said, what
- 1:14Speaker 2: are you talking about? Go to class. Leave me alone,
- 1:16Speaker 2: you know? And he was right. He was right, you know?
- 1:20Speaker 2: A crazy attack on September 11th. There was a lot
- 1:26Speaker 2: of tears in school. I mean, everybody was evacuating. We
- 1:30Speaker 2: didn't know what to expect. I remember a girl coming
- 1:34Speaker 2: up to me and saying, my uncle missed the bus
- 1:37Speaker 2: for the first time in 20 years. And he worked
- 1:39Speaker 2: in the Twin Towers. And she's crying on my shoulder.
- 1:41Speaker 2: And I'm like, holy cow. It was surreal. It was surreal.
- 1:45Speaker 3: It didn't feel real.
- 1:46Speaker 2: There's countless other stories I can go on and on.
- 1:50Speaker 2: But America was hit. And you know, how are we
- 1:55Speaker 2: going to, how are we going to get back? You know,
- 1:56Speaker 2: and I think that was the biggest thing. And I
- 1:58Speaker 2: think ultimately I know we're going to have Bobby Valentine on.
- 2:02Speaker 2: He was a part of the, one of the first
- 2:03Speaker 2: games that happened. Sports kind of brought us together a
- 2:06Speaker 2: little bit. And just, I think about the firefighters. I
- 2:10Speaker 2: think about the people that work there. I think about
- 2:12Speaker 2: everybody that was impacted during this whole time. And Kratzy's
- 2:17Speaker 2: from Pennsylvania. He understood too. Like, and so are you. Scotty,
- 2:22Speaker 2: we're right down the street here, man. I'm, I'm 50
- 2:24Speaker 2: miles away from New York City. I felt like we
- 2:27Speaker 2: could see the dust from the Twin Towers, you know,
- 2:30Speaker 2: moving its way across.
- 2:31Speaker 3: The East Coast.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And, yeah, it was just a terrible time. And I
- 2:38Speaker 2: talk to my buddies all the time that are firefighters
- 2:41Speaker 2: and policemen. I say, hey, man, just giving you a
- 2:43Speaker 2: courtesy hello just to say I love you or something
- 2:45Speaker 2: like that because you never.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Know, you know, what can really happen in this world.
- 2:49Speaker 2: And it was a really tough time for a lot
- 2:51Speaker 2: of people.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, 25 years has changed a lot. I
- 2:57Speaker 4: remember that moment. Obviously, I was in class in college,
- 3:02Speaker 4: and baseball doesn't demean what 9-11 is. You saw the doc.
- 3:11Speaker 4: We talked to Todd Zeal yesterday. It's not the most
- 3:17Speaker 4: important thing, but baseball– is fortunate because we play it
- 3:20Speaker 4: every single day. And after that, I just remember thinking,
- 3:23Speaker 4: I remember thinking like, how do we get back to
- 3:27Speaker 4: normal with what just happened? And baseball is a daily thing.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Like it's a daily event. And if we can, you know,
- 3:34Speaker 4: baseball helped America heal in that, then I, you know, I,
- 3:39Speaker 4: I feel, I feel honored to be part of the
- 3:42Speaker 4: baseball community, which was so affected by this, not just
- 3:46Speaker 4: with games being canceled. No, it was with like, hey,
- 3:49Speaker 4: this story of a minor league season ending right at
- 3:52Speaker 4: the beginning of September and guys getting on their flights
- 3:56Speaker 4: from California to go from the East Coast over and
- 4:00Speaker 4: different guys, hey, the team won or the team won
- 4:03Speaker 4: the night before and they were celebrating and they didn't
- 4:06Speaker 4: get on the flight. I've had so many people through
- 4:09Speaker 4: the baseball community have a connection to 9-11, being on
- 4:12Speaker 4: the East Coast, needing to go back to the West Coast,
- 4:15Speaker 4: all that stuff.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Like, it is.
- 4:17Speaker 4: It's a somber day, but it's also a day where
- 4:20Speaker 4: we need to celebrate the crap out of it because
- 4:22Speaker 4: I think we banded together as a country. And I
- 4:26Speaker 4: think baseball had a small part in that. And I'm
- 4:30Speaker 4: proud to say I'm part of it.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Well said.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And much more on this. We'll do much more later on.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Bobby Valentine joining us on FT. But for now, let's
- 4:40Speaker 1: get to some topics. All smiles presented by Lorraine Coe.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I mean, you can't ask for a better return to
- 4:54Speaker 1: the big leagues. Todd father, Anthony Volpe sent down to
- 4:57Speaker 1: the minors. We're going to get some sound from him
- 5:00Speaker 1: during this segment, but he was like, I didn't know
- 5:02Speaker 1: what I was going to come back up. And he
- 5:04Speaker 1: comes up back up pretty quickly since jazz Chisholm hits
- 5:07Speaker 1: the shelf. He ends up with three knocks, a grand
- 5:12Speaker 1: slam for Volpe.
- 5:14Speaker 3: So.
- 5:14Speaker 1: The Yanks ran all over the Rockies. But what do
- 5:17Speaker 1: you think about this for him on a return? And
- 5:20Speaker 1: can he be an impact on the Yankees even when
- 5:23Speaker 1: Jazz returns? Can he be a utility guy and play
- 5:26Speaker 1: all over the field for them?
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, first and foremost, they needed this sweep.
- 5:31Speaker 2: That was that was a big thing with them just
- 5:33Speaker 2: coming into this sweeping Colorado.
- 5:35Speaker 3: At least they can gain. They gained a game in
- 5:37Speaker 3: this race team.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I didn't think they were going to win two out
- 5:40Speaker 2: of three against the Braves, and they ultimately did.
- 5:43Speaker 3: So what? Okay, fine. Yankees gain the game. You'll take that.
- 5:46Speaker 2: They'll have a four-game series with them on the 22nd. Yeah,
- 5:50Speaker 2: Volpe came in. Guns a-blazin', man. Listen, you saw the
- 5:55Speaker 2: guy go down smiling after he lost two AVS challenges, and, you.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Know, he didn't know what to expect. I mean, it's
- 6:02Speaker 3: a whirlwind.
- 6:03Speaker 2: You're up in the big leagues for the last couple years,
- 6:05Speaker 2: and ultimately you're not doing what you do best and
- 6:09Speaker 2: helping your team win. And the offense wasn't there defense
- 6:13Speaker 2: at times. And now you've got another chance. How many
- 6:16Speaker 2: people can say they get another chance at their job
- 6:19Speaker 2: to come up here and make an impact for at
- 6:22Speaker 2: least 15 days. And I think for him, he's got
- 6:26Speaker 2: to take a run with it. It was nice to
- 6:27Speaker 2: see him get those three knocks. I loved every second
- 6:29Speaker 2: of that. The grand slam was opposite field. That was
- 6:33Speaker 2: perfect for him. Go there, drive the ball the other way. Um, Yeah,
- 6:39Speaker 2: I love every second of it. Can he have an impact?
- 6:41Speaker 3: Sure, with his speed.
- 6:44Speaker 2: You know, a guy that you can put in at
- 6:47Speaker 2: the end of games if you feel like you need
- 6:48Speaker 2: him for defensive purposes. And people are like, oh, well,
- 6:50Speaker 2: his defense isn't good. He's actually a pretty good defender.
- 6:54Speaker 2: He struggles at times, but at the same, for me,
- 6:57Speaker 2: Gold Glover, I mean, you can't really take that away
- 6:59Speaker 2: from somebody. So, yes, I think he's seeing this opportunity.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I think he's taking it seriously. No telling what can
- 7:07Speaker 2: happen as they move forward, Kratzy, into the playoffs.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Dehydration is real, people. So are quince electrolyte stick packs.
- 7:18Speaker 1: All of a sudden, you don't need some big bottle
- 7:20Speaker 1: to carry around. Just these little packets if you suddenly
- 7:23Speaker 1: feel like you need a little hydration. Raspberry salt, delicious.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Citrus salt, my personal favorite. And watermelon salt for those
- 7:30Speaker 1: watermelon lovers out there.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Very solid.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Just in your water bottle.
- 7:35Speaker 5: I'm a watermelon guy. It's quick, easy in the morning,
- 7:37Speaker 5: wake up, feeling a little down, throw some in there,
- 7:40Speaker 5: feeling great, throw some in there because it'll keep that
- 7:42Speaker 5: high going.
- 7:43Speaker 4: So stay on it.
- 7:44Speaker 5: It hydrates you because of that fermented rice, great tasting,
- 7:49Speaker 5: and it makes you feel better.
- 7:50Speaker 1: They're made in the USA, rigorously third-party tested. Give your
- 7:53Speaker 1: body what it really needs to stay hydrated. Quince.com slash
- 7:56Speaker 1: foul gets you free shipping on your order and 365-day returns.
- 8:00Speaker 1: That's quince.com slash foul for free shipping and 365-day returns.

- 8:06Speaker 1: Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure,
- 8:09Speaker 1: or prevent any disease.
- 8:11Speaker 3: No, for sure.
- 8:12Speaker 4: I mean, I think he, his words, not mine, but
- 8:16Speaker 4: I've been through so many different minor league demotions sent
- 8:20Speaker 4: down from the big leagues after what? A year in
- 8:23Speaker 4: the big leagues, three years in the big leagues and
- 8:25Speaker 4: watching how guys handle it. I remember a, I remember
- 8:29Speaker 4: a reliever. I won't even say his name because he
- 8:31Speaker 4: was kind of a, Kind of a douche, but he
- 8:35Speaker 4: was like, he comes down and he goes, haven't put
- 8:39Speaker 4: my clothes on a clip in five years. And I'm like, what?
- 8:44Speaker 4: I was like, who cares? Like, who cares? We're here now.
- 8:47Speaker 4: He's like, I didn't mean anything by it. I'm like,
- 8:50Speaker 4: all it means is that you don't want to be here.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Nobody wants to be in the bushes if you've been
- 8:54Speaker 4: in the big leagues. Nobody wants to ride on a
- 8:56Speaker 4: bus instead of PJs. Nobody wants to make a tenth
- 9:00Speaker 4: of what you make in the big leagues. In the
- 9:03Speaker 4: minor leagues. So Volpe said it. He's like, I don't
- 9:05Speaker 4: know if I'll ever be there. Does that catapult him?
- 9:09Speaker 4: Does that make him fully commit to the fact that
- 9:12Speaker 4: maybe he needs to make adjustments with his swings? Maybe
- 9:15Speaker 4: he needs to be able to make some type of
- 9:18Speaker 4: adjustment that he was probably trying to make in the
- 9:20Speaker 4: big leagues, but it's tough to make adjustments in the
- 9:23Speaker 4: big leagues. Can he become a serviceable player? I don't
- 9:26Speaker 4: think he'll ever be like a year-long, year-after-year above average hitter,
- 9:30Speaker 4: but if he can just be an average hitter, He's
- 9:34Speaker 4: a positive war player every single year, so his value
- 9:37Speaker 4: to a team is always going to be there. It's
- 9:39Speaker 4: just a matter of how far can he take his career.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Can he never go back to the minor leagues? No
- 9:46Speaker 4: matter what he does while Jazz is gone, I don't
- 9:48Speaker 4: think they're ever going to be like, sorry, Jazz, there's
- 9:50Speaker 4: a right-hander on the mound. We're starting Volpe. You know what?
- 9:55Speaker 4: He could commit to some left-handed at-bats for this team
- 9:57Speaker 4: down the stretch. We'll see.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Let's get word from him. He had the line we
- 10:04Speaker 1: were referring to post-game that resonated with people.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Here it is.
- 10:10Speaker 5: No, I.
- 10:12Speaker 6: Mean, I just felt like I had an opportunity, and
- 10:15Speaker 6: obviously it's weird the way it happened you never want
- 10:19Speaker 6: someone to get hurt or anything but um i had
- 10:24Speaker 6: nothing guaranteed obviously i thought i was never going to
- 10:27Speaker 6: be back up here um so just trying to make
- 10:30Speaker 6: the most of it he.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Had a nice curtain call after the grand slam but
- 10:34Speaker 1: let's rewind on this one todd father how much does
- 10:39Speaker 1: it help a player when he returns and he's had
- 10:42Speaker 1: plenty of downs during his career and it hasn't looked
- 10:46Speaker 1: exactly the way that most thought it would. First AB,
- 10:50Speaker 1: nice ovation from the crowd. And hey, we grew up
- 10:54Speaker 1: around here, and same thing in Philly. You don't always
- 10:59Speaker 1: get that. I think you get a little bit more
- 11:00Speaker 1: of that now with the modern crowd trying to show support,
- 11:03Speaker 1: but I wouldn't say what he put together recently had
- 11:07Speaker 1: necessarily put him in a place where you expected the
- 11:10Speaker 1: crowd to be like, yeah, let's give this guy a
- 11:11Speaker 1: nice ovation. So I was impressed, and Tell me the
- 11:15Speaker 1: psychology of it for someone like him. When he's gone
- 11:18Speaker 1: through it, now he's in the minors. He was raking
- 11:20Speaker 1: in the minors, comes back up, and feels good heading
- 11:24Speaker 1: back and hearing the crowd appreciates him.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, there's not much more this cat
- 11:28Speaker 2: can do. I mean, you go down to minor leagues,
- 11:30Speaker 2: it feels like, for the most part, you're going to
- 11:33Speaker 2: do well. You're facing pitching that's not as elite. You know,
- 11:37Speaker 2: to be honest with you, AAA to big leagues is
- 11:39Speaker 2: a big jump. Kratzy and I have been there before.
- 11:42Speaker 2: You're going to face some guys that, you should mash
- 11:45Speaker 2: at the end of the day. And then there's some
- 11:47Speaker 2: guys that you're like, all right, I got to battle
- 11:48Speaker 2: a little bit, but usually have the upper hand. I
- 11:50Speaker 2: think it put him at ease a little bit, understandably,
- 11:53Speaker 2: knowing where he came from, how he started, how big
- 11:57Speaker 2: he was, and then how low he got in the
- 12:00Speaker 2: sense of baseball terms.
- 12:02Speaker 3: I think it made him calm. I think it made
- 12:04Speaker 3: him cool, collective, all that kind of jazz.
- 12:08Speaker 2: But he's still a pretty good baseball player from what
- 12:11Speaker 2: people don't really understand. Yeah, you're in a market where
- 12:15Speaker 2: it's that what-have-you-done-for-me-lately attitude. We are all around it. I
- 12:19Speaker 2: don't care what you do. You can be a plumber.
- 12:22Speaker 2: You can work at McDonald's. In this area, if you're not,
- 12:24Speaker 2: you know, humping ass for better words, there's going to
- 12:28Speaker 2: be a problem. And if you're not, you know, pulling
- 12:30Speaker 2: your weight, it's going to be a big problem. So, again,
- 12:34Speaker 2: I think going down there, put a little humble pie.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Then you bring them back up, and I think maybe
- 12:40Speaker 2: a little more determined to, hey, this is Somebody needs
- 12:44Speaker 2: to let me know, or let myself know, I need
- 12:46Speaker 2: to get going here. I might not be playing too
- 12:48Speaker 2: much longer in this major league.
- 12:52Speaker 4: One thing that everybody always says in the big leagues
- 12:54Speaker 4: or in the minor leagues, if you don't like it,
- 12:56Speaker 4: play better. If Volpe needs to play better to play
- 12:59Speaker 4: for the Yankees, that could be different than needing to
- 13:01Speaker 4: play for another team. That would probably take an above-average
- 13:05Speaker 4: production-wise overall at shortstop. The other thing that Volpe has
- 13:09Speaker 4: going for him, that probably irritates Yankee fans more than
- 13:13Speaker 4: anything is the front office and Aaron Boone. Love him.
- 13:18Speaker 4: There's a lot of guys that get sent down from
- 13:20Speaker 4: the minor, get sent down from the big leagues and
- 13:23Speaker 4: there's nobody in their corner. There's nobody that's like, man,
- 13:27Speaker 4: you know, I can't wait to get this guy back up.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Once he comes back up, we want to give him
- 13:31Speaker 4: an opportunity. So that's something that he has in his favor,
- 13:35Speaker 4: in his camp. But the reality is, If George Lombard
- 13:40Speaker 4: plays better than you, you have nothing you can do
- 13:43Speaker 4: about it. There's another George Lombard. There's another Jose somebody
- 13:47Speaker 4: in the minor leagues behind these guys. You have to
- 13:50Speaker 4: continue to improve. And just because Volpe doesn't do it
- 13:54Speaker 4: for the Yankees doesn't mean he can't do it for
- 13:55Speaker 4: somebody else.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Yeah, this could be a big couple weeks for him
- 14:01Speaker 1: while Jazz Chisholm is sitting and you're getting some more
- 14:03Speaker 1: regular playing time, regardless of what happens after that. and
- 14:06Speaker 1: the way the Yankees look. And, yes, the Yankees are
- 14:08Speaker 1: still three games back of the raise. They do have
- 14:10Speaker 1: that four-gamer that's coming up in about 10 days. The
- 14:13Speaker 1: season series also is important. It's 6-3 in favor of
- 14:16Speaker 1: the raise. So, really, if they win one more game
- 14:18Speaker 1: in that series, they take the season series. That gives
- 14:19Speaker 1: them an extra game.
- 14:21Speaker 4: One more thing. You said about Jazz. Guess who's a
- 14:23Speaker 4: free agent after this year?
- 14:25Speaker 3: Jazz. Jazz Kism.
- 14:27Speaker 4: I mean, what does George and Volpe look like at
- 14:32Speaker 4: second and shortstop? What does that look like? I don't know.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Just not that you have to be like, oh, he's
- 14:38Speaker 4: a free agent. Oh, they're definitely not resigning him because
- 14:40Speaker 4: they got Volpe. Like, no, that's not how. But this
- 14:44Speaker 4: is a tryout for your next step in the big leagues,
- 14:47Speaker 4: whatever that is.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. Good call.
- 14:51Speaker 1: But for one night, all smiles. Lorraine Co. Mint, cinnamon, mango.

- 15:22Speaker 1: you use that code. Time to look at the weekend.
- 15:26Speaker 3: What do we have?
- 15:27Speaker 1: SeatGeek helping us out. Where are we getting seats? Where
- 15:30Speaker 1: are the matchups? I think, Kratz, the way we order
- 15:32Speaker 1: this is we have to start with the matchups that
- 15:34Speaker 1: include two teams fighting for their lives, and we have
- 15:38Speaker 1: at least one of those that is staring at me,
- 15:41Speaker 1: maybe more.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Toronto and Baltimore. That's one. To me, I think that
- 15:46Speaker 4: could be exactly what we just discussed. Obviously, I don't
- 15:50Speaker 4: think the Orioles are in it. I think the Jays
- 15:52Speaker 4: are still within striking distance, and the Orioles are a
- 15:55Speaker 4: very beatable team. I think starting out the series... You know,
- 15:59Speaker 4: you have a Saturday day game. This is where I
- 16:01Speaker 4: don't think the Blue Jays are very good, but they
- 16:03Speaker 4: could do something. Kevin Pillar said it yesterday. TBD has
- 16:07Speaker 4: been their best pitcher, the opener or whatever, whoever they're
- 16:11Speaker 4: going to decide to throw, and that's who's throwing Saturday. Like,
- 16:14Speaker 4: if they go in and take two of three and
- 16:17Speaker 4: the White Sox continue to skid and the Guardians continue
- 16:20Speaker 4: to surge, this series could really swing not just the
- 16:25Speaker 4: wild card, but the American League as we're watching it
- 16:28Speaker 4: right now.
- 16:30Speaker 2: It's a good call Theodore Beauregard Davis Bob Lorenz taught
- 16:35Speaker 2: me that that's who TBD is I'm going I'm going
- 16:39Speaker 2: Astros Rays my guys like this is a battle here
- 16:43Speaker 2: if the Rays end up losing some games and the
- 16:45Speaker 2: Yankees can come through watch out Astros are right there
- 16:48Speaker 2: doing their due diligence Rays had a tough little go
- 16:51Speaker 2: here with the teams they've been playing and they've been
- 16:53Speaker 2: doing just fine but Is there a weak link in
- 16:57Speaker 2: this Rays team? Is it the last 15, 16 games?
- 16:59Speaker 2: Are they going to go like a 6-9 or 6-10?
- 17:04Speaker 2: Are they going to keep doing what they do? So
- 17:06Speaker 2: we'll see.
- 17:08Speaker 3: I'm fired up about that. Jordan or Junior.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Needs to pick it up.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Yeah, you pick it up.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Jordan needs to pick it up. I don't want to
- 17:16Speaker 4: get to this part of the season. Like if I'm
- 17:19Speaker 4: going on SeatGeek, I'm finding every single Astros game because–
- 17:23Speaker 4: He will be– he's going to pick it up soon.
- 17:26Speaker 4: He's been– he just doesn't look the same. He's going
- 17:30Speaker 4: to make a run for the Triple Crown. If you
- 17:33Speaker 4: have a chance to get a ticket to watch the
- 17:35Speaker 4: guy that's getting the Triple Crown, yeah, you got to
- 17:40Speaker 4: get after it. You got to watch those games.
- 17:42Speaker 3: That's easy money there.
- 17:45Speaker 1: So those are just a couple series. Find the one
- 17:48Speaker 1: that you want to go to. Weather's been beautiful in
- 17:51Speaker 1: many parts of the country right now. It's that time
- 17:53Speaker 1: of year, right? Post-Labor Day, and you just get a
- 17:55Speaker 1: little bit of crisp at night, but not too much crisp. Well,
- 17:58Speaker 1: depends where you are. But for those of you in
- 18:01Speaker 1: the right places, you know what I'm talking about.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I was talking about Coco. Territory 10, 10% off MLB
- 18:07Speaker 1: tickets on SeatGeek. They rate it 1 to 10 when
- 18:09Speaker 1: you're looking up there to see how good of a
- 18:11Speaker 1: deal you're getting. Territory 1-0. Click the link in the description.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Download the app. Have the code automatically added to your account.
- 18:17Speaker 1: You can use it now, tonight. You can use it later.
- 18:20Speaker 1: These ones hit you hard when you see it, at
- 18:22Speaker 1: least for me. We'll get your guys' take on this.
- 18:24Speaker 1: So Sonny Gray has not decided if he's going to
- 18:27Speaker 1: pitch next season. And if his family wants him to
- 18:30Speaker 1: call it, he told Alex Spear, he'll be done in
- 18:33Speaker 1: a heartbeat. Quote, we'll see what the future holds for me.
- 18:35Speaker 1: But if this is it, no better way to go
- 18:37Speaker 1: out and try to do something special here the next
- 18:39Speaker 1: couple months. So let's bring it to our former players.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Todd Fotherer. When we look at a player who's towards
- 18:45Speaker 1: the end of his career and the numbers are ticking down,
- 18:47Speaker 1: you're like, okay, this might be it. Is this going
- 18:49Speaker 1: to be his last season? Or maybe there's injuries popping up.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Sonny Gray is probably going to be, what, top five
- 18:55Speaker 1: AL Cy Young this year? You look at a player
- 18:58Speaker 1: like that and you're like, damn, is he potentially going
- 19:00Speaker 1: to leave us? It does happen. Brandon Belt was at
- 19:03Speaker 1: a banger last season before he went out.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Big poppy.
- 19:05Speaker 1: There's plenty of guys. Don't get crowd-started on the Brandon
- 19:08Speaker 1: Belt situation and how he got screwed in the offseason
- 19:10Speaker 1: with nobody wanting him for no reason.
- 19:12Speaker 3: But anyway.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Does this shock you when you see news like this?
- 19:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think it's shocking. I think it's a
- 19:19Speaker 2: new age of baseball, man. Family, dude, I can't say enough.
- 19:24Speaker 2: You don't want to miss your kid's stuff. Like for
- 19:26Speaker 2: me personally, I didn't want to retire, but when I did,
- 19:30Speaker 2: I was kind of okay with it because now I
- 19:32Speaker 2: could just be dad, you know, without leaving all the time.
- 19:37Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Is he done– After this year, is he a free
- 19:43Speaker 2: agent after this year?
- 19:44Speaker 3: Do we know that, Kratzy? He is. Maybe, I don't know.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I mean, listen, I i think.
- 19:49Speaker 2: When you talk about family hits people deep and i
- 19:51Speaker 2: i think that's the bottom line there's there's a team
- 19:54Speaker 2: option team option okay so there's a team right.
- 19:56Speaker 1: So he's not a free agent then i mean because
- 19:58Speaker 1: they're gonna pick that up i don't know what the
- 20:00Speaker 1: number is but he's got a 269 era they're gonna
- 20:02Speaker 1: pick up whatever that number is 26 starts come on Okay.
- 20:06Speaker 3: All right. So maybe it is a tactic. I don't know.
- 20:13Speaker 2: I think when you talk about family, it gets real serious.
- 20:15Speaker 2: I don't think– it's hard. It's hard to figure out.
- 20:19Speaker 2: But Sonny Gray has been elite. I remember him with
- 20:21Speaker 2: the A's. I mean, fantastic.
- 20:23Speaker 3: He had that two-seamer that I could never hit. I
- 20:27Speaker 3: remember him.
- 20:27Speaker 2: He was so slow and deliberate on every pitch, like
- 20:31Speaker 2: took his time, deep breath.
- 20:33Speaker 3: And then it just exploded. It came out like a cannon.
- 20:36Speaker 3: And went either way.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Whatever he wants to do, that's great. But, you know,
- 20:41Speaker 2: we're getting older now. Scotty, Kratzy, there's not that many
- 20:45Speaker 2: guys that I've played with that are still playing. So,
- 20:48Speaker 2: I want to hold on to all.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Of them, you know. So, hopefully he changes his mind.
- 20:53Speaker 4: I think there's probably a little bit to do with it,
- 20:55Speaker 4: but I also think it's 100% true. Very few, Todd,
- 20:58Speaker 4: maybe people didn't even hear what he said. He didn't
- 21:01Speaker 4: want to be done. Like, Baseball essentially said, well, you
- 21:05Speaker 4: know what, we're not going to guarantee anything for good
- 21:07Speaker 4: players who are past the age of 32. So it
- 21:11Speaker 4: kind of pushed him out of the game. It doesn't
- 21:13Speaker 4: mean Todd wasn't good anymore. And to me, for me,
- 21:18Speaker 4: my career was completely average. But I got to go
- 21:21Speaker 4: out on my own terms. I got to go out.
- 21:23Speaker 4: I quit when it was exactly what Sonny Gray was saying.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Your family says it's time to be home, then it's
- 21:30Speaker 4: time to be home. Maybe my suggestion to players would
- 21:34Speaker 4: be come home before that, because sometimes that can be
- 21:39Speaker 4: a little bit too late once they start speaking up
- 21:41Speaker 4: about being home. But you know what? I think Sonny's
- 21:45Speaker 4: team option for $ 30 million can easily be exercised as
- 21:50Speaker 4: a two-year $ 50 million deal. And that would take Sonny
- 21:54Speaker 4: to age 38. And I think there's probably some Some
- 21:58Speaker 4: ploy in that. There's plenty. Go back and look at
- 22:01Speaker 4: what other guys at 36, 37, I'm not sure what
- 22:04Speaker 4: Max and Verlander signed for, and compare Sonny's 36-year-old season
- 22:12Speaker 4: to what they got. Maybe he wants to play another
- 22:15Speaker 4: two years. Maybe he doesn't. I don't know. If the
- 22:17Speaker 4: family says be home, great. But I don't think playing
- 22:21Speaker 4: on a one-year deal necessarily is as advantageous as he
- 22:26Speaker 4: would like. So, Yeah, I think there's partially a ploy
- 22:30Speaker 4: to this too.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Remember Charlie Morton?
- 22:34Speaker 3: Chaz.
- 22:36Speaker 4: He tried to quit like three or four years in
- 22:39Speaker 4: a row.
- 22:40Speaker 3: I was going to say five.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Maybe I'm exaggerating. But then every year it's like, oops,
- 22:44Speaker 1: 15 mil, I'm back.
- 22:46Speaker 4: It's super easy. He's like, oh, I get to throw
- 22:49Speaker 4: it home? Oh, I'm never going to play anywhere else
- 22:51Speaker 4: but home. Actually, 18 million? Oh, Braves are going to
- 22:55Speaker 4: pay me 20 million? Absolutely. It's when you get to
- 22:59Speaker 4: this age, when you get to where 36 to 40
- 23:02Speaker 4: years old, playing in the game, you're going to get
- 23:04Speaker 4: one-year deals, two-year deals. Does your family want to allow
- 23:09Speaker 4: you to be the center of their attention? And when
- 23:12Speaker 4: that changes, it's different.
- 23:17Speaker 1: But everyone has a price.
- 23:20Speaker 4: That's what I mean.
- 23:22Speaker 3: That's what I mean.
- 23:22Speaker 4: There's a price. I just feel like Sonny's pitching so
- 23:26Speaker 4: well and knowing Sonny, He puts everything he has into it,
- 23:30Speaker 4: getting ready for the season, in the season, and it
- 23:33Speaker 4: can drain on your family when you do that. But
- 23:37Speaker 4: if he's going to make the most out of the
- 23:39Speaker 4: rest of his life, he has no shot of ever
- 23:42Speaker 4: making $ 30 million after he's done playing. So his team
- 23:45Speaker 4: option would take him to 37, but hey, you know what?
- 23:48Speaker 4: Red Sox, I'll give you a discount for next year.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Just put three years on that at 25 a year,
- 23:56Speaker 4: and we're good to go. Just saying.
- 24:00Speaker 3: That would help.
- 24:01Speaker 1: That would help convince him. And he might not need convincing.
- 24:04Speaker 1: I mean, he's had an awesome year. And his family
- 24:06Speaker 1: might be like, you need to continue this. You're too good.
- 24:08Speaker 1: It's not like you're a top 20 pitcher in the AL.
- 24:11Speaker 1: You're a top five pitcher results-wise in the American League.
- 24:16Speaker 3: It's hard.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Most guys don't walk away from that.
- 24:19Speaker 4: But if that's the case, then he's... Hey, babe, do
- 24:23Speaker 4: you think it's okay if I keep playing? She says... Yeah,
- 24:27Speaker 4: kids are cool. They enjoy watching you play. We enjoy
- 24:30Speaker 4: living in Boston.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Great.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Now Operation Make It Not a One-Year Deal.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Tweet and an interesting promo to bring up. So the
- 24:40Speaker 1: Giants are offering to pay their most loyal fans to
- 24:43Speaker 1: come to September games. That's the story in sfgate.com from
- 24:47Speaker 1: Alex Simon. Here's the context, guys. So if you're a
- 24:51Speaker 1: season ticket holder and you went to this week's three-game
- 24:55Speaker 1: series against the Cardinals... then you get credit back equal
- 24:59Speaker 1: to 15% of that ticket's value.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Okay.
- 25:03Speaker 1: The team then says, we'll give you an additional 5%
- 25:06Speaker 1: to boost the credit total. If the giants win, they
- 25:09Speaker 1: won all three games against the Cardinals this week. So
- 25:11Speaker 1: that's a total of a 20% credit for those games.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I believe when they say credit, it's going towards next
- 25:17Speaker 1: year's tickets. That would be the smart play there. I'm
- 25:20Speaker 1: pretty sure that's what the stipulation is, but thoughts it is.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Okay, cool.
- 25:25Speaker 1: So thoughts on this, because the, Attendance was dropping and
- 25:29Speaker 1: it's rare. I mean, the Giants really get it good
- 25:32Speaker 1: in terms of fan attendance for years when they're good,
- 25:35Speaker 1: when they're bad. But since the August 3rd trade deadline,
- 25:40Speaker 1: they have failed to draw 30,000 fans for nine of
- 25:43Speaker 1: their past 16 home games. They had not drawn fewer
- 25:47Speaker 1: than 32,000 for any of their first 56 home dates.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Do you like the promotion, E.K.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Yes.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Yes, but I don't know if Todd would agree with me,
- 26:02Speaker 4: but playing in the minor leagues, you sit there and
- 26:05Speaker 4: you go, whew, they got gimmicks galore. Every minor league team,
- 26:09Speaker 4: they got somebody, they got the beatbox boys, they got
- 26:12Speaker 4: the bucket men, they got the bat dog, they got superstars,
- 26:17Speaker 4: all that stuff going on. I always felt like the
- 26:21Speaker 4: teams with the least amount of gimmicks in the big leagues.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Got the most fans. So clearly the Giants were feeling
- 26:29Speaker 4: the pressure like, ah, you know, we got to make
- 26:31Speaker 4: sure we bring people back. And so to bring more
- 26:35Speaker 4: people back, yeah, that's cool. But the extra incentive, 20% off,
- 26:42Speaker 4: the thing I don't know is are you getting 20%
- 26:44Speaker 4: off renewing your season tickets or just the tickets that
- 26:47Speaker 4: you bought or the tickets that you buy for next year?
- 26:51Speaker 4: Is it just one game? I don't know. But you
- 26:53Speaker 4: know what? The name of the game is to put
- 26:56Speaker 4: butts in the seats, and if they weren't doing it,
- 26:59Speaker 4: I'm here for the gimmick, I guess.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Yeah, this is a different one. I don't know. I
- 27:10Speaker 3: don't know, man. Well, no.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Why not just make the tickets like 10 or 15
- 27:14Speaker 2: bucks a.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Pop and go from there so you get more people
- 27:17Speaker 3: in the seats?
- 27:18Speaker 4: Well, they want more for next year, too.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Yeah, but they sold them already, right? So you bought
- 27:23Speaker 1: season tickets. So the concept here would be, all right.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Oh, it's just for season ticket holders. Yes.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Yeah, it's for season ticket holders, right? For the devoted
- 27:31Speaker 1: fans that aren't showing up because, say, they aren't looking
- 27:35Speaker 1: at this year as important, which they're right. The team's
- 27:38Speaker 1: not good, right? So, for example, you go to those
- 27:40Speaker 1: three games. Let's say it's $ 100 a ticket, right? So
- 27:44Speaker 1: you get 20% back per ticket. So you get $ 60.
- 27:47Speaker 1: That credit gets used for next year's season tickets. we're
- 27:51Speaker 1: not talking about if you're a season ticket holder, it's,
- 27:54Speaker 1: it's not cheap usually for season tickets. So we're not
- 27:57Speaker 1: talking about significant dollars, although it could be significant dollars
- 28:01Speaker 1: if your season ticket is really expensive.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:03Speaker 1: But for example, yeah, if each ticket's a hundred bucks
- 28:07Speaker 1: and you buy a season ticket package, a full package, right.
- 28:10Speaker 1: That's 81 games. So that's $ 8, 100.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I'm trying to just do some basics. I know most
- 28:16Speaker 1: situations are different than you just got yourself 60, off
- 28:21Speaker 1: your $ 8, 100. So it's not making a heavy dent, but
- 28:25Speaker 1: it's not nothing. And it could happen again where it's
- 28:27Speaker 1: another 60 bucks off the next series if they do that.
- 28:30Speaker 1: So maybe you end up getting a hundred bucks back
- 28:32Speaker 1: or something. It's not crazy, but it's them just saying, Hey,
- 28:35Speaker 1: we want you here and we'll give you a little
- 28:38Speaker 1: back for it.
- 28:39Speaker 4: And here's, here's a prime example of what happens if
- 28:42Speaker 4: the league says, you know what? We don't need people
- 28:45Speaker 4: in the seats. People are going to go find other
- 28:47Speaker 4: things like they had They had, what did you say,
- 28:52Speaker 4: 56 games where it was 32,000 or more. Clearly, the
- 28:57Speaker 4: fans saw by the trade deadline, they were like, this
- 29:01Speaker 4: team sucks. I'll go find something else to do. If
- 29:04Speaker 4: Major League Baseball feels like they can lock out players
- 29:07Speaker 4: to get what they want, they're going to also be
- 29:11Speaker 4: locking out fans because the fans in San Francisco have
- 29:14Speaker 4: stopped coming out as proficiently as I've seen them forever,
- 29:18Speaker 4: as they did at the beginning of the season. And
- 29:22Speaker 4: if that's the case, people find other things to do.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Football is right now. Yes. You know, that's another thing. Well,
- 29:32Speaker 3: what else?
- 29:33Speaker 2: If the Giants season is over, forget about them. I'm
- 29:36Speaker 2: going straight to football. I don't know if you guys
- 29:39Speaker 2: agree with me on this. Like Savannah Bananas, they sell
- 29:41Speaker 2: out every time. I'm not trying to.
- 29:43Speaker 3: It is what it is. I'm just saying, you know, why?
- 29:47Speaker 4: It's so cool. Yeah, it's a it's a cool event.
- 29:49Speaker 4: But it's like, you know, you're going to like a.
- 29:51Speaker 4: You're going to an event. You're not going to a
- 29:54Speaker 4: baseball game. It's like, you know, I'll go.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Well, it's entertainment.
- 29:57Speaker 3: It's entertainment.
- 29:58Speaker 1: That's sports entertainment, right? Like that's like WWE is sports entertainment.
- 30:03Speaker 1: You're not going there. I mean, you might be into
- 30:05Speaker 1: a certain player or something, but you're not going to
- 30:07Speaker 1: the Savannah banana game. And then after the game being
- 30:09Speaker 1: like devastated, the team lost and all right. I mean,
- 30:13Speaker 1: maybe they're trying to make it more.
- 30:15Speaker 3: That's all. I'm not trying to cause the controversy you got,
- 30:18Speaker 3: but maybe.
- 30:19Speaker 2: In between innings, they need, like they do in the
- 30:21Speaker 2: minor leagues, like you brought up.
- 30:23Speaker 3: Remember, rest his soul, Myron Noodleman.
- 30:25Speaker 2: You know, he was funny with his eyes, like, ah-ah, harassing,
- 30:30Speaker 2: you know, like stupid stuff like that that I.
- 30:32Speaker 3: Remember my mom still talks about to this day. Do
- 30:35Speaker 3: you remember?
- 30:35Speaker 2: She'd laugh her butt off on things, you know. She
- 30:38Speaker 2: might be the little percentage that loves it, but that
- 30:41Speaker 2: might bring a couple people. But just in between stuff,
- 30:43Speaker 2: I mean, can't hurt.
- 30:45Speaker 3: I love this.
- 30:46Speaker 1: And I think there should be more of this for
- 30:47Speaker 1: teams that are not good down the stretch. Try to
- 30:50Speaker 1: incentivize your fans to come back and show them you're
- 30:54Speaker 1: thinking about them during a time when the team is
- 30:56Speaker 1: not good. I think that it probably doesn't get approved.
- 31:00Speaker 1: There are probably marketing teams on every level that come
- 31:04Speaker 1: up with this or at every team that isn't good
- 31:06Speaker 1: and it gets blocked. But the fact that they approve
- 31:08Speaker 1: this is cool. But I think especially when you're tying
- 31:11Speaker 1: it to wins too. So now they're coming back. They
- 31:13Speaker 1: know they're going to get a little money back regardless.
- 31:15Speaker 1: On top of that, you're rooting for the team. You
- 31:16Speaker 1: get a little more money back. So I just think
- 31:18Speaker 1: that concept is cool. Think about it. For them, I'm
- 31:21Speaker 1: not doing all the math for them. They're going to
- 31:23Speaker 1: make the money back in concessions. They know the average
- 31:26Speaker 1: fan spends $ 52 on concessions, and we made it back, right?
- 31:30Speaker 1: And you can't do it all year, but you should
- 31:32Speaker 1: do it. When your team stinks and they're not in contention,
- 31:35Speaker 1: give me a way to incentivize me to come back.
- 31:38Speaker 1: So you don't have to do all of the pomp
- 31:39Speaker 1: and circumstance in the minor leagues, but this is good.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I'm a fan of this. I think more teams should
- 31:44Speaker 1: pick up on this. Let's slap two things to cover.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Number one, this story carried itself through the week. It
- 32:03Speaker 1: was when Muncie was on with us and he talked
- 32:05Speaker 1: about the Tigers team playing. We did get some investigative
- 32:08Speaker 1: reporters on the scene. And by investigative reporters, I mean
- 32:12Speaker 1: people that reply to us on social media. Cam on
- 32:14Speaker 1: social said the Tigers upgraded their plane in 2025. It's
- 32:18Speaker 1: the only one actually owned by the team. That's interesting.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Maybe that has to do.
- 32:24Speaker 3: With it a little bit.
- 32:25Speaker 1: You choose to have your own plane. Planes are not cheap.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Although you're a billionaire, you own a team, your plane
- 32:31Speaker 1: couldn't get across the country. Now it can. They're good.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Little engine that could. That Tigers plane is now a
- 32:38Speaker 1: little bit beefier.
- 32:40Speaker 4: Get coast to coast now. I thought that's what Max said.
- 32:42Speaker 4: I thought he said they used to have a plane,
- 32:45Speaker 4: but I'm not always a great listener.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Yeah, same here.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Tough, tough for me to listen.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Sometimes.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Let's finish on a high note here.
- 32:55Speaker 3: This is a good one.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Kratz, this is an Eric Kratz special right here. The
- 33:00Speaker 1: other end of this obviously stinks for the player. Jesus Sanchez, DFA'd.
- 33:04Speaker 1: It brought him on for some pop. That hasn't been great.
- 33:06Speaker 1: The club has really struggled. But on the other side
- 33:08Speaker 1: of the story here, Rudy Martin Jr. is getting called
- 33:12Speaker 1: up by the Blue Jays. 12 years in the minor leagues.
- 33:16Speaker 1: He's 30. He was taken in the 25th round of
- 33:18Speaker 1: the draft. Jeff Passon with the tweet saying, of course,
- 33:20Speaker 1: that the 25th round doesn't exist anymore. And he played
- 33:25Speaker 1: indie ball, Mexican League. Welcome, Rudy Martin, to the show.
- 33:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:31Speaker 4: I mean, there's no... There's no way of explaining to
- 33:35Speaker 4: somebody taking that long.
- 33:38Speaker 3: Rudy play.
- 33:40Speaker 4: He was actually out of high school, 25th rounder out
- 33:43Speaker 4: of high school. So that's even more like he went
- 33:47Speaker 4: more grinder than I went grinder. 25th round out of
- 33:50Speaker 4: high school. You ain't getting much cash to go indie ball,
- 33:53Speaker 4: Mexican league, all that stuff. Like hats off to you. I,
- 33:59Speaker 4: I hope he gets a dinger, but you know, for sure.
- 34:02Speaker 4: It's Rudy, Rudy, Rudy, Rudy, Rudy.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Sorry. That's what I got. Yeah. Congrats to Rudy.
- 34:15Speaker 4: I'll be, I'll tune into the game just to see
- 34:17Speaker 4: if he gets in. Like that's, that's the real deal.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Hey, we know what Todd father's wearing and we'll finish
- 34:26Speaker 1: the way we started thinking about, lives lost, and just
- 34:29Speaker 1: the country in general and the healing process. 25 years ago, 9-11,
- 34:33Speaker 1: there's another one for Kratz, Kratz hats. Wow, you guys
- 34:36Speaker 1: really did it well. FDNY and NYPD hats for you guys.
- 34:41Speaker 4: Nice.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Represent, baby. Only the best.
- 34:46Speaker 4: Yours was from the Mets. Mine was from the Yanks.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
